Ww1 Austria-Hungary Research Paper
This essay will attempt to answer the question To what extent is Austria Hungary at fault for
causing the start of World War One? This topic is significant due to the ongoing debate about
how WWI started and because of the debt some countries only recently, have paid off. In 1914,
the country to declare the first war was Austria Hungary s(AH) declaration of war on Serbia.
Following this was Serbia s ally, Russia, who mobilized its troops in preparation, and Germany
soon after declaring war on the russians. As the snowball effect came into place, countries such as
France, the United Kingdom and Belgium followed in declaring different wars amongst each other.
This resulted in the start of World War I
. It began in 1914 one of the greatest wars in all of history,
ending almost five years after in November of 1918. The causes of WWI, will continuously spark
debates between people, as there were so many countries involved. This essay will argue that
Austria Hungary is mostly to blame for inducing the beginning of the First World War. Evidence of
this appears when looking at crises such as... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, Austria s imperialistic aims had become to diminish Serbia s power for the benefit of
expanding their own empire. An example of how they went about this was the Balkan Crisis. The
Balkan Crisis involved countries that wanted to increase their size into more land area. An issue
that Austria Hungary dealt with was that as they expanded the empire struggled with keeping the
different ethnic groups together. A way of distracting from these internal conflicts, was to go to
war. The imperialistic ideas of Austria Hungary contributed to their declaration of war because of
their fight for pride. For the longest time, Austria Hungary and Serbia fought over land and power.
For this reason, Austria Hungary was quick to declare war on Serbia to finally settle the debate of

My Experience At The Niagara Falls
We had never been out of the country before, and we couldn t wait for the first time. The day I
woke up in my dad s old room at my grandparents house, I didn t wake up with the excitement I
thought I would. Instead, I lay in the bed and stared groggily at the ceiling. It was one of those
days when getting out of bed doesn t even feel like an option. I hadn t even remembered about
where we were going. The sound of water running in the bathroom across the hall carried into the
room, and that s when I noticed the strip of light peeking through the crack in the door,
occasionally interrupted by someone walking past. But it was too early in the morning for this
many people to be up. At that moment my mom opened the door and told me that... Show more

With strides long enough to make up for how slowly they stepped their huge feet onto the trail
they followed, they disappeared behind a cluster of trees and reappeared on the other side. Two
white and brown dogs came up from behind the elephants and ran into the water with small
splashes and doggy paddled to the grass on the edge of the water that sat snug against the fence.
Then the elephants stormed in. Waves of water splashed forward as they swam across the water.
They filled their trunks with water and squirted it out onto their backs. Baby elephants even
ducked their heads under water! They started to make their way towards the crowd, and whether
or not we said it out loud, we were all thinking the same thing: were the elephants going to splash
up to us? They then slowed to a stop, treading in one spot. And it was a good thing too, because if
they came any closer we would have been soaked by the mist of green and brown pond water
squirting from the trunk of one of the largest elephants!
The car drove us up to the gates, over seven feet tall, with signs that left the passangers regret
their coming at all. Or that s what I would say if we were in a scene from Jurrassic Park. Which is
what it felt like, driving up to the black gates bearing an old looking sign that warned: All
trespassers will be eaten: We were about to go on the part of African LionSafari that it s really

Treatment of Religion and the Church in Pedro Paramo and...
Christianity has become, in over two millennia, the world s largest religion, spreading to almost
every corner of the world. Based on this fact, it does not come as much of a surprise that Juan
Rulfo s 1955 Mexican novel, Pedro Paramo, and Robertson Davies 1970 Canadian one, Fifth
Business, are both largely affected by this pervasive religion. What is interesting, however, is that
despite the vast differences in culture and time, a comparison can be made of the authors treatment
of Christianityand the church in the books, which both come to similar conclusions.
The first major similarity in the books on this particular subject is that both Rulfo and Davies show
Christianity and the church as being flawed. Father Renteria, the local ... Show more content on

Dempster as well as his family s and church s failure to understand his interests in saints and magic
that force him to realize one flaw of the Christian religion: its inability to capture the entire feeling
of spirituality.
One of the major faults that Rulfo portrays of the Church in Pedro Paramo, is that it fails in its
main responsibility of providing moral standards to the people of Comala. The novel illustrates
characters that have sinned more than any other, yet show little or no guilt. Rulfo s book
contains a careful listing of the cruelties that the Paramos inflicted on the people of Comala:
Rumor has it that your brother was murdered by [Miguel Paramo] and you believe that your
niece Ana was raped by him. 6, Pedro Paramo slaughtered so many folks after his father was
murdered that he killed nearly everybody who attended that wedding. 7 However, despite these
crimes, neither Miguel nor Pedro seems to feel any remorse for their actions. After listening to a
number of women confess to having sinned for either sleeping with Pedro Paramo, or bearing his
children, Father Renteria says, I kept waiting for him to come and confess something, but he never
did. 8 Renteria also refuses to absolve Miguel at first, saying, [he] died without forgiveness. 9
Similarly, in Fifth Business, the character

David Lurie As A Byronic Hero
...we are not asked to condemn this being with the mad heart, this being with whom there is
something constitutionally wrong. On the contrary, we are invited to understand and sympathize.
But there is a limit to sympathy. For though he lives among us, he not one of us (Coetzee, 2000:
33). The afore stated quote from the novel Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee, is used when discussing a
poem by Lord ByronLara in the novel. Yet it is directly applicable to the protagonist, David Lurie.
Coetzee appeals to the readers to not criticise Lurie too harshly for his actions and to find it in
their heart to sympathise with him. Lurie can therefore be viewed as a Byronic hero. In the
following essay David Lurie will be discussed as a Byronic heroas well as... Show more content on

As a result of his bad choices, made even worse by his refusal to admit guilt, he leaves his urban
existence for the rustic countryside. Once there he takes up residence with his daughter Lucy
and even gets a job as an assistant to euthanize dogs at the local animal shelter. The feature of the
Byronic hero that is the capability of deep and strong affection (Beatty, 2008) is seen in Lurie in his
dealings with Lucy. Nevertheless the single most important aspect that makes David a Byronic
hero is the fact that there are so many similarities between the life of Lurie and Lord Byron
himself. Lurie says: I was not myself. I was no longer a fifty year old divorcГ© at a loose end. I
became a servant of Eros (Coetzee, 2000:52). Byron s personality and actions could be seen as
driven by Eros, so Lurie says he is driven by impulse, as already mentioned in this essay.
Lastly one can surely conclude that David Lurie shows all signs of being a Byronic hero, most
definitely a reflection of Lord Byron himself. Lord Byron once wrote; What is the worst of woes
that wait on age? What stamps the wrinkle deeper on the brow? To view each loved one blotted
from life s page, and be alone on earth, as I am now. Similarly Lurie comes to the realisation that
he is now old and should resign himself to a quiet life without a string of young woman to

Impeachments For Senators
The requirements for Senators are an interesting point in the Constitution, and it surprises me that
they remain identical to this day. Each senator serves for six years. It s interesting that each
elected Senator serves for three times as long as a Representative and for two years more than the
President, without re election of course. Senators are required to be five years older than
Representatives, but five years younger than the president, and they are also responsible for the
Impeachment process. It s interesting that Treason requires at least two eye witness to overt
treason, or open admission within court, and the punishment can only be against the person who
committed the crime, and not their associates or family. George Mason,

Chesapeake And New England Colonies Essay
A community is a group of people who work together towards a common goal and share a
common interest. Lack of such a quality can and most likely will cause a struggling town or city to
fall into the extremes of poverty and wealth. The New England community was so strong and so
supportive in comparison to that of the Chesapeake Bay, that it is no wonder they developed into
two distinctly different cultures before the year 1700. The Chesapeake region developed into a land
of plantations and money driven owners, with the elite wealthy, almost no middle class, and those in
poverty creating the population. New England, on the other hand, had developed into a religion
and family based society comprised of mostly middle class families by 1700.... Show more content

The motives that drove the Pilgrims and Puritans away from anything familiar and the trust they
placed in God only proved that they were going to make their life in the new world work, no
matter what. Not everyone in England was facing a harsh persecution; many travelers came to the
New World with high hopes of money, which led to numerous conflicts. It was a land for the rich
to get richer. Most of the settlers bound for Virginiaand the Southern colonies had a get rich or
die trying type of attitude. The only thing tearing them from home was a flimsy promise of gold
that may or may not be there. The motive of such people is so radically different. There were no
pacts of agreement, no common laws that kept them in a community once landing. This led the
men to never develop any sense of belonging with their fellow men, causing a distinct survival
society by 1700. Every man was for himself. It was a bitter game displaying the survival of the
richest.
The travelers from England that headed for the Chesapeake Bay were predominantly men,
which led to an unbalanced society and lack of wives to promote a family based culture. The
passenger list for one boat had a sex ratio of sixty four men to eleven women. Not only was there
a radical imbalance, only four of the men were above forty, while only eight total were above
thirty (Doc. C). That left fifty six young males headed to a new land with only their self

