The Cation Exchange Gel Samples
The cation exchange gel samples are labelled IEX 19 22 as these were the tubes with the highest
activity as shown in the above table. The other IEX fractions had significantly lower specific activities
so were less likely to contain the protein of interest and more likely to contain unwanted proteins than
the higher specific activity fractions. Only the higher specific activity fractions were chosen for this
reason. All the fractions that were analysed by gel electrophoresis have the same banding patterns
which means that they can be combined to get a combined total for the yield calculations. This has
then been used to calculate the amount that there would have been if the entire solution was used for
this process. However, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is seen in the gel electrophoresis where there is a greater number of bands for dye 9 11 than there
is for the IEX tubes. The fold purification was expected to be between 3 7 fold as found on the
BRENDA web page (2017), for this experiment a 1.4 fold (492404/349710) increase in activity was
seen after dye ligand chromatography. The retrospective yield was like cation exchange which also
gave an impossible result considering the after dialysis yield. It is difficult to say which yield is more
accurate. The after dialysis yield measured may be lower than its true value or the error created by
averaging the different tubes and treating them as if the entire sample has overestimated the amount of
LDH present. Although there are more bands on the gel there is a lower retrospective total protein for
dye ligand than there is for cation exchange 43.2 mg and 55.9 mg respectively. This could indicate that
although there is a greater number of bands the ratio of LDH to unwanted proteins may be higher. This
technique has gotten rid of the band that was present in cation exchange but has different bands
present which shows that the two purification techniques are targeting LDH in different ways.
Affinity chromatography relies on the protein ability to bind to specific molecules tightly but not
covalently. This technique uses a ligand bound to the matrix that is capable of specifically binding to
the protein. When the impure solution is passed through the

The Violence Of Black Men And Women
Yes all lives matter, however, a pattern of black men and women have been murdered by police
brutality; therefore, we need to concentrate on preserving Black at this moment. At this very moment,
in the United States, there have been destructive riots and peaceful protest from all races but mostly
African Americans because we continue to witness our black men and women die from police
brutality without justice being served. It is significant that whoever wins the presidential Election will
take steps in assuring that all people especially black people are protected by the police and not
murdered by them. It is important that this president take steps in assuring that the justice system will
began to be just in cases such as the Treyvon Martin, Eric Garner and Sarah Bland. It is important the
president ensures that officers are properly trained when it comes to dealing with those who are
unarmed for the simple fact that there are other methods to arresting a person that is unarmed without
killing them. It is prominent that the President search for other solutions that will decrease the amount
of police brutality that is inflicted on African Americans on a day to day basis. Because quite frankly,
we are disgusted and angry, and tired of seeing youth die for ridiculous reasons.
To begin with, there s the case of Treyvon Martin a seventeen year old high school student who
resided in Florida. In 2012, Martin was visiting his father s house while walking to his father s house,

Epicurus Vs Aristotle
What s the one thing everyone wants to achieve in life and is the ultimate end for every action people
do? Philosophers from almost every generation are trying to figure out what that is, some even
referring to it as the good . But what is the good ? Epicurus would argue that the good is simply
pleasure, honor, and glory; however, that is not the ultimate end for every action people do. According
to Aristotle, the ultimate end that every action seeks is happiness and that s the good everyone desires.
The idea of happiness being the ultimate end, is superior to Epicurus s idea of pleasure, honor, and
glory, due to the fact that all those things are intended to bring forth some form of happiness.
Therefore, happiness must be what everyone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

becoming happy. All these ideas when combined create a complete understanding of happiness and
express the important role happiness has in making a life worth living. Not only that, but the journey
toward happiness through the virtues and an active soul help to develop peoples character making
them a better person overall. Happiness after all is the good that philosophers have been trying to
discover and it becomes more evident after studying happiness in more depth. As has been noted,
happiness is the end for every action people do, whether it be though pleasure or virtue, in the end the
main thing all people desire is

Anne Frank Childhood
Anne Frank was a normal girl in a not so normal time period. She was born in a time of war and
unjust, prejudice and racist thoughts. In a world of hate, she was able to keep her good spirit and faith
in humanity until the end.
Born June 12, 1929 in Frankfurt, Germany, Annelise Marie Frank was the youngest in a family of
four. A mother (Edith), a father (Otto) and a sister, (Margot) Anne seemed to have a pretty good life.
She was a citizen of Germany until 1941 when the Nuremberg laws took effect. Her family moved to
Amsterdam in the early 1930 s when Nazis gained control over Germany. When Anne turned 13, on
June 12, 1942, she was given an autograph book. She decided to use it as a diary. In July of that year,
Margot was called to a work camp. The family decided they would go into hiding. July 6, 1942. The
Frank family puts on as many layers as they can, as no Jew would be caught dead with a suitcase.
Anne had Some of the items Anne packed were; her special diary called Kitty , curlers, hankies,
school books and letters from friends and family members. The only clothes Anne was allowed to take
with were: 2 vests, 3 pair pants, two pair of stockings, dress skirt, jacket, shorts, lace up shoes, wool

Third Estate Recommendations
By analyzing source two, the recommendations to the king made by the third, second, and first estates
general can be interpreted. These recommendations to the king were before the formation of the tennis
court oath of June 20th, 1789. Furthermore, source two allows us to explore the differing priorities
discussed by the cahiers of the three estates general had not been called for many years prior, this
meeting was called forward by the king to satisfy the third estate, and per sway the third estate to

Nonetheless, throughout source two there is no given opinion or ideological perspective. This
nonexistent view allows for a greater focus on the source and the issue it is presenting without a bias
view. Through this unbiased source we can see the three estates and their political, social, and
economic perspectives. One example of a political perspective from the first estate would be only
voting on matters that concern that order, while the second estates political perspective would be more
towards laws that should be made by both the king and the estates general, unlike the third estates
political perspective of court judges being chosen from all orders. Whereas, the estates social
perspective can vary as the first estate is catered towards the church being the most important over all
others, as the second estates perspective is that instead of the church being one of the most important
estate figures the people with wealth and status are, unlike the third estates social perspective that is
based on everyone being equal and no one having a higher worth then

(Shelley 1).This question comes from Walton s first letter to his sister in England. It is also a brief
summary of 19th century world.19th century has been a climax in terms of love of science since The
Renaissance when people discovered themselves and became a light. In order to reflect this
enlightenment into the society, literature has always been an instrument.Social structure is

Imperialism In A Small Place
The initial injustices inflicted upon the people of the Caribbean during the time of colonization did not
end with independence or emancipation, but still remain a prevalent part of Caribbean society. The
absolute political and economic control exercised by the colonizers created an inherently negative
platform on which the modern political and economic systems of the Caribbean now stand. The
corruption of the Antiguan government is introduced by Jamaica Kincaid in her novel, A Small Place.
Throughout the novel, Kincaid takes issue with the numerous instances in which Antiguans are still
treated as second rate citizens within their own land due to political and economic corruption. It is
clear that the skeletons of these organizations remain from the time of British colonization. From
perceptions of beauty to the structure of the government, British influences are seen all throughout
Antigua. Kincaid describes the beautiful yellow of the buildings that she enjoys so much in
comparison to the starch white of the Government Housing (10). ... Show more content on

