IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR
CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA
PRODUCTS?
Challenge
Instead of my media product targeting a mass audience (like most magazines), it targets mainly a smaller niche audience as it targets mainly males who are under
the age of 25, rather targeting the psychographic profile of over 25’s both male and female and female u25’s. My reason for this is possibly because my magazine
only really features males and the giveaway included contains a brand of clothing called ‘Yeezy’ who are mainly worn by males. In my magazine DPS, I constructed
an album cover which looked very professional which looked well when I put it on my DPS. I did this because it made my magazine look unique as a lot of
magazines would not usually do this and therefore challenges forms and conventions of real media products. Also, the DPS contained a title and was called
‘Devlin @ 8:30’. I did this because the model I used, his concert tour is called ‘Devlin @ 8:30’. I thought that this was a good idea and not a lot of magazines do
this and therefore I made my magazine unique and it challenges forms and conventions of real media products. I also claimed that my magazine is in partnership
with Spotify Premium which is unique way of advertising and not many, if not no magazines use this sort of way of advertising.
Use
In my magazine, I gained inspiration from the magazine ‘Q’ to develop my contents page. The effect made by this was that my magazine looked quite professional rather than if I
was just to make my own structure of a contents page. Also, I looked at the number of articles used in the contents page compared to mine and there was a significant difference
between mine and a professional magazine. As a result, I decided that I would have to create more articles if my magazine was to look more professional. At the end of creating
my contents page I had a total of 20 articles in my magazine. My magazine also contained information about real life musicians which professional magazines would likely contain.
Because of this, it made my magazine look like a famous brand and would seem to gain more interest from other readers as it would contain musicians that a lot of people will
know of. During the construction of my front page, I decided to make my magazine look as appealing as possible. By doing this, I found a real magazine created by ‘VIBE’ with the
rapper ‘Eminem’ on the front of it looking straight down the camera. I decided that my model, Josh, would also use a similar facial expression as Eminem does. Also, I thought
that the way the articles were represented on the front cover looked very eye catching as it seemed to look symmetrical and easy to read. As a result of this, I decided to base my
magazine on that front cover as my magazine would therefore seem easy to read and appealing which would therefore be bought by customers. Furthermore, when I was
constructing my double page spread I came across a double page spread on the musician ‘Lupe Fiasco’. The DPS was very eye catching and the colors were very basic but fit really
well together. Because of this, I decided that I would base the color scheme and format of my DPS on the double page spread of which I discovered. I thought that my double
page spread looked very professional afterwards and that people would also find the DPS appealing.
HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?
• In my magazine, the main social group portrayed in my magazine are teenagers. This is
because the pictures I took to construct my magazine were all 17 years of age. Also, the
articles that I used in my magazine contain a lot of modern slang which older customers
may not be necessarily aware of. Furthermore, my magazine also include new artists that
have recently just became famous so older people may not know of them and therefore
will not be interested in what my magazine has to offer. My magazine also contains
clothing brands which really are meant to target a younger audience. Such as, Kanye
West’s yeezy brand and the weeknd’s brand of clothing with h&m. because of this, the
main social group that I am aiming to target are teenagers. On the other hand, in my
magazine I also contain musicians such as JAY-Z who is an old school hip-hop artist and
therefore, more older customers may be interested as they are more than likely going to
know who he is and will want to read about him. There is also a giveaway in my magazine
that offers a year free of Spotify premium and is also in a partnership with Spotify
premium. By doing this, I am targeting both a younger audience and an older audience as
they may listen to Spotify and may feel intrigued as being in a partnership with such a big
brand may attract a lot of people about what my magazine has to offer. My magazine
also contains social groups of both lack and white races. The photos that I took for which
I used in my magazine were all white but the articles that I feature in my magazine
contain mostly black males, such as ‘Stormzy’ and ‘JAY-Z’.
WHO WOULD BE THE AUDIENCE FOR
YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT?
• I think that my magazine would mainly target the
psychographic profile of males who are under 25,
but my magazine could also target females who
are under 25. As a whole, my magazine targets a
young audience as the genre of my music is
rap/hip-hop and in the last 10 years has influenced
a lot of younger readers and listeners. Also, the
genre has made appearances in the UK charts
which therefore Also gains more listeners to the
genre of the music. Furthermore, my magazine
also includes competitions which would mainly
target a younger audience. For example, a pair of
Kanye west’s brand of shoes which an older group
of people would not find that interesting. Also, my
magazine has articles about certain musicians that
an older audience would not recognise compared
to a younger audience that would.
LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK, WHAT DO YOU FEEL
YOU HAVE LEARNT IN THE PROGRESSION FROM IT TO THE FULL
PRODUCT?
Looking back at my preliminary task I can clearly see a massive improvement. The first thing I learnt was
how to use Photoshop properly. I learnt how to edit photos in more depth rather than just changing the
colour and saturation of the image. I learnt how to sharpen the image, crop and to put the masthead
behind the models head to the give the magazine a more professional look.
I have also learnt that my magazine needed a lot more articles on the front page and the contents page
just so that my magazine would be able to become a popular, recognisable and a successful magazine as
it has more developed structures and information about the articles in the magazine. I also learnt that
having too many colours in your magazine makes it look unattractive and less professional and therefore,
wouldn’t receive any readers as it is not deemed as attractive.
