The Hellenistic Homemaker Essay
The Hellenistic Homemaker
In both Xenophon s Oeconomicus and Lysias defense of Euphiletus murder of Eratosthenes, insight
into the purpose and function of Athenian marriage may be gained by examination of the speeches of
two citizens about their wives and their homes. Through both texts, it becomes apparent that the
citizen s value of his wife is based upon his wife s ability as an oikonomikos or skilled household
manager (Strauss, 3). It is through filling this role as her husband s housekeeper that an Athenian
woman experienced a loss of personal freedom and found herself trapped within a marriage in which
she had little contact or much in common with her husband. A woman s role as oikonomikos is
described by Euphiletus address ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rather, when I considered for myself, and your parents for you, whom we might take as the best
partner for the household and children, I chose you, and your parents, as it appears, from among the
possibilities chose me (Xenophon, VII.10 11). Indeed, the girl is looked upon as an employee of the
husband and the oikos. Euphiletus states how ...in the beginning she was the best of women. She was a
clever housewife, economical and exact in her management of everything (Freeman, 44). For
Euphiletus, his wife s worth was based totally on her managerial skills.
Through Euphiletus and Socrates, the five requirements of a good oikonomikos come to be apparent.
The first requirement is that a new wife be young, so that she might be taught by her new husband the
ways to suit himself and his oikos perfectly. Socrates muses, ...it seems to me there are certain ages at
which both horses and human beings are immediately useful as well as susceptible to improvement
(Xenophon, III.10). Next, the young wife must be uneducated so that she might be trained in just the
way the husband wishes, and he will not suffer because of any incorrect training she may have
acquired. Socrates is asked by Ischomachos How, Socrates, he said, could she have known anything
when I took her, since she came to me when she was not yet fifteen,

Postcolonial Literature In Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart
Postcolonial literature was written during the time period when European countries began colonizing
Africa on the premise that the Africans were savages and needed help to become more civilized. The
Europeans believed that they would achieve this by setting up governments similar to their own,
ignoring the ones the African tribes already had set up, and forcefully converting them to Christianity,
much to the Africans dismay. In response, the Africans could not do much to dispel the white people
from their lands, so some wrote postcolonial literature to display their grievances against the whites.
Chinua Achebe s, Things Fall Apart, is a great example. Within this postcolonial literature there are
numerous reasons as to why it is so, like decolonization struggles, appropriation of colonial language,
and colonization. In Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe gives multiple examples of decolonization
struggles, or when the Igbo people fought against the white colonization. An early example in the
book would be when contact with Europeans first occurred. In the village of Abame, a white man
came riding on a bicycle (a never before seen object to the Africans). The people of Abame consulted
their gods on what to do with this strange man, and given the answer that he and his kind would cause
destruction, they killed him. Unfortunately, this little act of resistance was tiny compared to the wrath
of the Europeans. After his murder, other white men and their loyal Africans came to the

How Race And Stereotype Can Affect Justice Being Served
. This play takes place in 1963, the year in which the Civil Rights movement was being fought for.
The main topic of this play is to understand how race and stereotype can affect justice being served,
and the only way around this would be to view facts and override race and stereotype with evidence.
The play beings in New York City in a jury room, there are 12 jurors and each of them seem very
flustered, not only because its hot and the fan won t work, but because the trial seems to almost be a
waste of time for these twelve people. We learn the case they are dealing with is between a son and his
father; the son supposedly stabbed and killed his father. The father and the son live near the slums
which is where colored people live. Almost ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although this juror is puzzled at first he ends up growing confident in his vote and finds many facts to
back him up. In one incident he asks juror number two and juror number four who have glasses if they
sleep with their glasses on. They giggle and reply with no they do not sleep with their glasses on. Well
he uses this because the lady who witnessed the murder wore glasses, and in order for her to have
clearly been able to see the murder she would have to have her glasses on while she was in bed; since
that is when she witnessed the murder. Little by little the other jurors change their vote from guilty to
not guilty. And in the end justice is served and the boy is found not guilty. Juror number eight played
by Cameron Needham is key to this story because he is the one who is the only one with a vote not
guilty at first, and without him the boy would be found guilty. Juror number eight is very hesitant at
first when raising his hand to vote not guilty he raises it fairly slow as if scared of what the others
might think. As the play continues he is constantly on his feet and has his hands in his pockets most of
the time. This gesture of his hands in his pockets seems as if he is trying to protect himself from the
other jurors. Also, juror number eight being on his feet seems to show that he is nervous because he is
never in the same place for a long period of time. When the other jurors ask him questions or state
facts, he looks into their

Animals Is Inhumane, Ineffective, And Unethical
Imagine your pet at home whether it is a cat, dog, rabbit, or even a rat being purposely infected with a
disease, blinded, or given poison to observe how long a poison takes to kill the animal. This is a daily
occurrence in the world. At a minimum, 100 million animals die each year due to experimentation
including dogs, cats, monkeys, sheep, and a variety of other animals. Is animal experimentation
necessary? Whether it is for military or medical research, or even cosmetic testing, activists argue that
no reason exists as to why any living thing should be subjected to cruel experimentation for the benefit
of human beings. Experimentation on animals is inhumane, ineffective, and unethical. Scientists who
are for experimentation on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once the drug was given to humans with heart problems, the death rate increased by 30%. The FDA
has concluded over one half of newly approved drugs tested on animals had more serious side effects
when given to humans. An NIH clinical trial of fialuridine, a medication for Hepatitis B that was
tested on animals, was terminated after it caused liver failure in seven out of ten people. Five of these
people died and two required liver transplants after taking the drug. In 2003, a company by the name
of Élan Pharmaceuticals had to terminate trials of an Alzheimer s vaccine. The vaccine had cured
Alzheimer s mice but when given to humans, it led to brain inflammation. Another example includes
Vioxx, an arthritis drug tested on animals, which was reported to have caused an estimated 140,000
heart attacks and strokes before being terminated. Not only has animal experimentation harmed
human lives, but also potentially caused us to ignore real cures. Drugs that fail in animal testing are
discarded of. When drugs are disposed of it could cause us to potentially ignore real cures. For
instance, the drug Aspirin. Aspirin is one of our most relied upon pain relievers. When given to mice,
rats, dogs, cats, rabbits or monkeys: Aspirin causes teratogenic malformations. If scientists would have
tested the drug Acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin) on animals, they most likely would have disposed of it
due to the fetus deformities caused by it and we would not have Advil.