Kincaid s example of Japanese car companies, therefore these are the companies used by the
government. These vehicles and other products are imported by the Antiguan government simply
because government ministers have a vested interest in them (Kincaid 58). The luxurious cars of these
officials, paid for by the government, are symbols of the corruption. While libraries sit in shambles,
these ministers ride in luxury getting paid by their government salaries and getting a return from the

Court Tennis Research Paper
As tennis players we all strive to have the very best strokes and hit the ball as hard and as accurately
as possible EVERY single time. However, this strategy is not always the best and most intelligent one
to employ. Tennis is a very unique sport that takes a lot of physical and mental strength, along with
unyielding strategical discipline. In order to be a successful player you must resist the temptation of
trying to rip every single ball past or through your opponent on the majority of your shots. There are
less than 1% of players who can do this and still win the majority of their matches. In other words, the
selection of different shots and playing styles are all like a different type of poison, each with an
accompanying antidote. There are no shots in tennis that do not have an antidote. After playing tennis
for even a short period of time you will begin to notice that there are not a whole lot of people who

for developing a reliable stroke. In my opinion, players with the most shot variety will win more
matches than a person who is very good at hitting one type of shot. I highly encourage experimenting
with newly learned shots, as there is no other way to develop shot reliability. While doing this you
must think of performance based results as opposed to outcome based results. If you are too focused
on the outcome of your shots during a match you are putting yourself under a lot of unnecessary

A Look At Cheap Amusements Essay
An extremely interesting, but ever contradictory sociological study of sexual relationsis presented in
the Kathy Peiss book Cheap Amusements . The reason I say that it is ever contradictory is that the
arguments are presented for both the benefit of cheap amusements for a woman s place in society and
for the reinforcement of her place. In one breath, Peiss says that mixed sex fun could be a source of
autonomy and pleasure as well as a cause of [a woman s] continuing oppression. The following
arguments will show that, based on the events and circumstances described in Cheap Amusements ,
the changes in the ways that leisure time is spent by women has indeed benefited them in both the
workplace and at home. This position requires a closer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We must ask this question so that we can later determine if women took initiative in establishing their
need for relaxing activities. If it is the case that women took initiative in this area, we can safely
conclude that women benefited tremendously from the changes in gender roles as a result, because
they would have subverted the so called hollow freedoms mentioned earlier. If the opposite is true,
then it may appear as though women have benefitted, but it could still be argued that the male culture
controlled these changes in the way the leisure market came about.
One of the more interesting aspects that Peiss mentions about the change in the demographics of the
labor force directly relates to the way leisure time is spent. Peiss mentions many statistics that show
how the working woman was quickly refusing household work and moving to the factory or office
position. More specifically, a study of 370 working mothers showed 70 percent of them to be
employed in domestic and personal service while the vast majority of their daughters worked in stores,
offices, and factories (Cheap Amusements, 39). The significance of this change lies in the resulting
change in attitude about leisure time. Now, a clearer distinction between time spent at work and
personal time could be made. Prior to this shift in the workplace, domestic workers would catch small
breaks

Trash Compactor Essay
Initially when plastic was discovered, it gave people a sense of hope to accomplish things that were
once thought of impossible. Additionally, new companies, factories and idea s emerged as a result of
the discovery of plastic and its flexibility in manipulating the chemical structure. For example,
Industries in 1960 adapted to supply produce with plastics from plastics bags to plastic bottles because
it saved them lots money from collecting raw materials from all over the world and it gave them the
advantage to control the production. It was then thought of as a boon to our economy because people
were able to divert from purchasing expensive materials to cheaper ones; however; people did not
expect the plastics material to cause harmful effects on our environment. Furthermore, since the

Learning About Environmental Geometry: An Associative Model
Noam Y. Miller and Sara J. Shettleworth
University of Toronto
K. Cheng (1986) suggested that learning the geometry of enclosing surfaces takes place in a geometric
module blind to other spatial information. Failures to find blocking or overshadowing of geometry
learning by features near a goal seem consistent with this view. The authors present an operant model
in which learning spatial features competes with geometry learning, as in the Rescorla Wagner model.

The signature phenomena of cue competition in conditioning are overshadowing and blocking. In
overshadowing (Pavlov, 1927), when two cues are redundant predictors of the same outcome, less is
learned about either than when it is the sole predictor of the outcome. In blocking (Kamin, 1969),
training with a single cue reduces (blocks) learning about a second, redundant cue added later. Several
studies have looked for blocking or overshadowing of geometric information by features (for a review,
see Cheng Newcombe, 2005). Most studies have concluded that a predictive feature near a goal does
not block learning about the shape of an enclosure (e.g., Hayward, Good, Pearce, 2004; Pearce et al.,
2001; Wall et al., 2004). Moreover, in contrast with the expected competition between cues, geometry
is sometimes learned better in the presence than in the absence of informative features. Pearce et al.
(2001), for example, found that a beacon improved learning about the geometry of a triangular water
tank. Other researchers have come across hints of this same phenomenon (e.g., Hayward et al., 2004;
Hayward, McGregor, Good, Pearce, 2003). Using a geometrically unambiguous kite shaped water
tank, Graham, Good, McGregor, and Pearce (2006) demonstrated in rats substantial potentiation of
geometry learning by a feature. Kelly and Spetch (2004a, 2004b) also found clear evidence of
potentiation of geometry learning by a feature in an operant task in which people and pigeons were

Mohandas Mahatma Gandhi
Mohandas Mahatma Gandhi
(1809 1849)
Biography
Mohandas K. Gandhi was born in 1869, in Porbandar, India. His mother was illiterate, but her
common sense and religious devotion had a lasting impact on Gandhi s character. As a youngster,
Mohandas was a good student, but he never displayed any signs of leadership. On the death of his
father, Mohandas travelled to England to gain a degree in law. He became involved with the
Vegetarian Society and was once asked to translate the Hindu Bhagavad Gita. This classic of Hindu
literature awakened in Gandhi a sense of pride in the Indian scriptures.
Around this time, he also studied the Bible and was struck by the teachings of Jesus Christ especially
the emphasis on humility and forgiveness. He remained committed to the Bible and Bhagavad Gita
throughout his life, though he was critical of aspects of both religions.
Gandhi in South Africa
On completing his degree in Law, Gandhi returned to India, where he was soon sent to South Africa to
practise law. In South Africa, Gandhi was struck by the level of racial discrimination and injustice
often experienced by Indians. It was in South Africa that Gandhi first experimented with campaigns of
civil disobedience and protest; he called his non violent protests satyagraha. Despite being imprisoned
for short periods of time, he also supported the British under certain conditions. He was decorated by
the British for his efforts during the Boer war and Zulu rebellion.

