Summary Of The Film The Linguists
The film The Linguists follows linguists Gregory Anderson and David Harrison on their journey to
learn about and document endangered languages in Bolivia, India, Arizona, and Siberia. Through their
quest, they are able to interact with some of the few remaining speakers of languages that are near
death and they manage to make an impact on how these communities view their heritage language.
Focusing on the moribund languages of Siberia and Arizona, it becomes evident that speakers of the
heritage language feel a love for the language and the culture it represents, but went through periods
of oppression and embarrassment for being speakers of a minority language that ultimately shaped
their attitudes on the language. The film highlights the Chemehuevi language of a Native American
tribe in Arizona, where there is only one remaining speaker. The speaker is forced to repeat words to
himself and replay recordings in Chemehuevi over and over again so that he can keep the language
alive, since there is no one else who knows the language. This exemplifies how drastically endangered
this language is, as it is only survived by one speaker. It is evident that this man has a love for his
language and a cultural attachment to it because he does not give up in keeping it alive, even if it
means having to talk to himself repeatedly. The local majority language that killed off Chemehuevi
was English, as it kept being imposed on younger generations until it was ultimately the only

Americans Attitude Change in the 60s Essay
Question 1: For many Americans, the 1960s began with JFK s Age of Camelot, an era that seemed to
exude confidence in American institutions. Yet, by the early 1970s, those expectations and attitudes
seemed to be replaced by a sense of bitterness and cynicism. Discuss and analyze the causes and
consequences of this profound attitudinal shift.
Question 3: How did official US policy towards Vietnam change between 1950 and 1975? How did
American leaders link events in Vietnam to national security interests? How did the American public
react to the war in the sixties and early seventies?
Answer: These two questions are so intertwined with one another that combining the two answers is
the most efficient way of telling the story. Vietnam was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Within the center of this division lay Berlin. Russia s communist intentions were becoming clearer to
western powers. Stalin had no plans to back down from further conflict. In 1946, Churchill delivered
the Iron Curtain speech, symbolizing future relations with the communist powers. In 1947, U.S.
president Truman established his famous doctrine of containment policy, which outlined in vague
terms the west s distain and containment intentions of further communist expansion by Russia. In
1948, Americans witnessed the pressurized showdown in Berlin between western forces and Russian
occupiers, which eventually led to the division of Germany, and the construction of the Berlin Wall.
Once, the Russians began developing and testing nuclear weapons, and the subsequent development of
space flight, Americans placed their lives in the hands of their government to handle this new, Cold
War.
The baby boom generation grew up in this environment. They grew up with missile drills and
McCarthy s witch hunt of communists within the government. Communism was something to be
feared, and America knew it.
The election of 1960 brought hope to much of America, despite the close margin of victory for the
Kennedy camp. JFK himself had been a war hero, and was viewed by Americans as determined to win
the cold war. JFK was an attractive man, had a beautiful wife, and a seemingly perfect family. The

The Representation of Children in the Media Essay
The Representation of Children in the Media
I am writing about how children are represented in the media, after a group investigation carried out to
see how they are portrayed in different papers; local newspapers, tabloids and broadsheets. We were
looking to see if newspapers showed positive or negative images of children and how they portrayed
them in general.
In local papers there are usually articles of local news from around the area, items for sale and
advertisements. Local papers highlight local stories and issues. Local papers usually have the scores or
information about local teams in the sport section. The local papers are distributed to a specific area
and usually contain news about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You often get emotional views of people s life, if sometimes good or bad has happened to a famous
person. You also get a biography or diary about someone s life and how they lived, mostly successful
people or important people who have died. Tabloids do tend to run sensational emotional stories.
Broadsheets are similar to tabloids, but most of the broadsheets present a more balanced view of the
news. They fund to be not as sensational and more factual and informative.
Local papers have more pictures then any other kind of paper, they have more pictures of children,
and the readers are able to see children of their own or children that they know of. In the most positive
pictures you see children achieving or being brilliant. In some pictures you will see children as
victims, but often they will have happy endings. They also show brave little angels that have helped
their community and someone shown as accessories to local heroes or famous people e.g. David
Beckham and his son s Brooklyn and Romeo.
Tabloids often don t have many pictures of children, and it is unusual to see a child achieving
something in a tabloid. The international stories are often extreme and very emotive. The children are
either devils or angels. Tabloids are biased and

The Impact Of Wearing Formal Clothing On Cognitive Processing
Article Analysis Assignment In their study, the authors endeavored to examine the impact of wearing
formal clothing on cognitive processing. The authors want to explore a difference, if any, between the
abstract thought processes of a participant wearing formal clothes. As for their hypothesis, they
suspect that wearing formal clothing induces more abstract cognitive processing. (Slepian 1)
According to the article, events that are psychologically distant are conceived of relatively abstractly,
while events that are psychologically near are conceived of relatively concretely. In layman s terms,
the authors are suggesting that increases of social comfort encourages concrete thinking while less
social comfort encourages abstract thinking. Therefore, because formal clothing creates social
distance, the authors, in their respective opinion, have good reason to suppose that the bearing of
formal clothing will increase abstract thinking. The researchers conducted five different studies, all of
which used undergraduates as participants of the study. For the first study, the participants were sixty
undergraduates and 78% were female. In the study, researchers studied the relationship between
clothing and abstract processing, while accounting for the covariant, socioeconomic status.
Participants were asked to rate the formality of their currently worn clothing in relation to their peers
on a scale from 50 to +50. In addition, they were given a behavioral identification form in

