Essay on Prohibition in 20th Century America
Prohibition in 20th Century America
In the early part of the 20th century some people had had enough of liquor and its deleterious
effects on people and their behavior. Some believed that alcohol, and drunkenness were the most
worrying afflictions that our nation faced. At least on the surface this was what prohibition was
about. On the flip side, it seemed that prohibition was about a still dominant, overwhelmingly rural,
white Anglo Saxon Protestant establishment, aware that its privileges and natural right to rule were
being increasingly threatened by the massive arrival of largely despised (and feared) beer swilling,
wine drinking new American immigrants (Behr, 1996). Many of the Americans had descended from
Protestant, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many of these believers were fanatical in their beliefs and in the delivery and spread of their
message. Little by little the movements gained a stronger and stronger following of those who
believed that alcohol and its consumption were rotting away the moral integrity, health, and overall
foundation of American society. One of the largest constituents of this group was women. Women
became so fixated on this cause that they made it into the first women s mass movement in
American history...[and] also the modern world s first large scale, nonviolent protest movement
(Behr, 1996). These women used their determination and a strict sense of religious morality to
spread their message and to gain a large audience as their efforts became increasingly covered in the
increasingly important newspapers.
Prohibition was enacted as the 18th amendment to the Constitution. The bill, known as the
Volstead Act, after Andrew J. Volstead, a Republican congressman from the state of Minnesota,
was introduced on the 27th of May, 1919. After three months of debate the bill was passed by a
vote of 255 to 166. On the 5th of September the Senate voted and passed the bill too. It was then
made official after a final vote in the House of 321 to 70, and so was made law on October 10th
(Behr, 1996).
The law made sure that alcohol was not easy to lay hands on. All advertising was banned along with
the consumption and production of alcohol itself. Also any equipment

I Loved The National Geographic And Discovery Channels And...
I always loved learning, I loved the national geographic and discovery channels and reading
articles, but I hated school with a passion. I despised getting up and in kindergarden I actually
stabbed my mom in the hand with a pencil in protest of writing my letters. I believe that s when a
lot of things clicked, at least on my moms end. A lot of parents would have forced their kids to do
well in schoolmine, never did. I couldn t thank them enough for it. Elementary school was
miserable for me, not a lot of friends and I was no teachers pet. I showed little to no interest in
what my teachers had to say. From kindergarten to sixth grade my teachers told my mom I wouldn
t make it. Not in middle school, and high school, probably shouldn t count on that either. Year
after year my mom took this verbal beating from my teachers saying she should be doing more ,
there s something wrong with me all my teachers suggested my mom get me tested for ADD and
ADHD my mom put it off until fourth grade when I got written up for writing I hate school and I
hate my teacher. she took me in to get tested but to everyone s surprise I did not have ADD or
ADHD. So my mom took my to a psychologist to figure out why I was so against school. In a
short amount of time the psychologist told my mom that no matter how hard anyone tried they
could not force me to pay attention or do the work, and that, that was okay, as long as I understood
and accepted the consequences. From then on All my mom

New York City Descriptive Writing
I was 12 years old and about to embark upon a trek that would cover 150 miles and end in New
York City. I was caught up in all the festivities of the farewell ceremony and the warm heartfelt
goodbyes from my family. I really had no idea of where we were going though, of course New
York city but how we would get there was a mystery to me. I knew we would follow the
aqueduct, the underground tunnel that carries water down to the city for its 8 million inhabitants
to use. I figured if I put one foot in front of the other and followed the person in front of me I
should be all right. Unfortunately when we woke each morning we were not filled with the same
fervor as the night before. Everyday we would push on spurred by the image of that yellow

Case Study on the Danish Wind Energy System
The Technological Innovation System
Case study on the Danish Wind Energy System
Questions 1 and 2: The two most important scientific journals that publish theoretical work on

The two most important scientific papers are research policy with 330 published articles about
innovation systems and technological forecasting and social change with 364 published articles on
innovation systems. These two journals have the most articles published on Innovation systems and
the biggest journal impact factor.

It s important for an innovation system that knowledge can diffuse from one company to another,
especially in a heterogeneous context. It can be measured by number of workshops, conferences
and mapping size of the network.
Guidance of the search
Due to limited resources, companies have to choose what they want to develop and investigate. The
things they choose are the things of which they think it can positively change their processes. This
function can be measured by mapping the specific targets of firms, companies and governments.
Market formation
It s almost impossible for new technologies to compete directly from the beginning with incumbent
technologies. Therefore these new technologies need niche markets or (governmental) subsidies to
exist. This function can be measured by the number of niche markets and the number of subsidies.
Resource mobilization
There are financial and human inputs necessary to make the other functions working properly. It is
hard to measure this function, the best way is to interview different actors and institutions.
Creation of legitimacy/counteract resistance to change
Often when there is a new technologie an old one has to be overthrown. This can be measured by
mapping the growth and lobby actions of investment groups.
According to Porter there are 4 determinants to indicate whether there is competitive advantage in
an innovation system. The 4 determinants are:

Sacrifice Of Iphigenia Essay
Sacrifice is a common theme in Greek Mythology. Sometimes a sacrifice is made for the greater
good of a situation, and sometimes the sacrifice is a person. In one myth, a girl named Iphigenia
is sacrificed to gain better results for the Trojan army. She is sacrificed on a public altar and even
her father is willing to sacrificeher to benefit his soldiers. In The Sacrifice of Iphigenia, Giovanni
Battista Tiepolo shows that as long as nothing happens to them, people do not care what happens to
others, while Iphigenia by Alfred Lord Tennyson shows that death is a hard, terrible, and painful
event.
The Sacrifice of Iphigenia has a tone of misfortune. Iphigenia is best known as the daughter of
Agamemnon who is the leader of Troy s Greek forces. Agamemnon aggravated Artemis, the god of
the hunt, by boasting about his hunting skills. Agamemnon also kills one of Artemis sacred hares.
For this Agamemnon has to sacrifice his daughter Iphigenia for the favorable winds from the gods.
In the painting, Agamemnon is standing behind the altar where Iphigenia is being sacrificed. He
looks sad and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While in the poem, Tennyson depicts the way Iphigenia feels during the event. Not that the
poem is necessarily about the painting; but is coincidentally an exact representation of the same
events from two different perspectives. In the painting it shows Iphigenia just sacrificed, and it
is more of an outsider s view of the story. In the poem, it is a look at the situation from one person
s point of view, and it makes you feel more for Iphigenia. In the painting, there are lots of people
standing around watching the sacrifice, and it makes you feel aggravated and disgusted that
people would be there just to watch. The painting made the story seem almost theatrical or like it
was a scene from a play. The poem made the story seem more real like you are there with her and
can feel her agony and

