The Taum Sauk Upper Reservoir Failure Occurred On December
The Taum Sauk Upper Reservoir Failure occurred on December 14, 2005, ironically on the same
day the annual drill between Ameren and local emergency personnel was scheduled to be held.
This failure released 1.5 billion gallons of water down Profitt Mountain and into Johnson Shut Ins
State Park. This was an emergency event that impacted one family s home, and three vehicles
traveling on Route N.
The reservoir failure is classified as a man made event as it was caused by a failure of the over
pumping protective systems which includes pressure transducers that monitor the water level
within the upper reservoir and report the status of the water level to a remote monitoring center.
This created a cascading series of man made natural events in ... Show more content on

And it involves interaction with familiar faces, tasks, procedures, and organizations. (Auf der
Heide, Erik. 1989) An emergency is generally personal in nature. A disaster is an event
associated with the impact of a natural hazard, which leads to increased mortality, illness and/or
injury, and destroys or disrupts livelihoods, affecting the people or an area such that they (and/or
outsiders) perceive it as being exceptional and requiring external assistance for recovery (Cannon
1994, 29, fn.2). Finally, a catastrophe can be viewed as ...any disaster that overwhelms the ability
of state, local, and volunteer agencies to adequately provide victims with such life sustaining mass
care services as food, shelter, and medical assistance within the first 12 to 24 hours. (GAO, Disaster
Management, 1993, p. 3).
The Emergency Management Cycle
The four phases of the emergency management cycle are Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and
Recovery. Mitigation is the process of reducing the occurrence, minimizing impact of the event, and
preventing an event from occurring. Mitigation steps can happen before and after an event.
Preparedness is the ability to handle the event. This includes planning and preparations to help in
response and rescue operations. Evacuation plans and stocking up on food, water, medicine, and
pet supplies are examples of

Warner King Prince Research Paper
Prince has always believed that machines have changed music into something that doesn t sound
real ( The Artist Formerly Known, 1997). He is an original, unique, and independent artist. Prince
may also be one of the most influential artists in the music industry because of his whimsical stage
performance and his one of a kind genre. Princebegan in a musical family that ultimately led him to
be a solo artist, and throughout his career he signed a contract with Warner Bros. where he had
setbacks, accomplishments, and major success with records; he is still impacting musictoday with
his unique genre. Prince was always interested in music and he followed in the footsteps of those
around him. When Prince was five he became interested in music because his father was the
head of a swing dance group and his mother sang for the group. Prince played many instruments,
which led him to create his first band with his friend and bass player Cymone at the age of
twelve. They called the band Grand Central which they later changed the name to Champagne.
His band stayed together for about five years before it split up (Stambler, 1999). After leaving
Champagne, Prince worked and wrote songs for Chris Moon, who recorded songs for his old band,

express himself freely. His relationship with them fell apart when they couldn t agree on the

Expert Insanity In Court Cases
Courts and the jurors serving in them need to be cautious when listening to expert testimony given,
regarding the mental capabilities or sanity of an individual. This is because it is impossible to go
into the mind of the defendant and know for a fact that they are mentally capable, which causes any
assessment to be in part guesswork. Also the definition of what the judiciary has considered
mentally insane has changed through time and in different legal systems. I argue that expert
testimony in cases regarding mental sanity is not uniform and varies in different instances. As a
society should be trying to make the definitions and assessment of sanity the uniform in all of the
states and United States federal courts for persons to be tried... Show more content on

This model was intended to be more encompassing than the M Naughten standard of the past, and
allow for both medical and psychiatric evidence. The A.L.I was much easier than the M Naughten
standard because Instead of requiring a defendant to have no understanding of right and wrong, the
A.L.I. standard requires that he lack a substantial capacity to understand the right from wrong, and
expands the M Naughten rule to include an irresistible impulse component. Years later the Insanity
Defense Reform Act of 1984 essentially lead to the A.L.I. test being discarded in favor of a new
version which more closely resembled the M Naughten ruling. Under this ruling the defendant must
show that their mental handicap is severe. This reform act was largely due to public outcry from

Wasteful Gov t Spending on Education in 3rd Worlds
National and international development is a human instinct and serves only one specific purpose;
which is the advancement of humanity and specifically the betterment of the quality of life for
everyone. The terminology development usually includes such areas as foreign aid, healthcare,
equality, infrastructure, economics, human rights and educationas well as many others. International
development differs compared to national development; it was created by governments and
institutions after World War Two in order to concentrate on topics like easing poverty and to
improve living conditions in destroyed countries, but more importantly in former colonies which
were now free and to become part of a different and hopefully better world.... Show more content on

Furthermore, violations of human rights and famine have continued for decades or at least since
the last colonial powers pulled out of a country and left them to themselves without ever thinking
about the consequences of a power vacuum and leaving a particular nation without an economic
structure or any sufficiently developed educational system. In World crisis in education: The
view from the 1980 s , Philip H. Coombs looks back to the 50 s and 60 s and describes the
unfortunate situation of TWN and how little has changed. The book might as well be called ......:

no one would notice that the book was written three decades earlier. According to Coombs, western
style education was new to TWN and trying to carry out this system immediately after
decolonization would bring instant and noticeable changes, with a few exceptions, these WIN s
ideas of how to educate efficiently never took a foothold in the third world, rather seem to be
nothing but a constant investment without noticeable results. Even now, countless NGO s and
foreign government agencies pour large amounts of money and time into undeveloped states, and it
gives the impression that very little is accomplished. What is astonishing is that already back in the
1960 s a large bubble of optimism has burst but since then attempts continue to blow up the same

What Is The Theme Of Deception In Hamlet By Shakespeare
Deception is an action driven with the motive to employ one purpose which can be to mislead
another individual in order to gain knowledge, to get revenge, or to reveal a plan unknown to the
public eye and keeping it that way for the dutiful well being of the Kingdom of Denmark. In the
tragedy Hamlet by William Shakespeare, deception develops into the character trait that initiates the
actions, heartbreak, and revenge driving this play. This attribute held by Hamletis the leading cause
of this same flaw development in Ophelia, King Claudius, and many others in an attempt to
reinforce the theme. This theme is one of heroism, but the deceptive notion each action reveals
challenges the perception the reader has on each of the main characters.... Show more content on

These characters were furthering the play by continually revealing and shaving back the many
layers of Hamlet to show the multitude of sides and angles one character can have in a story.
Like night time to day and day to night time, each angle presents a new perspective. In this play
Horatio, King Claudius, and Laeretes are foil characters to Hamlet. Horatio is calm and level
headed, and he does not allow himself to be misguided. He stays true to himself the entire
tragedy. Remaining loyal for the entirety of the play, Horatio contrast Hamlet. Since the first
moments of his Uncle Claudius rule, Hamlet began his journey into a deceptive state of being.
Accomplishing this by failing to acknowledge his Uncle s title. This brings into the light Hamlet
s unloyalty to even persons of kin, this is also the reason King Claudius is a foil to Hamlet. He
always is in need for something more and to achieve this he will stop at nothing. Hamlet is very
charismatic in his approach to killing the king in the name of revenge, but does not successfully
come face to face with the actions until the very last moments. Waiting the entirety of the novel,
Hamlet finally seizes the moment to kill his Uncle Claudius. Making sure it is not a moment of
repentance and it is an unmistaken moment on sin to ensure his fate, Hamlet kills his uncle
following the moments of his mother s last breath. This in part shows Hamlet to

Herodotus Sparknotes
Herodotus, consider as the father of history, was born in the ancient Halicarnassus, current Turkey,
and lived between 485 and 425 BC, about 150 years previous to the creation of the Library of
Alexandria. Moreover, due to Persian rule over greece, Herodotus fled to Samos resulting from his
conflicts with the local government and will not return until 450 BC, when he participated part in
the campaign to defeat Lygdamis, to once again leave the city after the completion of the campaign.
Furthermore, Herodotustraveled to Athens at the time of its peak, allowed him to contemplate the

Low Transmission Fluid Analysis
The transmission on your vehicle plays a vital role in keeping your vehicle on the road and working
properly. If your transmission is damaged, you are not going to be able to safety drive your vehicle
and if your transmission suffers serious damage, you are not going to be able to drive at all.
One of the most common issues that develop with transmission is the fluid ends up leaking out of
the transmission. This is a very serious problem. Your automatic transmission fluid, also known as
ATF, is vital to keeping your transmission lubricated and working properly.
Consequences of Low Transmission Fluid
When your vehicle begins to leak transmission fluid, that means it does not have enough

