This document summarizes a study on the effect of adding lime and coir fibers to black cotton soil from Kadukotthana Halli, Malavalli, India. Index properties, compaction characteristics, and unconfined compressive strength of the soil were tested with different percentages of lime added. The results showed that adding 2-4% lime increased the specific gravity, liquid limit, plastic limit, maximum dry density, and unconfined compressive strength compared to the black cotton soil alone. Above 4% lime addition, the properties either decreased or showed no further improvement. Therefore, 4% lime addition was determined to be the optimum amount to improve the geotechnical properties of the black cotton soil.

Effects of coconut fibers on the properties of concreteeSAT Journals
Abstract
The materials chosen for structural up gradation should not pollute the environment and endanger bioreserves. They should be accessible to the ordinary people and be low in monetary cost. Coconut fiber is an abundant, versatile, renewable, cheap, lignocellulosic fiber and more resistant to thermal conductivity. The aim of investigation is to study the possibilities to use the coconut fiber in addition to the other constituents of concrete and to study the strength properties. A literature survey was carried out, which indicates that the detailed investigation of coconut fiber concrete is necessary. In the present study the deformation properties of concrete beams with fibers under static loading condition and the behavior of structural components in terms of compressive strength for plain concrete(PC) and coconut fiber reinforced concrete(CFRC) has been studied.
The testing of various material constituents of concrete was carried out according to the Indian Standard specifications. To identify the effects on workability and mechanical strength properties due to the addition of these coconut fibres, workability tests such slump, vee – bee, compaction factor test, Flow table tests, and the mechanical strength tests on standard specimens such as compressive strength, split tensile strength, modulus of rupture were conducted on the different aspect ratio. The standard cubes, cylinders and beams for conventional concrete and coconut fiber reinforced concrete were prepared and tested under compression testing machine and flexure testing machine respectively. The suitability of CFRC as a structural material is studied, in comparison with conventional concrete.

Mechanical properties of rice husk flour reinforced epoxy bio-compositeIJERA Editor
A bio-composite reinforced with rice husk flour in epoxy resin has been developed. The effect of fibre treatment and weight percentage of rice husk on the mechanical properties was studied and compared with wood dust reinforced epoxy composite. It was observed that addition of rice husk as filler is detrimental to almost all the mechanical properties. About 51% and 26.8% decrease in ultimate strength and Young’s Modulus for 40 wt% untreated rice husk reinforcement was observed. The corresponding decrease in flexural strength and flexural modulus was 51%. Similar trend was also observed in hardness and impact strength. However the mechanical properties of rice husk reinforced biocomposites are found to be superior than wood dust reinforced epoxy composite. SEM microscopy was also done to corroborate the results.

Improvement in Properties of Black Cotton Soil with an Addition of Natural Fi...IJERA Editor
Improvement of soil in foundation is a major challenge in civil engineering. Structures built on black cotton soil may be damaged due to high swelling and shrinkage characteristics of this soil with variation of water content. Black cotton soil is an expansive soil which loses its strength in presence of water. On the other hand, it has behavior of shrinkage when loss of moisture is there. About 20 % of land area in India is covered by black cotton soil. Because of its swelling & shrinkage properties, it is also called expansive soil. The present paper is an attempt to study the effectiveness of coconut fiber (coir) to control swelling properties of black cotton soil along with an impact on its strength characteristics and dry density. The test results show that in presence of 2% coir fibre, the shrinkage limit is increases by 7.52% to 12.62%. Increase in compressive strength was observed from1.09 to1.32 kg per sq-cm.

Influence of untreated and treated coir pith on compaction and strength chara...eSAT Journals
Abstract Scarcity of land has led to the improvement of ground by stabilisation so as to utilize the available land, which was once considered unsuitable for construction activities. Many studies have been carried out to improve the ground using natural and synthetic fibres. Industrial and agricultural wastes are used to stabilise the soil as they are easily available and cheap. This can reduce the pollution due to disposal of such wastes. In this study, coir pith is used to stabilise the soil. This paper studies the effect of untreated and untreated coir pith on the compaction and the shear strength characteristics of the soil mixed with coir pith in varying percentages of 0% to 3% with an increment of 0.5%. A slight reduction in the dry density was observed with increase in percentage of coir pith. Whereas the treated coir pith soil mix shows increase in dry density as the pith content increases. It was observed that the optimum moisture content increases with increase in percentage of coir pith till 2% and thereafter decreases. For treated pith-soil mix, OMC decreases at first and then increases. A considerable increase in shear strength was observed after the chemical treatment of coir pith. THE ENGINEERING CHARACTERISTICS OF BLACK COTTON SOIL TREATED WITH CORN STRAW ASHEditorIJAERD
Black cotton soils (BCS) are found in extensive quantities in the North – East region of Nigeria specifically in
the northern parts of Adamawa State and southern parts of Borno State. This soil expands while it gets wet and shrinks as the
water dries out. On account of this high volumetric changes they are not directly suitable for construction. The excessive
swelling and shrinkage are sequel to the presence of fine particles of clay. Swelling and shrinkage of soil often results in
differential settlement of the structure. Black cotton soils must therefore be treated by using suitable admixtures to stabilize it
for use in civil engineering works. In this research work, stabilization of black cotton soil is done by using Corn Straw Ash
(CSA) as an admixture. The CSA reacts with clay particles from the black cotton soil to form a material of higher strength.
The physical and chemical properties of the soil were obtained. Other tests such Atterberg’s limits, California Bearing
Ratio(CBR), Unconfined Compressive Strength(UCS) were carried out at different percentage contents of CSA: at 0%, 4%,
6%, 8% and 10%. From the test results, it is observed that optimum value of CBR and UCS are at 8% of the ash. At this
percentage of the additive the following improvement occurred in the black cotton soil; CBR improved from 4.5% to 11.3%,
UCS 107.5KN/m2
to 140.5KN/m2
and plasticity index decreased from 24% to 11.2%. It is concluded that CSA has a great
potential in the improvement of the mechanical properties of black cotton soil.

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!