Gmo Agribusy
Agribusiness and large scale farming have seen their fair share of both critics and supporters,
especially today, as the internet has become an unlimited source of information and biased
articles. Throughout the last few decades, technologies in the farming industry have advanced
immensely as the need for more food faster has increased, but some still question the safety and
trustworthiness of genetically modified organisms, also known as GMOs, while others find these
technological advances necessary to feed our endlessly increasing population. By far the more
popular view of agribusiness and the large scale farming is the critical, anti GMO point of view.
As Mary Jalonick (2014) writes on the issue of genetically modified foods, through social media
and internet access, many people have come to form concerns over... Show more content on

Michael Pollan (2006) writes, Before Haber s invention, the sheer amount of life earth could
support the size of crops and therefore the number of human bodies was limited by the amount of
nitrogen that bacteria and lightning could fix, he writes. By 1900, Europeans scientists had
recognized that unless a way was found to augment this naturally occurring nitrogen, the growth of
the human population would soon grind to a very painful halt (p. 2). Genetic modifications of our
foods had to be made in order to sustain the rate at which our population was growing.
Agribusiness focusses on the advancement of technology in order to produce more food at a more
efficient pace. Donald Barlett and James Steele (2008) write, Monsanto developed G.M. seeds that
would resist its own herbicide, Roundup, offering farmers a convenient way to spray fields with
weed killer without affecting crops. Convenience is key in agribusiness as it allows farmers to
produce more, which is necessary to keep up with population

Describe Two Different Types Of Organic And Organic Growth
1.Describe two major ways in which a company can grow. Give examples to illustrate the two
ways of growing. There are two ways of growing a company that is organic and in organic.
Organic growth is when expanding the business by natural way such as making profit and
opening branches and hiring more staff. On the other hand when a business is growing
inorganically, is when a company buys majority shares of another similar company or purchasing
the entire company and operates as its own. Example of an organic growth of a company would be
MacDonald fast food chain. This company started from the scratch and expands its business within
the region and expands overseas. They increase their revenue and invested on purchasing properties
and increase their product. A good example of inorganic company growing is when Nokia and
Microsoft merge together for better customer base and new channels of distribution that resulted in

Antifa s Anti-Capitalist Movement

movement who are considered the far left in politics; some are considered anarchists, left wing
extremists, socialists or communists. I live in the state of New Jersey where they recently listed
Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization, specifically stating that the movement is inciting
violence. I don t see this movement as a threat but rather they are just protestors extremely upset
with who we have in charge as President and strongly believe he is a Fascist. They strongly oppose
white supremacy and dislike authority. Only a small percentage of them are actually committing
crimes such as vandalism and assault. The problem with this movement

Esports is a controversial topic when it comes to professional gamers, especially in western

The Bell Jar Research Paper
Sylvia Plath s importance in American history stems from the literary eminence of her writing,
and her works show the rigid conditions of mid twentieth century women. Plath s significance
really comes from the ways in which she opened doors with her writing that prior to her have
never been explored before. She was a feminist martyr who challenged a patriarchal society. She
posed questions that no one else seemed to be asking about the role that I woman plays in society.
Her book The Bell Jar, displayed a protagonist who struggled with basic questions about sex.
Questions like, if I decide to have sex before marriage am I a bad person? Why can men have sex
with multiple people and women can t? Sylvia Plath is still relevant today with adolescences....

After researching the end of the book, the recognition of connections of all kinds became
obvious, the electrocution of the Rosenbergs and the shock treatment at the end of the book
have a metaphorical if not a realistic kinship. In the end the Rosenbergs just meant death to
Sylvia Plath. I couldn t help wondering what it would be like, being burned alive, all along your
nerves. The Bell Jar seems to be a realistic account of her own suicide attempt while she attended
Smith University. Her use of sound, sensation and her poetic ordering of material all connect to
the sensational details of her personal life or more specifically her death. The dark twist, as
strange as it is, is the primary reason why readers find it so fascinating. Plath s actual biography
provides a clear conclusion to the ambiguous ending of The Bell Jar, where Esther enters her exit
interview at the psychiatric institution at which she has spent months recovering. Thats the
temptation at least, to simply place Plath s life into the novel. However, it isn t certain that just
because Plath ended her own life that the fictional character in The Bell Jar, was intended to mimic

Compare And Contrast Canadian Culture Vs American Culture
Canadas s culture is in many ways very similar to our culture in the United States. This in part due
to our proximity to one another. However despite the similarities of our two countries there is
some very distinct differences between the two. We as Americans make several misconceptions
about the large country to our north, which are made out of ignorance. Such as the Title of this
essay. In this essay I will provide you with some brief history about Canadaand its establishment.
As well as elaborate on many key characteristics, holidays and demographics of that make up

The largest ethnic demographic of the Canadian population are either English Canadian or
French Canadian, making up a staggering 80% of the population of Canada. Most of the French
Canadians located mostly in Quebec can trace their lineage back to the first French colonial
families. After whiles the second largest ethnic group is Asians. Making up four percent of the
population many of these people migrated to Canada for their willingness to work for low pay
in dangerous conditions for the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railroad. Blacks make up
three percent of the population and are Canada s largest minority. Many of these people are fairly
recent immigrant families from Africa or the Caribbean, but there is a small minority of black
Canadians that can trace their roots to the millions of African Slaved imported during the era of
the Slave trade. Canada has taken the stance that everyone is equal, and because of this multi
culturalism has thrived within the large country over the past 4 decades. Their brand of
multiculturalism does not impose a burden to assimilate into idealized norms of what a Canadian
is. The country which was once 97% white back in 1981, It now welcomes roughly 300,000
immigrants a year 80% of those are non white immigrants. Of course there is still some level
discrimination and social tension caused between the multiple cultures that inhabit Canada, but it is

British Secret Intelligence MI6 Essays
British Secret Intelligence:
MI6
Introduction Hello Mr. Bond. The character, James Bond, usually comes to mind when one
thinks of the British agency MI6. An agency that enables its agents to have a license to kill,
enabling them to do anything, at any cost to achieve the greater good, with the head of the
agency M sitting behind a desk giving orders. This sounds like an agency that anyone would love
to work for. In reality, it is an agency that has been through several wars and has evolved over the
years with lies, secrets, and betrayal (Corera, 2011).
At one point the British Secret Intelligence, often known as MI6, was very similar to the fictional

