2. Noah Webster Essay
Noah Webster
Noah Webster, familiar to most Americans as the writer of the first American dictionary, worked as a
schoolteacher in the late eighteenth century. As he taught, he came to realize that there were some
major problems with the way English was taught in the American schools. The United States of
America had recently declared its independence from England, and was struggling to form its own
identity. The schools were still using textbooks from England, and these books varied in consistency
when it came to spelling, pronunciation and grammar (Short Summary Website). As a teacher, and as a
patriot, Webster felt a need for an American textbook. He wanted consistency and he wanted it to
reflect that there was an American ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although it did not cover a great deal, it laid the foundation for his later dictionaries. It included
distinctly American spellings of words and pronunciations. It also supported Webster s belief in
democracy. By seeking to standardize the learning of language in American classrooms, he was
putting into play a belief that the semantics of a language play a key role in a person s power to create
a system of ideas, thus creating a more educated citizen able to participate in a democratic system
(Noah Webster s American Dictionary Website).
This book was revolutionary not only because it sought to Americanize the classroom, but because of
the tone of the book. Most previous grammars were prescriptive, meaning that they informed the
student how the words should be spoken or spelled. The Blue Backed Speller, on the other hand, was a
descriptive work, meaning that it merely showed how words were actually used and pronounced by
real speakers of the language (Millward 245).
Although the blue backed speller was a great success, it merely provided Webster with a paycheck that
enabled him to compile what would be his greatest work: a complete dictionary of the English
language that was tailored to the speakers of the United States. Webster wanted a dictionary that was
not only easy to use, but wished it to follow the descriptive philosophy that he had begun with his
speller. As a result, he streamlined the spellings of many words (Brett Website),

3. Coral Reef Pollution
The ocean full of life and undiscovered wonders is changing from a diverse biom(define)e to a
polluted landscape(change). These changes can be seen through the coral reefs that reside mostly on
shores. Through the window provided by the diverse biome of coral reefs we can see how the ocean
reacts to the changes being sustained(change). Humans play a major part in the growth of the coral
reef(change). The pollution we make from the gases, chemicals, and tools we use end up in the ocean
especially effecting reefs as they are located near shores(rewrite). With the ever increasing
temperatures due to global warming the coral reef biomes are becoming unstable(rewrite). The
increasing acidification of the ocean is a ticking bomb for coral reefs(change). I will be looking at the
effects these issues have on both coral reef biomes and the ocean, as I believe through coral reef
biomes we can both see the health of the ocean and the effectiveness of solutions are to reduce the
current issues plaguing the ocean.(change)
Human introduction into the ocean and reefs causes overfishing. The increasing cause of sound
pollution by humans is drowning out the oceans natural sounds. The litter left behind equally effects
both coral and the ocean.
Overfishing by humans effects the health of the targeted species will also destroying the natural order
of the area. According to the National Ocean Service (NOAR) the effects of overfishing on coral reefs

4. Palladio s Influence On America
Prior to writing his four published book on architecture Palladio had written two different books that
was based on architecture. These books were published in 1554 in Rome while he was visiting
Daniele Barbaro. Essentially the purpose of the books was to serve as guidebooks for historical
monuments within Rome. The first book he had written contained short descriptions for travelers that
discussed the appearance and history of classical ruins. His guidebook was actually a replacement for
an older medieval guidebook, which focused more on the mythical side of Rome. Palladio s book
stood out because he pertained more to factual information rather than fictional. Many people, who
were visiting Rome, bought the first book because they found it ... Show more content on

His design features such as porticos, classical orders, and dwellings have inspired many American
architects to recreate these designs in their buildings. As previously mentioned, porticos represent the
importance of the residents and enhanced the architecture. The Frascati building in Virginia proves
that the portico served as a symbol of importance because the resident was a member of the U.S.
Supreme Court. This buildings portico is almost identical to Palladio s Villa Emo s. There are many
other buildings in America that have integrated this feature into their designs following Palladio s
principles. Nevertheless there are other modern day architects who did not follow his principles and
the porticos are unsymmetrical. Although some have failed to follow his principles there are some
buildings that portray his designs well. An example of an American building with a portico is
Whitehall. The portico is located in the central section of the building. Along with the portico the
architect of this building incorporated Corinthian columns into the design, a classical order that was
seen in many of Palladio s

