Gender Roles In The 1800 s
Men and women who lived in Norway during the 1800 s both were restricted to specific roles in and
outside of the household. However, rarely in the 1800 s did Victorian men and women share the same
responsibilities. If they did, you may have seen the women working alongside husbands and brothers
in the family business (Hughes, Gender roles in the 19th century). This makes women seem as if they
are compared to men as physically weaker during the time period of the Victorian era (Hughes,
Gender roles in 19th century). Also, this demonstrates how women supported men and built them up
so that men could fully use all of their capabilities to be successful at their jobs. Without this
supporting system underlying the men, their businesses may have ... Show more content on

The different activities during Isben s time of staying in these countries are acted out into his plays,
with one of them being A Doll House, resembling his time spent in Norway. He wrote plays that
secretly described his own personal relations, including his relationship with his wife. Nora and
Torvald s relationship is a parallel to Isben and his wife s. Isben and his wife faced difficulties of being
honest to one another, and a reader can imply that Isben shared this with the audience through the use
of the characters Nora and Torvald. In A Doll House Nora takes out a significant amount of money in
loans in order to save her husband. This reveals how Isben s wife had troubles with the debt she owed
for a trip, which she had dared to tell her husband about, comparing to exactly how Nora handled her
finances in the play (Koht 314). Nora somewhat symbolizes Isben s wife being that his wife hoped to
pay off the loan with the money she found elsewhere without her husband finding out, just like Nora
did with signing her fathers name secretly without Mr. Helmer knowing (Koht 314). Isben s found out
that his wife had wrote a forged note and soon divorced her (Koht 315). We see the same thing happen
in A Doll House when Nora decides to leave her family and husband behind. Isben s work

Arsenic Pollution And Arsenic Contamination
a. Inorganic arsenic is highly toxic and a significant public health threat throughout the world. Long
term exposure to arsenic through contaminated water can lead to arsenic poisoning and a variety of
adverse health effects, including skin lesions, cancer, and respiratory and cardiovascular conditions.
However, arsenic is highly abundant in the Earth s crust and is naturally present across the world in
the air, water, and soil. Arsenic integrates into the environment with natural processes including
weathering reactions and volcanic activity, and through anthropogenic processes such as mining, fossil
fuel combustion, and utilization of pesticides.
b. Although arsenic is found throughout the environment, epidemiological studies have ... Show more

In this region, high arsenic concentrations are mostly due to the volcanic activity in the Andes
Mountains. Mining is also widespread in the region, and copper smelting specifically emits arsenic
into the atmosphere. It is difficult to measure mining s impact on arsenic water contamination because
baseline natural levels were not established in the area. Overall, however, arsenic released from
mining processes settles mainly in the atmosphere, and studies have shown that drinking water serves
as the primary path of exposure of arsenic for humans, making the naturally occurring arsenic in the
groundwater a greater threat to human health in Antofagasta. ii. The Antofagasta Region has an
extremely arid climate and low rates of precipitation, which greatly limit water availability and further
exacerbate the effects of the natural arsenic contamination. The Loa River and its tributaries of San
Pedro, Salado, and San Salvador are the only surface water sources, but this river is very saline and
home to a range of arsenic levels. These arsenic levels naturally fluctuate due to its natural volcanic
and geothermal origins, but generally, all the concentrations are above safe set limits for human
consumption as set by the World Health Organization at 10 ug/L.
3. Arsenic Concentration Spikes

The Development Of Engineers Without Borders
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Engineers without Borders aims to provide those living in poverty a higher standard of living through
initiatives specifically engineered for their regions. One such project designed by Engineers without
Borders is the Bambui initiative. Bambui, a village located in the North West Region of Central Africa
s Cameroon contains a small portion of Cameroon s total population of 22.25 million people. Bambui,
with a population of 50,000 people and its poor standard of living proves to be an obstacle. Due to the
lack of infrastructure and urban planning of the markets which provide the village with much needed
income, Engineers without Borders aims to improve the area by addressing these current problems
with solutions.
2.0 PROBLEM DEFINITION
The market of Bambui is one of the largest and most important aspects of the region, providing a
source of income to the local community as well as the surrounding population who sell clothes, shoes
and raw foods as well as food stalls and restaurants. The pollution identified throughout the markets
comes mainly from the inability for them to dispose of waste properly due to lack of transportation in
and out of the market, and also the sprawl of stalls. The accessibility of owners and locals through the
market comes as a struggle and therefore require a plan in which would assist owners to receive their
transported goods and also dispose of waste that was not sold throughout the day.
The pollution affects both the

Martin Luther s Power And Efficacy Of Indulgences
Martin Luther wrote the Power and efficacy of indulgences .Know as the 95 theses. Martin Luther
came up with the 95 theses in Germany in Wittenberg. These 95 theses show what the church was
doing wrong in his time this change the course of the catholic church. See the church would take and
fool the good christian people by take and stealing their money. Like if the person was having a bad
day they would come to the church and the pope are monks would tell them they could feel mary, or
anybody from the bible bones are some fake holy relic or they told them they could drop money in a
pot and when it hit the bottom there person they to wanted to go to heaven went . And they also fooled

The first and second theses were contained Martin idea of Gods intended believer to seek out
repentance and there faith alone with no deeds at all and it would leave them to salvation. Salvation is
the acceptance into heaven, but god did not intend on them doing that stealing other money to benefit
themselves . The other 93 theses criticized the practice of the indulgence. The 93 theses support the

churches teaches. But it was hard for them to believe Martin Luther cause that was what they have
grown up doing following the church that way so he got turndown a lot but he was gain more follower
as they seen what the church was doing to the people. On may 25 the holy roman emperor Charles V
signed the edict against his writing to be burned. Luther hid in a town of Eisenach for 1 year he began

