Mentoring Agreements
Do some research around mentoring agreements:
What is the agreement for?
What should the agreement include?
Why is an agreement important?
If you find a formal agreement then you can bring it in….
You would still need to write about what they are for and
why they are important!

ACTIVITY 1
• Complete the task given to you and match up
the statements under the correct headings.
• Statements fit under either Formal or Informal

FORMAL INFORMAL
A coordinator manages the process Mentoring is managed solely by the mentoring
partners
Partnering is a facilitated process with
the mentee having the opportunity to
chose their mentor
Mentoring partners are matched by chance
with the mentor choosing the mentee
Specific aims are directed towards
achieving a goal which the mentee has
clarified

by the mentor
Meeting places are arranged formally in

Draft your own Mentoring Agreement
• Use an A3 sheet of paper and work in small groups
to create a draft Mentoring Agreement (This doesn’t
need to be filled in – It should look like a blank
form)
• Think about all of the things you should include
• Also think about the wording of the document
(Professional)

• Swap your agreement with another group
• You will peer assess their agreement and provide
written developmental feedback (What was
good & what could be improved?)
You now need to photocopy this for evidence.
Each person in your group needs a copy
IMPORTANCE OF MAKING AN
AGREEMENT 2.3
• So both parties know where each other stand
• Both parties know what each others role is
• Both parties know their boundaries
• To set some clear guidelines, rules and regulations
• To have a sense of direction
• To have a clear goal
WHAT MAY HAPPEN IF THERE WAS NO AGREEMENT?

In small groups
Do you know any of the different types of Mentoring? If not,
do some more research.
You need to think of or find at least 3 different types.
For each one – write down a reason why someone might use
that type of Mentoring, rather than a different type
Example: One to One Mentoring – Personal,
confidential
• One – to – one
• Group mentoring (or mentoring circles)
• Peer mentoring
• Business mentoring
• E-mentoring
• Special Project

HOMEWORK
Do some research around what types of things a Mentor may need support with,
in their role & where they may be able to get the support from – Internal (Inside
their organisation) & External (Outside their organisation)
LO 3 – Be able to identify support available to a mentor
• AC 3.1 – Identify situations where a mentor may need to seek support (At
least 3 situations)
• AC 3.2 & 3.3 – Identify the person that the mentor can directly consult for
support and state the type of support the person can provide
• AC 3.4 & 3.5 – Identify others (at least 2 others) that can provide support for
a mentor and state the type of support that those others can provide.
• For example; Think about things that might not be a mentor’s speciality or
above their role – Where and who could you go to for information/support
and what they might be able to offer you to help you in your role?
This will be set on ItsLearning – Week 3 folder
Dave (Tutor for next week) will have access to ItsLearning to check how you
have got on. You will clarify and re-cap in next week’s session.

  • 5. YOUR HOMEWORK WAS…. Mentoring Agreements Do some research around mentoring agreements: What is the agreement for? What should the agreement include? Why is an agreement important? If you find a formal agreement then you can bring it in…. You would still need to write about what they are for and why they are important! This was set on ItsLearning – Week 2 folder
  • 6. ACTIVITY 1 • Complete the task given to you and match up the statements under the correct headings. • Statements fit under either Formal or Informal
  • 7. FORMAL AND INFORMAL FORMAL INFORMAL A coordinator manages the process Mentoring is managed solely by the mentoring partners Partnering is a facilitated process with the mentee having the opportunity to chose their mentor Mentoring partners are matched by chance with the mentor choosing the mentee Specific aims are directed towards achieving a goal which the mentee has clarified Non specific, non existent aims are suggested by the mentor Meeting places are arranged formally in accordance within the guidelines Informal mentoring happens regular Timing are set Happens whenever and wherever Do you think there could be problems with both types of agreement?
  • 8. ACTIVITY 2 Mentoring Agreements (2.1 & 2.2) Now you know what a FORMAL mentoring agreement contains…. Discuss…. In pairs • What you think an INFORMAL MENTOR AGREEMENT is • What is the difference between the two?
  • 9. A MENTORING AGREEMENT • Commitment • Clear goals, procedures and limitations • Clear expectations (on both sides) • Success criteria that can be measured (SMART) • Ground Rules • Confidentiality • Boundaries
  • 10. WORKBOOK • Page 8 – Name in grey box • You should have met 2.1, 2.2 & 2.3 on ItsLearning so please put a cross through those and put a statement on to say they are met on Week 2 of ItsLearning

ACTIVITY 3 Draft your own Mentoring Agreement • Use an A3 sheet of paper and work in small groups to create a draft Mentoring Agreement (This doesn’t need to be filled in – It should look like a blank form) • Think about all of the things you should include • Also think about the wording of the document (Professional) 20 MINS
  • 13. Peer Assessment/Feedback • Swap your agreement with another group • You will peer assess their agreement and provide written developmental feedback (What was good & what could be improved?) You now need to photocopy this for evidence. Each person in your group needs a copy
  • 14. IMPORTANCE OF MAKING AN AGREEMENT 2.3 • So both parties know where each other stand • Both parties know what each others role is • Both parties know their boundaries • To set some clear guidelines, rules and regulations • To have a sense of direction • To have a clear goal WHAT MAY HAPPEN IF THERE WAS NO AGREEMENT?
  • 15. Activity 4 In small groups Do you know any of the different types of Mentoring? If not, do some more research. You need to think of or find at least 3 different types. For each one – write down a reason why someone might use that type of Mentoring, rather than a different type Example: One to One Mentoring – Personal, confidential

HOMEWORK Do some research around what types of things a Mentor may need support with, in their role & where they may be able to get the support from – Internal (Inside their organisation) & External (Outside their organisation) LO 3 – Be able to identify support available to a mentor • AC 3.1 – Identify situations where a mentor may need to seek support (At least 3 situations) • AC 3.2 & 3.3 – Identify the person that the mentor can directly consult for support and state the type of support the person can provide • AC 3.4 & 3.5 – Identify others (at least 2 others) that can provide support for a mentor and state the type of support that those others can provide. • For example; Think about things that might not be a mentor’s speciality or above their role – Where and who could you go to for information/support and what they might be able to offer you to help you in your role? This will be set on ItsLearning – Week 3 folder Dave (Tutor for next week) will have access to ItsLearning to check how you have got on. You will clarify and re-cap in next week’s session.