Voting Rights Of The United States Essay
Voting Rights in America Since the creation of the United States of America, providing freedom
and opportunity has shown to be the most essential factor that makes the country a desirable place
to call home. However, certain rights have not been preserved for every citizen in society. In the
aftermath of the recent presidential election, the citizens of this country are beginning to realize
the importance of voicing their opinion and exercising the right to vote. Unfortunately, this
country has yet to fully provide equal opportunity for the people it vowed to protect, especially
when it comes to voting. Voting rights are still clearly under attack in our country and
intentionally impact those who are of color and/or who are disadvantaged as well as women and
those with disabilities. To begin, the history of past voting rights is not one that is pretty. For a
majority of the early electionsin the country, the only citizens that could vote were white, male
property owners. People of color did not receive this right until far into the future. Alexander
Keyssar, the writer of the book, The Right to Vote: The Contested History of Democracy
in the
United States, discusses that rights were well overdue for many Americans. Keyssar states, African
Americans could not vote in the South, Asian immigrants were disenfranchised because they could
not become citizens, and Native Americans lacked the right to vote for more often then they
possessed it (Keyssar xx). Although this seems

Paleolithic Indians
10,000 years ago, Paleolithic Indians inhabited the valley in the area designated by present day
Lewiston and Havana, southwest of Peoria, Illinois. (Guillory, 1990). According to Dan Guillory,
these first inhabitants of Illinois thrived on the fish and game, including species such as bison.
These Indians continuously returned to various sites throughout the Illinois Valley. These
explorations and hunts littered the modern day Illinois valley with artifacts, including fishhooks,
spear points and scraping knives. In this modern day valley known as Fulton county, there are over
3,000 Indian mounds and village sites (Guillory, 1990). While most of the anthropological

Skirmish Board Game Analysis
Recently in class, we paired into groups of two to face off in an ultra realistic simulation as
commanders of either the Americans or British during the American Revolution. By ultra realistic
simulation, I mean board game. Nonetheless, Skirmish the board game, is a representation of what
it was like to command the American troops or British troops. Through this experience, we learned
how realistic it is, several factors that determine the outcome of the game, and about how best to
command your troops. The Skirmish board game is a very realistic depiction of the Revolution in
several ways. During the American Revolution, one of the characteristics of Washington s Army was
its ability to move troops much faster than the British.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Skirmish board game also reflects the advantage George Washington had over the British
thanks to the intelligence gained by American spies. This comes when the British player must
declare which unit they are moving before they move it. This is like how the Americans almost
always knew what the British were planning to do, before they did it. At the same time, the board
game also incorporated the vulnerability of American leaders by using special American unit
pieces with black dots. These pieces, representing the different heads of Washington s Army were
to be protected at all costs, since they would be the determining factor between a win or a loss.
Another example of the realism of the Skirmish board game was the fact that the British army was
made up of five large blocks with the number five (to indicate the number of troops in that block)
on them as opposed to the American units which were sixteen one piece units. This represents how
tight knit the British army was during the American Revolution, as opposed to how split up the
American army was. The Americans were, in an essence, one large army made up of small town
militias. One of the smaller American militias was Daniel Morgan and his mountain men. They are
credited for being some of the best sharpshooters of their

Finally, the last disadvantage of running family business, family members are easier to be lazy.
On the one hand, family members hold shares in company; they believe they would not lose this
company. So it would lack of successful succession. Of course, this situation is not always
happening. But when the stock is decreased, they shirk responsibility to each other. On the other
hand, if the head of the family dies, this situation will be more serious. No one will go to lead

family members. I think this is the biggest disadvantage of running family business.
In conclusion, there are three benefits and disadvantage of running a family business. Even there

English Renaissance Literature
If a literature loving time traveler were to journey into the past to study English Renaissance
literature as compared to the former Anglo Saxon literature, they would find that changing beliefs
and ideas in society are reflected in the writing of the time. The historical context of the English
Renaissance impacts not only the subject matter of poems, but also the underlying themes in the
text. It is important to examine the differences and similarities between each era to understand the
differences in their literature.
Before the glories of the English Renaissance, there existed the turmoil of the Anglo Saxon period.
Before entering this era, a time traveler prepare herself with years of study at a modern university.

Petrarch, a man credited with introducing humanism, preached the idea that one can do secular
work with spiritual value. This was the spark that lit the bonfire of the Renaissance. It took a
while for the Renaissance to spread to the English people, but they were ready for it after all of the
previous religious turmoil brought on by the fickle Henry VII and his Catholic daughter Mary. The
much celebrated Queen Elizabeth ultimately ended up with the throne, and under her, the English
Renaissance blossomed. Great writers like Shakespeare came to the forefront of popular culture
and all was well (mostly). Subject matter of poetry and narratives shifted from man s relationship
with God to man s relationship with himself and his lovers. This reflects the more independent,
curious, and secular views of Renaissance scholars.
Beliefs and values were not the only things that evolved during the English Renaissance. Ever since
William the Conqueror took over in the olden days, elements of French had been weaseling their
way into the English language. This caused Old English to transition into Middle English, which is
much more understandable to modern time travelers. Overall, a time traveler objectively viewing

Louis Pasteur s How To Vaccinate Against Infectious Disease
Louis Pasteur discovered how to vaccinate against infectious disease, but it was a long process
before he got to that point. He first studied the process of fermentation, which is when sugars are
turned into alcohol. When a vinegar manufacturer wanted to know why his vinegar was spoiling,
Pasteur found that it was because yeast (a microscopic fungus) had come in contact with the
juice. He found that by heating the beet juice to a controlled temperature, the yeast was killed,
and the fermentation process was stopped. Today this process is known as pasteurization, and it
is applied to all kinds of food such as milk and cheese. He took what he had learned and
eventually isolated the organism that was causing silk worm eggs to be infected with disease and
developed a method to prevent the eggs from becoming... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This saved the silk industry. Eventually, he applied his knowledge to the medical industry by
asking doctors to sterilize their medical instruments by heating them to prevent the spread of
germs. After two of his children died of typhoid fever, Pasteur wanted to know if there was a way
to protect the body from germs. When an anthrax epidemic broke out among animals, he
discovered that the anthrax bacillus was the carrier of the disease. By using the heating method he
used to kill the yeast in food, Pasteur heated the bacillus enough to weaken it, and then he injected
it into the animals to allow their bodies to build up a resistance against the bacteria. It worked, and
Pasteur eventually developed a vaccine for rabies and other infectious diseases like cholera and
smallpox. Pasteur had many questions that motivated his discoveries. Where are the micro
organisms coming from that cause fermentation? Can the fermentation process be stopped? If
fermentation can be stopped in food, can that same concept be applied to protect the body from
infectious disease? Then there was the motivation initiated through the

The Decolonization Of Mars
A lot can be said about Mars. It was named after the Roman God of War, Mars, for its red color.
One of the biggest topics of conversation regarding Mars is whether or not us humans should be
looking to colonize the Red Planet. I won t be getting into the debate of privatized or public space
programs because in the end they are both working towards a common goal of getting to Mars. The
points I will layout through this essay will be, is Mars habitable, how much money it will cost to
get to Mars, some thoughts from Stephen Petranek and is it an actual solution.
When we get to the topic of habitability on Mars, we have to focus on the main points. Is the
atmosphere able to sustain life? Are we able to grow food to feed animals and ourselves? ... Show

Food, shelter, water, and clothing. This is for Earth, when we get to Mars, we would need
oxygen as well. What has been stated earlier in the essay was having supplies brought to Mars
earlier than our intended arrival, and some of the stuff there could be dry food. In his Ted talk,
he states that about 80% of the food we would eat on Mars would be dry foods, and the other
would be grown gradually over time. Petranek says in his Ted talk that about 15 20% would be
grown from hydroponics. What this means is that plants would grow without soil, because
Martian soil is toxic. It is considered to be toxic because NASA s Curiosity rover found
perchlorates in the Martian ground. We wouldn t be able to grow food easily until there is
running water on the surface, and we found an easier way to make the dirt able to be used for
farming practices. I personally wouldn t enjoy having to eat dried foods for a long time while
living on Mars, but some other people might. I would need the greens and vegetables to thrive for

