Survival of the Fittest
Survival of the fittest. This idea, also known as Darwinism, was theorized by scientist Charles
Darwin to explain the evolution of animal species. In the late 1800s, however, the idea of Social
Darwinism emerged and applied the same concepts of Darwinism but on humans not animals. As
defined by the dictionary, Social Darwinism is a belief, popular in the late Victorian era
throughout the world, which states that the strongest or toughest should survive and flourish in
society, while the weak and unfit should be allowed to die ( Social 1). Science fiction writer H.G.
Wells lived when the ideas of Social Darwinism were at their peak. He was able to see firsthand
what effects Social Darwinism had on the world, and he was by no means... Show more content on

The narrator states, The Time Traveller hated to have servants waiting at dinner (13). The Time
Traveller has servants, as if he were an Eloi. Wells too is an Eloi. Even though he was in the
upper class, Wells was an outspoken socialist during his life. He saw problems in the capitalistic,
Darwinistic society in which he lived, and through depicting the end of the world as being
empty of human life, Wells is demonstrating the ultimate failings of a Capitalistic society
(Parrington 9). In Wells mind, Capitalism eventually causes the demise of humankind because of
the inevitable division of society it creates. In the end, there will be a major rift between the two
classes: the pleasure seeking, leisure loving upper class and the overworked, underprivileged
working class. Wells grew up surrounded by those he most despised and has an ambivalent
attitude towards the leisure and proletariat classes (Hennelly 1). Before he became famous for his
science fiction novels, Wells had trouble gaining acceptance from the upper class society because
he lacked the credentials and success to enter (Costa 12). Knowing this explains why Wells
welcomed a socialistic society void of rigid class structure. After examination of Wells life, it is
now easy to see why he has such apathy towards Social Darwinism. Furthermore, examination of

The Effects Of Different Types Of Carbon Taxes On The...
Introduction
This paper examines the effects of different types of carbon taxes on the market share of different
electricity generation technologies, particularly between renewable and fossil fuel generators. The
Global Change Assessment Model (GCAM) was used for this analysis because it includes detailed
representations of the technologies in the electricity sector. Given a constraint on emissions or a
certain carbon tax, GCAM will determine the least cost methods of supplying energy in different
sectors. We found that the share of low carbon generation will increase as the carbon tax increases
and the share of renewables generally increases with the implementation of a carbon tax.
Additionally, the timing of renewable market share ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
GCAM is a dynamic recursive model that utilizes a solution algorithm that is based on a market
equilibrium. It consists of three core modules: a) Energy, b) Agriculture and land use, and c) Model
for Assessment of Greenhouse gas Induced Climate Change (MAGICC). Regional population and
labor productivity growth assumptions drive the energy and land use systems employing numerous
technology options (JGCRI, n.d.). The GDP is a simple labor productivity model with an energy
GDP feedback elasticity (JGCRI, 2014). Technology change is modeled using an autonomous
energy efficiency index (AEEI) parameter.
The choice of generation mix of technologies in GCAM is based on a logit model, which includes
the relative cost, logit exponents, and share weights of each technology. The logit approach controls
the distribution of market share between technologies or fuels in response to price changes as
represented by equation (1).
(1) Share(i) =swi .Ci iswi .Ci where Ciis the cost of the ith technology, swiis the share weight of ith
technology and is the logit exponent. A high valued logit exponent means that technology s market
shares are more responsive to changes in costs. The share weights are calibrated parameters based
on the base

How Does John Proctor Show Greed In The Crucible
Greed: the intense and selfish desire for something, greed is something that can control someone
s actions or personality. In the story The Crucibles Rev Parris let his greed take over his mind
and other choices during this period of time. Rev Parris was a merchant before he became a
minister and it was obvious that he still had a love for money. Instead of worrying and caring for
his daughter who was sick he was arguing with his members about his ministers salary . John
Proctor didn t have much respect for Rev Parris because when Parris came to Salem he wanted
golden candlesticks instead of the perfectly good ones they had. For twenty weeks he preached
nothing but golden candlesticks until he got them. Another example of Rev Parris s greed was
when Abigail and Mary Warren stole Parris s money from his strongbox, he seemed more worried
about losing all of his money then his Abigail his niece. When a man can forget his daughters
sickness to argue his salary or use the podium to preach for golden candlesticks there is an evident
problem with greed for money in that person.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Modern Era And Its Impact On Society
A large percentage of ancient societies were developed around the concept of patriarchy.
Maintaining these societies was a man s work, females were solely there for childbearing purposes.
Certain Northern African societies defied societal norms of the time without consciously
understanding that they were doing so. Civilizations such as the Tuareg, Berbers and Egyptians all
formed gender equal societies. The men and women of these societies lived separate lives, each
with their own distinct duties. Despite these differences they were understood to be equal at a
fundamentally basic level that other groups of the time did not comprehend. Women in select
ancient North African societies were valued by their cultures and given significant duties in their
civilization which saw them as equal members.
Matriarchy can be defined as A society in which women not only have equality with men, but also
control, power and dominance or additionally the exact opposite of patriarchy. It has been
significantly debated by researchers whether or not matriarchal societies ever existed. This doubt is
primarily based upon the lack of matriarchal societies in modern era and a significant lack of
primary sources from the generations where these societies could have existed. Northern African
societies such as Egyptians, Berbers and Tuaregs had a system of equality in their cultures, whether
matriarchal, patriarchal or neither. These societies were not based upon women nor men ruling them,

