Fly Ash generation and utilization both are expected to increase but the gap between them will also increase. Researchers are finding out new area for utilization of Fly Ash to minimize its environmental impact. One such area is Geotechnical Engineering. Black Cotton Soil is a problematic soil with respect to Soil-Structure interaction. In this paper, various properties of Black Cotton Soil like pH, plasticity index, volume change behavior and dry density are studied after mixing Fly Ash in different proportion and are presented. It can be concluded that 30% Fly Ash by weight mixed with Black Cotton soil gives optimum result for most of the properties.
Influence of untreated and treated coir pith on compaction and strength chara...eSAT Journals
Abstract Scarcity of land has led to the improvement of ground by stabilisation so as to utilize the available land, which was once considered unsuitable for construction activities. Many studies have been carried out to improve the ground using natural and synthetic fibres. Industrial and agricultural wastes are used to stabilise the soil as they are easily available and cheap. This can reduce the pollution due to disposal of such wastes. In this study, coir pith is used to stabilise the soil. This paper studies the effect of untreated and untreated coir pith on the compaction and the shear strength characteristics of the soil mixed with coir pith in varying percentages of 0% to 3% with an increment of 0.5%. A slight reduction in the dry density was observed with increase in percentage of coir pith. Whereas the treated coir pith soil mix shows increase in dry density as the pith content increases. It was observed that the optimum moisture content increases with increase in percentage of coir pith till 2% and thereafter decreases. For treated pith-soil mix, OMC decreases at first and then increases. A considerable increase in shear strength was observed after the chemical treatment of coir pith. In this research, an attempt has been made to improve the engineering properties of locally available clayey soil by making a composite mix with waste river sand and fly ash in appropriate proportions. A series of proctor compaction tests, unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests and falling head permeability tests were carried out. It was revealed that both strength and permeability characteristics of clayey soil improve on addition of local sand and fly ash. Thus, a suitable mix proportion of clayey soil-sand-fly ash for various geotechnical applications like construction of embankments, low cost rural roads etc. can be obtained. The main objective of this research work is to obtain an improved construction material by making the best use of available clayey soil & sand and to make the effective utilization of fly ash. history. Ordinary building blocks are made of a mixture of clay, which is subjected to various processes, different
according to the nature of the material, after being properly prepared the clay is formed in moulds to the desired
shape, then dried and burnt. The providing affordable housing is a challenge around the world, especially in
developing countries. The impediments to solving the housing problem are scarcity of land and high cost of building
materials. Furthermore, such materials must be abundantly available and renewable in nature. Local soil has always
been the most widely used material for earthen construction. The main objective of this investigation had been
focused on the improvement of the compressive strength of the black cotton soil blocks with different content of lime
by reinforcing the geo-grid. The rectangular (200mm × 100mm × 100mm) blocks are prepared with soil treated with
5%, 10% and 15% lime with the geo-grid reinforcement at the middle depth of the blocks, the compressive strength of
the bricks is obtained by laboratory compression test apparatus the results obtained are compared with unreinforced samples.

Properties of soil can be enhanced by using different stabilization techniques. Cotton clothes have a high tensile Strength as compare to natural fibers. In this study waste cotton clothes coated with bitumen were used for stabilization of soil. As waste cotton clothes are cost effective and eco-friendly, they can be modified and used as effective reinforcement material/stabilizer. Experiment was carried out by adding 1% and 2% of waste cotton cloth coated with bitumen to improve its strength characteristics.

An investigation was made to evaluate the effect of the incorporation of bio-based jatropha oil cake (JOC), Titanium dioxide (TiO2) and Clay on the erosive wear behavior of Basalt-epoxy (BE) hybrid composites. A Vacuum-Assisted Resin Infusion (VARI) technique was employed to obtain a filled and unfilled B-E composites. The effect of different impact velocities (20 and 40 m/s) and angle of impingement from 300 to 900 on the performance of the wear resistance of the composites were measured. The results of erosive wear losses, angle of impingement, and impact velocity and erosion rate of 3% of TiO2 and JOC filled and unfilled B-E composites are analyzed and discussed. The worn surface features of unfilled and filled B-E composites were examined using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).

