2. What is matter?
Anything that has mass and occupies
space and has mass.

3. What is matter?
• Matter is anything that takes up space.
– Plants, buildings, planets, animals and people
too. Even air is made up of matter.
– We can’t see air, how can we prove air is
made of matter?
• Can you think of something made of
matter?

4. Matter has MASS and VOLUME
• Mass is the amount of
matter that is in an object.
• Volume is the amount of
space that an object takes
up.

5. Physical Property -
A trait of matter that can be
observed or measured
without changing the
chemical composition of the
matter.
No chemical reactions allowed!

absorbs and reflects light

substance looks and feels.

A measure of
the average
kinetic
energy
(energy of
motion) of
particles in a
substance.

 Particles of solids are tightly packed,
vibrating about a fixed position.
 Solids have a definite shape and a
definite volume.

one another.

a definite volume.

 Liquids flow easily because the particles

 Gases have an indefinite shape and