I would diagnose Mr Beaver with Schizophrenia and Illness Anxiety Disorder. At first I thought
that Mr Beaver had Somatic Symptom Disorder due to his constant worrying of brain numbness,
but as I looked deeper into his case I believe his symptoms match Illness Anxiety Disorder. I went
back and forth on which disorder he has or if he only had Schizophrenia. As I looked further into Mr
Beavers case I believe he has Schizophrenia and Illness Anxiety Disorder. The symptoms that are
present that support Schizophrenia include delusions, hallucinations, and negative symptoms. Mr
Beaver showed two types of delusions. The first type was Persecution. As he was leaving the
doctors he had told other patients that the doctors are out to get them, by saying not to trust the
doctors. He also said that the doctors must all be working together and that they were told not to
tell him what is wrong with him. Both of these symptoms are part of the Persecution Delusion.
Due to this feeling he began to isolate himself in his room due to the fact that it was a safe place
for him. The second delusion is Reference Delusion. It was mentioned that Justin Beaver felt that
the TV was talking to him specifically. Mr Beaver also showed two symptoms for hallucinations.
The first one was Auditory Hallucination. While listening to the radio, Justin Beaver would softly
hear his name being called. As he would go and check out where his name was being called from
he would experience a Olfactory Hallucination.

Punishment Is A Necessary Evil And Punishment
Those who won our independence by revolution were not cowards [Supreme Court Associates
Justice; Louis Brandeis]
This essay will aim to support the idea that throughout history, prisons and other institutions did not
only punish the guilty, but control those otherwise socially excluded from society by reasons of
poverty, gender or social class. (Some of the most fundamental divisions in society.)
Punishment is a necessary evil and punishment is evoked when someone is believed to have done
wrong. It symbolizes and erects moral judgment and sustains solidarity and collective
consciousness. [Cesaroni 2010]
Prison is just one of a number of sanctions available to the courts to deal with those who commit
criminal offenses. History shows that prisons (and the system ) have not always been as fair and
just as it now is in the 21st century. (Arguable) Offenders who are convicted and then sentenced
to spend time imprisoned are often those who are socially excluded from society, the poor,
deprived, those with alcohol or drug dependencies or those with mental health issues.
Imprisonment today, is one of the harshest sanctions available, yet, the prison systems incorporate
psychology, psychiatrics and sociology (in the United Kingdom) but this has not always been the
case. [Georg Rusche 2003] The death penalty was once widely accepted. Prisons were created as
a means of control. In the 16th and 17th century according to Flynn [1998] prison was a place for
people awaiting trial,

Advantages Of Call Coverage In Healthcare
Call coverage: In this alignment, hospitals contracts with physicians and specialists for
providing on call coverage to patients in the emergency room, compensation is made to
specialists or physicians for their services. The hospitals made these agreements with specialists
and physicians because of shortage of healthcare workforce in the United States and also increase
in flow of patients to emergency room. In these model payments are made in the form of
stipends, fee for service payments or other kinds of hybrid payments. [10] Clinical co management

Bad Knees Weaknesses
Bad Knees
1.What are bad knees?
Apart from aching backs, a significant number of people who exercise and workout, complain about
aching knees. Exercise, sports and other activities, can cause serious injuries, muscle strains, and
tendonitis. For some people, knee pain can become so severe that daily activities become limited.
Others might experience mild pain, which might be a hindrance to their healthy lifestyle.
If you are dealing with a knee problem, chances are very high that you are suffering from bad
knees. Bad knees involve sudden knee pain. Injuring the knees or overusing them is one of the
main reasons that lead to bad knees. Older people tend to experience knee pain more than the

The method applied will normally depend on the reason behind the pain, as well as the extent of
the problem. If the problem is not severe, then there are simple home remedies applied and the
problem will be over within a few days. The most common home remedy is RICE. It stands for rest,
ice, compression, and elevation. These activities promote better knee movement while reducing the
swelling.
Medications are normally prescribed for pain relief or treat an underlying knee condition. Physical
therapy is another popular method. It is frequently used to fix bad knees. Sometimes, all you need
is to strengthen the muscles around the knees making it to withstand high activity levels. This helps
in avoiding further injuries, or even worsening the present injury.
Certain medical injections directly to the knee are prescribed, to alleviate the pain during certain
knee injuries. The most common injections used are lubricants and corticosteroids. Corticosteroids
are used to relieve inflammation and treat certain forms of arthritis. However, this needs to be done
frequently, to keep the condition in check. Doctors will usually prescribe lubricants, to add extra
fluid in your knee joints. Lubricants are familiar to knee fluid. They promote better movement and

In their recent work, Brad Manning and Sarah Vowell have written about more than one way to
have a close, but different relationship with their fathers. There is has always been a belief that
to get along with someone you would have normal conversations, enjoy each other s company, or
share a common interest. In the story they love their father as any other child would, but their
ways of communication are not the same and are different from a common father child
relationship. Both authors use rhetorical devices as a framework for differentiating their
relationships with their fathers by characterizing them. In both stories Arm Wrestling with My
Father, and Shooting Dad, the authors use different rhetorical strategies that allow them to
exemplify their actual feelings of how they relate to their father s. They also employ similar
rhetorical devices yet are used differently. Ours had always been a physical relationship, I
suppose, one determined by athleticism and strength. Manning emphasizes how his relationship
with his father is very physical and nonverbal. Manning describes the differences in perception
of his father s arms, symbolizing the change in their relationship that was about to take place.