The Case of Kelo v. City of New London
Eminent Dominant According to the facts, it seems that the sentiment of John (Cougar) Mellencamp s
hit in the 1984 fueled the controversies basing on the court s decision on June 23, 2005. The ruling
stated that the local government or federal government was entitled to exercise eminent dominant
rules to enable them acquire private property and utilize it for purposes of economic development.
Eminent domain also referred to as condemnation, is the act of taking private property and making it
public property by the local governing authority, state, or federal government (Bradley 65). The
private property taken away is converted to public property for public use. With reference to the case
of the Kelo v. city of New London, the court ruled that the government should take private property
through eminent domain for public use. This is due to the provisions of Fifth Amendment of the U.S
constitution. New London, Connecticut, could exercise eminent domain for economic development.
New London, Connecticut, was experiencing hard economic times majorly due to the closure of the
U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center, which was the major employer in the region. This prompted a
decrease in the tax base and population in general. This made the city leaders desperate for some
development in the city s economy. Afterwards, a pharmaceutical giant Pfizer started to construct a
facility used for research in the outskirts of New London. This was the only chance for the city to

The Fat Girl Analysis
In every culture, there are certain societal standards that people are expected to live up to. Some have
find it easy to accept and fit in, while other struggle to find themselves within society s ideals. Society
places a great emphasis on the way women should look to be considered beautiful and many women
fail to live up to those standards. In the short story The Fat Girl by Andre Dubus, the reader sees how
the main character Louise, a fat girl, struggles to fit in with pressure society places on her that to be
considered beautiful, one must be thin. Louise, for the majority of her life, outwardly appears as if she
s trying to conform to society s standards of dieting and trying to be thin, but when completely alone,
she hides her guilty pleasure of binge eating candy bars. The pressure is placed upon her from her
childhood and follows her throughout her life, until her marriage falls apart after she gains weight.
Andre Dubus shows us, through the events that occur in Louise s life, that only after accepting
ourselves they way we are, despite societal pressures of conforming to a certain standard, can we
begin the road to becoming happy. She wants to be accepted for who she is, not for what she looks
like. It isn t until her marriage dissolves that she acknowledges that she needs to accept herself and be
comfortable in her own skin before she can become happy. From a young age, Louise is made aware
of the pressure society places on women to be thin. When she is nine years old, her mother starts
pointing out how Louise needs to start watching what she s eating, and places her on a diet. Her
mother tells her, In five years you ll be in high school and if you re fat the boys won t like you; they
won t ask you out (Dubus 125). Her mother tells her that if by the time she enters high school she isn t
thin, she won t have any chance of being in a relationship or being looked at as beautiful. Louise, and
many other girls who are in a similar situation, are trained at a young age to believe that beauty is
equated with being thin. This makes Louise start out life thinking that she ll never be good enough;
she ll never be accepted by others until she becomes the ideal skinny girl. As a nine year old, she

Why babyhood rather than childhood?
The case that I want to make is that babyhood is much more important to our lives than many people

obesity, depression and poor school performance, has already been shaped by children s experiences
in babyhood. For those of you who have not studied the scientific literature, this might seem a bit ...

Role Of The British Empire During The Industrial Revolution
Introduction The people of Great Britain are very proud of the nations history when it comes to
engineering and innovation. The role the British Empire played in the industrial revolution??, the
development of the steam engine?? and rail transport?? were the first few steps that changed the face
of the world (for better or worth) that we live in now. This idea fills people s hearts with pride. But
where this idea is still alive in some parts of the country, there are areas where this attitude is no
longer to be found. The birthplace of the railway has seemed to have fallen behind the rest of the
world. High speed trains that are outdated before they are even built and portion of the public resisting

The Consequences Of Police Discretion In The Police
Police are what is known as street level bureaucrats. This basically means that police are civil servants
working on the street level in direct contact with the general public enforcing the laws of the local,
state and federal law. Police officers work alone or with a partner patrolling the streets within their
beat, therefor they are given a lot of discretion with their title. Discretionary judgment is necessary for
a well functioning police department, but it must be demonstrated properly in order to have positive
outcomes. A police officers ability to use discretion properly can help build the relationship between
law enforcement and the community, but if officers abuse their discretionary judgment then it can lead
to decisional influences / biases (Dempsey pg. 144, 2018). A few solutions have been implemented in
order to counteract / remove these discretionary negatives. Police officers have always possessed the
powers to exercise discretionary judgment ever since they have had the ability to enforce the law.
Discretion within the police force is defined as the officers freedom to make a choice based on the
situation (Young, 2011). However, it has come to light in recent decades that many officers abuse their
powers of discretion, especially with their use of force. This is especially a problem today because
police officers are being monitored every second as departments start incorporating dash cameras and
body cameras. With new video surveillance brings forward the question of whether or not police are
given too much freedom when it comes to discretionary judgment. One of the biggest reasons police
are permitted to demonstrate discretionary judgment is because when it is applied correctly it builds a
positive relationship between law enforcement and the community. The idea is that if officers are too
strict on the law then there would be too many arrest and it wouldn t always allow the officer to act in

no two situations are the exact same therefor officers must apply discretion as needed to the situation
they are experiencing. The debate over police discretion typically comes up after

Cahokia Before Columbus
Forsberg, Sybil Honors History 2B Mr. Miraya 27 August 2016 America Before Columbus Cahokia
existed long before Columbus came to America, but few Americans have learned about this ancient
city. Cahokia s problem is that American history, in the minds of many, started just 500 years ago,
back when Columbus discovered the New World (Lord and Burke 1). Similar to the majority of
Americans, I was not aware that America was inhabited before Columbus journey. It was surprising to
learn that so many Natives had populated the continent. The Europeans that came on the second
journey to the New World were misguided on many parts. They were mislead into thinking that the
land they found had never been civilized. They were very wrong more than

