Norma Rae and Labor Conflict Essay examples
Norma Rae and Labor Conflict
Labor conflict is strongly portrayed in Norma Rae, especially since in the second half of the 20th
century labor unions were taken for granted as a basic worker s right (even as membership declined).
Norma Rae both emphasizes the power unemployment has over the worker and shows the power that
unions can have in the capitalist system. Companies want to control every aspect of the labor process
because they need to make profits, and the way in which they control the labor process in Norma Rae
(in an attempt to manipulate worker behavior) infringes on basic human rights. Norma Rae, however,
has never behaved, and it is her strength and gumption that bring humanity (and a labor union) to the
O.P. Henley Mill. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unions are the biggest threat to the O.P. Henley factory because they give workers more control over
their pay and working conditions. If a union treats all members as equals, there is less chance for
arguments among workers that might give managers more power over a divided work force. The more
power workers have through their union, the less control the managers have over the labor process
(215). Norma Rae is the O. P. Henley company s worst nightmare. She has never been a silent,
accommodating worker, always complaining for worker privileges and safety, whether it be a Kotex
machine in the restroom or her mother s temporary loss of hearing. A tactic which companies use to
control workers like Norma Rae is bureaucratic control; the company promotes Norma Rae to a less
strenuous, better paying job in order to quiet her down, and by assigning this job, where Norma Rae is
a speed up supervisor, the company actually makes more profits because Norma Rae s position
requires her to generate more work from the other employees (207).
When the threat of unionization among the textile workers seems greatest, the O.P. Henley Mill
manipulates the racial tensions at the mill to create divisions among the workers. Companies use
discrimination and the social concept of race to stimulate and reinforce divisions among workers.
(217) In this case, management threatens to hire more

The Neoliberalism Phase Of Globalization
The Neoliberalism phase of globalization that has been going on from the 1970s until present day took
place after the Imperialism juncture and the Keynesian stage; which lasted from the 1820s through the
1920s and the 1930s through the 1960s, respectively. The stage of globalization that is taking place in
our daily lives now, is mainly to benefit from economies of scale, exploit cheap labor, respond to the
increasingly global competition, benefit from low wages, and take advantage from reduced taxes and
regulations by moving into developing countries where there are cheap subcontractors rather than
manufacturing in developed countries where the cost of production is very high and costly, in other
words they went global to find financial gain. Unlike, the Imperialism and the Keynesian phases
which were mainly to benefit from declining transport costs, gain access to new and foreign markets,
and to compensate for inadequate domestic demand (selling their product in a nation where the
demand for a certain product is higher than the demand in the origin country). Nike, a transnational
corporation located in Oregon; the leading supplier and developer of athletic shoes and apparel goods;
with $27.04 billion USD in sales revenue for 2014 (http://www.forbes.com/companies/nike/) in
contrast to Adidas, which has a sales revenue of $19.24 billion USD in
2014(http://www.forbes.com/companies/adidas/); experienced an explosive growth since the 1970s,

How Tom Wolfe Changed America
Tom Wolfe has a strange to almost creepy approach to the piece, although he does a fantastic job of
explaining the culture shift that occurred between the 18th 20th centaury. When identifying the way
America s have changed their opinions of the sexual acts of hooking up , from the once hatred act of
sleeping in the same bed before marriage to the friendly way of explaining which act was performed
using a baseball diamond. Eventually it transformed to we hooked up but didn t even have sex. Wolfe
tries to present his research in a modern, young kind of fashion, but comes off more of menacing and
egotistic. I believe that Wolfe s argument is that the 2000 s changed the history of America for forever,
in a negative aspect and also a positive way. That in the beginning wealth was accompanied by an
elegant wardrobe and personal chauffeur, through time however with the advancement in technology
and the radical new idea of the internet were introduced people perspective of wealth changed
dramatically. Image seeing a multimillionaire wearing the same brand of jeans or same pair of shoes?

Sweetness and Power Essays
Sweetness and Power Sweetness and Power: The Place of Sugar in Modern History
Some of the most brilliant minds have made many unorthodox suggestions. This is the case with
Sidney Mintz s thesis in Sweetness and Power: The Place of Modern History. Mintz s suggestions that
industrial capitalism originated in the Caribbean sugar plantations may seem to contradict the
European version of world history fed to most of the Western world, but is nevertheless supported by
substantial evidence. In general, Western education has conditioned students to believe that everything
productive originated in Europe.
Mintz begins by explaining the process of obtaining granular sugar from the liquid extracted from the
sugar cane. There was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Similar to factory workers, cheap labor was used for mass production of commodities to meet the
growing demand.
As a result, Mintz completely transformed my ideas on industrial capitalism. As a consumer and lover
of sugar, I have now given a considerable amount of thought to the sugar that I consumed so often.
The extent to which the Caribbean people and land were exploited is unfathomable. When speaking of
a plantation , Americans usually think and refer to the cotton plantations in the South. Even those
Americans with roots in the Caribbean are completely unaware of the exploitation of their land and
people. The long term effects of this exploitation led to the underdevelopment of these Caribbean
countries. These effects are still evident today as most of the Caribbean islands are labeled as Third
World Countries .
In addition, Mintz mentions the separation of the production from consumption. The Major consumers
of sugar were not the hard workers on the plantation, but the far removed citizens of England. The
plantation workers were not able to profit from the fruit of