T.S Eliot
From His Life to the Page T. S. Eliot s work was greatly influenced by his life. There was a basic
pattern in his works that corresponded with the events in his life. This pattern brought about many
changes and phases in his poetry. Even Eliot s attitude was reflected in his work. A quote from T. S.
Eliot: The Man and His Work states, Eliot was a man with the highest standards in his poetry, his
critisism, and his behavior to others. ( Spender 34). Perhaps much of this can be attributed to his birth
toward the end of the Victorian Era. Eliot s background also had a major effect on his writing style. He
was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on September 26, 1888. Though Eliot was born in America, he spent
much of his life in England. Although ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Eliot published many religious works including Idea of a Christian Society. The plays that Eliot wrote
in this period reflected a spiritual content as well as many journeys and tasks. His works also became
more political. He spoke of how corrupt and apathetic the new age had become. His new political
views were probably sparked from his life as a British citizen. Analyzation of Eliot s life provides
great insight on why his writing was divided into these four periods. Eliot s demeanor was also
evident in his work. Many said that Eliot often had a very serious look about him. He was very
sophisticated in his speech and actions, and when he was humorous, it was in a very strange way. He
often would make remarks that made very little sense. Both sides of his personality showed up in his
work. Most of his writing was serious in nature, but sometimes it was amusing such as his Old
Possum s Book of Practical Cats. Many people know of this work because the very popular musical
Cats was based on it. Both of these were filled with nonsense humor. Eliot s influences made a huge
impact on his writing. He was completely immersed in the works from Greek and Roman literature, as
well as modern and medieval Europe. Eliot also greatly love the Rubiyat of Omar Khayyam. Much of
this influence was evident in the work. One of Eliot s greatest influences was Ezra Pound. Eliot met
Ezra Pound in 1914, and that meeting proved to be of great significance to Eliot s writing career. Ezra

Essay On The Role Of An American Citizen
The role of the citizen in the American government is a subject many are uneducated about and don t
know what exactly a citizens responsibilities and the impact of the the average persons. Many people
only know things that directly affect them as an individual but they don t know about other citizens
lives around the nation and what there role is in contrast to theirs. The singular view of your regularly
life is the only thing you care and know about but you don t know how the population live as a whole.
Citizens have a much broader role in the government and democracy of the United States than they are
identified for in their daily lives.
Citizens have many important roles in government, and plenty of responsibilities in the daily life of a
citizen in the nation. The contributions of immigrants have helped shape and define the country we
know today. More than 200 years after our founding, naturalized citizens are still an important part of
our democracy (U.S. Citizenship and immigration services). A few of the abundant responsibilities of

Essay on Suzanne Britts Sloppy People vs Neat People
Neat People vs. Sloppy People appears in Britt s collection show and tell. Mingling humor with
seriousness (as she often does), Britt has called the book a report on her journey into the awful cave of
self: You shout your name and voices come back in exultant response, telling you their names. In this
essay about curtain inescapable personality traits, you may recognize some aspects of your own self,
awful or otherwise. For a different approach to a similar subject, see the next essay, by Dave Barry.
I ve finally figured out the difference between neat people and sloppy people. The distinction is, as
always, moral. Neat people are lazier and meaner than sloppy people. Sloppy people, you see, are not
really sloppy. Their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sloppy people can t bear to part with anything. They give loving attention to every detail. When
sloppy people say they re going to tackle the surface of the desk, they really mean it. Not a paper will
go unturned; not a rubber band will go unboxed. Four hours or two weeks into the excavation, the
desk looks exactly the same, primarily because the sloppy person is meticulously creating new piles of
paper with new headings and scrupulously stopping to read all the old book catalogs before he threw
them away. A neat person would just bulldoze the desk. Neat people are bums and clods at heart. They
have cavalier attitude toward possession, including the family heirlooms. Everything is just another
dust catcher to them. If anything collects dust, it s got to go and that s that. Neat people will toy with
the idea of throwing the children out of the house just to cut down on the clutter. Neat people don t
care about process. They like results. What they want to do is get the whole thing over with so they
can sit down and watch the rasslin on TV. Neat people operate on two unvarying principles: Never
handle any items twice, and throw everything away. The only thing messy in a neat persons house is
the thrash can. The minute something comes to a neat person hand, he will look at it, try to decide if it
has immediate use and, finding none, throw it in the trash. Neat people especially

The Divine Timeless Eternity Theory Essay
The divine timeless eternity theory is the traditional view pertaining to God and time, but it is by no
means the only theory, as there are at least four. My original intention was to compare two views in
relation to this topic, however, the complexity of the dialogue has proven difficult. Therefore, I will
discuss one theory in depth since I believe it will suffice. In this framework, I will discuss the
challenges and varying beliefs with the ideas involved. The goal of my paper is to understand the
doctrine of eternity and find how this changes my understanding of God. Then I will discuss how this
issue influences my approach to God, and to my ministry. First, however, I will explain the need to
uncover the idea of eternalism. We will now proceed.
Why might one explore the idea of how God functions in time? It is extremely difficult to ignore
questions after they have been asked. Historically, questions have been the cause of councils and
creeds that now exist as essential dogmas of the Christian faith. Without questioning, what is real and
what actually exists? The difference can only be distinguished by those who question. While it might
not be explicitly stated, the idea of eternalism is biblical. The theology of the trinity was a similar idea,
where no single passage gives enough evidence to a triune God, but with a proper understanding of
the biblical narrative, there is enough truth to discover such a characteristic of God s nature. In
congruence of this thought,