Pompey the Great
While it is clear that Pompey the Great was a successful general, how he came to be so is a more
complicated matter. To analyse Pompey s career this essay will first examine his background,
highlighting the advantages and difficulties that arose from being from a fairly new noble family.
Additionally key events in Pompey s career will be explored chronologically, focusing on his most
important military successes as well as his political career. This will attempt to determine how much
his success relied on his personal characteristics or because of his he was able achieve his successes
due to his personal attributes or because of his political relations with noblemen such as Sulla, Caesar
and Cicero.
While Pompey s family was extremely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pompey captured Carbo but hesitated before finally deciding to kill the man who had three times been
censor (Plut.Pom.12). Furthermore his ruthless treatment of Ahenobarnus would give him the
nickname ‘adulescentulus carnifex , meaning ‘teenage butcher . Sulla gave Pompey a chance at
military success, which he took full advantage of, gaining a good reputation from the start of his
career.
Sulla reinforced this reputation for Pompey, giving him the cognomen ‘magnus meaning ‘the Great .
By this time the young Pompey was wildly popular in Rome and asked for a triumph in 81BC. Sulla
told Pompey he did not qualify, as he had not even held office in Rome. Pompey is famed for telling
Sulla that more people worshipped the rising than the setting sun, to which Sulla was surprised at his
boldness. Sulla eventually allowed him a triumph. Pompey s career was able to advance prematurely
and this triumph allowed him to increase his image as a young conqueror, much like Alexander the
Great. Finally Sulla was able to help Pompey be enabling him to become very wealthy. During Sulla s
dictatorship, both Pompey and Crassus were able to buy large amounts of land as it had been
confiscated off those on Sulla s proscription.
As Sulla retired and took himself out of public life, Pompey s most important political relationship
was that which he had with Caesar. In 67BC Rome had problems with pirates who were affecting the

The Case Of Same Sex Love
If adjustment is necessary, it should be made primarily with regard to the position the homosexual
occupies in present day society, and society should more often be the patient to be treated than the
homosexual. Dr. Harry Benjamin Same sex love has existed in Indian society and culture. Hindu
festivals and sex which celebrate homosexual acts, the description of sodomy Kama sutra, the court
customs of Babar, references to women loving women in the Mahabharata and Ramayana and
description of Tantric initiation rites which evoked the idea of universal bisexuality in human
personality are discussed widely. The 2nd of July, 2009 shall be remembered as the one on which
Indian homosexuals got a new lease of life; freedom from the clutches of the archaic and
discriminatory Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 (hereinafter IPC). This finally enables
them to lead a life of dignity which shall be free from harassment, oppression and victimization. The
decade long struggle, by the activists and the homosexuals, to abolish the monstrous law has met with
success. The Delhi High Court declared the concerned penal provision as unconstitutional insofar it
criminalizes consensual sexual acts of adults in private since it violates the fundamental rights granted
under Articles 213, 144 and 155 of the Constitution of India. Though the matter is still pending before
the Supreme Court of India, on the one hand the decision has brought much awaited relief to the
advocates of

The Human Of Bone Marrow Transplantation
It should be noted that marrow grafting could not have reached clinical application without animal
research, first in inbred rodents and then in outbred species E. Donnall Thomas, The Nobel Prizes,
1990 Animal research, as mentioned by Dr. E. Donnall Thomas in 1990 during his Nobel Prize award,
has been crucial for the understanding of bone marrow transplantation (BMT) as a clinical therapy
138. His studies extensively used both mice and dogs as animal models. Other important models used
in BMT research are rats, cats, pigs and non human primates. The mouse is an excellent animal model
because of the similarities in physiological and pathological traits that they share with other animals
and humans. The field of BMT research has taken full advantage of these qualities, and mice have
become one of the most commonly used BMT animal models. Transplantation (organ and
hematopoietic) began in the early 20th century1. Several studies published between 1949 1953 139
141 documented that organs removed and immediately transplanted back into the same individual
(autotransplants) were not rejected. However, organs from genetically different animals but from the
same species (allografts) would eventually fail several days after transplantation. After the
identification of the antigens that comprise the major histocompatibility complexes (MHC) in the
1960 s, transplantation between genetically different individuals became feasible 1. In the veterinary
medical field, it was

The Jataka Tale Of The Hungry Tigress
The Jataka tales are an integral part of Buddhist literature as they illustrate the great deeds, in past
lives of the being that was to become the Buddha Gautama. (Harvey 99)In such tales, the Bodhisattva
character ...does some inspiring deed of generosity, kindness or wisdom... identified with the Buddha
or his key disciples... (99) In the story of the Hungry Tigress, a human, brahmin Bodhisattva stumbles
across a starving tigress with her cubs while out meditating in nearby caves. Shocked and saddened
upon seeing the dying creature; attempting to eat her own kin, the Bodhisattva deliberates how he can
save this beautiful creature. He decides in a moment of passion and emptiness to hurl himself off the
mountainside to where the tigress is so she can be saved by eating his body. His disciples become
aware of this awe inspiring act and are moved by the loving and kindness of this Bodhisattva.
Interestingly, when analyzing the Jataka tale of the Hungry Tigress, one can point to parallels between
the Bodhisattva protagonist to the practice and teachings of the Arahat of the Theravada school, the
Bodhisattva of the Mahayana school and the follower of the quicker path to Buddhahood of the
Vajrayana school. However, the self sacrificial actions of the bodhisattva at the end of the tale is
analogous to the Guru of the school of Vajrayana, leading one to believe that this story best follows
the thunderbolt vehicle of Vajrayana.
In the school of Theravada Buddhism, one strives to

Essay on Comparing Those Winter Sundays to My Papa s Waltz
Battered Memories: Child and Father Relationships In Those Winter Sundays and My Papa s Waltz
Sundays too my father got up early and / And put his clothes on in the blueback cold comes from
Robert Hayden s Those Winter Sundays and describes the life of the speaker who reminisces of the
childhood experiences that were spent with the speaker s father (1 2). At every step you missed / My
right ear scraped a buckle comes from Theodore Roethke s My Papa s Waltz and also exemplifies a
past relationship between a child and father (11 2). Despite the many similarities that exist between

The usage of these words through comparisons and other poetic devices also allows readers to get
better understandings of the relationship between the speaker and the speaker s father. Roethke s usage
of poetic devices place emphasis on the conditions in which the speaker experiences as a young child.
Although the whiskey on the father of the speaker s breath is very strong, the speaker continuously . .
.hung on like death (3) and candidly states that Such waltzing was not easy (4). The usage of simile by
comparing the speaker s clinging of his father s shirt to death places emphasis on the feelings and
emotions that are present in the household. Knowing that his . . . mother s countenance could not
unfrown itself is an example of imagery that further adds to the turmoil and negative events that exist
in the speaker s home by allowing readers to visualize the facial expressions that are present (7 8). Not
only do the poetic devices contribute to the meaning of the poem, but it also contributes to the tone as
well. The tone in Those Winter Sundays is also reflective, yet it establishes a sense of guilt and
remorse. The speaker questions inwardly by wondering What [he] kn[e]w / . . . of love s austere and
lonely offices as a young child, which creates a sense of guilt and conveys