Mirror Image Of Electra In Aeschylus The Libation Bearers
In this paper I will discuss Aeschylus The Libation Bearers. Close reading reveals that Electra is
Orestes mirror image of a Fury. This thesis will be demonstrated through the analysis of passages
through the lens of the following principles of close reading: anomaly and parallel stories. To prove
this theory, the interpreter needs to offer evidence to show that Electra is a mirror image of Orestes, a
physical copy of himself meant to display his emotional and Fury like motivations towards killing his
mother. Hence, the interpreter then also has to prove that Electra shares the same characteristics as a
Fury. In this case, her parallel story with Orestes and the anomaly of their physical similarities proves
the first condition. To demonstrate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Apollo focuses on the oath to the Father (p.259; 626 628) and the value of knowledge over kinship
(p.260 261; 665 675), while the Furies focus on the mother s rights (p.259; 630 631) and the emotional
values of kinship, Disclaim your mother s blood? She gave you life. (p.258; 614) Athena weighs both
of these arguments out and makes a compromise that takes in both sides (p.264 265; 748 758). In
comparison, Orestes compromises Electra and Pylades motivations in The Libation Bearers by killing
Clytemnestra with motivations of emotion, You flung me into a life of pain (p.217; 900) as well as
those of oaths and logic, my father s destiny...decrees your death. (p.219; 913) Hence, what Apollo
and the Furies are to Athena, is what Pylades and Electra are to Orestes. As discussed in class, Pylades
is the disguise of Apollo, and Athena represents humanity. When combining these conclusions,
Orestes also represents humanity, with Pylades as his Apollo, and Electra as his mirror image of a

Slack Off Research Paper
I am a slacker. There is no possible way I will deny that. In some ways, slacking off is both a good
thing and a bad thing. I will admit that I love slacking because I don t have to worry about anything
that is so important and that I can only focus on my video games. It s true. Every time I m at home, I
play video games and slack off. Every time I am in school, I slack off and feel like that I shouldn t do
my work at all. That s what most slackers feel like. They feel like they shouldn t do anything that feels
important with the exception of video games.
What is my advice for future students? Do not become a slacker. That s the only advice I can give.
What are the main reasons? First, slacking off is not a good thing depending on how you look at it.
Slacking off can drive you away from your school work and you will definitely not graduate from
high school and you will most likely not get a good job because you didn t go to college. The second
reason is that slacking off will get you nowhere. School is the most important thing in your life and
slacking off will not help that in any way. You need to graduate in order to have a job and in order to
get money so that you can buy what every you want. Finally, slacking off will not help your family
members. Let s say that you have chores to do. You were asked to wash the dishes, cut the grass, clean
your room and many other things. You feel like the chores are of no importance so you slack off and
play video games all the long. If you slack off, you can t help your parents around the house or do ...

My message is this: if you care about your life, if you care about your school work, if you care about
anything in your life that isn t about video games, you shouldn t slack off. Think about that for quite a
while and see if slacking off will do anything in your life, even see if slacking off will improve or
decrease your future in any way

The Creation Of The Wall Of China
The creation of the wall of China was the most spectacular construction project of all time. It is the
most spectacular because of the amount of people who worked on it, the length of the wall, and the
time period it was built in. The wall of china was built to keep the Chinese in, and the rest of the world
out. It was built under the rule of emperor Shi Huangdi. The creation of the Great Wall of China was
actually the linking of walls that were already built by other kingdoms. It was built after the
unification of china in the beginning of the Qin Dynasty (221 206 BC). It was a massive construction
project in which a lot of time was invested, and in which many suffered. It was the most ambitious
engineering project ever conceived. This extraordinary project could have never been built without the
unification of China. Before china was unified, everything was chaotic and disastrous. Previous to the
unification of china, I don t think people could have come together to build a wall as such. China was
made up of a number of states each fighting for supremacy. There were a number of wars going on
between the different states and neither was successful. It wasn t until the Qin kingdom rose and
destroyed the other kingdoms. They destroyed most of the kingdoms but one was still left, they were
called the Chu. They fought with them for about fifteen year and then they finally surrendered. They
were ruthless and ambitious therefore the only one who could have unified China. Two

Euthyphro And Pious Analysis
First Reading Response
Socrates meets Euthyphro outside of the courthouse and begin discussing the nature of impious and
pious acts. Euthyphro claims to be an expert on these matters so he agrees to help Socrates understand
piety better. Euthyphro s first definition is the pious is to do what I am doing now, to prosecute the
wrongdoer, be it about murder. (5d) Socrates objects to this saying that this would only counts as an
instance of piety, and he is more interested in a universal element of all pious acts. Euthyphro
elaborates to say that piety is what all the gods love, and impiety is what all the gods hate. (6e)
Socrates rebukes that there are matters that some of the gods love, while other gods may hate. Socrates
objects saying that gods disagree on issues, and that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Euthyphro then offers a third definition; Piety is what all the gods love, and Impiety is what all the
gods hate. (9d) Socrates opens up his objection by asking is the pious being loved by the gods because
it is pious, or is it pious because it is being loved by the gods? (10a) This is the premise to his
argument about the difference in being loved and loving something. To explain his point further
Socrates uses numerous examples of carrying and being carried. To be carried one must first be
carrying something. The same goes for verbs that affect others, for instance to be seen one must first
be seeing something. The carrying must be going on before something can be called carried. So
something is loved when someone is loving it. It cannot be loved before something has loved it.
Euthyphro agrees that the pious is being loved by the gods because it is pious. Socrates then looks to
the second option of the