5. The Wanderer And The Wife s Lament
For the Anglo Saxons, the world was a wind swept place, cold and hostile. Not only did they face the
constant threat of belligerent bands of warriors sweeping across the horizon, but the elements
themselves buffeted their homes and wore away the hulls of their ships. While temporary safety could
be found in the warmth of the mead hall and the companionship of others, the devastation of war,
disease, and time would slowly etch away at even the most stable and peaceful society. This unease
spurred Anglo Saxon poets to write some of their most beautiful, haunting pieces of verse, like
Hrothgar s Sermon from Beowulf and the Elegies. While the poems The Wanderer and The Wife s
Lament chronicle the suffering and eventual demise of the individual, The Ruin describes the
crumbling remains of a once glorious city. Through the extensive use of imagery, compelling rhythm,
and a stately meter, the poet of The Ruin emphasizes the themes of death, decay, and the inevitable
downfall of mighty civilizations messages further underscored by the loss of major sections of the
poem itself. The poet begins with the foundation of the city walls, all that remains of a mighty
structure which had ...seen one kingdom after another / stood in the storm, steep and tall, then tumbled
(The Ruin poet 10b 11). However, the destruction of this city is not due to these many regimes or
human combatants, but by the forces of nature as commanded by wyrd. Significantly, the poet

6. Respiratory Failure Essay
This form of respiratory distress is commonly seen in premature newborns because their lungs are
immature and do not have enough surfactant to keep the lungs open. It is seen almost immediately
after birth or in the few hours following birth.
Cause
This decrease in surfactant causes the infant work harder to draw air into the lungs, which leads to low
oxygenation to the rest of the body s organs. The more premature the infant, the greater the chance of
developing RDS; other factors include previous baby s with RDS, a mother with diabetes, C section or
early delivery, a fast labor, a multiple fetus pregnancy and/or any problems that would reduce or
disrupt blood flow to the infant through the placenta.
Signs and Symptoms Symptoms can be seen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are also given supplemental warm, humidified oxygen but must be closely watched to avoid
toxicity. The doctor may also chose to use a CPAP machine to force air into the baby s nose, or a
mechanical ventilator if the infant is unable to breathe on its own.
Nursing Intervention
1. Monitor infant VS, note respiration rate, depth, lung sounds.
2. Administer supplemental oxygen as ordered.
3. Keep infant warm because premature infants are unable to regulate body temp
4. Administer IV fluids
5. Assess need for suction to clear mouth, nose, throat of mucus.
6. Monitor arterial blood gas
Nursing Diagnosis
1. Impaired gas exchange related to immature lungs
2. Ineffective breathing pattern
3. Impaired spontaneous ventilation
4. Risk for unstable blood glucose
Long Term RDS worsens from days 2 7 (Neonatal) and if an infant dies from the complication it is
usually during this time period. Other long term problems include bleeding into the lungs or brain,
issues with the development of the lungs, blood clots, mental disability due to lack of oxygen, and
possible blindness or eye

7. Strand Breaks
DNA Double Strand Breaks (DSBs) are valuable when controlled, but potentially fatal when not the
programmed DSB is an essential part of particular cellular processes (e.g. VDJ switch recombination
during immune system development and during homologous recombination in meiosis and mitosis),
but an unprogrammed DSB is also considered the most lethal type of lesion for a cell (Sedelnikova et
al., 2003). Cells are confronted with DNA damage due to a variety of stimuli under normal
physiological conditions and at each instance the cell must make a decision concerning the ratio of
DNA repair and apoptotic response (Cook et al., 2009). This response entails firstly the detection of
DNA damage among the undamaged DNA, and secondly a signal amplification ... Show more content