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Essay
Although Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz had no formal training as a mathematician, his contributions
to the field of mathematics are still evident today. His results and work laid the groundwork for
more thorough and rigorous treatments of calculus that would come later from various
mathematicians. One of his most enduring legacies is the notations he used for calculus, which are
still used around the world. Outside of mathematics Gottfried Leibnizmade contributions to the
fields of philosophy, law, and politics.

these simple ideas by a uniform and symmetrical combination, analogous to arithmetical
multiplication. (Rational, 2010)

Corruption And Anti Corruption
In recent years, the use of Suspension and Debarment as an anti corruption and anti collusion
tool has gained traction in major procurement bodies around the world. The objective of such
actions is to sanitize the procurement process by getting rid of bad players and also to set an
example of such bad players. Another goal, as an extension, is to instigate corporate reforms and
good corporate governance among suppliers and contractors and generally among players in the
procurement process. An important goal of any procurement process is to increase competition
which is correlated to value for money. By increasing competition, goods and services are likely
to be obtained at the best price. A plurality of independent parties participating in the process thus
makes it possible to arrive at an economically prudent cost since purely market forces determine
price (More efficiency). Corruption and Collusion as a social canker and illegality reduces
competition and thereby value for money. Hence, all major procurement players frown on any
appearance of corruption and collusion in the procurement process. The need to see more ethical
and lawful behavior by players in the procurement process cannot be overemphasized. Economic
output has been shown to be affected by corrupt practices associated with procurement. In public
procurement, the cost of corruption is ultimately passed on to the taxpayer. In the private sector,
such actions may lead to increased costs which may ultimately be

What Is The Reflection Of A Oliver Library
A library is said to be the heart and soul of a college, also a refuge and a place of discovery, says
author Alan Gibbons. The quality of education given in college can be roughly judged from the
type of books in its library and its use by students(Gibbons). Since the renovation of the J.C.
Oliver Library, I hadn t been there. So, I decided to complete my filed observation there. I think
the library is a more appropriate for this exercise since taking notes would be unusual. For the
first five minutes, I looked around the whole environment in general to get a feel. I spot an
empty table between the entry and the reference desk. From here I could observe who is coming

What Is Sharing Circle And Focus Group Discussions Essay
Sharing circle and focus group discussions are similar in that they are commonly used in
qualitative research to explore and construct knowledge about a phenomenon with research
participants in small groups (Redman MacLaren, Mills, and Tommbe 2014). Also, both methods
can be used to explore experiences surrounding a particular topic within a group of various cultures
(Tobias and Richmond 2016). The choice between focus groupand sharing circles largely depends
on the epistemological position of the researcher, the context, and the study population (Redman
MacLaren, Mills, and Tommbe 2014).
Although the underlying purpose of both focus group and sharing circle discussions are very
similar, the procedures/protocols and cultural principles vary. Focus groups are often regarded as
top down design approach since participants carefully sampled and numbers restricted to a
recommended number however, sharing circles are more bottom up design approach with the
group size based on local, social, cultural, and physical conditions (Redman MacLaren, Mills, and
Tommbe 2014). Also, sharing circles have a sacred meaning in many Indigenous cultures and
involves the growth and transformation bases for the participants the act of sharing the heart, mind,
body, and spirit of the individual and providing the facilitator with the permission to report on the
discussions (LavallГ©e 2009). The methods will be discussed in respect to ceremony, relationship
building, and respect which are key factors

The Sculpture Of The Etruscan- Roman Tradition
In the early official and private portrait of the Etruscan Roman tradition, the achievement of
sculpture from the identity of the ideal Republican demonstrated motivation behind the virtus,
veristic, and gravitas qualities. The Etruscan Roman portrait sculpture of the Patrician Carrying
Portrait Busts of Two Ancestors is a life size marble statue that was dated to the period of the
Emperor Augustus somewhere at the end of the 1st century BCE or the beginning of the 1st century
CE, reflecting the practices that have originated from the past by Polybius.
This Etruscan Roman piece of art is detailed all around, but also ideal as depictions look influential
throughout the generations from the living patrician man holding the lifeless portrait busts of the
two very distinct ancestors. The surface of the marble used to carve the male figure, and the portrait
heads is very smooth and pale in colour, as the natural agent simulates realistic complexion through
the veins present within the marble creating a three dimensional illusion of meticulous naturalistic
rendition of the human anatomy engraved with relief detail all around. The function of the portrait
sculpture was to have a permanent documentation motivated by the realistic commemoration of one
s ancestors in a religious and ritualistic funeral use of death masks, that would have been cast from
the face of the deceased. This became an obvious style of presenting recognizable prestige that
conveyed the significance of

A Yellow Raft in Blue Water by Michael Dorris
While growing up Michael Dorris never encountered a Native American literary character that
he could relate too, and being of Modoc Tribe of California descent, this was something that was
very important to him. After graduating from Georgetown University, and earning a Master s
Degree at Yale, Dorris began to create these characters and ideas that he had longed for himself
during childhood. He married his literary partner, Louise Erdrich, who was also of Native
American descent. They had three children together, plus the three that Dorris had adopted, all of
which were born on Native American reservations. All three of his adopted children suffered from
fetal alcohol syndrome. During a twenty year period before Dorris death, he published fourteen
books and over one hundred articles. In 1987 he published his first novelA Yellow Raft in Blue
Water. A Yellow Raft in Blue Water is divided into three sections narrated by three different
Native American women: Rayona, Christine and Ida. All three of these women are all related.
Rayona is the daughter of Christine, and Christine believes she is the daughter of Ida, but Ida is
actually her half sister and cousin. All three sections were a part of a larger story; they all helped
support or complete each other. The structure of this novel forces us as readers to be more active.