The Effects Of Physical Abuse On Child Abuse
The United States has been fighting the war against child abuse since the first case of child abuse in
1874 that included a child being beaten and chained against her will (Meadows, 2014). Many people
hear the words child abuse and think of physical abuse. While, many people are correct in thinking of
physical abuse, an Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) study done by the CDC shows that although
physical abuse is the leading form of child abuse, emotional or psychological abuse is the second
leading form of child abuse (2014). Although one would think sexual abuse along with physical abuse
would be the prominent form of abuse, this is not the case. One of the major reasons emotional neglect
is more prominent than sexual abuse is due to the fact that emotional abuse is not being overlooked as
often as it used to. In fact, it is now being seen as the gateway to physical and sexual abuse
(Garbarino, Guttman, Seeley, 1988). The amounts of consequences that come from being abused as a
child are countless as well as life changing, some of these life changing effects were identified by the
CDC as drug abuse, sexual transmitted diseases, suicidal thoughts, and difficulty learning (2014).
When a child who has been abused begins school they approach the classroom setting, similar to a dog
that has been abused by its owner approaches other humans, the child approaches the classroom with a
skeptical attitude (Fink, A. H., Janssen, K. N, 1992). They are constantly avoiding

Comparing Cardiac Muscle And Brain Tissue
1) Comparing and contrasting cardiac Muscle tissue (figure a) and brain tissue (figure d)
Commonalities in the structures and functions of muscle tissue and brain tissue
In cardiac muscle, a single nucleus is located in the middle of each fibre. The brain tissue also has a
nucleus which is located in the middle of cell body. The cardiac muscle and brain tissue don t have the
exact same function. The cardiac muscle and the brain tissue don t work together because the cardiac
muscle doesn t takes any instructions from the brain tissue (Neurones). This means that the cardiac
muscle contracts automatically.
Differences in the structures, functions and location of muscle tissue and brain tissue
The cardiac muscle consists of long branched fibres. Whereas, the brain tissue has spider web like
structure. The cardiac muscle cell are made up of fibres. The function of cardiac muscle is to help the
heart to pump blood. The function of brain tissue is to send messages to and from the brain. The
cardiac muscle is present inside the heart. However, the brain tissue is located inside brain.

The Security Concerns That The Internet Of Things
This paper looks at the security concerns that the Internet of Things, or IOT carries along with it. The
Internet of Things is defined as a proposed development of the Internet in which everyday objects
have network connectivity, allowing them to send and receive data This increasing level of
connectivity and interconnectivity certainly makes everyday tasks easier for the average person, but at
the same time, it makes finding holes in security measures easier as well. The Internet of Things is
said to have been in the works in the 1990 s. In 1999, the term Internet of Things is created by Kevin
Ashton, the executive director of Auto ID. Auto ID is an academic research network pertaining to the
Internet of Things. The Internet of Things took a huge step with the use and introduction of RFID
(Radio Frequency IDentification). RFID really pushed the future of the Internet of Things, as it has a
direct relationship to what the Internet of Things is all about, the communication between devices and
objects. An example of this is an RFID tag being embedded in an intermodal container full of fruit,
and arriving/departing a specific port at a shipping depot. Once the container passes a designated
point, the time of arrival/departure, temperature in the container, days until expiration, and other key
information.
Although the Internet of Things is a great thing, it carries along many security and privacy concerns.

The MTS consists of ocean, coastal, and inland waterways, ports, intermodal connections (connecting
points for changes in modes of transportation), vessels, and commercial, military, and recreational
users. The expected increase of commercial and recreational vessel traffic, continued ocean and inland
water research from vessels, and the operation of U.S. military vessel traffic will place burdens on
waterway and port safety and security services, and raise the risk of accidents (National Strategy for
the Marine Transportation System, 2008). Vessels face lots of vulnerabilities within the U.S MTS. For
instance, vessels that deliver cargos through the supply chain is vulnerable to penetration and
unauthorized access by criminal, terrorist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, natural deserters such as earthquake pose a big risk to the MTS and vessels within it. A
natural disaster is a sudden calamitous event that is the result of atmospheric and other geological
imbalances that threatens the viability of the organization and is characterized by creating chaos,
disruption of operations, confusion, and even death of employees (Morrison, et al 2014, p. 66). Each
year, natural disaster increase in number and magnitude, disrupt and damages lots of lives and
properties, and in some cases trigger migration; there were reports of 32 tornadoes in Kansas,
Colorado, and Texas, as at April 2012, together with major winter storms in mid Atlantic and Eastern
United States the same period of the year, which was attributed to the likely negative consequence
from climate change, poor land use, and disruptive atmospheric imbalances, resulting in severe
drought in some areas as well as widespread flooding in others (Wahlstrom 2012; Morrison, et al

Electronic Progression Of Social Media
Social media is the product of innovation and electronic progression: Social media are webpages and
applications that enable the creation and distribution of information: Social media is the future. Since
the beginning of time, humans have had the instinctual desire to communicate with one another. With
impeccable capabilities to bring people together, the world uses social media to interact and stay
connected. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. are some examples of the everyday media networks
which people use to share thoughts, news, ideas, photos, and videos. Social media is heavily used for
recreational uses; staying connected with friends and family at all times is a huge draw to social
media. Social media, not limited to social purposes, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From there on, children are exposed to mass media including ads, magazines, television, etc. People
subconsciously form ideas and preferences of what beauty is to them, based on what they have been
exposed to. When women become over exposed to unrealistic beauty images, it can cause many
problems. Constantly comparing body images results in body dissatisfaction, low self esteem,
depression, and Internalization of [unrealistic images of female beauty] can lead to body
dissatisfaction, a key predictor of disordered eating (qtd. in Perloff 363). Women who have individual

Vacation In Hawaii
Once upon a time, a family of five, a mother, father, and triplets, decided to take a vacation by going
to Honolulu, Hawaii to stay in a deluxe hotel. The three boys names were Big Timmy, Little Timmy,
and Timmy. Everyone was very excited to go ride waves, eat food, and sleep a lot. The flight attendant
has just called everyone to board the plane. The three boys and their parents rushed to the front of the
line so they could get the best seats. Two hours before landing, the clouds became grey and it started
to rain lightly. Attention passengers, we will be landing in Brooklyn, New York due to extreme
weather conditions. , announced the co pilot. Later that evening, Timmy, Big Timmy, Little Timmy,
and their parents were exhausted and worrying about finding a place to stay the night. The father had
made the decision to stay in a Motel 6 for a day until they figured out how to get back home. The
vacation to Hawaii was ruined but that didn t stop the three boys from having fun. Timmy sprinted
away and yelled, Let s go swimming! The two others followed while their parents looked at one
another in disappointment. The boys noticed lights started flickering down the hallway. What the three
boys didn t know was that the hotel was haunted because a woman had died ten years ago from a
seizure. Meanwhile, all three of them jumped into the pool which hasn t been cleaned for one whole
year. As they were playing Marco Polo Timmy felt a slight tug and yelled What was that! He