Transmission fluid tends to have a red to pink color to it and it has a nice sweet smell most of the
time. However, if your transmission is having issues, it could have more of a burnt smell to it.
You can see if transmission fluid is leaking under your vehicle by putting a flat cardboard box
under your car at night and pulling it out in the morning and see if you spot any transmission fluid
on the cardboard.
You can also open up your hood and check out what level the transmission fluid is at. You should
be able to see if you have enough transmission fluid in your vehicle. Then, check in a few days to
see if the level has lowered at all. Your transmission fluid should not dramatically drop after a few
days, so if the level does drop, that means your transmission is leaking fluid.
What Burning Transmission Fluid Means
Another sign to watch out for when inspecting your transmission fluid is a burning smell instead
of a sweet smell. This smell may come from the leaking transmission fluid or from the fluid
reservoir tank, or you may notice it when you are driving. This is not a good

Antigone By Sophocles Antigone
In Sophocles, Antigone begins with the stages of grief as Antigone mourns the loss of her two
brothers, Polyneikes and Eteokles, who die simultaneously in face to face combat in Thebes.
Eteokles dies with honor fighting for the Thebesians and is honored with rituals and a proper
burial. The body of Polyneikes, who attempted to burn the city of Thebes, is left for the dogs
and birds to savage. Thesbesian s law forbids anyone giving a traitor, like Polyneikes, a proper
burial, for that itself is a crime punishable by death. Antigone is angered that Polyneikes is not
going to receive a proper burial and is determined that she must honor him even if it means the end
of her life. Antigone alone attempts to bury her brother, but is captured and imprisoned, at which
point she decides to form a noose around her neck and end her life. Sophoclesleaves the reader to
question whether Antigone s suicide is an act of heroism, a stand for the citizens of Thebes, or a
selfish way of coping with personal trauma. Antigone sought assistance in burying her brother
from her only family member alive, her sister, Ismene, who tries to reason with her. Ismene
proclaims, Remember, we re women. How can we fight men? They re stronger (Sophocles 749).
The physical statures of neither Polyneikes nor Antigone were not ever mentioned, but in general
men typically weigh more and have a larger build than women. We have to assume that she doesn t
want to elicit help from others because the risk of

The Prologue And Part One Of The Book Nietzsche
Whether the happening be good or bad, humans tend to rationalize the circumstance and make it
an event that served a greater purpose. In Thus Spoke Zarathustra by Friedrich Nietzsche,
Zarathustra describes this behavior, along with many others, as life denying as he was mainly
concerned with ethics. The prologue tells the story of how Zarathustra went up a mountain and
spent ten years there gaining wisdom; he then descends to share his wisdom but the people
laugh at him and he comes to realize that they did not and would not take him seriously because
they were too far gone with old beliefs. He also came to the conclusion that he did not want
people who conform and do not think for themselves, or followers, but rather people who desire
to go in the same direction he is going. Throughout the prologue and part one of the book
Nietzsche is trying to teach those who can think for themselves about how to live well and without
excuses. The prologue mainly consists of Zarathustra descending from the mountain back into the
town and realizing that no one takes him seriously. Zarathustra is discouraged at first but then
realizes that he was not targeting the right audience and begins again. He starts off by establishing
an overman, who is someone who can affirm and embrace life completely without any excuses.
Consecutively he establishes a last man, who is said to be someone who has no questions, no
chaos, no creativity, and seeks comfort and security. His view of man is a cross

Emile Durkheim Theory Of Suicide
Traditionally, suicide was thought to be a purely individual decision but French sociologist
Emile Durkheim recognized that the phenomenon had a social dimension. He believed in the
influence of society on the individual and that if anything can explain that relation, it is suicide.
His use of the data of suicide, not specific cases and reports, to study the societal trends reveals
his true subject of study: society as a whole and its role in the individual experience. Durkheim
uses the study of suicide via the quantitative methodological approach as a tool to study society
as a broader whole. Suicide, to Durkheim, is an exaggerated form of ordinary practices, and they
arise from comparable states of mind in people, with the only difference between daily and
suicidal behavior being the chance of death (Durkheim 20 21). Durkheim spends the majority of
the work dissecting the apparent motives for suicide (Durkheim 151) and observing the varieties
of suicide, a feat made difficult by the inaccurate reporting and misunderstandings of
investigators. Thus, to understand the types of suicide, we must reverse the order of our
research for There can only be as many different types of suicide as there are differences in the
causes from which they derive, (Durkheim 149). He says if they were all found to have the same
essential characteristics, they would be grouped in one class but observations that we would need
to have are more or less impossible obtain (Durkheim

However, Luxembourg is also the wealthiest and may be able to help provide for the Syrians.
Luxembourg is very critical of the EU s action regarding the Syrian refugee crisis. Luxembourg

The presidency prioritized the EU with other nations of the world to carry out initiatives to
implement an effective immigration policy (Programme and Priorities). Additionally, the Paris
terrorist attacks of November 2015 made migration policy even more of a priority for Luxembourg.
Even today in 2016, the migration crisis is becoming a great problem for the EU and its Member
States. Ignoring the issues will not solve the problem and Luxembourg clearly recognized that
migration within the EU is something that they must resolve. To manage with the influx of
migrants, the Council and the Parliament agreed to designate more than 2 million euros for
humanitarian aid and emergency assistance(Report of Achievement). The EU gave this money to
Member States who are having the hardest time with dealing the migrants. This would help smaller
countries, like Luxembourg, to manage the refugee crisis. Also, the Luxembourg presidency
implemented the European Agenda on Migration to focus on the issue of migration within and
outside the European Union (Report of the Achievement). This crisis is not just a European issue
and by talking with other countries, like Turkey, a better system can be created to help the refugees
and the people affected by the refugees. The refugee crisis is still an ongoing problem and the
Luxembourg presidency was the first to take action on the situation. In

Brief Overview of American Literature From Plymouth to the...
The trace in literature and history from Plymouth and Virginia colonies through the Jeffersonian
Enlightenment to the transcendentalists represented by Emerson and Hawthorne all begins with
John Smith, whom had been granted by a charter from King James I reached Virginia in 1607.
The settlers landed in what was Jamestown ready to begin the dangerous undertaking of
surviving in a new environment. Dealing with harsh winters, lack of drinking water, and the
spread of disease made life in Jamestown difficult for the settlers. Which Smith details in his
writing, later on a man named William Bradford set sail with for the new world with a religious
group called the puritans. The group landed on Massachusetts Plymouth Harbor in 1620. Soon
after being settled Bradford was made to be governer of the new colony. The people of the colony
suffered of a while until the help of the Massasoit leader of Native Americans in the New England
area showed the people of the colony how to harvest the right foods and there was even a
gathering of food and entertainment, which created an agreement between the Indians and the
colony in which lasted twenty four years. The pact did not last for much long after the
Wampanoag nation had been peaceful with the settlers and colonists. However, in 1675 son of
Massasoit, Metacom who was as called King Philip by the colonists led the Native Americans to

Essay On The Movie Whale Rider
In the movie Whale Rider directed by Niki Caro, many important objects are used to foreshadow
the later events involving protagonist Paikea Apirana, a young girl forbidden by tradition to
become the chief of her tribe. Although the outcome of the film seems quite unprecedented at first,
Director Caro conceals many clues regarding the ending for the audience to discover. She does this
through the use of camera angles, dialogue and props, notably through the use of the rope, the
Taiaha and the Rei Puta. Furthermore, while making links to certain scenes in the movie, Niki Caro
has hidden life lessons and morals regarding discrimination, prejudice and leadership that the
audience can closely relate to and learn from.
Firstly, an important object in Whale Rider is the Rope. It is used to repair a motor, and is used by

that can be seen at the end of the movie. This is shown in a medium shot of Paikea mending the

Teratogen Essay
Teratogens are all around pregnant women. Only look at the normal house hold toothpaste that
states on the bottle, to seek medical attention if swallowed. Almost everyone has toothpaste in
their home and uses it everyday but with all the chemicals, it is considered a teratogen if ingested.
Teratogens affect embryo s development and counselors can help prevent exposure to teratogens.
Almost any man made substance could be considered a teratogen to some extent. However, the
key question is at what level is a substance to be considered a teratogens because, to officially be
classified as a teratogen it has to alter the embryo from an unnatural growth or lack of. From the

of each major system. Teratogens could affect the heart development at three and half weeks to six

Teratogens can harm an embryo. Most will not kill an embryo. However, any large quantity of

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Market Pioneering
2.2.2 Market pioneering
Market pioneering has some overlap with the other sub variable pioneering orientation. Covin et
al., (2000) state that market pioneering is represented by a specific form of entrepreneurial
behavior. This form of behavior is represented by an organization that proactively creates or is a
first mover in a certain product market field. Companies that actively engage in market pioneering
are operating in an entrepreneurial way in a sense that they exploit certain market opportunities and
by the fact that they redefine how the competitions have to adjust to the company s pioneering
standards (Covin et al., 2000).
William and Fornell (1985) define a market pioneer as a company that is the first in developing

