Black cotton soils (BCS) are found in extensive quantities in the North – East region of Nigeria specifically in
the northern parts of Adamawa State and southern parts of Borno State. This soil expands while it gets wet and shrinks as the
water dries out. On account of this high volumetric changes they are not directly suitable for construction. The excessive
swelling and shrinkage are sequel to the presence of fine particles of clay. Swelling and shrinkage of soil often results in
differential settlement of the structure. Black cotton soils must therefore be treated by using suitable admixtures to stabilize it
for use in civil engineering works. In this research work, stabilization of black cotton soil is done by using Corn Straw Ash
(CSA) as an admixture. The CSA reacts with clay particles from the black cotton soil to form a material of higher strength.
The physical and chemical properties of the soil were obtained. Other tests such Atterberg’s limits, California Bearing
Ratio(CBR), Unconfined Compressive Strength(UCS) were carried out at different percentage contents of CSA: at 0%, 4%,
6%, 8% and 10%. From the test results, it is observed that optimum value of CBR and UCS are at 8% of the ash. At this
percentage of the additive the following improvement occurred in the black cotton soil; CBR improved from 4.5% to 11.3%,
UCS 107.5KN/m2
to 140.5KN/m2
and plasticity index decreased from 24% to 11.2%. It is concluded that CSA has a great
potential in the improvement of the mechanical properties of black cotton soil.

Stabilization Analysis of Black Cotton Soil by using Groundnut Shell AshKrunal Thanki
Black Cotton soil is fertile and very good for agriculture, horticulture, sericulture and aquaculture. Though black cotton soils are very good for agricultural purposes, they are not so good for laying durable roads.The study is a potential stabilization of black cotton soils in Gujarat state using Groundnut Shell ash. Index properties of the natural soil showed that, the soil is a poor for engineering use. Liquid limit and Plasticity index values of 83.36 % and 89.32 % respectively for the natural soil suggest that the soil is highly plastic. There was gradual decrease in the free swell to a minimum value of 2.91% at 10% GSA (Groundnut Shell Ash) as compared to the natural value of 15.25%. The soaked CBR for the natural soil is 1.67% which increased to 2.17% at 10% GSA. This value fell short of specification requirement of the CBR value to be used as sub-base or base material. However, there was increase in strength for UCS of 21 days curing period from a value of 134kN/m2 as compared to 313kN/m2 for the unstabilized soil. This research is aimed at evaluating the possibility of utilizing groundnut shell ash (GSA) in the stabilization of black cotton soils.
Black cotton soils are among a group of soils termed as problematic soils. These soils have
undesirable characteristics in relation to construction works and therefore need some form of improvement
when encountered in construction projects. Techniques for improvement of black cotton soils include
replacement, moisture control or adding a stabilizer. Cement and/or lime has been commonly used in soil
stabilization for ages. However, due to the associated cost, required quality control and the need to utilize waste
materials in construction, new stabilizing materials are emerging. This paper presents a study on application of
quarry dust for improving properties of black cotton soil in Mbeya region, Tanzania. The targeted improvement
was to achieve minimum acceptable characteristics for road subgrade as per Tanzania standards. It was
determined that 40% by weight of quarry dust added to the black cotton soil was able to improve the
characteristics by increasing CBR value from 3.8 to 15.7 and reducing PI from 32% to 15%. It will be worthy
studying the cost implication of the suggested improvement in relation to other techniques before application of
the study findings.

Bricks also have been regarded as one of the long lasting and strongest building material used throughout
history. Ordinary building blocks are made of a mixture of clay, which is subjected to various processes, different
according to the nature of the material, after being properly prepared the clay is formed in moulds to the desired
shape, then dried and burnt. The providing affordable housing is a challenge around the world, especially in
developing countries. The impediments to solving the housing problem are scarcity of land and high cost of building
materials. Furthermore, such materials must be abundantly available and renewable in nature. Local soil has always
been the most widely used material for earthen construction. The main objective of this investigation had been
focused on the improvement of the compressive strength of the black cotton soil blocks with different content of lime
by reinforcing the geo-grid. The rectangular (200mm × 100mm × 100mm) blocks are prepared with soil treated with
5%, 10% and 15% lime with the geo-grid reinforcement at the middle depth of the blocks, the compressive strength of
the bricks is obtained by laboratory compression test apparatus the results obtained are compared with unreinforced samples.