College Essay On Peer Pressure
Eyeballing the Gatorade bottle as it became full of smoke, I knew I had caved into peer pressure. Peer
pressure can be a big obstacle for lots of teens. Although peer pressure can sometimes be a positive, it
is often harmful and damaging. That type of negative influence from one s peers can lead them to try
things they usually would have no interest in trying. When I was about to turn thirteen, I learned just
how true my previous statement was. All it took for me to experience peer pressure for the first time
was a couple of grams of marijuana.
When I was younger, I would spend most of my summer nights playing video games with my friends.
Most nights, you would find me with one friend in particular, and that friend was (at the time) sixteen
year old Kevin Gomez. I would walk to Kevin s house since he lived a couple of minutes away from
me. This night however, Kevin and I agreed to meet at his aunt s house due to her being on vacation.
Sitting on his aunt s beige couches that had been wrapped in plastic, we had begun the night the exact
way we had begun any other night, by playing video games. We were roughly an hour into our gaming
session, when from the corner of my eye I spotted Kevin reaching for something from inside his right
pocket. He pulled out what appeared to be a tiny plastic bag. The moment he opened the bag I knew
exactly what he had brought with him. Instantly the smell of skunk had filled my nostrils.
You tryna smoke? Kevin said as he set his PlayStation

Budget Cuts In Public Schools
Are teachers satisfied with their salary? Do we lose opportunities in hiring new people to educate our
students because of district cuts? District Budget cuts are ruining our future and causing many
problems for the younger generations. Thanks to budget cuts many of the students today rely on auto
correct for their spelling, many depend on calculators and other tools to keep up with curve because
there wasn t competent teachers there to help them and due to budget cuts we have serious problems
to look forward to in our future. People do not want to work at places that pay so low amount of
money. Finding the right people to apply to schools in Philadelphia is really hard. At the same time,
the percentage of teachers who said they were likely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With all those students in there you would think there would be at least one teacher per class. This is
the reason many kids are doing dangerous activities such as stealing and joining gangs because there s
no teacher to keep them occupied otherwise. they find any reason they can do to keep themselves
busy. Is this the direction our nation is going towards, a nation full of ignorance and violence? The sad
truth is that in many parts yes, it has been taken over by savagery. There are not enough teachers who
are both qualified and willing to teach. (Heather Voke)
What s the point of going to class, I don t have a teacher anyways? Students have been walking
around saying this and it upsets me. How can you be so ready to start a new fresh year with a clean
slate but come to school and end up not having a teacher. That is a huge waste of the students time and
a waste of education they should be getting.teachers are parents and have kids of their own. we can t
blame anyone for not becoming a teacher at such schools. they need to support themselves and even
family. if so much work is being given by teachers they expect to be rewarded something nice in

Subjugation of Freedom in One Flew over the Cuckoo s Nest
The Subjugation of Freedom in One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest Ken Kesey s book, One Flew Over
the Cuckoo s Nest, is a multi faceted work incorporating many thematic elements. One of the most
easily addressable themes is that of freedom and its limitations placed upon the characters in the
novel. Many types of freedoms are addressed ranging from the tangible and real to the perceived and
implied. The setting primarily takes place in a mental hospital on a locked ward which limits the
characters physical freedoms. The characters are constantly coerced and demeaned by the antagonist
Ms. Ratched which limits their mental freedoms. Beneath all is a subtext of sexual repression which is
constantly fought against by McMurphy. Individually, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sex is used in the novel as a representation of total freedom. Its exercise is almost always portrayed by
McMurphy who, through his general demeanor and newness to the hospital, is the most free, sexually,
of any of the men. He is so free, that it has gotten him into trouble as he only seems to be able to act
on impulse. Society is not able to deal with his complete abandon and he is eventually punished for it
by having a piece of his brain removed. The rest of the men are all repressed mostly due to some
problem they ve had with the women in their lives. In fact, it is their inability to deal with women that
brought them to the hospital in the first place. Women are portrayed throughout the book as the root of
all men s problems. Nurse Ratched is the penultimate figure of sexual repression. She does not
acknowledge her femininity but hides it successfully, but for her bosom, beneath her sterile, pressed
uniform. She is cold toward the men offering no real compassion and serves only to aggravate the men
s issues with women in general. Her power is finally stripped from her, quite literally, when
McMurphy rips open her uniform revealing her breasts, the symbol of femininity; she is a woman
after all.
Limiting or removing freedom boils down to control. Those who restrict freedoms wish to exercise
control upon those whose freedoms have been infringed. In the story, the restriction of all freedoms is

Analysis Of Barbie Doll By Marge Piercy
Barbie Doll , is a poem written by Marge Piercy in 1936, that clearly delivers strong feminist views
about the pressures and standards that women are forced to live with. The poem is a depressing take,
describing a young girl s life beginning with her birth and ending with her ironic death. The poem
progresses and tells how the pressures of being a woman affect the girl s life and influence her actions.
The poem shows problem in society is inequality between sexes and the answer is feminism it is
equality for all.
This poem opens with a girl s uneventful and normal birth. As a young child, the girl was presented
dolls that did pee pee / and miniature GE stoves and irons / and wee lipsticks the color of cherry
candy. (Chesnutt, 349) this was societies standers encroaching on her life and molding her to be a
socially acceptable woman. The toys were meant to prepare her for the expectations she would have
later in life, expectations that a woman should raise children, take care of the babies, feed the family,
do the laundry, do household chores, and look beautiful while doing it. It is proven in a study that sex
trait stereotypes were found to develop in a linear fashion between the ages of 5 and 11, so when
young girls are given toys to stereotype their futures it really does affect them. (Best, et al.) The first
stanza ends with the girl s puberty years and the realization of society s standards of beauty as she is
told of her great big nose and fat legs . (Chesnutt, 349)

Elwood Reid Analysis
Revision Statement The revision process is never easy to begin, but Professor Delp s comments were
definitely a great starting place. The main suggestions were to make sure that everything was in
present tense, cutting down on wordy passages, and correcting some stiff language. I began by
rereading the introduction, and I quickly realized that most of my sentences were awkward and not
connected. The fact that I had misused a semicolon did not help at all. I decided to rewrite my
introduction, making it more straightforward and connecting the universal idea of people doing bad
things to the specific situation of Elwood Reid better. As I continued reading the rest of my paper, I
realized that much of my wordiness and awkward language was due to the fact that I lacked deeper
analysis. To make up for it, I was repetitive with my ideas and just tried to say them in different places
with different words. I could have focused more on how the imagery demonstrated that Reid was
dehumanized, why he chose to use that imagery at that particular point in the essay, and how it all
connected back to him wanting to belong. To help with this, I added another quotation in my first body
paragraph. This quotation also depicted the violence on the field that Reid wanted to show his readers,
but it also explained why Reid played in the savage way that he did. ... Show more content on

coherent analysis. Those are just some of the things I have learned; this semester I have also learned
different views of looking at the world and using my authentic voice. This revision process is just a