Garage Door Troubleshooting Techniques
Having a stuck garage door can be so infuriating; it almost makes you feel like driving through it.
Several people find themselves in this situation, especially during winter. Instead of getting frustrated,
use your skills and do some troubleshooting techniques to resolve the issue. First, take a few minutes
to examine the door to see if its safety features are working properly. Sometimes the manufacturer s
safety features may prevent the door from opening. If that doesn t work, perhaps these troubleshooting
tips will. Here are some of the steps you could take before you call in a company offering garage door
repair services: 1. Typically most doors have settings like vacation or automatic lock modes. If the
door is set to this mode, then it will not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Garage Door Repair The automatic garage doors work on simple mechanics. The door uses springs
and mechanical pulleys to operate. So it is not very difficult to understand what is wrong with the
door. While some minor problems can be easily fixed by you, replacement and other major repairs
should not be attempted on a D I Y basis. The main reason is, these doors need to be fixed thoroughly.
Garage doors are very heavy and if they fall they can injure a person very badly. Even if you re a
mechanical expert, it is best if you have it inspected by professionals. There are a few things that you
can do by yourself like greasing the springs and the tractions. You can also occasionally fix the loose
hinges, nuts and screws. When you are repairing the door yourself, always keep the manufacturer s
manual handy and follow the instructions to a T. When replacing the parts always use the original ones

Silent Killer
I decided to discuss about this article because we need to create awareness of the causes and the
prevention of this silent killer. I really liked the manner in which the article is developed, it provides
fabulous and detailed information that allowed the reader to create a clear scenario of what is to have a
heart attack, the causes, the symptoms and the treatment. To speak of health today is not to speak
exclusively of curing illnesses. Talking about health is, above all, in these times, talk about prevention.

Some lifestyle related conditions and decisions increase the likelihood of a person having heart
disease. Some examples are diabetes, overweight and obesity, poor diet, lack of physical activity and
excessive consumption of alcohol. High blood pressure, low density lipoprotein (BAD) cholesterol,
and smoking are key risk factors for heart disease. LBD is considered to be bad cholesterol because
having high levels can lead to accumulation in the arteries, which can cause heart disease and stroke.
If you lower your blood pressure and cholesterol, and if you do not smoke, you will reduce your
chances of having heart disease. Now, in case of emergency, angioplasty which is the best treatment

This ailment plays a crucial role affecting the seven dimensions of wellness. Emotional health is a new
form of health that our society has recently discovered. This form of health can be defined as the state
of emotional and psychological well being in which an individual is able to use his or her cognitive
and emotional capabilities, function in society, and meet the ordinary demands of everyday life .
Studies have proven that if an individual implements a healthy dietary, exercises regularly, and drink a
moderate use of alcohol, and does not use tobacco, it s clear the individual is less likely to be
depressed and suffer from poor health. When an individual is in a good emotional state they are able
to think and be aware of their feelings and behavior toward themselves and others. They are also able
to cope with stress and problems, which is inevitable in life. When an individual is depressed often
times they endure a sense of sadness, feeling empty, hopeless or even numb. An individual s suffering
with depression have thoughts of suicide, overthink specific situations, have anxiety which makes it
hard for them to relax, and irritable. Some of these individuals rely and resort to drugs and alcohol to
cope with their feelings. Overall, they have a difficult time making decisions. Certain situations are

Low-speed Circulating Wind Tunnels Essay
Introduction When a viscous fluid flows along a fixed impermeable wall, or past the rigid surface of
an immersed body, an essential condition is that a velocity at any point on the wall or other fixed
surface is zero. To the extent to which the condition modifies the general character of the flow is
dependent on the viscosity of the fluid. If a body has a streamlined shape and the fluid flowing over
the body has a small viscosity that is not negligible, the modifying effect appears to be confined to the
narrowest regions adjacent to the solid surfaces; these are called boundary layers. Within these layers,
there is a rapid change in velocity which gives rise to a large velocity gradient normal to the boundary
which produces a shear stress ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the medium air speed wind tunnels where wind speed ranges from 1.5 40m/s, several types of wind
tunnels can be applied. At first, an open suction type wind tunnel can have a large test section with
high contraction ratio [3]. This type of wind tunnel has a large inlet area to take motionless air to the
test section. Air filters can be installed before the inlet to prevent any dust from entering the test
section and disturbing the air flow [3]. It also provides a pressure drop to generate uniform flow at the
inlet. A honeycomb shaped panel and several sheets of screens are installed in the settling chamber of
the wind tunnel. The contraction section makes the air flow more uniform and stable. A diffuser is
placed downstream of the test section to prevent an adverse pressure gradient. This is done by
increasing the cross sectional area along the main flow direction [3]. When the open suction type wind
tunnel is used for calibration purposes, air in front of the inlet section should be as dormant as possible
[3].A baffle or a restraint can be installed at the inlet section to prevent any flow disturbances at the
inlet of the wind tunnel [3]. However, if there are any fluctuations in the air at the inlet, a closed type
wind tunnel can prevent this. In a closed type wind tunnel, air is

The Value Of Individualism In Anthem By Ayn Rand
Anthem was written by Ayn Rand, and she was born on February 2, 1905 in Russia. Russia at the time
was heavily focused on collectivism, which is the idea that people should prioritize the good of society
over the welfare of the individual, and was highly influential on Rand s life. When she was introduced
to American history, her ideas of what a free nation should be was America. When she left Russia, she
decided to never go back to Russia and 13 years later, wrote Anthem. Anthem is set in the future and is
based in a city that has collapsed from modern day society and accepts collectivism. Anthem is a
novella about a man named Equality 7 2521 and throughout his life, he struggles to find self
identification in a society that has no sense of individualism. Throughout the story of Anthem the main
themes are the importance of the individual and the value of martyrdom. Ayn Rand wrote Anthem as a
warning to us westerners about the horrors of collectivism regardless of how it was put in use. She
experienced most of the horrors first hand and this was also another reason for writing Anthem . Some
of the horrors of what she experienced was the Kerensky Revolution and the Bolshevik Revolution
which ended in her father s pharmacy being confiscated and leading to periods of near starvation. So,
based on Rand s past experiences and her ideas, she wrote Anthem .
Anthem is about a boy named Equality 7 2521 who is Street Sweeper of the society and was given this
job as punishment for having too bright a mind, too curious, and for fighting amongst his brothers.
When he was given this job, he thought of it as an atonement to his sins for being these things. While
sweeping the streets, he finds a grill buried in the ground, leading to a underground subway and
sneaks down there every day to perform experiments to satisfy his curiosity and his willing to learn.
Equality then finds a young woman named Liberty 5 3000 and has thoughts that no man or woman
can have except at the Time of Mating. After completing many experiments, Equality discovers
electricity and uses it to make a light. When he showed it to the Council of Scholars, he was

that the peninsula of Kowloon also became a part of the Crown colony. In 1898 the