History
The British Secret Intelligence Service is one of the oldest surviving foreign intelligence gathering
organizations in the spy world. MI6 was founded in October 1909, originally as the Foreign
Section of the new Secret Service Bureau. The man behind the curtain that established the
organization was Commander Mansfield Cumming (Thomas, 2009). In the beginning, the
agency was surrounded with so much secrecy that it was difficult to get the agency off of the
ground to meet its desired potential. However, by the end of 1909, Cummings was able to
successfully create an organization devoted to the clandestine collection of foreign intelligence
(Jeffery, 2010). As much as the agency was Cummings brainchild, the wheels starting to spin
early in 1909 when a sub committee was put together to outline a plan to get Great Britain back
into the intelligence collection business. The sub committee initially wanted a secret service
bureau that would be in close contact with the War Office, Admiralty, and the Home Office
(Corera, 2012). It would need to have three guidelines in place to follow: 1) serve as a middle
between the Admiralty and the War Office for foreign spies who want to sell information to the
government, 2) branch out to various parts of Great Britain to keep in touch with local constables
to ascertain the nature and degree of espionage that is

David Hume s Theory of Ethics Essay
David Hume is considered to be one of the big three British empiricists, along with Hobbes and
Locke, and lived near the end of the Enlightenment. The Catholic Church was losing its control over
science, politics and philosophy and the Aristotelian world view was being swallowed up by a more
mechanistic viewpoint. Galileo found the theory provided by Copernicus to be correct, that our
earth was not the center of everything, but the celestial bodies including the earth circled the sun.
Mathematicians abounded. Pascal developed the first mechanical calculator and Newtonian physics

The latter being the kind that he uses as a naturalist.
David Hume s most famous quote is Reason is, and ought only to be the slave of the passions, and
can never pretend to any other office than to serve and obey them. To understand the implications of
this quote as a basis for an ethical theory you need to understand that every other ethical theory
attempts to derive how things ought to be from how things are. The jumps from matters of fact and
relations of ideas perceived by reason, to value judgments perceived by emotions, are made in
Hume s opinion with no logical reason. There is nothing contradictory in the statement the sun will
not rise in the morning, it is not unreasonable. We only feel that it ought to continue rising in the
morning. The scientific method uses inductive reasoning to construct a hypothesis and Hume does
not contend that it should not be used. It has been useful thus far in making predictions and it is the
only tool that we have for understanding the world around us.
David Hume s ethical theory sits between philosophy and modern day psychology. He uses the
empirical method to study the natural tendencies of human beings to engage their emotions, and in
our emotions is where morality could be understood best. One must remember

College Sports Is Not A Career Or Profession
An article written by Horace Mitchell called, Students Are Not Professional Athletes , caught my
attention the moment I read the title. In the article, Mitchell said Collegiate sports is not a career or
profession. It is the students vehicle to a higher education degree. Meaning that you only play
collegesport for four year, if that. You are at college to get an education and to get a job after and
start your life. There are only a select number of collegiate athletes that will go to the
professionals. If you are not one of those select few, but still receiving a scholarship, you are
there to play sport because it pays your tuition. Mitchell then says that most division one athlete
do not have time for a job, but maybe raising the financial aid would help out. I think this would
be a good idea, but if they increasing the financial aid, they should make it available to all
divisions. But, if it is increased, what happens if the NCAA runs out of money to pay for all the
athletes to go to college for free? Where would the money come from then. No matter the situation
involving the NCAA it would take years and years of figuring out to even be considered. Kristi
Dosh wrote an article titled The Problems With Paying College Athletes . Her main argument
against athletes getting paid is, where will all the money come from? She says that there are only
fourteen schools that are making profit without have to rely on institutional support. Those schools

Tucson High Magnet School Case
Tucson High Magnet School was established in 1892 as part of the Tucson Unified School District
in Tucson, Arizona. It is the oldest high school in Arizona and the largest high school in southern
Arizona. Its location has changed and moved over time;
On September 10th, 1906, the school was located in the Plaza School at 13th Street and 4th avenue.
A few weeks after that, it was relocated to a two room building located on East 10th Street.
In 1908, there was a final relocation to the newly constructed Tucson High Magnet School Building
on East 6th Street.
Lyman and Place were hired as architects for the Tucson High SchoolMain Building in March of
1921, following the successful $750,000 bond issue for the new Tucson High Magnet School. They
began construction in 1923 and it was completed in 1924.
The first designs submitted were to be for a school housing 1,000 students, but revised estimates of
school population raised this figure to 1,500.
In 1925, the grandstand on the athletic field to the west of the school was constructed by R. H.
Martin at a cost of $10,950.
In 1939, the annex to Tucson High Magnet School was constructed at a cost of $273,346 and it
underwent two remodeling projects, one in 1945 (for $18,392) and the other in 1951 (for $86,795).
The cafeteria was constructed in 1945 at a cost of $19,585.85 and the old gymnasium was
remodeled into classrooms in 1948 on a contract for $47,900.90.

A Good Man Is Hard To Find Essay examples
Flannery O Connor s short story collection A Good Man is Hard to Find has many elements of a
southern gothic work. Images of ancient castles with sliding panels create suspicious themes and
settings that lead the readers into the dark and gloomy world of the southern United States. With all
of the violence, horror, and dismal surroundingspresented in O Connors stories there is too a moral
messagegiven. Later gothic work did not always explain horror like this, holding little moral value
to contrast their grotesque images (notes, November 1). O Connor s stories do include a strong

name. Sammy then states that quot;a good man is hard to find. quot; Could this be forewarning to
the grandmother s confused values of what is right or wrong (good or bad)?
Soon the family is on their way again but the grandmother forces her way by using the children.
Getting the kids exited enough to annoy their father so much that he breaks down and changes the
route and seeks out the old gothic house. We soon learn that the grandmother has made a
geographical mistake thinking Georgia for Tennessee. Her ignorance starts a chain of events
which will result in all their deaths: Brining the cat along even though she knew it wold not be
allowed, forcing her will even when unsure if it was right (O Connor, 2, 11). The grandmother s
uncertainty of geography could be read as mirroring her spiritual uncertainty.
After the car crashes we see that the grandmother is self serving. She uses gender roles (
quot;you wouldn t shoot a woman quot;) and religious images to try and save herself and to
make the Misfit to look well upon her (O Connor, 14 19). This plea seems very self serving. Why
not ask quot;you wouldn t shoot a family, would you? quot; The argument of religion as a reason
to be good is rejected by the Misfit (O Connor, 21). By dismissing Christ s history the Misfit also
rejects the grandmother s self serving values.