Catch 22 Themes
In Joseph Heller s satirical novel Catch 22, Yossorian, an American bombardier soldier in World War
II, is stationed on an island off the coast of Italy with his fellow comrades. Everyone there is frustrated
and upset as most of them have completed the amount of missions that are needed to be sent back
home, but catch 22 is a law that is interpreted different ways throughout the book that ultimately is
there to keep soldiers from going on leave. The war gradually takes a severe toll on Yossorian,
especially when his friend Nately is killed in combat. After this, Yossorian refuses to fly anymore
missions and gets caught in Rome illegally. With this, the officers over Yossorian give him two
choices: be court martialed or receive an honorable discharge by voicing his approval of raising the
amount of missions to eighty before a soldier can be sent home. Yossorian, however, had other plans
as he decides to get away from the catch 22 once and for all by escaping to neutral country of Sweden
to take control of his life once again. There are many different elements that Joseph Heller utilizes to
portray the horrors of war such as the characterization of Yossorian, the characterization of Milo
Minderbinder, and the theme of the absurdity of war presented throughout the novel. Unlike many
other characters in the book, Yossorian is characterized as a realist who sees all the horrors of the war
when many others cannot. This is portrayed in a conversation between Clevinger and

What Did The Choice Of Nation Building And Reconciliation...
To what extent did the choice of nation building and reconciliation help South Africa avoid a pending
civil war from 1990 1994
INTRODUCTION
The early 1990s in South Africa marked the start of a process leading to the official end of an
oppressive and discriminatory apartheid regime. The period was characterised by sporadic bouts of
political intolerance and indecisiveness leading to clear moments of political frustration between the
opposition (the minority parties like National Party, AWB, Freedom Front Plus) and the liberation
forces (African National Congress (ANC) the Pan African Congress (PAC) and the South African
Communist Party (SACP)),and at times, violence and bloodshed. The commitment to ending this

INVESTIGATION
Before the early 1990s, South Africa was an Apartheid state governed by the National Party. The
country was governed by the white people, who segregated the white minority from the black majority
as well as the black people ethnically. It was not before the late 1970s/early 1980s that civil resistance
began to rear its head against the discriminatory and oppressive Apartheid government, forcing the
government to make reforms. These reforms lead to increased civil resistance within communities,
and later pressure both internally, through increased civil resistance by making the state ungovernable,
and externally, through economic sanctions and isolation, for the abolishment of the Apartheid. The
deadlock between the liberation movements and the oppressors, along with the external pressures,
pressurized the National Party into compromising with the leading liberation movement African
National Congress. In February 1990, the then president of South Africa, President F. W De Klerk
announced the unbanning of the liberation movements Pan African Congress, African National
Congress and South African Communist Party, following the unbanning, was Nelson Mandela s
release which marked the start of the transition period from 1990 1994. South Africa was cloaked with

Cal And Aron In John Steinbeck s East Of Eden
In the book East of Eden by John Steinbeck, Caleb and Aron are the twin sons of Adam and Cathy
Trask. Adam s relationship with Cal and Aron closely resembles that of the biblical Cain and Abel
parable. Adam, undoubtedly loving Aron more than Cal, is metaphorically shoving Cal into a corner
by rejecting so many of his gifts and actions as a son. The relationship between Cal and Adam is a
distant one from the beginning, neither making an effort to fully understand the other since Aron is so
obviously the perfect child. Cal, jealous of Aron constantly holding his father s attention, goes through
many dilemmas on the journey to gain his father s acceptance. In striving to ultimately gain his father

throws insults at her, which rebound and only hurt himself instead. Cal s face was one of sluggish and

while Aron went crazy. (548) Even Cathy didn t know what Cal was hoping to gain from showing his
innocent brother this inexplicably awful scene, her and her house of sin. Upon leaving their mother s,
the sobbing Aron throws his fists at Cal until even he can t take it. He runs screaming into the dark,
and just after that, Aron is enlisting in the army. After days with no sign of him, Cal grows scared, and
a panic for Aron [rises] inside of him . (567) Feeling guilty, Cal burns the fifteen thousand dollars as
an attempted sacrifice to bring Aron back. The next thing heard from Aron is a postcard, telling Adam

Influence Of Influence On Yeats
A poet is not always aware of all the sources that influence his poetry. Various experiences and fields
of knowledge that he is familiar with, play upon his mind and form a new compound which hardly
bears any resemblance to the original sources. A reader who feels that he has been able to trace the
source is required to ascertain that the poet was in fact exposed to that source. An Indian critic or
reader with his knowledge of and sympathy for Indian culture is more likely to be able to feel the
Indian echoes. But he must look for support in Yeats s autobiography or perhaps his biography, his
letters or other writing. That Yeats was not only familiar but well versed with Indian philosophy is
clearly proved by his letters and essays. Therefore ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Museum Of Anthropology And The Smithsonian Museum
Try, if you would, to recall your last visit to a museum or other similar institution. Did you
immediately accept the information presented to you as fact? Did you stop to think about how a
particular exhibit represents a culture and whether or not it was accurate? Since their origin, museums
were created for the purpose of preservation and interpretation of the material culture they exhibit, and
have been the most widely accepted method for the dissemination of information pertaining to other
cultures. That being said, there is an increasing amount of discourse today questioning the value of
museums and the ways in which their exhibition of material culture actually serves to devalue or
misrepresent their cultures of origin. For this research paper, I have decided to focus in the collections
of material culture present in the Beloit College Logan Museum of Anthropology and the Smithsonian
Museum. First, I begin by sharing what I have learned about the history surrounding the origins of
museums. Next, I identify the ways in which museums obscure and misrepresent the cultures they
display through their exhibits either intentionally or otherwise. Finally, I attempt to utilize what I have
learned in order to compare the two institutions and identify the ways in which they have taken steps
to keep up with modern museological and discourse.
To begin, preservation and interpretation, the concepts that form the basis of museums, originates