Many argue that this astonishing achievement is due to Hong Kong s laissez faire approach to

Would the closer ties to the Chinese communist party have a bad influence on Hong Kong s laissez

Greed And Regret In W. Jacobs The Monkey s Paw
W. W. Jacobs The Monkey s Paw contains many themes throughout its story; Greed and Regret being
the most critical and strong, the author writes about these polarising themes to connect many others.
You will notice that the characters Mr White , Herbert White and Major Morris are the best characters
to show the theme of Greed as I will explain. The author begins with telling about a game of chess
with Mr White and his son, a game within which he possesses ideas involving radical change ; Mr
White plays in a cocky way by putting his king into such sharp and unnecessary perils , and notices
his evident defeat. By Mr White underestimating and disrespecting his young son, he shows his greed
at play on the table of chess. When Major Morris enters the scene, the conversation in the room shifts

Major Morris, at first hesitant to speak about the matter, is broken by his greed to entertain the White
family and tells them about his experience with the Monkey s Paw . Major Morris later casts the
Monkey s Paw into the fire hoping to protect from its evils, but Mr White does not realise the true
results of the wishes and takes the paw for himself. I find out later about what grievances the Monkey
s Paw brings to the family thus being the result of Major Morris greed. In the case of Herbert White,
he shows his greed through winning his way to being the man of the house instead of his dad. When
he asks his father to wish for being an emperor so he can t be henpecked or when he asks If you only
cleared the house, you d be quite happy, wouldn t you? Herbert is attacking his father s weak points,
showing a sign of greed for status in the house and above his father. Concluding, W. W. Jacobs has the
theme of Greed written in this short story similar to the roots of a tree, bringing all other themes into
fruition. Herbert is transitioned into the theme of Family , Mr White experiences the theme of Failure
and Major Morris meets Regret in The Monkey s

As we want to achieve the goals to build healthcare organization with productively and economically,

to change the old behaviour of some people. This is because it has become habit to them. Changing
the people behaviour and introduce the new practice will cause a conflict between follower and leader.
Donahue explained that in order to handle the conflict and ask the follower to stop the bad habit, the
leader should speak the truth but do it in a gracious, even tone, seeking to understand the other person

there is a spectrum of bullshit, and that pseudo profound bullshit is an extreme point (p.550) on this
spectrum; it is described as vague and ambiguous. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Deepak Chopra s tweets were used as bullshit statements throughout the studies, and it was found that
knowledge of who he is and his tweets are not a confounding factor. Participants were asked to state
the profundity of statements provided to them, and would then answer tests on verbal intelligence,
heuristics, religious beliefs, cognitive reflections, ontological beliefs, paranormal beliefs, numeracy,
and analytical cognition (tests vary between studies). In studies 1 and 2, Pennycook et al. (2015) found
that participants often failed to detect bullshit statements and found correlations with related variables,
but were unable to tell what the associations were driven by. In study 3 they found that response bias
plays a role in receptivity of bullshit and may explain its association with analytic thinking. Study 4
results support the idea that the difference between profundity ratings for pseudo profound bullshit
and motivational quotes can be used to measure bullshit sensitivity (p.552 558). When the results of
all four studies are looked at as a whole, Pennycook et al. (2015) prove that when vague, meaningless
statements are rated as significant, it is can be considered a psychological phenomenon that is related
to variables of theoretical interest (p.559). They suggest that individuals that are more receptive to

Pop Culture Essay
Habitual Americans
From the newest music video to the latest Buzzfeed s Tasty recipe, Americans express themselves
through pop culture. What music someone listens to, who they follow on Instagram, what tweet they
retweet on Twitter: all reflects who someone is. Americans reflect themselves through pop culture
contrary to belief that pop culture creates Americans.
Barbie s and Legos: two of the most popular children s toys throughout the decades These toys are
always being remade in a new way and sold through advertising. The newest Legos are always made
to correspond with a movie coming to theaters near you. These toys are why pop culture creates
Americans as a society. Americans buy what they see on television, these products then become
popular , and eventually are owned in every household. Snuggies were once popular, they were
advertised during every commercial break, leaving everyone to feel like they needed one. If these had
not been advertised as much as they were, they would not have been popular. Although Americans buy
what they see as popular, it does not create who they are, only reflects what is popular at the moment.
Of course, someone is going to go buy, the newest invention or go see the newest action movie in
theater. The product interests the consumer into looking into it more.
If someone is partially awake at 3 am, they will turn on the shopping channel, where things you
thought had never been invented are sold. People are curious on what is out there.

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is a Safe Treatment for...
A. Thesis Statement
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a treatment for severe mental illness in which the brain is
stimulated with a strong electrical current which induces a seizure. The seizure rearranges the brain s
neurochemistry and results in an elevation of mood. This essay asks: Is ECT any safer and more
effective in treating mood disorders than drug therapies? This treatment has a controversial history
ever since it was first introduced in 1938. I intend to argue that electroconvulsive therapy is indeed a
safe treatment of mental disorders when other treatments have failed. Due to the development of safer
and less traumatic ways of administering ECT, the treatment has made a comeback, is greatly used,
and proves to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
C. Central Issue
Since its beginning, the issue of the safety and efficacy of ECT has existed, and thus its use has been
always remained controversial (Weiner Krystal, 1994). Even with the modern development of ECT,
some of the same issues are still prevalent. There are two sides here: the advocates that support the use
of the treatment, and those who do not. This is explored next.
The first argument for the use of ECT is the fact that majority of studies and modern literature show
that this treatment is very successful in treating many psychological disorders. Evidence seems
strongest for the efficacy in severely depressed patients, as well as manic patients (Reisner, 2003).
When looking at those with major depression, the likelihood of substantial improvement ranges from
80 90% (Weiner Krystal, 1994). In manic patients, Gabbard concludes that 80% of patients show
marked improvement (2001, p.1272).
The second argument for the use of ECT is that successful treatments induce remission in episodes of
illness (Gabbard, 2001). The evidence supporting this conclusion is compelling and includes a sizable
number of well controlled sham ECT studies. In these studies, patients were randomized to receive
real ECT or sham ECT (which involves anaesthesia but no electrical stimulation), thus providing for
precise double blind tests of efficacy (Gabbard, 2001). One misconception is that it provides a cure .
This is not the case it does not produce a cure any