It is no secret that the Caribbean fails to get the credit it rightfully deserves. One is taught to

Identity Negotiation Theory Paper
Identity negotiation theory is a theory that suggests that people are constantly negotiating who they
are to other people that they talk to, if even only subconsciously. Identity negotiation refers to the
process through which perceivers and targets come to agreements regarding their identities Swann
(2014). This essay analyzes self identitytheory, based on the facts that the theory suggests,
particularly how people negotiate their feelings, respect for each other, and in many ways even
their interests and disinterests, then I will critique the theory in question. First, this essay will
discuss how people negotiate their feelings on a daily basis based off the theory in question. When
one says hello or a similar greeting to someone else the speaker is asking (if even somewhat
subconsciously) how the other person is feeling. Usually the other person will communicate back
their feelings, which is answered in a pretty simplistic manner. If the person that answers the
greeting says that they are doing well, then that means that they are in a good mood and are
interested in driving the communication further; if that same person says that they are doing bad
then that means that they re not feeling well today, but are still interested in furthering the
conversation; and if a person doesn t answer the question at all, then that means that that person is

Infants would soon have an enlarged thymus following birth and physicians would give the

X ray was first discovered on November 8, 1895 by accident. Wilhelm Roentgen was conducting

How Do Church Buildings Have Changed Over Time
The church structures have changed drastically over time. In the beginning of the Church History,
places of worship were simple stone buildings, with the primary focus being on praising God and
having a place to hold the sacraments. Monasteries were a common worship center as well. The
simple designs have been revamped. By the time of the Renaissance, churches were created to be
magnificent places for prayer and to give thanks to God. Since then, churchstructures have only
progressed in design. These designs can vary dramatically depending on the location of the church.
However, all churches share some of the same building and design techniques. Stain glass
windows, for example, are some of the most beautiful features found in many churches today.

Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde Reason Vs Supernatural
The psychological thriller novella Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde written by Robert Louis Stevenson, has
a variety of themes, motifs, and symbols, the most important and most prominent being reason vs.
the supernatural. This theme can be interpreted as logic against religion, making the idea even more
applicable. Reason against the supernatural is the salient theme of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, it is a
theme depicted throughout the novella. The personages in the novella, as well as the general public
of the Victorian era, were extremely illogical in their reasonings. Scientific theories had not been
established at the time, leading many to remain unreasonable on the topic of the supernatural. With
the most pertinent idea of the book being reason vs. the supernatural, it is mentioned in every
chapter of the novella, proving the importance of this theme.
A common issue among Victorians was science vs. religion, with many believing they should pick

Challenging Lutgendorf s Ideas within his Article through...
Intro: The discourse of film is a questionable field of study in its own respect. To say whether a
film is influence or not by another medium is a problematic area as there are many factors to
account for which can influence an artist s project. In Philip Lutgendorf s article, Is There An
Indian Way of Filmmaking? (2006), he attempts to suggest how texts from the Indian cultural
heritage could be used for the discourse of both Indian cinema as well as to the study of cinema
itself, which justifies discussion. This essay will attempt to challenge Lutgendorf s ideas within his
article through Hayao Miyazakis film, Spirited Away(2001) through the discussion of manga

Manga literally translates to informal drawings or impromptu sketches , and are the Japanese
equivalent to comic books. New Treasure Island featured many western influences such as the
use of big eyes, which is noticeable in Walt Disney s work. Ultimately, Tezuka laid the
foundations for modern manga. Because of manga s large popularity, it went onto the filmic
medium known as animae. Like manga and its early development, animae has had help in its
creative development. The large sum of aid in the growth of animae was western influences in
cartooning, such as Walt Disney, as well as literature from works from Lewis Carroll s Alice in
Wonderland (1865) and L. Frank Baum s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900). Spirited Away
contains influences of both Alice in Wonderland as well as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz since
both Chihiro, Dorothy, and Alice are lost in a fantastical world which they know nothing about, and
face a female power hungry antagonist who attempts to stop their desire to go back home.
Para. 1: Referring back to the origins of manga and animae, these art forms were created to repress
the American influence over Japan through the revival of traditional Japanese art practices such as
woodblock paintings, and jojЕЌ ga literally translated to sentimental , or lyrical painting , which

A Theory of Justice Presented by John Rawls Essays
In A Theory of Justice John Rawls presents his argument for justice and inequality. Rawls
theorizes that in the original position, a hypothetical state where people reason without bias,
they would agree to live in a society based on two principles of justice (Rawls 1971, 4). These
two principles of justice are named the first and second principles. The first is the equal rights
and liberties principle. The second is a combination of the difference principle and the fair
equality of opportunity principle, or FEOP (Rawls 1971, 53). Rawls argues that inequality will
always be inevitable in any society (Rawls 1971, 7). For example, there will always be a varied
distribution of social and economic advantages. Some people will be wealthier than... Show more

Furthermore, they have no concept of social standing or economic standing. The individuals are
just capable of reasoning and possess the goal of creating a just society (Rawls 1971, 17). The
purpose of the veil is to allow those in the original position to agree on rules pertaining to their own
mutual interests. Rawls thinks that behind the veil of ignorance, free of bias with rational
thought, the individuals would agree to a society governed by his two principles of justice
(Rawls 1971, 53). Individuals would agree to these principles because it would be the only way
to ensure a fair initial status quo in society (Rawls 1971, 53). This is important because it allows
for justified inequalities later that will be regulated instead of unjust inequalities. No one would
want to make things unequal from the start because they have no way of knowing their actual
place in society behind the veil (Rawls 1971, 11). For example, if someone suggested that all
UCR students get free tuition at the cost of students at other universities footing the bill, it
would be within the individuals best interest to disagree because he has no way of knowing if he
is a UCR student in the society or one of the other university students that now have to pay more.
The idea of the original position is that a just society would be fair and equal, and individuals
behind the veil of ignorance would agree on Rawls two principles of justice to make it so. Rawls s

