A microscopic world
Round about 1700, a Dutchman, Anton Van Leeuwenhoek, examined a drop of
water through a microscope. He discovered a new world, full of tiny creatures. He
was the first man to describe them:
“ I could clearly see masses of tiny, moving worms. The water seemed to be alive with them. It
was the most wonderful thing I had ever seen in nature: thousands of tiny creatures moving
about, living together in a drop of water. It was a marvellous sight,”
                                                                  ANTON VAN LEEUWENHOEK
Letter to the Royal Society of London
In this unit, we will…

-Learn what cells are and what they are like.

-Learn what unicellular and multicellular living things are.

-Discover the levels of organisation of multicelullar living things.

-Learn the name of the five kingdoms of living things.
LIVING THINGS:

1.Living and non-living things

There are three basic life processes:

          - Nutrition: living thins eat food, which contains nutrients. These nutrients
                      provide energy.

          - Sensitivity: Living things react to their environment.

          - Reproduction: Living things have offsprings. New living things replace the
                         ones which die.
All the living things are made up of tiny units called cells.

                                     microscope

Cells have three main parts: Membrane: is the covering around the cell.

Nucleus: is the part which controls the cell.

Cytoplasm: is between the nucleus and the

Plant cells also have a hard wall around the
                                                membrane.
                                                They have special organelles called
                                                chloroplasts to carry out photosynthesis.

              Animal cell Plant cell
All the living things are made up of cells.

Animals and plants are Other living things are made up
formed by a large number of of a single cell. This living things
cells which are organised are found everywhere: in water,
according to their functions. in soil, in the air and in ur bodies.
However, you can only see them
                                                  through a microscope.

   Multicellular: Unicellular:
Living things made up of Living things made up of
       many cells. a single cell.
Tissues are made up of cells
                                      which work together.

  Organs are made up
  of tissues which work
                                                        Muscle tissue
  together.

Heart Systems are made up of
                                       organs which work
                                       together.
An organism is a complete living
thing. Many systems work
together in an organism. All
living things are organism. All the
systems in an organism work
together to keep a living thing
                                                        Digestive system
healthy.
Put the words in order from the simplest structure to the most complex estructure:

           TISSUE ORGANISM CELL ORGAN SYSTEM
Living things are classified into groups called kingdoms.

THE ANIMAL KINGDOM
-Animals are multicellular
-They eat other living things
-They can move from one place to another
-They have a nervous system and sense organs
-They react to stimuli.

THE PLANT KINGDOM
-Plants are multicellular
-They use sunlight and substances from de soil to make their food
-They cannot move
-They don t have nervous system or sense organs. However, they react slowly to some
stimuli.

THE FUNGI KINGDOM
-Most fungi are multicellular. A few are unicellular
-They depend on other organism for food.
-They can t move.
THE BACTERIA KINGDOM
-Bacteria are the most abundant of all living things.
-They can be found everywhere in the world.
-They are the smallest living things. They are called
 microorganisms or microbes.
 -They are unicelullar.
-Some of them are helpful, like the ones we use to
 make yogurt, cheese or bread.
-Some are harmful, they can cause diseases.

THE FIFTH KINGDOM
-This kingdom is made up of all the living things that
aren t included in the other kingdoms.
-They can be unicellular or multicellular.
-Protozoa are unicellular microbes that feed on other
  living things.

THINK ABOUT -Why does the text say that Leeuwenhoek discovered a new world? -What is a microscope? -Did Leeuwenhoek really see worms in the water? -Was he impressed to see a drop of water under the microscope? A microscopic world Round about 1700, a Dutchman, Anton Van Leeuwenhoek, examined a drop of water through a microscope. He discovered a new world, full of tiny creatures. He was the first man to describe them: “ I could clearly see masses of tiny, moving worms. The water seemed to be alive with them. It was the most wonderful thing I had ever seen in nature: thousands of tiny creatures moving about, living together in a drop of water. It was a marvellous sight,” ANTON VAN LEEUWENHOEK Letter to the Royal Society of London

  • 9. There are three basic life processes: - Nutrition: living thins eat food, which contains nutrients. These nutrients provide energy. - Sensitivity: Living things react to their environment. - Reproduction: Living things have offsprings. New living things replace the ones which die.

Cells are living things, they carry out the life processes of nutrition, reproduction and sensitivity.
  • 13. Cells have three main parts: Membrane: is the covering around the cell. Nucleus: is the part which controls the cell. Cytoplasm: is between the nucleus and the membrane. ANIMAL AND PLANTS CELLS Plant cells also have a hard wall around the membrane. They have special organelles called chloroplasts to carry out photosynthesis.

THE ANIMAL KINGDOM -Animals are multicellular -They eat other living things -They can move from one place to another -They have a nervous system and sense organs -They react to stimuli. THE PLANT KINGDOM -Plants are multicellular -They use sunlight and substances from de soil to make their food -They cannot move -They don t have nervous system or sense organs. However, they react slowly to some stimuli. THE FUNGI KINGDOM -Most fungi are multicellular. A few are unicellular -They depend on other organism for food. -They can t move.
  • 23. THE BACTERIA KINGDOM -Bacteria are the most abundant of all living things. -They can be found everywhere in the world. -They are the smallest living things. They are called microorganisms or microbes. -They are unicelullar. -Some of them are helpful, like the ones we use to make yogurt, cheese or bread. -Some are harmful, they can cause diseases. THE FIFTH KINGDOM -This kingdom is made up of all the living things that aren t included in the other kingdoms. -They can be unicellular or multicellular. -Protozoa are unicellular microbes that feed on other living things.