Due to rapid increase in the world’s population there is increased demand for food, and this has resulted in the production of different types of crops and consequently large amounts of agricultural wastes are generated. Hence it is necessary to dispose these agricultural wastes safely on to the environment. On other hand BC soils expands and contracts due to changes in the moisture content of the soil, causing structural problems through differential movement of the structure. This isolated movement of sections of the structure can cause damage to building foundations and cracking in the exterior or interior wall covering leads to uneven floors etc. Also cause severe cracking in pavements, swimming pools, pipelines, sidewalks, highways etc. Hence there is need to stabilize expansive soil. From these discussion we should find out the solution for the above two problems. After studying several research papers it is concluded that agricultural wastes can be used effectively in stabilization of BC soils. This project presents stabilization of BC soils using groundnut shell ash since its production increased to large extent. On addition of groundnut shell ash in increment of 15% from 0to 60% to BC soils different experiments on plasticity characteristics, compaction characteristics, shear strength characteristics are conducted .And found gradual improvement in geotechnical properties of black cotton soils.

This behavior of soil is attributed to the presence of mineral Montmorillonite which has expanding lattice; Expansive soils because of their specific physical & chemical make are subjected to volume changes. In many countries including India, these soils are so extensive that alteration of highway route to avoid the material is virtually impossible. Various remedial measures like soil replacement, prewetting, moisture control, lime stabilization etc have been practiced with varied degree of success. Extensive research is going on to find the solutions to black cotton soils. Recent investigations on chemical stabilization revealed that strong electrolytes like potassium chloride, Ferric chloride can be used in place of conventionally used lime due to their ready dissolvability in water and supply of adequate cations for ready cation exchange. In the present work experimentation is carried out to investigate efficacy of ferric chloride and fly ash in improving the properties of black cotton soil.

