MFI sustainability: The role of subsidies and grants
Microfinance institutions (MFI) have created intense debates in an industry of traditional banking.
Being primarily focused on mission of poverty reduction through economic stimulation of low income
areas, MFI have sharpened the credit policy to specification of area of interests. The major distinction
is loan interest rate being notably higher in comparison to profit orientated financial institutions
(Rosenberg et al. 2009). The reason roots in excessive cost of funds and administrative loses faced by
growing industry. As noted in Cull et.al (2009), interest paid by borrowers represents the struggle of
MFI to overcome the burden of expenses and achieve financial sustainability. The latter however, can
be reached by altering the capital structure of MFI through diversification of source of funding or
rejection of capital which can lead to malfunction. As soon as the changes are implemented,
institutions can proceed to expansion reaching increasing return to scale and beneficially affecting
sustainability. This essay would focus on the role on subsidies in performance of MFI. The rationale
behind exploring this form of noncommercial capital is that total amount of subsidized capital in MFI

Introduction
Sickle cell disease, also known as SCD, is a hereditary blood disorder that takes place due to mutation
in the hemoglobin gene that is found in red blood cells. While it is said to have originated in Africa
and is mostly predominant in African Americans, sickle cell disease is now common among different
ethnic groups all over the world. Sickle cell anemia (HbSS) infects an estimated 70,000 to 100,000
Americans (Housman) and accounts for approximately 70% of anemia in the United States.

These subunits are held together by ionic, hydrogen bonds, van der Waals forces, hydrophobic
interactions as well as heme groups that are made up of Fe2+. Hemoglobin can be found in two
different states. The first state is known as the T state when it is tense and oxygen deprived. The
second state is known as R state when is relaxed and oxygenated. Hemoglobin first binds to oxygen
then transports it to blood vessels, which have low oxygen levels. After it releases the oxygen the
blood vessels, the red cells then transports carbon dioxide (CO2) from the tissues to the lungs where it
picks oxygen once more.
Cooperativiy, Affinity, and Efficiency
When a subunit binds to oxygen, it changes it conformation and sends messages to other subunits to
bind to oxygen as well. When more hemoglobin monomers (subunits) bind to oxygen, it is increasing
hemoglobin s affinity to oxygen, thus leading to better cooperativity. It was also discovered that there
is a higher affinity for purified hemoglobin rather than the hemoglobin inside the red blood cells due
to the anionic compound 2,3 bisphosphoglycerate (2,3 BPG). This molecule binds to hemoglobin in a
small pocket only found in the T state when it is deoxygenized and allows it become stable. It further
causes a reduction in hemoglobin s affinity to oxygen, working out in its favor. During the transition

Ironically the 1965 act was in response to issues with low academic performance of impoverished
students (as will be discussed later, standardized testing has a negative impact on low income
students). The groundwork for Common Core as we know it was laid out much later. During the Bush
administration the No Child Left behind created a standardized test purgatory. Schools facilitated
cheating and a chronic issue with schools lowering the passing rates created unsustainable issues. The
economic recession and the Obama Administration also attempted to reform the system with what is
known as the Race to the Top . Under this system there was a funding incentive for high performing
schools. This system also relied heavily on standardized testing. An interesting repercussion of the
Race to the Top is that it created a massive data drive to collect student information. Out of these two
failed programs and an economic recession came the drive for Common Core. common core was
developed in 2009 and implemented in 2010, it was then accepted by 45 states. The education industry

Making the Call
In my paper I will try and explain the reason of why I would make the call to launch the Challenger in
1986. As we all know we had a horrific accident when the Challenger was launched on January 28,
1986. There were seven crew members who lost their lives when the Challenger blew up within only
73 seconds of flight. This was a major setback in the United States space explorations and prompted
NASA to temporarily suspend all future shuttle missions.

The data showed that the rubber seals on the shuttle s booster rockets wouldn t seal properly in cold
temperatures and this would be the coldest launch ever. (Berkes, 2016) Having been given this
information I would make the decision to launch. Sending shuttles up with some risk was the norm at
NASA, and it was understood that some risk was unavoidable. The possibility of some primary O ring
erosion was found acceptable because of the redundancy of the secondary O ring. Over a period of
time, the amount of erosion that was acceptable grew increment by increment. The Okaying of the
Challenger launch was the result of day to day decisions made over a period of years a kind of
incremental acceptance of deviance that Vaughan compares to Hannah Arendt s banality of evil. As
she argues, incrementalism can contribute to extraordinary events (Tankard, 1996).
The pressure being put on me to send the Challenger was enormous, the President would be giving his