A Study on Stabilzation of Black Cotton Soil Using Ferric ChlorideIOSR Journals
Expansive soils such as black cotton soil are very susceptible to detrimental volume changes, with changes in moisture. This behavior of soil is attributed to the presence of mineral Montmorillonite which has expanding lattice; Expansive soils because of their specific physical & chemical make are subjected to volume changes. In many countries including India, these soils are so extensive that alteration of highway route to avoid the material is virtually impossible. Various remedial measures like soil replacement, prewetting, moisture control, lime stabilization etc have been practiced with varied degree of success. Extensive research is going on to find the solutions to black cotton soils. Recent investigations on chemical stabilization revealed that strong electrolytes like potassium chloride, Ferric chloride can be used in place of conventionally used lime due to their ready dissolvability in water and supply of adequate cations for ready cation exchange. In the present work experimentation is carried out to investigate efficacy of ferric chloride and fly ash in improving the properties of black cotton soil.
Black cotton soils are among a group of soils termed as problematic soils. These soils have
undesirable characteristics in relation to construction works and therefore need some form of improvement
when encountered in construction projects. Techniques for improvement of black cotton soils include
replacement, moisture control or adding a stabilizer. Cement and/or lime has been commonly used in soil
stabilization for ages. However, due to the associated cost, required quality control and the need to utilize waste
materials in construction, new stabilizing materials are emerging. This paper presents a study on application of
quarry dust for improving properties of black cotton soil in Mbeya region, Tanzania. The targeted improvement
was to achieve minimum acceptable characteristics for road subgrade as per Tanzania standards. It was
determined that 40% by weight of quarry dust added to the black cotton soil was able to improve the
characteristics by increasing CBR value from 3.8 to 15.7 and reducing PI from 32% to 15%. It will be worthy
studying the cost implication of the suggested improvement in relation to other techniques before application of
the study findings.
THE ENGINEERING CHARACTERISTICS OF BLACK COTTON SOIL TREATED WITH CORN STRAW ASHEditorIJAERD
Black cotton soils (BCS) are found in extensive quantities in the North – East region of Nigeria specifically in
the northern parts of Adamawa State and southern parts of Borno State. This soil expands while it gets wet and shrinks as the
water dries out. On account of this high volumetric changes they are not directly suitable for construction. The excessive
swelling and shrinkage are sequel to the presence of fine particles of clay. Swelling and shrinkage of soil often results in
differential settlement of the structure. Black cotton soils must therefore be treated by using suitable admixtures to stabilize it
for use in civil engineering works. In this research work, stabilization of black cotton soil is done by using Corn Straw Ash
(CSA) as an admixture. The CSA reacts with clay particles from the black cotton soil to form a material of higher strength.
The physical and chemical properties of the soil were obtained. Other tests such Atterberg’s limits, California Bearing
Ratio(CBR), Unconfined Compressive Strength(UCS) were carried out at different percentage contents of CSA: at 0%, 4%,
6%, 8% and 10%. From the test results, it is observed that optimum value of CBR and UCS are at 8% of the ash. At this
percentage of the additive the following improvement occurred in the black cotton soil; CBR improved from 4.5% to 11.3%,
UCS 107.5KN/m2
to 140.5KN/m2
and plasticity index decreased from 24% to 11.2%. It is concluded that CSA has a great
potential in the improvement of the mechanical properties of black cotton soil.

In the present study, an adjustment of subgrade soil by using sand and cement i.e. varying the rate of sand and consistent rate of cement by weight of soil is applied to improve the strength of subgrade soil. The grounds for this field is to determine the ideal measurement of the stabilizer, which heightens the effectiveness of soil. Which will be suited for pavement construction. To assess the strength of soil, different test has been performed on the soil. It has been noticed that sand and cement increases the effectiveness of the land.

