CLASS EXERCISE
The “bound” slaves originally executed by Michelangelo represent an interesting
dilemma of interpretation. The figures writhe and contort in various states of
bondage and trancelike reverie. They express emotional states through their
poses that are very intense and compelling.
ASSIGNMENT:
Provide two possible explanations for the inclusion of such unusual, compelling,
somewhat erotic, and enigmatic figures for the tomb of pope Julius II. What do
the poses represent? Allegorically? For Michelangelo as an artist?