Summary Of Independent Reading Reflection
Independent Reading Reflections #1 Quote: He had no idea what he was. Half of something, a quarter
of something else, brown skin and black hair like his dead mother, but with weird blue eyes like his
father. Response: This is important to the development of the story because it gives us descriptions as
to what he looks like, so we can better visualize the character as the plot progresses. It also describes a
little bit of what his father looks like and what his dead mother used to look like. Questions: How did
his mother die? How could his race effect the story? #2 Quote: Wherever the huge ships lay, scavenge
gangs like nailer s swarmed like flies. Response: This is important because it gives us (the reader)
much needed background information to better visualize and understand the story. Most likely, his job
will play a key role in both the story as it developes, and Nailer s (the main character) development as
a person. Questions: Why are there ships everywhere? When does this take place? (Future?) #3 Quote:
If he d thought about it too much, he didn t know why he saved his father either. It s not as if Richard
Lopez has made his life any easier. Response: I wonder if his father really does love him, but uses the
booze to hide behind his conflicted emotions about losing his wife. This is a similar relationship in the
Outsiders between Ponyboy, and his brother Darry. Ponyboy can t tell if Darry loves him or not,
because he is always hiding his emotions from Ponyboy, for he is so hurt from his mother s and father
s death. Maybe Nailer had a similar thought and that s why he chose to save his dad. Questions: How
will his dad change throughout the story if any? How will Nailer change throughout the story? #4
Quote: They were all looking at the water now. Hungry. You think they even know were here? Moon
girl asked. Pima spat in the sand. Were just flies on garbage to people like that. Response: This quote
reminds me a lot of the book The Outsiders due to the large social gap between poor people and rich
people. In this quote, a Clipper Ship (expensive ship for rich people) is sailing across the water, as the
three main characters watch. One of the characters

Learning the Basic Principles and Concepts of...
I feel that I have learned a lot in this course, and understanding these basic principles of
microeconomics has changed the way that I view everyday activities and transactions. I have a better
understanding of the key concepts that go into decisions we make, whereas before I think I accepted a
lot of everyday decision making at face value. Now I understand that even if it is subconscious we are
making tradeoffs in our decision making.
Going into the course I could easily have repeated concepts like supply and demand without actually
knowing what they really meant, in particular in relation to price and utility. For example when I see
things like the recent talk about gas prices, I can understand the issue much more clearly now.
Whereas before we would loosely think of a concept like gas prices and accept what we hear as to
how those prices come about, I can see now that a lot of what we hear especially from politicians
simply does not match up with reality. Supply is more or less fixed, global demand is rising, and that
is why gas prices are rising. Having a lot more knowledge about how markets really work in this
world allows me to cut through some of the nonsense people say more easily, and I can combat
economic myths I hear from my friends, too.
I think that I absorbed the different concepts we learned fairly well, but unsurprisingly there were a
few things that I either did not pick up as well, or maybe would have learned in a different way. For
myself, I think

Mark Doty s Poem Golden Retrievals
Many pet owners wonder what their pets think about or what they would say if they could talk. Mark
Doty approaches this inquiry and more through his poem Golden Retrievals, a playful yet insightful
glimpse into the relationship between pet and owner from a dog s perspective. The literary device
caesura, or installing interruptions and breaks, encompasses Doty s poem Golden Retrievals. The
breaks between thoughts allow for an interesting portrayal of the differences between pets and
humans, highlighting how humans should live in the present to improve themselves. Doty employs
caesura throughout his poem to display the dog speaker in both a playful light and to convey the
deeper meaning of how they experience complete positivity towards ... Show more content on

However, the issue, as brought to attention by various individuals and highlighted by the barks of dogs
can be fixed. Playing on the dog breed Golden Retrievers, Doty characterizes the pup as a means of
retrieving humankind from the fears of thoughts overtaking happiness, and by offsetting this one
word, he brings a concise realization that humans need advice to live in the present (11). The dogs try
to bring their owners entirely to the present so they can receive as much love as they provide (Doty
14). Since this word, offset in the poem, engenders a powerful response, the speaker hopes that his
actions will make a noticeable difference. The two juxtaposed sides of this poem between playfulness
and reflection of unhappiness aptly describe humans inability to live in the moment, placing dogs
above us since they discover happiness within each day. In fact, dogs may realize their responsibility
to retrieve humans from their haze determining a possible reason why they bark: to call [their owners]
here to the present (Doty 12, 13). Doty concludes the poem strongly with caesura establishing how
humans should fix the problem now, followed by a colon and the onomatopoetic use of barking bow
wow (Doty 14). This forceful end to the dog s thoughts convey the importance of change represented
by the passion in the

Women s Role In The Crusades
The time of the Crusades, as stated by Carol Hillenbrand, spans from 1095 when the Pope Urban II
made his famous call to arms, until the fiftieth centuries and even later, although many pinpoint the
fall of Acre in 1091 as the termination of serious Crusader activity (2012 p. 1) and the events that took
place have changed the course of history and altered the political atmosphere of our world. When
reading though Crusade literature to gain insight into this important time in history, both the Christian
and Muslim perspective accounts, it is easy to overlook the role that women played in the Crusades;
however, if one looks deep enough into the labyrinth of history, he or she will discover the footprints
left behind by the women of the crusades. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the absence of their husband or son, many women were left in charge of the estates that the husband
or son had left behind and some with the burden of financially supporting a relative on crusade and
event taking over their husbands political offices for the duration of the crusade... examples are the
countess of Flanders and Eleanor of Aquitaine (Maier, 2004). As the examples of women that
Jonathan Riley Smith listed, this task proved to require great skill and dedication on the part of the
women (1998, p. 98 99), and often times, as evidenced by the English legal records of that time,
women had to take legal action in order defend these estates and sometimes lost their lives (as cited in
Tyerman 208 217). Clearly, the role that women played on the home front was necessary and
challenging.
Women on the Battlefront
The second category of roles that women played in the crusades are those which occurred on the
battlefield; the roles that this encompasses is not intended to be limited to actual fighting, but instead
to refer to all the roles that those women who came with the crusader army to the East filled. As Keren
Caspi Reisfeld put it some women... engaged in diplomacy that affected the course of the fighting;
others provided moral or physical support to the crusaders on the battle field, the most daring
women... mounted on horses dressed in armor and bearing lances (2002, p. 95).