Utilization of Bamboo Fibers for Modification of Black Cotton Soil Propertiesijtsrd
Soil stabilization is the process which involves enhancing the physical properties of the soil in order to improve its strength, durability etc. by blending or mixing with additives. The different types of method used for soil stabilization are Soil stabilization with cement, Soil stabilization with lime, Soil stabilization using bitumen, Chemical stabilization and a new emerging technology of stabilization by Geo textiles and Geo synthetic fibers. In this study, we are making use of bamboo fibers as geo synthetic material for stabilization of soil. With the introduction of bamboo fibers to the soil the CBR values will improve and thickness of pavement layer also gets reduced. It also reduces the intensity of stress on subgrade. Bamboo fibers is such a geosynthetic material which is easily available, ecofriendly and also cost effective. With the application of soil stabilization method in construction the overall cost gets reduced when compared to the ordinary method of construction. The Highway Research Board HRB classification of the soil strata like black cotton soil and sedu soil is done using suitable sampling technique such as Core Cutter Method. To determine the characteristics like Grading by Sieve Analysis, Atterbergs Limits i.e Liquid limit using Cone Penetration Method and Casagrande Method, Plastic limit by rolling the sample to 3mm diameter thread, Shrinkage limit using Shrinkage apparatus, Optimum Moisture Content and Maximum Dry Density using Standard Proctor Test and also California Bearing Ratio by conducting CBR test. The pavement thickness was designed using pavement design catalogues published by IRC SP 20 2002. GGBS are added from 0% to 40% by dry weight of soil, first of all check the all
soil property at 0 % (no GGBS) and then compare after addition of GGBS from 10% to 40%. On
the basis of Standard Proctor test & Unconfined Compressive Strength test the optimum
percentage of GGBS is 10%. Investigations showed that generally the engineering properties
which improved with the addition of GGBS. The California bearing ratio of soil increases as the
percentage of GGBS replaced in increase.
Soil is a peculiar material. Some waste materials such Fly Ash, rice husk ash, pond ash may use to
make the soil to be stable. Addition of such materials will increase the physical as well as chemical properties of
the soil. Some expecting properties to be improved are CBR value, shear strength, liquidity index, plasticity
index, unconfined compressive strength and bearing capacity etc. The objective of this study was to evaluate the
effect of Fly Ash derived from combustion of sub-bituminous coal at electric power plants in stabilization of soft
fine-grained red soils. California bearing ratio (CBR) and other strength property tests were conducted on soil.
The soil is in range of plasticity, with plasticity indices ranging between 25 and 30. Tests were conducted on
soils and soil–Fly Ash mixtures prepared at optimum water content of 9% .Addition of Fly Ash resulted in
appreciable increases in the CBR of the soil. For water contents 9% wet of optimum, CBRs of the soils are
found in varying percentage such that 3,5,6and 9.We will found optimum CBR value of the soil is 6%.Increment
of CBR value is used to reduce the thickness of the pavement. And increasing the bearing capacity of soil.
Soil Stabilization using Fly Ash and Cotton Fiberijtsrd
Mixing of fiber for ground improvement has been practiced for recent years. Many researches has shown the expected results. This paper mainly deals with the ground improvement technique using both Fly Ash and cotton fiber. The combination of them gives a satisfactory value of its practical application. Both Fly Ash and Cotton fiber are treated as waste materials in our country in spite of having its engineering significances. Here all the tests were performed accepting the Fly Ash percent is 10 for maximum bearing capacity of soil. Three types of sample were prepared as per 0.3%, 0.5%, 0.7% of cotton fiber. For instances, it deliberately increases the Dry Density of soil up to 48.05 KN/m3 where as normal unreinforced soil sample gives about 22 KN/m3. The Ultimate bearing capacity increases up to 80.65 Kpa whereas the unreinforced soil sample gives for 35 Kpa. The result of California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test gives desired value (23%) than unreinforced soil (17%). The CBR test is performed only for 0.7% of cotton fiber where maximum stress is found. The most significant part in this study is to show the variation on cotton fiber for ground improvement technique at different ratio. This paper shows the gradual increase in Deviator stress for UCS tests for the increase in the percent of cotton fiber mixing with Fly Ash. This research may meet the need of ground having low strength at important sites. Utilization of Bamboo Fibers for Modification of Black Cotton Soil Propertiesijtsrd
Soil stabilization is the process which involves enhancing the physical properties of the soil in order to improve its strength, durability etc. by blending or mixing with additives. The different types of method used for soil stabilization are Soil stabilization with cement, Soil stabilization with lime, Soil stabilization using bitumen, Chemical stabilization and a new emerging technology of stabilization by Geo textiles and Geo synthetic fibers. In this study, we are making use of bamboo fibers as geo synthetic material for stabilization of soil. With the introduction of bamboo fibers to the soil the CBR values will improve and thickness of pavement layer also gets reduced. It also reduces the intensity of stress on subgrade. Bamboo fibers is such a geosynthetic material which is easily available, ecofriendly and also cost effective. With the application of soil stabilization method in construction the overall cost gets reduced when compared to the ordinary method of construction. The Highway Research Board HRB classification of the soil strata like black cotton soil and sedu soil is done using suitable sampling technique such as Core Cutter Method. To determine the characteristics like Grading by Sieve Analysis, Atterbergs Limits i.e Liquid limit using Cone Penetration Method and Casagrande Method, Plastic limit by rolling the sample to 3mm diameter thread, Shrinkage limit using Shrinkage apparatus, Optimum Moisture Content and Maximum Dry Density using Standard Proctor Test and also California Bearing Ratio by conducting CBR test. The pavement thickness was designed using pavement design catalogues published by IRC SP 20 2002. The estimation for the street is finished by considering the thing, for example, Earthwork Excavation for Roadway and Drains, Jungle Cutting, compacting and reviewing and so forth., according to SR 2016 17, PW, P and IWT circle Andhra Pradesh and proposing of particulars for the blend of Bamboo strands as Geo Synthetic material for adjustment. GGBS are added from 0% to 40% by dry weight of soil, first of all check the all