Competitiveness in the Industry
1. The smartphone business has evolved rapidly over the past few years, and has undergone some
shifts in the type of market model. The three basic model types are monopoly, oligopoly and
monopolistic competition. Another type, perfect competition, does not exist in practice but only in
theory as a means of understanding the extreme. Perhaps in a market where ten vendors are all
selling watermelons to an audience that knows its melons, you could argue that there is perfect
competition, but such markets are few and far between in the West.
In the smartphone industry, the competition is characterized by the operating system that the
devices use. Thus, when n the industry was first evolving out of the personal digital assistant
industry, there were only two main players, the Palm and the Blackberry. Apple entered the market
and brought with it a whole new set of consumers to a product that was initially seen as a tool for
business. Palm s popularity declined, but there were other new entrants ranging from Windows to
other proprietary systems and of course to Android. Now, the smartphone industry had evolved into
a state of monopolistic competition with half a dozen platforms all competing for the hearts and
minds of consumers. However, the industry is once again shifting back to duopoly status, with
RIM being marginalized and Apple and Google being the only two players that matter.
2. In the short run, the trend towards duopoly will continue. The two leading products have

The Global Hotels And Resorts
Leo s Analysis
Our industry, the Global Hotels and Resorts, experienced strong growth over the five years to 2015.
Over the five year period, both consumers and businesses became more confident about their
finances and spent freely on luxuries, including travel. This culminated in a substantial increase in
travel rates and hotel room and occupancy rates, two indicators of a hotel s performance. Travel
spending has also picked up quickly, especially in emerging economies where tourism is on the
rise. Global tourist arrivals are expected to increase an annualized 4.8% over the five years to
2015 to reach 1.2 billion. As a result of these positive trends, industry revenue is expected to
increase an annualized 4.6% over the five years to 2015 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
International tourist arrivals in emerging economy destinations, such as Asia, Latin America,
Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa, will grow at double the pace of destinations in
developed economies. The largest growth will likely be seen in Asia and the Pacific, helping
emerging economies surpass developed economies as the favored destination for tourists by
2015. To keep up with the aggressive rise in travel rates in these regions, more hotels and resorts
will be built, which should increase the proportion of industry revenue generated and drive
industry revenue growth as a whole. Over the five years to 2020, revenue is projected to
increase at an annualized rate of 3.4% to $978.7 billion. In 2016 there will be some new trends
emerging as hotels will have to compete with growing popularity of companies such as Airbnb.
Millennials have shifted the focus from hotel loyalty to more novelty related experiences. The
overarching experience that many of these hotels in the industry are shifting to is updated bars
and lounges that spill into the lobby. Renovation will be on the upswing over the next few years
as guests desire more technology, more stimulating social experiences, and better food and snack
choices. Hotels will be looking to charge more fees and surcharges on amenities as occupancy
rates increase. This goes without saying, demand drives prices, and the hotel industry will be in the
driver s seat in the coming years.

Summary
This case highlights Kimi Ford, a portfolio manager with NorthPoint Group, a mutual fund
management firm. She managed the NorthPoint Large Cap Fund, and in July of 2001, was
looking at the possibility of taking a position in Nike for her fund. Nike stock had declined
significantly over the previous year, and it appeared to be a sound value play. Nike had held an

In order to be more confident in her forecast, she asked her assistant to estimate Nike s cost of
capital.
Nike s Estimated Cost of Capital
Ms. Ford s assistant estimated Nike s cost of capital to be 8.4%. This is based on four main
assumptions. First, a single cost of capital for all of Nike s various business segments will be
sufficient, rather than using a business segment specific cost of capital. Seeing as footwear made
up 62% of revenues, and that all the significant segments were sport related, the assistant felt that
the risk factors were similar for all of the business segments. Next, since Nike was funded through
both debt and equity, the WACC was used to calculate the cost of capital. Third, the cost of debt
was estimated to be 4.3%. This was calculated by taking the interest expense for the entire year of
2001 and dividing it by Nike s average debt balance. Tax adjusted, the cost of debt is 2.7%; this
uses a tax rate of 38% based on a state tax of 3% and the U.S. statutory tax rate. Lastly, the CAPM
was used to estimate the cost of equity. Using the current yield of the 20 year Treasury bond as
the risk free rate, the compound average premium of the market over Treasury bonds as the risk
premium, and the average of Nike s betas from 1996 to 2000 as the beta, Nike s cost of equity was
estimated to be 10.5%.

How similar can two short stories inevitably get? Differences in the short stories are everywhere.
Hence, it would cause some people to think if I were to say that all short stories were similar in
some way. To anyone who has read a few short stories, that statement is absurd. Given these points, I

stories. One short story is, Invitations by Carol Shields, and the other is, Black Walls by Liu Xin

protagonist decided to stay home and read her book instead of going out to any of the invitations.
Inevitably, both author s used similar aspects when composing their stories; the aspect involves the
mysterious man/person found in both short stories. The mysterious person was mentioned
throughout both stories. First was the mysterious person who was sending the invitations for the
same day and same hour. For instance, in the story Invitations, the protagonist said she felt directly

My Life Reflection Paper
Literature and writing have had an affect on my life starting from my early childhood and
continues to influence me as I end my 11th year of school. From children s pop up books to 500
page novels reading has always taken part in developing my life. From learning to write my name
to using vigorous research and planning to construct a 7 page paper over the Scarlet Letterand the
unfortunate events little Hester Prynneis forced to deal with, along with the thrilling task analyzing
two juxtaposed literary works. Throughout my life writingand literature have helped to guide me
in life and aides in my everyday life. In grades kindergarten through seventh I attended school at
Piqua Catholic and more times than not was unsatisfactory in my writing and literature skills. I
always seemed to be the kid that fell behind when reading a book or was constantly spelling
words incorrectly. It was not that I did not care or never did my work, I tried but nothing ever
clicked for me. Tutoring was brought up in chat among my parents but they hoped that it would
click eventually. My mother acted as my own personal tutor at times. In preparation for spelling
tests we would take a cookie sheet and cover it in shaving cream. After my mom gave me a word
I would spell it out in the shaving cream. This helped me to visualize the words while
incorporating some fun into studying. First grade was nightmare for me, My teacher, Mrs.
Quarter had suggested to my parents that I be held back because I was so far behind compared
to the other children in my class. At times we would read together in class, taking turns by going
around the room. It was embarrassing when the book came to me and every other word I would
stumble and need help with pronunciation. Although Mrs. Quarter suggested I be held back a
year that was not what she wanted. At times she would stay after school with me to practice
reading with me which greatly benefited me. With Mrs. Quarters help my reading and writing
greatly improved and by the end of my second grade year I was on honor roll. As I grew older and
transferred to Troy City Schools I felt that my classes had gotten easier, especially English. I
excelled in English, I will credit my English teacher Mrs.

Literature Review
In order to examine whether economic development can be accelerated in low developed countries
it important to define and identify the characteristics of Economic Development. Economic
development is significantly more advanced than economic growth. It is more relevant to
measuring improvements in the quality of life in developing nations. Economic development is
also concerned with literacy rates, life expectancy, poverty rates and structural changes in the
economy.
According to Todaro Smith 2011, Economic Development can be specified into three objectives
of development. The first is Sustaining Goods and Services ; this objective is the increase in
supply of goods and services, which also widens the distribution of basic needs such as food
shelter, health and protection. The second is An Increase in Income ; this objective is to increase
the standard of living, jobs, improved education and better attention to cultural values. All these
factors enhance material well being, individual and national self esteem. The third and final is the
Freedom to Make Economic and Social Choices , this objective is to increase the range of
economic opportunities available to a society.

Carrie s baby was only eight month old when they claimed that she was not a normal baby due to

decrease her chance of having a feebleminded baby (Buck v. Bell, 2006).
Carrie s lawyer Irving Whitehead did not make any justification for Carrie knowing that she was

The Identifying Factors in the Development of Aggression and Violence in Youth Today
Tragic events like the shootings at Columbine High School capture public attention and concern,
but are not typical of youth violence. Most adolescent homicides are committed in inner cities and
outside of school. They most frequently involve an interpersonal dispute and a single victim. On
average, six or seven youths are murdered in this country each day. Most of these are inner city
minority youths. Such acts of violence are tragic and contribute to a climate of fear in schools and
communities.
Research findings are identifying factors in the development of aggressive and antisocial behavior

Successful early adjustment at home increases the likelihood that children will overcome such
individual challenges and not become violent. However, exposure to violent or aggressive behavior
within a family or peer group may influence a child in that direction.
Types and Severity of Antisocial Behavior
The types and severity of antisocial behaviors exhibited by youths vary greatly and include lying,
bullying, truancy, starting fights, vandalism, theft, assault, rape, and homicide. As a rule, the older
the age of onset, the fewer the number of antisocial youths who will engage in seriously aggressive
and violent behavior. Longitudinal studies show that many children who engage in antisocial
behavior in childhood continue to do so at least through adolescence.
Longitudinal research has identified types of youth who progress to adolescent antisocial behavior,
multiple pathways through which it develops and persists, and the multiple factors that shape this
risk. This research has identified two types of life course trajectories: life course persistent, which
is viewed as a form of psycho
pathology, and adolescence limited, which is identified only in select social situations. The
distinction between these two types of individuals is very useful, both as a way of thinking about
developmental knowledge and as a tool for targeting the right interventions for antisocial youth.

individual basis and as a community.
One project I would employ is a campus wide afternoon nap. This may seem like a silly, far
fetched idea; however, taking naps has amazing benefits. This time could greatly benefit all college
students, one of the most sleep deprived group of people. We all have those days when we are
exhausted and everything is annoying so we decide to be grumpy. Students would be less grumpy if
they got more sleep. A positive attitude would resonate from well rested students. Secondly, a
naptime could positively impact student s academic profiles. Students would be apt to stay awake
during lectures and not fall asleep doing their homework. Most importantly, adequate sleep has
been scientifically proven to slow aging, more commonly referred to as getting wrinkles. I life

for. A campus wide nap would improve students mentally, academically, and physically.... Show

As teaching children with ADHD may cause several issues and concerns in the classroom,
developing different teaching methods and strategies to help that student learn is important. Ewing
et. al (2007) conducted a quantitative study on the learning for youth with severe emotional

within their learning that causes risks for the development of severe emotional disorders throughout
life. Therefore, positive effective interventions are introduced to the students to help their emotional
growth over time. Giving the student the opportunity to receive additional help and extra time
through the learning process would help with their disorder (Ewing et. al, 2007).