A True Hero In William Golding s Lord Of The Flies
A true hero is not the one in the spotlight afraid of what the people will think about his actions a true
hero stands and proclaims for what is right although people may despise him for his/her actions. The
heros of real life are usually the one that people think are considered over the top and usually end up
being ignored while people agree with a person who says the same thing but only slightly less over the
top. William Golding saw this and have incorporated into his novel Lord of the Flies. Due to the
recurring pattern of the hero being the protagonist people automatically assumes the protagonist to be
the hero, although he/she may not be the hero, but rather a support character as shown in the novel
Lord of the Flies.
The definition of a hero is a person who struggles against evil for what is right. In most literature the
villain embodies the evil that the hero is struggling against. The hero most often is the person who is
struggling against. In the beginning of the book Jack clearly did not enjoy Piggy s presence as is
proven when Jack snapped at Piggy when he was telling them the names of the boy around them. Jack
was originally alright with Ralph but he never liked Piggy. From the beginning of the book this is is
already setting up the classic format of having the villain mark the hero as the enemy at the beginning.
Jack was not only against Piggy for the beginning of the book I got the conch Jack turned fiercely You
shut up! (42) this show that Piggy is still struggling against Jack the villain of the novel trying to
withhold Piggy form speaking reason to the people of the island. Jack is not only insulting him, but he
has malicious intents towards Piggy. He took a step, and able at last to hit someone, stuck his fist into
Piggy s stomach (75) Jack could of chose to lash out at Ralph but instead he went towards Piggy
because although he and Ralph may bump heads they are still friends but Piggy is his enemy.
The main reason that Ralph is considered to be the hero of the narrative is because of the common
assumption that the protagonist is always the hero. In most literature this is correct, but there are
always exceptions, many times even if the protagonist is the villain people still trying

The Importance Of Western Culture And Punjabi Culture
A constant struggle of incorporating western mentality and remaining true to my Punjabi culture has
been at the root of many dilemmas throughout my life and has caused me to engender my own set of
values, which reflect a unique blend of western culture and Punjabi culture. As a future marriage and
family therapist who will be assessing a diverse population, I foresee this amalgamation becoming an
issue when I receive clients who come from a similar background and have a certain expectation of
what I should say, or when I receive clients who come from a different background and have different
values than I do. If one is not consciously aware of these values and biases, then it is very likely that
these concerns will impede the therapeutic relationship and the work of the therapist. For instance,
Punjabi culture emphasizes parents sacrificing their own happiness for their children s happiness,
which can be seen via parents not getting a divorce for a child s happiness. I have seen the latter occur
many times, even in instances where the parents cannot stand one another. Growing up I understood
this mentality, because I had witnessed my American friends going through turmoil when finding out
their parents were getting a divorce. At the time, I believed that the parents were selfish, that they were
not considering what this would do to their child. Additionally, my family had also pushed forth this
value in our home, even in instances where my aunts were living with alcoholic

Side Effects Of The Movie Shutter Island
Mental disorders can have dangerous and harmful side effects. In the movie Shutter Island, there are
many examples of a mental illness that are harmful to an individual. There are three effects that seem
more harmful and long term. First, many people who are sleep deprived for an extended period tend to
have difficulties with their mental state. Mental illness can often cause an individual to react to an
emotional situation in a more violent manor. Most importantly, when one s mental state is damaged,
flashbacks and distorted memories are common. Many people who suffer from psychological
problems are often troubles with insomnia as a side effect because sleep requires a steady mind.
Shutter island is a thriller/drama featuring Leonardo DiCaprio playing the role of a character named
Teddy Daniels who is a U.S. Marshal who suffers with severe PTSD. The beginning of the movie
really makes you question how this movie is going to take place. This is a type of movie with several
flashbacks and starts in the middle of the movie, unfolding layers of information before finally
revealing the beginning in the end. The movie leads you to believe that Teddy and his partner come to
shutter island as U.S. Marshalls to investigate a patient that has escaped from the mental hospital on
shutter island. In order to access the island, Teddy and his partner must take the boat in. Once they get
off the boat they try to get every piece of information on how this patient escaped.

How Does Social Media Have A Negative Effect On Body Image
As Theodore Roosevelt once said, Comparison is the thief of joy. Many women and men often find
themselves obsessed with comparison to others. People often look at themselves in the mirror and
think that they are not good enough, and that they are not pretty or skinny. Social media plays a huge
role in this. Celebrities photos can be so fake and edited on social media to the point where the photo
does not even look like them. Young women and girls spend so much time on social media and this is
all they see. It is no wonder that their self esteem is so low. They are looking at pictures of unrealistic
bodies for hours and hours on end. A recent poll by CNN stated that, Thirty five percent of young
women and girls, are worried about other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some people always look in the mirror and think they look bad or ugly. They may do this because they
spend hours and hours on end looking at pictures that are very much fake and photoshopped. Many
people may compare themselves to other celebrities and people. Social media is the main cause of
this. There are no positives to comparing yourself with others. Comparing yourself with others will
lead to either an inferiority complex or a superiority complex. Both of which will have a negative
effect on your self improvement in the long run (Selvam). When young girls are spending the majority
of their day on social media and they are looking at these pictures they do not know any better and are
of course going to compare themselves to others. The young women might not even be looking at real
pictures of people instead photoshopped and unrealistic bodies. Us teens believe it or not, can
sometimes be like monkeys. We would much rather have something sweet than a boring vegetable.
That something sweet could be having a hot or sexy body. Rather than a have a boring and ugly body
like the boring vegetable. We really are beautiful on the inside and outside and we most definitely do
not need to edit our bodies to the ideal image for the public and the rest of the

The Signs Of Shopping By Anne Norton
Shopping, a common activity conducted by almost everyone at least once a month, is such a normal
subject in our everyday life, one barely puts any thoughts into the potential semiotic explanations
behind it. According to the two essays, The Signs of Shopping and The Science of Shopping,
Shopping has significant impacts on one s self identification. It is a two way straight, the consumers
shopping styles can also influence the economic status of the retails businesses. The Signs of

Women can seek self worth from working, volunteering, and even directly participating in their daily