soil property at 0 % (no GGBS) and then compare after addition of GGBS from 10% to 40%. On
the basis of Standard Proctor test & Unconfined Compressive Strength test the optimum
percentage of GGBS is 10%. Investigations showed that generally the engineering properties
which improved with the addition of GGBS. The California bearing ratio of soil increases as the
percentage of GGBS replaced in increase.
Soil is a peculiar material. Some waste materials such Fly Ash, rice husk ash, pond ash may use to
make the soil to be stable. Addition of such materials will increase the physical as well as chemical properties of
the soil. Some expecting properties to be improved are CBR value, shear strength, liquidity index, plasticity
index, unconfined compressive strength and bearing capacity etc. The objective of this study was to evaluate the
effect of Fly Ash derived from combustion of sub-bituminous coal at electric power plants in stabilization of soft
fine-grained red soils. California bearing ratio (CBR) and other strength property tests were conducted on soil.
The soil is in range of plasticity, with plasticity indices ranging between 25 and 30. Tests were conducted on
soils and soil–Fly Ash mixtures prepared at optimum water content of 9% .Addition of Fly Ash resulted in
appreciable increases in the CBR of the soil. For water contents 9% wet of optimum, CBRs of the soils are
found in varying percentage such that 3,5,6and 9.We will found optimum CBR value of the soil is 6%.Increment
of CBR value is used to reduce the thickness of the pavement. And increasing the bearing capacity of soil.
Soil Stabilization using Fly Ash and Cotton Fiberijtsrd
Mixing of fiber for ground improvement has been practiced for recent years. Many researches has shown the expected results. This paper mainly deals with the ground improvement technique using both Fly Ash and cotton fiber. The combination of them gives a satisfactory value of its practical application. Both Fly Ash and Cotton fiber are treated as waste materials in our country in spite of having its engineering significances. Here all the tests were performed accepting the Fly Ash percent is 10 for maximum bearing capacity of soil. Three types of sample were prepared as per 0.3%, 0.5%, 0.7% of cotton fiber. For instances, it deliberately increases the Dry Density of soil up to 48.05 KN/m3 where as normal unreinforced soil sample gives about 22 KN/m3. The Ultimate bearing capacity increases up to 80.65 Kpa whereas the unreinforced soil sample gives for 35 Kpa. The result of California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test gives desired value (23%) than unreinforced soil (17%). The CBR test is performed only for 0.7% of cotton fiber where maximum stress is found. The most significant part in this study is to show the variation on cotton fiber for ground improvement technique at different ratio. This paper shows the gradual increase in Deviator stress for UCS tests for the increase in the percent of cotton fiber mixing with Fly Ash. This research may meet the need of ground having low strength at important sites. Improvement in Properties of Black Cotton Soil with an Addition of Natural Fi...IJERA Editor
Improvement of soil in foundation is a major challenge in civil engineering. Structures built on black cotton soil may be damaged due to high swelling and shrinkage characteristics of this soil with variation of water content. Black cotton soil is an expansive soil which loses its strength in presence of water. On the other hand, it has behavior of shrinkage when loss of moisture is there. About 20 % of land area in India is covered by black cotton soil. Because of its swelling & shrinkage properties, it is also called expansive soil. The present paper is an attempt to study the effectiveness of coconut fiber (coir) to control swelling properties of black cotton soil along with an impact on its strength characteristics and dry density. The test results show that in presence of 2% coir fibre, the shrinkage limit is increases by 7.52% to 12.62%. Increase in compressive strength was observed from1.09 to1.32 kg per sq-cm.
Stabilization of Expansive Soil Subgrade Using Recycled Carpet Waste and Fly AshEditorIJAERD
The structure of asphalt pavements subjected to problems and collapse for many reasons one of them, when
pavement section built on swelling soil, which has volumetric change due to variation of water content, which results the
appearance of cracks collapse. For this reason, additives are used for treating expansive soil and increase its efficiency.
Polymers are one of many types of additives; there are two types of polymers natural and synthetic. Using carpet
disposal waste in soil stabilization is one of solutions for obtaining safer and harder pavements. In addition to using
carpet waste will benefit the community environmentally and economically. For achieve this purpose a series of
laboratory investigation were carried out to evaluate the effect of treating the subgrade with carpet waste. CBR tests
were conducted on treated and untreated soil at different carpet waste contents ranged from 0.5% to 2% at an increase
rat of 0.5%. The results of CBR tests showed that the CBR value for treated soil with 0.5% carpet waste increased about
14 times their untreated soil