The Implications Of Oil Trade
Even the important contribution of Chapter 2, the proposed analysis requires a deeper study to
understand the implications related to oil trade and how the expected oil production will be
consumed by the demand. Considering only Canada for all the expected oil production from the
Western provinces doesn t seem enough. To achieve the forecasted production levels, producers of
Western Canadian oil must find a market that values their oil at reasonable price. Without access to
seaports, Alberta and Saskatchewan need to develop their transportation capacity to export this
expected production. The challenge related to the increasing availability of Western Canadian oil
and its distribution to domestic and international markets is imminent. Indeed, uncertainty in oil
reserves and production implies uncertainty on future trade movements, and consequently, on oil
corridors. It is now becoming a political, economic and national security matter that this oil finds
access to other markets and export opportunities (McKenna, 2013). As for their actual markets,
maintenance on existing pipelines and the necessity of upgrading refineries to process this crude oil
from Western Canada create bottlenecks upstream that increase the constraints to allow the
expected growth. All these challenges have economic implications that translate in a price
differential. The oil production surplus and the inability to reach external markets already have

Although in many cases that rationale holds true, there are considerable benefits to CEO duality.
Researchers have suggested that chairman/chief executive duality is a double edged sword .
While some stockholders are put off by the absence of board control and checks and balances,
others are reassured by the presence of unity of command and the absence of potentially
acrimonious conflict between strong minded individuals. Finkelsein and D Aveni found that a
major factor in divining the success of this duality was the level of CEO informal power.
Either perceptual or objective data can be used to measure informal CEO power. Although some
researchers have used perceptual measures of power, power is a sensitive subject for many
managers. In using perceptual measures, a researcher assumes that social actors are knowledgeable
about power within their organizations; informants are willing to divulge what they know about
power distributions; and such a questioning process
IIAdvantages of CEO Duality
When it comes to insiders versus outsiders on the board, a predominant role for insiders finds
support more often, probably because insiders are more familiar with the issues, the technology,
and the practice of the firm . Only they who are deeply involved and can make it work add value.
It is simply not viable for twice removed outsiders, no matter how expert, to provide anything other

clergy identified with one primary black denomination (90%); urban clergy members were
overwhelmingly male (98%); 88% of urban clergy members were married, 3.6% were divorced, 5%

supplied by the church), identifies with only one denominational group, earns more than rural
clergy, does not get a car allowance, has no health insurance via the church, is not a college

are present within the Black Urban Church that may not take place in the Black Rural Church
setting? Bible Study Groups, Prayer Meetings, are the ministries that were present in the urban

Analysis Of David Ogilvy s The Consumer Isn t A Moron
Professional Advertiser David Ogilvy
The consumer isn t a moron. She is your wife. A strongly worded quote from David
Ogilvy highlights the importance of the relationship and connection necessary between and
advertiser and his or her consumer. Ogilvy, like many others, started from the bottom and worked
tirelessly to the top. Born in Oxford,
England on June 23, 1911, David would live the next twenty seven years in and around his
hometown. David studied at two different colleges and ended up graduating from neither Fettes
College nor Christ Church. Going nowhere fast, David began a career working in a kitchen.
Not long into his career there did he realize the job description did not match his big ideas for
what his life was supposed to be like. David spoke the following words about his kitchen work: If
I stayed at the Majestic I would have faced years of slave wages, fiendish pressure, and perpetual
exhaustion. Quitting this career opened the door for his big change in the advertising world. ( David
Ogilvy Biography | Ogilvy Mather )
Ogilvy began selling stoves to everyone. Nothing out of the ordinary or overpriced expensive
appliances, but a simple generic cooking stove became David s first encounter with consumers
face to face. David took this door to door work very seriously and became one with his clientele.
He never limited himself when the sale came down to a consumer. Whether the consumer was a
religious service member or a single mother, David spread his

Racial Inequality And Police Brutality
Racial inequality is a disparity in opportunity and treatment that occurs as a result of someone s
race (Racial Inequality, 1996 2017, line 1). Racial profiling and police brutality falls under racial
inequality. According to Nazgol Ghandnoosh (2017), Officers racially biased use of discretion
either intentional or unintentional is one cause of racial disparities in policecontact that are not
explained by differences in crime rates (p. 6). When one group is targeted more than another it will
cause the group that is targeted the most to have more involvement. The crime rates for black people
is higher than those of white people because more black people are arrested than white people.