Mergers And Acquisitions ( M S Essay
Mergers and Acquisitions (M A) is a term referring to the consolidation of companies or assets. A
merger is a combination of two companies forming to become a new company, and an acquisition is
the purchase of one company by another in which no new company is formed (investopedia.com). The
term M A also refers to the department of financial institutions that deal with mergers and acquisitions.
Every merger and acquisition has its own reasons based on organizational goals.
Mergers can help with entering emerging markets, cutting costs, and gaining competitive advantages.
There is increased pressure for publicly traded companies to raise their earnings. If it cannot be done
inside the company, they might seek to acquire companies to boost earnings. Additionally, the internet
and technology advancements have brought about off shoring of white collar jobs and made merging
with competitors easier.
There are four stages organizations undergo when a merger is decided. The first stage of a merger and
acquisition is the pre deal or pre merger and acquisition; it includes finding compatible business
ventures and partners to assess potential targets and develops a plan for execution (HR Focus, 2005).
Organizations planning to go through a merger or acquisition must consider the legal implications
including equal employment opportunities. HR must examine the policies of both companies and
ensure employees are properly trained. Training should include harassment, disability, and

American Society And Ugandan Society
I stepped off the plane and the smell of burning trash immediately flooded my nostrils. The pungent
smell permeated the air. Driving in the absence of lane lines, crosswalks, or any sense of organization
made the eleven hour bus ride from the airport to my final destination all the more calamitous and
fearsome. However, the most shocking of all in this initial experience of a new culture, was seeing
vast amounts abandoned children. The biggest contrast between American society and Ugandan
society is the difference in the value of children. In America, parents generally highly value their
children and are willing to make sacrifices them. For children in Uganda, the story is quite different;
they are exploited, abused, and viewed as burdens. The adverse effects of military occupation in
Uganda can be traced back to the beginning of colonization. European countries like Britain, Belgium,
and France all rushed into Africa at the end of the 19th Century trying to get their slice of Africa.
Some nations were worse than others, but the two common themes that tied African imperialism
together were racism and exploitation. For decades, the Ugandan people were under rulers that
exploited them and treated them as if they could not be trusted in society. The torn society of Uganda
has been affected by years, even decades, of war and militarized occupation. They face a corrupt
government, broken economy, and execrable poverty. Military occupation of land is a powerful tool

End Stage Renal Disease ( Esrd )
End stage renal disease (ESRD) occurs when the kidneys lose its function to eliminate waste and
excess water from the body (NLM, 2014). A total of 661,648 cases of ESRD was reported in 2013, of
which 117,162 were new cases (United States Renal Data System, 2015). 88.2% of individuals of the
newly reported cases with ESRD started renal replacement therapy with hemodialysis, 9% chose
peritoneal dialysis, and 2.6% received a kidney transplant. Dialysis is recommended to remove
excessive salt, water, and waste products from the body, when kidney function reaches 15% (NLM,
2014). Additionally, dialysis helps control blood pressure as well as aid the kidneys in producing red
blood cells. Common complications of dialysis are: anemia, high blood pressure, myocardial
infarction, heart failure, hyperkalemia, increased risk of infections, malnutrition, stroke, seizures,
edema, and weakening of the bones. Due to the many complications associated with ESRD
physiological needs takes precedence over psychological needs within in center hemodialysis.
Healthcare providers in the hemodialysis center fail to recognize the importance of the impact

New-Hire Onboarding and Information Security Essay
New employees, full time or non employee contractors, present a number of risks in regards to
information security. These risks can be mitigated with well designed and thorough interview and
onboarding processes. An organization s human resources department must have guidelines in place
for interviewers and hiring managers to follow to allow for high risk potential candidates to be filtered
out prior to hiring. The importance of information security as part of the hiring process is so
important; the PCI Security Council has implemented a section in hits reference guide to maintain PCI
compliance. PCI DSS Section 12.7 states, Screen employees prior to hire to minimize the risk of

Employees and non employee contract workers must all be vetted to ensure they do not pose threats to
the organization s physical and information assets. It is up to the organization to determine what levels
of access or levels of restriction should be in place on employees and contractors post hire. These
levels should be identified prior to the hiring process to drive how thorough the candidate screening
should be. The amount of background checks and reference checks for a waiter at a restaurant may not
be as thorough as those of a candidate for a network engineering role in the restaurant s corporate
headquarters IT department. Once a position s scope of work and access has been determined, the job
must be posted to receive responses from interested candidates. It is important for the posting to avoid
revealing access privileges to prospective employees when it advertises open positions (Whitman
Mattord, 2011, p494). The job description must contain specifics about the job and its duties while not
divulging too much detail that may open a part of the organization to risk by providing sensitive
details. Interviews are used as a tool to identify a candidate to hire, usually based on a field of
potential candidates resumes. The interview is a good resource for the hiring manager and human
resources to talk with candidates one on one to verify if the candidate actually matches some of the