Intel actively searches for new opportunities in different (chip) markets, and when these new
markets after a while are getting more and more established, Intel protects its market share by

Focussing on the organizational level, research argues that in order to pursue exploratory innovation
, the business departments are supposed to be decentralized with loose cultures and have to be
relatively small (Benner Tushman, 2003). Startups more or less all meet those characteristics. This
should mean that the possibility to present ideas within business plan competitions could mostly be
exploratory in nature. There is no business structure more flexible and loose as a startup.
Exploratory innovation compared to pioneering orientation and market pioneering should be seen
as a balanced approach of both concepts. It tries to explain the internal as well as the external
environment by focussing on a radical innovation of its product but at the same time also respecting
the market demand and emerging customer

Survival Of Tsarism Essay
How far were divisions amongst opponents responsible for the survival of Tsarist rule, 1881 1905?
Divisions of opposing groups of the Tsar were important to the survival of Tsarist Russia.
However, other factors such as the church, the belief of the divine right, the army and the Okhrana
were also effective in keeping the Tsar in a state of power.
Firstly, the opposition groups of the Tsar were known as the Populists, the Liberals and the
Marxists. Each group had its own ideas on what was needed for Russia and each group wanted
change, however, there were many problems within the groups and none of them were willing to
work with each other. The Populists who were mainly concentrated on establishing a democratic

These teachings were a massive problem for the Populists when they assassinated Tsar Alexander
II, the people of Russia had seen the culprits publicly hanged by the Tsar s son, Alexander III and
this caused massive hatred towards the opposition group, especially as the Populists were built up
of 85% of the peasant population! The Tsar was seen as the Dear Father , who would want to kill
someone who had been put on the throne by God himself?
Thirdly, the Tsar had the benefit of controlling the army and the secret police force, the Okhrana.
The Tsar was the commander and chief of the Russian army, he had total control of it and they
had been loyal to the Tsar for many years (Nicholas I had an input in creating the Okhrana). The
army and the Okhrana were used very efficiently by the Tsars. If anybody opposed the Tsar with
violent protests or demonstrations, the army would be called in and many of the protesters
would be shot and trampled on by horses. As well as removing current threats to the Tsar, the
armies input effected possible opponents, as they knew what their own fate would be if they also
tried to oppose the Dear father . The Okhrana was also very effective, it was known for infiltrating
opposition groups and dividing them even further. If an opposition group member was caught, they
would be exiled to Siberia to die a cold and

Symbolism Of The Spider In The Chosen Chapter 51
In Chaim Potok s novel The Chosen, specifically chapter 9, Potok was able to symbolically
delineate Reuven and Danny s lives with a reference to a spider entrapping a fly. To start off,
Potok introduced the spider in the allegory as Reb Saunders. When Reuven noticed what was
going on near him, he recalled seeing the spider and saying, A spider had spun a web across the
corner of the upper rail, and there was a housefly trapped in it now... the spider, a small, gray, furry
looking spider, with long, wispy legs and black eyes, move across the web toward the fly (Potok
173 174). Reb Saunders can be seen as the spider from mainly the physical characteristics of it as
well as the actions. For example, when Reuven describes the spider having black eyes and gray,
furry looking , Reb Saunders falls under all of those features.... Show more content on

actions to convey a message about Danny. As Reuven was observing the fly he noted, The fly s
tiny black legs flayed the air fiercely, then its wings were free again, buzzing noisily, but it s
body remained intact (Potok 174). Danny can be seen as the fly because he was being kept from

Speech For Benevolent Parents
My benevolent parents. First off, I would just like to say thank you. You guys are as
unbelievable as a chicken driving a motorcycle through a hoop on fire. You have given everyone
a awe inspiring life and have given us everything and anything we have ever asked for and
desired. You have made my life as easy as reciting my ABC s. Thank you for giving us the best
childhood. Thank you for loving all of us unconditionally, and loving me a bit more. Thank you
also for giving me the proper tools to succeed in life. Finally, thank you for supporting us
throughout our lives and for the continued support in the future. Now, since in a couple more
years I will be heading off to the next big step in my life, college, I know that both of you guys are
going to miss me since I won t be home for long periods of time. Mom will definitely miss me
and call me but Dad will call me like once every week. He is a strong individual, like father, like
son. Since all of this would happen I was thinking that we should expand our family. However,
when I say expand our family I don t mean getting a baby, I mean we should acquire a Canis
lupus familiaris. In laymen s terms, we should procure a German Shepherd. Now, I understand
that you have disliked the topic and will sigh in disbelief that I m bringing it back up. However,
if we were to get a puppy, then I believe it would be good for us. I have brought together many
justifications of why obtaining a pup is helpful. A baby hound gives you company on those lonely
days and a dogs company would be satisfying. Dogs would also help you in making new friends
and getting to know the neighborhood and the people in the neighborhood. Also, getting a big
protective dog, such as a trained German Shepherd would keep you as safe as possible and would
risk its life for you. So you know that dogs are the best pets for you.
You will gain an extra companion. I understand that when I go to college, most of your children
will never be home. I will be at college, and the rest will be working. So when you miss me,
because I know you will, then our kind, and loving dog will be there for you. Getting a dog will
also mean that there will forever be a furry, friendly, playful friend at home. He will always be

Class Structure. Two words that have a division between one another based on the spelling
difference and its structure rules. It was written this way to separate one word for the other so
there is no confusion between each word. A similar role plays in the novel, The Kite Runner, as
the author, Khaled Hosseini, evokes two different worlds of the protagonists, Amir and Hassan, in
which one lives a Pashtun upper class life and the other a Hazara lower class life. Hosseini
expresses the importance of Amir and Hassan relationship and how it affects their relationship with
their social rank. In the novel, The Kite Runner, Hosseini portrays the divisions of Afghan society

Pashtuns were viewed as the dominant group of power and prosperity, who practice the
religious belief of Sunni Islam. Whereas, Hazaras were considered the peasant class that made a
minority sect of Islam in the country, who practice Shi a. The turning point, segregated the
Hazara from the Pashtuns when the Pashtuns had oppressed the Hazaras (Hosseini 9). Amir was

due to the fact that the Pashtuns were in control. Ethnic differentiation not only portrays a contrast,

Part of the communication process is making sure every student understand the classroom rules.
Designate a spot in the classroom to list these rules so they are visible to all students who enter
the classroom. By doing these things effectively will ensure the classroom runs smoothly and
will impede behavioral problems. Once students cross the threshold of the classroom it is a place
and time where one must be productive. By using good time management, students will be able
to stay on task, therefore; leaving little time for behavioral issues. Building good relationships is
a necessary part of maintaining order. Students who feel welcomed and important will be less
likely to cause behavioral problems and will be more likely to be a productive student. These
relationships will build mutual respect between the teacher and student. There are many different
resources, such as Harry Wong s book, The First Days of School and L L, on classroom and

Assumptions In The Film Atonement By Joe Wright
Assumptions are necessary for us to function as humans, if we did not make assumptions we
would have died out as a species long ago. In the film Atonement , director Joe Wright tells the
story of a young Briony who has chosen to tell a terrible lie, one that will forever disconnect her
from her sister, her happiness, and herself. This text begs the question of assumptions; why we
need to understand them, why we need to know when to admit they are wrong, and why we need
to be able to acceptthe consequences of them. The topic and overall meaning that this idea holds
conveys a message that resonates with the idea that assumptions are sometimes a major factor in
how individuals go about taking responsibilityfor themselves. Until an individual can take
responsibility for the actions resulting from their own assumed reality, their attempts to take
responsibility for themselves will ultimately fail.
If an individual s assumption is forced to fit into reality, that may give them the obligation and
personal responsibility to reshape reality to fit their assumptions. As a thirteen year old Briony was
a very curious girl, but she was interested more specifically in the nature of adults. There is a scene
that Briony observes, where Cecilia and Robbie are arguing next to a fountain, and then Cecilia
jumps into the fountain as Robbie watches. Although Briony watches the events out of curiosity,
she does not grasp the understanding of why the adults act the way they do,

