This document provides an overview of Legg Calve Perthes disease, which affects the hip in young children ages 4-8. It causes fragmentation of the femoral head epiphysis. The exact cause is unknown but is thought to involve compromised blood supply to the area. It progresses through four radiographic stages from initial changes to healing. Presentation is often a limp and pain in the groin or thigh. Treatment involves bracing the hip to contain it during healing if caught early, or surgery like osteotomies if collapse has occurred. Long term effects can include deformities and arthritis of the hip.