The Effect Of Personality On Teacher Leadership
The Effect of Personality on Teacher Leadership
Mariana Quezada, Harmony Rain, Joshua Neely, Stevie Lang, and Morgan Copas
Flagler College
Methods This study looks at the effect personality has on teacher leadership. In this study, the
independent variable is based off of the Big Five Inventory (BFI), and is a person s T score in each of
the Big Five personality traits. The dependent variable would be the scores in each of the seven
domains on the Teacher Leadership Inventory (TLI). An Analysis of Variability (ANOVA) will be
used to determine if there is a relationship between personality and teacher leadership.
In previous research by Aydin, Balvi, and Alci (2013), it was shown that neuroticism has negative
effects on all teaching competencies examined, and extroversion is significantly and positively
correlated to teaching competency, so this study will look at the effects of extroversion and
neuroticism on teacher leadership. In this study, it is predicted that there will be a relationship between
personality and leadership, and while Extroversion will have a positive correlation with the seven
teacher leadership domains, neuroticism will have a negative correlation with the seven teacher
leadership domains.
Participants
Participants of the study were from a sample of Flagler students, all of which were members of the
education department, and were selected on a voluntary basis. Compensation received by the students

Removal of Indian Tribes in 1700
No, I do not agree that Georgia and the United States were justified in forcing the Indian tribes to
leave their homeland and move to the Oklahoma territory. I believe the Tribes were taken advantage of
and abused by the states whenever possible.
In 1971 the Cherokee tribe was in the process of making treaties with United States. The state of
Georgia recognized the Cherokee tribe as a nation allowing them to make their own laws and follow
their native customs. In the late 1700 s their land started to be invaded by the white man. The
Cherokee Indians began to move to Arkansas. (Historical Context) I believe the Indians were taken

During that time frame additional treaties (Treaty of Grouseland and Treaty of Vincennes) were

Item Number Exemplified Learning Analysis
The way I determined whether each item number exemplified learning, was by using my definition of
what learning means and what I have been taught it means through this chapter. My definition of
learning is the acquired knowledge or skills one has obtained by being taught, through experience,
and/or by studying. I came up with item numbers 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, and 10 as being examples of learning. I
would say 1, 4, 6, and 7 are not examples of learning. Considering the definition of learning by
Hilgard and Bower, I wouldn t change any of my answers. Here are the reasonings for each number

Career And Technical Education For College And Career...
TNTP is ensuring that students have access to college and career pathways that prepare them for
postsecondary success and life. THE CONTEXT. Career and Technical Education rigorous and
relevant coursework that prepares students for a wide range of high wage, high skill, high demand
careers involves much more than offering courses that is aligned to postsecondary pathways. CTE
provides students with an opportunity to develop specific academic, intellectual, technical, and 21st
century skills necessary to be successful in careers and in life. Done well, students are offered a series
of intentionally sequenced, high quality CTE courses coupled with rigorous college ready coursework,
expanding access to postsecondary options that include both college and career. But that potential will
remain unrealized if we neglect attention to the fact that CTE is often considered separate and not
equal to the standard college readiness track of coursework. As a non profit with nearly two decades
of experience supporting schools and systems, we know that industry driven programs of study,
rigorous curricula, integration of work based learning, career and technical student organizations,
early postsecondary opportunities and industry certification are key to the successful implementation
of quality CTE programming. Additionally, given that teachers often transition directly from industry
to the classroom in many CTE clusters, quality training and professional development for CTE
educators

Freedom In Albert Camus s The Myth Of Sisyphus
Freedom
People follow same standard steps from birth till the end. We go to kindergarten then to
school. Later we enter university and live with the desire of to find a good job and to make a
better life. Do we do these things, because we really want it? In fact, this is just expectations of
society that most people think they should follow. Albert Camus, philosopher and writer, claims
that with living almost the same lives with others and with following the society we just repress
ourselves. In his essay The Myth of Sisyphus , he acknowledges that person can be free with
accepting the Absurd. People who follow the expectations of society repress their freedom,
because they are not aware that they are ruled by society. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the absurd man is determined to reject all of these
expectations on him. The only freedom the absurd man can know is the freedom he experiences:
the freedom to think and to act as he chooses. By abandoning the idea that he has some role to
fulfill, the absurd man attains the freedom of taking each moment of life as it strikes him, free of
preconceptions or prejudices.
The Guest of the Albert Camus, follows the story of Daru. He is a schoolteacher who lives
on a remote plateau. We see from the beginning of the story that Daru lives alone but he does not
feel lonely. He is even grateful for his solitude and for living in the cruel desert. One day Daru
watches two men approach his schoolhouse. One of the men was Balducci, a friend of Daru and
he leads an Arab prisoner who has been accused of murdering his cousin. Balducci has been
ordered to bring the Arab to Daru, and then return immediately to his post. Likewise, Daru has
orders to turn in the prisoner to police headquarters. Daru refuses this task, considering it
dishonorable, because he does not know that he is guilty or not. Balducci agrees with the
schoolmaster, but insists that in war men must be prepared to do many different jobs.

Similar to the majority of living organisms, bacteria are able to adapt and change depending on their
environment. Contrary to other larger living organisms such as humans, bacteria are able to transform

medications that are commonly used to treat them such as antibiotics. These altered bacteria are
oftentimes referred to as super bugs as they are unaffected by typical treatments involving the use of

The Shepherrd Center, a rehabilitation center in Atlanta, Georgia, takes into consideration that by

cross contamination and the passing infections either by direct or indirect contact are at an all time
high. As a result of this increased risk of spreading the MRSA infection, the Shepherrd Center
implemented a way to identify MRSA within their specific patient population before they are
admitted. They proposed that as individuals come in, each one is given nasal swabs while their
medical histories and current evaluations are taken. This initial assessment allows for the healthcare
staff to be better prepared for the possible infections that each patient may carry into their treatment
facility. Since executing this practice, the Shepherred Center has seen a 43% reduction in healthcare
acquired MRSA rates (Testing for MRSA, 2013). The Shepherred Center is able to continue with this