Mental Retardation and Child Development
There are general stages children pass through as they develop and certain time frames during which
these transitions occur. There is not a specific time that is considered normal for any individual child
to attain a goal, as cultural and environmental factors are also important to development, but
researchers have formed general, broad ranges of time in which skills such as walking and talking are
displayed. Children with disabilities or delays may follow different paths of development. Children
with mental retardation have been found to pass through typical stages of development, such as Jean
Piaget s stages of cognitive development, but at a much slower rate. Burack, Hodapp, and Zigler
(1998) however, contrast the idea that slowness ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Developmental disabilities also are limited to more severe and chronic disabilities, while there are
broader levels of mental retardation ranging from mild to profound (U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services, 2006). The U.S. Census does not collect data on persons with mental retardation or
intellectual disabilities, but there are best estimates by several authorities in the field as to how
common mental retardation is. It is estimated that about three percent of the national population is
affected by mental retardation. This figure includes those who are currently receiving special services,
those who used to receive special services, and those unknown cases. Hodapp and Zigler (1986) have
found the ratio of endogenous (no brain damage) to exogenous (organic damage) retardation to be
75% to 25%. These statistics translate into one out of every ten families being affected by at least one
member with an intellectual disability (USDHHS, 2006). According to the Children s Defense Fund
(2003), about five percent of the nation s preschoolers have a disability and require early intervention
or special needs programs. Low income families and families living in poverty are at a much greater
risk of having a child with a disability. An individual s ability to function mentally, physically, and
behaviorally depends on the severity of retardation. The

Raisin In The Sun Comparison
A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality (Lennon) . In
Lorraine Hansberry s 1959 play, A Raisin in the Sun, the African American Younger family lives in a
small rugged apartment. They are faced with the struggles of racism, self pride, and dreams deferred.
Young Walter Lee Younger dreams of being a respectable man able to provide for his family but is set
back by his family s heritage and lack of wealth. Hansberry s renowned play has been transformed
into an ABC production, in which, she would have likely praised. Although her play was altered, the
movie symbolized everything Hansberry stood for. Kenny Leon s recreation of A Raisin in the Sun
evolved Hansberry s masterpiece through the inclusion of developed settings, themes of money versus
pride, and characters played by astounding actors. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the story, the characters are placed in many different settings, such as the Clybourne Park house, the
Green Lantern bar, and the back room abortion clinic (Lloyd). Not only were new scenes added, but
some were elevated. The original scenes that take place in the dreary tarnished apartment seem to
portray the apartment to be much less dilapidated than in the play (Toto). Kenny Leonś representation
of A Raisin in the Sun was modified throughout, yet, Hansberryś vision was still preserved (Taylor).
Walter Lee Younger s yearn for wealth ultimately results in a difficult decision for his family. In the
play, Walter expresses his desires to his son, Travis, in a very important scene that was left out of the
movie. Without the interaction of Walter and Travis, the importance of money is not recreated in the
movie as it was in the play. In A Raisin in the Sun, the Youngers are forced to choose between
financial stability or five generations of pride. As in the play, Leon kept the same idea as Hansberry by
allowing the Youngers to be prideful (A Raisin in the

Identity Theft Essay
The internet has become a part of every day life, in fact for many it is their life. You can meet other
people, play games, do research, communicate with loved ones half way across the country, and now
you can even shop and bank online.
You can buy anything from baby food to prescription drugs on the internet and it will be delivered in a
timely fashion to your front door. No line, no commute time, no annoying shoppers and no
incompetent sales persons.
Banking online is a recently developed convenience. How often do you forget to pay your bills? With
online banking your bills are paid on time. You also have immediate access to your bank statements
updated by the minute.
It sounds almost too good to be true and it is, sort of. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I also am assuming that most internet users regularly check their banks policies on how to protect
themselves.
I believe that with the right information and tools identity theft on the internet would not be as large of
a problem that it has grown into today.
Phishing is the newest type of internet theft and could be the most dangerous!
1% to 20% of those attacked by Phishing scams become victims. Phishers uses fraudulent E mails and
web sites that are so close to the real thing that many consumers are fooled by the copied images, links
and texts that are often from the legitimate web site that the consumer thinks they are visiting. The
Phishers are after your personal information; usernames, passwords, credit card numbers, home
addresses, social security number, pretty much anything that can help open false accounts or empty
your already existing accounts.
What To Do If You Think You are a Victim
First Contact your bank, your credit card company(s) and any other financial institution you are

