This document discusses an experimental study on the effectiveness of stabilizing black cotton soil with sodium carbonate and calcium carbonate. Black cotton soil samples were prepared with chemical solutions containing 0.5-3% of each chemical by weight of soil. Tests were conducted to determine the index properties, compaction characteristics, unconfined compression strength, and triaxial shear strength of the treated soils at 0, 3 and 7 days of curing. The results showed that both chemicals increased the maximum dry density and decreased the optimum moisture content of the soil compared to the untreated soil. Calcium carbonate was found to be more effective than sodium carbonate in improving the strength and stability of the black cotton soil.

Index properties of alkalis treated expansive and non expansive soil contamin...IOSR Journals
Abstract : In recent years attention has been given to the acidification and alkalization of the soils to
understand physico-chemical and Engineering properties. The effect of Sulphuric acid and Orthophosphoric
acid with Calcium Carbonate and Magnesium Carbonate treated soils is studied. The Optimum percentages of
CaCO3 and MgCO3 mix were found for Black Cotton soil and Red Earth based on compaction test. Liquid limit
is decreased with CaCO3.and increased with MgCO3. Plastic limit is increased with CaCO3 and decreased with.
MgCO3. Shrinkage limit is increased with CaCO3 and decreased with MgCO3. Acidification of alkalis treated
soils by one normal Sulphuric acid and one normal Ortho Phosphoric acid showed alteration and impairment in
index properties. However, the effect of 1N H3PO4 on the alkali treated soils has less negative effect than with
1N H2SO4 on the index properties. It is evident that the index properties of soils are altered when compared with
their initial characteristics. The reasons for the observed behavior of soils are addressed.

Expansive soils are produced from the break down of basic igneous rocks where seasonal variation of weather is extreme. In India, these soils are normally derived from the weathering of basalt rocks. Also, these soil deposits are derived from various other types of rocks including very old sedimentary depositsin the present research, an attempt has been made to study the stabilization of the local soils high and low expansive having low bearing strength from two different parts of Bhopal by mixing independently with dolochar and fly ash plentily available in Bhopal in the proportions from 5 up to 30 by dry weight of the mixture with increment of 5 with and without lime The experimental programme conducted in this study is comprised of index tests, compaction tests, shear tests, unconfined compressive strength tests, CBR tests and consolidation tests in conformity with approved standards on soil alone and also on stabilised soils to evaluate their individual swelling, compaction, strength, compressibility and drainage characteristics. With addition of fly ash or dolochar, the L.L. and P.I. of soils gradually decreases with the increase of fly ash or dolochar contents. Maximum decrease is observed at 30 fly ash or 30 dolochar content Addition of fly ash or dolochar decreases the free swell index FSI of soil, maximum decrease being observed at fly ash or dolochar content of 30 . Addition of lime to the above mixtures, reduces FSI further. The FSI of soil 1 with 30 fly ash or dolochar content is reduced by 100 and 85 for soil fly ash and soil dolochar mixture respectively at 4 lime content. CBR of soil fly ash or soil dolochar increases with the increase of fly ash or dolochar content. The maximum increase being observed at 30 fly ash or dolochar content. At 30 fly ash content, the 4 days soaked CBR of soil 1 and soil 2 increase by 126 and 117 respectively, whereas, the 4 days soaked CBR of soil 1 and soil 2 at 30 dolochar content increase by 154 and 163 respectively. Efficient Way to Improve Subgrade Property of Pavement by Chemical StabilizationIJERA Editor
There are numerous soil stabilization techniques for improving the strength of the in-situ soil especially in road construction, and one of the techniques is using chemical additive. Chemical improvement is a time saving method that enables subgrade or sub-base layer and otherwise unsatisfactory materials in-situ to obtain higher density and strength, obviating the need for costly excavation and replacement with borrow material. This paper presents some results of the preliminary stages of research program carried out to explicate the mechanism and behavior between the liquid chemical and the engineering properties of three natural residual soils at laboratory scale. Liquid-formed chemical was selected in this research due to scarcity of such findings instead of the prevalent solid chemical additive such as lime, cement or fly ash. The focus on this research is on the improvement of engineering properties of two natural residual soils and mixed with different proportions of liquid chemical. Series of laboratory test on engineering properties, such as Modified Proctor Test, Consistency limits, moisture-density relationship (compaction) and California Bearing Ratio was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness and performances of this chemical as soil stabilizing agent.
The Influence of Swine-Waste Biochar on the Early-Age Characteristics of Ceme...IJERA Editor
The purpose of this research was to investigate the influence of swine-waste biochar (SB) on the early-age characteristics of cement pastes. Using a water/binder ratio of 0.28, SB modified cement pastes were analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), flow, and Vicat setting tests. Notably, SB reduced the flow and initial setting times of SB modified cement pastes. Due to its porous and negatively charged surfaces, capillary water was adsorbed into the pores of the carbonaceous SB and this reduced the flow of the SB modified cement pastes. Furthermore, it is suspected that the reductions in initial setting times may have been because with the addition of water to the dry SB/cement binder mix, chemical reactions between the calcium cations from Portland cement and carboxylate anions from SB resulted in the development of Calcium Polycarboxylate Salts (C-P-S). Improvements in the properties of SB could enhance its applications in rapid-setting and flow-reducing concrete.
Geotechnical Properties of Lateritic Soil Stabilized with Periwinkle Shell As...INFOGAIN PUBLICATION
This paper investigated the geotechnical properties of lateritic soil stabilized with periwinkle shell ash in road construction. The natural lateritic soil sample was gotten from Federal University of Technology, Akure and stabilized with 0, 2,4, 6, 8 and 10% of the periwinkle shell ash and were subjected to tests such as natural moisture content, specific gravity, atterberg's limit, compaction, california bearing ratio and unconfined compressive strength. The result of the classification tests shows that the natural lateritic soil is poor for road construction. The engineering value of the soil sample was enhanced by the addition of periwinkle shell ash. The optimum percentage by weight of soil of periwinkle shell ash for improvement of the strength of the lateritic soil is 6%. The periwinkle shell ash enhanced the suitability of the soil sample for its use as subgrade and subbase.
Strengthening Of Subgrade by Using RBI Grade-81 A Case StudyIOSR Journals
Road infrastructure in India is developing at a very fast pace. A good pavement is needed for the
safe, comfortable and economical movement of traffic. If the in situ soil has no adequate strength, either soil
from other sites are to be used or the available soil has to be stabilized so that it attains sufficient strength to
carry the traffic load. Soil can be stabilized with RBI grade 81 and then can be used in Sub grade and also as
Sub base and base Layers. The whole Pavement can be constructed by using RBI grade 81 thus reducing energy
consumed and placing of unbound granular material (WBM/WMM) without compromising on Strength and
durability. Various samples have been made by taking soil with 0% RBI Grade-81 content; 2% RBI Grade-81
content; 4% RBI Grade-81 content; 6% RBI Grade-81 content; 8% RBI Grade-81. The CBR sample is prepared
by 7 days curing and 4 days soaked period. The comparison of the strength results with or without RBI Grade 81 has been done. It has been found that RBI Grade 81 is a unique and innovative material which results in
saving the extra cost of the pavement

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!