Fly Ash generation and utilization both are expected to increase but the gap between them will also increase. Researchers are finding out new area for utilization of Fly Ash to minimize its environmental impact. One such area is Geotechnical Engineering. Black Cotton Soil is a problematic soil with respect to Soil-Structure interaction. In this paper, various properties of Black Cotton Soil like pH, plasticity index, volume change behavior and dry density are studied after mixing Fly Ash in different proportion and are presented. It can be concluded that 30% Fly Ash by weight mixed with Black Cotton soil gives optimum result for most of the properties.

logistic regression is applied during this work. The existing and proposed techniques are implemented in python and results
are analysed in terms of accuracy, execution time. The proposed approach has high accuracy and low execution time as

Drilling fluids play an important role in the successful drilling applications of oil and gas wells. This role of
drilling fluid in oil exploration and exploitation activities is similar to the blood circulation in the human body according to
the some researches. The most commonly used drilling fluids are water based fluids in the drilling applications. In this study,
to investigate the performance of the ester-based drilling fluid in application of shale occurrence drilling was aimed. This
study therefore was undertaken to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of shale occurrence on the rheological
properties of ester-based drilling fluid. The fluids used in this study were XB1000 refined from waste cooking oil as esterbased fluid and diesel oil refined from petroleum as oil-based fluid. Within this scope, experimental studies were conducted
to obtain some properties such as plastic viscosity, yield point, and gel strength. The results showed that plastic viscosity
increased as solid percentage increased in both samples and insignificant shale swelling between the two oil mud fluids
shows same tolerance level. Thus, the synthetic-based drilling fluids can be used as a suitable alternative to the oil-based
drilling fluids to curb environmental pollution.

continuous simulations. Models, especially continuous simulations are useful for future predictions of stream flow due to
land-use changes or extreme events phenomenon. In this study continuous hydrologic modellingwas carried out using
HEC HMS modelling tool.
Deficit and Constant Loss methods with Clark transform methods were selected. The calibrated model (period
1986-1988) was validated with data set of the period of 2009-2013. Study concluded that the model recommended and
can be used for stated River as decision support tool in the design and operation.

specimen having construction joint in column. Similarly the stiffness degradation decreases up to 50% due construction
joint. It was also observed that specimen having construction joint shows overall strength lost at 1.5% while specimen
having no construction joint was maintain their strength up to 3% drift.

others for which they do not pay rather the non-users pay for them in the form of hard cash, inconvenience and lack of
safety. This unwanted but widely practiced phenomena has over-shadowed the livable environment even in universities
all across Pakistan particularly in Peshawar university campus (case study) where the environment is exacerbated by
minimum personalized vehicle holders for the maximum non-car commuters resulting from the free vehicular entrance
and biased provision of infrastructure. This leads to huge social divide, inequality and gender disparity. In addition to
finding appropriate rent for provision of new equitable, environment and gender friendly modes of transport like rental
bikes and golf carts, Willingness to pay for congestion pricing as proposed solution is investigated through online webbased questionnaire survey from 580 respondents and statistical analysis is used for selecting most feasible mode(s) of
alternate in-campus transportation. Results showed that 67.6% respondents were WTP for congestion charging and
55.3% selected golf carts as their preferred mode in campus followed by rental bike with 27.6%. Appropriate rent chosen
for golf cart was PKR 20 and less than PKR 20 for rental bikes by more than half of the respondents. Congestion pricing
was perceived as effective solution and proposed modes were opted as the preferred modes for traveling in campus.

variables, while electromyography and HAV values were considered as dependent variables. The vibration level was

the grapes (Vitis vinifera) species which are a wonderful fruit having pulp content, vibrant color and exert an immense
health benefits. Grape fruits were found to be rich source of Anthocyanin content and vitamin C also macromolecules
contents such as carbohydrate contents of 29mg, Protein 18.7mg and fat content 3.7mg /100 g of f. wt. Micronutrients
were estimated by AAS which showed that calcium content was 3.1mg/g.f.wt, iron content 2.7 mg/g.f.wt, potassium 2.6
mg/g.f.wt found to be more than other minerals in fresh extracts of grape fruits. The comparative results of revealed
considerable amount of phytoconstituents in grape fruits in which anthocyanins alone has been taken to evaluate
therapeutic effects on breast cancer cell MCF-7 cell viability test was carried out to determine cell proliferation. The
results revealed presence of anthocyanins in high quantity in the process of purification through various biochemical
methods that could ultimately be used for preventing cancerous cell proliferation which reduces the development of