  • 2. Norma Rae and Labor Conflict Essay examples Norma Rae and Labor Conflict Labor conflict is strongly portrayed in Norma Rae, especially since in the second half of the 20th century labor unions were taken for granted as a basic worker s right (even as membership declined). Norma Rae both emphasizes the power unemployment has over the worker and shows the power that unions can have in the capitalist system. Companies want to control every aspect of the labor process because they need to make profits, and the way in which they control the labor process in Norma Rae (in an attempt to manipulate worker behavior) infringes on basic human rights. Norma Rae, however, has never behaved, and it is her strength and gumption that bring humanity (and a labor union) to the O.P. Henley Mill. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unions are the biggest threat to the O.P. Henley factory because they give workers more control over their pay and working conditions. If a union treats all members as equals, there is less chance for arguments among workers that might give managers more power over a divided work force. The more power workers have through their union, the less control the managers have over the labor process (215). Norma Rae is the O. P. Henley company s worst nightmare. She has never been a silent, accommodating worker, always complaining for worker privileges and safety, whether it be a Kotex machine in the restroom or her mother s temporary loss of hearing. A tactic which companies use to control workers like Norma Rae is bureaucratic control; the company promotes Norma Rae to a less strenuous, better paying job in order to quiet her down, and by assigning this job, where Norma Rae is a speed up supervisor, the company actually makes more profits because Norma Rae s position requires her to generate more work from the other employees (207). When the threat of unionization among the textile workers seems greatest, the O.P. Henley Mill manipulates the racial tensions at the mill to create divisions among the workers. Companies use discrimination and the social concept of race to stimulate and reinforce divisions among workers. (217) In this case, management threatens to hire more ... • 3. The Neoliberalism Phase Of Globalization The Neoliberalism phase of globalization that has been going on from the 1970s until present day took place after the Imperialism juncture and the Keynesian stage; which lasted from the 1820s through the 1920s and the 1930s through the 1960s, respectively. The stage of globalization that is taking place in our daily lives now, is mainly to benefit from economies of scale, exploit cheap labor, respond to the increasingly global competition, benefit from low wages, and take advantage from reduced taxes and regulations by moving into developing countries where there are cheap subcontractors rather than manufacturing in developed countries where the cost of production is very high and costly, in other words they went global to find financial gain. Unlike, the Imperialism and the Keynesian phases which were mainly to benefit from declining transport costs, gain access to new and foreign markets, and to compensate for inadequate domestic demand (selling their product in a nation where the demand for a certain product is higher than the demand in the origin country). Nike, a transnational corporation located in Oregon; the leading supplier and developer of athletic shoes and apparel goods; with $27.04 billion USD in sales revenue for 2014 (http://www.forbes.com/companies/nike/) in contrast to Adidas, which has a sales revenue of $19.24 billion USD in 2014(http://www.forbes.com/companies/adidas/); experienced an explosive growth since the 1970s, the industry has globalized widely ... • 4. How Tom Wolfe Changed America Tom Wolfe has a strange to almost creepy approach to the piece, although he does a fantastic job of explaining the culture shift that occurred between the 18th 20th centaury. When identifying the way America s have changed their opinions of the sexual acts of hooking up , from the once hatred act of sleeping in the same bed before marriage to the friendly way of explaining which act was performed using a baseball diamond. Eventually it transformed to we hooked up but didn t even have sex. Wolfe tries to present his research in a modern, young kind of fashion, but comes off more of menacing and egotistic. I believe that Wolfe s argument is that the 2000 s changed the history of America for forever, in a negative aspect and also a positive way. That in the beginning wealth was accompanied by an elegant wardrobe and personal chauffeur, through time however with the advancement in technology and the radical new idea of the internet were introduced people perspective of wealth changed dramatically. The first is In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, old people in America had prayed Please, God, don t let me look poor . In the year 2000, they prayed Please, God, don t let me look Old . I can remember my parents laughing at how people used to worry about how they appeared economically while in recent times many are more worried about the appearance of being old. This is the case with Sidney Mintz s thesis in Sweetness and Power: The Place of Modern History. Mintz s suggestions that industrial capitalism originated in the Caribbean sugar plantations may seem to contradict the European version of world history fed to most of the Western world, but is nevertheless supported by substantial evidence. In general, Western education has conditioned students to believe that everything productive originated in Europe. Mintz begins by explaining the process of obtaining granular sugar from the liquid extracted from the sugar cane. There was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Similar to factory workers, cheap labor was used for mass production of commodities to meet the growing demand. As a result, Mintz completely transformed my ideas on industrial capitalism. As a consumer and lover of sugar, I have now given a considerable amount of thought to the sugar that I consumed so often. The extent to which the Caribbean people and land were exploited is unfathomable. When speaking of a plantation , Americans usually think and refer to the cotton plantations in the South. Even those Americans with roots in the Caribbean are completely unaware of the exploitation of their land and people. The long term effects of this exploitation led to the underdevelopment of these Caribbean countries. These effects are still evident today as most of the Caribbean islands are labeled as Third World Countries . In addition, Mintz mentions the separation of the production from consumption. The Major consumers of sugar were not the hard workers on the plantation, but the far removed citizens of England. The plantation workers were not able to profit from the fruit of ... Several people find themselves in this situation, especially during winter. Instead of getting frustrated, use your skills and do some troubleshooting techniques to resolve the issue. First, take a few minutes to examine the door to see if its safety features are working properly. Sometimes the manufacturer s safety features may prevent the door from opening. If that doesn t work, perhaps these troubleshooting tips will. Here are some of the steps you could take before you call in a company offering garage door repair services: 1. Check the automatic sensors to see if the light is on. If the light on the sensor is not blinking, it would need replacement. Also nothing should be obstructing the sensors and their path. Trust the Experts on Garage Door Repair The automatic garage doors work on simple mechanics. The door uses springs and mechanical pulleys to operate. So it is not very difficult to understand what is wrong with the door. While some minor problems can be easily fixed by you, replacement and other major repairs should not be attempted on a D I Y basis. The main reason is, these doors need to be fixed thoroughly. Garage doors are very heavy