How Did Buddy Bolden Influence African American
Music is a simple part within everyone s lives; whether you re young or old, black or white, music
has a place within your heart. Music is a diverse world within itself, including many different genres
like jazz, pop, rock, classical, etc. Jazz is the only music genre that Americans themselves invented.
African Americanculture is where this musicstarted, though. A very influential African American
character in our history is Buddy Bolden. He was an enormous influence on the jazzcultures in
American history. Buddy Bolden is also the first known person to ever play jazz music, crediting
him as the original creator.
Charles Joseph Buddy Bolden was born September 6th, 1877 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He
was born to Westmore Bolden and Alice nГ©e Harris. His father passed away when Charles was
only 6 years old. He grew up to play the cornet and the ragtime style of Jass , which later became
known as Jazz. Bolden was an avid cornet player and enjoyed experimenting with different
playing styles within his music. He wrote his own song, which is labeled now as Buddy Bolden
Blues , but was originally called Funky Butt back in his time. This song was considered extremely
offensive to some people, as the lyrics weren t the nicest. He enjoyed playing in this new style of
music labeled as blues ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

of the Big Four which was a march style of writing music. It is composed with a syncopated
rhythm for the bass drum and is widely used today for the same jazz and march purposes. The

Examining the Anti-Immigration Policies Essay
Examining the Anti Immigration Policies
United States immigration policies are designed as deterrents to immigration into the United States.
Frankly, their message has always been Stay out! Recently, California policies have taken a harsher
stab at immigration, namely Mexican immigrants that constitute the largest Latin American
minority in the United States. This paper intends to examine these policies, the effects they have had
on the Mexican population in California, and the connection they have to the anti immigrant
sentiment felt throughout the country.
First, though, looking closely at anti immigrant sentiment in America and policies that have been
enacted in the past by the U.S. are necessary to the understanding of the ... Show more content on

During World War II, the U.S. and Mexico reached an agreement in which a massive number of
Mexicans would be transported to America as temporary workers in agriculture because of the
anticipated worker shortage created by the war. (6) Of all the labor used in production throughout
the first half of the century, 75 percent is believed to be Mexican. (7) It is obvious then that since
the beginning of the century, the United States has been a source of employment for Mexicans out
of work and it is this attitude which has created the incentive for Mexican migration during the
latter half of the century.
Anti immigrant sentiments felt in America have much to do with this attitude. The fact is that most
Mexicans immigrate to this country in search of employment and of a better life for their children,
as do most other immigrants into the U.S . This is seen as an economic threat by many Americans
because of the large number of Mexicans residing in the United States: 62 percent of the entire
Hispanic population of America as of 1988.(8)
California, which is home to the largest Mexican population in the U.S., has vigorously expresses
its discontent with the current status of immigration. Pete Wilson, governor of California and an
anti immigrant proponent, claims that the large numbers of immigrants settling in California are
reeking havoc on its economy. According to him, Los Angeles alone is inhabited by

Essay About Playing Football
Playing football has had the most impact on the development of my character. I started playing
football when I was 5 years old. Playing football has taught me many valuable lessons. While
playing football, I have better understood the values of hard work. Football taught me that the
only way to succeed in something is by working harder than anyone else. Football has also taught
me that when working with a team, everybody has an important role and if one person slacks off it
hurts the entire team. There is no I in team and teamwork is a valuable life lesson. Whenever
teammates are focused on individual accomplishments, instead of the team s success, the team as a
whole does not perform as well. I have learned through this that when you... Show more content on

Apart from teaching them about the game of football, I served as a good role model toward their
work ethic. I made sure to always give my best during practices and workouts because I knew the
younger kids would see me trying my best and it would push them to do their best. In track, I
was the only upperclassman long distance runner during my junior year. While the track
coaches were busy with the short distance runners and field events, they trusted me to watch
over and teach the JV runners. I made sure that all of the kids would do the complete running
workout. I made sure to be a good example for hard work in track also. I would push myself as
hard as I could every day in order to instill a good work ethic into the kids. By improving my
running times every week, the kids learned that the only way to succeed is through pushing
themselves as hard as they can. I feel a great sense of pride and enjoyment when I watch the kids
improve in the sports I helped them with. My goal when leading was not only to help the kids be
the best they can be in their sport but more importantly teach them life lessons that will help them
throughout their life. Mentoring these kids showed me that leading by example is the best way to
be a good leader.

It was late evening when Humbert parked in front of the house. The real estate agent was waiting
for him on the lawn. Humbert got out of his car and walked over to the man. The dry ground
crunched as Humbert stepped on it. He also noticed that all the crickets sounded far away. The
whole place seemed kind of off and different than the rest of the nice town he had just driven
through.
Hello, I m Humbert Smith, he introduced himself to the real estate agent. Humbert glanced down at
the agent s name tag. In sloppy handwriting was written: Adam Chadwick. He was a bald,
overweight man with a red, sweaty face. He didn t strike Humbert as a very likable person.

A few minutes later, as Humbert was growing a little impatient, a loud thump echoed throughout the
abandoned house.
Are you okay? Humbert called out to the darkness. There was no answer. He frowned and
decided to go look for the man in case he was in trouble. Humbert reached into his suit pocket and
took out his phone. He turned it on and put the brightness all the way up to one hundred percent.
He walked forwards through the doorway which Adam had gone. Every step he took creaked
loudly in the silence.
There are a lot of spiderwebs, aren t there, Humbert said to himself, shining the light around the
walls of the hallway. This house was old, but were there really this many spiders? Humbert found
a door that had recently been opened judging by the lack of dust on the handle. The door squeaked
open and Humbert shone the light from his phone inside. He was greeted with a horrible sight.
The room was huge; the biggest room in the house. The walls were draped with webs. Everywhere,
like giant sheets covering the room. There were thousands of bugs stuck inside of the layers of
webbing. That was disgusting in itself but what really horrified Humbert was something much
worse.
A giant spider was standing at the other end of the room. It was dark brown and was about the size
of Humbert s car. The arachnid clacked its mandibles and scuttled over to something. It was now
standing over a large bundle of webbing. The