Film Noir Research Paper
This essay aims to discuss the origins and traits of film noir. The characteristics of film noir will be

and knowledge of the characteristics of film noir.
We could make the case, as many critics have done, that film noir is, in fact, not a genre at all but
merely a particular stylistic inflection of a crime drama. (Nelmes, 2012.194)
Film noir is not easily defined. However, the actual words came about from France and the term
means Black Cinema . The term was used to describe certain Hollywood films that were

such as the trait of the virtuous redeemer vs. the femme fatal. In fatal attraction there is a strong
contrast between the two characters of the femme fatal (Alex) and the virtuous redeemer (Beth),
as Alex is blonde, single career guided, a devilish diva and is portrayed as Dan s equal (Beth s
husband) due to the clothing, masculine name and camera angles. Alex the femme fatal conveys
classic characteristic femme fatal traits as she is childless, dangerous, and seductive and also
challenges family and social order. Beth is then seen as boring, childbearing and innocent. These
traits all lead to the weakness of the typical noir male character where he sleeps with the femme
fatal. The femme fatal character is the most dangerous; he outer beauty covers her wicked thoughts.
In the Maltese falcon and double indemnity the femme fatal characters used their looks through
sexual ambiguities to seduce Walter and Sam. When Walter first stepped into Dietrichsons home the
flirtatious Phyllis immediately welcomed him Phyllis (in a robe): I m Mrs. Dietrichson. Is there

Symbolism In Edgar Allen Poe s The Raven
The poem The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe can have many symbolic meanings. Really depending
on what type of reader you are and how you interpret things has a big impact on the symbolic
meanings. Per chapter 25 of the book How to Read Literature Like a Professor A lot of things in
the world have more or less ready made associations. But it also says that there are layers of
possible meanings so readers take what they can find and are prepared to deal with at the moment
they are reading at.
Using this information there isn t really a wrong way to look at the symbols in this poem, which
are many. In this interpretation, I will talk about the five symbols that are repeated or made
emphasis on in this poem. These symbols include; Lenore, the Raven, ... Show more content on

begin to make connections between some of the symbols too. Some symbols are a lot easier to

Essay On 60 Minute Overtime
After reviewing two shows broadcasted on television (NBC News and a television series called
60 Minute Overtime), a newspaper article from Daily News, and two articles online that focus on
the Challengers story, I believe the shows broadcasted on television are the most reliable. The
newspaper article was very reliable especially since it was published the day after the explosion. It
had a lot of the emotions felt during that time period. Unfortunately, the newspaper was not able to
provide a definite answer as to why the crash was caused because the cause was not for sure then.

Both articles are reliable but do not help the readers understand how much this affected America.
The two shows broadcasted on television proved to be the most reliable. The National
Broadcasting Company is a news corporation, and on the day of the Challenger they aired it live.
As a lot of America was watching live, so was the news reporter (Kent Shocknek) and the voice
of the launch control (Hugh Harris). Both of their reactions were how they reacted live. The
viewers then and now see the crisis happen with their own eyes and can feel the emotion that
was felt. NBC is one of the most reliable sources because it only gave facts, and it came from the
day of the Challenger mission. 60 Minute Overtime is a television show that focused an episode
on the Challenger mission. This episode brought people that were very close to this mission. For
example Christa McAuliffe s mom. The people brought in were interviewed about the subject. This
episode was a whole sixty minutes focusing on facts and emotions about the Challenger. This is
very reliable because not only do the listeners learn about what happened that day, but they can hear
about the emotions felt and the opinions of the ones

Lyrical Ballads Captures The Hour of Feeling Essay
Lyrical Ballads were written in a time of great change. They were dominated by the French
Revolution and both Wordsworth and Coleridge felt great impact from this. There was disruption
all over with the American War of Independence and other wars worldwide. Britain itself was
changing rapidly due to colonial expansion, which brought new wealth, ideas and fashion, and
there was much disturbance to both the people and the land with the act of enclosure, which may
have meant more effective farming but less work. The introduction of the Poor Laws meant that
landowners paid their remaining staff very little knowing that they would be supplemented by
poor relief. However the conditions stated by the Laws before aid would be given were very... Show

The middle of the eighteenth century was the height of what became known as the ?Age of
Reason?, where people believed that thoughts and actions should be based on the material
world. This supported John Locke?s theories that a populace could legitimately revolt against a
tyrannical government. This would have greatly appealed to British people at a time where the
government has become increasingly oppressive due to their fear of an uprising. The desire for
stability was shown in the Church. However this gave many people more reason to feel the need
for change as it said that salvation lay in duty and obedience and that children were merely blank
pages to be educated and therefore gain decency and social responsibility. Dreams and
imagination were distrusted and discouraged. Lyrical Ballads broke through all this,
encouraging imagination and telling us to learn from the simplicity of children, therefore
appealing to many people. The 1780?s saw lots of inspired political and social movements with
people hoping to rid the world of slavery, promote women?s rights, protect workers, increase
suffrage, promote tolerance and greater sexual freedom. Many of these issues are present in
Lyrical Ballads. ?Mad Mother?, ?The Thorn?, ?The Female Vagrant? and ?The Forsaken Indian
Woman? all call for better rights for women as it was society that really caused their suffering in
these poems. In ?The Thorn? the woman may never had killed her child with more

How Did World War 1 Cause Ww1

World War I took place between July 1914 November 11, 1918. By the end of this war 17 million
people would be killed. Lots of people have the impression that the cause of the war is a whole list
of things. And that may be true but, while researching this topic I found that the most important
factors to the war were the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, defense alliances, and
imperialism. If these incidents had never occurred this war could have been avoided.
The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the main cause of the war. It was the leading
factor to all the other causes such as imperialism and the defense alliances. It all started when
Austria Hungary blamed Serbia for the assassination of the Archduke. Austria Hungary declared
war on Serbia, Russia then got involved to defend Serbia. Germany seeing Russia mobilizing,
declared war on Russia to protect their ally. France was then drawn in against Germany and Austria
Hungary. Germany attacked France through Belgium pulling Britain into the war. Japan then
entered the war. Later, Italy and the United Stateswould enter on the side of their allies. The whole
process was really a chain reaction leading from the assassination. ... Show more content on

Optimism as a Theme for Candide Essay
Optimism as a Theme for Candide
Just as on the title, Candide, or Optimism, Optimism is also used as a major theme. Voltaire s satire
of philosophical optimism is one of the major issues of Candide. Throughout the story, satirical
references to the best of all possible worlds contrast with natural catastrophes and human
wrongdoing. According to Wikipedia, optimism, the opposite of pessimism, is a lifeview where the
world is looked upon the as a positive place. Optimists generally believe that people are inherently
good. These people are said to have a positive outlook on life, believing that given time, things will
work out in the end. Also according to Wikipedia, In philosophy, optimism is linked with the name

