How does you attract/address your audience? Question Five Lauren Pratt
I addressed my audience through the choice of layouts, colour schemes, cover lines, images and other important features such as boosts and subscriptions. For example I followed the layout and style of a Q magazine which I analysed in my textual analysis. I decided to follow it’s house style because I wanted my magazine to look realistic and effective. For example I looked at the positioning and meanings of cover lines and images and followed them when I created my product. This would appeal to my target audience because it’s clear and eye catching and as I found out from doing my focus groups, my target audience like magazines which stand out clearly and look effective. I used a vibrant colour scheme, black, red and white as they are bold colours and clearly attract attention and they also portray a sense of loudness which represents my magazine which would help address my audience.   My product immediately a wares you that it is aiming at the younger generation as the cover lines are about young and new bands who are also relatively young. The images again reach out to this specific audience because they portray that certain look and style for example, the main Polaroid image on the double page spread, includes a group of young people smiling and close together which will appeal to my target audience as their all young and the band looks interesting which my target audience will be able to relate to.
I also challenged typical forms and conventions of a pop rock music magazine, as they mainly have males dominating their fronts covers and articles. So I decided to challenge these conventions and have a female dominating the page, this helps target the females of my target audience well, as they will be able to relate to the images and article. I also attracted my audience by the double page spread article. I thought carefully about how to address my audience through this, I thought about the content and language of my article and thought about what would appeal to my target audience. I decided to write an article in an interview form, I did this because most articles in Q Magazine are in interview form and this institution is really successful and I wanted my magazine to achieve high success too. The language used was very informal and chatty which would appeal to my target audience as they would be able to relate as the artist is in the same age range. As my target audience would probably be students I made my magazine at a low price of £2.90 as this is affordable in disposable income. I put the issue number as a high number, so it shows the audience that the magazine is successful and has a good circulation. I also added boosts and subscriptions as features in my magazine, I did this to help attract my audience because I found out from my focus groups that my audience like these kind of features and increase the chances of purchase.   My magazine ‘M’ Top selling ‘Q’
The initial attraction to the magazine is one which is used by all magazines, by using huge images, block writing and high attracting colours. It’s colours like red and black used together which stand out to the human eyes, the black and the red look good together as they stand out from one another and the title itself is white against a red background which stands out. The font on the front cover was also an important factor as it was the clearest, bold font I found. Similar to Q, I tested out many fonts until my magazine appeared similar to there's. I attracted my audience with cover lines such as “300 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THE ZUTONS”. This attracted people who were interested in ‘pop rock’ music which my magazine is based around. Another thing that attracted my audience was placing the names of bands onto the front cover of my magazine. This would attract the people who know of the bands and artists plus featuring six bands gave a higher chance of a of more people buying my magazine apposed to placing one band with a minority liking it.