Technology Is The Weapon Of Choice
Since the beginning of time, mankind has been at war with himself for every imaginable reason. In
2700 BC Mesopotamia, the armies of Sumer and Elam went to war. During this first recorded conflict,
the bow was the weapon of choice. Over the next 4,700 years, the character of war has changed
dramatically with the introduction of new technologies such as iron, steel, and gunpowder. Today the
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) is the weapon of choice. For the U.S. military, the use of UAV
technology accelerated in the 1990 s and continued through the past 14 years of sustained conflict. In
2002, the United States had 167 UAVs and over 7,000 just 10 years later. Although UAVs do not
require a human in the cockpit, they are still controlled by a human who makes flight and targeting
decisions. However, technology is leading developers to push the envelope and develop weapon
systems that have the ability to act without human input or intervention, in all domains of warfare,
which like the airplane in WWI, could have dramatic implications for the character of future wars.
In 2010, the Department of Defense said that autonomy was the single greatest theme for advancing
modern unmanned systems. General Robert Cone, Director of the U.S. Army s Training and Doctrine

My life has changed positively... and I can confidently say that.
A few years ago, this statement would have been utterly false or perhaps something else I d say under

had become second nature to me, lying. I could say anything after having a few glasses, or a bottle, or

people around me, or whether they affected them. All I cared about was myself and the temporary

Proctor and Gamble (Scope Case Analysis)
Procter Gamble
Scope
Case Analysis:
Scope, a green mint tasting mouthwash, was positions as a great tasting mouth refreshing brand that
provided bad breath protection. It is the first brand that offers both effective protection against bad
breath and a better taste than other mouthwashes.
Scope was introduced in 1967 by Procter gamble, which is one of the most successful companies in
the world. P G philosophy is to provide superior quality and value that best fills the needs of the
consumers; it was recognized as a leader in the Canadian packaged good industry.

So her specific task was to prepare a marketing plan for P G mouthwash business for the next 3 years.
In preparing the 3 year plan for Scope, a team has been formed within P G to examine various options,
the team included individuals from product development, manufacturing, sales, finance, market
research and advertising operations. The team was faced by two options that are: 1 Launching a new
line extension positioned against Plax as a recent entry into the market. 2 Looking at claims other than
breath that might be used by scope such as plaque reduction.
In the case of product development, product tests were made on Scope, product development
department has demonstrated that Scope reduced plaque better than brushing alone because of the
antibacterial ingredients in it. So the PDD has recently developed a new pre brushing rinse product
that performed as well as Plax but didn t work any better than Plax in removing plaque. The key
benefit of this recently launched product is that it tastes better than Plax. However, PDD s preference
was to not launch a new product, but instead to add plaque reduction claims to Scope. Since the basic
argument was that it is better to protect the business that P G was already in, than to launch a
completely new entry.
As for the case of sales, the sales people had noticed that

Impact Of Mao Zedong
Mao Zedong was a military leader who led his country s Cultural Revolution. Zedong s revolution
started in 1966, in China. He started his revolution with his new ideas. His ideas included The Great
Leap Forward, struggle sessions, and The Red Guards. All these new ideas were to make China a
communist country. These failed attempts made Zedong s ideas unsuccessful for China. The Great
Leap Forward included many of ideas. Mao Zedong wanted to increase production in farm and
families. He urged everyone to produce steel to industrialize China as a country. This breakdown of
the Chinese economy caused the government to begin to repeal the Great Leap Forward program. The
Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution had negative impacts on the Chinese society. People
were persecuted as a way to enforce his ideas on Chinese people. Mao s biggest goal was to change
China s industrial economy into an agrarian one.
Zedong used struggle sessions to enforce his new ideas for China. Struggle sessions were a form of
torture and public humiliation. This was used by the Communist Party of China Mao Zedong s era.
Struggle sessions were to shape the public s opinion. The victim of this idea, was forced to admit to
crimes in front of a crowd. The crowd would verbally and physically abuse the victim until the victim

The Hardy Weinberg Principle, No Natural Selection
Design
Research Question:
If all five conditions mentioned within the Hardy Weinberg Principle are met (random mating, large
populations, no mutations, no migration, no natural selection), will the population remain in genetic
equilibrium?
Background Information:
The Hardy Weinberg Principle or the Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium Model states that allele and
genotype frequencies in a population will remain constant from generation to generation in the
absence of other evolutionary influences (Version, T.). In order for genetic equilibrium to be
maintained, five conditions must be met:
Random Mating: all individuals within a population must have an equal opportunity to pass on their
alleles
Large Populations: random changes in allele ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
p2 + 2pq + q2 = 1 ; where p2 represents the homozygous dominant genotype, 2pq represents the
heterozygous genotype, and q2 represents the homozygous recessive genotype
This equation is used to calculate the genotype frequency, so 1 = 100% of the population.
Hypothesis:
In a large, randomly mating population where mutations, migration, and natural selection are no
longer viable, the allele and genotypic frequencies will remain at equilibrium. If any of these
conditions are changed, then the allele and genotype frequencies will be unable to maintain genetic
equilibrium.
Variables:
Independent Variable(s) Alleles (only 2 options)
Dependent Variable(s) Allele Frequency, Genotype Frequency
Controlled Variable(s) The control group is the first group of data taken with the cheerios where there
is random mating, large population (100 alleles), no mutations, no migration, and no natural selection.
Control of Variables:
In this experiment, in order to conform to the requirements of the Hardy Weinberg Principle, it is
necessary to control five differing factors:
1. Random Mating
2. Large Populations
3. Absence of Mutations
4. Absence of Migration
5. Absence of Natural Selection
In order to control all of these factors throughout the experiment, one must randomly select the alleles
(cheerios), must have a larger population size

