In this HKUST IEMS Academic Seminar, Xiaogang Wu, Professor of Social Science nd the Director of the Center for Applied Social and Economic Research (CASER), discusses how “hukou”, China’s household registration system, contributes to the earings disparities between rural migrants and local workers in urban China.
Analyses of the data from the population mini-census of China in 2005 show that, rural migrants’ earnings disadvantages are largely attributable to occupational segregation based on workers’ hukou status, and the hukou-based occupational segregation pattern varies by employment sectors. Rural migrants who work in governmental agencies or state institutions earn less than their urban counterparts whereas those who work in public or private enterprises earn higher hourly wages. His findings shed new lights on how government policies lead to occupational segregation and create inequality among different social groups in urban China.

Push factors like low agricultural productivity and pull factors like access to jobs and services encourage migration from rural to urban areas. This migration has wide-ranging social, economic, political, and environmental effects at individual, family, community, and national levels. Socially, it can cause isolation and stress for migrants while increasing ethnic tensions in cities. Economically, it grows GDP but also increases poverty as migrants struggle in cities. Politically, it shifts power dynamics and resources. Environmentally, it places stress on urban infrastructure and increases pollution.

However, much of this urban growth may be "false urbanization" as many migrants do not have formal jobs and survive through informal economic activities.

Can Rural Leaders Play a Role?
This document summarizes a pilot program that engaged rural community members in Pakistan in evidence generation and discussion to inform local policies. Over 800 individuals participated in initial Community Circles. 37 participants were then selected as mentees to conduct research on prioritized issues. Key findings from the research were then shared back in the communities to facilitate discussion on causes and solutions. Next steps proposed expanding the open forum approach and having mentees independently lead Community Circles to share research findings in their areas. The goal is to bridge the gap between evidence, policies and communities to better reflect local contexts and priorities.
The Hidden Economic Backbone - Women in Agriculture
This document summarizes a study on women's work in agriculture in Pakistan. The study found that national data sources significantly undercount women's agricultural work. Through a survey of over 1,000 women, the study found that three-quarters reported having worked in the last year, with two-thirds doing agricultural work. Women reported doing tasks like cotton picking, weeding, harvesting grains and vegetables, and caring for livestock. Poorer women and those with less education were more likely to work, especially in agriculture. While work was often due to household needs or income, livestock work in particular was seen more as a responsibility. The Building Blocks of QuestDB, a Time Series Database

Traditionally, databases have treated timestamps just as another data type. However, when performing real-time analytics, timestamps should be first class citizens and we need rich time semantics to get the most out of our data. We also need to deal with ever growing datasets while keeping performant, which is as fun as it sounds.
It is no wonder time-series databases are now more popular than ever before. Join me in this session to learn about the internal architecture and building blocks of QuestDB, an open source time-series database designed for speed. We will also review a history of some of the changes we have gone over the past two years to deal with late and unordered data, non-blocking writes, read-replicas, or faster batch ingestion.