Lessons From The Light By Phaedo
Thinking about our mental lives extended beyond our biological death is a common topic in society
and culture. Research has shown that the mind and normal consciousness are common with the
functioning of the brain. Yet, many people believe in some form of life after death, which many
religions have faith in. In Platos Phaedo dialogue, Socrates explains that a true philosopher should
look forward to death. Death is the final separation of the souland body; most believe that the soul is
immortal, so it will survive death. Socrates argues three statements that the soul is indeed immortal,
the first statement is known as Argument from opposite. In this argument everything is opposite
such as life and death are opposites, humans live and eventually... Show more content on

Then Plato explains that life comes in many forms, such as Form of beauty, Form of Justice, and
other Forms. The soul is perfect and never ending, not only for this life but forever. The summary
of Kenneth Ring s book Lessons from the Light gave reasons that death is a beautiful thing. After
a nearby death moment whether good or bad, you change in a way to better yourself as a person
and/or for god. In this summary it lists ten lessons after having that experience, such as do not fear
about death, life is precious, and many more.
At this moment in my life for being just 20, I am scared and unsure if I think our mental lives
extend beyond our biological deaths. I will never know what happens after I die, until I am
actually dying. All of what happens after death is based specifically on faith and beliefs. Life
after death can either be in Hell or in Heaven depending on what you believe in. What determine
our afterlife are our intentions and actions in this life on earth now. At this moment in my life I
do not have strong religious beliefs, but my family is religious and pray for a good after life. In my
opinion and way of life, I cannot determine where my soul is going to travel or if it is going to be
with God. I will only know once I am in that spot, that once I die, I exactly know where my soul is

Essay on Air Pollutants
A fleet of vehicles will have far reaching impacts; perhaps best known by the general public is the
impact on air quality.
Air pollutants may be released in a number of ways: first through evaporation during fueling, second
through tailpipe emissions while a car is running, and third through chemical reactions occurring
with byproducts or unused components emitted into the atmosphere.(Motor vehicles and toxic air
pollutants. 2008) Typical chemicals released include benzene, toluene, xylenes, diesel particulate
matter, and volatile organic compounds.(Motor vehicles and toxic air pollutants. 2008) In addition,
formaldehyde and acetaldehyde may be produced in reactions with the air. (Motor vehicles and

According to a 2005 study, air pollution may be estimated to be responsible for 3% of adult
cardiopulmonary disease mortality; 5% of trachea and bronchus mortality; and in children 1% of
mortality from acute respiratory infections in urban areas throughout the world.(Cohen et al., 2005)
Air pollutants from a fleet of vehicles may also cause environmental impacts such as the creation
of ground level ozone, a key component of smog, and the emission of greenhouse gases suspected
of causing drastic changes in the earth s climate. (Transportation and air quality planning: Federal
laws provide tools for change. 2008)
To combat these threats, federal and state level policies have been put in place to help monitor and
reduce air pollution. Perhaps the most far reaching of these was the 1990 Clean Air Act which
required the reformulating of gasoline and set emission standards from hydrocarbons and diesel
particulate matter. Subsequent amendments to this act required the removal of lead from gasoline
and limitations to the amount of sulfur in diesel fuel. (Air toxics from motor vehicles. August
1994) Government regulations on vehicles added requirements for emission reduction equipment
such as catalytic converters.(Motor vehicles and toxic air pollutants.2008) Specific federal

Such portrayal of bear like activities would be the crusing and smashing of Curley s hand.Curley
s small masculine hands are no match for Lennie s solid, strong, bear like paws thus giving us
the result of Curleys puvled hand. Lennie is an extremely sensitive boy who watches over his
best friend and lover, to add he has an etremely terrible temper. He gets uncannily hyped up just
thinking about having a pet rabbit or puppy, not to mention being aloud to have a one. Yet
Lennie is incredibly strong and cannot comprehend this. He doesnt perceive to be scary or
frightening to anyone except for Curley. Curley despises Lennie, in light of the fact that he
couldn t care less for tremendous huge men and really makes a joke of him because of his
mental capacity and simple needs. Such bear like expressions are: Dragging his feet a little as a
bear would drag his paws . Yet this isn t the only creature Lennie is implied to be, other cases
include, being solid as a bull. This reliable constant use of symbolism shows us Lennie s affection
and commitment for creatures he could call his own for example: rabbits, mice, and puppies. This
makes us aware of how animal and to some degree child like Lennie really