Severe Anorexia Nervosa
Oftentimes, Anorexia Nervosa is classified as a psychological disorder and is not viewed as an
instigator of communication disorders. Besides the obvious negative consequences of eating disorders,
anorexia can cause an onset of dysphagia. Anorexia is a terrible disease and the annual death rate is
approximately 12 times higher than the death rate of all causes of death among females ages 15 to 24

Evidence And Physical Evidence
INTRODUCTION
Evidence plays a major role usually in trail of a case. Several types of evidence can be used. Evidence
can be divided into two categories Testimonial evidence and Physical evidence. Physical evidence is
one type of such evidence; this evidence can be brought to court room for observation during trails.
This is the most important evidence. Physical evidence is also known as real evidence, they consist
tangible article from tiny microscopic to macroscopic evidence from large building to molecules in air.
It can be in solid, gas or liquid form. Advances in forensic science have increased the use of physical

Physical evidence has certain physical dimensions like shape, size, width, state, pattern etc. Such
evidence can be recorded, collected, preserved by using different techniques. Physical evidence can be
also called as material, indirect, circumstantial evidence based on different context.
TYPES OF PHYSICAL EVIDENCES
It s impossible to list down the physical evidence because this evidence depends upon the nature,
manner and the location of the crime committed. But few physical evidences r listed out with can be

The topic of war is hard to imagine from the perspective of one who hasn t experienced it. Literature
makes it accessible for the reader to explore the themes of war. Owen and Remarque both dipcik what
war was like for one who has never gone through it. Men in both All Quiet on the Western Front and
Dulce Et Decorum experience betrayal of youth, horrors of war and feelings of camaraderie.
While the young men at the ages of eighteen to twenty signed up for the war they believed that they
were going to have a well off time, meanwhile the older generation is betraying them. The men that

The Counter-Insurgency Strategy Essay
The hearts and mind (HAM) theory is identified as winning the hearts and minds of the population
which is a technique based on the implementation of the counter insurgency (COIN) strategy of
persuading the population to support the government and reject the insurgents. The counter insurgency
(COIN) strategy as outlined by President Obama and General Petraeus s most closely embrace is the
heart and minds (HAM) theory. President Obama speech identified the United States strategic
approach with Afghanistan in three elements. The three core elements addressed by President Obama

The population centric counterinsurgency rely heavily on the empowerment of the population.
The first tenet of COIN aligns with the first two statements of COMISAF s Counterinsurgency
Guidance. The primary focus is on the people and earning their trust. The people function as the
internal intelligence for the government and support the goal of eliminating, harboring and providing
safe havens for the enemy. This effort is supported by the United States Soldiers and its allies taking
up residence in the community with the Afghanistan people. This also reinforces President Obama
core element of a civilian surge to reinforce positive action. It is imperative to get the people out in the
public view and not living in fear. Constant and daily interaction is essential in gathering local
intelligence on what is going in the government in hopes of understanding how the people feel and
think about their leadership. Communication is helpful but being a good listener is an invaluable asset
to information gathering. Secondly, the United States military goal is to support the fostering of
renewed trust of the Afghanistan people in their government and security forces. The ultimate goal is
that the Afghanistan people reject the insurgents and stop them from infiltrating their infrastructure.

A Study On The And Properties Of Aluminium Alloys
CHAPTER 3 LITERATURE REVIEW
3.1 Introduction
The Al Zn Mg series aluminium alloys (7xxx) are the heat treatable alloys and widely applied as large
structural components in navigation and transportation facilities, due to good combination of hardness,
high strength and fracture toughness [1 6]. The use of Sc (scandium) to achieve grain refinement has
recently received great attention. The microstructures and properties of aluminium alloys are strongly
affected by adding small quantities of scandium. Scandium additions in excess of 0.55wt.% (i.e.,
hypereutectic) are very effective in grain refinement, suggesting that the primary ScAl3 phase serves
as an effective grain nucleant [7 9].
The effect of a Sc addition will of course depend on the composition of the alloy. The additions of Sc
in aluminium alloy appear to reduce hot tearing and shrinkage porosity. Hot shortness increase with
increase in Zn but decrease with increase in Mg content [10, 11]. The process of precipitation in the Al
Zn Mg alloy system is quite complex. The aged structure and the kinetics of ageing depend on both
the Zn and Mg concentration and the temperatures of solution and ageing treatments. As the Sc
contents increases within the specified solubility in the solid solution, the grains virtually do not
disintegrate. The maximum solubility of scandium increases from 0.35 to 0.6 wt.% [12, 13]. When the
amount of scandium exceeds the eutectic content and, consequently, there appear primary particles of

Modern Times And City Lights Essay
The role of women in Modern Times and City Lights is compelling compared to the roles of men in
the films. Chaplin uses women as a set piece to set up jokes for him and other male characters, and
drops little sexist aspects into what is the larger body of the two films. Chaplin uses women to
diversify the types of jokes he can use and the aspect of a woman character in the film can alter what
he does, where he can go, and it modifies the tramps moods throughout the films In both of the films
we watched Chaplin uses the aspect of women to set up the tramps jokes. In Modern Times Chaplin
embraces the aspect of women being the second lead character, after the tramp, and sets up most of the