Improvement in Properties of Black Cotton Soil with an Addition of Natural Fi...IJERA Editor
Improvement of soil in foundation is a major challenge in civil engineering. Structures built on black cotton soil may be damaged due to high swelling and shrinkage characteristics of this soil with variation of water content. Black cotton soil is an expansive soil which loses its strength in presence of water. On the other hand, it has behavior of shrinkage when loss of moisture is there. About 20 % of land area in India is covered by black cotton soil. Because of its swelling & shrinkage properties, it is also called expansive soil. The present paper is an attempt to study the effectiveness of coconut fiber (coir) to control swelling properties of black cotton soil along with an impact on its strength characteristics and dry density. The test results show that in presence of 2% coir fibre, the shrinkage limit is increases by 7.52% to 12.62%. Increase in compressive strength was observed from1.09 to1.32 kg per sq-cm.

Properties of soil can be enhanced by using different stabilization techniques. Cotton clothes have a high tensile Strength as compare to natural fibers. In this study waste cotton clothes coated with bitumen were used for stabilization of soil. As waste cotton clothes are cost effective and eco-friendly, they can be modified and used as effective reinforcement material/stabilizer. Experiment was carried out by adding 1% and 2% of waste cotton cloth coated with bitumen to improve its strength characteristics.

To validate the powerful of the STATCOM FACTS controller, the studied power system is simulated and subjected to different severe disturbances. The results prove the effectiveness of the proposed STATCOM controller in terms of fast damping the power system oscillations and restoring the power system stability.

Now a days solar harvesting is more popular. As the popularity become higher the material quality and solar tracking methods are more improved. There are several factors affecting the solar system. Major influence on solar cell, intensity of source radiation and storage techniques The materials used in solar cell manufacturing limit the efficiency of solar cell. This makes it particularly difficult to make considerable improvements in the performance of the cell, and hence restricts the efficiency of the overall collection process. Therefore, the most attainable maximum power point tracking method of improving the performance of solar power collection is to increase the mean intensity of radiation received from the source used. The purposed of tracking system controls elevation and orientation angles of solar panels such that the panels always maintain perpendicular to the sunlight. The measured variables of our automatic system were compared with those of a fixed angle PV system. As a result of the experiment, the voltage generated by the proposed tracking system has an overall of about 28.11% more than the fixed angle PV system. There are three major approaches for maximizing power extraction in medium and large scale systems. They are sun tracking, maximum power point (MPP) tracking or both.

Power dissipation is a challenging problem for today's system-on-chip design and test. This paper presents a novel architecture which generates the test patterns with reduced switching activities; it has the advantage of low test power and low hardware overhead. The proposed LP-TPG (test pattern generator) structure consists of modified low power linear feedback shift register (LP-LFSR), m-bit counter, gray counter, NOR-gate structure and XOR-array. The seed generated from LP-LFSR is EXCLUSIVE-OR ed with the data generated from gray code generator. The XOR result of the sequence is single input changing (SIC) sequence, in turn reduces the switching activity and so power dissipation will be very less. The proposed architecture is simulated using Modelsim and synthesized using Xilinx ISE9.2.The Xilinx chip scope tool will be used to test the logic running on FPGA.

In the last decade, the greatest threat to the wireless sensor network has been Reactive Jamming Attack because it is difficult to be disclosed and defend as well as due to its mass destruction to legitimate sensor communications. As discussed above about the Reactive Jammers Nodes, a new scheme to deactivate them efficiently is by identifying all trigger nodes, where transmissions invoke the jammer nodes, which has been proposed and developed. Due to this identification mechanism, many existing reactive jamming defending schemes can be benefited. This Trigger Identification can also work as an application layer .In this paper, on one side we provide the several optimization problems to provide complete trigger identification service framework for unreliable wireless sensor networks and on the other side we also provide an improved algorithm with regard to two sophisticated jamming models, in order to enhance its robustness for various network scenarios.

Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.

Abstract—Fly Ash generation and utilization both are
expected to increase but the gap between them will also
increase. Researchers are finding out new area for utilization
of Fly Ash to minimize its environmental impact. One such
area is Geotechnical Engineering. Black Cotton Soil is a
problematic soil with respect to Soil-Structure interaction. In
this paper, various properties of Black Cotton Soil like pH,
plasticity index, volume change behavior and dry density are
studied after mixing Fly Ash in different proportion and are
presented. It can be concluded that 30% Fly Ash by weight
mixed with Black Cotton soil gives optimum result for most
of the properties.