Examples Of Functionalism In Pay It Forward
The film Pay it forward depicts a 7th grade boy, Trevor, who is given an assignment from a
social studies teacher. The assignment is to create a way to make the world a better place in
which Trevor comes up with paying it forward. To pay I forward Trevor helps one person and
challenges them to help 3 more people eventually getting everyone who helps others challenge
someone else to pay it forward. Through his mothers alcoholism and his teachers support Trevor
helps people throughout his state to another pay it forward. The film Pay it forward represents
sociological perspectives such as Functionalism, conflict perspective, and symbolic interactionism.
Pay it forward represents functionalism, the approach that emphasizes the contributions made by
each part of society to keep it functioning smoothly, in each characters lifestyle and background.
Society uses functionalism to understand what they are doing themselves. We depend on an
overall consensus of beliefs and values, mechanical solidarity, to give our lives its value. In the
dramaturgy, Arlene is a perfect example of someone using mechanical solidarity working a
degrading job also allowing sexism to be a part of what values she has for herself. Society also is
dependent on the specialization of roles, organic solidarity. The 7th graders not believing they can

her garage that Trevor brought home to pay it forward. Arlene threatened the man with a gun and
even called him names because she was clueless on his intentions and society has told her it is not
normal for someone to randomly come fix your car. Also the depiction shows social conflict with
the homeless/alcohol and drug abusers, being set apart and unassociated with

How Did Jack Discredit Ralph From Lord Of The Flies
Jack is trying to discredit Ralph because Ralph said that we d hide. Even Jack ud hide they are
talking about the beast and that all of them would hide from the beast, no one on the island is
brave enough to fight the beast. Example 1 of Jack trying to discredit Ralph and get the other
boys to not like Ralph by saying and the next is that Ralph said my hunters are no good (126)
and Ralph disagrees with that. Jack is trying to get most of the boys to change their opinion
about Ralph. Another way Jack discredits Ralph is that Jack and his followers are going to steal
Ralphs firewood because Jack and his hunters killed a mother sow and need to cook the meat
they just killed. Jack said We ll raid them and take the fire. .They are wanting to cook the meat.
Toward the beginning of the meeting Jack called a meeting with the conch. Jack discredits Ralph
by getting all boys more concerned about the beast and hunting it than be more concerned about
the signal fire and getting rescued. Ralph says So we can t have a signal fire....We re beaten. .

Sacrifice In Othello
Within the Catholic church, sacrifice is notably perceived as one of the most well regarded acts.
From the Virgin Mary sacrificing her dignity, to the Lord sacrificing his life upon the Cross,
sacrifice reigns as a significant theme throughout the religious doctrine. The Bible, as a piece of
Literature, has transcended profound influence with an emphasis on sacrificeupon various other
works of European literature, particularly in William Shakespeares pieces. In William Shakespeare
s, Othello, Shakespeare astutely elaborates upon how Desdemona s desperate sacrifices to remain
submissive to Othello s pride prove her to be an angelic, virtuous woman of society. Initially,
Desdemona sacrificed her dignity. She became betrothed to Othello, creating aggravated
controversy, due to the fact... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In contrast, women who boldly project themselves receive portrayals such as indecent and
mockable. For example, Bianca undeniably found herself attracted to Cassio. She frequently
initiated flirting, which dejectedly turned Cassio off. In Shakespeare s Era, men exclusively
approached women, leading Iago and Cassio to coarsely ridicule her. Cassio even crassly
remarked to her, What do you mean by this haunting of me? Bianca is a foil to Desdemona,
because she blatantly defied the gender roles of society. Wistfully, in return, she met rejection by
men for being confident. Desdemona feared becoming outcasted, alas, she saved the extroversion
for her male counterparts. Regrettably, events only take a turn for the worst. Desdemona sacrifices
her own life. Othello rapidly spirals into insanity, and Iago accomplishes the final step of his
gruesome plan: to kill Desdemona. As Desdemona is being brutally murdered, she displays signs of
sympathy towards Othello. She has now fully convinced herself by even doing the slightest acts,
such as observing another man s refinery, she has provided Othello with substantial ammunition to
deduce that she

Persuasive Essay On Aging Out
According to the National Foster Youth institute, More than 23,000 children age out of the US
foster care system every year. () Aging out is the process of a teens transitioning from the legal
control of the foster care system, to independent living. Youth aging out of foster care should be
given an extension on foster careservices after the age of 18, because it provides a stable home for
teens, it increases the amount of college graduates and it provides healthcare for those in need.
By providing a secure and stable home for teens , it teaches them responsibility and further equips
them with stability in overall life decreasing homelessness rates. Extending foster care services
supplies former foster children with stable homes if they are in need. According to Foster Focus
Magazine, 65% of youth leaving foster care need immediate housing upon discharge () Housing
after foster care is an immediate issue that comes with aging out. Over 50% of desperate former
foster youth are searching for a home to begin their life independently. Statistics show that, many
foster youth are placed in homes with complete strangers that sometimes are just as dysfunctional, if
not more, than the homes they were removed from. () Unfortunately there are children in foster
care that often get bounced from home to home never really knowing when they are safely

In Time Stereotyping
Stereotyping can lead to bias, prejudice, and discrimination, sometimes causing exclusion of
groups, or oppression, often which are minorities. They are given specific characteristics to fit into,
which they often do not. Stereotyping happens all over the world, more specifically in America.
They create a facade of a preeminent characteristic. They can have dire consequences, become
emotionally damaging attacks, which often results in hurting many people mentally and even
physically. This stereotyping shown In the film In Time, by Andrew Niccol. For instance, Sylvia, a
rich woman from the more upscaled part of the country, has acquainted herself with Will Salas, a
poor man from the ghetto. In a society where time is literally money, and once one runs out, they...

This evidence connects to the social criticism of the dangers of stereotyping because Will assumes
that since the rich have money, they mustn t have worked for it. He think that if people have
money, they must have stole it from the poor, or eared it a dishonourable way. The director uses
repetition to show this point, because even though he meets may wealthier people who have not
stolen, he still has this negative stereotype. Though we know that may of the richer characters
probably earned their money by working for it, the less wealthy automatically assume that since
they have more, they think they are better than the rest of the people, and they give no regards to
people poorer than themselves. Andrew Niccol uses these author tools to strongly show the dangers
that stereotyping can have on us. In Time By Andrew niccol shows a criticism towards the dangers
of stereotyping, which can convey a universally believed, false facade towards a certain group. The
dangers of stereotyping are shown throughout the film, In Time, by using juxtaposition and point of
view, to show the differences of the two lives that the characters had, and show that they were

an individual must stay strong during times of hardship and doubt, focus on their own priorities,
and to not get peer pressured into doing something that isn t their passion.
One way to preserve, protect, and grow one s passion is to stay strong during times of hardship