To fulfil human beings requirement number of industries increases day by day which play important role in
development of country but also causes environment pollution. Effluent of many industries contain heavy metals and
other contaminants. Industrial effluent usually used for agriculture purposes without treatment. Plants take these heavy
metals from industrial water and accumulate it in roots and Arial parts which become the part of animal and human
body through food chain causes various diseases. In this research work plants were grown using wastewater of industrial
effluents. Three sample of wastewater were made of various concentration level of lead, copper and cobalt. Typha
latifoliate was grown in controlled environment. Three sample of wastewater were used. Soil used in pots was of known
concentration of heavy metals. Using x-ray fluorescence spectrometry was used to find concentration of contaminants in
soil before and after plantation and atomic absorption spectrometry was used to find concentration of heavy metals in
industrial effluent. Wastewater of various concentration level was obtained by adding domestic water having no heavy
metals. Extraction percentage performed by plants in various lawn was found by analysis of soil before and after the
maturity of plants. soil which was irrigated by fully contaminated wastewater was remediated by 10%. Soil in which
plants were irrigated by diluted wastewater was remediated by 15 and 21% respectively for copper and cobalt. Plants
matured in seventy-five days in winter season.

ABSTRACT: Black cotton soils (BCS) are found in extensive quantities in the North – East region of Nigeria specifically in
the northern parts of Adamawa State and southern parts of Borno State. This soil expands while it gets wet and shrinks as the
water dries out. On account of this high volumetric changes they are not directly suitable for construction. The excessive
swelling and shrinkage are sequel to the presence of fine particles of clay. Swelling and shrinkage of soil often results in
differential settlement of the structure. Black cotton soils must therefore be treated by using suitable admixtures to stabilize it
for use in civil engineering works. In this research work, stabilization of black cotton soil is done by using Corn Straw Ash
(CSA) as an admixture. The CSA reacts with clay particles from the black cotton soil to form a material of higher strength.
The physical and chemical properties of the soil were obtained. Other tests such Atterberg’s limits, California Bearing
Ratio(CBR), Unconfined Compressive Strength(UCS) were carried out at different percentage contents of CSA: at 0%, 4%,
6%, 8% and 10%. From the test results, it is observed that optimum value of CBR and UCS are at 8% of the ash. At this
percentage of the additive the following improvement occurred in the black cotton soil; CBR improved from 4.5% to 11.3%,
UCS 107.5KN/m2
to 140.5KN/m2
and plasticity index decreased from 24% to 11.2%. It is concluded that CSA has a great
potential in the improvement of the mechanical properties of black cotton soil.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
The black cotton soil used in this study is a highly plastic clay that depicts high volumetric charges. It is known to be very
problematic for the construction of various infrastructures like dams, highway embankments, foundation backfill material in
building substructure, etc. Black cotton soils contain the Montmorillonite clay mineral: one alumina sheet is sandwiched
between two silica sheets. There exists a very weak bond between the sheets which causes the swelling in soil due to ease of
permeation of water through the weak bond. [1]
Expansive soils are those which swell in contact with moisture and shrinks on drying. This leads to cracking of structures
supported by them and therefore an increase in the cost of construction and maintenance. They create numerous problems in
the field of civil engineering while during design, construction and during the maintenance of various Civil Engineering
projects like Building foundations, Roads, Railways and Airport Runways. These swelling soils are commonly known by the
name of Black Cotton Soils. They are called black cotton soils because they are black in colour and are more suitable for
growing cotton. They give higher yield of cotton when compared to other types and colours of soils. The presence of clay in
these soils imparts them with high swell–shrink potentials. [2]

Barani [4] presented a study in engineering behavior of black cotton soil treated with Waste Paper Sludge Ash and concluded
that Stabilization of expansive soil using admixtures gives a good solution for the swelling and shrinkage issues. Elias [5],
presented the effect of waste paper sludge on plasticity, free swell index, compaction, unconfined compressive strength and
CBR in soft clayey soil. In his works compressive strength was increased by adding 5% WPS. The compressive increased by
65% (496KN/m2) at 7days and by 107.9% (590 KN/m2) at 28 days
Norazlan et.al [6], presented the effect of WPSA on unconfined compressive strength and California bearing ratio of sandy
clay soil. It is concluded that increase in WPSA content improves unconfined compressive strength content about 2 times by
the addition of 10% WPSA. The addition of 10% WPSA increased the CBR value by about 1.5 times in unsoaked condition
and 3.6 times in soaked condition, compared with untreated soil sample.
According Rahul et.al [7], the compressive strength and stability of the soil can be considerably improved by soil
stabilization through controlled compaction and addition of suitable admixture in some proportion. Lime and Sugarcane