I. INTRODUCTION
As per the data of 2010-11, fly ash utilization in India is
about 100 million tonne per year against the generation of
140 million tonne. This figure is expected to increase to 115
million tonne and 160 million tonne respectively for 2012-
13. By the year 2031-32, it is expected that 900million tonne
of fly ash will be generated. Such a huge volume is very
difficult to manage (store) and will have telling impact on
environment.[2],[3],[4]
The use of fly ash is largely limited in cement concrete
as a replacement to binding material. There is increased
awareness in this area and guidelines are also available in
relevant Indian Standard codes of practice. Not similar
progress has been seen in the area of use of fly ash as partial
replacement to soil or mixing with soil, may be due to
insufficient research work in that direction.
This study explores the use of fly ash to improve the
soil characteristics and thereby providing solution to
following two major problems:
Large quantity of Un-utilized fly ash (and the volume1)
will increase every year)
Soft soils which requires costly treatment to stabilize it2)
e.g. Black Cotton Soil.
We know that Black Cotton soil is very unsuitable
for durability of any type of construction. Indian state of
Gujarat has vast region formed by Black Cotton soil and
therefore it is very important to study its properties for any
kind of project.
II. SAMPLE COLLECTION
The Black Cotton Soil for this study was collected
from a field near town Dakor, the area covered entirely by
the Black Cotton Soil. The Fly Ash sample was collected
from The Kutch Lignite Thermal Power Station located near
Panandhro village in Kutch District of Gujarat State.

classified as Class-F fly ash but close observations will
suggest that it has high silica content and therefore will
behave differently from Class-F fly ash generated by
burning of regular sub-bituminous coal.

The pH of the Fly Ash is higher than the Black
cotton Soil, so by mixing the Fly Ash in Soil the pH of the
mix increases and improves anti-corrosive property.

When the underground structures are placed in the soil,
they are subjected to the corrosive effect of the soil. From
the above result of pH for the Soil Fly Ash mixture, the pH
increases as Fly Ash content increases which helpsin
reducing the corrosive effect of the soil.

The Specific Gravity of the Fly Ash is higher than
the Black Cotton Soil. So as Fly Ash content increases, the
Specific Gravity of the Soil Fly Ash mix is also increases.

The Fly Ash particles are finer than the Black
cotton Soil particles. So mixture of these shows good effect
on the Liquid Limit, Plastic Limit, and the Plasticity Index.

It can be seen that initially, Liquid Limit increases upto
10% of Fly Ash content, afterwards it decreases. Plastic
Limit increases steadily and therefore Plasticity Index
decreases after initial increase.

Free swell index is one of the most important properties of
expansive soil like Black Cotton. The addition of the Fly
Ash with Soil decreases the Swelling and Shrinkage ratio of
the Black Cotton soil.

By increasing Fly ash content, the MDD increases.
Maximum dry density increases with increase in Fly Ash
content upto 30% at the optimum moisture content of 13%.
VII. CONCLUSION
From the various laboratory test performed on various Soil-
Fly Ash combinations, following points were concluded:
1) The pH of Fly Ash is 23.29% higher than the Black
Cotton Soil collected for study.
2) At 40% Fly Ash content the Specific Gravity
increases upto 10%.
3) The Liquid Limit initially increases for 10% of Fly
Ash content and then it decreases and the Plastic Limit
increases by 60% at 40% Fly Ash content. The Soil is
having low plasticity which decreases further by 45% with
increase in Fly Ash content by 40% .
4) It can be seen that by mixing 40% Fly Ash, FSI
reduces by 85%.At 30% of Fly Ash content, FSI reduces by
70% .
5) For 30% Fly Ash content, Shrinkage ratio
decreases by 84%.
6) The optimum MDD is obtained for 30% Fly Ash
content at 13% OMC.
Overall it can be concluded that 30% Fly Ash content is the
optimum content for which all above properties shows good
amount of improvement.