These structural rearrangements require the formation and repair of DSBs, and therefore great
amounts of γH2AX phosphoryliosis appears in adult germ cells (Blanko Rodriguez, 2009). In mouse
spermatocytes, an intense γH2AX signal appeared in leptotene nuclei and in sex chromosomes (in the
XY body formation) during pachytene (Mahadevaiah et al., 2001), in intermediate and B
spermatogonia, as well as in homogeneous nuclear staining in A spermatogonia and round spermatids
(Hamer et al., 2003). More recently, using techniques that disrupt the cell cell structure, the presence
of γH2AX foci was found in mouse metaphase spermatogonia (Forand et al., 2004) and was linked
with the lateral elements of the synaptonemal complex in the early pachytene stage in human oocytes
(Roig et al., 2004) but also in grasshopper and mouse spermatocytes (Chicheportiche et al., 2007). In
addition, γH2AX was also detected in elongating spermatids of these animals, where it is associated
with DSBs during chromatin remodeling (Cabrero et al., 2007). Blanko Rodriguez (2009) also showed
that H2AX phosphorylation hits the highest point at several mitotic and meiotic phases of
spermatogonia and spermatocytes, as well as during spermatid

business in San Francisco, and earned a reputation of trust by dealing rapidly and responsibly with
people s money. (History of Wells Fargo, n.d.) Today, Wells Fargo is a bank holding company that

interest of its customer s, then employees should have goals that reflect that mission. Employees and
the company could have benefitted from frequently reviewing their goals to ensure they kept up with
the company s mission and values. They need to set the right goals and have the right performance
conversations. The high pressure and unrealistic goals was the primary issue that drove the employees

9. Mothers Work Case
1.What facts in this case appear to be the most important to you?
When I think about Mothers Work and the firing of one of their pregnant employees, Papageorge,
what I find most alarming is that some members of Mothers Work management felt that she could not
do her job efficiently because she was pregnant. I find this disheartening considering the founder of
the company started the company while she was pregnant and marketed the company to working
class, pregnant women. Another fact that I deem important would be that another member of the
management team, be it lower, refused to fire Papageorge stating that it was against the law to do so.
The same manager informed her that there were ways around the law and to fire her anyways. When

I believe the publicity from this case has damaged the reputation of Mothers Work because even the
suggestion of discrimination tarnishes the reputation of a company. Employees may not want to work
for a company that they feel will discriminate against them. Investors may not want to invest in
Mothers Work if they feel like they are a company that discriminates or has a bad public image.
Women may choose to shop elsewhere because of the how Mothers Work chooses to treats their
female employees.
3. What actions (if any) should Mothers Work, Inc. take? What message should the company send to
the public? Who is Mothers Work s target audience?
In my opinion Mothers Work needs to seriously and immediately address the issue. They needed to
send an immediate announcement to all management that there will be diversity training. They needed
to make public a flex schedule that is beneficial to pregnant employees and show that they support
their employees. While their target audience may be their customers I will always love a quote from
Richard Branson that I believes sums up who your audience should always be take care of you

10. Johannes Kepler s A Perfect World
Johannes Kepler was a modern individual and he believed that God would have created a perfect
world and in that world everything was geometrically perfect. In Banville s book about Kepler it says,
The search for knowledge everywhere encounters geometrical relations in nature, which God, in
creating the world, laid out (Banville 1981, p.145). As he pursued the answer to planetary motion, he
assumed that the planets orbited the sun in a perfect circle. He tried to seek order in his chaotic life
through science and rational thought. While pursuing his research on planetary orbit, he struggled to
keep his three worlds; rational, emotional, and social; in order. Kendura says that a novel provides
knowledge of life as lived by individuals (Kendura 1988). Kepler s life definitely represents the
hassles a normal person s life is like. In his rational world he could logically come up with a reason for
different phenomenas. He spends his life researching planetary orbit and astronomical tables. Dealing
with his rational world is somewhat easier than dealing with his emotional and social worlds because
the rational world is based on research, facts, and evidence. For Toulmin planetary orbit is just a
physical law of nature, which according to the Cartesian Dichotomy would fall under the body and not
the mind. Kepler also follows the dichotomy in many ways, so he would probably agree with Toulmin.
His emotional life is probably the messiest of his three worlds. In his emotional

When beginning the psychology major, I was unsure of what my long term educational and
professional goals were. Now that I am in my senior year, I am still not positive about my path overall
path. However, I do have a plan that I feel will work perfect for me. I am reaching a time in my life
where I will be financial stable, be married, have a partner to share responsibilities, and have the
knowledge to be the best parent possible. I think it is important for one parent to be home before the
children enter preschool. Once the children are entered in school, I feel it would be a good time for me
to either go back to school or choose a career I can achieve with my bachelor s degree. If I were to go
back to school, it would most likely be to obtain a master s degree for counseling. I am very interested

