Lymph is formed from tissue fluid and is a modified tissue fluid that flows more slowly than blood. Lymph contains lower levels of proteins and carbohydrates compared to blood but higher levels of lipids, giving it a milky color. Lymph contains lymphocytes, monocytes, sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride, sulfate, phosphate, and water. When infections or inflammation occur, the corresponding lymph nodes draining that area will enlarge, providing clues to physicians about the location of infections.