Specifically in this reaction the limiting reagent is Calcium Chloride, CaCl2 and the factor that
will be changed periodically in this reaction is the amount in grams of the Sodium Carbonate and
Calcium Chloride and if the experiment is right, as the mass of the limiting reagent Calcium

obedience. The assessments will mirror the views and behavior of manager, which in turn can
project an image of a confident, well managed business. Democracy is another style that inspires
staffs to partake in democratic management style on behalf of the business decisions. IKEA
makes sure that their staff feedbacks and suggestions are taken into consideration and that the
managers can clearly describe viewpoints, which helps their staffs to work efficiently. The third
style is laissez Faire; this kind of leadership is when employees get to relax because too much
pressure can lead to decline in efficiency. Finally, IKEA follows paternalistic leadership style,
which is attentive to worker requirements and opinions. Here the managers are concerned about
worker contentment and act like a father figure, they discuss their worker s problems and also listen
to their opinions and make decisions that best suit the

American Anime Censorship
Japan and its people is open minded to many thing which has led to very bizarre actions such as
cartoon porn and hentai being able to be purchased in bookstores and convenience stores
throughout the country. This show how censorship and cartoons are treated compared to America.
In America cartoons are considered childish but in Japan cartoon can be viewed by everyone and
to all types of people. Due to Japanese animationsuccess to appeal to huge audiences around the

During my time at USC, I have strived to connect with both prospective and current students. While
working with the Honors College to develop and help lead the Honors Ambassadors program, I
have been able to impact prospective students through lending them advice and sharing my own
experiences. As a part of this program, I present information sessions to visiting students in addition
to attending Admitted Students Day, alumni receptions, and other events to foster connections with
prospective students. Several of these students remained in contact after they decided to attend
USC and have reached out to say that the opportunity to form a personal connection with a current

Diabetes Research Paper
This disease has been steadily increasing in the United States over the past decade. It affects about
24 million people in American over the age of 20. Diabetes is ranked 7th among the leading
causes of death in the United States. It can also contribute to the development of other fatal diseases
such as heart diseaseand kidney failure.
Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by increased blood glucose concentration
and disordered insulin metabolism. People who have diabetes are unable to produce sufficient
insulin or use insulin effectively. In someone without diabetes, insulin secretions rise after food is

The Effect Of Heat On Temperature On Heat
Introduction The feeling of warmth is a universal feeling that is caused due to heat. Heat is the
transfer of thermal energy of a hotter substance to a cooler substance. Thermal energy happens to
be the sum of potential energy and kinetic energy of the particles of any substance. Every object on
their own has a limit to how much heatthey can receive to raise the temperature of one gram by one
degree, this limit is known as specific heat capacitywhich would be measured in J/KgВєC. To
calculate the thermal energytransferred during an interaction the mass(m), the change in
temperature T(ВєC), and the specific heat capacity(c) is needed to complete the equation.

Out of the three selected metal samples (Copper, lead and aluminum), an educated guess would
believe that copper should change the most in temperature due to it being known to be very
conductive. Aluminum would be the sample that has the least change in number considering the
fact that aluminum sheets is used all the time in ovens for baking and due to process of elimination
lead should be in the middle of which sample will the most change in temperature the most.
Procedure
Measure the mass of one of the metal samples.
Place the metal sample in the 300 ml beaker
Fill the 300 ml beaker with water (150 ml) and begin heating up to the boiling point on the hot plate
(medium setting).
Measure mass of the inner container of the calorimeter with stirrer.
Fill the calorimeter with about 100 ml of tap water.
Repeat mass measurements for the calorimeter filled with water.
Place the calorimeter in the shield. Measure the temperature of water in the calorimeter. Check the
thermometer reading after 2 3 minutes.
Wait until the water has been boiling for about two minutes so you can be sure that the metal
reaches the same temperature as the boiling water.
Use the forceps to transfer the metal sample quickly from the beaker with boiling water into the

Comparing Thank You Ma Am And The Road Not Taken
There will be a time when we must choose between what is easy and what is right (J.K. Rowling,
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire). Making the right choice can be difficult. Sometimes the
circumstances can be challenging to overcome. Maybe people will judge you because your choice
went against the social norm. It is because of this that doing the right thing takes courage. People
can get this courage from many different places. In the commentary Doing the Right Thing by Rick
Reilly, the short story Thank You, Ma am by Langston Hughes, and the poem The Road
Not Taken
by Robert Frost the characters all found their courage from their pasts, role models, and themselfs.

People who inspire them to do the right thing no matter the circumstances. Another place the
characters in Doing the Right Thing, Thank You Ma am, and The Road Not Taken found
courage was from role models. This is shown the most in the text The Road Not Taken. When
the football players had the option to steal they get the courage to pay for the items from their
parents and family members. If there s one one thing I ve learned about parenting it s that the
best gift you can give your kid is someone they d hate to disappoint. (Reilly 23) and These four
young men had that someone when it mattered most. For Biondi, it was his mother. For
Gallimore, it was his whole family, who now call him Honest Abe. For James, it was his father.
(Reilly 24). These quotes show that these four boys all had people that they looked up to that
taught them wrong from right. So when the time came to decide between wrong and right, they
found courage from these role models to do the right thing. In Thank You Ma am Rodger has
the choice to run from Mrs. Jones, but instead he decides to stay and eat dinner with her. I think
Rodger found the courage to do this from, Mrs. Jones, who became a role model to to him. You
ought to be my son. I would teach you right from wrong. (Hughes 15). This quote shows that
Mrs. Jones took Rodger in and decided to help guide him and his decisions. Well, you didn t
have to snatch my pocketbook to get some suede shoes, said Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones.
You could of asked me. (Hughes 30). This quote shows that Mrs. Jones teaches Rodger the
decision he should ve made under the circumstances he was in. It is because Mrs. Jones modeled
for Rodger the difference between right and wrong that he found the courage to stay with Mrs.
Jones. In The Road Not Taken the travelerfound the courage to take the right road from from other
people that also chose to take the road less traveled by. Though as for

The Differences Between Civil Litigation Procedure And...
The Differences between Civil Litigation Procedures and Criminal Litigation Procedures:
Because the public has suffered as a result of a crime committed by an individual or group
breaking the law, the United States brings criminal action and they are represented in court by a
public official who is known as, as a district attorney, public prosecutor, or United States Attorney.
The jurisdiction of each court affects the types of crimes that are presented there. Courts that have
limited jurisdiction prosecute lesser crimes (misdemeanors) and courts of general jurisdiction try
more serious offenses (felonies). In civil actions an individual or a group has caused harm to
another and they go to court to seek compensation for the harm caused. The injured party is called
the plaintiff and they ask the court to grant damages in the form of a monetary payment. Some
jurisdictions allow for juryto hear the trial. If neither party requests a jury, the judge renders a
judgment after hearing both sides. In civil actions, the party who brings in action must present a
preponderance of evidence.
Steps in a Criminal Procedure:
Arrest: An individual files a complaint with law enforcement, the judge signs the warrant and law
enforcement can then make an arrest. An officer can make an arrest if there is probable cause and
a grand jury must be convened to determine whether to charge or indict the alleged criminal
perpetrator.
Bail: After the accused is taken into custody, the court may