Mourning and Melancholia After a tragic loss someone will go through a grieving process that will
either be constructive or destructive. Mourning is a period of time when the person experiencing this
loss begins to search for reconciliation and a way to deal with the sadness. They will attempt to move
on, forgive and forget, the past. Freud wrote that mourning is a normal reaction to the loss of a love
object, which is consciously known and identifiable. People mourning will express their sadness but
will be able to eventually part from their love lost. Inversely, Freud says that melancholia develops
when the sadness is inappropriate to the situation and becomes internalized. The person suffering from
melancholia identifies the lost ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

again out on that ocean, Lai this person you call your mother is nothing but a corpse living only to

Melancholic patients might seek revenge against the lost loved one by tormenting themselves. The
normal stage of bereavement defined as anger turns inward and becomes a conflict between love and
hate that attacks the ego, according to Freud s theory. These patients might feel deeply dejected and
lose all interest in external activities. This is exactly what is seen in the character of Mai when she has
her mental breakdown and expresses her feelings to her son. Mai and Socheata deal with sadness and
loss very differently. Socheata mourns and eventually overcomes her grief. She forgives her mother
for having kept secrets and forgives the ex Khmer Rouge people for the objectives they carried out.
Finally, her mourning process concludes as she takes part in her ceremonial birth at the Buddhist
temple. Her experiences of loss end on a more positive note than those of Mai. Mai has suffered so
much she can no longer look to the future with optimism. Her life ended when she lost her husband
and she cannot overcome the sadness. For her all is lost

A Brief Note On An Accidental Racial War
An Accidental Racial War.
An accidental fight started at school to where no parties were at fault until a circle was formed around
us showing all the students that I am white and she is black. The school was enjoying a festival
watching a talent show when a girl behind me accidently spilled her nachos on to my head, this may
have started a fight against many students primarily of opposite races and I was to blame.
I went to a public Junior High School in Long beach, CA. This was a very culturally diversified
school; the students had their clicks, as most students would call them. This is typically groups of
people of the same interests: jocks, nerds, rebels, hippies and groups of the same racial background:
African American, Caucasian, Filipino, Korean, Hispanic, or Samoan. The whole school was treated
to a festival with good food, music, games and a talent show showcasing student performers. Some of
the performers played instruments, acted out dramas, or danced. The festival was outside in the food
court area, where we typically have lunch. It was a warm day and I was sitting by myself in a crowd of
students watching the talent show. My legs were crossed on the floor, however, feeling a bit bored I
decided to wrap the straps of my backpack around my legs tangling them. The talent show was
coming to an end and the DJ started to play some music.

What is moral philosophy? Moral philosophy refers to the branch of philosophy concerned with
ethics, in other words, What actions are right or wrong in particular circumstances? . Although there
are two apparent options to choose from (the right one, and the wrong one), morals and ethics are
more complicated than what we perceive it to be at first glance. For example, who decides which of
the two is the more morally correct option? What one perceives to be the right option, may be an
incorrect option to another person. So which person is morally correct? We can now clearly see how
subjective morals and ethics can be. Although you may now come to the conclusion that there is no
right option, and that the morally correct option is simply an opinion, various renowned philosophers
have set out on a mission to identify the best method to determine the most morally correct action.
Who was Immanuel Kant?
Immanuel Kant (1724 1804) is one of the most influential philosophers, renowned for his contribution
to various branches of philosophy, including metaphysics, epistemology, aesthetics, and ethics.
In relation to the most morally correct philosophy, Kant was a vigorous advocate of deontology. He
was a firm believer that reason (rational thinking) is the source of morality, that is, our actions should
not be influenced by emotions (particularly happiness), but purely based off duty and obligations.
To solidify his judgement of what he perceives to be the

##lational And Intersectional Similarities In The Story...
Intro
In the story Desi Hoop Dreams a character named Mustafa expresses relational and intersectional
dimensions. The story compares and contrasts identities of different cultures within the Atlanta
basketball society. Race, class, gender, and ethnicity are all demonstrated through different ways in the
eyes of Mustafa. Mustafa s ideas about himself and others give examples of what South Asian
American life is like in the United States. We see the relational and intersectional identities in the story
when Mustafa is playing basketball, going to clubs, and eating at Waffle House with his friends.
Many South Asian Americans are often stereotyped as terrorist figures or nerds in the United States.
Their masculinity is also questioned on the basketball court. Mustafa tries to mimic American
masculinity and citizenship by playing basketball in different leagues. This is a relational identity,
because he looks at Americans and contrasts their intersecting identities to his own. We see Mustafa
acting masculine when he tells Khan to man up and be a beast (Thangaraj 11). This is ironic because
he is acting like the perceived American when talking to a fellow desi. More perceptions of typical
South Asian Americans on the court were seen when Mustafa was playing with Emory University
students. Little Sheik and the three others were lacking basketball skills and didn t provide
competition (Thangaraj 27). On the other hand, Mustafa was playing on a way higher level. The

Writing Center Research Paper
The Writing Center Writing is often a difficult task for students, especially when having to transition
from five paragraph essays in high school, to twelve page college essays. We often struggle with
conveying our message, but have no fear, the Writing Center is here! The MSU Writing Center is a
great resource for brainstorming, editing, and obviously, WRITING. A similar resource looked at in
this review is the Math Learning Center, because it also helps students with all varieties of the main
subject at hand.
Located in Bessey Hall in room 300, the Bessey Writing Center is the busiest and largest of the
centers. Anyone can make an appointment on Monday to Thursday from 9:00AM to 5:00PM, and on
Friday from 9:00AM to 2:00PM. In order to get a help session, one must first sign up for an

How to Write a Song Essay
How to Write a Song by Allyson Jones Think back to the last time you heard your favorite song. You
plant your headphones on, close your eyes, and completely immerse yourself in the music. You hang
on to every word and every note, enchanted by the passionate vocals and addictive melodies. But have
you ever wondered what really goes into making a song? Every Songwriter uses different methods to
compose a song. In fact, if you were to type how to write a song in a Google search bar, you would get