Anne of Green Gables is an enchanting tale of a young orphan named Anne Shirley. Anne, who
happens to be an eleven year old orphan at the beginning of the story, eventually gets adopted

young male orphan who would be able to assist them with physical work around the house
because Matthew was getting older, and would need an extra hand. Despite having a little girl,
who was useless to them physically, they quickly fell in love with this young girl s goodness and

In the novel we can see that Anne is not so fond of religion. When she gets asked to pray, she
simply does it to satisfy Marilla considering how she believes god gave her red hair on purpose.
This is another similarity found between Anne and L.M. Montgomery. At some point in
Montgomery s journals, she explains how she is against orthodox religion (DuVernet, Sylvia, p.7).
There are so many things that we can relate from the author to Anne s character, it may be
coincidental, but considering how Montgomery used writing as a therapeutic relief, it is quite
evident that some of her traits and beliefs such as the aspect of depression and

loneliness were meant to be poured into the book (Rubio, Writing a life: L.M. Montgomery).
Anne s imagination was certainly one of her greatest attributes. Although her imagination
sometimes led her to trouble, it is in fact what made her so special and successful throughout the
novel. A few times in the story, she would catch herself daydreaming and meanwhile accidentally
being the cause of problems. A good example of this was when she was baking the cake; she
ruined it due to being in her own little world. Another case which is actually worst then the
previously stated incident, is when Anne s imagination nearly causes her to drown while reenacting

The Concepts Of Nature Vs Nurture
The concepts of Nature vs Nurture, are major concepts in social science. Nature is the hereditary
pattern of physical features in a human being s development. These features include, but are not
limited to, our personality, usual and unusual appearances and the general measurements of how
humans hold the attributes of being sociable, hostile behavior, their emotions, and the usage of
alcohol and drugs. On the other hand Nurture is slightly different. Nurture is the influence of the
environment that plays upon the behavior and characteristics in a human. The idea of nurture is
that humans will grow up to form their personality on the way they are raised and life experiences.
Culture is defined by the people in the environment, however, the environment helps shape and
form human personalities in order to forge a culture. Culture is created by religions/beliefs, clothing
/foods, language/social habits as well as the humanistic discipline; such as music, paintings,
literature, and many more. Culture is generated by humankind, because humans hold their belief
systems and patterns that was passed down by generations; by humans passing down what they
have learned from their families this begins to create a culture. Personality plays a central role in
both nature vs nurture and culture. Furthermore, personality is stated the total organization of
inherited and acquired characteristics of an individual as evidenced by the individual s behavior
(Hunt 119). Personality is either

points)
The most notable example of a global human rights regime is the United Nations, and an example
of regional human rights would be the OAS ( Organization of American States). Both entities have
focuses that are quite similar and intersecting. The main goal of the UN is displayed in article 1 of
the UN Charter which states to maintain international peace and security . Primary concerns of the
UN are security, humanitarian assistance, development, and human rights which is recognized in
the Universal Declaration of Rights by the UN. However, before there was the UN declaration
there was the American Declaration on the Rights and Duties of Man .
Despite the similarities both institutions possess there are differences that are apparent in the
utilitarian function of each. The UN has a universal influence and system of play, and the OAS
plays a smaller role looking over only its specific geographical region of the Americas. While both
aim to influence policy and the promotion of human rights there are advantages that come with
their differences. The UN has criticized the need for regional institutions like the OAS where they
believe the OAS role or goals overlap with those of their own. However, the OAS

Descriptive Statistics In Table 2
After conducting an analysis of descriptive statistics, as found in Table I, the results reveal that
$224.6 million dollars (M=$4.16 million, SD=$2.99 million) was spent across the 54 multimedia
rights agreements during the 2015 2016 school year. The smallest financial payout is $375,000 and
belongs to Northern Illinois, while the largest contract $12,358,087 million, belonging to the
Universityof Texas. The disparity among institutions becomes more evident when analyzing the
multimedia rights contracts. Of the $224.6 million dollars spent during the 2015 2016 season,
$182.3 million was spent on institutions who compete in one of the Power 5 conferences, meaning
that the 31 Power 5 institutions in this study receive 81.2% of the... Show more content on

In terms of total spending, IMG is followed by Learfield (sum = $82.3 million), JMI (sum = $11.9
million). It is important to note that JMI is relatively new when it comes to college multimedia
rights contracts, and only has two institution, which is reflected in their low total payout.
However, as illustrated in Table VI, JMI has a higher average payout than the two larger
companies, IMG and Learfield, (M=$5.93 million, SD= $4.7 million). JMI will see an increase
in their average payout during the 2016 2017 as well as during the 2017 2018 seasons with
addition of Clemson who will make $2.6 million to $7.7 million during the respective seasons.
IMG and Learfield are relatively similar in average payouts, with IMG averaging $4.53 million
(SD = $3.52 million) and Learfield averaging $3.74 million (SD= $1.87 million). IMG and
Learfield, both with over 20 contracts a piece have a far greater range of contract sizes, with IMG
controlling both the smallest payout, $375,000, and the largest payout, $12.36 million. The
variables outlined in Table VII were used in an attempt to explain the effect that numerous factors
have on the guaranteed rights fee that a university receives from a third party rights holder. Those
variables were separated into four categories; property related, football performance, basketball
performance, and demand indicators. From there, a Pearson product moment correlation was applied

Essay On Astrocytic Hamartomas
Astrocytic hamartomas are an abnormal proliferation of the macroglial astrocytic cells of the
retinal nerve fiber layer and are considered benign lesions1. They can be located anywhere within
the retina, however are often found at the optic nerve head2. Retinal astrocytic hamartomas are
associated with a variety of diseases, but may also be singular and idiopathic. The age of onset
plays a crucial role in differentiating the lesions and the course of treatment following diagnosis.
Visual symptoms can range from being asymptomatic, to mild visual disturbances, to enucleation in
the worst cases which are associated with systemic conditions. The appearance of astrocytic
hamartomas are comparable to a variety of other lesions associated... Show more content on

Retinal astrocytic hamartomas typically appear in the first or second decade of life5. Their
appearance is often white with a calcified appearance4 that can vary in size, with smaller lesions
typically being less defined and a translucent white color5. Larger nodules may have more
opaque coloring and white nodules in the inner retina; another common description for astrocytic
hamartomas that are larger is white mulberry appearance5. The age of onset and diseases
associated allow prediction of transformation5. Larger lesions with a later onset typically remain
stable, especially if the subject is over 25 years old5. It s expected that if the lesion is recorded at
a young age, it may go under small changes and enlarge5. Retinal astrocytic hamartomas can be a
congenital or acquired finding. It is a common finding with a systemic diseases such as tuberous
sclerosis, retinitis pigmentosa, or neurofibromatosis1. Systemic disorders will typically result in
bilateral and multiple astrocytic hamartomas ,whereas idiopathic findings in a normal person will
often result in unilateral and single lesions1,4. Tuberous sclerosis is a congenital disorder with
common findings of retinal astrocytic hamartomas that are found in 44% to 87% of patients6. It is