Private misfortunes make for public welfare, Pangloss concludes. This is true in a optimistic society
According to SparkNotes.com:
Pangloss and his student Candide maintain that everything is for the best in this best of all
possible worlds. This idea is a reductively simplified version of the philosophies of a number of
Enlightenment thinkers, most notably Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz. To these thinkers, the
existence of any evil in the world would have to be a sign that God is either not entirely good or
not all powerful, and the idea of an imperfect God is nonsensical. These philosophers took for
granted that God exists, and concluded that since God must be perfect, the world he created must
be perfect also. According to these philosophers, people perceive imperfections in the world only
because they do not understand God s grand plan. Because Voltaire does not accept that a perfect
God (or any God) has to exist, he can afford to mock the idea that the world must be completely
good, and he heaps merciless satire on this idea throughout the novel. The optimists, Pangloss and
Candide, suffer and witness a wide variety of horrorsВ—floggings, rapes, robberies, unjust
executions, disease, an earthquake, betrayals, and crushing ennui. These horrors do not serve any
apparent greater good, but point only to the cruelty and folly of humanity and the indifference of
the natural world. Pangloss struggles to find justification for the terrible things in the world, but his

Louis Xiv s Influence On The World War II
Karl Johnson A Block, History Lisa Feirtag The Sun God Louis XIV is known for his powerful
approach to rule. For example, within foreign policy, pressing the invasion of the Spanish
Netherlands in 1667, boldly deeming it his wife s rightful inheritance. The conflict was named,
The War of Devolution, and lasted a year. France lost, although Louis XIV did not give up, and
engaged in the great Franco Dutch War from 1672 to 1678. During the war, France managed to
acquire more land and the victory promoted France to the status of a dominant power. After all,
Louis XIV was known to France as the Sun King, the most powerful and god like being on earth,
he couldn t stand for defeat. This new dominant status, coupled with Louis XIV s audacious
campaigns to constantly expand territory through the use of military force, positioned France
as an immediate threat to other European nations, and positioned Louis XIV as a looming
figure over all of Europe. Louis XIV thought of war as the sport of Kings, and he put a lot into
his favorite pastime. Louis XIV was born September 5, 1638 in Saint Germaine en Laye, France.
He became king and official leader of 19 million French in 1643 at the age of four years old.
Rather than a scholarly education, Louis XIV was educated in practicality and logic. Louis s first
goal as king was to centralize and rein in total control of France. He did this by establishing reforms

The Purpose Of Equality In Langston Hughes s Democracy
The equality in our world is not working, we always try to make it equal for every and each
person, but as we can see it still unequal. The Langston Hughes in his poem Democracy trying to
say that everyone is equal in this world and everyone should have equal laws. The poem has
written when African Americans were getting to slavery and he was trying to make the world
equal for everyone. A lot of us would ask, why did this happen? what was the purpose? it doesn t
have any explanation or any right. We all are living in this land and we would make it equal for
everyone and does not let things go as they wantto.
We are the one who should make this world equal for everyone. The world itself is unequal so
people should try to make the communities equal to balance this. As Langston Hughes says in his
poem Democracy , I have as much right / As the other fellow has / To stand / On my two feet
/ And own the land. (line 5 9) In this stanza the writer uses simile to explain that he is equal to
everyone in this world and he can be a president, he can be an athlete, and we should not make a
difference based on people s religion, or nationality, or language, and everyone is the same. The
world is divided into two parts people who want to change something and people who just say let
things happen. So our future is under the question, and we would not know how a thing can turn
good to bad or bad to good. Hughes was the one who wanted to change the world, to make it equal,
and as we can see in his poem Democracy , I tire of hearing people say, / Let things take their
course. / Tomorrow is another day. / I do not needmy freedom when I m dead. He was telling us
that people should not wait for something to happen because it might not happen in your
lifetime, so why not try while you have the opportunity to. People around him was telling him to
wait to let things go, and he was not angry because his idea was that we don t know what would
happen tomorrow, so we need to do it today. So overall he was trying to make a change make the
world equal in his lifetime, and be an owner in this land.
As long as people think that something will change it is not going to happen because we are the
one who would change it if we seat and

Similarities Between Buddhism And Buddhism
Buddhism, like other world religions, is not one homogeneous grouping of like minded devotees
adhering to one school of thought. Just as Christianity has its Catholics and Protestants, and Islam
its Sunnis and Shiites, Buddhism is also comprised of various schools and sects. Some scholars
separate Buddhist schools into geographical groupings, such as Southern, Eastern and Northern
traditions, whereas some prefer to focus on a more tradition specific delineation, such as Theravada,
Mahayana, and Vajrayana Buddhism(Cousins 1998, p. 370; Buddhism 2015 ). All traditions accept
the fundamental Buddhist doctines of Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, anatta
(absence of soul) and karma (causation), but differ on other significant aspects. This essay will
compare and contrast two Buddhist traditions, the Therevada Buddhism of Sri Lanka, and
Mahayana Buddhism of China. Theravada Buddhism can also be characterised as representative of
the Southern tradition of Buddhism, whereas Mahayana is of the Eastern tradition. This essay will
also address how these particular types of Buddhism developed in their respective countries.
Prior to the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka in 247 BCE, the cultural environment was
characterised by a mix of indigenous (veddha) and Aryan beliefs, influenced by elements of
mainland Indian culture (Perera 2013). It was the Indian Emperor Asoka who sent his son,
Mahinda, to introduce Buddhism to the Sri Lankan king (Robinson, Johnson Bhikku 2005, p.

Finally, many animals that are declined from limited admission shelters are dumped on city streets
and in rural areas creating the potential for uncontrolled reproduction and thus creating more

possibly harmful to the management and wellbeing of stray animals.
The actual record shows an entirely different outcome. The no kill movement started when Richard
Avanizo took over the San Francisco SPCA in April 1976. During this time, humane societies and
SPCA s followed the tenets being promoted by the Animal Humane Society in which they were
required to kill the bulk of animals in their care due to the large amount of animals, and limited
number of homes but later, Avanzino forced a reluctant animal control director to sign a
memorandum of understanding between the two agencies that guaranteed a home for every
healthy dog and cat in San Francisco (Redemption 37). This was known as the adoption pact which
was a huge step in the no kill movement with a result of zero healthy shelter animal deaths that year
(Irreconcilable Differences 49). This success led to other shelters adopting this philosophy.
Today, the primary goals of no kill shelters are to be able to find animals

How Cooperative Learning Impacts Higher Order And Critical...
The challenge this researcher faces lies in the structure of a particular Accelerated Math II (10th
Grade) curriculum at Lucy C. Laney High School in Augusta, Georgia, in which all students
enrolled in the course have to be proficient in all areas of the curriculum. The researcher has
observed very little higher order/critical thinking and problem solving and low motivation/morale
which may impact student performance in the math course. After a year of intense coursework,
including real world application practice, and many short answer and multiple choice assessments,
students show minimum performance on an accelerated curriculum provided to them. This
challenges the instructional efforts of the teacher to increase the performance and promote higher
order thinking in the math class. Therefore the purpose for this study is to determine if cooperative
learning impacts higher order/critical thinking skills and student achievement. Review of the
Literature Cooperative learning is one of the best studied academic strategies in the history of
educational research, with over 1,000 research studies on the subject dating as far back as 1898

point of entry into the literature is meta analyses of large numbers of studies. The most important
piece of information is that cooperative learning models have been established to have an obviously
positive impact on student achievement.

