The document discusses potential media groups to distribute the author's music magazine called "1950". Bauer Media Group is experienced with similar magazines but may not want competition for their own magazine "Q", which 1950 is based on. Therefore, Time Inc. would be a better fit as they have over 90 magazines but none directly comparable to 1950, unlike their magazine NME which focuses on rock music only. The author believes Time Inc. would be more open to distributing 1950 without competition concerns.
2. What kind of media institution would
distribute your media product and why?
Bauer Media Group could distribute my magazine as
it has experience with magazines like mine as they
distribute ‘Q’ which means that they know that they
would know what the consumers like and how to
advertise my magazine. Bauer Media Group also
have 300 different magazines in 15 different
countries this means that they know how to sell
magazines and make money. I know this by the fact
that Bauer Media Group made over $2 billion last
years.
The only issue with Bauer Media Group distributing
my magazine, 1950, is that as they distribute ‘Q’
which was the magazine I mainly based my
magazine on, therefore Bauer Media Group might
not want to distribute my magazine as it will could
be a competition for ‘Q’. This means that they
probably wouldn’t want to put aside budget that
could be given to ‘Q’ to ‘1950’ as it would be
detrimental to ‘Q’. 1950 would have to prove to
Bauer Media Group that it sells before they decided
to distribute it.
After reviewing this I think that Time INC would be
the best fit for my magazine as it doesn’t have any
magazines that are exactly like mine. It has over 90
different magazines and are based in New York,
therefore they have lots of different connections
within the media world. It does distribute NME
which is similar to my magazine but it has a main
focus on the Rock genre, whereas my magazine,
although my magazine is loosely based on the genre
of Rock, it is more general towards the music
industry. Therefore I feel that this would be the best
for Time INC to distribute my magazine as they have
experience distributing music magazines but the
music magazine they distribute wouldn’t be in
competition with my magazine much as they are
aimed towards different people.
3. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you
feel you have learnt in the progression from it to
the product?
Looking back at my preliminary task, I have learnt how to
make my product that looks a lot more professional. I did this
by learning how to cut a picture out and put it on the blank
background which makes the picture look a lot more like a
professional photo-shoot. I have also learnt how to make the
text to fit around the picture. Since the preliminary task I
have improved the placing of text which means that it is
easier to read and shows the importance of the stories. I have
also learnt the ways that print media products are distributed
and how the development in media has changed the way that
people report about anything including the music industry
which changed the way that I decided what to include in my
magazine and helped my decide what stories to put on the
front cover as they link to what people want to read about. I
found these things through the audience research that I did.