Straw Ash were used as soil stabilization additives in their study. Lime is calcium oxide (CaO) or Hydroxide of Calcium and
Magnesium and is made by calcining Limestone into either calcite lime (High in Calcium) or Dolomite lime (High in
magnesium). According to them use of Lime in stabilization improves strength, resistance to fracture, fatigue and permanent
deformation. Sugarcane Straw Ash is a pozzolanic material which is very rich in oxides of silica, aluminum and sometimes
calcium.
Gupta et.al [1] presented black cotton soil modification by application of domestic waste material as per ASTM D1883-05
[8], California Bearing Ratio test for all optimum composites were conducted. The result showed that soaked and unsoaked
CBR values of virgin black cotton soil were 2.78% and 7.38%. When the soil was mixed with waste material at optimum
mixture it gave soaked and unsoaked CBR values of 8.04% and 14.75% respectively. Thus this application caused an
increase of CBR by 189.20% and 99.86% respectively.
Brajesh [3], presents a study on engineering behavior of black cotton soil and its stabilization by use of lime. On the basis of
this study and experimental investigations it was observed that the property of black cotton soil effectively improved by use
of different percentage of lime contents. In this research varying percentages of 3% and 5% of lime were used to stabilize the
black cotton soil. The following Points were drawn from this study: addition of 3% of lime decreases the liquid limit by
2.70% while addition of 5% lime reflects a decrease of 15.27%. The Maximum Dry Density (MDD) was increased slightly
by 6.29% and 5.59% at 3% and 5% lime content respectively. Decrease in Optimum Moisture Contents (OMC) of 3.4% and
10.7% were observed at 3% and at 5% lime content respectively. The C.B.R. value of black cotton soil improved
considerably by 325% and 476% with 3% and 5% lime respectively.
Nagaraju et.al [10] in their Experimental Investigation on Black Cotton Soil using Lime and Rice Husk Ash(RHA) observed
that the property of black cotton soil effectively improved by use of different percentages of lime with rice husk ash content.
In this study 5%,10% and 15% of RHA with 5% lime to stabilize the black cotton soil. Their findings were used were: liquid
limit values decreased from 59% to 28% by the addition of lime and RHA. This means that the properties change from highly
compressible to low compressibility, plasticity index values decreased from 30% to 5% on addition of lime and RHA. This
means that the plasticity of the material changed from very high to low. Free swell index values decreased. This implies that
swelling of the soil also decrease. Hence, it can be concluded from this investigation that the properties of black cotton soil
can be optimally improved by the addition of 5 percent lime and 10 per cent Rice husk ash.
2.0 MATERIALS AND METHOD.
2.1 Material
2.1.1 Corn straw Ash (CSA)
Corn straw ash was obtained from the burnt straw of maize after harvesting. The straw was gathered from a farm in Biu in
Borno state.

2.1.2 Expansive Clay Soil
The soil for the research was collected from Biu Town at 10.61º N and 12.19ºE. The sample was picked along the soil profile
at the depth of 1.2m to avoid the inclusion of organic matter. Preliminary checks indicated that the soil was greyish black in
colour and highly plastic in nature.