Inspiration can strike at any time, so always be prepared to document your idea. This is where the
recording device comes into play. The Inspiration usually comes in the form of a melody. When a
melody hits you, its important to record it as soon as possible. There s nothing worse than coming up
with a great melody while sitting on a train, or driving in rush hour traffic, and having no way to
document it, so be prepared! Don t be afraid to hum the melody into your recording device, or sing it
in gibberish. At this point, words are not important. Next, you need to build upon the melody. Decide
what sort of vibe this melody portrays, and stick to it! Is it sad, happy, angry? Then use your
instrument of choice, a guitar in my case, to make a sample melody for the song. I use the words
sample melody because It will be subject to change, depending on the lyrics and structure of the song.
You ll need that pen and paper for this next step. The next step, and by far the most important, is to
write the lyrics. Lyrics can make or break a song. Before writing the lyrics, it is important to ask
questions: What are you trying to get across to the listener? What is the atmosphere of the song? Are
you telling a story? Once you ve answered these questions, you can develop the theme of your song.
You also have to consider the structure. There are generally 4 components to a song: the verse, pre
chorus, chorus, and bridge. The opening line should grab the listener s

The Hobbit, And The Lord Of The Rings
The interaction of fate and free will in the primary world is a very complex, intertwined phenomenon.
However, in Tolkien s works The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings, there is a
recognizable pattern that is set. More specifically this pattern regarding fate is established
cosmologically through his story of creation (the Ainulindale ), and the precedent is set for how
individual choice affects the events that follow. This pattern will be used to establish how Tolkien
views the effect of determination on determinism throughout his other works. According the story of
the Ainulindale , the Valar Melkor attempted to go against the harmony of the song of Illuvatar.1 To
this end he left to Middle Earth upon its creation to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Feanor chose freely to pursue the Silmarils, just as easily as he could have chosen to destroy the
Silmarils. This calls into question the cosmology in The Silmarillion, because Feanor essentially went
against the will of the gods on Middle Earth at the time, and forsook his happy life for greed over a
physical object. He was allowed to make this choice however, and not even the gods stepped in the
way to change his decision.6 Ultimately it was irrelevant, however, due to the oath he invoked he was
fated never to obtain the Silmarils, in fact they were eventually lost to everyone and caused more
death and chaos than the beauty they were intended to be.7 One such event that was spurred on by the
chase for the Silmarils was the murder of Thingol by the dwarves. This led to animosity that was
prevalent in The Hobbit, which was thousands of years later.8 The acquisition of the Ring by Bilbo is
another matter of ambiguity when it comes to fate and free will, however it was stated explicitly that
the Ring had agency and it s primary goal was to return to it s master.9 The fact that the Ring exerted a
type of free will in it s choices of bearers is an extraordinary feat, but ultimately it serves the will of
Sauron, so even

Comparing Hamlet And Zeffirelli s Movies
All films about Hamlet have extremely close similarities. However, certain aspects of one movie
enhances the play even more. Though all three films were great, the most exceptional film of the three
is the version by Franco Zeffirelli. The reason why this film is better than the others is because Hamlet
s character is more compelling, Freudian theory makes the play more interesting, and because the
small details in the movie make the play better.
To begin, Hamlet s character in Franco Zeffirelli s film is more interesting than the other three films
watched because Hamlet s character is more insane than the other two. To give an example, in the first
movie, Hamlet s character shows his insanity by contemplating suicide on a cliff. This scene ... Show

With Freudian theory, the play Hamlet is even more interesting. With the Freudian theory lens, when
watching Hamlet, one could see how the Oedipus complex is present. Without learning the lens, the
play Hamlet would be straightforward and the viewers would lack the ability to see the tension
between Hamlet and his mother. Without Freudian theory, Hamlet is like any other typical movie
about revenge, however with the addition of this lens, the audience has a newer perspective on the
film which makes it more interesting. The first film has a little Freudian theory present, but it does not
show what Hamlet truly wants greatly, thereby making the plot of the play boring. The audience
already has an idea about how the movie will end, which is with Claudius dying. In the last film, the
audience can also assume what is going to happen to Claudius because the plot is very
straightforward. The difference in the second movie, however, is that Freudian theory is shown.
Freudian theory adds to the plot and theme of the play and this prevents the watchers from knowing
what the plot is about. Not only does Hamlet want to kill his uncle, he also wants to have sexual
intercourse with his mother. The audience cannot extrapolate this idea from the plot and because of
this it surprises them and enhances the

Memento Mori Essay
Memento Mori is a short story following a man struggling with anterograde amnesia and his pursuit of
his wife s murderer. The short story was adapted into a feature length film titled Memento which
makes many changes to the narrative structure and characters of the short story, but maintains the
same premise. Memento Mori features multiple narrators, one first person and one third person. The
first person narration is provided by the story s protagonist Earl via notes addressed to a you, which
turns out to be Earl. The third person narrator provides details as to what actions Earl is currently

As Christians we are trying to re invent our beliefs, faith and righteous living to fit in the modern

the world into Christianity. Christians are trying to hold on to what God expects us to do and living
righteously but it is getting harder as the world is changing.
There has also been a decline in spiritual enrichment in churches to its followers which has allowed
new religions and new age innovations to come up. Christians convert to these religions trying to look

worldly knowledge. There is no longer the idea of one truth, one correct body of knowledge, (Bruce,

The Five Competitive Strategies For Wal Mart
Five Competitive Strategies
The five generic competitive strategies are low cost provider, broad differentiation, focused low cost,
focused differentiation strategy, and best cost provider strategy. According to the textbook, a company
s competitive strategy deals exclusively with the specifics of management s game plan for competing
successfully (Gamble, 93).
The main objective of a low cost provider is to achieve a lower overall cost than its main competitors
and rivals by means of underpricing (Gamble, 93). This is also known as price advantage in order to
attract customers. Companies that use this strategy will achieve high sales volumes while striving for
low cost margins. For example, Wal Mart is known to have considerable low prices that attract a broad
spectrum of customers. People who shop at Wal Mart are familiar with their Rollback Prices which
focus on the idea of everyday low prices that are sold at a far cheaper rate than its main competitors.
They are able to sustain these prices because of a successful supply chain market. Many of the
products they sell are from foreign and domestic markets that focus on a lower price demand. This
allows Wal Mart to sell their products at lower prices at a high volume. Basically, they buy a huge
quantity in volume in order to achieve a lower price to gain a higher profit.
The second company that also uses a low cost strategy is McDonald s. The Golden Arches is a well