Response To Failure
Failure is really just a part of life. From god, to love, to our own academic studies, we have all
failed at something before, and it sure made us feel upset, or some other negative feelings, but
along comes Angel Perez and Mandy Oaklander to help save the day from the sheer destruction
of our guilt to tell us to bounce back , and that it is okay to fail. Something quite often unheard of
would be positive responses to failure, making it look like it is no big deal, but a rather out of
proportion. Given both articles it is not hard to see that Perez does not expect perfection, not the
brightest light in the dark sky, but rather a lesson learned from failure, rather than punishment.
Oaklander on the other hand talks of building up resilience... Show more content on Helpwriting.net
...
What Oaklander believes is that resilience can be built, and that all it takes is simply for a failure
as a trigger event to get us going, putting up our natural mental defenses that act as a coping
mechanism, and of course with some resilience it can determine how well you will bounce back
from a triggering event considering it does not take much to trigger stress as Oaklander himself
says. It does not take a predator to trigger a stress response in modern humans (Oaklander).
Oaklander like Perez can see that we as humans are not the most durable of people and that
certain things can impact our lives a lot more than they should. From failing one simple
assignment to not being acknowledged by others it can lead to a recognized stress trigger
creating any residual feeling from the original stress event to have the same effect on the
individual as the first time it happened. To ever think that a simple thought makes people cower
and mentally impairs them is simply highly illogical when one thinks about it, but it shows how
much resilience an individual might lack. Of course, Oaklander believes that resilience can be
built up like someone would a fine tuned body with the most desirable human traits, meaning
peak athletic condition, and a mentality like a rock. Within the article, Oaklander states In an
interesting twist, scientists have learned that working the body s muscles makes people s minds
more resilient as well. ( Oaklander). Allowing the body to enter a prime condition gives for a
harder mentality as stated before as things no longer seem to become overwhelming, but obstacles
in a path, and of course with that level of confidence an obstacle may seem easier than breathing.
Resiliency is finally shown when the body is properly exercised. Resiliency from that point now is
finally no longer just a mental thing, but a physical one

A Worldview Is A Person s Framework Of Ideas Essay
A worldview is a person s framework of ideas that is used to interpret their view of reality. A
worldview is a mental construction that is constantly being built by factors like culture, religion,
language, beliefs, personal experiences, the historical context in which they exist in and their
interaction with society. It is important to note that humanity does not hold the same worldview
because it is a personal view of the world that only exists in the mind. This ultimately affects how
one behaves, lives and interacts with society. Pacific Islanders for instance, living in the Pacific
and in the diaspora, have continued to encounter contested boundaries because of the difference in
worldviews. A contested boundary is defined as the art of juggling two aspects of life. I will
discuss the notion of contested boundaries of spirituality, cultural values and traditional versus
contemporary. Struggling to balance these aspects can lead to depression, an identity crisis and
even suicide, and I will be acknowledging how the different obligations, of certain Pacific
Islanders, can be in conflict with each other and how these individuals or groups are expected to
fulfill their obligatory duties, yet struggle just to balance and maintain them. Pacific Islanders
accumulate many cultural values since the moment they are born. These cultural qualities
incorporate admiration, versatility, solidarity and so on and it is these qualities of those of Pacific

Ethical Issues With Animal Testing
More than 115 million animals are used each year for testing (Akhtar). The act of testing on live
animals for the purpose of scientific research is called vivisection. According to a nationwide
survey of biology educators commissioned by NAVS in 2014, the use of animals as dissection
specimens in biology classrooms remains a prevalent practice in the United States, with 84% of
pre college biology educators reporting the use of dissection as a teaching tool. The use of
vivisection is carried out in middle schools, high schools, and universities. Animals are also used in
testing for cosmetics, tox screenings, and xenotransplantation, a process of transplanting organs or
tissues between different species . Many creatures around the world are forced into a life in cage
where they obliged to endure painful tests. Along with the pain caused by scientists, many of the
drugs that prove to be successful in animals aren t in humans. Aside from all, animals do have the
right to not be harmed although the Animal Welfare Act doesn t provide much protection. Our
country s law refuses to find it necessary to use alternative methods which are also obtainable.
Animal testingshould be outlawed due to animal rights, ethical issues, alternative ways and its
unreliability.
First of all, testing on animals must be outlawed in order to protect the rights of animals. Their
rights are infringed by endless experimenting. We may not believe this but animals and humans are
alike in more than one way.

The State Of New Mexico Essay
The state of New Mexico defines murder in the first degree as the killing of one person by
another without a lawful justification or excuse. Any action resulting in death, which can be
proven to have been willful, deliberate and premeditated; committed during the commission or
attempt to commit a felony; or by an act so dangerous to the lives of others that it indicates a
depraved mind and disregard for human life, is a capital felony (NM Stat В§ 30 2 1). Currently,
capital felonies are subject to a sentence of life imprisonment, or a true life imprisonment
sentence which provides no option for release or parole (NM Stat В§ 31 18 14). However, from
1979 to 2009, New Mexico carried a harsher set of punishments for first degree murder; life in
prison with the possibility of parole, or the death penalty.
Terry Clark was the only prisoner on death row to be executed before the penalty repeal in 2009.
In 1987, a jury found Clark guilty after hearing gruesome testimony that he abducted, raped, and
shot his young victim three times in the head before he buried her body in a shallow grave on his
brother s ranch. Unsurprisingly, Clark filed an appeal with the New Mexico Supreme Court after
the lower court s ruling and sentencing. In State v. Clark, 772 P.2d 322 (1989), the court carefully
considered Clarks many claims of trial misconduct.
Clark originally entered a guilty plea after his defense counsel informed him that his death sentence

Baseball s Influence On American Culture
Baseball is often referred to as America s pastime and a symbol of American culture. Baseball
has long stood as an integral part of the American way of life. Yet, for nearly one hundred years
of its professional life a significant portion of the population was banned from participating in
baseball at the Major League level. Some of America s most talented ballplayers were forced to
play in leagues that provided little support or opportunity. Because of an unwritten rule, baseballs
hierarchy prevented African American men from playing on the same team as white men, even if
the African American men s talents far exceeded that of their white counterparts. Baseball s

conclusion of World War II. While many players in the Negro Leagues had just as much talent
as Major Leaguers, black players were never granted the same recognition as their white

blacks lived lives of difficulty. Seasons were very long in the Negro Leagues, often topping out
around 200 games. Unlike in the majors where teams would remain in the same city for three or
four days, Negro League teams usually found themselves in a new location for every game.
Teams had to travel in order to get by and some even ended up playing in Latin American in
order to earn more money. The average pay for a black player ranged from $125 to $300 a
month which when compared with white players was less than 50% of what the white players
made. Negro League teams were also smaller and players were expected to be versatile on the
field. It is sometimes argued that many black players exceeded white players in ability. Sadly, due
to lower attendance rates, black players often had to put on shows before their games just to attract
a crowd according to Tygiel in The Negro

Essay on America and the Great Depression
America and the Great Depression
1. Compare the ideas behind the protest movements of Huey Long and Upton Sinclair.
The Era of the Great Depression was one of both desperation and hope. Americans were desperate
for a change, desperate for anything to come along that may improve their situation, yet hopeful that
the light at the end of the tunnel was near. For many of those living in poverty during the 1930s, the
radical leftist movements seen throughout the country appeared to be alternatives to the sometimes
ineffective programs of FDR s New Deal. Two such programs, Huey Long s Share Our Wealth plan
and Upton Sinclair s End Poverty in California (EPIC) were fairly popular, mainly for their
appealing alternatives to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Long s program became quite popular nationally, at one point the Share Our Wealth Society
claimed to have nearly 4.7 million members. Such support only fueled Long s fire, aspirations for
the 1936 presidency. The threat Long presented to the Democrat s reign in congress was legitimate.
At one time, President Roosevelt named Long one of the two most dangerous men in America .
(Biles 123) Though his assassination in 1935 removed the threat of his possible candidacy, the
strong support and influence of his followers caused the Roosevelt administration to move slightly
more to the left.
Upton Sinclair, a former socialist and founder of the EPIC plan, registered with the Democratic
party in 1933 so he could run as a major party candidate in the 1934 California election for
governor. (Polenberg 120) Though he lost the election, EPIC supporters succeeded in gaining 30
seats in California legislature, which ultimately pushed the state governor to endorse New Deal
programs. (Biles 120) Sinclair, well known for a number of books he wrote (which often attacked
the evils of a capitalistic society ), based his EPIC plan on the idea of creating an economy based
on use rather than on profit. (Polenberg 120)
EPIC called for the seizure of idle land in California and its transformation into a network of

