Optical memory uses lasers to read and write data on disks. There are several types: read-only, write-once/read-many (WORM), and erasable. Read-only disks can only be read, WORM disks can be written once and read many times, and erasable disks allow writing new data and erasing old data. Data is written on read-only and WORM disks by heating spots with a laser to create bubbles, while erasable disks use magneto-optical recording where laser heating allows magnetic fields to change the disk's magnetization in spots. Lasers are also used to read disks by detecting light reflections from spots.