  • 2. The Cation Exchange Gel Samples The cation exchange gel samples are labelled IEX 19 22 as these were the tubes with the highest activity as shown in the above table. The other IEX fractions had significantly lower specific activities so were less likely to contain the protein of interest and more likely to contain unwanted proteins than the higher specific activity fractions. Only the higher specific activity fractions were chosen for this reason. All the fractions that were analysed by gel electrophoresis have the same banding patterns which means that they can be combined to get a combined total for the yield calculations. This has then been used to calculate the amount that there would have been if the entire solution was used for this process. However, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is seen in the gel electrophoresis where there is a greater number of bands for dye 9 11 than there is for the IEX tubes. The fold purification was expected to be between 3 7 fold as found on the BRENDA web page (2017), for this experiment a 1.4 fold (492404/349710) increase in activity was seen after dye ligand chromatography. The retrospective yield was like cation exchange which also gave an impossible result considering the after dialysis yield. It is difficult to say which yield is more accurate. The after dialysis yield measured may be lower than its true value or the error created by averaging the different tubes and treating them as if the entire sample has overestimated the amount of LDH present. Although there are more bands on the gel there is a lower retrospective total protein for dye ligand than there is for cation exchange 43.2 mg and 55.9 mg respectively. This could indicate that although there is a greater number of bands the ratio of LDH to unwanted proteins may be higher. This technique has gotten rid of the band that was present in cation exchange but has different bands present which shows that the two purification techniques are targeting LDH in different ways. Affinity chromatography relies on the protein ability to bind to specific molecules tightly but not covalently. This technique uses a ligand bound to the matrix that is capable of specifically binding to the protein. When the impure solution is passed through the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Violence Of Black Men And Women Yes all lives matter, however, a pattern of black men and women have been murdered by police brutality; therefore, we need to concentrate on preserving Black at this moment. At this very moment, in the United States, there have been destructive riots and peaceful protest from all races but mostly African Americans because we continue to witness our black men and women die from police brutality without justice being served. It is significant that whoever wins the presidential Election will take steps in assuring that all people especially black people are protected by the police and not murdered by them. It is important that this president take steps in assuring that the justice system will began to be just in cases such as the Treyvon Martin, Eric Garner and Sarah Bland. It is important the president ensures that officers are properly trained when it comes to dealing with those who are unarmed for the simple fact that there are other methods to arresting a person that is unarmed without killing them. It is prominent that the President search for other solutions that will decrease the amount of police brutality that is inflicted on African Americans on a day to day basis. Because quite frankly, we are disgusted and angry, and tired of seeing youth die for ridiculous reasons. • 4. Epicurus Vs Aristotle What s the one thing everyone wants to achieve in life and is the ultimate end for every action people do? Philosophers from almost every generation are trying to figure out what that is, some even referring to it as the good . But what is the good ? Epicurus would argue that the good is simply pleasure, honor, and glory; however, that is not the ultimate end for every action people do. According to Aristotle, the ultimate end that every action seeks is happiness and that s the good everyone desires. The idea of happiness being the ultimate end, is superior to Epicurus s idea of pleasure, honor, and glory, due to the fact that all those things are intended to bring forth some form of happiness. Therefore, happiness must be what everyone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Imperialism In A Small Place The initial injustices inflicted upon the people of the Caribbean during the time of colonization did not end with independence or emancipation, but still remain a prevalent part of Caribbean society. The absolute political and economic control exercised by the colonizers created an inherently negative platform on which the modern political and economic systems of the Caribbean now stand. The corruption of the Antiguan government is introduced by Jamaica Kincaid in her novel, A Small Place. Throughout the novel, Kincaid takes issue with the numerous instances in which Antiguans are still treated as second rate citizens within their own land due to political and economic corruption. It is clear that the skeletons of these organizations remain from the time of British colonization. However, this strategy is not always the best and most intelligent one to employ. Tennis is a very unique sport that takes a lot of physical and mental strength, along with unyielding strategical discipline. In order to be a successful player you must resist the temptation of trying to rip every single ball past or through your opponent on the majority of your shots. There are less than 1% of players who can do this and still win the majority of their matches. In other words, the selection of different shots and playing styles are all like a different type of poison, each with an accompanying antidote. The reason I say that it is ever contradictory is that the arguments are presented for both the benefit of cheap amusements for a woman s place in society and for the reinforcement of her place. In one breath, Peiss says that mixed sex fun could be a source of autonomy and pleasure as well as a cause of [a woman s] continuing oppression. We must ask this question so that we can later determine if women took initiative in establishing their need for relaxing activities. If it is the case that women took initiative in this area, we can safely conclude that women benefited tremendously from the changes in gender roles as a result, because they would have subverted the so called hollow freedoms mentioned earlier. If the opposite is true, then it may appear as though women have benefitted, but it could still be argued that the male culture controlled these changes in the way the leisure market came about. One of the more interesting aspects that Peiss mentions about the change in the demographics of the labor force directly relates to the way leisure time is spent. Peiss mentions many statistics that show how the working woman was quickly refusing household work and moving to the factory or office position. More specifically, a study of 370 working mothers showed 70 percent of them to be employed in domestic and personal service while the vast majority of their daughters worked in stores, offices, and factories (Cheap Amusements, 39). The significance of this change lies in the resulting change in attitude about leisure time. Now, a clearer distinction between time spent at work and personal time could be made. The signature phenomena of cue competition in conditioning are overshadowing and blocking. In overshadowing (Pavlov, 1927), when two cues are redundant predictors of the same outcome, less is learned about either than when it is the sole predictor of the outcome. In blocking (Kamin, 1969), training with a single cue reduces (blocks) learning about a second, redundant cue added later. Several studies have looked for blocking or overshadowing of geometric information by features (for a review, see Cheng Newcombe, 2005). Most studies have concluded that a predictive feature near a goal does not block learning about the shape of an enclosure (e.g., Hayward, Good, Pearce, 2004; Pearce et al., 2001; Wall et al., 2004). Moreover, in contrast with the expected competition between cues, geometry is sometimes learned better in the presence than in the absence of informative features. Pearce et al. (2001), for example, found that a beacon improved learning about the geometry of a triangular water tank. Other researchers have come across hints of this same phenomenon (e.g., Hayward et al., 2004; Hayward, McGregor, Good, Pearce, 2003). Using a geometrically unambiguous kite shaped water tank, Graham, Good, McGregor, and Pearce (2006) demonstrated in rats substantial potentiation of geometry learning by a feature. His mother was illiterate, but her common sense and religious devotion had a lasting impact on Gandhi s character. As a youngster, Mohandas was a good student, but he never displayed any signs of leadership. On the death of his father, Mohandas travelled to England to gain a degree in law. He became involved with the Vegetarian Society and was once asked to translate the Hindu Bhagavad Gita. This classic of Hindu literature awakened