Analysis Of The Sniper By Liam OFlaherty
The Sniper, written by Liam O Flaherty, is a story about a Republican sniper in the Irish civil war
in 1922. This story tells of a night spent on a roof looking for the enemy, the Free Staters. In this
short description of the nights events, the sniper kills 3 people; a soldier, an informer, and finally
an enemy sniperon the roof across the road from him. In the end this enemy sniper turns out to be
the republicans brother. This story shows the the specific characteristics a sniper must have to carry
out their duty. A key moment in this text which influenced the sniper is the Civil waritself.

Then he thought of a plan. Taking off his cap, he placed it over the muzzle of his rifle. Then he
pushed the rifle slowly upward over the parapet, until the cap was visible from the opposite side
of the street. Almost immediately there was a report, and a bullet pierced the center of the cap.
The sniper slanted the rifle forward.. This shows how his intelligence is an essential trait for the
sniper. Being witty and being able to adapt to situations are characteristics soldiers throughout
history have had to have, including today. Using his cap to imitate his head was a way of finding
the enemies position, and more evolved versions of this technique are used today in war zones.
Lastly, the war changed the sniper by misplacing him. The sniper is described as a young person.
His face was the face of a student, thin and aesthetic, but his eyes had the cold gleam of the
fanatic. The use of strong adjectives such as thin and aesthetic and the cold gleam of a fanatic
show how the sniper is misplaced in this environment. Further into the text, youthful guilt became
apparent. The sniper looked at his enemy falling and he shuddered. The lust of battle died in him.
He became bitten with remorse. This use of metaphor shows the reader how quickly his emotions
change, showing his guilt and regret for what he has done. Lastly, the snipers curiosity was
influenced, as he felt he needed to find out the identity of his victim. He felt this because of how the

someone does when they lose their virginity. She did not like her first taste of Southern Comfort,
even though the look and the smell reminded her of apple cider, spicy yet sweet. After that day,
Koren s perspective changed that led her down a very dangerous unhealthy path towards self
destruction. Even though the taste was bad the way it made her feel made her addicted. She liked
the way alcohol made her come out of her quite shell. It made her bolder and daring, which she
liked, especially because of the new friends and the attention it gave her as a result.
Koren grew up in a society that made it more likely for under aged kids to drink. It was almost part
of the norm for some kids. They all encourage it each other to do it. The day Koren took her first
drink, she went to a party and her and her friends passed around a bottle of alcohol; she noticed
that most of the girls she was surrounded by were confident about what they were doing and she
was certain that it was not their first time. They all were only in eight grade at the time. Koren was

Internship Reflection
While I was doing my internship, I worked in the newly created Vocational Center. The Vocational
Center was the brain child of my supervisor Cathy Zuback. The Vocational Center had been running
for three months unofficially before I started my internship and I had the privilege of being there
for the grand opening on June 7th, 2017. The Vocational Center exists to help residents of the
mission create resumes, job search, prepare for interviews, and get the necessary identification that
they need to get hired.
The Vocational Center also provides various job readiness and certification classes. We provide
Serve Safe, Retail Training, and forklift training, just to name a few. Each person that goes
through one of the Vocational Center classes gets a certificate that they can add to their resume.
While I was interning, I helped teach The Bridge the Gap and Retail Training class. Both classes
introduced me to a wide variety of people who each had their own unique problems and futures. It
was an incredible oppurtunity to teach people who had experienced so much in their lives and the
hope that they had for the future.
The first theme that I noticed within the City Mission is power of hope. The Washington City
Mission s slogan is Hope for the Homeless and it is evidence through many of the Mission s
resident (City Mission 2015). However, no one in the Washington City Mission exemplified
hope more than Clinton Jones. Clinton Jones is a resident of the Mission who has had a rough
life. He moved from his home in the projects of Philadelphia at age eighteen in order to leave the
drug and crime filled future that was set before him. A few years ago, Clinton had two stokes
that damaged his memory, emotional, and analytical functions, but luckily didn t damage his
ability to move. He was in my Retail Training class and was determined to make a better life for
himself. Clinton often says that he may not be the quickest or the smartest, but he will be doing
the best that he can. He has learned so much through this class and I am so proud to see how he has
grown. He is currently working at the City Mission s thrift store and plans to move out of the
Mission in September into his own apartment. Another theme that was

Humor In Joseph Heller s Catch-22
Similarly, Heller s use of humor to alter a reader s emotions drastically, distracts readers from his
original point. While reading Catch 22 one goes through a wide spectrum of emotions, and those
emotions can change in a matter of seconds. One example of this is when Nately s whore finds
out about Nately s death. Her angry reaction is understandable, but Heller stretches this out for
quite a while. The grieving woman is transformed through the dark humor that Heller uses so
liberally, her character is revised into a maniac, set on killing Yossarian. It is this type of nonsense
that is not needed in order for Heller to make his point. The reader understands Heller s point
about grieving after he spends seven consecutive pages describing Nately s... Show more content on

This is perhaps his most successful use of dark humor. The maid in the lime colored panties and
her relationship with Yossarian is an example of the point Heller is trying to make. As John
Muste noted, Love is reduced to lustful sexual encounters in which women are barely human
(Muste). Heller s statement about love is truly well, and his use of dark humor is quite good.
Talking about how Yossarian would sleep with anyone, and the light hearted attitude he used
when Aarfy raped the girl. His use of humor does an exceptional job of poking fun at the state of
love. Although he does a better job in this category, winning a battle is not the same as winning a
war. Heller is successful in making his point about love but fails elsewhere within the same topic
by over using dark humor. Heller s statement about love, is lost in the web of dark jokes that
Heller is constantly weaving. Instead of coming across as a powerful statement, Heller s erotic
chapters are accepted as just that. Although his purpose is understood, Catch 22 is not a
commentary on love, it is a commentary on war. In order to be more successful, Heller should
have focused on making his main point clear. This failure is to focus on the main idea and instead
look at love so deeply is perhaps why some people consider his use of erotic material to prop up his

