This document introduces the SAMR model for evaluating how educational technologies are being used in online courses. The SAMR model categorizes technology use into four levels: substitution, augmentation, modification, and redefinition. It encourages educators to consider how they can move courses beyond just enhancing activities with technology, and instead rely on technology to transform learning tasks. The document provides examples of how common course assignments could be redefined at higher levels of the SAMR model by leveraging technologies like mobile devices, video, and online collaboration tools. Instructors are encouraged to use the SAMR model to evaluate where their own course currently falls and identify opportunities to more fully transform tasks through strategic technology integration.