Performance Evaluation of a WiMAX Testbed under VoIP Traffic
ABSTRACT
Among several first mile solutions proposed so far, the key advan¬tage of the IEEE 802.16 standard,
widely known as WiMAX, is to ensure large area coverage and rather inexpensive equipment at the
subscriber side. Modern requirements to wireless connectivity include mandatory QoS guarantees for
a wide set of real time appli¬cations: this is the case of the ever growing trend of VoIP calls. To this
aim, WiMAX supports natively real time traffic. In this paper, we report on the results of
measurements performed on a WiMAX Alvarion testbed, located in Turin, Italy. In particular, through
syn¬thetic VoIP traffic generation, we obtained the corresponding E model figures, thus tracing the
system operation intervals.

Man s Inheritance of Savagery Lord of the Flies is a novel written by William Golding, a former
member of the Royal Navy. His naval career allowed him to observe human nature which led him to
write the novel. Lord of the Flies takes place in the midst of a raging war. A plane evacuating a group
of British schoolboys is shot down over a deserted tropical island. As the boys try to cope with their
situation, they descend into chaos. The novel conveys Golding s belief that man has a savage nature.
In William Golding s novel Lord of the Flies, three major symbols that all work to evoke the theme of
savagery are Castle Rock, the scar, and the lord of the flies . Castle Rock is a location in the novel in
which Jack and is tribe of savages dwell. The place becomes a more prominent and significant place
as savagery descends on the island. The events that transpire at Castle Rock symbolizes that the island
is descending into savagery. As Ralph confronts Jack about returning Piggy s glasses, Ralph pushed up
his hair and gazed at the green and black mask before him trying to remember what Jack looked like
(178). This demonstrates that civilization is slipping away and the boys are reverting to a more
primitive nature. Earlier in the novel, rational thought is present and rules are established which are
initially followed by everyone, including Jack. Ralph now finds it difficult to think of him as the boy
he once knew. Now that

19. Milton Freidman s Position In The Gospel Of Wealth
It is a general consensus that from an economic perspective that businesses are expected to benefit
shareholders and contribute to society through value maximization. Milton Freidman, however, takes
this a step further by asserting that this is the basis of moral behavior for businesses and that they act
immorally when they diminish profit by trying to assume other social responsibilities instead of letting
greater population do that on their own. Although this philosophy would ideally maximize both profit
and the amount of money that people could contribute to the social cause of their choice, it does not
work as efficiently in a society where there a large portion of society is not in a place to focus on
social issues. When this situation is viewed from the perspective of Maslow s hierarchy of needs, it is
evident that until substantial gains are made in the quality of life in the general population, Freidman s
position will not result in social responsibility. Andrew Carnegie unknowingly takes the hierarchy of
needs into account when he counters Freidman s position in the Gospel of Wealth. In his work,
Carnegie argues that the proper way to maximize the efficiency of social causes is for elite

22. Resistance From The Jewish Resistance
Jewish Resistance has been pondered for many years about what it truly was. For most historians
many believe that there was no true form of resistance from the Jewish people to stop the holocaust
while other historians argue that they did all they could in order to stop the holocaust from happening.
While I believe that both sides of this argument are true in the sense that Jewish Resistance was
widespread, but there were no connecting pieces in order to make Jewish Resistance affective enough
to stop the holocaust from occurring. In order to even begin to argue if Jewish resistance was effective
or not we have to first know what the actual meaning of resistance is. Jews had to main forms of
resistance, one was known as spiritual resistance while the other was a more common form of
resistance known as armed resistance. One is when you take up weaponry and manpower in order to
stop your oppressors, in this case the Nazis from achieving their goal of exterminating the Jewish
population as a whole. On the other hand, you have spiritual resistance which were ways of trying to
keep Jewish life normal under the Nazi Regime which were things like continuing to educate the
youth and still engaging in Jewish religious practices even though they had been made unlawful under
Nazi rule. While both of these may be considered resistance Raul Hilberg states that true resistance is
when you your efforts are a direct action to impede the goals of your opposition from succeeding. In