Earth Bound Telescopes
Clearly the better and stronger our telescopes and other methods used to evaluate the sky will result in
further discoveries. Not only do we have Earth bound telescopes; we have telescopes in the sky that
can get even closer to other matter whether that be planets, stars, comets, asteroids, etc. The textbook
also notes radial velocity and how the gravitational pull of a planet results in the star wobbling. If the
wobble happens to occur along our line of sight to the star, then we see small fluctuations in the star s
radial velocity, which can be measured using the Doppler effect (Chaisson McMillan, 2014, p 371)
allowing us to estimate the mass of the planet (Chaisson McMillan, 2014, p 371). I found this website:
http://www.planetary.org/explore/space topics/exoplanets/how to search for exoplanets.html that gives
three ways. They are noted as radial velocity (already stated); transit photometry (having to do with
the brightness or lack thereof of a star when another planet passes between it and the Earth (How to
Search for Exoplanets)), and Microlensing (stated as the only real method that is capable of
discovering other planets at huge distances from Earth (How to Search for Exoplanets)). It further
notes that while radial velocity can identify them within 100 light years, transit photometry can
identify them more than 100 light years (100 s in fact), and transit photometry can find those that are
thousands of light years away. I need to understand ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Exploring Freedom in Edward Bellamy s Looking Backward Essay
The definition of freedom depends entirely on how the phrase freedom from... ends. Perhaps a most
straightforward understanding of freedom is the laissez faire emphasis on limiting the power of
government to interfere in economic and social matters. In this state of absolute freedom, however,
inequalities exist between people, so that freedom from a controlling government does not imply
individuals freedom of contract, movement, legal protection, equal rights through citizenship, or
political voice. In light of the persistence of slavery in the US through the 19th century, freedom as an
individual s legal status separated people who could be citizens from people who were lifelong slaves.
Even among legally free people, economic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Looking Backward, Bellamy outlined one proposal for protecting the freedom and welfare of all
citizens through equal access to education, job opportunities, and wealth. Furthermore, he expanded
the term citizen to include women and imagined a system in which men and women contribute equally
to industry and home life.
In Bellamy s vision of a future America, the federal government has taken control of almost all aspects
of life to maximize productivity and efficiency and to give each citizen an equally high quality of life.
The government, unplagued by corruption, manages the education of all children from age 6 to 21 and
all aspects of industrial production, the domestic distribution of goods, and foreign trade. All citizens
must serve in some capacity in the Industrial Army from age 21 to 45, and are given the same
allowance from the government regardless of their occupation, skill level, or age. Throughout the
nation, in both rural and urban areas, students follow a single curriculum of mental and physical
development, warehouses contain a single wide selection of goods, homes have access to a single long
program of recorded music, and local governments have very few powers. Representative democracy
is kept, but modified so that voters are organized by trade guild, and only citizens who have excelled

How Mourad Mazouz Started his Restaurant, Sketch
In 2001, just after signing the lease for 9 Conduit Street, London a Grade II listed building Mourad
Mazouz went to Paris. Not yet knowing what he would do inside he went on a mission to find a chef
to collaborate with. Mazouz was already a reputable and successful restaurateur with his celebrated
restaurants Au Bascou and 404 in Paris as well as Momo in London. The listed townhouse was
designed as the private residence of James Viner by James Wyatt in 1779. After that it filled many
roles over the years including being converted into the headquarters of Royal Society of British
Architects (RIBA) from 1887 1909. In 1954 it became Christian Dior s first boutique where Dior
stored his collections in London.
In Paris Mazouz set up a meeting with Pierre Gagnaire, My plan was to ask if he had someone in mind
in his kitchen for this venture, but he said, Why not me? I freaked out, I had not planned to work with
a master. But I said, That s great!
It reminded Gagnaire of Saint Étienne where his restaurant had gone bankrupt during the recession of
the early 1990s. Mazouz later elaborated His restaurant was doing molecular food before anyone else,
so for me the story of Sketch, and our friendship, started with his old restaurant. He s told me a few
times since, that for him, Sketch is like a revenge: while it couldn t work in Saint Étienne, it could in
London.
Spanning two floors of this building, Sketch contains a tearoom, two bars and three restaurants as well

The Replication Of DNA In Escherichia Coli
Introduction
Today s issue of Biology: Meselson and Stahl (Vol 4, 1958) includes a groundbreaking development
into further understanding of DNA Replication. On pages 671 682 is an article titled The Replication
of DNA in Escherichia Coli . Meselson and Stahl conducted an experiment to understand how DNA
self replicates by the use of Bacterial transformation to clone parental DNA.
In the article, Meselson and Stahl investigate the distribution between the parental and daughter DNA
molecules. This is achieved by the use of Radio Isotopic labelling. Uniform Isotopic N15 was grown
in E.coli consisting of N14 medium to observe the distribution of N15 DNA macromolecules. Within
the article, the authors also discuss the problems they faced during the investigation and how
significant Watsons and Cricks Double helix suggests how DNA self replicates.
What is DNA?
The discovery of the structure of DNA has always been associated with Watson and Crick. Their
double helix structure, which they developed in 1983, has been used as a model to understand how
DNA self replicates (Karp, 2009). The structure of DNA is made up of covalent bonds between 4
unique nucleotide bases. These bases bind together via complementary base pairing, therefore
allowing Adenine to only bind with Thymine, and Cytosine with Guanine (Penn State, Ebery College
of Science, 2016). The use of covalent bonds makes the structure strongly bound like a zipper.
However, just like a zipper, it can easily open up

Pet Shop Boys and Beauty Essay
Success amp; Jealousy in Beauty Beauty, written by Jane Martin in the mid nineteen hundreds, is an
ironic play about two successful women, Bethany and Carla. Both women were the same age yet
complete opposites. They also had completely different personalities and were unhappy with their
lives. Martin casted and characterized them this way to illustrate a few themes. The drama was mainly
centered on the theme that no one is ever happy unless they get their wishes granted. However, in
these two women s cases, getting what they wanted caused them to realize there is nothing wrong with
being different. These two themes can be seen through the two character s success, jealousy, and a
genie. Bethany and Carla experienced success in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

and she has the charm, personality, and is perfectly pretty (736). Of course, Bethany places a
stereotype on beautiful by saying, it is the real deal. Carla gets discounts on makeup for no reason.
Parents treat beautiful children better and they even statistically get paid more. Beautiful people can
have sex any time, any place (736). Carla, confused, did not understand why Bethany wanted to be
just like her. Bethany hated Carla most of the time because of her beauty. This leads Carla to go on a
rant about beauty and why it is so difficult to live and be beautiful simultaneously. Carla tells Bethany
to be herself and she will have an amazing life. Bethany begs to differ and says, it is what everyone
wants to be. Money can only make you buy things. Beauty makes you the center of the entire
universe. All eyes are always on those individuals that are beautiful (736). Carla says, Bethany will
hate her life is she was beautiful. She would be miserable and unhappy (736). Bethany then pulls out a
genie in a bottle. Bethany, determined, reiterates, Carla s thoughts do not matter. Carla was just lying
about everything, which explains why she had no friends or a long relationship. Bethany wanted to be
just like Carla, and she had a god dam genie and only one wish to make (736). Bethany indeed used