St. Augustine Dualism
The thought of St. Augustine revolved around dualisms, inheritance of Plato and Oriental Manicheans.
Welfare, body and spirit were totally separate. The philosopher condemned the sins of the flesh and
claimed that faith was essential to life. St. Thomas Aquinas is a counterpoint to St. Augustine, putting
reason first. He even tried to explain his faith by rational means, claiming that he could prove an
existence of God. He argued that everything is in motion and someone causes all movement; That
way, there needs to be an initial cause, a first mover, as he called it. In addition, it has found that there
needs to be a God to make the universe in perfect harmony.
Christianity was consolidated at this time: although it was only four hundred years old, it was
considered the irrefutable truth. Nevertheless, Saint Augustine, who was born in North Africa, in a city
called Tagaste, was not always a Christian. He made his first studies in his hometown and, with the
help of a friend, went to Carthage at the age of sixteen to complete his studies. He was not a good
student. In his youth, he hated studying Greek. He was interested in philosophy when reading a work
by Cicero.
As a child he was a Christian, but later he passed through other religions, such as the Manichaeans,

  • 2. Gender Roles In The 1800 s Men and women who lived in Norway during the 1800 s both were restricted to specific roles in and outside of the household. However, rarely in the 1800 s did Victorian men and women share the same responsibilities. If they did, you may have seen the women working alongside husbands and brothers in the family business (Hughes, Gender roles in the 19th century). This makes women seem as if they are compared to men as physically weaker during the time period of the Victorian era (Hughes, Gender roles in 19th century). Also, this demonstrates how women supported men and built them up so that men could fully use all of their capabilities to be successful at their jobs. Without this supporting system underlying the men, their businesses may have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The different activities during Isben s time of staying in these countries are acted out into his plays, with one of them being A Doll House, resembling his time spent in Norway. He wrote plays that secretly described his own personal relations, including his relationship with his wife. Nora and Torvald s relationship is a parallel to Isben and his wife s. Isben and his wife faced difficulties of being honest to one another, and a reader can imply that Isben shared this with the audience through the use of the characters Nora and Torvald. In A Doll House Nora takes out a significant amount of money in loans in order to save her husband. This reveals how Isben s wife had troubles with the debt she owed for a trip, which she had dared to tell her husband about, comparing to exactly how Nora handled her finances in the play (Koht 314). Nora somewhat symbolizes Isben s wife being that his wife hoped to pay off the loan with the money she found elsewhere without her husband finding out, just like Nora did with signing her fathers name secretly without Mr. Helmer knowing (Koht 314). Isben s found out that his wife had wrote a forged note and soon divorced her (Koht 315). We see the same thing happen in A Doll House when Nora decides to leave her family and husband behind. • 3. Arsenic Pollution And Arsenic Contamination a. Inorganic arsenic is highly toxic and a significant public health threat throughout the world. Long term exposure to arsenic through contaminated water can lead to arsenic poisoning and a variety of adverse health effects, including skin lesions, cancer, and respiratory and cardiovascular conditions. However, arsenic is highly abundant in the Earth s crust and is naturally present across the world in the air, water, and soil. Arsenic integrates into the environment with natural processes including weathering reactions and volcanic activity, and through anthropogenic processes such as mining, fossil fuel combustion, and utilization of pesticides. b. Although arsenic is found throughout the environment, epidemiological studies have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this region, high arsenic concentrations are mostly due to the volcanic activity in the Andes Mountains. Mining is also widespread in the region, and copper smelting specifically emits arsenic into the atmosphere. It is difficult to measure mining s impact on arsenic water contamination because baseline natural levels were not established in the area. Overall, however, arsenic released from mining processes settles mainly in the atmosphere, and studies have shown that drinking water serves as the primary path of exposure of arsenic for humans, making the naturally occurring arsenic in the groundwater a greater threat to human health in Antofagasta. ii. The Antofagasta Region has an extremely arid climate and low rates of precipitation, which greatly limit water availability and further exacerbate the effects of the natural arsenic contamination. The Loa River and its tributaries of San Pedro, Salado, and San Salvador are the only surface water sources, but this river is very saline and home to a range of arsenic levels. These arsenic levels naturally fluctuate due to its natural volcanic and geothermal origins, but generally, all the concentrations are above safe set limits for human consumption as set by the World Health Organization at 10 ug/L. 3. Arsenic Concentration Spikes a. What happened? i. In Northern Chile, there was a significant increase in arsenic concentration and exposure from1958 to 1970. The growing ... One such project designed by Engineers without Borders is the Bambui initiative. Bambui, a village located in the North West Region of Central Africa s Cameroon contains a small portion of Cameroon s total population of 22.25 million people. Bambui, with a population of 50,000 people and its poor standard of living proves to be an obstacle. Due to the lack of infrastructure and urban planning of the markets which provide the village with much needed income, Engineers without Borders aims to improve the area by addressing these current problems with solutions. 2.0 PROBLEM DEFINITION The market of Bambui is one of the largest and most important aspects of the region, providing a source of income to the local community as well as the surrounding population who sell clothes, shoes and raw foods as well as food stalls and restaurants. • 6. Summary Of Independent Reading Reflection Independent Reading Reflections #1 Quote: He had no idea what he was. Half of something, a quarter of something else, brown skin and black hair like his dead mother, but with weird blue eyes like his father. Response: This is important to the development of the story because it gives us descriptions as to what he looks like, so we can better visualize the character as the plot progresses. It also describes a little bit of what his father looks like and what his dead mother used to look like. Questions: How did his mother die? How could his race effect the story? #2 Quote: Wherever the huge ships lay, scavenge gangs like nailer s swarmed like flies. Response: This is important because it gives us (the reader) much needed background information to better visualize and understand the story. Most likely, his job will play a key role in both the story as it developes, and Nailer s (the main character) development as a person. Questions: Why are there ships everywhere? When does this take place? (Future?) #3 Quote: If he d thought about it too much, he didn t know why he saved his father either. It s not as if Richard Lopez has made his life any easier. Response: I wonder if his father really does love him, but uses the booze to hide behind his conflicted emotions