in Gandhi a sense of pride in the Indian scriptures. Around this time, he also studied the Bible and was struck by the teachings of Jesus Christ especially the emphasis on humility and forgiveness. He remained committed to the Bible and Bhagavad Gita throughout his life, though he was critical of aspects of both religions. Gandhi in South Africa On completing his degree in Law, Gandhi returned to India, where he was soon sent to South Africa to practise law. In South Africa, Gandhi was struck by the level of racial discrimination and injustice often experienced by Indians. It was in South Africa that Gandhi first experimented with campaigns of civil disobedience and protest; he called his non violent protests satyagraha. Despite being imprisoned for short periods of time, he also supported the British under certain conditions. He was decorated by the British for his efforts during the Boer war and Zulu rebellion. City of New London Eminent Dominant According to the facts, it seems that the sentiment of John (Cougar) Mellencamp s hit in the 1984 fueled the controversies basing on the court s decision on June 23, 2005. The ruling stated that the local government or federal government was entitled to exercise eminent dominant rules to enable them acquire private property and utilize it for purposes of economic development. Eminent domain also referred to as condemnation, is the act of taking private property and making it public property by the local governing authority, state, or federal government (Bradley 65). The private property taken away is converted to public property for public use. With reference to the case of the Kelo v. city of New London, the court ruled that the government should take private property through eminent domain for public use. This is due to the provisions of Fifth Amendment of the U.S constitution. New London, Connecticut, could exercise eminent domain for economic development. New London, Connecticut, was experiencing hard economic times majorly due to the closure of the U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center, which was the major employer in the region. • 16. The Fat Girl Analysis In every culture, there are certain societal standards that people are expected to live up to. Some have find it easy to accept and fit in, while other struggle to find themselves within society s ideals. Society places a great emphasis on the way women should look to be considered beautiful and many women fail to live up to those standards. In the short story The Fat Girl by Andre Dubus, the reader sees how the main character Louise, a fat girl, struggles to fit in with pressure society places on her that to be considered beautiful, one must be thin. Louise, for the majority of her life, outwardly appears as if she s trying to conform to society s standards of dieting and trying to be thin, but when completely alone, she hides her guilty pleasure of binge eating candy bars. The pressure is placed upon her from her childhood and follows her throughout her life, until her marriage falls apart after she gains weight. Andre Dubus shows us, through the events that occur in Louise s life, that only after accepting ourselves they way we are, despite societal pressures of conforming to a certain standard, can we begin the road to becoming happy. She wants to be accepted for who she is, not for what she looks like. It isn t until her marriage dissolves that she acknowledges that she needs to accept herself and be comfortable in her own skin before she can become happy. From a young age, Louise is made aware of the pressure society places on women to be thin. When she is nine years old, her mother starts pointing out how Louise needs to start watching what she s eating, and places her on a diet. Her mother tells her, In five years you ll be in high school and if you re fat the boys won t like you; they won t ask you out (Dubus 125). Her mother tells her that if by the time she enters high school she isn t thin, she won t have any chance of being in a relationship or being looked at as beautiful. Louise, and many other girls who are in a similar situation, are trained at a young age to believe that beauty is equated with being thin. This makes Louise start out life thinking that she ll never be good enough; she ll never be accepted by others until she becomes the ideal skinny girl. As a nine year old, she ... • 20. The Consequences Of Police Discretion In The Police Police are what is known as street level bureaucrats. This basically means that police are civil servants working on the street level in direct contact with the general public enforcing the laws of the local, state and federal law. Police officers work alone or with a partner patrolling the streets within their beat, therefor they are given a lot of discretion with their title. Discretionary judgment is necessary for a well functioning police department, but it must be demonstrated properly in order to have positive outcomes. A police officers ability to use discretion properly can help build the relationship between law enforcement and the community, but if officers abuse their discretionary judgment then it can lead to decisional influences / biases (Dempsey pg. 144, 2018). A few solutions have been implemented in order to counteract / remove these discretionary negatives. Police officers have always possessed the powers to exercise discretionary judgment ever since they have had the ability to enforce the law. Discretion within the police force is defined as the officers freedom to make a choice based on the situation (Young, 2011). However, it has come to light in recent decades that many officers abuse their powers of discretion, especially with their use of force. This is especially a problem today because police officers are being monitored every second as departments start incorporating dash cameras and body cameras. With new video surveillance brings forward the question of whether or not police are given too much freedom when it comes to discretionary judgment. One of the biggest reasons police are permitted to demonstrate discretionary judgment is because when it is applied correctly it builds a positive relationship between law enforcement and the community. The idea is that if officers are too strict on the law then there would be too many arrest and it wouldn t always allow the officer to act in a just manner. Discretionary judgment is necessary for law enforcement to function properly because no two situations are the exact same therefor officers must apply discretion as needed to the situation they are experiencing. The debate over police discretion typically comes up after ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Cahokia Before Columbus Forsberg, Sybil Honors History 2B Mr. Miraya 27 August 2016 America Before Columbus Cahokia existed long before Columbus came to America, but few Americans have learned about this ancient city. Cahokia s problem is that American history, in the minds of many, started just 500 years ago, back when Columbus discovered the New World (Lord and Burke 1). Similar to the majority of Americans, I was not aware that America was inhabited before Columbus journey. It was surprising to learn that so many Natives had populated the continent. The Europeans that came on the second journey to the New World were misguided on many parts. They were mislead into thinking that the land they found had never been civilized. Sulla gave Pompey a chance at military success, which he took full advantage of, gaining a good reputation from the start of his career. Sulla reinforced this reputation for Pompey, giving him the cognomen ‘magnus meaning ‘the Great . By this time the young Pompey was wildly popular in Rome and asked for a triumph in 81BC. Sulla told Pompey he did not qualify, as he had not even held office in Rome. Pompey is famed for telling Sulla that more people worshipped the rising than the setting sun, to which Sulla was surprised at his boldness. Sulla eventually allowed him a triumph. Pompey s career was able to advance prematurely and this triumph allowed him to increase his image as a young conqueror, much like Alexander the Great. Finally Sulla was able to help Pompey be enabling him to become very wealthy. The Case Of Same Sex Love If adjustment is necessary, it should be made primarily with regard to the position the homosexual occupies in present day society, and society should more often be the patient to be treated than the homosexual. Dr. Harry Benjamin Same sex love has existed in Indian society and culture. Hindu festivals and sex which celebrate homosexual acts, the description of sodomy Kama sutra, the court customs of Babar, references to women loving women in the Mahabharata and Ramayana and description of Tantric initiation rites which evoked the idea of universal bisexuality in human personality are discussed widely. The 2nd of July, 2009 shall be remembered as the one on which Indian homosexuals got a new lease of life; freedom from the clutches of the archaic and discriminatory Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 (hereinafter IPC). This finally enables them to lead a life of dignity which shall be free from harassment, oppression and victimization. The decade long struggle, by