Cause And Effects Of The Haiti Earthquake
On January 12th, 2010, the small country of Haiti was hit by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that
devastated the city of Port au Prince and surrounding areas (Haiti earthquake of 2010, 2015). The
30 second disaster was just the beginning of a collection of aftershocks that then struck the country
relentlessly for days (Haitiearthquakeof 2010, 2015). Many areas were reduced to rubble leaving
approximately one million Haitians homeless and 350 000 dead and another 300 000 injured (Haiti
earthquake of 2010, 2015). The ill prepared country was sitting on two tectonic plates the Caribbean
and the North American, where there was slippage resulting in the earthquake (KS3 Bitesize
Geography). Following the environmental catastrophe, the international community responded, and
a relief effort began (Haiti earthquake of 2010, 2015). Though the earthquake happened quickly, the
lasting impact and trauma remained. In an article from the Wall Street Journal, Luhnow and Dugan
stated that following the event many people went searching for psychological support and aid
instead of physical (2010). After having buildings tumble and fall onto people, many suffered from
PTSD and survivors guilt; children were the most emotionally traumatized, and there was a
fundamental lack of aid for facing psychological traumas endured by so many (Luhnow Dugan,
2010). As a society, an increase in crime and violence is on the rise; Haitians had no defined
structure in communities, and most established norms

My Personal Philosophies Of The Classroom
According to the Philosophic Inventory, my two personal educational philosophies are
progressivism and existentialism. These philosophies show that I am likely to try and make a
change within my class and mold my future students to create a positive change in the world. I
will also value the rights of each of my students to believe what they want without fearing
persecution by their classmates or other teachers, regardless of whether I agree with their views.
The results of this assessment were no surprise as they seem to line up with my personal viewpoints
on running a classroom. A progressivist philosophyfocuses on the individuality of each child and the
importance of experimentation and demonstrations in education. In my class, I will be certain to
make my classroom as interactive as possible, with plenty of opportunities to practice concepts
learned in class. Throughout my life, I have been lucky enough to be a student or observer in
many classrooms that have bright colorful decorations and fun interactive portions of the
classroom. This will be a priority for me as I believe that drab boring colors and plain worksheets
make learningmore intimidating and less fun. Having things like reading corners, small computer
labs, and other interactive activities, are fun ways to give students a break from learning while
actually getting them to teach themselves using different resources. By encouraging students to
read and use the computer independently, they will soon

The movie World Trade Center is about the second terrorist attack on the World Trade Center
which occurred September 11, 2001. Over three thousand lives were lost along with first
responders (fire, police, EMS, medical, military, etc.). The two tallest buildings, known as the

The helicopters brought in to survey the area appeared to be lacking in their ability to transfer
information to the ground. Emergency Management Systems personnel were stationed very near
towers but also seemed ill prepared for this type of catastrophe. Had they all been connected and
communicating many lives could have been saved (Jim Dwyer, 2007). A bus load of port
authority police officers (without any rescue equipment) loaded into a van driven by Sergeant
John McLoughlin and headed to the North Tower. Bits and pieces of information were coming in
from friends and relatives. Reports about attacks elsewhere were unclear such as one which
indicated a missile had hit the Pentagon and Israel had been nuked off the planet. For all they
knew, the site could have been radioactive.
Sadly, those who died never realized that Israel was not involved and that the Pentagon had also
been struck by a plane, and other flights were involved. The attack on the World Trade Center
affected many other cities than just New York. Israel and other countries have prepared their
citizens, military and rescue workers with safe houses, masks and other ways to protect in case of a
nuclear attack. Step 4 Equip personnel and country with nuclear fall out protection training.

“When Your Conscience Says Law Is Immoral, Don T Follow
When your conscience says law is immoral, don t follow it. (Washington v. Glucksberg, n.d) This
line, originally from Jack Kevorkian seems to resonate deeply with the proponents of legalizing
marijuana use, despite it originally referring to assisted suicide. The legalization of marijuana
use had become one of the biggest hot button issues of the last decade, and is being fiercely
debated across the United States. First made illegal in 1970 with the passing of the Controlled
Substances Act, which declared it an addictive drug with no medical value, many are now fighting
against this law, citing medicinal uses and an apparent lack of fierce addictiveness. Since 1996, 23
states have passed laws allowing for medicinal use of marijuana,... Show more content on

The other side of pro legalization are those who seek full legalization of the drug for recreational,
as well as medical, usage. Recreational marijuana should be understood as marijuana that has not
been recommended for use by a medical professional, and is used solely for the psychoactive
properties that it contains. But is the morality between these two camps really any different? Is
using marijuana for the medicinal purpose alone any different, when looking at it from an ethical
standpoint, then using it for enjoyment? By examining this issue through several different ethical
theories, it becomes clear that there is a distinct difference in the morality between medical and
recreational use. Medical use of marijuana is moral. In some cases, it allows users to live a
relatively normal life, while in other cases it gives users a reduction in pain as they approach the
end of their lives. However, recreational use of marijuana is not moral. Unrestricted use for no
medical reason can be destructive and addicting, despite the momentary pleasure it may bring to the
user. Pleasure is the basis for one of the main ethical theories, hedonism. As one of the simplest
ethical theories, it is probably the best place to begin our examination.
Hedonism is one of the oldest of philosophical theories, dating back to the ancient Greeks. As
Schafer Landau (2015) explained, Epicurus (341 270 BCE), the first great hedonist, argued that
pleasure was the only thing

Exploring The Kangaroo Excretory System
The excretory system is the system of an organism that made up of several organs to discharge
wastes from body (New Health Advisor, n.d.) and regulate the composition and concentration of
internal body fluids (Shmoop University, n.d.). Kangaroo has a similar excretory system with most
of the mammals and adapt to minimize water loss as they remove waste products especially their
habitat is dry environment. Skin, lungs and kidneyare the primary excretory system organs while
liver, gallbladder, urinary bladder, ureter and urethra are accessary excretory system organs (New
Health Advisor, n.d.).
The skin keeps the water in and prevents evaporation (Muller, n.d.). The sweat glands carry out the
excretory function by producing sweat that comprises of salt, oils, water, and other unnecessary

The liver is the main metabolic site that is crucial for detoxification. Biochemical processes can
produce toxic byproducts as metabolic wastes and these wastes must be removed (Farabee,
2001). For example, byproduct of protein metabolism is ammonia that has to be converted into a
less toxic compound which is urea for excretion (Muller, n.d.). Then, urea is filtered and excreted
by the kidneys as urine. Gallbladder is the storage of bile produced by liver to breakdown fats,
ethanol and other acidic wastes (New Health Advisor,

Dawit IsaskВґs Daughter Fight for Fairness Essay
After 12 years of Dawit Isaak s indefinite detention, his daughter Betlehem decided that enough is
enough. Betlehem was tired of the Swedish politicians who said that they were gonna help Isaak
but yet didn t do anything besides saying that they would. She also was tired of the Eritrean
government who had imprisoned Isaak without a trial. Betlehem was furious, she came to the
conclusion that nobody was gonna do shit for her and her family.
The only option left was to take the matter in her own hands. Betlehem was by this time only 20
years old but she was determined to get her dad out of prison or at least get him a fair trial.

The petition got 131,274 signatures and Bodström was forced to take this seriously, but as
expected he didn t do much. As previous Prime Ministers he didn t even visit Eritrea to meet with
the Eritrean government, all he did was to publicly speak about Dawit Isaak and that it s
horrible that a man can lose all his basic human rights for no apparent reason. His speech got
standing ovations from the 12,000 people who had come to Medborgarplatsen in Stockholm. But
besides a scripted speech that was made for Bodström to look good, nothing new happened
regarding Isaaks situation in Eritrea. Nobody even knew if he was alive anymore. There were
rumors surrounding that Isaak may have been beaten to death but Betlehem didn t listen to those
rumors. She knew deep down that her dad was a strong man and would survive.
Even though Betlehem and Jacob had got a little family of their own with 2 wonderful kids, the
hole after her dad was still huge. The 2 kids who were 4 and 2 years old had often wondered
where their grandfather was. This put a lot of pressure on Betlehem and Jacob, what was they
supposed to tell them? That a corrupt government had imprisoned their grandfather without giving
him a trial and that he was in solitary confinement? They stuck to the story that Dawit Isaak was on

Essay On Myasthenia Gravis
Myasthenia Gravis Damage to the neuromuscular junctions is due to an autoimmune disease called
myasthenia graves. The motor end plates, which are located on skeletal muscles, are affected
because there is a decrease in the amount of Ach receptors located on the motor end plate, which is
connected to the neuromuscular junction. The decrease is due to the unnecessary production of
antibodies, which bind to the motor end plate. This prevents Ach from binding to the receptors to
carry out a synapse between the skeletal muscleand a neuron, leading to a stop or weakening of
muscle contraction. The decrease in the amounts of synapses cause the skeletal muscle to lose
function, become weaker, and tire more easily. Men and women are both at risk for developing
myasthenia gravis, but the disease is more prevalent in women. However, the age of diagnosis
varies. Men typically receive their diagnosis between the ages of 50 and 60 years old; women are
usually diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40 years old. There is no known research to conclude
if a particular race is at a higher disadvantage to having... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

levels of Ach in the body to bind to functional receptors to increase the amount of synapses.
Corticosteroids and immunosuppresants are other drugs that can be used to suppress the immune
system s attack on the motor end plates. To stop developing tumors on their thymus, patients might
opt to have their thymus removed by a procedure called a thymectomy. Another procedure that can
be done is a plasmapheresis, which reduces the number of antibodies in the blood so there are more
open receptors for Ach to bind to. However, it is important to know that treatment varies from
patient to patient and no patient is the same with this