Essay on Prohibition in 20th Century America Prohibition in 20th Century America In the early part of the 20th century some people had had enough of liquor and its deleterious effects on people and their behavior. Some believed that alcohol, and drunkenness were the most worrying afflictions that our nation faced. At least on the surface this was what prohibition was about. On the flip side, it seemed that prohibition was about a still dominant, overwhelmingly rural, white Anglo Saxon Protestant establishment, aware that its privileges and natural right to rule were being increasingly threatened by the massive arrival of largely despised (and feared) beer swilling, wine drinking new American immigrants (Behr, 1996). Many of the Americans had descended from Protestant, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many of these believers were fanatical in their beliefs and in the delivery and spread of their message. Little by little the movements gained a stronger and stronger following of those who believed that alcohol and its consumption were rotting away the moral integrity, health, and overall foundation of American society. One of the largest constituents of this group was women. Women became so fixated on this cause that they made it into the first women s mass movement in American history...[and] also the modern world s first large scale, nonviolent protest movement (Behr, 1996). These women used their determination and a strict sense of religious morality to spread their message and to gain a large audience as their efforts became increasingly covered in the increasingly important newspapers. Prohibition was enacted as the 18th amendment to the Constitution. The bill, known as the Volstead Act, after Andrew J. Volstead, a Republican congressman from the state of Minnesota, was introduced on the 27th of May, 1919. After three months of debate the bill was passed by a vote of 255 to 166. On the 5th of September the Senate voted and passed the bill too. It was then made official after a final vote in the House of 321 to 70, and so was made law on October 10th (Behr, 1996). The law made sure that alcohol was not easy to lay hands on. All advertising was banned along with the consumption and production of alcohol itself. Also any equipment ... I always loved learning, I loved the national geographic and discovery channels and reading articles, but I hated school with a passion. I despised getting up and in kindergarden I actually stabbed my mom in the hand with a pencil in protest of writing my letters. I believe that s when a lot of things clicked, at least on my moms end. A lot of parents would have forced their kids to do well in schoolmine, never did. I couldn t thank them enough for it. Elementary school was miserable for me, not a lot of friends and I was no teachers pet. I showed little to no interest in what my teachers had to say. From kindergarten to sixth grade my teachers told my mom I wouldn t make it. Not in middle school, and high school, probably shouldn t count on that either. Year after year my mom took this verbal beating from my teachers saying she should be doing more , there s something wrong with me all my teachers suggested my mom get me tested for ADD and ADHD my mom put it off until fourth grade when I got written up for writing I hate school and I hate my teacher. she took me in to get tested but to everyone s surprise I did not have ADD or ADHD. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It s important for an innovation system that knowledge can diffuse from one company to another, especially in a heterogeneous context. It can be measured by number of workshops, conferences and mapping size of the network. Guidance of the search Due to limited resources, companies have to choose what they want to develop and investigate. The things they choose are the things of which they think it can positively change their processes. This function can be measured by mapping the specific targets of firms, companies and governments. Market formation It s almost impossible for new technologies to compete directly from the beginning with incumbent technologies. Therefore these new technologies need niche markets or (governmental) subsidies to exist. This function can be measured by the number of niche markets and the number of subsidies. Resource mobilization There are financial and human inputs necessary to make the other functions working properly. It is hard to measure this function, the best way is to interview different actors and institutions. Creation of legitimacy/counteract resistance to change Often when there is a new technologie an old one has to be overthrown. This can be measured by mapping the growth and lobby actions of investment groups. According to Porter there are 4 determinants to indicate whether there is competitive advantage in an innovation system. The 4 determinants are: 1.