the activists and the homosexuals, to abolish the monstrous law has met with success. The Delhi High Court declared the concerned penal provision as unconstitutional insofar it criminalizes consensual sexual acts of adults in private since it violates the fundamental rights granted under Articles 213, 144 and 155 of the Constitution of India. The Human Of Bone Marrow Transplantation It should be noted that marrow grafting could not have reached clinical application without animal research, first in inbred rodents and then in outbred species E. Donnall Thomas, The Nobel Prizes, 1990 Animal research, as mentioned by Dr. E. Donnall Thomas in 1990 during his Nobel Prize award, has been crucial for the understanding of bone marrow transplantation (BMT) as a clinical therapy 138. His studies extensively used both mice and dogs as animal models. Other important models used in BMT research are rats, cats, pigs and non human primates. The mouse is an excellent animal model because of the similarities in physiological and pathological traits that they share with other animals and humans. The field of BMT research has taken full advantage of these qualities, and mice have become one of the most commonly used BMT animal models. Transplantation (organ and hematopoietic) began in the early 20th century1. Several studies published between 1949 1953 139 141 documented that organs removed and immediately transplanted back into the same individual (autotransplants) were not rejected. However, organs from genetically different animals but from the same species (allografts) would eventually fail several days after transplantation. The Jataka Tale Of The Hungry Tigress The Jataka tales are an integral part of Buddhist literature as they illustrate the great deeds, in past lives of the being that was to become the Buddha Gautama. (Harvey 99)In such tales, the Bodhisattva character ...does some inspiring deed of generosity, kindness or wisdom... identified with the Buddha or his key disciples... (99) In the story of the Hungry Tigress, a human, brahmin Bodhisattva stumbles across a starving tigress with her cubs while out meditating in nearby caves. Shocked and saddened upon seeing the dying creature; attempting to eat her own kin, the Bodhisattva deliberates how he can save this beautiful creature. He decides in a moment of passion and emptiness to hurl himself off the mountainside to where the tigress is so she can be saved by eating his body. His disciples become aware of this awe inspiring act and are moved by the loving and kindness of this Bodhisattva. Interestingly, when analyzing the Jataka tale of the Hungry Tigress, one can point to parallels between the Bodhisattva protagonist to the practice and teachings of the Arahat of the Theravada school, the Bodhisattva of the Mahayana school and the follower of the quicker path to Buddhahood of the Vajrayana school. However, the self sacrificial actions of the bodhisattva at the end of the tale is analogous to the Guru of the school of Vajrayana, leading one to believe that this story best follows the thunderbolt vehicle of Vajrayana. Although peer pressure can sometimes be a positive, it is often harmful and damaging. That type of negative influence from one s peers can lead them to try things they usually would have no interest in trying. When I was about to turn thirteen, I learned just how true my previous statement was. All it took for me to experience peer pressure for the first time was a couple of grams of marijuana. When I was younger, I would spend most of my summer nights playing video games with my friends. Most nights, you would find me with one friend in particular, and that friend was (at the time) sixteen year old Kevin Gomez. I would walk to Kevin s house since he lived a couple of minutes away from me. This night however, Kevin and I agreed to meet at his aunt s house due to her being on vacation. Sitting on his aunt s beige couches that had been wrapped in plastic, we had begun the night the exact way we had begun any other night, by playing video games. We were roughly an hour into our gaming session, when from the corner of my eye I spotted Kevin reaching for something from inside his right pocket. He pulled out what appeared to be a tiny plastic bag. The moment he opened the bag I knew exactly what he had brought with him. Instantly the smell of skunk had filled my nostrils. You tryna smoke? Subjugation of Freedom in One Flew over the Cuckoo s Nest The Subjugation of Freedom in One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest Ken Kesey s book, One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest, is a multi faceted work incorporating many thematic elements. One of the most easily addressable themes is that of freedom and its limitations placed upon the characters in the novel. Many types of freedoms are addressed ranging from the tangible and real to the perceived and implied. The setting primarily takes place in a mental hospital on a locked ward which limits the characters physical freedoms. The characters are constantly coerced and demeaned by the antagonist Ms. Ratched which limits their mental freedoms. Sex is used in the novel as a representation of total freedom. Its exercise is almost always portrayed by McMurphy who, through his general demeanor and newness to the hospital, is the most free, sexually, of any of the men. He is so free, that it has gotten him into trouble as he only seems to be able to act on impulse. Society is not able to deal with his complete abandon and he is eventually punished for it by having a piece of his brain removed. The rest of the men are all repressed mostly due to some problem they ve had with the women in their lives. In fact, it is their inability to deal with women that brought them to the hospital in the first place. Women are portrayed throughout the book as the root of all men s problems. Nurse Ratched is the penultimate figure of sexual repression. She does not acknowledge her femininity but hides it successfully, but for her bosom, beneath her sterile, pressed uniform. She is cold toward the men offering no real compassion and serves only to aggravate the men s issues with women in general. Her power is finally stripped from her, quite literally, when McMurphy rips open her uniform revealing her breasts, the symbol of femininity; she is a woman after all. Limiting or removing freedom boils down to control. Those who restrict freedoms wish to exercise control upon those whose freedoms have been infringed. • 31. Analysis Of Barbie Doll By Marge Piercy Barbie Doll , is a poem written by Marge Piercy in 1936, that clearly delivers strong feminist views about the pressures and standards that women are forced to live with. The poem is a depressing take, describing a young girl s life beginning with her birth and ending with her ironic death. The poem progresses and tells how the pressures of being a woman affect the girl s life and influence her actions. The poem shows problem in society is inequality between sexes and the answer is feminism it is equality for all. This poem opens with a girl s uneventful and normal birth. As a young child, the girl was presented dolls that did pee pee / and miniature GE stoves and irons / and wee lipsticks the color of cherry candy. (Chesnutt, 349) this was societies standers encroaching on her life and molding her to be a socially acceptable woman. The toys were meant to prepare her for the expectations she would have later in life, expectations that a woman should raise children, take care of the babies, feed the family, do the laundry, do household chores, and look beautiful while doing it. It is proven in a study that sex trait stereotypes were found to develop in a linear fashion between the ages of 5 and 11, so when young girls are given toys to stereotype their futures it really does affect them. (Best, et al.) The first stanza ends with the girl s puberty years and the realization of society s standards of beauty as she is told of her great big nose and fat legs . (Chesnutt, 349) ... The main suggestions were to make sure that everything was in present tense, cutting down on wordy passages, and correcting some stiff language. I began by rereading the introduction, and I quickly realized that most of my sentences were awkward and not connected. The fact that I had misused a semicolon did not help at all. I decided to rewrite my introduction, making it more straightforward and connecting the universal idea of people doing bad things to the specific situation of Elwood Reid better. As I continued reading the rest of my paper, I realized that much of my wordiness and awkward language was due to the fact that I lacked deeper analysis. To make up for it, I was repetitive with my ideas and just tried to say them in different places with different words. I could have focused more on how the imagery demonstrated that Reid was dehumanized, why he chose to use that imagery at that particular point in the essay, and how it all connected back to him wanting to belong. To help with this, I added another quotation in my first body paragraph. This quotation also depicted the violence on the field that Reid wanted to show his readers, but it also explained why Reid played in the savage way that he did. ...