Alcatraz as a Tourist Attraction Essay
It s 1934, prohibition is the law, and organized crime is booming. You ve been convicted of tax

dollars stuffed in the hollow handle of your tennis racket, and a warden in your pocket, you ve
been living lifelike a king. But all that s about to come to and end, you find yourself standing on
Pier 41, Fisherman s Warf, San Francisco bay. It s early morning and the fog obscures your
view. As it starts to lift and recede into the ocean, it takes along with it all forms of courage and
hope that still remain within you. All that s left is the view before you, twenty two acres of solid
granite surrounded by a fast moving sea of icy waters.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The weather on the island is cold and windy most to the time, and, with exception to the other
tourist, the feeling you get while there is one of bitterness and despair. So how has this island
managed to survive this long? It has survived through the interest of the people that do not inhabit
it. It has survived because of tourism.
So how has Alcatraz transformed from one of the most feared prisons of its time, to one of San
Francisco s most popular tourist attractions? I feel this question demands an answer because no
other prison in U.S. history has ever been so popular for so many different reasons. It started as a
U.S. Army fort, then became a high security prison, was then the inspiration to the Indian
Movement, and ended its career to this day as a popular tourist attraction. I feel that the fears and
stories that have escaped from the island during the time it was a federal prison, have heightened
people s curiosity about what it was like to be a prisoner of The Rock. Each day more and more
people venture to Pier 41, they buy their ticket aboard the Old Blue, and start their adventure to the
island of the unknown. Experience the infamous Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary (Blue Gold Fleet,
2001). This is one of the many advertisements the Blue Gold Fleet offer to tourist in hopes of
attracting business. And after waiting in line for over an hour just to get tickets, I don t think they

