The document discusses six main characteristics of effective language use: 1) being concrete and specific rather than vague, 2) being concise rather than verbose, 3) using familiar rather than obscure language, 4) being precise and clear rather than inaccurate or ambiguous, 5) being constructive rather than destructive, and 6) using an appropriately formal format. It provides examples to illustrate these characteristics, such as using specific details to describe an unpleasant roommate rather than abstract language, and phrasing feedback constructively to avoid defensiveness. The document also discusses using familiar language that readers easily understand, being precise to avoid multiple interpretations, and matching the level of formality in one's language to the relationship and situation.

This ppt had the objectives such as criticize the texts using the different approaches of criticism; and apply the appropriate critical approaches in writing a critique. It presents the systematic process in presentation expecially in classroom setting wherein there are preliminaries, motivation, presenting the lesson, activities and valuing. It emphasize critique which means it uses a formal, academic writing style and has a clear structure, that is, an introduction, body, and conclusion.
“The Media Criticism approach focuses - It is the act of closely examining and judging the media. When we examine the media and various media stories, we often find instances of media bias. Media bias is the perception that the media is reporting the news in a partial or prejudiced manner. Media bias occurs when the media seems to push a specific viewpoint, rather than reporting the news objectively.
“It focuses on the economic and political elements of art, often emphasizing the ideological content of literature; because Marxist criticism often argues that all art is political, either challenging or endorsing (by silence) the status quo, it is frequently evaluative and judgmental, a tendency that “can lead to reductive judgment.”

Situation:
Tim Smith the IT manager comes to you and says "My project coordinators are in a slump; they just are not producing their usual caliber of work. I need to find out what the problem is. No one on the project team knows what is going on. The communcation my project coordinators are giving is coming across as rude, which in turn keeps moral low and the teams are not doing the work. I was hoping you would be able to put together an Effective Communication training for them to help get everyone back on the right track." There are 10 project coordinators in the IT department. Two of the project coordinator's are in the organization's Bangkok office. Tim wants the training to last no longer than 4 hours and wants it to be face to face in a class room with you, the trainer. He does not want to fly the Bangkok assoicates in and would like you to set up a Skype session with them during your training. He also wants you to set up weekly coaching sessions with each project manager and himself for a month after the training is completed.
Training Purchased from USA Training: Effective Communication
You are to use this information, but are not limited to it. Tim wants to make sure this information is covered in the training as he went online and bought it from USA Training, however he is open to what research you find. He wants the training to be interactive and requested that you included at least 1 activity around communication in the training.
Effective Communcation:
Introduction
People in organizations typically spend over 75% of their time in an interpersonal situation; thus it is no surprise to find that at the root of a large number of organizational problems is poor communications. Effective communication is an essential component of organizational success whether it is at the interpersonal, inter-group, intra-group, organizational, or external levels.
In this chapter we will cover the basic process of communication and then we will cover some of the most difficult communication issues managers’ face-providing constructive and effective feedback and performance appraisal.
The Communication Process
Although all of us have been communicating with others since our infancy, the process of transmitting information from an individual (or group) to another is a very complex proces.
No matter how good the communication system in an organization is, unfortunately barriers can and do occur.
Barriers mean all those difficulty/ obstacles/ problems/ hurdles or breakdowns which stop or interrupt the process of communication.
Barrier some times become so strong that they can even make the whole process of communication just a failure.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
2.
There are six main characteristics of effective
language.
1. Concrete and specific, not vague and abstract
2. Concise, not verbose
3. Familiar, not obscure
4. Precise and clear, not in accurate or ambiguous
5. Constructive, not destructive ; and
6. Appropriately format
Characteristics of effective language
3.
Abstract Specific
He is a bad roommate. He is lazy and discourteous.
He is untied and unclean.
He doesn’t clean up his own messes.
He leaves his dirty dishes in the
kitchen counter.
Your relationship with John is
unacceptable.
You do not go along well with John.
You and John have a lot of
arguments.
You and John insult each other too
much.
You and John call each other
derogatory names.
Concrete and specific language
4.
1. It is widely discussed by employees that many of
them will be forced to change jobs and take on new
responsibilities when the merger takes place
between the two companies.
2. Before making decision about the whether the
person on trial is guilty or innocent in this case, the
members of the jury should be sure to carefully
think about, ponder and reflect on all of the
important and relevant testimony in this case.
Concise Language
5.
Familiar language is that which the reader easily
recognizes and understands because they use it on
regular basis. One of the most important function of
language is to bulid “homophily” or a sense of
commonality with one’s readers
Familiar Language
6.
Precise and Clear Language
The use of appropriate language is a tricky matter because the
meaning of words is relative and situational. Therefore, words
can be interpreted in different ways by different people in
different situation. For this reason, it is important to choose
language which precise and clear one’s use of language
becomes, the fewer the number of possible reason
interpretations for a message.
(1) probable (2) doubtful (3) certainly (4) unlikely (5) perhaps
7.
Constructive Language phrases a potentially
negative message in a positive way, whereas
destructive language direct blame and
criticism toward the reader, creating
defensiveness.
Constructive Language
8.
1. Indifference or apathy about an issue of importance
to the reader.
2. Negative evaluation or judgment of the reader (as
opposed to neutral description or observation)
3. Command or control over the reader.
4. Skepticism or doubt about the reader’s credibility
or the legitimacy of the claims.
Superiority Over the Reader
9.
1. Boss to employee
2. Student to instructor
3. Instructor to student
Consider the following examples
10. The formality of the language one uses should match the
formality of the situation and the relationship between the writer
and the reader.
Very Formal : Exceedingly large segments of the population are
expressing their discontent with medical practitioners who appear
more engrossed in amazing financial assets than in providing
efficacious care to people with healthy disorders.
Formal : A large number of costumers are complaining about
medical doctors who are apparently more interested in making
money than in providing effective health care.
Informal : A lot of people are unhappy with their doctors who only
seem to care about how much money they make, and not about
giving their patient good care.
Formality of language