Hitler s Willing Executioners by Daniel Goldhagen
Not many historical works have achieved more success and have generated more heated debate
than Daniel Goldhagen s book Hitler s Willing Executioners. Goldhagen s thesis relies on the idea
that since medieval times, a specific kind of eliminationist anti Semitism had developed in
Germany. According to Goldhagen, the German population was already open to the idea of
eliminating the Jews. He also claims that when Hitler came to Power in 1933, rather than slowly
convincing the Germans to commit mass murder, he merely gave them the opportunity to do what
they have wanted to do for years. Goldhagen also inflated the number of people involved,
suggesting that hundreds of thousands were participating in the killing and that millions more
would have willingly joined in, given the opportunity. Despite the rejection of the book by many
German and non German historians, the German version of the book, published in August 1996,
sold very well. Eighty thousand copies of the German edition sold in the first month of the book s
release. By the time of Goldhagen s tour in September, three thousand copies were being sold every
single day. Facts like these show how important communication is with the public. Hitler s Willing
Executioners was successful in Germanybecause of the accessibility of the book to the German
population, the social context in which the book was produced, and the powerful marketing
campaign that preceded the book itself.
It would be hard to analyze the success of

Discrimination In Workplace
There are laws against discrimination and many work places are breaking them. Discrimination can
happen anywhere but it most happens in the workplace. People get discriminated against every day
because of either their race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, age, or disabilities. In 2014 there
were 88,778 discriminationin the work place cases. Out of the 88,778 cases there were 31,073 race
cases, 26,027 sex cases, 3,549 religion cases, 20,588 age cases, and 25,369 disability cases (Twenty
States With the Most Workplace Discrimination). Texas has the most amount of incidents of work
place discrimination. (Twenty States With the Most Workplace Discrimination) Someone can get

Even though there are numerous laws protecting discrimination workplaces are still violating those
laws. Some people are careless and inconsiderate about others that they do not even realize that they
are discriminating someone. No one should ever get discriminated against because of something
they cannot change. Getting discriminated against is not a good feeling at all it makes them upset,
angry and sometimes less than human. If someone feels they are getting discriminated against they
should report it immediately before it gets worse. Race discrimination is the number one type of
discrimination in America. Gender discrimination can happen to either men or women. Religion
discrimination often occurs when one does not respect ones religious practices or religious
clothing. Sexual orientation discrimination can occur to a person because of their sexual choices.
Age discrimination occurs when someone feels as if someone is not fit for a job because of his
or her age. Disability discrimination occurs when someone believes that an individual cannot
perform a task because he or she has a disability. All forms of discrimination need to stop in order
for the United States to be a better

Figurative Language And Similes In Fireflies, By Adam Young
Have you ever had any troubles sleeping at night? Some people might have an ibility to sleep, a
sleeping disorder called insomnia. But, for Adam Young, he had trouble sleeping at night, and yet,
still have a very colorful vivid dreams. In Fireflies , by Owl City, Adam Young is trying to show
his vivid dreams when he was young by using many figurative languages such as simile, metaphor,
hyperbole, personification, and repetition.
In the famous single, Fireflies , there are many uses of similes and metaphors to show his vivid
dreams when he was young. In stanza 6, Adam Young sang Cause I feel like such an insomniac .
This is an example of simile, Adam Young is comparing himself to a person who is regularly
unable to sleep. In the last stanza, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In stanza 6, Adam Young said I m far too tired to fall asleep . This is an example of a paradox,
because the word far too tired seeming contradiction may reveal an unexpected truth. In another
stanza, Adam Young sang awake when I m asleep . This is an example of an oxymoron, because
oxymoron is a combination of two words that appear to contradict each other, and by staying
awake when asleep is a contradictory between the two terms. The use of oxymoron and paradox
is shown throughout the lyric. The purpose is to show that he is awake when asleep at the same
time, this will give a clearer idea of him having a vivid dream when trying to

Essay On The Jilting Of Granny Weatherall
The Jilting of Granny Weatherall is a short story were a jaunty, cachectic, aged, dying women is
forced to contend with all her past failures and fears, self defining and societal. The thing that
made the story more thought provoking and difficult to follow is that it is told from a point of
view of Granny who in her illness is mentally aware at times and disordered in others causing her
to speak or inwardly express random, abrupt, past and present thoughts, and future desired
experiences which she openly shares with her doctor, priest, familymembers, God and her
subconscious self. Granny Weatherall who refuses to accept her current state of illness and
mortality, role, and loss of time to express herself to her beloved George or Hapsy which causes
her to relive her past and present experiences of being jilted which in return causes her denial....

This act left Granny alone to deal with the humiliation and scarlet mark of the jilting. This
feeling is important as this occured in an age where women were expected to marry and bear
children and work within the home. Although Granny did eventually marry, have a family and
find happiness within her marriage this experience with George caused her to place a larger
value on future experiences of desertion. As Granny Weatherall lie in her doctor bed Cornelia,
Granny s daughter, and the young doctor gives Granny a warning that her body is failing as
they try to get her to see that she doesn t have the strength and abilities that she once had but all
Granny can do is reflect on how she pulled through milk leg and double pneumonia (64) and
envisioning herself standing up on her feet when in fact her bones are felt loose, and floated
around in her skin and Doctor Harry is [floating] like a balloon around the foot of the bed (64)

The Sixth Sense
The Sixth Sense is a PG 13 horror film released on August 6, 1999 by director M. Night
Shyamalan. It talks about a boy name Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment) who is able to see and talk to
people from the dead and child psychiatrist Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) tries to help him.
Throughout the movie there were abundance of scenes that made the movie memorable for the
audience. One scene I found this intriguing was the funeral scene. There were numerous techniques
that were used during the scene which ties everything for the audience to understand who the
murderer was. Without analyzing the funeral scene, the audience would not have believed that Cole
could speak to the dead.
Cole was one of Malcolm patients and Cole could not find a person to ... Show more content on

This extreme close up is focused on the video tape of Kyra s death. This video tape is one of the
symbolism of the three minute part that unlocks the murder mystery of the Kyra. They did a
high angle shot showing the tape which in our book it says, a style of lighting emphasizing harsh
shafts and dramatic streaks of lights and darks. Often used in thrillers and melodramas. They also
had movements of Kyra s father to react to this. In the script they said, The father looks down in a
daze. He goes to open the jewelry box. His movements are slow and strained. He lifts the latch and
open the box (Shyamalan, The Sixth Sense Final Draft 106). After this extreme close up we
transition to a medium close up. At the start of the tape a medium close up is shown back again in
the film and this shows the reaction of Kyra s father when he was watching the video Cole gave
him. In order for this medium close up to stand out from the previous one, they need to use a flat
angle which means the camera is the same project as the subject. The flat angle is directly to Kyra
s father. We then go to the television, which contains an angle density. The television angle was a
perfect 90 degrees with terror sounds around and this signifies the immediate danger that is going to
occur throughout the video

When they defined the problem, they have to set the research objectives. The marketing research
has three types:1.Exporatory research 2. Descriptive research 3. Casual research
First the company has to lead an exploratory research. Explore what the exact problem is: this
includes the gathering of preliminary information that will help define the problem and suggest
hypotheses. After gathering the information from exploratory, the company needs to define another
objective, which is descriptive in this case that is to ascertain certain magnitudes demographic
information. Some research is casual that is to test a cause and effect relationship.
Developing the research plan for collecting information
The second step of the marketing research process calls for determining the information needed,
developing a plan for gathering if efficiently and presenting the plan to marketing management. The
plan outlines sources of existing data and explains the specific research approaches, contact
methods, sampling plans and instruments that researchers will use to gather new data (Phillip
Kotler: Principles of marketing)
Secondary and primary research
Secondary data exist of information that already exists somewhere, having been collected for
another purpose. It is a quick way to get information and it is cheaper than primary data. Although
it can not provide all the necessary data, so primary

U.s. Marine Corps And The Military
After watching this film for several times, a viewpoint comes into my mind that almost all of
people are not inborn soldiers, but it s quite clear that most of them could be soldiers through a
series of training in the army. Unlike a majority of jobs in our daily lives, soldiering could be
more complicated and it needs people to take a high level of risk in the war and even some
people sacrifice their lives in order to defend their countries rights and protect citizens safety.
Therefore, many people may have formed a false concept that only specific groups of people are
suitable for selecting as soldiers. In fact, anyone s son will do it and they can do it very well. In
the end of this film, most soldiers family members express that they are proud of their sons or
daughters. That s because their sons or daughters assume responsibility and make great
contributions to the society.
The storyline of this film is about the basic training in the military. This film s scenario is about the
U.S. Marine Corps. In this film, it shows us the details of recruiting soldiers and some procedures
about how to train these young people into soldiers and killers. In the beginning of this film
presents a picture of the Soviet Union soldiers and also tells us that these people would be the U.S.
soldiers, if their grandparents had immigrated to the United States. At the same time, their parents
would very proud of them because they think their sons or daughters serve the country and protect

