The metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET, MOS-FET, or MOS FET) is a type of field-effect transistor (FET). It has an insulated gate, whose voltage determines the conductivity of the device. This ability to change conductivity with the amount of applied voltage can be used for amplifying or switching electronic signals. Although FET is sometimes used when referring to MOSFET devices, other types of field-effect transistors also exist.

JFET
- The JFET is a voltage-controlled device that uses an electric field to control the flow of current. It has three terminals: the drain, gate, and source.
- There are two types of JFETs: n-channel and p-channel. In an n-channel JFET, applying a negative voltage to the gate reduces the channel width and thereby the current between the drain and source. In a p-channel JFET the behavior is opposite.

There are two types of MOSFETs: depletion mode and enhancement mode. Depletion mode MOSFETs (D-MOSFETs) operate like JFETs when the gate-source voltage is less than 0 volts and like enhancement MOSFETs when the gate-source voltage is greater than 0 volts. Enhancement mode MOSFETs (E-MOSFETs) only operate in enhancement mode, with the drain current increasing as the gate-source voltage rises above the threshold voltage. P-channel MOSFETs are similar but with reversed voltage polarities and current directions.

There are several types of field effect transistors (FETs) that are classified based on their construction and operation:

Energy transmission system for artificial heart
In medical implant systems high efficiency and improving the patient’s mobility. Artificial organs and monitoring devices to be implanted into human body for the extension and the improvement of human lives. The implants must operate inside the body for the considerable period and communicate with outside world wirelessly for exchange of medical data and commands. Rechargeable batteries are recharged remotely through the human skin via inductive links. In my project transformer model, a remote power supply for use in the artificial hearts for easy controllability and high efficiency, which can monitor the charging level of the battery has been designed and implemented. To recharge the battery, the electro-magnetic coupling between primary coil and secondary coil has been used. Primary and secondary windings of the transformer are positioned outside and inside the human body respectively. In such a transformer, the alignment and gap may change with external positioning. The coupling coefficient of the transformer is also varying, and so are the tool to large leakage inductances and the mutual inductance. Resonance-tank circuits with varying resonance frequency are formed from the transformer inductors and external capacitors. A control method is proposed to lock the switching frequency at just above the load insensitive frequency for optimized efficiency at heavy loads. Specifically, operation at above resonant of the resonance circuits is maintained under varying coupling coefficient. A transcutaneous power regulator is built and found to perform excellently with high efficiency and tight regulation under variations of the alignment or gap of the transcutaneous transformer load and input voltage.

The UJT is not used as a linear amplifier. It is widely used in the triggering circuits for silicon controlled rectifiers. The low cost per unit, combined with its unique characteristic, have warranted its use in a wide variety of applications like oscillators, pulse generators, saw-tooth generators, triggering circuits, phase control, timing circuits, and voltage- or current-regulated supplies.[1] The original unijunction transistor types are now considered obsolete, but a later multi-layer device, the programmable unijunction transistor (PUT), is still widely available.

- 2. MOSFET’S There are 2 types of MOSFET’s: • Depletion mode MOSFET (D-MOSFET) • N-channel D-Type MOSFET • P-channel D-Type MOSFET • Enhancement Mode MOSFET (E-MOSFET)
- 3. DEPLETION MODE MOSFET CONSTRUCTION • The Drain (D) and Source (S) leads connect to the to n-doped regions • These N-doped regions are connected by an n-channel • This n-channel is connected to the Gate (G) via a thin insulating layer of SiO2 • The n-doped material lies on a p-doped substrate that may have an additional terminal connection called SS
- 4. BASIC OPERATION D-MOSFET may be biased to operate in two modes: • The Depletion mode or The Enhancement mode
- 5. D-MOSFET DEPLETION MODE OPERATION The transfer characteristics are similar to the JFET In Depletion Mode operation: When VGS = 0V, ID = IDSS When VGS < 0V, ID < IDSS When VGS > 0V, ID > IDSS The formula used to plot the Transfer Curve, is: 2 GS D DSS P V I = I 1- V
- 6. D-MOSFET ENHANCEMENT MODE OPERATION Enhancement Mode operation In this mode, the transistor operates with VGS > 0V, and ID increases above IDSS Shockley’s equation, the formula used to plot the Transfer Curve, still applies but VGS is positive: 2 GS D DSS P V I = I 1- V
- 7. p-Channel Depletion Mode MOSFET The p-channel Depletion mode MOSFET is similar to the n-channel except that the voltage polarities and current directions are reversed

- 13. Basic Operation The Enhancement mode MOSFET only operates in the enhancement mode. VGS is always positive IDSS = 0 when VGS < VT As VGS increases above VT, ID increases If VGS is kept constant and VDS is increased, then ID saturates (IDSS) The saturation level, VDSsat is reached.
- 14. p-Channel Enhancement Mode MOSFETs The p-channel Enhancement mode MOSFET is similar to the n-channel except that the voltage polarities and current directions are reversed.