Raoul Hausmann s Influence In Three Selected Art Works
The following are three selected art works demonstrate this influence.
In the photomontage Der Kunstkritiker or The Art Critic (1919 20) Raoul Hausmann distorts and
disproportions the human form through deconstruction to have a simultaneously insulting and
humorous effect on his viewers.
Hausmann was an Austrian artist who adhered to strict expressionistic styles until introduced to
Dadaism, an unrealistic artistic and literary movement of many different mediums occurring from
1916 to 1924. Hausmann became one of the founding members of Dada in Berlin; a style which
centres on the mockery of materialistic and nationalistic attitudes formed in World War 1. Its
influences include other avant garde movements such as Cubism, Futurism, Constructivism, and
Expressionism. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Controversy Between Theory To Measurement And...
The role of measurement
How does the mechanism proceed from theory to measurement and to policy making?
Once the phenomenon is examined within a conceptual framework; I intend to go further with a
methodological understanding and questioning of the mechanism in which immigration is modelled,
measured, and intervened with the policies. In order to inquire this, the first emphasis goes on the link
between theory and measurement; and then to the way the scientific process is translated into real
world via policy making. Thinking how numbers dependency on the subject matter (individuals) can
easily turn to the dependency of individuals to the numbers just because policy matters for people; a
proper understanding and measuring people and their environment as a whole appears to be essential.
It can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These indices on the other hand, can be seen as the way authorities (states or group of states, i.e.
European Union) define and identify immigrants since they play role in policy making. So, the extent
these indices recognize identity can be symbolized as the extent states and policies recognize
immigrants as they have identities (heterogeneous mixture), in interaction with others, and do change.
Following the discussion on the problems in the economic theory; the validity of the indices would
then depend on how adequately they take the individuals, their change and interaction into account. If
what matters in immigration is not only an ultimate goal set in one point of time or its consequences in
performance in an isolated work place; but the goals, as individuals do, evolve within interaction of
identities of all entities (people, groups, institutions, lands) maybe in different frequencies or different
ways; then indices as the way authorities understand individuals should well take this into account.

Dante Alighieri s Influence on Italian Culture
Dante Alighieri was a very well known and influential poet in early literature. amp;#8220;He was not
only a poet, he was also a philosophical thinker, an active politician, and a religious visionary ;
(Holmes 1). Dante was born in Florence in 1265, into the Guelph political party, one of the two main
parties in Florence. The Guelphs were aristocrats and nobles. They supported the church and papacy
and were against the Renaissance. Their opposition was the Ghibellini Party who consisted of the
rising merchant class. They supported the emperor and wanted to gain power from the pope (Holmes
22). During his earlier years Dante was neutral politically, but he ... Show more content on

His writings have been hailed amp;#8220;the pillars on which the European literary tradition has been
built ; (Dante: The Divine amp;#8230; Internet). The Divine Comedy is very influential and is
considered as the greatest piece of poetry in early European literature. amp;#8220;Dante amp;#8217;s
Divine Comedy has rightly been regarded as the supreme literary expression of a crucial stage in
European thought ; (Holmes 1). Dante also influenced the style of poetry by introducing a format that
consisted of three canticles each divided into 33 or 34 cantos. Many poets after him have copied this
format (Wilkins 12).
His most famous piece of literature, The Divine Comedy, is said to be important also because of
amp;#8220;It amp;#8217;s place in the history of the development of the Italian language ; (Dante:
The Divine amp;#8230; Internet). To understand this we need to look at the language and writings at
that time in history. During Dante amp;#8217;s lifetime different dialects of Italian were spoken in
different parts of the country (Dante Alighieri, 1265 1321 Internet). Dante was a very skilled writer
who wrote in both his Florentine Italian dialect and Latin, which was unusual since most scholarly
writings at that time were in Latin (Dante Internet). Dante however believed that the language of one
amp;#8217;s family was noble and he broke the traditions of those before him.