  • 2. Survival of the Fittest Survival of the fittest. This idea, also known as Darwinism, was theorized by scientist Charles Darwin to explain the evolution of animal species. In the late 1800s, however, the idea of Social Darwinism emerged and applied the same concepts of Darwinism but on humans not animals. As defined by the dictionary, Social Darwinism is a belief, popular in the late Victorian era throughout the world, which states that the strongest or toughest should survive and flourish in society, while the weak and unfit should be allowed to die ( Social 1). Science fiction writer H.G. Wells lived when the ideas of Social Darwinism were at their peak. He was able to see firsthand what effects Social Darwinism had on the world, and he was by no means... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The narrator states, The Time Traveller hated to have servants waiting at dinner (13). The Time Traveller has servants, as if he were an Eloi. Wells too is an Eloi. Even though he was in the upper class, Wells was an outspoken socialist during his life. He saw problems in the capitalistic, Darwinistic society in which he lived, and through depicting the end of the world as being empty of human life, Wells is demonstrating the ultimate failings of a Capitalistic society (Parrington 9). In Wells mind, Capitalism eventually causes the demise of humankind because of the inevitable division of society it creates. In the end, there will be a major rift between the two classes: the pleasure seeking, leisure loving upper class and the overworked, underprivileged working class. Wells grew up surrounded by those he most despised and has an ambivalent attitude towards the leisure and proletariat classes (Hennelly 1). Before he became famous for his science fiction novels, Wells had trouble gaining acceptance from the upper class society because he lacked the credentials and success to enter (Costa 12). Knowing this explains why Wells welcomed a socialistic society void of rigid class structure. After examination of Wells life, it is now easy to see why he has such apathy towards Social Darwinism. Furthermore, examination of The Time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Effects Of Different Types Of Carbon Taxes On The... Introduction This paper examines the effects of different types of carbon taxes on the market share of different electricity generation technologies, particularly between renewable and fossil fuel generators. The Global Change Assessment Model (GCAM) was used for this analysis because it includes detailed representations of the technologies in the electricity sector. Given a constraint on emissions or a certain carbon tax, GCAM will determine the least cost methods of supplying energy in different sectors. We found that the share of low carbon generation will increase as the carbon tax increases and the share of renewables generally increases with the implementation of a carbon tax. Additionally, the timing of renewable market share ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... GCAM is a dynamic recursive model that utilizes a solution algorithm that is based on a market equilibrium. It consists of three core modules: a) Energy, b) Agriculture and land use, and c) Model for Assessment of Greenhouse gas Induced Climate Change (MAGICC). Regional population and labor productivity growth assumptions drive the energy and land use systems employing numerous technology options (JGCRI, n.d.). The GDP is a simple labor productivity model with an energy GDP feedback elasticity (JGCRI, 2014). Technology change is modeled using an autonomous energy efficiency index (AEEI) parameter. The choice of generation mix of technologies in GCAM is based on a logit model, which includes the relative cost, logit exponents, and share weights of each technology. The logit approach controls the distribution of market share between technologies or fuels in response to price changes as represented by equation (1). (1) Share(i) =swi .Ci iswi .Ci where Ciis the cost of the ith technology, swiis the share weight of ith technology and is the logit exponent. A high valued logit exponent means that technology s market shares are more responsive to changes in costs. The share weights are calibrated parameters based on the base ... In the story The Crucibles Rev Parris let his greed take over his mind and other choices during this period of time. Rev Parris was a merchant before he became a minister and it was obvious that he still had a love for money. Instead of worrying and caring for his daughter who was sick he was arguing with his members about his ministers salary . John Proctor didn t have much respect for Rev Parris because when Parris came to Salem he wanted golden candlesticks instead of the perfectly good ones they had. For twenty weeks he preached nothing but golden candlesticks until he got them. Another example of Rev Parris s greed was when Abigail and Mary Warren stole Parris s money from his strongbox, he seemed more worried about losing all of his money then his Abigail his niece. • 5. Modern Era And Its Impact On Society A large percentage of ancient societies were developed around the concept of patriarchy. Maintaining these societies was a man s work, females were solely there for childbearing purposes. Certain Northern African societies defied societal norms of the time without consciously understanding that they were doing so. Civilizations such as the Tuareg, Berbers and Egyptians all formed gender equal societies. The men and women of these societies lived separate lives, each with their own distinct duties. Despite these differences they were understood to be equal at a fundamentally basic level that other groups of the time did not comprehend. Women in select ancient North African societies were valued by their cultures and given significant duties in their civilization which saw them as equal members. Matriarchy can be defined as A society in which women not only have equality with men, but also control, power and dominance or additionally the exact opposite of patriarchy. It has been significantly debated by researchers whether or not matriarchal societies ever existed. This doubt is primarily based upon the lack of matriarchal societies in modern era and a significant lack of primary sources from the generations where these societies could have existed. Northern African societies such as Egyptians, Berbers and Tuaregs had a system of equality in their cultures, whether matriarchal, patriarchal or neither. At first I thought that Mr Beaver had Somatic Symptom Disorder due to his constant worrying of brain numbness, but as I looked deeper into his case I believe his symptoms match Illness Anxiety Disorder. I went back and forth on which disorder he has or if he only had Schizophrenia. As I looked further into Mr Beavers case I believe he has Schizophrenia and Illness Anxiety Disorder. The symptoms that are present that support Schizophrenia include delusions, hallucinations, and negative symptoms. Mr Beaver showed two types of delusions. The first type was Persecution. As he was leaving the doctors he had told other patients that the doctors are out to get them, by saying not to trust the doctors. He also said that the doctors must all be working together and that they were told not to tell him what is wrong with him. Both of these symptoms are part of the Persecution Delusion. Due to this feeling he began to isolate himself in his room due to the fact that it was a safe place for him. The second delusion is Reference Delusion. It was mentioned that Justin Beaver felt that the TV was talking to him specifically. Mr Beaver also showed two symptoms for hallucinations. The first one was Auditory Hallucination. Punishment Is A Necessary Evil And Punishment Those who won our independence by revolution were not cowards [Supreme Court Associates Justice; Louis Brandeis] This essay will aim to support the idea that throughout history, prisons and other institutions did not only punish the guilty, but control those otherwise socially excluded from society by reasons of poverty, gender or social class. (Some of the most fundamental divisions in society.) Punishment is a necessary evil and punishment is evoked when someone is believed to have done wrong. It symbolizes and erects moral judgment and sustains solidarity and collective consciousness. [Cesaroni 2010] Prison is just one of a number of sanctions available to the courts to deal with those who commit criminal offenses. History shows that prisons (and the system ) have not always been as fair and just as it now is in the 21st century. (Arguable) Offenders who are convicted and then