Case Study Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
My diagnosis for Eleanor is pelvic floor dysfunction. The symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction are
constipation, frequent urination, pain during urination, and lower back pain. Pelvic floor
dysfunction is common in women. (Faubion et al., 2012). It may be caused by aging and
childbirth. (Wang et al., 2012). Eleanor is an 88 year old woman. She is also a mother of two,
which means that she has given birth at least once. These factors may have contributed to her
condition. Eleanor has difficulties with constipation. She also has an increased urge to urinate and
has minor problems in controlling her urinary process. She experiences pain when she urinates.
Whenever she coughs, or carries anything, she cannot help but wet herself. She urinates as often as
ten times in the day and five times at night. Lastly, Eleanor has chronic back pain that does not stop
with over the counter pain medication. These symptoms show that Eleanor has pelvic floor
dysfunction.

these muscles may cause frequent urination, inability to control urination, and lower back pain.

The problem with food production in America is the mistreatment of livestock, the overproduction
of corn in America, and the amount of corn feeded to the animals ; these issues affect consumers
health because of the amount of diabetes has been increasing over years. Michael Pollan in When

Pollan argues that ... taxpayers will pay farmers $4 billion a year to grow ever more corn, this
despite the fact that we struggle to get rid of the surplus the plant already produces (para. 4).
This explains that many of the farmers are getting paid more to just grow corn and to over grow
them. Pollan vocalizes that America s corn crop might look like a sustainable, solar powered
system for producing food, but it is actually a huge, inefficient, polluting machine that guzzles
fossil fuel.. (Para 12). The corn needs a lot of gas to keep the production going which cause a lot
of pollution in the world and, also globe warning. Consumer don t know what type of food or
beverages have corn in them most of them don t even know where their meat or what the animals
are being feed because the government is hiding that away from them. Overall, this causes a lot of

About Shingles Essay
Shingles, herpes zoster, is a very contagious and painful rash, or blister that appears on the skin.
These rashes most commonly appear on the sides of the body in stripes. The stripes are made up
of many very painful blisters caused by a certain type of virus. The varicella zoster, most
commonly known as the chicken pox virus attacks the nerve roots in that area. The herpes zoster
virus is in the herpes family, including HSV, herpes simple virus, which causes cold sores, fever
blisters, and genital herpes. (WebMD, 2011) Most people are required to get the chicken pox shot
when they are children although some do not. The chicken pox shot helps to keep out the virus by
keeping it dormant in the nerves. The varicella zoster virus stays in a... Show more content on

Some of the first symptoms of shingles may include intense side pain, itching, tingling, and
burning. The symptoms most commonly appear before the rashes or blisters. Then red patches
on the skin form. These turn into clusters of blisters in stripes most commonly on the sides of
the torso, but may appear on the eyes, face, mouth, and ears. The blisters break soon after this
leaving the skin open to ulcers forming. The ulcers form a crust or scab to protect it. The scab
will fall off in approximately two to three weeks. Scarring usually does not exist. Additional
symptoms include chills, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, headache, joint pain, and difficulty
moving some facial muscles. If a woman is exposed to shingles during her pregnancy, and
acquires shingles, her pregnancy may be complicated. The mother may get very sick, and the
baby may get chicken pox right away or within a few days of birth. If the pregnant woman has
shingles within a few days before birth this can be very bad for the baby. The newborn baby
might not be able to handle all the stress on the body of the virus attacking the nerves so young. It
is not very common for this to happen although it can. If the rash is present, it is advised to go to
the doctor within three days. There is no cure for shingles but many medicines can lessen the
effects of the illness on the body. Shingles is most easily diagnosed by pains running along the

Moving forward, being able to strongly indicate our results through use of the mean and standard

between trials. The percentage error will also be a beneficial tool in showing how accurate and

of generating graphs and adapting to different functionalities. Although this lab felt somewhat
simulated, I felt as if it were a great starting point for setting up future labs, in terms of formatting

B. Results
The results of the study show the difference between five trials of one single object fall from a
constant distance. The other dependent variable in this experiment was the time in which the
object was measured (.5, .75, 1.0, 1.25 seconds). This variable serves as a checkpoint; every time
the object reaches one of these time slots, its distance in meters (the independent variable) was
measured. It is clear in every trial that the object gains momentum, and as each quarter of a second
passes, the distance the object has fallen increased exponentially. In each trial, the distance between

Panama Canal Analysis
Major events leading to the construction of the Panama Canal:
The French impose an effort on the construction of the canal but end in a dejected failure.
Within the 1900s, John Hay and Julian Pauncefote come to an agreement that allows the United
States to control the construction and administration of the canal without fortifying it (Hay
Pauncefote Treaty).
Theodore Roosevelt then becomes president establishing great significance towards the idea that
the United States should behold total management over the canal.
The second treaty accomplishes the goal that allows the United States fortification of the canal.
Due to the lower demands introduced to the senate along with the natural disaster of what Mt.
Momotombo could cause, congress favors Panama.
Hay then offers negotiations towards Colombia, but the agreement is rejected.
The superiorities in Washington then exposed the idea that Panama could resolve the Colombian
conflict if they established and won independence as a whole.
A Panamanian group then plans to initiate a revolution with over 500 rebels.
United States Naval ships stop Colombian troops from interfering with Panamanian rebels.
In one day with the help of the U.S. and its naval ships, Panama is granted independence from
Colombia.
A new treaty is established that explains and distinguishes the rights for building the canal while
also protecting Panama.
The canal is then built and finalized after seven years of Roosevelt s passing.