  • 2. The Hellenistic Homemaker Essay The Hellenistic Homemaker In both Xenophon s Oeconomicus and Lysias defense of Euphiletus murder of Eratosthenes, insight into the purpose and function of Athenian marriage may be gained by examination of the speeches of two citizens about their wives and their homes. Through both texts, it becomes apparent that the citizen s value of his wife is based upon his wife s ability as an oikonomikos or skilled household manager (Strauss, 3). It is through filling this role as her husband s housekeeper that an Athenian woman experienced a loss of personal freedom and found herself trapped within a marriage in which she had little contact or much in common with her husband. A woman s role as oikonomikos is described by Euphiletus address ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rather, when I considered for myself, and your parents for you, whom we might take as the best partner for the household and children, I chose you, and your parents, as it appears, from among the possibilities chose me (Xenophon, VII.10 11). Indeed, the girl is looked upon as an employee of the husband and the oikos. Euphiletus states how ...in the beginning she was the best of women. She was a clever housewife, economical and exact in her management of everything (Freeman, 44). For Euphiletus, his wife s worth was based totally on her managerial skills. Through Euphiletus and Socrates, the five requirements of a good oikonomikos come to be apparent. The first requirement is that a new wife be young, so that she might be taught by her new husband the ways to suit himself and his oikos perfectly. Socrates muses, ...it seems to me there are certain ages at which both horses and human beings are immediately useful as well as susceptible to improvement (Xenophon, III.10). Next, the young wife must be uneducated so that she might be trained in just the way the husband wishes, and he will not suffer because of any incorrect training she may have acquired. Socrates is asked by Ischomachos How, Socrates, he said, could she have known anything when I took her, since she came to me when she was not yet fifteen, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Postcolonial Literature In Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart Postcolonial literature was written during the time period when European countries began colonizing Africa on the premise that the Africans were savages and needed help to become more civilized. The Europeans believed that they would achieve this by setting up governments similar to their own, ignoring the ones the African tribes already had set up, and forcefully converting them to Christianity, much to the Africans dismay. In response, the Africans could not do much to dispel the white people from their lands, so some wrote postcolonial literature to display their grievances against the whites. Chinua Achebe s, Things Fall Apart, is a great example. Within this postcolonial literature there are numerous reasons as to why it is so, like decolonization struggles, appropriation of colonial language, and colonization. In Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe gives multiple examples of decolonization struggles, or when the Igbo people fought against the white colonization. An early example in the book would be when contact with Europeans first occurred. In the village of Abame, a white man came riding on a bicycle (a never before seen object to the Africans). The people of Abame consulted their gods on what to do with this strange man, and given the answer that he and his kind would cause destruction, they killed him. Unfortunately, this little act of resistance was tiny compared to the wrath of the Europeans. After his murder, other white men and their loyal Africans came to the ... The main topic of this play is to understand how race and stereotype can affect justice being served, and the only way around this would be to view facts and override race and stereotype with evidence. The play beings in New York City in a jury room, there are 12 jurors and each of them seem very flustered, not only because its hot and the fan won t work, but because the trial seems to almost be a waste of time for these twelve people. We learn the case they are dealing with is between a son and his father; the son supposedly stabbed and killed his father. The father and the son live near the slums which is where colored people live. Almost ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although this juror is puzzled at first he ends up growing confident in his vote and finds many facts to back him up. In one incident he asks juror number two and juror number four who have glasses if they sleep with their glasses on. They giggle and reply with no they do not sleep with their glasses on. Well he uses this because the lady who witnessed the murder wore glasses, and in order for her to have clearly been able to see the murder she would have to have her glasses on while she was in bed; since that is when she witnessed the murder. Little by little the other jurors change their vote from guilty to not guilty. And in the end justice is served and the boy is found not guilty. Juror number eight played by Cameron Needham is key to this story because he is the one who is the only one with a vote not guilty at first, and without him the boy would be found guilty. Juror number eight is very hesitant at first when raising his hand to vote not guilty he raises it fairly slow as if scared of what the others might think. As the play continues he is constantly on his feet and has his hands in his pockets most of the time. This gesture of his hands in his pockets seems as if he is trying to protect himself from the other jurors. Also, juror number eight being on his feet seems to show that he is nervous because he is never in the same place for a long period of time. When the other jurors ask him questions or state facts, he looks into their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Animals Is Inhumane, Ineffective, And Unethical Imagine your pet at home whether it is a cat, dog, rabbit, or even a rat being purposely infected with a disease, blinded, or given poison to observe how long a poison takes to kill the animal. This is a daily occurrence in the world. At a minimum, 100 million animals die each year due to experimentation including dogs, cats, monkeys, sheep, and a variety of other animals. Is animal experimentation necessary? Whether it is for military or medical research, or even cosmetic testing, activists argue that no reason exists as to why any living thing should be subjected to cruel experimentation for the benefit of human beings. The FDA has concluded over one half of newly approved drugs tested on animals had more serious side effects when given to humans. An NIH clinical trial of fialuridine, a medication for Hepatitis B that was tested on animals, was terminated after it caused liver failure in seven out of ten people. Five of these people died and two required liver transplants after taking the drug. In 2003, a company by the name of Élan Pharmaceuticals had to terminate trials of an Alzheimer s vaccine. The vaccine had cured Alzheimer s mice but when given to humans, it led to brain inflammation. Another example includes Vioxx, an arthritis drug tested on animals, which was reported to have caused an estimated 140,000 heart attacks and strokes before being terminated. • 7. Mirror Image Of Electra In Aeschylus The Libation Bearers In this paper I will discuss Aeschylus The Libation Bearers. Close reading reveals that Electra is Orestes mirror image of a Fury. This thesis will be demonstrated through the analysis of passages through the lens of the following principles of close reading: anomaly and parallel stories. To prove this theory, the interpreter needs to offer evidence to show that Electra is a mirror image of Orestes, a physical copy of himself meant to display his emotional and Fury like motivations towards killing his mother. Hence, the interpreter then also has to prove that Electra shares the same characteristics as a Fury. In this case, her parallel story with Orestes and the anomaly of their physical similarities proves the first condition. To demonstrate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Apollo focuses on the oath to the Father (p.259; 626 628) and the value of knowledge over kinship (p.260 261; 665 675), while the Furies focus on the mother s rights (p.259; 630 631) and the emotional values of kinship, Disclaim your mother s blood? She gave you life. (p.258; 614) Athena weighs both of these arguments out and makes a compromise that takes in both sides (p.264 265; 748 758). In comparison, Orestes compromises Electra and Pylades motivations in The Libation Bearers by killing Clytemnestra with motivations of emotion, You flung me into a life of pain (p.217; 900) as well as those of oaths and logic, my father s destiny...decrees your death. (p.219; 913) Hence, what Apollo and the Furies are to Athena, is what Pylades and Electra are to Orestes. As discussed in class, Pylades is the disguise of Apollo, and Athena represents humanity. I will admit that I love slacking because I don t have to worry about anything that is so important and that I can only focus on my video games. It s true. Every time I m at home, I play video games and slack off. Every time I am in school, I slack off and feel like that I shouldn t do my work at all. That s what most slackers feel like. They feel like they shouldn