sentenced to spend time imprisoned are often those who are socially excluded from society, the poor, deprived, those with alcohol or drug dependencies or those with mental health issues. Imprisonment today, is one of the harshest sanctions available, yet, the prison systems incorporate psychology, psychiatrics and sociology (in the United Kingdom) but this has not always been the case. In their recent work, Brad Manning and Sarah Vowell have written about more than one way to have a close, but different relationship with their fathers. There is has always been a belief that to get along with someone you would have normal conversations, enjoy each other s company, or share a common interest. In the story they love their father as any other child would, but their ways of communication are not the same and are different from a common father child relationship. Both authors use rhetorical devices as a framework for differentiating their relationships with their fathers by characterizing them. In both stories Arm Wrestling with My Father, and Shooting Dad, the authors use different rhetorical strategies that allow them to exemplify their actual feelings of how they relate to their father s. They also employ similar rhetorical devices yet are used differently. Ours had always been a physical relationship, I suppose, one determined by athleticism and strength. • 20. Corruption And Anti Corruption In recent years, the use of Suspension and Debarment as an anti corruption and anti collusion tool has gained traction in major procurement bodies around the world. The objective of such actions is to sanitize the procurement process by getting rid of bad players and also to set an example of such bad players. Another goal, as an extension, is to instigate corporate reforms and good corporate governance among suppliers and contractors and generally among players in the procurement process. An important goal of any procurement process is to increase competition which is correlated to value for money. By increasing competition, goods and services are likely to be obtained at the best price. A plurality of independent parties participating in the process thus makes it possible to arrive at an economically prudent cost since purely market forces determine price (More efficiency). Corruption and Collusion as a social canker and illegality reduces competition and thereby value for money. Hence, all major procurement players frown on any appearance of corruption and collusion in the procurement process. The need to see more ethical and lawful behavior by players in the procurement process cannot be overemphasized. Economic output has been shown to be affected by corrupt practices associated with procurement. In public procurement, the cost of corruption is ultimately passed on to the taxpayer. What Is Sharing Circle And Focus Group Discussions Essay Sharing circle and focus group discussions are similar in that they are commonly used in qualitative research to explore and construct knowledge about a phenomenon with research participants in small groups (Redman MacLaren, Mills, and Tommbe 2014). Also, both methods can be used to explore experiences surrounding a particular topic within a group of various cultures (Tobias and Richmond 2016). The choice between focus groupand sharing circles largely depends on the epistemological position of the researcher, the context, and the study population (Redman MacLaren, Mills, and Tommbe 2014). Although the underlying purpose of both focus group and sharing circle discussions are very similar, the procedures/protocols and cultural principles vary. Focus groups are often regarded as top down design approach since participants carefully sampled and numbers restricted to a recommended number however, sharing circles are more bottom up design approach with the group size based on local, social, cultural, and physical conditions (Redman MacLaren, Mills, and Tommbe 2014). • 36. A Theory of Justice Presented by John Rawls Essays In A Theory of Justice John Rawls presents his argument for justice and inequality. Rawls theorizes that in the original position, a hypothetical state where people reason without bias, they would agree to live in a society based on two principles of justice (Rawls 1971, 4). These two principles of justice are named the first and second principles. The first is the equal rights and liberties principle. The second is a combination of the difference principle and the fair equality of opportunity principle, or FEOP (Rawls 1971, 53). Rawls argues that inequality will always be inevitable in any society (Rawls 1971, 7). For example, there will always be a varied distribution of social and economic advantages. The individuals are just capable of reasoning and possess the goal of creating a just society (Rawls 1971, 17). The purpose of the veil is to allow those in the original position to agree on rules pertaining to their own mutual interests. Rawls thinks that behind the veil of ignorance, free of bias with rational thought, the individuals would agree to a society governed by his two principles of justice (Rawls 1971, 53). Individuals would agree to these principles because it would be the only way to ensure a fair initial status quo in society (Rawls 1971, 53). This is important because it allows for justified inequalities later that will be regulated instead of unjust inequalities. No one would want to make things unequal from the start because they have no way of knowing their actual place in society behind the veil (Rawls 1971, 11). For example, if someone suggested that all UCR students get free tuition at the cost of students at other universities footing the bill, it would be within the individuals best interest to disagree because he has no way of knowing if he is a UCR student in the society or one of the other university students that now have to pay more. The idea of the original position is that a just society would be fair and equal, and individuals behind the veil of ignorance would agree on Rawls two principles of justice to make it so. • 39. The Implications Of Oil Trade Even the important contribution of Chapter 2, the proposed analysis requires a deeper study to understand the implications related to oil trade and how the expected oil production will be consumed by the demand. Considering only Canada for all the expected oil production from the Western provinces doesn t seem enough. To achieve the forecasted production levels, producers of Western Canadian oil must find a market that values their oil at reasonable price. Without access to seaports, Alberta and Saskatchewan need to develop their transportation capacity to export this expected production. The challenge related to the increasing availability of Western Canadian oil and its distribution to domestic and international markets is imminent. Indeed, uncertainty in oil reserves and production implies uncertainty on future trade movements, and consequently, on oil corridors. It is now becoming a political, economic and national security matter that this oil finds access to other markets and export opportunities (McKenna, 2013). As for their actual markets, maintenance on existing pipelines and the necessity of upgrading refineries to process this crude oil from Western Canada create bottlenecks upstream that increase the constraints to allow the expected growth. All these challenges have economic implications that translate in a price differential. Although in many cases that rationale holds true, there are considerable benefits to CEO duality. Researchers have suggested that chairman/chief executive duality is a double edged sword . While some stockholders are put off by the absence of board control and checks and balances, others are reassured by the presence of unity of command and the absence of potentially acrimonious conflict between strong minded individuals. Finkelsein and D Aveni found that a major factor in divining the success of this duality was the level of CEO informal power. Either perceptual or objective data can be used to measure informal CEO power. Although some researchers have used perceptual measures of power, power is a sensitive subject for many managers. In using perceptual measures, a researcher assumes that social actors are knowledgeable about power within their organizations; informants are willing to divulge what they know about power distributions; and such a questioning process IIAdvantages of CEO Duality When it comes to insiders versus outsiders on the board, a predominant role for insiders finds support more often, probably because insiders are more familiar with the issues, the technology, and the practice of the firm .