Essay Of Franz Kafka s Metamorphosis
In the book, The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, Gregor has moved down the social ladder to
the worst because of the loss of money. The novella follows the Marxist theory where Gregor
who represents the lower class, is exploited and eliminated. As part of the proletariat who sells his
labour power for wages, he does not own the means of production and thereby has no authority
over his very life. His limited powerresults in torture, mistreatment, exploitation, and ultimately
death.
In the first section, Gregor demonstrates the power he once had because he brought in money for
the family to spend. Because of this power and authority, he was able to get away with a lot of
things like freedom. However overall, the one with all the power is the family. They were the
ones demanding resources because Gregor was actually under them. Once Gregor was not able
to work he was quickly dropped by his family and shunned. He was sent to a room for himself
and he was supposed to live there for the time being. The family did not realize they had after
begging Gregor s manager to have Gregor keep his job. Their desperation showed the amount of
power money had on people and it determined the ranking. Without any more money the Samsa s
had to work for their own and their bitterness started to build up. This phenomenon hurt the whole
family because they had lost all consideration for the future (15). The family s first reaction to this
was that Gregor had to handle the situation himself,

Fashion In The Early 1900s
The Jazz culture inspired multiple dances, such as the Black Bottom and the ever popular
Charleston. These dances required lots of movement leading to a shift in women s fashion.
Women wore less undergarments, went without coresets, and designed dresses that allowed for
more freedom of movement. In 1921, Coco Chanel introduced the drop waist dress, which were
worn with long strings of glass beads or pearls. By 1925 these dresses resembled the shifts that
were worn under the dresses of the early 1900. Evening dress were made up of mesh material,

With advances in technologies and the development of college and night life, more young people
were spending more time together unsupervised. These changes created a sexual revolution in
people dated several partners at a time and participated in petting. The invention of the automobile
allowed for young people to travel outside the family sitting room, even young women learned to
drive. Electric lights permitted for young adults to stay out later into the night and created activities
to enjoy, such as the theater and night clubs. These developments in the dating culture strayed from
the prior Victorian teachings of how ladies should behave with boys. The new womanexpected to
be treated on these dates and that meant that she needed to allow petting. Petting consisted of
cuddling, kissing, and even foundling. This behavior led older women to believe that their
daughters were partaking in premarital sex, Joshua Zeitz disputes this in his book, Flapper: A
Madcap Story of Sex, Style, Celebrity, and the Women Who Made America Modern. He claims
that the percentage of women who were virgins when they were married only varied between the
years of 1910 to 1929 by 3%. This shows that even though young women in the 20s were engaged

The Punk Singer Critical Analysis
Turn your TV off Feminist Punk from a Postmodern Perspective
Following the life of Kathleen Hanna, the film The Punk Singer (Sini Anderson, 2013, UK) the
viewer gets an insight into the beginning and advance of the feminist punk Riot Grrrl movement.
Alongside the development of postmodernism, identity politics arose in importance as a way to
challenge the increase in social alienation which emerged as a result of industrialism and that was
widely accepted as a reality in modernism. The content of punk as a music genre confronts the
elitism created by industrialisation and the diminishing number of corporations providing mass
media. By rejecting mainstream content and forming close communities based on a shared identity
such as being a woman oppressed by the patriarchy Kathleen Hanna and her first band Bikini Kill
recognized the very foundations of social structure and the means of theorizing social relations and
culture. It was a reaction to being starved to death, culturally . Postmodernism is concerned with
subjectivity and the plurality that is individual experience of truth. It matters whether the subject
being discussed, and the subject speaking, is male or female [...] Rather than the distance imposed
by the idea of a master idea, it highlights intimacy and the importance of understanding non linear
methods of progress. In the film, this is exemplified through the value of zines. Being self published

The Earned income tax credit can be defined as a way for workers who have a moderate annual

A Report On Woolworths Company
My chosen business that my report will be based on is the Woolworths company, known primarily
in Australia for their supermarket s and retail chains. Woolworths run several high profile
Australian stores such as BWS, Dan Murphys, Big W and the highly publicized Masters. The
reason for my choice of Woolworths was that as they are one of the biggest companies and
employers in Australia, and have recently been in the media spotlight for the closing of one of the
recent projects Masters. Another major reason as to my choice of Woolworths is that there supply
chain would be as interesting and extensive as any other Australian based company. With almost a
thousand supermarkets Australia wide and over 100 thousand staff, Woolworths is one of the
countries prominent employers (Woolworths limited2012).
An added incentive as to why I chose to do my report on Woolworths was that they are my
current employer. I believe that by learning more about the current supply chain structure and
management of the company that I do indeed work for, will give me a more detailed overview
of the job that I am currently doing. By understanding more about the company you re involved
will hopefully keep me motivated and improve my work leading to a happier time whilst I am
working (Gelles 2013 p.37). As a billion dollar company, Woolworths would have to be very
careful and deliberate with who and what there supply chain consists of. With the vast variety of
social media and news sources in the current

Social Expectations In The Falling Woman
Society s Control Over Individuals
Beauty is determined by society and their standards. Women are expected to be skinny, pretty and
a size two which puts a lot of pressure on women. The pressures of society persuade women to go
through extreme measures to fit in with society standards. This is evident in the short story The
Falling girl and They re Not Your Husband as the main characters are impacted by social
expectations, insecurity and peer pressure.
Social expectations is a significant component in people s lives, to the point where people
become obsessive over materialistic aspects in life. These expectations creates normality for
individuals and essentially tell individuals how they should behave. There are different social
expectations that are induced for the upper class and the lower class, otherwise known as social
status. The two protagonist Marta from The Falling Girl and Earl from They re Not Your
Husband undergo challenges that they face regarding social expectations and social status,
which in turn shows the similarities between the two short stories. Marta was identified as
someone of lower class, she had dreams and ambitions of being a part of an elite society. Despite
all her aspirations in life, she knew that she would never obtain this lifestyle, which ultimately
lead downfall as she wanted to be a part of society. Marta from The Falling Girl was influenced by
the materialistic aspects in life that she failed to realize she had so much time to

This shelter is composed of many individuals with many traits, skills, and fundamental qualities

society needs order, it needs discipline, commitment and most importantly good people with a
good heart. I believe every resident of this shelter has those qualities within them. I have six
main goals for us: survive, educate, clean up, rebuild/restructure, repopulate and re unite. Our
shelter has all the proper defenses and shields to prevent any harm to us from the chaos and
radiation that will transpiring outside of these walls. Our walls are 15 ft. thick of many layers

We generate our own electricity and have many energy efficient appliances. I have put into place
many emergency plants of surviving incase for some reason our shelter becomes compromised.
The next goal is educating our young ones. While we wait for the radiation levels to minimize,

The Marriage Between Elizabeth And Mrs. Darcy
The eventual marriage between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice comes as a result
of their profound personal rediscoveries. Initially, a slew of misunderstandings between the two
characters, stemming from their first encounter at a ball in Meryton, had plagued the relationship,
nearly rendering it irreconcilable. They both left that first ball with wildly different interpretations
of each other s intentions; Darcy s refusal to dance with Elizabeth instilled her with a budding
resentment that would distort her judgement of him until mid way through the novel, while the
former character, assured by his pride, viewed her disposition as flirtatious in nature. These
conflicting perspectives put them both at cross purposes, but neither realizes this truth until they
each embark on a personal journey of self discovery; Elizabeth and Darcy s subsequent realizations
better them both, and renders the pair romantically compatible. Elizabeth and Darcy s meeting at
Pemberley, the latter character s home, allows the two to showcase their newly transformed
personas without the cloud of prejudice. Upon their arrival, Mrs. Reynolds, the housekeeper, greets
Elizabeth and her aunt and uncle, the Gardiners. While touring them around the estate, she praises
Darcy, describing him as generous, good natured, and protective of his sister; these unequivocal
words help to increase Elizabeth s regard for him as a person. Darcy eventually arrives, and reveals
his transformation through his