about losing his wife. This is a similar relationship in the Outsiders between Ponyboy, and his brother Darry. Ponyboy can t tell if Darry loves him or not, because he is always hiding his emotions from Ponyboy, for he is so hurt from his mother s and father s death. Maybe Nailer had a similar thought and that s why he chose to save his dad. Questions: How will his dad change throughout the story if any? How will Nailer change throughout the story? #4 Quote: They were all looking at the water now. Hungry. You think they even know were here? Moon girl asked. Pima spat in the sand. Were just flies on garbage to people like that. Response: This quote reminds me a lot of the book The Outsiders due to the large social gap between poor people and rich people. In this quote, a Clipper Ship (expensive ship for rich people) is sailing across the water, as the three main characters watch. One of the characters ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I feel that I have learned a lot in this course, and understanding these basic principles of microeconomics has changed the way that I view everyday activities and transactions. I have a better understanding of the key concepts that go into decisions we make, whereas before I think I accepted a lot of everyday decision making at face value. Now I understand that even if it is subconscious we are making tradeoffs in our decision making. Going into the course I could easily have repeated concepts like supply and demand without actually knowing what they really meant, in particular in relation to price and utility. For example when I see things like the recent talk about gas prices, I can understand the issue much more clearly now. Whereas before we would loosely think of a concept like gas prices and accept what we hear as to how those prices come about, I can see now that a lot of what we hear especially from politicians simply does not match up with reality. Supply is more or less fixed, global demand is rising, and that is why gas prices are rising. Having a lot more knowledge about how markets really work in this world allows me to cut through some of the nonsense people say more easily, and I can combat economic myths I hear from my friends, too. I think that I absorbed the different concepts we learned fairly well, but unsurprisingly there were a few things that I either did not pick up as well, or maybe would have learned in a different way. • 8. Mark Doty s Poem Golden Retrievals Many pet owners wonder what their pets think about or what they would say if they could talk. Mark Doty approaches this inquiry and more through his poem Golden Retrievals, a playful yet insightful glimpse into the relationship between pet and owner from a dog s perspective. The literary device caesura, or installing interruptions and breaks, encompasses Doty s poem Golden Retrievals. The breaks between thoughts allow for an interesting portrayal of the differences between pets and humans, highlighting how humans should live in the present to improve themselves. Doty employs caesura throughout his poem to display the dog speaker in both a playful light and to convey the deeper meaning of how they experience complete positivity towards ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the issue, as brought to attention by various individuals and highlighted by the barks of dogs can be fixed. Playing on the dog breed Golden Retrievers, Doty characterizes the pup as a means of retrieving humankind from the fears of thoughts overtaking happiness, and by offsetting this one word, he brings a concise realization that humans need advice to live in the present (11). The dogs try to bring their owners entirely to the present so they can receive as much love as they provide (Doty 14). Since this word, offset in the poem, engenders a powerful response, the speaker hopes that his actions will make a noticeable difference. The two juxtaposed sides of this poem between playfulness and reflection of unhappiness aptly describe humans inability to live in the moment, placing dogs above us since they discover happiness within each day. In fact, dogs may realize their responsibility to retrieve humans from their haze determining a possible reason why they bark: to call [their owners] here to the present (Doty 12, 13). Doty concludes the poem strongly with caesura establishing how humans should fix the problem now, followed by a colon and the onomatopoetic use of barking bow wow (Doty 14). • 9. Women s Role In The Crusades The time of the Crusades, as stated by Carol Hillenbrand, spans from 1095 when the Pope Urban II made his famous call to arms, until the fiftieth centuries and even later, although many pinpoint the fall of Acre in 1091 as the termination of serious Crusader activity (2012 p. 1) and the events that took place have changed the course of history and altered the political atmosphere of our world. When reading though Crusade literature to gain insight into this important time in history, both the Christian and Muslim perspective accounts, it is easy to overlook the role that women played in the Crusades; however, if one looks deep enough into the labyrinth of history, he or she will discover the footprints left behind by the women of the crusades. ... As the examples of women that Jonathan Riley Smith listed, this task proved to require great skill and dedication on the part of the women (1998, p. 98 99), and often times, as evidenced by the English legal records of that time, women had to take legal action in order defend these estates and sometimes lost their lives (as cited in Tyerman 208 217). • 10. A True Hero In William Golding s Lord Of The Flies A true hero is not the one in the spotlight afraid of what the people will think about his actions a true hero stands and proclaims for what is right although people may despise him for his/her actions. The heros of real life are usually the one that people think are considered over the top and usually end up being ignored while people agree with a person who says the same thing but only slightly less over the top. William Golding saw this and have incorporated into his novel Lord of the Flies. Due to the recurring pattern of the hero being the protagonist people automatically assumes the protagonist to be the hero, although he/she may not be the hero, but rather a support character as shown in the novel Lord of the Flies. The definition of a hero is a person who struggles against evil for what is right. In most literature the villain embodies the evil that the hero is struggling against. The hero most often is the person who is struggling against. In the beginning of the book Jack clearly did not enjoy Piggy s presence as is proven when Jack snapped at Piggy when he was telling them the names of the boy around them. Jack was originally alright with Ralph but he never liked Piggy. From the beginning of the book this is is already setting up the classic format of having the villain mark the hero as the enemy at the beginning. Jack was not only against Piggy for the beginning of the book I got the conch Jack turned fiercely You shut up! He took a step, and able at last to hit someone, stuck his fist into Piggy s stomach (75) Jack could of chose to lash out at Ralph but instead he went towards Piggy because although he and Ralph may bump heads they are still friends but Piggy is his enemy. The Importance Of Western Culture And Punjabi Culture A constant struggle of incorporating western mentality and remaining true to my Punjabi culture has been at the root of many dilemmas throughout my life and has caused me to engender my own set of values, which reflect a unique blend of western culture and Punjabi culture. As a future marriage and family therapist who will be assessing a diverse population, I foresee this amalgamation becoming an issue when I receive