The magazine would likely be distributed by Mixmag or The Pop magazine distributors because they already distribute similar magazines in the mainstream house music genre. Choosing one of these established distributors would help the magazine reach its target audience since the distributors are familiar with that audience and have experience successfully distributing magazines in that genre. The magazine would likely be sold in mainstream retail stores like grocery stores, music stores, and newsagents where the target clubber/dance audience would shop. It could also be distributed digitally through subscriptions on the magazine's website and promoted on websites like YouTube to reach people beyond retail stores.
1. Question 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
2. First I am going to outline the stages of production that your product would go through if my magazine was a real.
3. I am now going to research into magazine distributors; to find out what company would distribute my product. I am going to look at their magazine portfolio for this and see whether they distribute magazines from the same music genre as mine. I have found out that the research into my two magazines (MIXMAG and POP) that they are distributed by ‘mixmag’ and ‘thepop’. This is a mainstream line and therefore I wanted to aim my magazines towards them. This has influenced my magazine because; it has made me aim my magazine more at my target audience as they are mainstream house music listeners. This would benefit me because I would have someone helping me distribute my magazine, and it would also benefit ‘mixmag’ and ‘thepop’ because they are gaining more money by their new production and customers.
4. Why they might distribute my product think about the types of magazines they already work with and do they know the target audience well? I think that they would distribute my product because it is similar in ways to the magazines that they are already producing, so therefore they know they would get a lot of customers; however it is different in the sense that it would appeals to a large mainstream target audience and they do not own a house music magazine so therefore they would appeal to a wider rage of target audience.
5. Does the company have a good reputation? Why is this important? IS your product mainstream or more niche (this will affect the company that works with it)? Yes the company does have good reputation because they are doing very well and their magazine is well distributed and are looking at different magazines. Also ‘Mixmag’ are looking at a wider rage of audience because before they were looking at a dance audience but now they are looking at a dance and clubber audience so they are appealing to a wider range and therefore gaining more customers.
6. How would my magazine be advertised? How are similar magazines advertised and where are they sold and viewed? My magazine may be sold at places like: ASDA, Morrisons, Premier, hmv and WHSmiths and many more. This is because of the target audience of the magazines. The target audience of the magazines are a clubber and dance tribes. This is therefore a mainsteam music genre and the places that the target audience will shop, which are places like, ASDA, Morrisons, Premier, hmv and WHSmiths
7. How would my product be distributed? Think about changing society as we see the emergence of web 2.0. Alongside shops how else might your product reach people e.g. would people subscribe through the web and have the magazine posted to their house? For Video think about Youtube, festivals, cinema etc.