The Importance of Boosting Morale in the Workplace
The Importance of Boosting Morale in the Workplace A team is only as strong as their weakest
link. The same can also be said for a company. It is often forgotten that it takes everyone in a
company operating on all cylinders for it to be successful. However, it is no secret that humans
tend to perform at the highest of their abilities when they are happy. It makes sense that a company
would want their employees operating at a higher productivity rate. For the company higher
productivity normally results in more income. The company will not get a high level of
productivity from employees (legally) unless they boost morale. Keeping employees involved, less
stressed and motivated by presenting challenging but, attainable goals with... Show more content on

This means that a good goal is specific, achievable but challenging, while providing the
employee with a sense that the goal is indeed theirs and that the employee is interested in
achieving the goal. The performance of the employee attempting to complete the goal is
determined by the goal directed effort, how much support the company offers and the
employees own abilities and traits. When the goal is complete the model shows that intrinsic
rewards and extrinsic rewards are followed by satisfaction. The goal setting theory model proves
that when goals are set appropriately the employees performance will ultimately lead to them
attaining a reward that in turn will give the employee satisfaction and boost morale. Stress is a
major part of any job. Psychologists believe stress is caused by a stimulus that is either physical
or psychological that makes the individual respond to the stimulus in some way (#2 pg 178).
Stress can be brought on by a goal or daunting task that is unachievable or unpleasant. This is
often called distress. However, not all stress is brought on by negative things. Pleasurable stress
is called eustress. Eustress normally is experienced during pleasurable events. Stress can be used
to motivate employees to accomplish a goal or it may need to be lowered to help improve morale.
The only way to deal with stress is to find what the stimulus is. Sometimes stress is triggered in an

Extreme Sports Not About Risk Taking Study
A wise person once said, The proper function of man is to live, not exist. I shall not waste my
days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time. This quote explains that we should not waste
our time and actually do something worth living for. That we should use the time we have to do
or become something, instead of wasting it. We should use this in our life just like how extreme
sports athletes did. The only difference is that their path is riskier than ours because they do many
dangerous activities such as Base Jumping, Cave Diving, and BMX. Extreme sports are a good
idea because you get to be in the moment and feel the rush, but you should take some precautions
because it can be very dangerous.
One reason why extreme sports should be participated in is because many people find their

Analysis Of The Essay Planting A Tree By Edward Abbey
The essay I chose to read was Planting a Tree by Edward Abbey. To me, the most interesting part
of this essay is the shift from describing the terrain, to describing the missile bases located in the
area. The way the author describes the military is simply fascinating , The life expectancy of the
average Tucsonan, therefore, is thirty minutes or whatever it takes for an ICBM to shuttle from
there to here. Also, whenever the author describes the great contemporary empires , Like mortally
wounded tyrannosaurs, they thrash out in frenzy, seeking enemies, destroying thousands of
innocent lives with each blind spasm of reaction. The author s use of active verbs and language
makes this story develop in such a way that the story will never fall

Flexibility and Adaptability of Youth Movements
Mohamed chased after his 15 years old brother who secretly escaped to Syria to fight and be hailed
a hero, just as his brother was after fighting in the Libyan revolution. Disbelieving, disappointed and
devalued, Mohamed says it s our fault, we started a revolution and didn t finish it (Olivesi, 2014).
His words sum up the contextual reality of many of the countries affected by the Arab Spring, not
only in terms of the power youth asserted to demand change, but also their diminishing reflection
that mirrors their helplessness throughout transcending societal spheres, as they once again become
triumphed by institutional backwardness, prolonged elitism, corruption and socio economic
demands that are yet to be acknowledged. Even though Samuel Huntington (as cited in Kuhn, 2012)
warned policy markers that too speedy modernization could result in rising expectations, popular
anger and violent revolutions, the Arab Spring was long overdue and even though Egypt, Tunisia
and Libyaare not identical cases, their Arabness (Hayes, 2011) united them and garnered the
mobilization effort to challenge the status quo.
Foucault suggests addressing resistance as a chemical catalyst so as to bring light to power
relations, locate their positions and find out their point of application and methods used (780). The
Arab Spring marked a historic event that propelled youth agency and power into the spotlight
through media and the internet as their demands, aspirations and grievances were heard

This paper will present several subtopics including a model of stress known as the General
Adaptation Syndrome, the causes of stress, the consequences of stress, and how to manage work

However, if the stressor persists, then the individual will not be able to handle the stress for long.
In this stage, the individual s energy is being depleted.
The third and final stage, Exhaustion, is when an individual s level of resistance to the stressor
decreases dramatically until it goes below the normal level. In this stage, an individual s energy
has run out and he or she is unable to maintain normal body functioning. If the stressor continues,
long term damage could occur to the person s body. The body s immune system is weakened
which can result in being more prone to sickness.
An alternative to the Exhaustion stage is the Recovery stage. This stage occurs when an
individual is able to successfully cope with and overcome the stressor (Wikipedia, 2012). This
paper will be specifically discussing and analyzing work related stress. So, what is work related
stress? Work related stress, also known as occupational stress, is stress related to the workplace.
Work related stress can occur in an individual when his or her workplace has a highly demanding
environment or job and he or she does not have the ability to completely deal with the
demanding workplace or complete the demanding job (Wikipedia, 2012). There are several other
factors that can cause work related stress which will be presented in this paper. Now that a
definition and model of stress have been presented, this paper will focus on the causes of stress,
known as stressors, as it

The Red Guards
The Red Guard strove to remove and destroy the Four Olds, foreign influence, enemies of the
Party and the current societal structure by persecuting those who supposedly perpetuated them. All
vestiges of outdated customs, habits, culture and ideas were to be destroyed, since the movement
represented a triumph of youth over age, of the new over the old. To do so, the Red Guard
wrecked thousands of art collections and the contents of libraries, and changed reactionary street
signs. They persecuted members of the public who attempted to stop them or refused to give up the