  • 7. Sacrifice Of Iphigenia Essay Sacrifice is a common theme in Greek Mythology. Sometimes a sacrifice is made for the greater good of a situation, and sometimes the sacrifice is a person. In one myth, a girl named Iphigenia is sacrificed to gain better results for the Trojan army. She is sacrificed on a public altar and even her father is willing to sacrificeher to benefit his soldiers. In The Sacrifice of Iphigenia, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo shows that as long as nothing happens to them, people do not care what happens to others, while Iphigenia by Alfred Lord Tennyson shows that death is a hard, terrible, and painful event. The Sacrifice of Iphigenia has a tone of misfortune. Iphigenia is best known as the daughter of Agamemnon who is the leader of Troy s Greek forces. Agamemnon aggravated Artemis, the god of the hunt, by boasting about his hunting skills. Agamemnon also kills one of Artemis sacred hares. In the poem, it is a look at the situation from one person s point of view, and it makes you feel more for Iphigenia. In the painting, there are lots of people standing around watching the sacrifice, and it makes you feel aggravated and disgusted that people would be there just to watch. There are two ways of growing a company that is organic and in organic. Organic growth is when expanding the business by natural way such as making profit and opening branches and hiring more staff. On the other hand when a business is growing inorganically, is when a company buys majority shares of another similar company or purchasing the entire company and operates as its own. Example of an organic growth of a company would be MacDonald fast food chain. This company started from the scratch and expands its business within the region and expands overseas. ( Mayer and McDonald, 2007, 117). Fatal Attraction (1987) boasts high conventions of the film noir genre, such as the trait of the virtuous redeemer vs. the femme fatal. In fatal attraction there is a strong contrast between the two characters of the femme fatal (Alex) and the virtuous redeemer (Beth), as Alex is blonde, single career guided, a devilish diva and is portrayed as Dan s equal (Beth s husband) due to the clothing, masculine name and camera angles. Alex the femme fatal conveys classic characteristic femme fatal traits as she is childless, dangerous, and seductive and also challenges family and social order. Beth is then seen as boring, childbearing and innocent. These traits all lead to the weakness of the typical noir male character where he sleeps with the femme fatal. The newspaper article was very reliable especially since it was published the day after the explosion. It had a lot of the emotions felt during that time period. Unfortunately, the newspaper was not able to provide a definite answer as to why the crash was caused because the cause was not for sure then. • 25. Lyrical Ballads Captures The Hour of Feeling Essay Lyrical Ballads were written in a time of great change. They were dominated by the French Revolution and both Wordsworth and Coleridge felt great impact from this. There was disruption all over with the American War of Independence and other wars worldwide. Britain itself was changing rapidly due to colonial expansion, which brought new wealth, ideas and fashion, and there was much disturbance to both the people and the land with the act of enclosure, which may have meant more effective farming but less work. The introduction of the Poor Laws meant that landowners paid their remaining staff very little knowing that they would be supplemented by poor relief. However the conditions stated by the Laws before aid would be given were very... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The middle of the eighteenth century was the height of what became known as the ?Age of Reason?, where people believed that thoughts and actions should be based on the material world. This supported John Locke?s theories that a populace could legitimately revolt against a tyrannical government. This would have greatly appealed to British people at a time where the government has become increasingly oppressive due to their fear of an uprising. The desire for stability was shown in the Church. However this gave many people more reason to feel the need for change as it said that salvation lay in duty and obedience and that children were merely blank pages to be educated and therefore gain decency and social responsibility. Dreams and imagination were distrusted and discouraged. Lyrical Ballads broke through all this, encouraging imagination and telling us to learn from the simplicity of children, therefore appealing to many people. The 1780?s saw lots of inspired political and social movements with people hoping to rid the world of slavery, promote women?s rights, protect workers, increase suffrage, promote tolerance and greater sexual freedom. Many of these issues are present in Lyrical Ballads. ?Mad Mother?, ?The Thorn?, ?The Female Vagrant? and ?The Forsaken Indian Woman? all call for better rights for women as it was society that really caused their suffering in these poems. By the end of this war 17 million people would be killed. Lots of people have the impression that the cause of the war is a whole list of things. And that may be true but, while researching this topic I found that the most important factors to the war were the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, defense alliances, and imperialism. If these incidents had never occurred this war could have been avoided. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the main cause of the war. It was the leading factor to all the other causes such as imperialism and the defense alliances. It all started when Austria Hungary blamed Serbia for the assassination of the Archduke. Austria Hungary declared war on Serbia, Russia then got involved to defend Serbia. Germany seeing Russia mobilizing, declared war on Russia to protect their ally. France was then drawn in against Germany and Austria Hungary. Germany attacked France through Belgium pulling Britain into the war. Japan then entered the war. Voltaire s satire of philosophical optimism is one of the major issues of Candide. Throughout the story, satirical references to the best of all possible worlds contrast with natural catastrophes and human wrongdoing. According to Wikipedia, optimism, the opposite of pessimism, is a lifeview where the world is looked upon the as a positive place. Optimists generally believe that people are inherently good. This is true in a optimistic society According to SparkNotes.com: Pangloss and his student Candide maintain that everything is for the best in this best of all possible worlds. This idea is a reductively simplified version of the philosophies of a number of Enlightenment thinkers, most notably Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz. To these thinkers, the existence of any evil in the world would have to be a sign that God is either not entirely good or not all powerful, and the idea of an imperfect God is nonsensical. These philosophers took for granted that God exists, and concluded that since God must be perfect, the world he created must be perfect also. According to these philosophers, people perceive imperfections in the world only because they do not understand God s grand plan. Because Voltaire does not accept that a perfect God (or any God) has to exist, he can afford to mock the idea that the world must be completely good, and he heaps merciless satire on this idea throughout the novel. The optimists, Pangloss and Candide, suffer and witness a wide variety of horrorsВ—floggings, rapes, robberies, unjust executions, disease, an earthquake, betrayals, and crushing ennui. These horrors do not serve any apparent greater good, but point only to the cruelty and folly of humanity and the indifference of the natural world. • 34. The Purpose Of Equality In Langston Hughes s Democracy The equality in our world is not working, we always try to make it equal for every and each person, but as we can see it still unequal. The Langston Hughes in his poem Democracy trying to say that everyone is equal in this world and everyone should have equal laws. The poem has written when African Americans were getting to slavery and he was trying to make the world equal for everyone. A lot of us would ask, why did this happen? what was the purpose? it doesn t have any explanation or any right. We all are living in this land and we would make it equal for everyone and does not let things go as they wantto. We are the one who should make this world equal for everyone. The world itself is unequal so people should try to make the communities equal to balance this. As Langston Hughes says in his poem Democracy , I have as much right / As the other fellow has / To stand / On my two feet / And own the land. (line 5 9) In this stanza the writer uses simile to explain that he is equal to everyone in this world and he can be a president, he can be an athlete, and we should not make a difference based on people s religion, or nationality, or language, and everyone is the same. The world is divided into two parts people who want to change something and people who just say let things happen. So our future is under the question, and we would not know how a thing can turn good to bad or bad to good. Hughes was the one who wanted to change the world, to make it equal, and as we can see in his poem Democracy , I tire of hearing people say, / Let things take their course. / Tomorrow is another day. / I do not needmy freedom when I m dead. He was telling us that people should not wait for something to happen because it might not happen in your lifetime, so why not try while you have the opportunity to. People around him was telling him to wait to let things go, and he was not angry because his idea was that we don t know what would happen tomorrow, so we need to do it today. So overall he was trying to make a change make the world equal in his lifetime, and be an owner in this land. Some scholars separate Buddhist schools into geographical groupings, such as Southern, Eastern and Northern traditions, whereas some prefer to focus on a more tradition specific delineation, such as Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana Buddhism(Cousins 1998, p. 370; Buddhism 2015 ). All traditions accept the fundamental Buddhist doctines of Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, anatta (absence of soul) and karma (causation), but differ on other significant aspects. This essay will compare and contrast two Buddhist traditions, the Therevada Buddhism of Sri Lanka, and Mahayana Buddhism of China. Theravada Buddhism can also be characterised as representative of the Southern tradition of Buddhism, whereas Mahayana is of the Eastern tradition. This essay will also address how these particular types of Buddhism developed in their respective countries. Prior to the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka in 247 BCE, the cultural environment was characterised by a mix of indigenous (veddha) and Aryan beliefs, influenced by elements of mainland Indian culture (Perera 2013). The no kill movement started when Richard Avanizo took over the San Francisco SPCA in April 1976. During this time, humane societies and SPCA s followed the tenets being promoted by the Animal Humane Society in which they were required to kill the bulk of animals in their care due to the large amount of animals, and limited number of homes but later, Avanzino forced a reluctant animal control director to sign a memorandum of understanding between the two agencies that guaranteed a home for every healthy dog and cat in San Francisco (Redemption 37). Laney High School in Augusta, Georgia, in which all students enrolled in the course have to be proficient in all areas of the curriculum. The researcher has observed very little higher order/critical thinking and problem solving and low motivation/morale which may impact student performance in the math course. After a year of intense coursework, including real world application practice, and many short answer and multiple choice assessments, students show minimum performance on an accelerated curriculum provided to them. This challenges the instructional efforts of the teacher to increase the performance and promote higher order thinking in the math class. Therefore the purpose for this study is to determine if cooperative learning impacts higher order/critical thinking skills and student achievement. Review of the Literature Cooperative learning is one of the best studied academic strategies in the history of educational research, with over 1,000 research studies on the subject dating as far back as 1898 (Stanne, Johnson Johnson, 1999).
