This document summarizes a study that investigated using crumb rubber and recycled glass powder in flexible pavements. The goal was to utilize commonly wasted materials like scrap tires and glass in road construction. Six different bituminous mixes were proposed using various replacement percentages of crumb rubber and glass powder. The properties of the proposed mixes were then tested and compared to conventional bituminous mixes. Testing included determining properties of the modified bitumen like specific gravity, penetration, softening point and viscosity. Marshall stability and flow tests were also conducted on the mixes. The results indicated that the proposed mixes using waste materials could be suitable for use in hotter regions and may reduce costs through thinner pavement layers.

Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension and brittle also. Cracks also start forming as soon as the concrete is placed. These above said drawbacks don't permit the use of normal concrete in pavements as they lead to a lack of ductility along with fracture and failure. These weaknesses in concrete can be mitigated by using fibers as reinforcement in the concrete mix. Waste materials in the form of polyethylene and tires cause environmental pollution which leads to various health problems. Polyethylene and waste tires can be reused and used efficiently in the concrete as reinforcement in the fiber form. Polyethylene is a synthetic hydrocarbon polymer which can improve the ductility, strength, shrinkage characteristics. This study deals with the effects of addition of polyethylene fiber on the properties of concrete. In this study, Polyethylene and tire fibers were cut into the size of 25mm x 8mm and they were used 1.5 each by volume. Grades of concrete used were M 30, M 35 and M 40. IRC 44 2008 was followed for the design of concrete mix. In this study, the results of the strength properties of Polyethylene fiber reinforced concrete have been presented. Four point bending and double shear test were performed in the laboratory for flexure and shear strength determinations. There was seen an increase of 18 in the 28 day compressive strength along with an increase of 39 in flexure Strenght and 32 in shear strength. It is also found that 22 reduction in the four point bending test and 36 reduction in deflection by double shear tests were initiated out from the experiments. Theoretical analysis of deflection was carried out with the help of energy methods. Practical values were verified with the theoretical values within the allowable limits. Finally, it is concluded that polyethylene and tire used efficiently in reinforced cement concrete. Abstract In this present work we identified and investigated the use of crusher dust and granite floor slab chips in concrete as an alternative fine aggregate and coarse aggregate respectively, the tests were conducted on standard concrete cubes (150 mm x 150 mm x 150 mm), cylinders (150 mm x 300 mm) and prisms (100 mm x 100 mm x 500 mm). Tests on the physical properties of crusher dust, granite chips and its influence on the strength of fresh and hardened state, along with a comparative study with the concrete of river sand are made. The properties investigated were specific gravity, fineness modulus, water absorption, free surface moisture, bulk density and grading zone. Tests were conducted on 6 cubes, 6 cylinders and 6 prisms for M20 grade mix design with sand and crusher dust as fine aggregates, granite metal and granite floor slab chips as coarse aggregates. The strength parameters compressive strength, Split-Tensile strength and flexural strength were compared at 7 days and 28 days respectively. Mix design procedure in accordance with IS 10262-2009, IS 456-2000 and Sp 23-1982 using 20mm coarse aggregate was adopted for investigation. The investigation indicates that crushed stone dust has vast potential as fine aggregate in concrete construction. Crusher dust not only reduces the cost of construction but also helps reduce the impact on environment by consuming the material hitherto considered as a waste product with few applications. Abstract
The effect of partial replacement of natural sand (NS) by crushed sand (CS) and partial replacement of cement by supplementary cementing material have been investigated. All the trials have been taken at actual construction site and tested at site laboratory. Supplementary Cementing materials (SCM) Fly Ash and GGBS have been used and cement has been replaced by three combination of Fly ash (15%, 20%, 25%) and two combinations of GGBS (40% & 50%). In both the cases , 50% natural sand have been replaced by crushed sand .Both the materials have shown good compatible results when used and it is found that use of SCM gives better result in terms of compressive strength and workability due to reduction in w/c ratio. This paper puts forward the applications of crushed sand and supplementary cementing materials as an attempt towards sustainable development. It will help to find viable solution to the declining availability of natural sand to make eco-balance.

Abstract This paper presents the results, obtained after replacement of fine and coarse aggregates, in concrete mix, with tyre rubber. The tyre rubber, which has been used in the present study, is obtained after the mechanical trituration process of post – consumed tyres from trucks. Researchers have investigated, over the years, the use of recycled tyre rubber waste as a replacement for aggregate in concrete and its effectiveness. “Rubcrete-Mix” which would result from such replacement is found to have many engineering applications and holds promise in future. Rubcrete also possesses good mechanical properties and is considered to be one of the best and economical ways of recycling the used tyres. The present experimental study has the aim of arriving at the optimum quantity of the replacement material for the aggregates in concrete mixtures, for various engineering applications. For achieving a proper bond with the surrounding concrete paste, the recycled aggregates have been designed with respect to their size, shape and gradation. With the water – cement ratio being kept constant fine and coarse aggregate has been replaced with tyre rubber powder and chipped rubber and also cement has been replaced with silica fume. In preparing the concrete, Portland slag cement has been used along with super plasticizer less than 1% by weight of cement to achieve required workability of the resulting concrete. Furthermore, durability studies have been conducted and mixes have been designed for M30 grade concrete. Keywords: Concrete Mix, Mechanical Properties, Rubber Powder, Chipped Rubber, Silica fume.

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!