At one point, the divide between the two groups was so great that it was suggested to divide
society by class in full. Those considered to be from bourgeois backgrounds would be denied
urban services and physically separated from those of truly red backgrounds, like the cadres and
lower peasants. However, Mao later issued a statement in autumn of 1966 denouncing this belief,
declaring that one s political devotion, not natural redness, define[s] the true revolutionary
activist. The plans for physical separation were forgotten, but the tension still remained. Despite
Mao s attempts to smooth out the division already forming within the Red Guard, the seeds of
factionalism had already been sown. By the peak of the Red Guard movement in January of
1967, it had broken down into warring factions and unleashed havoc across China. Because of the
Red Guard s lack of a unified mindset, they lacked common targets to remove as they purged local
governments of officials. Groups of Red Guards would senselessly fight against Party leaders and
each other, with no central goal. Some would work to initiate opposition and struggle against Party
members whom they deemed too conservative, while others attempted to prevent the overthrow of

because her sister takes her husband s side. Describing a relationship between two sisters can be
complicated. Sisters may argue and pretend to distance themselves, but when it comes to
outsiders disrespecting one or the other, sisters stick up for each other. Stella on the other hand
did not. Stella was in denial over everything. Stella was in the middle of every conflict that went
down with Blanche and Stanley. When Stanley was insulted by Blanche of their living space
Stella did not say a word. She s stuck in between the two because she does not want to seem like
she s choosing sides. Usually a sister would have their siblings back but Stella did not because
she was too in love with sexual relationship she had with her husband and she realized that if she

gone. The relationship between Stella and Blanche seemed off. Ever since Stella moved to New

  • 2. How Did Buddy Bolden Influence African American Music is a simple part within everyone s lives; whether you re young or old, black or white, music has a place within your heart. Music is a diverse world within itself, including many different genres like jazz, pop, rock, classical, etc. Jazz is the only music genre that Americans themselves invented. African Americanculture is where this musicstarted, though. A very influential African American character in our history is Buddy Bolden. He was an enormous influence on the jazzcultures in American history. Buddy Bolden is also the first known person to ever play jazz music, crediting him as the original creator. Charles Joseph Buddy Bolden was born September 6th, 1877 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was born to Westmore Bolden and Alice nГ©e Harris. His father passed away when Charles was only 6 years old. He grew up to play the cornet and the ragtime style of Jass , which later became known as Jazz. Bolden was an avid cornet player and enjoyed experimenting with different playing styles within his music. He wrote his own song, which is labeled now as Buddy Bolden Blues , but was originally called Funky Butt back in his time. This song was considered extremely offensive to some people, as the lyrics weren t the nicest. He enjoyed playing in this new style of music labeled as blues ... Frankly, their message has always been Stay out! Recently, California policies have taken a harsher stab at immigration, namely Mexican immigrants that constitute the largest Latin American minority in the United States. This paper intends to examine these policies, the effects they have had on the Mexican population in California, and the connection they have to the anti immigrant sentiment felt throughout the country. First, though, looking closely at anti immigrant sentiment in America and policies that have been enacted in the past by the U.S. are necessary to the understanding of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During World War II, the U.S. and Mexico reached an agreement in which a massive number of Mexicans would be transported to America as temporary workers in agriculture because of the anticipated worker shortage created by the war. (6) Of all the labor used in production throughout the first half of the century, 75 percent is believed to be Mexican. (7) It is obvious then that since the beginning of the century, the United States has been a source of employment for Mexicans out of work and it is this attitude which has created the incentive for Mexican migration during the latter half of the century. Anti immigrant sentiments felt in America have much to do with this attitude. The fact is that most Mexicans immigrate to this country in search of employment and of a better life for their children, as do most other immigrants into the U.S . This is seen as an economic threat by many Americans because of the large number of Mexicans residing in the United States: 62 percent of the entire Hispanic population of America as of 1988.(8) California, which is home to the largest Mexican population in the U.S., has vigorously expresses its discontent with the current status of immigration. Pete Wilson, governor of California and an anti immigrant proponent, claims that the large numbers of immigrants settling in California are reeking havoc on its economy. Playing football has taught me many valuable lessons. While playing football, I have better understood the values of hard work. Football taught me that the only way to succeed in something is by working harder than anyone else. Football has also taught me that when working with a team, everybody has an important role and if one person slacks off it hurts the entire team. There is no I in team and teamwork is a valuable life lesson. Whenever teammates are focused on individual accomplishments, instead of the team s success, the team as a whole does not perform as well. I have learned through this that when you... I made sure to always give my best during practices and workouts because I knew the younger kids would see me trying my best and it would push them to do their best. In track, I was the only upperclassman long distance runner during my junior year. While the track coaches were busy with the short distance runners and field events, they trusted me to watch over and teach the JV runners. I made sure that all of the kids would do the complete running workout. I made sure to be a good example for hard work in track also. I would push myself as hard as I could every day in order to instill a good work ethic into the kids. By improving my running times every week, the kids learned that the only way to succeed is through pushing themselves as hard as they can. I feel a great sense of pride and enjoyment when I watch the kids improve in the sports I helped them with. My goal when leading was not only to help the kids be the best they can be in their sport but more importantly teach them life lessons that will help them throughout their life. Mentoring these kids showed me that leading by example is the best way to be a good leader. . I have learned the importance of serving others by being a part of the youth group at my church. • 7. Synopsis Of The Movie The Great Gatsby By F. Scott... Webs It was late evening when Humbert parked in front of the house. The real estate agent was waiting for him on the lawn. Humbert got out of his car and walked over to the man. The dry ground crunched as Humbert stepped on it. He also noticed that all the crickets sounded far away. The whole place seemed kind of off and different than the rest of the nice town he had just driven through. Hello, I m Humbert Smith, he introduced himself to the real estate agent. Humbert glanced down at the agent s name tag. In sloppy handwriting was written: Adam Chadwick. He was a bald, overweight man with a red, sweaty face. He turned it on and put the brightness all the way up to one hundred percent. He walked forwards through the doorway which Adam had gone. Every step he took creaked loudly in the silence. There are a lot of spiderwebs, aren t there, Humbert said to himself, shining the light around the walls of the hallway. This house was old, but were there really this many spiders? Humbert found a door that had recently been opened judging by the lack of dust on the handle. The door squeaked open and Humbert shone the light from his phone inside. He was greeted with a horrible sight. The room was huge; the biggest room in the house. The walls were draped with webs. Everywhere, like giant sheets covering the room. There were thousands of bugs stuck inside of the layers of webbing. That was disgusting in itself but what really horrified Humbert was something much worse. The film Pay it forward represents sociological perspectives such as Functionalism, conflict perspective, and symbolic interactionism. Pay it forward represents functionalism, the approach that emphasizes the contributions made by each part of society to keep it functioning smoothly, in each characters lifestyle and background. Society uses functionalism to understand what they are doing themselves. We depend on an overall consensus of beliefs and values, mechanical solidarity, to give our lives its value. In the dramaturgy, Arlene is a perfect example of someone using mechanical solidarity working a degrading job also allowing sexism to be a part of what values she has for herself. From the Virgin Mary sacrificing her dignity, to the Lord sacrificing his life upon the Cross, sacrifice reigns as a significant theme throughout the religious doctrine. The Bible, as a piece of Literature, has transcended profound influence with an emphasis on sacrificeupon various other works of European literature, particularly in William Shakespeares pieces. Cassio even crassly remarked to her, What do you mean by this haunting of me? Bianca is a foil to Desdemona, because she blatantly defied the gender roles of society. Wistfully, in return, she met rejection by men for being confident. Desdemona feared becoming outcasted, alas, she saved the extroversion for her male counterparts. Regrettably, events only take a turn for the worst. Desdemona sacrifices her own life. Othello rapidly spirals into insanity, and Iago accomplishes the final step of his gruesome plan: to kill Desdemona. As Desdemona is being brutally murdered, she displays signs of sympathy towards Othello. She has now fully convinced herself by even doing the slightest acts, such as observing another man s refinery, she has provided Othello with substantial ammunition to deduce that she ... The other dependent variable in this experiment was the time in which the object was measured (.5, .75, 1.0, 1.25 seconds). This variable serves as a checkpoint; every time the object reaches one of these time slots, its distance in meters (the independent variable) was measured. It is clear in every trial that the object gains momentum, and as each quarter of a second passes, the distance the object has fallen increased exponentially. In each trial, the distance between 1.00 second and 1.25 second nearly doubled, which was much more significant than the

