Tone is a device used by authors in order to evoke emotions in their audience. The tone can be
anything but it greatly effects how the reader receives the message of the piece. For example I
analyzed two different poems, both with the same subject but with very different tones. The way I
received each poem was very different. The first, by Richard Lovelace titled To Lucasta had a
passionate tone while the second poem by Wilfred Owen titled Dulce et Decorum Est had a cynical
tone. The tones of these poems were created using similar literary devices but their results were very
different.
While short, Richard Lovelace says much through the tone in his 17th century poem To Lucasta. At
first glance the poem seems very organized with 3 stanzas each with 4 lines. Every other line rhymes,
which gives the audience a feel of playfulness and whimsy. One would assume that the message of the
poem would also be just as organized. However, the speaker seems to be battling with feelings of
regret and excitement. The overall tone of this poem seems to be apologetic yet passionate. The
speaker is apologetic about his decision to go to war but also seems to be passionate and enticed by
the thoughts of his new adventure. Lovelace uses imagery and figure of speech to create this tone by

Diving into Change The fictional novel entitled That Summer was written by author, Sarah Dessen. It
was published in 1996 as her first book to be sold. Dessen states, It was actually the third one I wrote,

If you have ever heard or watched the movie Summer of Sam, an American crime movie directed by
Spike Lee in 1999 than you would know filming took place in a Bronx neighborhood called Throgs

redemption or revenge? When righting a wrong, redemption is a more effective method than revenge.
Redemption will usually result in less violence and there will be less problems to deal with. Revenge
on the other hand, will usually result in more violence and it occasionally bites back on whoever was
getting revenge on someone else or a group of people for some specific reason and sometimes things
will tend to not go as planned.
An example would be from a book titled A Long Way Gone by Ismael Beah. In page 128 of the book,
Ishmael says I was talking at gatherings in Freetown about child soldiering and how it must be
