Students love Wikipedia, but often don't understand wikis. In several sections of our for-credit IL courses at Wake Forest University, we have replaced the Annotated Bibliography with a wiki as the final project. We have found that this encourages collaboration among students, increases the engagement with the material and fosters a deeper understanding of the concepts of wikis and their place in the information landscape. This session will outline how we implemented wikis, how they worked, how they were received by students and what lessons we learned along the way.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

3. What is Student Engagement?
• Stovall (2003) suggests that engagement is defined by a
combination of students‟ time on task and their willingness
to participate in activities.
• Krause and Coates (2008) say that engagement is the
quality of effort students themselves devote to
educationally purposeful activities that contribute directly
to desired outcomes.

• NOTE: survey cannot be anonymous for this to work.
• Examples: demographics survey or technology
usage/skills survey during first week of class.
44. Example 2: Take away bonus
points for not completing survey
• Research has shown that people can be more highly
motivated at the prospect of losing something they
already have, rather than getting something they don’t.
• Give everyone 5 bonus points in advance, but tell
them that you will take those points away of they don’t
submit the survey.

Before we get into it: consider this.
Starbucks is often touted as the ‘gold standard’ of a successful mobile app. They’ve got both a responsive mobile website, and a native app.
But the things you can do with the app are very different from the things you can do on their mobile site. And that is by design: the use-case and context for each one is different. It is NOT their intention to replicate the Starbucks Website experience on their mobile app.
The app is built primarily to improve the most important workflow a customer is going to encounter at a Starbucks: ordering and paying for a drink.
-----
We take a similar approach to Mobile at D2L.
Responsive web makes the Brightspace Learning Environment available in full functionality, on all devices.
And native apps for iOS and Android make specific workflows even better on mobile.
We’ll talk about this in more detail later on.
But first, let’s take a step back for a minute to talk about why any of this is important.
We know that college students love their phones and mobile devices. Between laptops, smartphones, and tablets, the average college students owns two or three different devices.
And millennials – many of whom are now in college – are on their smartphones almost three and a half hours per day.
So mobile is obviously a big deal. And we see that reflected in Higher Ed industry surveys.
In 2015, 84% of higher ed institutions surveyed in the Campus Computing survey indicated they’ve already activated mobile apps or intend to do so at their institution in the coming years. And you can see how that percentage has grown over the past several years.
But the problem is – even though everyone “wants” mobile, a lot of institutions don’t seem to be doing a very good job at implementing it.
70% of CIOs and Senior IT officers say mobile is a top priority, but only 17% rate the current mobile services at their institutions as “excellent”.
So here’s a quote from the 2016 NMC Horizon Report for Higher Education.
Today’s students expect to be able to use whatever devices they choose – and I want to highlight that phrase: “whatever devices they choose” – to access learning content, take notes, gather data, and communicate with their peers and instructors.
As we saw in the previous slides, a lot of institutions are actively pursuing mobile solutions for their students, but there seems to be a gap between what they’re doing, and what is needed.
And that’s why the “whatever devices they choose” part of this quote is important. It’s what guides our mobile strategy at D2L, which is different than what many others in the industry are doing.

Students can see their table of contents and course content from Pulse
After logging in to Brightspace Pulse, a new Courses tab displays, listing courses the learner is currently enrolled in.
After selecting a course, the learner can browse the course outline, choose a module, and then view a content topic.
As well, when a learner receives a notification for a Grade item or announcement in Brightspace Pulse, the Open in Safari link now opens a responsive web page. If the Daylight Experience is not turned on, users see a full desktop page.
F10951: Learners can see their course content (iOS)
F10726: Learners can see the table of contents for their courses (iOS)
F11411: Learners can see the table of contents and course content (Android)
Pulse has a weekly calendar view that gives a visual representation of workload and key deadlines for students.
It is integrated with the Brightspace Learning Environment, and pulls in information from all the courses the student is enrolled in.
Pulse goes beyond just replicating the desktop LMS experience on a phone though. We have designed the user experience to recognize how students use the LMS specifically on the go. Features like notifications for news and announcements, and swipe-to-reveal gestures for grades make it a truly delightful experience.
The swipe-to-reveal gesture, for instance, comes out of end-user research that showed some student anxiety around when and how they receive grades. Students don’t just want to be blasted with all their grades at once. So we listened, and we developed the app with that personal touch and specific understanding of student experience.
And students love it.
This piece of feedback submitted by a student through a feedback tool directly in the Pulse app. It was entirely unsolicited – she just felt the need to express her satisfaction with it.
So that’s Brightspace Pulse. Designed to help students manage the day-to-day tasks and schedules associated with their learning journey.