Within the 1900s, John Hay and Julian Pauncefote come to an agreement that allows the United States to control the construction and administration of the canal without fortifying it (Hay Pauncefote Treaty). Theodore Roosevelt then becomes president establishing great significance towards the idea that the United States should behold total management over the canal. The superiorities in Washington then exposed the idea that Panama could resolve the Colombian conflict if they established and won independence as a whole. A Panamanian group then plans to initiate a revolution with over 500 rebels. United States Naval ships stop Colombian troops from interfering with Panamanian rebels. In one day with the help of the U.S. and its naval ships, Panama is granted independence from Colombia. A new treaty is established that explains and distinguishes the rights for building the canal while also protecting Panama. The canal is then built and finalized after seven years of Roosevelt s passing. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Essay Of Franz Kafka s Metamorphosis In the book, The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, Gregor has moved down the social ladder to the worst because of the loss of money. The novella follows the Marxist theory where Gregor who represents the lower class, is exploited and eliminated. As part of the proletariat who sells his labour power for wages, he does not own the means of production and thereby has no authority over his very life. His limited powerresults in torture, mistreatment, exploitation, and ultimately death. In the first section, Gregor demonstrates the power he once had because he brought in money for the family to spend. Because of this power and authority, he was able to get away with a lot of things like freedom. However overall, the one with all the power is the family. They were the ones demanding resources because Gregor was actually under them. Once Gregor was not able to work he was quickly dropped by his family and shunned. He was sent to a room for himself and he was supposed to live there for the time being. The family did not realize they had after begging Gregor s manager to have Gregor keep his job. Their desperation showed the amount of power money had on people and it determined the ranking. Without any more money the Samsa s had to work for their own and their bitterness started to build up. This phenomenon hurt the whole family because they had lost all consideration for the future (15). The family s first reaction to this was that Gregor had to handle the situation himself, ... These changes created a sexual revolution in people dated several partners at a time and participated in petting. Electric lights permitted for young adults to stay out later into the night and created activities to enjoy, such as the theater and night clubs. These developments in the dating culture strayed from the prior Victorian teachings of how ladies should behave with boys. The new womanexpected to be treated on these dates and that meant that she needed to allow petting. Petting consisted of cuddling, kissing, and even foundling. This behavior led older women to believe that their daughters were partaking in premarital sex, Joshua Zeitz disputes this in his book, Flapper: A Madcap Story of Sex, Style, Celebrity, and the Women Who Made America Modern. The Punk Singer Critical Analysis Turn your TV off Feminist Punk from a Postmodern Perspective Following the life of Kathleen Hanna, the film The Punk Singer (Sini Anderson, 2013, UK) the viewer gets an insight into the beginning and advance of the feminist punk Riot Grrrl movement. Alongside the development of postmodernism, identity politics arose in importance as a way to challenge the increase in social alienation which emerged as a result of industrialism and that was widely accepted as a reality in modernism. The content of punk as a music genre confronts the elitism created by industrialisation and the diminishing number of corporations providing mass media. By rejecting mainstream content and forming close communities based on a shared identity such as being a woman oppressed by the patriarchy Kathleen Hanna and her first band Bikini Kill recognized the very foundations of social structure and the means of theorizing social relations and culture. Initially, a slew of misunderstandings between the two characters, stemming from their first encounter at a ball in Meryton, had plagued the relationship, nearly rendering it irreconcilable. They both left that first ball with wildly different interpretations of each other s intentions; Darcy s refusal to dance with Elizabeth instilled her with a budding resentment that would distort her judgement of him until mid way through the novel, while the former character, assured by his pride, viewed her disposition as flirtatious in nature. These conflicting perspectives put them both at cross purposes, but neither realizes this truth until they each embark on a personal journey of self discovery; Elizabeth and Darcy s subsequent realizations better them both, and renders the pair romantically compatible. Elizabeth and Darcy s meeting at Pemberley, the latter character s home, allows the two to showcase their newly transformed personas without the cloud of prejudice. Upon their arrival, Mrs. Reynolds, the housekeeper, greets Elizabeth and her aunt and uncle, the Gardiners. Disbelieving, disappointed and devalued, Mohamed says it s our fault, we started a revolution and didn t finish it (Olivesi, 2014). His words sum up the contextual reality of many of the countries affected by the Arab Spring, not only in terms of the power youth asserted to demand change, but also their diminishing reflection that mirrors their helplessness throughout transcending societal spheres, as they once again become triumphed by institutional backwardness, prolonged elitism, corruption and socio economic demands that are yet to be acknowledged. Even though Samuel Huntington (as cited in Kuhn, 2012) warned policy markers that too speedy modernization could result in rising expectations, popular anger and violent revolutions, the Arab Spring was long overdue and even though Egypt, Tunisia and Libyaare not identical cases, their Arabness (Hayes, 2011) united them and garnered the mobilization effort to challenge the status quo. Foucault suggests addressing resistance as a chemical catalyst so as to bring light to power relations, locate their positions and find out their point of application and methods used (780).