clients who come from a similar background and have a certain expectation of what I should say, or when I receive clients who come from a different background and have different values than I do. If one is not consciously aware of these values and biases, then it is very likely that these concerns will impede the therapeutic relationship and the work of the therapist. For instance, Punjabi culture emphasizes parents sacrificing their own happiness for their children s happiness, which can be seen via parents not getting a divorce for a child s happiness. I have seen the latter occur many times, even in instances where the parents cannot stand one another. Growing up I understood this mentality, because I had witnessed my American friends going through turmoil when finding out their parents were getting a divorce. At the time, I believed that the parents were selfish, that they were not considering what this would do to their child. Freud wrote that mourning is a normal reaction to the loss of a love object, which is consciously known and identifiable. Moral philosophy refers to the branch of philosophy concerned with ethics, in other words, What actions are right or wrong in particular circumstances? . Although there are two apparent options to choose from (the right one, and the wrong one), morals and ethics are more complicated than what we perceive it to be at first glance. For example, who decides which of the two is the more morally correct option? What one perceives to be the right option, may be an incorrect option to another person. So which person is morally correct? We can now clearly see how subjective morals and ethics can be. Although you may now come to the conclusion that there is no right option, and that the morally correct option is simply an opinion, various renowned philosophers have set out on a mission to identify the best method to determine the most morally correct action. Who was Immanuel Kant? Immanuel Kant (1724 1804) is one of the most influential philosophers, renowned for his contribution to various branches of philosophy, including metaphysics, epistemology, aesthetics, and ethics. In relation to the most morally correct philosophy, Kant was a vigorous advocate of deontology. Many South Asian Americans are often stereotyped as terrorist figures or nerds in the United States. Their masculinity is also questioned on the basketball court. Mustafa tries to mimic American masculinity and citizenship by playing basketball in different leagues. This is a relational identity, because he looks at Americans and contrasts their intersecting identities to his own. Before writing the lyrics, it is important to ask questions: What are you trying to get across to the listener? What is the atmosphere of the song? Are you telling a story? Once you ve answered these questions, you can develop the theme of your song. You also have to consider the structure. • 25. The Hobbit, And The Lord Of The Rings The interaction of fate and free will in the primary world is a very complex, intertwined phenomenon. However, in Tolkien s works The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings, there is a recognizable pattern that is set. More specifically this pattern regarding fate is established cosmologically through his story of creation (the Ainulindale ), and the precedent is set for how individual choice affects the events that follow. This pattern will be used to establish how Tolkien views the effect of determination on determinism throughout his other works. According the story of the Ainulindale , the Valar Melkor attempted to go against the harmony of the song of Illuvatar.1 To this end he left to Middle Earth upon its creation to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Feanor chose freely to pursue the Silmarils, just as easily as he could have chosen to destroy the Silmarils. This calls into question the cosmology in The Silmarillion, because Feanor essentially went against the will of the gods on Middle Earth at the time, and forsook his happy life for greed over a physical object. He was allowed to make this choice however, and not even the gods stepped in the way to change his decision.6 Ultimately it was irrelevant, however, due to the oath he invoked he was fated never to obtain the Silmarils, in fact they were eventually lost to everyone and caused more death and chaos than the beauty they were intended to be.7 One such event that was spurred on by the chase for the Silmarils was the murder of Thingol by the dwarves. This led to animosity that was prevalent in The Hobbit, which was thousands of years later.8 The acquisition of the Ring by Bilbo is another matter of ambiguity when it comes to fate and free will, however it was stated explicitly that the Ring had agency and it s primary goal was to return to it s master.9 The fact that the Ring exerted a type of free will in it s choices of bearers is an extraordinary feat, but ultimately it serves the will of Sauron, so even ... Though all three films were great, the most exceptional film of the three is the version by Franco Zeffirelli. The reason why this film is better than the others is because Hamlet s character is more compelling, Freudian theory makes the play more interesting, and because the small details in the movie make the play better. To begin, Hamlet s character in Franco Zeffirelli s film is more interesting than the other three films watched because Hamlet s character is more insane than the other two. With Freudian theory, the play Hamlet is even more interesting. With the Freudian theory lens, when watching Hamlet, one could see how the Oedipus complex is present. Without learning the lens, the play Hamlet would be straightforward and the viewers would lack the ability to see the tension between Hamlet and his mother. Without Freudian theory, Hamlet is like any other typical movie about revenge, however with the addition of this lens, the audience has a newer perspective on the film which makes it more interesting. The first film has a little Freudian theory present, but it does not show what Hamlet truly wants greatly, thereby making the plot of the play boring. The audience already has an idea about how the movie will end, which is with Claudius dying. In the last film, the audience can also assume what is going to happen to Claudius because the plot is very straightforward. The difference in the second movie, however, is that Freudian theory is shown. Freudian theory adds to the plot and theme of the play and this prevents the watchers from knowing what the plot is about. Not only does Hamlet want to kill his uncle, he also wants to have sexual intercourse with his mother. The audience cannot extrapolate this idea from the plot and because of this it surprises them and enhances the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to the textbook, a company s competitive strategy deals exclusively with the specifics of management s game plan for competing successfully (Gamble, 93). The main objective of a low cost provider is to achieve a lower overall cost than its main competitors and rivals by means of underpricing (Gamble, 93). This is also known as price advantage in order to attract customers. Companies that use this strategy will achieve high sales volumes while striving for low cost margins. For example, Wal Mart is known to have considerable low prices that attract a broad spectrum of customers. The philosopher condemned the sins of the flesh and claimed that faith was essential to life. St. Thomas Aquinas is a counterpoint to St. Augustine, putting reason first. He even tried to explain his faith by rational means, claiming that he could prove an existence of God. He argued that everything is in motion and someone causes all movement; That way, there needs to be an initial cause, a first mover, as he called it.