23. Theme Of Hope And Despair By Douglas Coupland
Hope is stronger than despair. The short story by Douglas Coupland contains 2 major themes: hope
and despair. Although despair is mentioned a plethora of times, hope is much more overriding. Hope is
the sole reason why the narrator has never lost the sensation of always being on the brink of some
magic revelation (p.1). He then goes on saying that if only I would look closely enough at the world,
then that magic revelation would be mine. This line shows that the narrator still believes there is a
chance for him to get closure about what had happened recently (p.2). Also, his mom says people like
birds because they free us from the unique sorrow of being human (p.2). However, the narrator
disagrees with her despair and says that birds

24. Essay on Jesse Cleveland Owens
James Cleveland Owens otherwise known as Jesse was an Olympic long jumper and sprinter whose
speed and inspirational defiance of Hitler shocked the world. The 1936 Olympics were held in Berlin
and Adolf Hitler of the Nazi party believed that these Olympic Games would showcase the great skill
of the Aryan (Caucasian) race, and the last person he would expect to show him up would be an
African American man (Barnes 1). With sixty six U.S. Olympic contestants competing in the Games,
the American race was really put on the spot in front of Hitler, the most powerful man in the world
(Smith 1). Jesse Owens was one of these men, and while being laughed at by Hitler during his one

He argued that the Olympic ideal was to be a time out from war and above politics (Smith 4).
Owens was an underprivileged African American boy that grew up in the south during the early
nineteen hundreds, his chances of making the Olympics were far out of his reach. He was born in
Oakville, Alabama and was the youngest in the family with six brothers and three sisters (Barnes 1).
At the age of nine Owens family moved to Columbus Ohio because of the bad economy and
segregation that was prominent in the south. When Jesse was five he had developed a life threatening
tumor on his chest, but because of his families overwhelming poverty he never received proper
medical care (McCoy 1). However according to McCoy (1), One day Jesse woke up to his mother
Mary standing over him with a sterilized knife and boiling water. She cut the tumor off her baby boy,
causing him to bleed for three days. Fortunately, he survived the amateur surgery. Surprisingly this
surgery performed by his mother was successful and Owens never had issues with the tumor or the
surgery at any time in his life. As a kid Jesse was very shy and it was because of this shyness he
possessed that he is called Jesse Owens today. According to Smith (3), When his new teacher asked

26. Examples Of Harmonizing A Harmonic Melody
How to Harmonize a Tonal Melody
Ultimately, harmonizing a melody is a matter of personal taste. Nevertheless, although you have some
leeway in the selection of chords, a certain standard of musical communication, known as style,
prevents you from exercising complete freedom.
Harmonizing a Chorale Phrase
The following general principles will guide our choice of chords for a Chorale harmonizations as
much like those of Bach as possible:
1. You must use half (I V, IV V, or ii V) or authentic (V I) cadences for the final two notes of each
phrase.
2. You should use circle progressions throughout in each phrase. Circle progressions are more often
longer and more abundant near the cadence than at the beginning of the phrase.
3. Harmonize each melody note with one chord. It is possible to repeat chords occasionally, but
adjacent repeated chords are usually in different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A typical melody will have no more than one or two structural tones per measure. (The other notes are
connecting or embellishing notes.) The chord you apply to a structural tone should include the
structural tone as one of the three notes of the basic triad.
Now comes the work of fitting chords to these structural tones. We could apply one of three chords
that include the structural tone in the triad. As we continue on in this fashion, we can come up with
any number of interesting chord progressions. Once you ve assigned the chords to the structural tones,
return the melody to its expanded state. Note that when using the structural tone method, there is no
right or wrong way to decide which chords to apply Other Tips for Harmonizing a Melody: There are
other points you need to consider when fitting chords to a melody