  • 3. Ww1 Austria-Hungary Research Paper This essay will attempt to answer the question To what extent is Austria Hungary at fault for causing the start of World War One? This topic is significant due to the ongoing debate about how WWI started and because of the debt some countries only recently, have paid off. In 1914, the country to declare the first war was Austria Hungary s(AH) declaration of war on Serbia. Following this was Serbia s ally, Russia, who mobilized its troops in preparation, and Germany soon after declaring war on the russians. As the snowball effect came into place, countries such as France, the United Kingdom and Belgium followed in declaring different wars amongst each other. This resulted in the start of World War I . It began in 1914 one of the greatest wars in all of history, ending almost five years after in November of 1918. The causes of WWI, will continuously spark debates between people, as there were so many countries involved. This essay will argue that Austria Hungary is mostly to blame for inducing the beginning of the First World War. Evidence of this appears when looking at crises such as... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus, Austria s imperialistic aims had become to diminish Serbia s power for the benefit of expanding their own empire. An example of how they went about this was the Balkan Crisis. The Balkan Crisis involved countries that wanted to increase their size into more land area. An issue that Austria Hungary dealt with was that as they expanded the empire struggled with keeping the different ethnic groups together. A way of distracting from these internal conflicts, was to go to war. The imperialistic ideas of Austria Hungary contributed to their declaration of war because of their fight for pride. For the longest time, Austria Hungary and Serbia fought over land and power. For this reason, Austria Hungary was quick to declare war on Serbia to finally settle the debate of ... • 4. My Experience At The Niagara Falls We had never been out of the country before, and we couldn t wait for the first time. The day I woke up in my dad s old room at my grandparents house, I didn t wake up with the excitement I thought I would. Instead, I lay in the bed and stared groggily at the ceiling. It was one of those days when getting out of bed doesn t even feel like an option. I hadn t even remembered about where we were going. The sound of water running in the bathroom across the hall carried into the room, and that s when I noticed the strip of light peeking through the crack in the door, occasionally interrupted by someone walking past. But it was too early in the morning for this many people to be up. At that moment my mom opened the door and told me that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With strides long enough to make up for how slowly they stepped their huge feet onto the trail they followed, they disappeared behind a cluster of trees and reappeared on the other side. Two white and brown dogs came up from behind the elephants and ran into the water with small splashes and doggy paddled to the grass on the edge of the water that sat snug against the fence. Then the elephants stormed in. Waves of water splashed forward as they swam across the water. They filled their trunks with water and squirted it out onto their backs. Baby elephants even ducked their heads under water! They started to make their way towards the crowd, and whether or not we said it out loud, we were all thinking the same thing: were the elephants going to splash up to us? They then slowed to a stop, treading in one spot. And it was a good thing too, because if they came any closer we would have been soaked by the mist of green and brown pond water squirting from the trunk of one of the largest elephants! The car drove us up to the gates, over seven feet tall, with signs that left the passangers regret their coming at all. Or that s what I would say if we were in a scene from Jurrassic Park. Which is what it felt like, driving up to the black gates bearing an old looking sign that warned: All trespassers will be eaten: We were about to go on the part of African LionSafari that it s really known for. • 5. Treatment of Religion and the Church in Pedro Paramo and... Christianity has become, in over two millennia, the world s largest religion, spreading to almost every corner of the world. Based on this fact, it does not come as much of a surprise that Juan Rulfo s 1955 Mexican novel, Pedro Paramo, and Robertson Davies 1970 Canadian one, Fifth Business, are both largely affected by this pervasive religion. What is interesting, however, is that despite the vast differences in culture and time, a comparison can be made of the authors treatment of Christianityand the church in the books, which both come to similar conclusions. The first major similarity in the books on this particular subject is that both Rulfo and Davies show Christianity and the church as being flawed. Father Renteria, the local ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dempster as well as his family s and church s failure to understand his interests in saints and magic that force him to realize one flaw of the Christian religion: its inability to capture the entire feeling of spirituality. One of the major faults that Rulfo portrays of the Church in Pedro Paramo, is that it fails in its main responsibility of providing moral standards to the people of Comala. The novel illustrates characters that have sinned more than any other, yet show little or no guilt. Rulfo s book contains a careful listing of the cruelties that the Paramos inflicted on the people of Comala: Rumor has it that your brother was murdered by [Miguel Paramo] and you believe that your niece Ana was raped by him. 6, Pedro Paramo slaughtered so many folks after his father was murdered that he killed nearly everybody who attended that wedding. 7 However, despite these crimes, neither Miguel nor Pedro seems to feel any remorse for their actions. After listening to a number of women confess to having sinned for either sleeping with Pedro Paramo, or bearing his children, Father Renteria says, I kept waiting for him to come and confess something, but he never did. 8 Renteria also refuses to absolve Miguel at first, saying, [he] died without forgiveness. 9 Similarly, in Fifth Business, the character ... • 6. David Lurie As A Byronic Hero ...we are not asked to condemn this being with the mad heart, this being with whom there is something constitutionally wrong. On the contrary, we are invited to understand and sympathize. But there is a limit to sympathy. For though he lives among us, he not one of us (Coetzee, 2000: 33). The afore stated quote from the novel Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee, is used when discussing a poem by Lord ByronLara in the novel. Yet it is directly applicable to the protagonist, David Lurie. Coetzee appeals to the readers to not criticise Lurie too harshly for his actions and to find it in their heart to sympathise with him. Lurie can therefore be viewed as a Byronic hero. In the following essay David Lurie will be discussed as a Byronic heroas well as... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a result of his bad choices, made even worse by his refusal to admit guilt, he leaves his urban existence for the rustic countryside. Once there he takes up residence with his daughter Lucy and even gets a job as an assistant to euthanize dogs at the local animal shelter. The feature of the Byronic hero that is the capability of deep and strong affection (Beatty, 2008) is seen in Lurie in his dealings with Lucy. Nevertheless the single most important aspect that makes David a Byronic hero is the fact that there are so many similarities between the life of Lurie and Lord Byron himself. Lurie says: I was not myself. I was no longer a fifty year old divorcГ© at a loose end. I became a servant of Eros (Coetzee, 2000:52). Byron s personality and actions could be seen as driven by Eros, so Lurie says he is driven by impulse, as already mentioned in this essay. Lastly one can surely conclude that David Lurie shows all signs of being a Byronic hero, most definitely a reflection of Lord Byron himself. Lord Byron once wrote; What is the worst of woes that wait on age? What stamps the wrinkle deeper on the brow? To view each loved one blotted from life s page, and be alone on earth, as I am now. Similarly Lurie comes to the realisation that he is now old and should resign himself to a quiet life without a string of young woman to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Impeachments For Senators The requirements for Senators are an interesting point in the Constitution, and it surprises me that they remain identical to this day. Each senator serves for six years. It s interesting that each elected Senator serves for three times as long as a Representative and for two years more than the President, without re election of course. Senators are required to be five years older than Representatives, but five years younger than the president, and they are also responsible for the Impeachment process. It s interesting that Treason requires at least two eye witness to overt treason, or open admission within court, and the punishment can only be against the person who committed the crime, and not their associates or family. • 8. Chesapeake And New England Colonies Essay A community is a group of people who work together towards a common goal and share a common interest. Lack of such a quality can and most likely will cause a struggling town or city to fall into the extremes of poverty and wealth. The New England community was so strong and so supportive in comparison to that of the Chesapeake Bay, that it is no wonder they developed into two distinctly different cultures before the year 1700. The Chesapeake region developed into a land of plantations and money driven owners, with the elite wealthy, almost no middle class, and those in poverty creating the population. New England, on the other hand, had developed into a religion and family based society comprised of mostly middle class families by 1700.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The motives that drove the Pilgrims and Puritans away from anything familiar and the trust they placed in God only proved that they were going to make their life in the new world work, no matter what. Not everyone in England was facing a harsh persecution; many travelers came to the New World with high hopes of money, which led to numerous conflicts. It was a land for the rich to get richer. Most of the settlers bound for Virginiaand the Southern colonies had a get rich or die trying type of attitude. The only thing tearing them from home was a flimsy promise of gold that may or may not be there. The motive of such people is so radically different. There were no pacts of agreement, no common laws that kept them in a community once landing. This led the men to never develop any sense of belonging with their fellow men, causing a distinct survival society by 1700. Every man was for himself. It was a bitter game displaying the survival of the richest. The travelers from England that headed for the Chesapeake Bay were predominantly men, which led to an unbalanced society and lack of wives to promote a family based culture. The passenger list for one boat had a sex ratio of sixty four men to eleven women. Not only was there a radical imbalance, only four of the men were above forty, while only eight total were above thirty (Doc. C). That left fifty six young males headed to a new land with only their self government of a House ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Voting Rights Of The United States Essay Voting Rights in America Since the creation of the United States of America, providing freedom and opportunity has shown to be the most essential factor that makes the country a desirable place to call home. However, certain rights have not been preserved for every citizen in society. In the aftermath of the recent presidential election, the citizens of this country are beginning to realize the importance of voicing their opinion and exercising the right to vote. Unfortunately, this country has yet to fully provide equal opportunity for the people it vowed to protect, especially when it comes to voting. Voting rights are still clearly under attack in our country and intentionally impact those who are of color and/or who are disadvantaged as well as women and those with disabilities. To begin, the history of past voting rights is not one that is pretty. For a majority of the early electionsin the country, the only citizens that could vote were white, male property owners. People of color did not receive this right until far into the future. Alexander Keyssar, the writer of the book, The Right to Vote: The Contested History of Democracy in the United States, discusses that rights were well overdue for many Americans. Keyssar states, African Americans could not vote in the South, Asian immigrants were disenfranchised because they could not become citizens, and Native Americans lacked the right to vote for more often then they possessed it (Keyssar xx). According to Dan Guillory, these first inhabitants of Illinois thrived on the fish and game, including species such as bison. These Indians continuously returned to various sites throughout the Illinois Valley. These explorations and hunts littered the modern day Illinois valley with artifacts, including fishhooks, spear points and scraping knives. By ultra realistic simulation, I mean board game. Nonetheless, Skirmish the board game, is a representation of what it was like to command the American troops or British troops. Through this experience, we learned how realistic it is, several factors that determine the outcome of the game, and about how best to command your troops. The Skirmish board game is a very realistic depiction of the Revolution in several ways. The Skirmish board game also reflects the advantage George Washington had over the British thanks to the intelligence gained by American spies. This comes when the British player must declare which unit they are moving before they move it. This is like how the Americans almost always knew what the British were planning to do, before they did it. At the same time, the board game also incorporated the vulnerability of American leaders by using special American unit pieces with black dots. These pieces, representing the different heads of Washington s Army were to be protected at all costs, since they would be the determining factor between a win or a loss. Another example of the realism of the Skirmish board game was the fact that the British army was made up of five large blocks with the number five (to indicate the number of troops in that block) on them as opposed to the American units which were sixteen one piece units. This represents how tight knit the British army was during the American Revolution, as opposed to how split up the American army was. He first studied the process of fermentation, which is when sugars are turned into alcohol. When a vinegar manufacturer wanted to know why his vinegar was spoiling, Pasteur found that it was because yeast (a microscopic fungus) had come in contact with the juice. He found that by heating the beet juice to a controlled temperature, the yeast was killed, and the fermentation process was stopped. When an anthrax epidemic broke out among animals, he discovered that the anthrax bacillus was the carrier of the disease. The three basic model types are monopoly, oligopoly and monopolistic competition. Another type, perfect competition, does not exist in practice but only in theory as a means of understanding the extreme. Perhaps in a market where ten vendors are all selling watermelons to an audience that knows its melons, you could argue that there is perfect competition, but such markets are few and far between in the West. In the smartphone industry, the competition is characterized by the operating system that the devices use. First, a single cost of capital for all of Nike s various business segments will be sufficient, rather than using a business segment specific cost of capital. Seeing as footwear made up 62% of revenues, and that all the significant segments were sport related, the assistant felt that the risk factors were similar for all of the business segments. Next, since Nike was funded through both debt and equity, the WACC was used to calculate the cost