and if they fall they can injure a person very badly. Even if you re a mechanical expert, it is best if you have it inspected by professionals. There are a few things that you can do by yourself like greasing the springs and the tractions. You can also occasionally fix the loose hinges, nuts and screws. I really liked the manner in which the article is developed, it provides fabulous and detailed information that allowed the reader to create a clear scenario of what is to have a heart attack, the causes, the symptoms and the treatment. To speak of health today is not to speak exclusively of curing illnesses. Talking about health is, above all, in these times, talk about prevention. Some examples are diabetes, overweight and obesity, poor diet, lack of physical activity and excessive consumption of alcohol. If a body has a streamlined shape and the fluid flowing over the body has a small viscosity that is not negligible, the modifying effect appears to be confined to the narrowest regions adjacent to the solid surfaces; these are called boundary layers. Within these layers, there is a rapid change in velocity which gives rise to a large velocity gradient normal to the boundary which produces a shear stress ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the medium air speed wind tunnels where wind speed ranges from 1.5 40m/s, several types of wind tunnels can be applied. At first, an open suction type wind tunnel can have a large test section with high contraction ratio [3]. This type of wind tunnel has a large inlet area to take motionless air to the test section. Air filters can be installed before the inlet to prevent any dust from entering the test section and disturbing the air flow [3]. It also provides a pressure drop to generate uniform flow at the inlet. A honeycomb shaped panel and several sheets of screens are installed in the settling chamber of the wind tunnel. The contraction section makes the air flow more uniform and stable. A diffuser is placed downstream of the test section to prevent an adverse pressure gradient. This is done by increasing the cross sectional area along the main flow direction [3]. When the open suction type wind tunnel is used for calibration purposes, air in front of the inlet section should be as dormant as possible [3].A baffle or a restraint can be installed at the inlet section to prevent any flow disturbances at the inlet of the wind tunnel [3]. However, if there are any fluctuations in the air at the inlet, a closed type wind tunnel can prevent this. In a closed type wind tunnel, air is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Value Of Individualism In Anthem By Ayn Rand Anthem was written by Ayn Rand, and she was born on February 2, 1905 in Russia. Russia at the time was heavily focused on collectivism, which is the idea that people should prioritize the good of society over the welfare of the individual, and was highly influential on Rand s life. When she was introduced to American history, her ideas of what a free nation should be was America. When she left Russia, she decided to never go back to Russia and 13 years later, wrote Anthem. Anthem is set in the future and is based in a city that has collapsed from modern day society and accepts collectivism. Anthem is a novella about a man named Equality 7 2521 and throughout his life, he struggles to find self identification in a society that has no sense of individualism. Throughout the story of Anthem the main themes are the importance of the individual and the value of martyrdom. Ayn Rand wrote Anthem as a warning to us westerners about the horrors of collectivism regardless of how it was put in use. She experienced most of the horrors first hand and this was also another reason for writing Anthem . Some of the horrors of what she experienced was the Kerensky Revolution and the Bolshevik Revolution which ended in her father s pharmacy being confiscated and leading to periods of near starvation. So, based on Rand s past experiences and her ideas, she wrote Anthem . Anthem is about a boy named Equality 7 2521 who is Street Sweeper of the society and was given this job as punishment for having too bright a mind, too curious, and for fighting amongst his brothers. When he was given this job, he thought of it as an atonement to his sins for being these things. While sweeping the streets, he finds a grill buried in the ground, leading to a underground subway and sneaks down there every day to perform experiments to satisfy his curiosity and his willing to learn. Equality then finds a young woman named Liberty 5 3000 and has thoughts that no man or woman can have except at the Time of Mating. Many argue that this astonishing achievement is due to Hong Kong s laissez faire approach to economic policies with low taxes, low customs duties, free trade, free capital movements and a fairly liberal immigration policy. Many wondered how Hong Kong could ever be able to be ruled by China again, a country with a considered completely different approach to economic policies. You will notice that the characters Mr White , Herbert White and Major Morris are the best characters to show the theme of Greed as I will explain. The author begins with telling about a game of chess with Mr White and his son, a game within which he possesses ideas involving radical change ; Mr White plays in a cocky way by putting his king into such sharp and unnecessary perils , and notices his evident defeat. By Mr White underestimating and disrespecting his young son, he shows his greed at play on the table of chess. When Major Morris enters the scene, the conversation in the room shifts to his ... I find out later about what grievances the Monkey s Paw brings to the family thus being the result of Major Morris greed. In the case of Herbert White, he shows his greed through winning his way to being the man of the house instead of his dad. When he asks his father to wish for being an emperor so he can t be henpecked or when he asks If you only cleared the house, you d be quite happy, wouldn t you? Herbert is attacking his father s weak points, showing a sign of greed for status in the house and above his father. Concluding, W. W. Thesis Statement Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a treatment for severe mental illness in which the brain is stimulated with a strong electrical current which induces a seizure. The seizure rearranges the brain s neurochemistry and results in an elevation of mood. This essay asks: Is ECT any safer and more effective in treating mood disorders than drug therapies? This treatment has a controversial history ever since it was first introduced in 1938. Central Issue Since its beginning, the issue of the safety and efficacy of ECT has existed, and thus its use has been always remained controversial (Weiner Krystal, 1994). Even with the modern development of ECT, some of the same issues are still prevalent. There are two sides here: the advocates that support the use of the treatment, and those who do not. This is explored next. The first argument for the use of ECT is the fact that majority of studies and modern literature show that this treatment is very successful in treating many psychological disorders. Evidence seems strongest for the efficacy in severely depressed patients, as well as manic patients (Reisner, 2003). When looking at those with major depression, the likelihood of substantial improvement ranges from 80 90% (Weiner Krystal, 1994). In manic patients, Gabbard concludes that 80% of patients show marked improvement (2001, p.1272). The second argument for the use of ECT is that successful treatments induce remission in episodes of illness (Gabbard, 2001). The evidence supporting this conclusion is compelling and includes a sizable number of well controlled sham ECT studies. In these studies, patients were randomized to receive real ECT or sham ECT (which involves anaesthesia but no electrical stimulation), thus providing for precise double blind tests of efficacy (Gabbard, 2001). Driving in the absence of lane lines, crosswalks, or any