In the film, Chaplin also puts the blind girl and her grandmother in a place where they are struggling
to pay the bills. Even though the tramp is the tramp and poor as well he gets the money from the rich
man. This could be viewed as a sexist little bit of the movie as the women can t pay the rent because
she doesn t make enough money to support them and then a man comes in and saves the day even
though the man is in a much more dire situation than the two girls. Through all of that we still never
see how it turns out between the two. After the woman gets the surgery and finally sees the tramp for
who he really is we see her wondering what to do next. Before we get to that moment we see the
woman eyeing all of the men that are wearing nice clothes and appear wealthy, and doesn t know what
to do when the poor tramp reveals that it is him who gave her that money. This could be interpreted as
woman are attracted to money and don t really care what s in your heart.
The main woman in Modern Times is opposite of the woman in City Lights. Just like the Tramp she
gets into trouble and is poor just like him. Compared to the other movie it seems like this girl is a
much better fit for the tramps character than the woman in City Lights. This girl sparks scenes, jokes,
and opportunities for the tramp while the other woman was mainly just a romantic set piece. However,
he still uses women as set

Joel s Imaginary Actions: Spotlighting in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
While music always plays a significant part to convey emotions in film, light can be used just as
effectively. The use of a special lighting technique is very noticeable in the memory scenes of Michel
Gondry s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. A major part of Eternal Sunshine is spent inside the
protagonist Joel s mind. He is in the process of deleting his memory of Clementine, who was his
girlfriend for two years. Two main lighting styles are used throughout the scenes which play inside
Joel s mind. On one hand, natural bright lighting and on the other hand a darker setting with only one

other version of Joel is part of the memory and does not react to the Joel we are following around.
However, Mierzwiak acknowledges the Joel who enters the memory and starts talking to him. This
whole scene is only lit by one spotlight moving back and forth in a tracking shot between the three
characters. (Eternal Sunshine, 55:59 56:44) It is again, an event which has not happened in real life,
but is just part of Joel s imagination. This could not have been the way Joel perceives this specific
memory, as Sperb called it, as Mierzwiak is saying things which would not make sense in the real life
scenario. Joel is now contacting the memory he has of Mierzwiak instead of screaming his name out

Social Confinement in Austen’s Sense and Sensibility
When Charlotte Bronte said of Jane Austen s novels I should hardly like to live with their ladies and
gentlemen, in their elegant but confined houses she was referring to the physical confinement of an
interior versus an exterior setting. This confinement of the setting mirrors the social confinement of a
woman versus a man in the societal structure at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century.
While Austen studies the societal position of women in most of her novels, her early work Sense and
Sensibility, is perhaps the most interesting to take into consideration when reviewing the issue of
confinement. In it Austen juxtaposes the freedom of the countryside exteriors with the confinement of
the city s interiors. These settings serve as a backdrop for the exploration of two female characters
whose social status has been set back as a result of the primogeniture of the time.
Austen s novels have always been lauded for their social commentary and critique. The most common
issue they depict is the dependency of women in society upon men, specifically their reliance on
marriage as a source of income. The characters of Marianne and Elinor in Sense and Sensibility are
two such characters, who due to their estate and income being inherited by their stepbrother, are left to
their own devices of securing a favorable marriage. The two sisters, so different in character, mirror
the contrast of the depictions of interiors and nature in the novel. The free spirited

are now failing the test? In addition to the testing of applicants, fashion industries randomly tests its
employees throughout the year. Last year in the 400 random tests conducted, 14 employees failed the
test. Would it be reasonable to conclude that less than 5% of the employees are not able to pass the
random drug test? (a) p = 14/220 = 0.06364, q = 1 p = 0.9364 SE = sqrt(pq/n) = sqrt(0.06364 *
0.9364/220) = 0.0164 For 99% confidence, z = 2.576 The 99% CI for the proportion of applicants who
fail the test is given by [p z * SE, p + z * SE] = [0.06364 2.576 * 0.0164, 0.06364 + 2.576 * 0.0164] =
[0.0214, 0.106] = [2.14%, 10.6%] Since 10% falls within the 99% CI but near the upper limit of
10.6%, it may not be reasonable to conclude that more than 10% are now failing the test. (b) p =
14/400 = 0.035, q = 1 p = 0.965 SE = sqrt(pq/n) = sqrt(0.035 * 0.965/400) = 0.0092 For 99%
confidence, z = 2.576 The 99% CI for the proportion of employees who fail the test is given by [p z *
SE, p + z * SE] = [0.035 2.576 * 0.0092, 0.035 + 2.576 * 0.0092] = [0.0113, 0.0587] = [1.13%,
5.87%] Since 5% falls within the 99% CI, we may conclude that less than 5 % are now