2.2 PREPARATIONN OF CORN STRAW ASH
Corn straw were transferred from Biu farm to the geotechnical laboratory belonging Federal Polytechnic Mubi. The straw
was burnt to ashes in an incinerator at 400oc
for the period of two hours and allowed to cool for three hours before being
packed for the experiment.
2.3 LABORATORY TEST CONDUCTED ON NATURAL SOIL AND STABILIZED SOIL
The black cotton soil used in this study was mixed with corn straw ash(CSA) in varying percentages 0%, 4%, 6%, 8%, 10%.
2.3.1 COMPACTION TEST. [14] Compaction tests were conducted in the laboratory on the corn straw ash mixed with black
cotton soil. The test was in accordance with AASHTO T99-97 to determine maximum dry density (MDD) and optimum
water content (OMC) of all composite were found out and was concluded in the Table 4.
2.3.2 UNCONFINED COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH TEST. As per ASTM D2166-13[15], unconfined compressive test for
all composite were conducted in the laboratory using a strain rate 1.2mm/minute and the result was concluded in Table 4.
2.3.3 CALIFORNIA BEARING RATIO (CBR). As per AASHTO T193-93[11], California bearing ratio test for all optimum
composite were conducted in the laboratory and the result was in Table 4.
2.3.4 ATTEBERG LIMITS. The test included the determination of the liquid limit, plastic limit and the plasticity index for
the natural soil and the soil- ash mixtures. The tests are conducted for uncured stabilized soil samples in accordance with
AASHTO T89-90 and T90-96 [17] testing procedures.

3.2 Determining the mechanical Properties
The research investigated the physical properties of clay which include the following; moisture content, dry density, Atteberg
limits.

4.1 California bearing ratio (CBR),
The addition of corn straw ash led to an increase of the CBR value. This shows that the load bearing capacity of the sample
increased considerably with corn straw ash treatment. Curing however has a significant effect on the CBR values. CBR
value increased from 4.2% to 11.3% with CSA at 4% to 8% respectively. And the CBR declined from 11.3% to 10.2% with
CSA at 8% to 10% respectively. The improvements in the CBR values satisfy the minimum requirements at 8% ash that
qualify them for backfill, embankments and subgrade materials. This increases were as a result of the formation of
cementitious compounds, calcium-silicate-hydrates (CSH) and Calcium- aluminate-hydrates (CAH), by calcium from CSA
and the readily available silica and alumina from both the soil and corn straw ash. CSH and CAH are cementitious products
similar to those formed in Portland cement. They form the matrix that contributes to the strength of stabilized soil layers.
This is attributed to the pozzolanic reaction between the soil and corn straw ash resulting in the formation of more
cementitious compounds.

4.2 UNCORNFINED COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH.
The UCS value of black cotton soil increases from 104 to 140.5kN/m2
with an increase of corn straw ash from 0% to 8%. The
optimum UCS is 140.5%KN/m2
obtain with 8% ash. The UCS start to decline after this, be coming 86KN/m2
at 10% ash.

4.3 VARIATION OF PLASTICITY INDEX WITH ADDITION OF DIFFERENT CORN STRAW ASH.
In general, the plasticity of the soil is decreases with the addition of CSA. This is clearly shown figure 6. These effects are
due to the partial replacement of plastic soil particles with corn straw ash which is non plastic material. Also, flocculation and
agglomeration of clay particles caused by cation exchange, occurs, hereby reducing the plasticity of the soil.

5.0 CONCLUSION
The following conclusions can be drawn from the results of the investigation carried out within the scope of this study.
1. The chemical analysis of corn straw ash indicated that the main elements are silica (66.23%), potassium (6.44%) iron
(3.09%), their combined percent composition is 75.76 %. The addition of these percentages is above 70 %, which
therefore satisfies ASTM C618 – 12 (ASTM 2012) specification for pozzolanic reaction [13].
2. The plasticity index reduced from 24.2% to 11.3% with increased in content of corn straw ash was satisfies compare with
the set standard by Road design manual part III CSA can be used for expansive clay soil stabilization.
3. California bearing ratio increased with increase of corn straw ash CSA. he CBR increase from 4% to 8%and decline from
8% to 10% of an ash.
4. The CBR value of black cotton soil was from 4.2% to 11.2%, the optimum content of ash being 8%. This values of CBR
satisfies the requirements for subgrade materials as specified by both American Association of State Highway and
transportation(AASTHO) and the Nigeria Highway Design Manual part III, Federal Ministry of Works and Housing.
5. An increase in CBR value will significantly reduce the total thickness of the designed pavement and reduce the cost of the
road project.
5.1 RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on the findings of this research, the following recommendations are made:
1. corn straw ash can be used as a soil stabilizing agent for black cotton soil at 8% ash ratio.
2. Further study should be done on corn straw ash as a soil stabilizing material on different types of soils.
3. Further study should be done using finely ground as stabilizer and the result compared with existing ones.
4. A composite additive consisting of CSA and another admixture is recommended for further study.