The Principle Of Equity Within The World Of Doctrine, Not...
Equity is a source of law which is based on flexible principles to supplement the common law, and
thereby alleviating the harshness. Lord Scarman once described the principle of equity in National
Westminster Bank PLC v Morgan as a world of doctrine, not of neat and tidy rules which
emphasises its rigidity nature to provide its flexibility. As Alastair Hudson noted , many different
doctrines fit inside English equity which introduce a more systematic approach to the common law.
It is important to examine equity s historical development to recognize the root of how it was
formed and used, and how it still serves a purpose within the modern legal system.
When discussing the history of equity, it is imperative to go back to the 12th century where the
King and his courtiers would travel around the country to settle disputes and collect the citizen s
taxes. During this time, the King s Chancellor would advise the King and his Council on these
matters. Due to this, he became known as the King s conscience. Where the use of the common
law to settle a dispute proved to be unjustified, the Chancellor would provide a just remedy. In this
way, the King s common law became well founded, and the concept of equity was formed.
Common law suits were known to be inflexible, as the common law only provided one type of
remedy, damages, which was not always an adequate solution to every problem . Some litigants
grew dissatisfied with the system and petitioned to the King. However, all of

Power Relations In Lord Of The Flies Essay
Symbolism can represent a person, object, place, situation and action that gain more depth of
meaning in the context. This technique gives insight to the reader, symbolism is used in literature
as a device that not is to be taken literally.
Lord of the flies is one of the most engaging works of William Golding, the important theme of the
novel is the social power. These power relations are introduced in the novel in a form of symbols,
sometimes the symbols are introduced or used so efficiently, that most of the times are easy to
recognise them. Those power relations are introduced everywhere on the island and shown at
different levels through the novel. William Golding had an experience in war, and the novel is
placed in the time of WW2, in my opinion, this is the reason why the novel is very ... Show more

The aim of this essay is to investigate the kind of symbols that are used in the writing. To show
their similarities in a social power relation. In this essay, I would talk about main symbols that are
introduced in the novel.
The first and the main symbol in the novel is the conch shell. It was introduced in the first
chapter, which is called the sound of the shell . The conch was discovered by Ralph and Piggy at
the lagoon beach, creamy lay among the ferny weeds . Conch shell became a powerful symbol
of civilization and meetings We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They ll come
when they hear us the idea of having the meeting first came to Ralph. The shell was discovered
by Piggy, he has seen the shell earlier and suggested to Ralph to blow it, it made a lower sound,
which got everyone together. On the meeting place, boys are allowed to talk only when they have
the shell conch in their hands. Suggesting that the conch shell became more than a symbol, it was a
rule as in democracy and legitimacy powers. The

Success Is An Important Aspects Of Success
My ideal of success is setting and accomplishing goals you have set for yourself. Success can be
achieved through determination, staying focused, and overcoming obstacles. Determination is
a quality that makes you continue trying. I feel determination is an important aspect of
achieving success because staying determined to achieve a goal, gets you one step closer to
being successful in the goal you ve set for yourself. I was able to achieve my goal of becoming a
good basketball player, through determination. I started basketball when I was 12 years old,
with no experience. I was scared to get into something totally different than the usual sports I
played but wanted to achieve and be successful as a player and a teammate, so I started asking
for feedback on everything I did, like dribbling and shooting hoops. I made sure I was at every
practice and game with a positive attitude and ready to learn. I also asked for coaching assistance
and practiced once a week with a coach, in order to strive at being the best player I could be. A
few months went by and my routine of practicing every day, asking for feedback, and staying
determined to be better, paid off, I was not only a better player, but I also became the teams
MVP. Another aspect of being successful is staying focused. The word focused means to direct
time and attention to a limited number of issues. An example of someone who is staying focused,
in order to achieve being successful would be my 15 year old brother