WHAT ROLE DOES RELIGION, MORALITY, AND WORLDVIEW PLAY IN THE CREATION
OF PUBLIC POLICY?
Public policy is a statement that defines the procedures of an institution for the achievement of
consistency in decision making. It is the result of a political process, which involves enacting laws and
regulations to enable the addressing of public concern in a constitutional manner. The efficiency of a
government is founded on the presence of proper and reliable policy making procedures. The process
of policy creation is thus the implementation of the constitution by the employment of certain causes
of action and resource ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Indeed, the conviction of religion gives humans the ability to stand against anyone and anything thus
making religious groups a force to reckon. Religion is a symbol that acts to establish powerful,
pervasive, and long lasting moods and motivation in men formulating conceptions of a general order
of existence and clothing these conceptions with such an aura of factuality that they seem uniquely
realistic. Examples of this influence include the Islamic movement, the strong influence the Pope has
on the Catholic movement, and the impact the Pentecostal movement had on the US government. The
worldview contributes to the aspects of living, which include lifestyle, customs, thoughts,
philosophies, beliefs, and culture. These aspects seem to change with different generations causing
even greater conflict amongst interest groups in policymaking. Indeed, individuals in opposite factions
or groups may agree based on facts but sharply differ on conclusions simply because of their different
worldviews. A classic case of the worldviews influence is gay

Feminism
FEMINISM
Introduction to Sociology
Feminism
Belief in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes.
The movement organized around this belief.
Feminism
Feminist Theory is an outgrowth of the general movement to empower women worldwide.
Feminism can be defined as a recognition and critique of male supremacy combined with efforts to
change it.
Feminism
The goals of feminism are:
To demonstrate the importance of women
To reveal that historically women have been subordinate to men
To bring about gender equity.
Feminism
Simply put:
Feminists fight for the equality of women and argue that women should share equally in society s
opportunities and scare resources.

Society s Influence
Fashion and the film industry are two huge influences on societal expectations that women display
their bodies sexually.
The sexual revolution liberated women from the
Victorian of modesty but also demanded a commitment to diet and beauty.
Doing Gender
Many feminist theorists believe that an individual is labeled at birth as a member of a sex category,
either male of female, and from that point on, is held to acting accordingly.
Gender is not something that one has or something that one is; rather, it is something that one does.
Gender as Social Structure
Risman does not accept the criteria of nature as a way to distinguish behavior expectations.
She is especially upset by the field of sociobiology.
Gender as Social Structure
By assigning people to one or two categoriesmale or female society has created difference between
them.
Risman feels that genders strongest influence is found at the interactional level, and therein lies the
deepest liability for the continuation of inequality in American family life
Relevancy
Feminism can be defined as a social movement and an ideology in support of the idea that a larger
share of scarce resources should be allocated to women. Feminist believe that women should enjoy the
same rights in society as men and that should share equity in society s opportunities.