sense of organization made the eleven hour bus ride from the airport to my final destination all the more calamitous and fearsome. However, the most shocking of all in this initial experience of a new culture, was seeing vast amounts abandoned children. The biggest contrast between American society and Ugandan society is the difference in the value of children. In America, parents generally highly value their children and are willing to make sacrifices them. For children in Uganda, the story is quite different; they are exploited, abused, and viewed as burdens. The adverse effects of military occupation in Uganda can be traced back to the beginning of colonization. European countries like Britain, Belgium, and France all rushed into Africa at the end of the 19th Century trying to get their slice of Africa. Some nations were worse than others, but the two common themes that tied African imperialism together were racism and exploitation. For decades, the Ugandan people were under rulers that exploited them and treated them as if they could not be trusted in society. In previous research by Aydin, Balvi, and Alci (2013), it was shown that neuroticism has negative effects on all teaching competencies examined, and extroversion is significantly and positively correlated to teaching competency, so this study will look at the effects of extroversion and neuroticism on teacher leadership. In this study, it is predicted that there will be a relationship between personality and leadership, and while Extroversion will have a positive correlation with the seven teacher leadership domains, neuroticism will have a negative correlation with the seven teacher leadership domains. Participants Participants of the study were from a sample of Flagler students, all of which were members of the education department, and were selected on a voluntary basis. Compensation received by the students was extra credit. The mean age of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Removal of Indian Tribes in 1700 No, I do not agree that Georgia and the United States were justified in forcing the Indian tribes to leave their homeland and move to the Oklahoma territory. I believe the Tribes were taken advantage of and abused by the states whenever possible. In 1971 the Cherokee tribe was in the process of making treaties with United States. The state of Georgia recognized the Cherokee tribe as a nation allowing them to make their own laws and follow their native customs. In the late 1700 s their land started to be invaded by the white man. The Cherokee Indians began to move to Arkansas. (Historical Context) I believe the Indians were taken advantage of and had no option but to move when their land was taken away from them. Georgia and the United ... (DBQ Doc 2) That being said the judgment against Worcester was reversed. In 1810 the confrontation between Tecumseh and William Harrison at Vincennes, Indiana leads to more lose of land for the Tribes. The signing of the Treaty of Greenville, which took more of the Indians land from them was intended to make things work easer for Tribal members and settlers. During that time frame additional treaties (Treaty of Grouseland and Treaty of Vincennes) were signed. More land was given to Americans but still resulted in an easing of tension by allowing the settlers into Indiana and appeasing the Indians with reimbursement for the lands the settlers were squatting on .(DBQ Doc 3) Statements by Chief Tecumseh leads to further verification that the Indians felt wronged in the swapping of their land. Tecumseh states we gave them forest clad mountains and valleys full of game, and in return what did they give our warriors and our women? Rum, trinkets and a grave. (DBQ Doc 4) Based on the maps presented there is further proof that the Cherokee Tribe was losing more and more land to United States. • 33. Item Number Exemplified Learning Analysis The way I determined whether each item number exemplified learning, was by using my definition of what learning means and what I have been taught it means through this chapter. My definition of learning is the acquired knowledge or skills one has obtained by being taught, through experience, and/or by studying. I came up with item numbers 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, and 10 as being examples of learning. I would say 1, 4, 6, and 7 are not examples of learning. Considering the definition of learning by Hilgard and Bower, I wouldn t change any of my answers. Here are the reasonings for each number below: 1. • 34. Career And Technical Education For College And Career... TNTP is ensuring that students have access to college and career pathways that prepare them for postsecondary success and life. THE CONTEXT. Career and Technical Education rigorous and relevant coursework that prepares students for a wide range of high wage, high skill, high demand careers involves much more than offering courses that is aligned to postsecondary pathways. CTE provides students with an opportunity to develop specific academic, intellectual, technical, and 21st century skills necessary to be successful in careers and in life. Done well, students are offered a series of intentionally sequenced, high quality CTE courses coupled with rigorous college ready coursework, expanding access to postsecondary options that include both college and career. But that potential will remain unrealized if we neglect attention to the fact that CTE is often considered separate and not equal to the standard college readiness track of coursework. As a non profit with nearly two decades of experience supporting schools and systems, we know that industry driven programs of study, rigorous curricula, integration of work based learning, career and technical student organizations, early postsecondary opportunities and industry certification are key to the successful implementation of quality CTE programming. Additionally, given that teachers often transition directly from industry to the classroom in many CTE clusters, quality training and professional development for CTE educators ... • 37. Methicillin Resistant Enterococci Similar to the majority of living organisms, bacteria are able to adapt and change depending on their environment. Contrary to other larger living organisms such as humans, bacteria are able to transform and multiply at a more rapid pace, allowing these microorganisms to evolve and become resistant to medications that are commonly used to treat them such as antibiotics. These altered bacteria are oftentimes referred to as super bugs as they are unaffected by typical treatments involving the use of antibiotics (NIH, n.d.). Two highly infectious examples of these bacteria are Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus (MRSA) and Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE). The Shepherrd Center, a rehabilitation center in Atlanta, Georgia, takes into consideration that by nature, rehabilitation as it relates to physical therapy requires a lot of physical contact (Testing for MRSA, 2013). Even with the universal precautions in place within a facility, the overall likelihood of cross contamination and the passing infections either by direct or indirect contact are at an all time high. As a result of this increased risk of spreading the MRSA infection, the Shepherrd Center implemented a way to identify MRSA within their specific patient population before they are admitted. They proposed that as individuals come in, each one is given nasal swabs while their medical histories and current evaluations are taken. This initial assessment allows for the healthcare staff to be better prepared for the possible infections that each patient may carry into their treatment facility. Since executing this practice, the Shepherred Center has seen a 43% reduction in healthcare acquired MRSA rates (Testing for MRSA, 2013). The Shepherred Center is able to continue with this initial screening assessment without increasing patient cost because the money saved from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