  • 2. The Taum Sauk Upper Reservoir Failure Occurred On December The Taum Sauk Upper Reservoir Failure occurred on December 14, 2005, ironically on the same day the annual drill between Ameren and local emergency personnel was scheduled to be held. This failure released 1.5 billion gallons of water down Profitt Mountain and into Johnson Shut Ins State Park. This was an emergency event that impacted one family s home, and three vehicles traveling on Route N. The reservoir failure is classified as a man made event as it was caused by a failure of the over pumping protective systems which includes pressure transducers that monitor the water level within the upper reservoir and report the status of the water level to a remote monitoring center. (Auf der Heide, Erik. 1989) An emergency is generally personal in nature. A disaster is an event associated with the impact of a natural hazard, which leads to increased mortality, illness and/or injury, and destroys or disrupts livelihoods, affecting the people or an area such that they (and/or outsiders) perceive it as being exceptional and requiring external assistance for recovery (Cannon 1994, 29, fn.2). Finally, a catastrophe can be viewed as ...any disaster that overwhelms the ability of state, local, and volunteer agencies to adequately provide victims with such life sustaining mass care services as food, shelter, and medical assistance within the first 12 to 24 hours. (GAO, Disaster Management, 1993, p. 3). The Emergency Management Cycle The four phases of the emergency management cycle are Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery. Mitigation is the process of reducing the occurrence, minimizing impact of the event, and preventing an event from occurring. Mitigation steps can happen before and after an event. Preparedness is the ability to handle the event. This includes planning and preparations to help in response and rescue operations. • 3. Warner King Prince Research Paper Prince has always believed that machines have changed music into something that doesn t sound real ( The Artist Formerly Known, 1997). He is an original, unique, and independent artist. Prince may also be one of the most influential artists in the music industry because of his whimsical stage performance and his one of a kind genre. Princebegan in a musical family that ultimately led him to be a solo artist, and throughout his career he signed a contract with Warner Bros. where he had setbacks, accomplishments, and major success with records; he is still impacting musictoday with his unique genre. Prince was always interested in music and he followed in the footsteps of those around him. When Prince was five he became interested in music because his father was the head of a swing dance group and his mother sang for the group. Prince played many instruments, which led him to create his first band with his friend and bass player Cymone at the age of twelve. They called the band Grand Central which they later changed the name to Champagne. His band stayed together for about five years before it split up (Stambler, 1999). • 4. Expert Insanity In Court Cases Courts and the jurors serving in them need to be cautious when listening to expert testimony given, regarding the mental capabilities or sanity of an individual. This is because it is impossible to go into the mind of the defendant and know for a fact that they are mentally capable, which causes any assessment to be in part guesswork. Also the definition of what the judiciary has considered mentally insane has changed through time and in different legal systems. I argue that expert testimony in cases regarding mental sanity is not uniform and varies in different instances. As a society should be trying to make the definitions and assessment of sanity the uniform in all of the states and United States federal courts for persons to be tried... The A.L.I was much easier than the M Naughten standard because Instead of requiring a defendant to have no understanding of right and wrong, the A.L.I. standard requires that he lack a substantial capacity to understand the right from wrong, and expands the M Naughten rule to include an irresistible impulse component. Years later the Insanity Defense Reform Act of 1984 essentially lead to the A.L.I. test being discarded in favor of a new version which more closely resembled the M Naughten ruling. Under this ruling the defendant must show that their mental handicap is severe. Wasteful Gov t Spending on Education in 3rd Worlds National and international development is a human instinct and serves only one specific purpose; which is the advancement of humanity and specifically the betterment of the quality of life for everyone. The terminology development usually includes such areas as foreign aid, healthcare, equality, infrastructure, economics, human rights and educationas well as many others. International development differs compared to national development; it was created by governments and institutions after World War Two in order to concentrate on topics like easing poverty and to improve living conditions in destroyed countries, but more importantly in former colonies which were now free and to become part of a different and hopefully better world.... • 7. What Is The Theme Of Deception In Hamlet By Shakespeare Deception is an action driven with the motive to employ one purpose which can be to mislead another individual in order to gain knowledge, to get revenge, or to reveal a plan unknown to the public eye and keeping it that way for the dutiful well being of the Kingdom of Denmark. In the tragedy Hamlet by William Shakespeare, deception develops into the character trait that initiates the actions, heartbreak, and revenge driving this play. This attribute held by Hamletis the leading cause of this same flaw development in Ophelia, King Claudius, and many others in an attempt to reinforce the theme. This theme is one of heroism, but the deceptive notion each action reveals challenges the perception the reader has on each of the main characters.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These characters were furthering the play by continually revealing and shaving back the many layers of Hamlet to show the multitude of sides and angles one character can have in a story. Like night time to day and day to night time, each angle presents a new perspective. In this play Horatio, King Claudius, and Laeretes are foil characters to Hamlet. Horatio is calm and level headed, and he does not allow himself to be misguided. He stays true to himself the entire tragedy. Remaining loyal for the entirety of the play, Horatio contrast Hamlet. Since the first moments of his Uncle Claudius rule, Hamlet began his journey into a deceptive state of being. Accomplishing this by failing to acknowledge his Uncle s title. This brings into the light Hamlet s unloyalty to even persons of kin, this is also the reason King Claudius is a foil to Hamlet. He always is in need for something more and to achieve this he will stop at nothing. Hamlet is very charismatic in his approach to killing the king in the name of revenge, but does not successfully come face to face with the actions until the very last moments. Waiting the entirety of the novel, Hamlet finally seizes the moment to kill his Uncle Claudius. Making sure it is not a moment of repentance and it is an unmistaken moment on sin to ensure his fate, Hamlet kills his uncle following the moments of his mother s last breath. • 10. Antigone By Sophocles Antigone In Sophocles, Antigone begins with the stages of grief as Antigone mourns the loss of her two brothers, Polyneikes and Eteokles, who die simultaneously in face to face combat in Thebes. Eteokles dies with honor fighting for the Thebesians and is honored with rituals and a proper burial. The body of Polyneikes, who attempted to burn the city of Thebes, is left for the dogs and birds to savage. Thesbesian s law forbids anyone giving a traitor, like Polyneikes, a proper burial, for that itself is a crime punishable by death. Antigone is angered that Polyneikes is not going to receive a proper burial and is determined that she must honor him even if it means the end of her life. Antigone alone attempts to bury her brother, but is captured and imprisoned, at which point she decides to form a noose around her neck and end her life. Sophoclesleaves the reader to question whether Antigone s suicide is an act of heroism, a stand for the citizens of Thebes, or a selfish way of coping with personal trauma. Antigone sought assistance in burying her brother from her only family member alive, her sister, Ismene, who tries to reason with her. Ismene proclaims, Remember, we re women. How can we fight men? They re stronger (Sophocles 749). The physical statures of neither Polyneikes nor Antigone were not ever mentioned, but in general men typically weigh more and have a larger build than women. • 11. The Prologue And Part One Of The Book Nietzsche Whether the happening be good or bad, humans tend to rationalize the circumstance and make it an event that served a greater purpose. In Thus Spoke Zarathustra by Friedrich Nietzsche, Zarathustra describes this behavior, along with many others, as life denying as he was mainly concerned with ethics. The prologue tells the story of how Zarathustra went up a mountain and spent ten years there gaining wisdom; he then descends to share his wisdom but the people laugh at him and he comes to realize that they did not and would not take him seriously because they were too far gone with old beliefs. He also came to the conclusion that he did not want people who conform and do not think for themselves, or followers, but rather people who desire to go in the same direction he is going. Throughout the prologue and part one of the book Nietzsche is trying to teach those who can think for themselves about how to live well and without excuses. The prologue mainly consists of Zarathustra descending from the mountain back into the town and realizing that no one takes him seriously. Zarathustra is discouraged at first but then realizes that he was not targeting the right audience and begins again. He starts off by establishing an overman, who is someone who can affirm and embrace life completely without any excuses. Consecutively he establishes a last man, who is said to be someone who has no questions, no chaos, no creativity, and seeks comfort and security. His view of man is a cross ... • 12. Emile Durkheim Theory Of Suicide Traditionally, suicide was thought to be a purely individual decision but French sociologist Emile Durkheim recognized that the phenomenon had a social dimension. He believed in the influence of society on the individual and that if anything can explain that relation, it is suicide. His use of the data of suicide, not specific cases and reports, to study the societal trends reveals his true subject of study: society as a whole and its role in the individual experience. Durkheim uses the study of suicide via the quantitative methodological approach as a tool to study society as a broader whole. Suicide, to Durkheim, is an exaggerated form of ordinary practices, and they arise from comparable states of mind in people, with the only difference between daily and suicidal behavior being the chance of death (Durkheim 20 21). Durkheim spends the majority of the work dissecting the apparent motives for suicide (Durkheim 151) and observing the varieties of suicide, a feat made difficult by the inaccurate reporting and misunderstandings of investigators. Thus, to understand the types of suicide, we must reverse the order of our research for There can only be as many different types of suicide as there are differences in the causes from which they derive, (Durkheim 149). He says if they were all found to have the same essential characteristics, they would be grouped in one class but observations that we would need to have are more or less impossible obtain (Durkheim ... Additionally, the Paris terrorist attacks of November 2015 made migration policy even more of a priority for Luxembourg. Ignoring the issues will not solve the problem and Luxembourg clearly recognized that migration within the EU is something that they must resolve. The trace in literature and history from Plymouth and Virginia colonies through the Jeffersonian Enlightenment to the transcendentalists represented by Emerson and Hawthorne all begins with John Smith, whom had been granted by a charter from King James I reached Virginia in 1607. The settlers landed in what was Jamestown ready to begin the dangerous undertaking of surviving in a new environment. Essay On The Movie Whale Rider In the movie Whale Rider directed by Niki Caro, many important objects are used to foreshadow the later events involving protagonist Paikea Apirana, a young girl forbidden by tradition to become the chief of her tribe. Although the outcome of the film seems quite unprecedented at first, Director Caro conceals many clues regarding the ending for the audience to discover. She does this through the use of camera angles, dialogue and props, notably through the use of the rope, the Taiaha and the Rei Puta. Furthermore, while making links to certain scenes in the movie, Niki Caro has hidden life lessons and morals regarding discrimination, prejudice and leadership that the audience can closely relate to and learn from. Firstly, an important object in Whale Rider is the Rope. It is used to repair a motor, and is used by Koro to represent the tribe s ancestors. This is shown in the two shot of Koro and Paikea repairing the motor, and Koro s dialogue tells Paikea that each one of those threads is one of your ancestors, all joined together and strong . The rope is also important as it foreshadows Paikea becoming the Chief of the tribe. The rope is said by Koro to symbolise the ancestry and community of the people of Whangara, but Koro breaks that wire, thus breaking the community. However, Paikea mends the rope that Koro broke, foreshadowing the mending of the community that can be seen at the end of the movie. In the film Atonement , director Joe Wright tells the story of a young Briony who has chosen to tell a terrible lie, one that will forever disconnect her from her sister, her happiness, and herself. This text begs the question of assumptions; why we need to understand them, why we need to know when to admit they are wrong, and why we need to be able to acceptthe consequences of them. The topic and overall meaning that this idea holds conveys a message that resonates with the idea that assumptions are sometimes a major factor in how individuals go about taking responsibilityfor themselves. Until an individual can take responsibility for the actions resulting from their own assumed reality, their attempts to take responsibility for themselves will ultimately fail. If an individual s assumption is forced to fit into reality, that may give them the obligation and personal responsibility to reshape reality to fit their assumptions. As a thirteen year old Briony was a very curious girl, but she was interested more specifically in the nature of adults. There is a scene that Briony observes, where Cecilia and Robbie are arguing next to a fountain, and then Cecilia jumps into the fountain as Robbie watches. Something quite often unheard of would be positive responses to failure, making it look like it is no big deal, but a rather out of proportion. Oaklander on the other hand talks of building up resilience... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What Oaklander believes is that resilience can be built, and that all it takes is simply for a failure as a trigger event to get us going, putting up our natural mental defenses that act as a coping mechanism, and of course with some resilience it can determine how well you will bounce back from a triggering event considering it does not take much to trigger stress as Oaklander himself says. It does not take a predator to trigger a stress response in modern humans (Oaklander). Oaklander like Perez can see that we as humans are not the most durable of people and that certain things can impact our lives a lot more than they should. From failing one simple assignment to not being acknowledged by others it can lead to a recognized stress trigger creating any residual feeling from the original stress event to have the same effect on the individual as the first time it happened. To ever think that a simple thought makes people cower and mentally impairs them is simply highly illogical when one thinks about it, but it shows how much resilience an individual might lack. Of course, Oaklander believes that resilience can be built up like someone would a fine tuned body with the most desirable human traits, meaning peak athletic condition, and a mentality like a rock. Within the article, Oaklander states In an interesting twist, scientists have learned that working the body s muscles makes people s minds more resilient as well. ( Oaklander). Allowing the body to enter a prime condition gives for a harder mentality as stated before as things no longer seem to become overwhelming, but obstacles in a path, and of course with that level of confidence an obstacle may seem easier than breathing. A worldview is a mental construction that is constantly being built by factors like culture, religion, language, beliefs, personal experiences, the historical context in which they exist in and their interaction with society. It is important to note that humanity does not hold the same worldview because it is a personal view of the world that only exists in the mind. This ultimately affects how one behaves, lives and interacts with society. Pacific Islanders for instance, living in the Pacific and in the diaspora, have continued to encounter contested boundaries because of the difference in worldviews. A contested boundary is defined as the art of juggling two aspects of life. I will discuss the notion of contested boundaries of spirituality, cultural values and traditional versus contemporary. • 39. Baseball s Influence On American Culture Baseball is often referred to as America s pastime and a symbol of American culture. Baseball has long stood as an integral part of the American way of life. Yet, for nearly one hundred years of its professional life a significant portion of the population was banned from participating in baseball at the Major League level. Some of America s most talented ballplayers were forced to play in leagues that provided little support or opportunity. Because of an unwritten rule, baseballs hierarchy prevented African American men from playing on the same team as white men, even if the African American men s talents far exceeded that of their white counterparts. Baseball s eventual integration would change the face of American culture and upend... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Tygiel pointed out, the Negro Leagues profits did not even begin to pick up until after the conclusion of World War II. While many players in the Negro Leagues had just as much talent as Major Leaguers, black players were never granted the same recognition as their white counterparts. While white players were able to live fairly comfortable lifes as ballplayers, blacks lived lives of difficulty. Seasons were very long in the Negro Leagues, often topping out around 200 games. Unlike in the majors where teams would remain in the same city for three or four days, Negro League teams usually found themselves in a new location for every game. Teams had to travel in order to get by and some even ended up playing in Latin American in order to earn more money. The average pay for a black player ranged from $125 to $300 a month which when compared with white players was less than 50% of what the white players made. Negro League teams were also smaller and players were expected to be versatile on the field. It is sometimes argued that many black players exceeded white players in ability. Sadly, due to lower attendance rates, black players often had to put on shows before their games just to attract a crowd according to Tygiel in The Negro ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Essay on America and the Great Depression America and the Great Depression 1. Compare the ideas behind the protest movements of Huey Long and Upton Sinclair. The Era of the Great Depression was one of both desperation and hope. Americans were desperate for a change, desperate for anything to come along that may improve their situation, yet hopeful that the light at the end of the tunnel was near. For many of those living in poverty during the 1930s, the radical leftist movements seen throughout the country appeared to be alternatives to the sometimes ineffective programs of FDR s New Deal. Two such programs, Huey Long s Share Our Wealth plan and Upton Sinclair s End Poverty in California (EPIC) were fairly popular, mainly for their appealing alternatives to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Long s program became quite popular nationally, at one point the Share Our Wealth Society claimed to have nearly 4.7 million members. Such support only fueled Long s fire, aspirations for the 1936 presidency. The threat Long presented to the Democrat s reign in congress was legitimate. At one time, President Roosevelt named Long one of the two most dangerous men in America . (Biles 123) Though his assassination in 1935 removed the threat of his possible candidacy, the strong support and influence of his followers caused the Roosevelt administration to move slightly more to the left. Upton Sinclair, a former socialist and founder of the EPIC plan, registered with the Democratic party in 1933 so he could run as a major party candidate in the 1934 California election for governor. (Polenberg 120) Though he lost the election, EPIC supporters succeeded in gaining 30 seats in California legislature, which ultimately pushed the state governor to endorse New Deal programs. (Biles 120) Sinclair, well known for a number of books he wrote (which often attacked the evils of a capitalistic society ), based his EPIC plan on the idea of creating an economy based on use rather than on profit. (Polenberg 120) EPIC called for the seizure of idle land in California and its transformation into a network of cooperatives to be run and managed by those without jobs. These colonies would be given land to cultivate, as well as factories and production plants to work ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Hitler s Willing Executioners by Daniel Goldhagen Not many historical works have achieved more success and have generated more heated debate than Daniel Goldhagen s book Hitler s Willing Executioners. Goldhagen s thesis relies on the idea that since medieval times, a specific kind of eliminationist anti Semitism had developed in Germany. According to Goldhagen, the German population was already open to the idea of eliminating the Jews. He also claims that when Hitler came to Power in 1933, rather than slowly convincing the Germans to commit mass murder, he merely gave them the opportunity to do what they have wanted to do for years. Goldhagen also inflated the number of people involved, suggesting that hundreds of thousands were participating in the killing and that millions more would have willingly joined in, given the opportunity. Despite the rejection of the book by many German and non German historians, the German version of the book, published in August 1996, sold very well. Eighty thousand copies of the German edition sold in the first month of the book s release. By the time of Goldhagen s tour in September, three thousand copies were being sold every single day. Facts like these show how important communication is with the public. Hitler s Willing Executioners was successful in Germanybecause of the accessibility of the book to the German population, the social context in which the book was produced, and the powerful marketing campaign that preceded the book itself. It talks about a boy name Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment) who is able to see and talk to people from the dead and child psychiatrist Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) tries to help him. Throughout the movie there were abundance of scenes that made the movie memorable for the audience. One scene I found this intriguing was the funeral scene. There were numerous techniques that were used during the scene which ties everything for the audience to understand who the murderer was. This video tape is one of the symbolism of the three minute part that unlocks the murder mystery of the Kyra. They did a high angle shot showing the tape which in our book it says, a style of lighting emphasizing harsh shafts and dramatic streaks of lights and darks. Often used in thrillers and melodramas. They also had movements of Kyra s father to react to this. In the script they said, The father looks down in a daze. He goes to open the jewelry box. His movements are slow and strained. He lifts the latch and open the box (Shyamalan, The Sixth Sense Final Draft 106). After this extreme close up we transition to a medium close up. At the start of the tape a medium close up is shown back again in the film and this shows the reaction of Kyra s father when he was watching the video Cole gave him. In order for this medium close up to stand out from the previous one, they need to use a flat angle which means the camera is the same project as the subject. The flat angle is directly to Kyra s father. We then go to the television, which contains an angle density. The television angle was a perfect 90 degrees with terror sounds around and this signifies the immediate danger that is going to occur throughout the video ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Marine Corps And The Military After watching this film for several times, a viewpoint comes into my mind that almost all of people are not inborn soldiers, but it s quite clear that most of them could be soldiers through a series of training in the army. Unlike a majority of jobs in our daily lives, soldiering could be more complicated and it needs people to take a high level of risk in the war and even some people sacrifice their lives in order to defend their countries rights and protect citizens safety. Therefore, many people may have formed a false concept that only specific groups of people are suitable for selecting as soldiers. In fact, anyone s son will do it and they can do it very well. In the end of this film, most soldiers family members express that they are proud of their sons or daughters. That s because their sons or daughters assume responsibility and make great contributions to the society. The storyline of this film is about the basic training in the military. This film s scenario is about the U.S. Marine Corps. In this film, it shows us the details of recruiting soldiers and some procedures about how to train these young people into soldiers and killers. • 49. The Principle Of Equity Within The World Of Doctrine, Not... Equity is a source of law which is based on flexible principles to supplement the common law, and thereby alleviating the harshness. Lord Scarman once described the principle of equity in National Westminster Bank PLC v Morgan as a world of doctrine, not of neat and tidy rules which emphasises its rigidity nature to provide its flexibility. As Alastair Hudson noted , many different doctrines fit inside English equity which introduce a more systematic approach to the common law. It is important to examine equity s historical development to recognize the root of how it was formed and used, and how it still serves a purpose within the modern legal system. When discussing the history of equity, it is imperative to go back to the 12th century where the King and his courtiers would travel around the country to settle disputes and collect the citizen s taxes. During this time, the King s Chancellor would advise the King and his Council on these matters. Due to this, he became known as the King s conscience. Where the use of the common law to settle a dispute proved to be unjustified, the Chancellor would provide a just remedy. In this way, the King s common law became well founded, and the concept of equity was formed. Common law suits were known to be inflexible, as the common law only provided one type of remedy, damages, which was not always an adequate solution to every problem . Some litigants grew dissatisfied with the system and petitioned to the King. However, all of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 51. Success Is An Important Aspects Of Success My ideal of success is setting and accomplishing goals you have set for yourself. Success can be achieved through determination, staying focused, and overcoming obstacles. Determination is a quality that makes you continue trying. I feel determination is an important aspect of achieving success because staying determined to achieve a goal, gets you one step closer to being successful in the goal you ve set for yourself. I was able to achieve my goal of becoming a good basketball player, through determination. I started basketball when I was 12 years old, with no experience. I was scared to get into something totally different than the usual sports I played but wanted to achieve and be successful as a player and a teammate, so I started asking for feedback on everything I did, like dribbling and shooting hoops. I made sure I was at every practice and game with a positive attitude and ready to learn. I also asked for coaching assistance and practiced once a week with a coach, in order to strive at being the best player I could be. A few months went by and my routine of practicing every day, asking for feedback, and staying determined to be better, paid off, I was not only a better player, but I also became the teams MVP. Another aspect of being successful is staying focused. The word focused means to direct time and attention to a limited number of issues.