t do anything that feels important with the exception of video games. What is my advice for future students? Do not become a slacker. That s the only advice I can give. What are the main reasons? First, slacking off is not a good thing depending on how you look at it. Slacking off can drive you away from your school work and you will definitely not graduate from high school and you will most likely not get a good job because you didn t go to college. The second reason is that slacking off will get you nowhere. School is the most important thing in your life and slacking off will not help that in any way. You need to graduate in order to have a job and in order to get money so that you can buy what every you want. Finally, slacking off will not help your family members. Let s say that you have chores to do. You were asked to wash the dishes, cut the grass, clean your room and many other things. You feel like the chores are of no importance so you slack off and play video games all the long. If you slack off, you can t help your parents around the house or do ... • 9. The Creation Of The Wall Of China The creation of the wall of China was the most spectacular construction project of all time. It is the most spectacular because of the amount of people who worked on it, the length of the wall, and the time period it was built in. The wall of china was built to keep the Chinese in, and the rest of the world out. It was built under the rule of emperor Shi Huangdi. The creation of the Great Wall of China was actually the linking of walls that were already built by other kingdoms. It was built after the unification of china in the beginning of the Qin Dynasty (221 206 BC). It was a massive construction project in which a lot of time was invested, and in which many suffered. It was the most ambitious engineering project ever conceived. This extraordinary project could have never been built without the unification of China. Before china was unified, everything was chaotic and disastrous. Previous to the unification of china, I don t think people could have come together to build a wall as such. China was made up of a number of states each fighting for supremacy. There were a number of wars going on between the different states and neither was successful. It wasn t until the Qin kingdom rose and destroyed the other kingdoms. They destroyed most of the kingdoms but one was still left, they were called the Chu. They fought with them for about fifteen year and then they finally surrendered. They were ruthless and ambitious therefore the only one who could have unified China. Two ... • 10. Euthyphro And Pious Analysis First Reading Response Socrates meets Euthyphro outside of the courthouse and begin discussing the nature of impious and pious acts. Euthyphro claims to be an expert on these matters so he agrees to help Socrates understand piety better. Euthyphro s first definition is the pious is to do what I am doing now, to prosecute the wrongdoer, be it about murder. (5d) Socrates objects to this saying that this would only counts as an instance of piety, and he is more interested in a universal element of all pious acts. Euthyphro elaborates to say that piety is what all the gods love, and impiety is what all the gods hate. (6e) Socrates rebukes that there are matters that some of the gods love, while other gods may hate. Socrates objects saying that gods disagree on issues, and that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Euthyphro then offers a third definition; Piety is what all the gods love, and Impiety is what all the gods hate. (9d) Socrates opens up his objection by asking is the pious being loved by the gods because it is pious, or is it pious because it is being loved by the gods? (10a) This is the premise to his argument about the difference in being loved and loving something. To explain his point further Socrates uses numerous examples of carrying and being carried. To be carried one must first be carrying something. The same goes for verbs that affect others, for instance to be seen one must first be seeing something. The carrying must be going on before something can be called carried. So something is loved when someone is loving it. It cannot be loved before something has loved it. • 11. The Effects Of Physical Abuse On Child Abuse The United States has been fighting the war against child abuse since the first case of child abuse in 1874 that included a child being beaten and chained against her will (Meadows, 2014). Many people hear the words child abuse and think of physical abuse. While, many people are correct in thinking of physical abuse, an Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) study done by the CDC shows that although physical abuse is the leading form of child abuse, emotional or psychological abuse is the second leading form of child abuse (2014). Although one would think sexual abuse along with physical abuse would be the prominent form of abuse, this is not the case. One of the major reasons emotional neglect is more prominent than sexual abuse is due to the fact that emotional abuse is not being overlooked as often as it used to. In fact, it is now being seen as the gateway to physical and sexual abuse (Garbarino, Guttman, Seeley, 1988). The amounts of consequences that come from being abused as a child are countless as well as life changing, some of these life changing effects were identified by the CDC as drug abuse, sexual transmitted diseases, suicidal thoughts, and difficulty learning (2014). When a child who has been abused begins school they approach the classroom setting, similar to a dog that has been abused by its owner approaches other humans, the child approaches the classroom with a skeptical attitude (Fink, A. The reason this was so well preserved is that coral does not grow on gold. The wood inside the gold veneer was deteriorated, which made it very fragile and for that reason, he has not attempted to retrieve it from the water. • 20. The Security Concerns That The Internet Of Things This paper looks at the security concerns that the Internet of Things, or IOT carries along with it. The Internet of Things is defined as a proposed development of the Internet in which everyday objects have network connectivity, allowing them to send and receive data This increasing level of connectivity and interconnectivity certainly makes everyday tasks easier for the average person, but at the same time, it makes finding holes in security measures easier as well. The Internet of Things is said to have been in the works in the 1990 s. In 1999, the term Internet of Things is created by Kevin Ashton, the executive director of Auto ID. Auto ID is an academic research network pertaining to the Internet of Things. The Internet of Things took a huge step with the use and introduction of RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification). RFID really pushed the future of the Internet of Things, as it has a direct relationship to what the Internet of Things is all about, the communication between devices and objects. An example of this is an RFID tag being embedded in an intermodal container full of fruit, and arriving/departing a specific port at a shipping depot. Once the container passes a designated point, the time of arrival/departure, temperature in the container, days until expiration, and other key information. Although the Internet of Things is a great thing, it carries along many security and privacy concerns. Trend Micro, an IT Security Company, breaks down each layer of ... Not only do we have Earth bound telescopes; we have telescopes in the sky that can get even closer to other matter whether that be planets, stars, comets, asteroids, etc. The textbook also notes radial velocity and how the gravitational pull of a planet results in the star wobbling. If the wobble happens to occur along our line of sight to the star, then we see small fluctuations in the star s radial velocity, which can be measured using the Doppler effect (Chaisson McMillan, 2014, p 371) allowing us to estimate the mass of the planet (Chaisson McMillan, 2014, p 371). The Replication Of DNA In Escherichia Coli Introduction Today s issue of Biology: Meselson and Stahl (Vol 4, 1958) includes a groundbreaking development into further understanding of DNA Replication. On pages 671 682 is an article titled The Replication of DNA in Escherichia Coli . Meselson and Stahl conducted an experiment to understand how DNA self replicates by the use of Bacterial transformation to clone parental DNA. In the article, Meselson and Stahl investigate the distribution between the parental and daughter DNA molecules. This is achieved by the use of Radio Isotopic labelling. Uniform Isotopic N15 was grown in E.coli consisting of N14 medium to observe the distribution of N15 DNA macromolecules. Within the article, the authors also discuss the problems they faced during the investigation and how significant Watsons and Cricks Double helix suggests how DNA self replicates. What is DNA? The discovery of the structure of DNA has always been associated with Watson and Crick. Their double helix structure, which they developed in 1983, has been used as a model to understand how DNA self replicates (Karp, 2009). The structure of DNA is made up of covalent bonds between 4 unique nucleotide bases. These bases bind together via complementary base pairing, therefore allowing Adenine to only bind with Thymine, and Cytosine with Guanine (Penn State, Ebery College of Science, 2016).