of capital. Third, the cost of debt was estimated to be 4.3%. This was calculated by taking the interest expense for the entire year of 2001 and dividing it by Nike s average debt balance. Tax adjusted, the cost of debt is 2.7%; this uses a tax rate of 38% based on a state tax of 3% and the U.S. statutory tax rate. Lastly, the CAPM was used to estimate the cost of equity. Using the current yield of the 20 year Treasury bond as the risk free rate, the compound average premium of the market over Treasury bonds as the risk premium, and the average of Nike s betas from 1996 to 2000 as the beta, Nike s cost of equity was estimated to be 10.5%. Economic development is also concerned with literacy rates, life expectancy, poverty rates and structural changes in the economy. According to Todaro Smith 2011, Economic Development can be specified into three objectives of development. The first is Sustaining Goods and Services ; this objective is the increase in supply of goods and services, which also widens the distribution of basic needs such as food shelter, health and protection. The second is An Increase in Income ; this objective is to increase the standard of living, jobs, improved education and better attention to cultural values. All these factors enhance material well being, individual and national self esteem. The third and final is the Freedom to Make Economic and Social Choices , this objective is to increase the range of economic opportunities available to a society. There has been Dispute on the most reliable way to measure Economic development. In this paper the measurement of Economic Development is the Human Development index (HDI), which is ... Even though he would have the chance to represent Carrie in the higher courts, he would be on Dr. Priddy s and Aubrey Strode side because he sees the same effects as them. They fought to request the case through many courts expecting to get all the support that they can for the sterilization law (Buck v. Bell, 2006). Later the Circuit Court had supported the law and filed for the sterilization of Carrie. In 1925 Carrie s lawyer Irving Whitehead supported the decision of the Circuit Court at the Supreme Court of Appeals of the State of Virginia. So after all of this Dr. Priddy had passed away in which Dr. J.H. Bell had replaced him at the Colony. The case now became Buck v. The Identifying Factors in the Development of Aggression and Violence in Youth Today Tragic events like the shootings at Columbine High School capture public attention and concern, but are not typical of youth violence. Most adolescent homicides are committed in inner cities and outside of school. They most frequently involve an interpersonal dispute and a single victim. On average, six or seven youths are murdered in this country each day. Most of these are inner city minority youths. Such acts of violence are tragic and contribute to a climate of fear in schools and communities. Successful early adjustment at home increases the likelihood that children will overcome such individual challenges and not become violent. However, exposure to violent or aggressive behavior within a family or peer group may influence a child in that direction. Types and Severity of Antisocial Behavior The types and severity of antisocial behaviors exhibited by youths vary greatly and include lying, bullying, truancy, starting fights, vandalism, theft, assault, rape, and homicide. As a rule, the older the age of onset, the fewer the number of antisocial youths who will engage in seriously aggressive and violent behavior. Longitudinal studies show that many children who engage in antisocial behavior in childhood continue to do so at least through adolescence. Longitudinal research has identified types of youth who progress to adolescent antisocial behavior, multiple pathways through which it develops and persists, and the multiple factors that shape this risk. This research has identified two types of life course trajectories: life course persistent, which is viewed as a form of psycho pathology, and adolescence limited, which is identified only in select social situations. The distinction between these two types of individuals is very useful, both as a way of thinking about developmental knowledge and as a tool for targeting the right interventions for antisocial youth. I hope to spend many years at the University including receiving my bachelor s degree and attending law school. The following ideas would supplement the University of Florida environment on an individual basis and as a community. One project I would employ is a campus wide afternoon nap. This may seem like a silly, far fetched idea; however, taking naps has amazing benefits. This time could greatly benefit all college students, one of the most sleep deprived group of people. We all have those days when we are exhausted and everything is annoying so we decide to be grumpy. Students would be less grumpy if they got more sleep. A positive attitude would resonate from well rested students. Secondly, a naptime could positively impact student s academic profiles. Students would be apt to stay awake during lectures and not fall asleep doing their homework. Most importantly, adequate sleep has been scientifically proven to slow aging, more commonly referred to as getting wrinkles. I life goal I have set for myself is to, if at all possible, age gracefully. This is a cause I strongly advocate for. The Pros And Cons Of Qualitative Research On behalf of the research, a qualitative study is an exploratory research that consist of reasons, ideas and opinions to generate a potential research question. The common methods of the research are group discussions, interviews, and observations to help conduct a reasonable hypothesis (Frost, 2011). In regard to the topic, a qualitative study will be examined based on the sampling strategies, design of the research, and the findings within the data. As teaching children with ADHD may cause several issues and concerns in the classroom, developing different teaching methods and strategies to help that student learn is important. Ewing et. al (2007) conducted a quantitative study on the learning for youth with severe emotional disorders such as ADHD (Ewing et. al, 2007). Children with learning disabilities, conduct problems within their learning that causes risks for the development of severe emotional disorders throughout life. Therefore, positive effective interventions are introduced to the students to help their emotional growth over time. Giving the student the opportunity to receive additional help and extra time through the learning process would help with their disorder (Ewing et. al, 2007). Matthew and Marilla were simply looking for a young male orphan who would be able to assist them with physical work around the house because Matthew was getting older, and would need an extra hand. In the novel we can see that Anne is not so fond of religion. When she gets asked to pray, she simply does it to satisfy Marilla considering how she believes god gave her red hair on purpose. This is another similarity found between Anne and L.M. Montgomery. At some point in Montgomery s journals, she explains how she is against orthodox religion (DuVernet, Sylvia, p.7). There are so many things that we can relate from the author to Anne s character, it may be coincidental, but considering how Montgomery used writing as a therapeutic relief, it is quite evident that some of her traits and beliefs such as the aspect of depression and Hurtubise 4 loneliness were meant to be poured into the book (Rubio, Writing a life: L.M. Montgomery). Anne s imagination was certainly one of her greatest attributes. Although her imagination sometimes led her to trouble, it is in fact what made her so special and successful throughout the novel. A few times in the story, she would catch herself daydreaming and meanwhile accidentally being the cause of problems. A good example of this was when she was baking the cake; she ruined it due to being in her own little world. • 37. The Concepts Of Nature Vs Nurture The concepts of Nature vs Nurture, are major concepts in social science. Nature is the hereditary pattern of physical features in a human being s development. These features include, but are not limited to, our personality, usual and unusual appearances and the general measurements of how humans hold the attributes of being sociable, hostile behavior, their emotions, and the usage of alcohol and drugs. On the other hand Nurture is slightly different. Nurture is the influence of the environment that plays upon the behavior and characteristics in a human. The idea of nurture is that humans will grow up to form their personality on the way they are raised and life experiences. Culture is defined by the people in the environment, however, the environment helps shape and form human personalities in order to forge a culture. Culture is created by religions/beliefs, clothing /foods, language/social habits as well as the humanistic discipline; such as music, paintings, literature, and many more. Culture is generated by humankind, because humans hold their belief systems and patterns that was passed down by generations; by humans passing down what they have learned from their families this begins to create a culture. Personality plays a central role in both nature vs nurture and culture. Furthermore, personality is stated the total organization of inherited and acquired characteristics of an individual as evidenced by the individual s behavior (Hunt 119). Personality is either ... Include one example of a regional human rights regime (write at least 1 page double spaced)(5 points) The most notable example of a global human rights regime is the United Nations, and an example of regional human rights would be the OAS ( Organization of American States). Both entities have focuses that are quite similar and intersecting. The main goal of the UN is displayed in article 1 of the UN Charter which states to maintain international peace and security . Primary concerns of the UN are security, humanitarian assistance, development, and human rights which is recognized in the Universal Declaration of Rights by the UN. However, before there was the UN declaration there was the American Declaration on the Rights and Duties of Man . Despite the similarities both institutions possess there are differences that are apparent in the utilitarian function of each. The UN has a universal influence and system of play, and the OAS plays a smaller role looking over only its specific geographical region of the Americas. While both aim to influence policy and the promotion of human rights there are advantages that come with their differences. The legalization of marijuana use had become one of the biggest hot button issues of the last decade, and is being fiercely debated across the United States. First made illegal in 1970 with the passing of the Controlled Substances Act, which declared it an addictive drug with no medical value, many are now fighting against this law, citing medicinal uses and an apparent lack of fierce addictiveness. The other side of pro legalization are those who seek full legalization of the drug for recreational, as well as medical, usage. Recreational marijuana should be understood as marijuana that has not been recommended for use by a medical professional, and is used solely for the psychoactive properties that it contains. But is the morality between these two camps really any different? Is using marijuana for the medicinal purpose alone any different, when looking at it from an ethical standpoint, then using it for enjoyment? By examining this issue through several different ethical theories, it becomes clear that there is a distinct difference in the morality between medical and recreational use. Medical use of marijuana is moral. In some cases, it allows users to live a relatively normal life, while in other cases it gives users a reduction in pain as they approach the end of their lives. However, recreational use of marijuana is not moral. Unrestricted use for no medical reason can be destructive and addicting, despite the momentary pleasure it may bring to the user. • 50. Essay On Myasthenia Gravis Myasthenia Gravis Damage to the neuromuscular junctions is due to an autoimmune disease called myasthenia graves. The motor end plates, which are located on skeletal muscles, are affected because there is a decrease in the amount of Ach receptors located on the motor end plate, which is connected to the neuromuscular junction. The decrease is due to the unnecessary production of antibodies, which bind to the motor end plate. This prevents Ach from binding to the receptors to carry out a synapse between the skeletal muscleand a neuron, leading to a stop or weakening of muscle contraction. The decrease in the amounts of synapses cause the skeletal muscle to lose function, become weaker, and tire more easily. Men and women are both at risk for developing myasthenia gravis, but the disease is more prevalent in women. However, the age of diagnosis varies. Men typically receive their diagnosis between the ages of 50 and 60 years old; women are usually diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40 years old. There is no known research to conclude if a particular race is at a higher disadvantage to having... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One type of drug class are anticholinesterase, which inhibits acetylcholine in order to increase the levels of Ach in the body to bind to functional receptors to increase the amount of synapses. Corticosteroids and immunosuppresants are other drugs that can be used to suppress the immune system s attack on the motor end plates. To stop developing tumors on their thymus, patients might opt to have their thymus removed by a procedure called a thymectomy. Another procedure that can be done is a plasmapheresis, which reduces the number of antibodies in the blood so there are more open receptors for Ach to bind to. However, it is important to know that treatment varies from patient to patient and no patient is the same with this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 51. Alcatraz as a Tourist Attraction Essay It s 1934, prohibition is the law, and organized crime is booming. You ve been convicted of tax evasion and have spent the last couple years at the Atlanta U.S. Penitentiary. With several thousand dollars stuffed in the hollow handle of your tennis racket, and a warden in your pocket, you ve been living lifelike a king. But all that s about to come to and end, you find yourself standing on Pier 41, Fisherman s Warf, San Francisco bay. It s early morning and the fog obscures your view. As it starts to lift and recede into the ocean, it takes along with it all forms of courage and hope that still remain within you. All that s left is the view before you, twenty two acres of solid granite surrounded by a fast moving sea of icy waters.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The weather on the island is cold and windy most to the time, and, with exception to the other tourist, the feeling you get while there is one of bitterness and despair. So how has this island managed to survive this long? It has survived through the interest of the people that do not inhabit it. It has survived because of tourism. So how has Alcatraz transformed from one of the most feared prisons of its time, to one of San Francisco s most popular tourist attractions? I feel this question demands an answer because no other prison in U.S. history has ever been so popular for so many different reasons. It started as a U.S. Army fort, then became a high security prison, was then the inspiration to the Indian Movement, and ended its career to this day as a popular tourist attraction. I feel that the fears and stories that have escaped from the island during the time it was a federal prison, have heightened people s curiosity about what it was like to be a prisoner of The Rock. Each day more and more people venture to Pier 41, they buy their ticket aboard the Old Blue, and start their adventure to the island of the unknown. Experience the infamous Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary (Blue Gold Fleet, 2001). This is one of the many advertisements the Blue Gold Fleet offer to tourist in hopes of attracting business. And after waiting in line for over an hour just to get tickets, I don t think they need to worry about ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