  • 2. Summary Of The Film The Linguists The film The Linguists follows linguists Gregory Anderson and David Harrison on their journey to learn about and document endangered languages in Bolivia, India, Arizona, and Siberia. Through their quest, they are able to interact with some of the few remaining speakers of languages that are near death and they manage to make an impact on how these communities view their heritage language. Focusing on the moribund languages of Siberia and Arizona, it becomes evident that speakers of the heritage language feel a love for the language and the culture it represents, but went through periods of oppression and embarrassment for being speakers of a minority language that ultimately shaped their attitudes on the language. The film highlights the Chemehuevi language of a Native American tribe in Arizona, where there is only one remaining speaker. The speaker is forced to repeat words to himself and replay recordings in Chemehuevi over and over again so that he can keep the language alive, since there is no one else who knows the language. • 7. The Impact Of Wearing Formal Clothing On Cognitive Processing Article Analysis Assignment In their study, the authors endeavored to examine the impact of wearing formal clothing on cognitive processing. The authors want to explore a difference, if any, between the abstract thought processes of a participant wearing formal clothes. As for their hypothesis, they suspect that wearing formal clothing induces more abstract cognitive processing. (Slepian 1) According to the article, events that are psychologically distant are conceived of relatively abstractly, while events that are psychologically near are conceived of relatively concretely. In layman s terms, the authors are suggesting that increases of social comfort encourages concrete thinking while less social comfort encourages abstract thinking. Therefore, because formal clothing creates social distance, the authors, in their respective opinion, have good reason to suppose that the bearing of formal clothing will increase abstract thinking. The researchers conducted five different studies, all of which used undergraduates as participants of the study. For the first study, the participants were sixty undergraduates and 78% were female. In the study, researchers studied the relationship between clothing and abstract processing, while accounting for the covariant, socioeconomic status. Participants were asked to rate the formality of their currently worn clothing in relation to their peers on a scale from 50 to +50. This pattern brought about many changes and phases in his poetry. Even Eliot s attitude was reflected in his work. A quote from T. S. Eliot: The Man and His Work states, Eliot was a man with the highest standards in his poetry, his critisism, and his behavior to others. ( Spender 34). Perhaps much of this can be attributed to his birth toward the end of the Victorian Era. Eliot s background also had a major effect on his writing style. Eliot published many religious works including Idea of a Christian Society. The plays that Eliot wrote in this period reflected a spiritual content as well as many journeys and tasks. His works also became more political. He spoke of how corrupt and apathetic the new age had become. His new political views were probably sparked from his life as a British citizen. Analyzation of Eliot s life provides great insight on why his writing was divided into these four periods. Eliot s demeanor was also evident in his work. Many said that Eliot often had a very serious look about him. He was very sophisticated in his speech and actions, and when he was humorous, it was in a very strange way. He often would make remarks that made very little sense. Both sides of his personality showed up in his work. Most of his writing was serious in nature, but sometimes it was amusing such as his Old Possum s Book of Practical Cats. Many people know of this work because the very popular musical Cats was based on it. Both of these were filled with nonsense humor. Eliot s influences made a huge impact on his writing. He was completely immersed in the works from Greek and Roman literature, as well as modern and medieval Europe. Eliot also greatly love the Rubiyat of Omar Khayyam. The Divine Timeless Eternity Theory Essay The divine timeless eternity theory is the traditional view pertaining to God and time, but it is by no means the only theory, as there are at least four. My original intention was to compare two views in relation to this topic, however, the complexity of the dialogue has proven difficult. Therefore, I will discuss one theory in depth since I believe it will suffice. In this framework, I will discuss the challenges and varying beliefs with the ideas involved. The goal of my paper is to understand the doctrine of eternity and find how this changes my understanding of God. Then I will discuss how this issue influences my approach to God, and to my ministry. First, however, I will explain the need to uncover the idea of eternalism. We will now proceed. Why might one explore the idea of how God functions in time? It is extremely difficult to ignore questions after they have been asked. Historically, questions have been the cause of councils and creeds that now exist as essential dogmas of the Christian faith. Without questioning, what is real and what actually exists? The difference can only be distinguished by those who question. While it might not be explicitly stated, the idea of eternalism is biblical. The theology of the trinity was a similar idea, where no single passage gives enough evidence to a triune God, but with a proper understanding of the biblical narrative, there is enough truth to discover such a characteristic of God s nature. In 2700 BC Mesopotamia, the armies of Sumer and Elam went to war. During this first recorded conflict, the bow was the weapon of choice. Over the next 4,700 years, the character of war has changed dramatically with the introduction of new technologies such as iron, steel, and gunpowder. Today the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) is the weapon of choice. For the U.S. military, the use of UAV technology accelerated in the 1990 s and continued through the past 14 years of sustained conflict. In 2002, the United States had 167 UAVs and over 7,000 just 10 years later. Although UAVs do not require a human in the cockpit, they are still controlled by a human who makes flight and targeting decisions. So the PDD has recently developed a new pre brushing rinse product that performed as well as Plax but didn t work any better than Plax in removing plaque. The key benefit of this recently launched product is that it tastes better than Plax. However, PDD s preference was to not launch a new product, but instead to add plaque reduction claims to Scope. His ideas included The Great Leap Forward, struggle sessions, and The Red Guards. All these new ideas were to make China a communist country. These failed attempts made Zedong s ideas unsuccessful for China. The Great Leap Forward included many of ideas. Mao Zedong wanted to increase production in farm and families. He urged everyone to produce steel to industrialize China as a country. This breakdown of the Chinese economy caused the government to begin to repeal the Great Leap Forward program. The Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution had negative impacts on the Chinese society. People were persecuted as a way to enforce his ideas on Chinese people. Mao s biggest goal was to change China s industrial economy into an agrarian one. Zedong used struggle sessions to enforce his new ideas for China. Struggle sessions were a form of torture and public humiliation. This was used by the Communist Party of China Mao Zedong s era. Struggle sessions were to shape the public s opinion. The Hardy Weinberg Principle, No Natural Selection Design Research Question: If all five conditions mentioned within the Hardy Weinberg Principle are met (random mating, large populations, no mutations, no migration, no natural selection), will the population remain in genetic equilibrium? Background Information: The Hardy Weinberg Principle or the Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium Model states that allele and genotype frequencies in a population will remain constant from generation to generation in the absence of other evolutionary influences (Version, T.). A Study On The And Properties Of Aluminium Alloys CHAPTER 3 LITERATURE REVIEW 3.1 Introduction The Al Zn Mg series aluminium alloys (7xxx) are the heat treatable alloys and widely applied as large structural components in navigation and transportation facilities, due to good combination of hardness, high strength and fracture toughness [1 6]. The use of Sc (scandium) to achieve grain refinement has recently received great attention. The microstructures and properties of aluminium alloys are strongly affected by adding small quantities of scandium. Scandium additions in excess of 0.55wt.% (i.e., hypereutectic) are very effective in grain refinement, suggesting that the primary ScAl3 phase serves as an effective grain nucleant [7 9]. The effect of a Sc addition will of course depend on the composition of the alloy. The additions of Sc in aluminium alloy appear to reduce hot tearing and shrinkage porosity. Hot shortness increase with increase in Zn but decrease with increase in Mg content [10, 11]. The process of precipitation in the Al Zn Mg alloy system is quite complex. The aged structure and the kinetics of ageing depend on both the Zn and Mg concentration and the temperatures of solution and ageing treatments. As the Sc contents increases within the specified solubility in the solid solution, the grains virtually do not disintegrate. The maximum solubility of scandium increases from 0.35 to 0.6 wt.% [12, 13]. When the amount of scandium exceeds the eutectic content and, consequently, there appear primary particles of ... • 38. Social Confinement in Austen’s Sense and Sensibility When Charlotte Bronte said of Jane Austen s novels I should hardly like to live with their ladies and gentlemen, in their elegant but confined houses she was referring to the physical confinement of an interior versus an exterior setting. This confinement of the setting mirrors the social confinement of a woman versus a man in the societal structure at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century. While Austen studies the societal position of women in most of her novels, her early work Sense and Sensibility, is perhaps the most interesting to take into consideration when reviewing the issue of confinement. In it Austen juxtaposes the freedom of the countryside exteriors with the confinement of the city s interiors. These settings serve as a backdrop for the exploration of two female characters whose social status has been set back as a result of the primogeniture of the time. Austen s novels have always been lauded for their social commentary and critique. The most common issue they depict is the dependency of women in society upon men, specifically their reliance on marriage as a source of income. The characters of Marianne and Elinor in Sense and Sensibility are two such characters, who due to their estate and income being inherited by their stepbrother, are left to their own devices of securing a favorable marriage.
