1. Design Fundamentals de
Beaufort
Pattern, Motif, Symmetry
Directions:
1. Using the blank grid supplied in class design a number of small motifs. You may chose to use
pencil first, and then pen in the motif later. You will need at least 14-15 completed motifs for the
project, but I encourage you to make more so that you have a good number to select from.
Please utilize various types of shapes, lines, and positive, negative space. Be creative and look
around you for inspiration. Anything can be a motif, from a smiley face to simple cross-hatching.
2. Photocopy your motif sample page at least 4 times, make sure that the black is solid. You may
chose to "reduce" the image, this sometimes makes it look more "machine" made.
3. Using an x-acto blade, cut out your motifs into squares and arrange them into a grid 4x4 boxes.
It would be a good idea to place some motifs in repetition next to each other. You may chose to
design more than one initial template and chose from the best. Glue all of these squares onto a
sheet of paper, and then photocopy the this template at least 5-6 times.
4. Cut out the template and arrange it in a radially symmetric order on an illustration board. Neatly
glue and crop the board to fit.
5. If you would like extra points, purchase a larger board and repeat you pattern to fill the entire
area up.
Your patterns can be thematic. Pick a subject and create modules that
demonstrate different aspect of this style or subject a matter!
Student Learning Objectives:
1. Design: Students demonstrate a knowledge of positive and negative/space, line weight,
rectilinear, curvilinear form, and biomorphic shapes in the design of their motifs. By arranging the
motifs into a larger ordered symmetry, students demonstrate a knowledge of compositional
organization, crystallographic balance, and radial symmetry. Pattern is explored through
repetition, visual texture, and tessellation.
Grading Rubric:
CONCEPT (40 pts) : The project motifs makes use lines of various weight, a variety of
shapes and forms, and are interesting and engaging visually. There needs to be a good variety of
solid and mid-value, the motifs should not be too simple or too complex, but a good combination.
The template is clearly ordered and unity is achieved through repetition and radial symmetry.
PROFESSIONALISM (40pts): The project is neat and precise, there are no blemishes,
scratches or scuffs that distract the viewer. The squares have been neatly cut, and when
mistakes have been made, they have been neatly concealed. There are no lingering, pencil
marks, finger marks, water spots, etc. The black of the pen is uniformly dark and it does not look
like the pen was running out of ink.
ORIGINALITY (20pts) Are the designs innovative and original, or simply rote copies of the
examples given? Have you chosen an interesting theme for your modular units?
