       Pareidolia
Pareidolia (pronounced /pærɪˈdoʊliə/ pa-ri-DOE-lee-ə) is a psychological phenomenon involving a vague
and random stimulus (often an image or sound) being perceived as significant. Common examples include
seeing images of animals or faces in clouds, the man in the moon or the Moon rabbit, and hearing hidden
messages on records played in reverse. The word comes from the Greek παρά (para- – "beside", "with", or
"alongside"—meaning, in this context, something faulty or wrong (as in paraphasia, disordered speech)) and
εἴδωλον (eidōlon – "image"; the diminutive of εἴδος, eidos – "image", "form", "shape").

In this assignment, you must create a face by using pattern and line. The face must be
“hidden” within the overall pattern, but still visible to the viewer. Use your imagination,
and feel free to be creative.

Assignment:
       1. After viewing examples and creating a sheet of sample patterns with various line
weight, begin to sketch the outline of a face on paper with pencil.
       2. Using your sharpie pens, fill in negative space with pattern and line, making sure to fill
the picture completely. There is no wrong way to execute this step, but please be aware
       of the following:
o It is important to use thick line to help the viewer find clarity in the overall pattern.
o Your face will be much easier to spot if it is facing forwards.
o The most successful projects are usually or not immediately “found” but also
remember that unless the viewer can find the face, it will just be a jumble of
               pattern.
o If you make a “mistake” it is easily camouflaged into the surrounding pattern with
               a little skill.
           3. Design Fundamentals students should use little representational imagery
and tend towards works comprised of pure pattern. Drawing students should
feel free to use a mix of techniques.
Objectives:
Use and invention of pattern using varying qualities of line.
       Creativity and imagination.
Overall technical proficiency and a high level of craftsmanship.

Grading Rubric:

CONCEPT (40 pts) : The project makes use of line quality, gestalt, and negative/positive
space is utilized in an interesting way. There is variety but also harmony/unity.
PROFESSIONALISM (40pts): The project is neat and precise, there are no blemishes,
scratches or scuffs that distract the viewer. All available space is utilized and the project shows
       effort.
ORIGINALITY (20pts) Is you design innovative and original, or simply rote copies of the
       examples given?