27. Essay On Social Conventions In The Age Of Innocence, By...
In The Age of Innocence Edith Wharton greatly emphasizes the social conventions and unwritten rules
of New York society in the late 19th century. The characters believe that what is and what is not the
thing to do has the utmost importance. Wharton introduces this in the second chapter with, Few things
seemed to Newland Archer more awful than an offense against Taste, that far off divinity of whom
Form was the mere visible representative and vicegerent. (Wharton, 14). While these social
conventions may seem arbitrary and meaningless as time passes, the people within a society are bound
to them because the consequences of not following them are too great. If a person chooses to reject
these social principles, they are ostracized ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One example of this is the wedding scene at the beginning of Book Two. Newland has learned that
May pushed the wedding up and is now preparing to marry May. Although he knows May isn t the
right woman for him he goes on with the wedding anyway. In this scene, words with primitive
connotations such as rite and ritual are used to signify the unbreakable nature of the social
conventions. Wharton writes that Archer had gone through this formality as resignedly as through all
the others which made of a nineteenth century New York wedding a rite that seemed to belong to the
dawn of history. (153). Edith Wharton purposefully uses diction in this scene to draw attention to the
nature of societal customs in New York. By emphasizing the prehistoric nature of the ritual and by
calling a wedding a rite that seemed to belong to the dawn of history Wharton calls to attention the
duty that members of society have. People in this society must follow the rite and ritual because it has
been this way seemingly since the beginning of time. Breaking this custom would be like going
against society and would cause

28. The Popularity Of Dystopian Novels
Dystopian literature has risen in popularity in recent times because the novels have significant
meaning when being compared to the events of today and appeal to almost all young adults. They
embrace modern ideas that inspire teenagers to make a change and explore who they are. First of all,
dystopian novels are frequently being compared to current events and problems. This causes the
novels to have a similar emotional effect on people to the feelings people experience in everyday life.
Because so many of the problems in dystopian novels compare to the problems in regular people s
lives, the books have a very appealing nature. This is because they present the same problems people
encounter in everyday life, but offer a solution and make the impossible suddenly very possible.
Readers compare these books to the real world which makes them feel empowered and able to make a
change. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This interests young adults because their feelings are often displayed in the novels such as pressure to
conform, and anger at the unfairness of the world they live in. Young adults are often still exploring
who they want to be and these novels allow them to explore different characters that often have a
similar set of values to who they want to be. Therefore, dystopian novels are very relatable to teens
and can be metaphorically related to life. The rich and mean characters are often compared to the
popular kids and high school and propaganda to social media manipulation. But most importantly,
dystopian novels encourage young adults to choose who they want to be and make a difference in the
world. They give teenagers advice on how to find themselves and how it is normal to be different in

after his father decided that he and his younger sisters should start a family music group. However,
Sedaris has no desire to learn how to play guitar. His desire lies within singing jingles in the voice of

Sedaris desire to sing like Billie Holiday can also be linked to his father s passion for jazz music. His

34. Shear Flow Essay
Large scale shear flows are one of the most ubiquitous structures that naturally occur in a variety of
physical systems and play an essential role in determining the overall transport in those systems. For
example, stable shear flows can dramatically quench turbulent transport by shear induced enhanced
dissipation (see, e.g., Refs. ( removed HTML ) 1 16 ( removed HTML ) ). This occurs as a shear flow
distorts fluid eddies, accelerates the formation of small scales, and dissipates them when a molecular
diffusion becomes effective on small scales. One remarkable consequence of this turbulence
quenching is the formation of transport barrier where the transport is dramatically reduced. The
transition from low confinement to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In most of the previous works, the main focus was on the calculation of turbulent transport in a
stationary state in a forced turbulence. Different models of turbulence such as 2D and 3D
hydrodynamics and magnetohydrodynamic turbulence with/without rotation and stratification as well
as different types of shear flows (e.g., linear, oscillatory, and stochastic shear flows) ( removed HTML
) ( removed HTML ) 5 9 ( removed HTML ) ( removed HTML ) were considered previously. In
comparison, much less work was done on the effect of shear flows on the dynamics/time evolution of
turbulence, more precisely, how the enhanced/accelerated dissipation is manifested in time evolution.
A clear manifestation of shear flow effects on the dynamics seems especially important, given an
ongoing controversy over the role of a shear flow in transport reduction, e.g., whether it is due to the
reduction in cross phase (via an increased memory, as caused by waves) or the reduction in the
amplitude of turbulence via enhanced dissipation (e.g., see Refs. ( removed HTML ) 16 ( removed
HTML ) and ( removed HTML ) 20 ( removed HTML ) and references therein). A decaying turbulence
provides us with an excellent framework in which this can be investigated in depth. We thus consider
a simple decaying two dimensional hydrodynamic turbulence model and examine the transient
relaxation of the vorticity by different
