‘Collaborate is well aligned to help support the
institutions’ transition.
Whether it is in augmenting physical space,
supporting new ways of teaching and learning, or
developing digital literacies, Collaborate affords the
opportunity to support a range of different strands of
the Waterside model.’

Senior Lecturer in SEN
Education
Student Research Proposals
• Students in Thailand deliver their
research proposal presentations –
an opportunity simply not possible
before and very much welcomed
by students.
• Monsoon weather sometimes
affects access by wireless, but
students then use their mobiles.
• Prithvi is still able to deliver his
classes whenever he is abroad
Emma Whewell, Senior
Lecturer, PE Specialist,
Teacher Education
Interviews – Primary graduates
Positives
• Sharing drawings of themselves through the file
share facility has been very effective, allows both
users to see and annotate during the interview.
• The chat facility has been used effectively to post
interview questions to refer to during interview.
• The guest link and recording facility have been
effective in organising the interviews and
referring back to and analysing the content.
• Works on most internet platforms so my
participants have been able to join me from their
own homes on an evening
Negative - the reliability of connection.
Jo Palmer,
Senior Lecturer,
Teacher Education
PG Cert twilight classes
Positive:
• I set a ‘Pre F2F task’, which might be a reading or an activity linked to a
discussion board, the outcomes of these tasks facilitate the collaborate
learning event. 1 hour Collaborate session.
• Collaborate has been extremely useful when teaching PG Cert students
who are distance learners, it has enabled us the opportunity to share
ideas and have discussions that we would have in a teaching room / F2F
situation.
Negative / areas for development:
• My distance learners live in rural Norfolk and Suffolk, where internet
connection is not always strong. This can cause disruptions to the online
sessions with some discussion points being missed.
• Will Collaborate become too ‘chalk and talk’ focused. This is something
that we are trying to move away from. For staff who are less confident in
the technology, or have large cohorts of students, I wonder how
manageable Collaborate will be.

reconsidered their pedagogy; how
they built collaborative video

and the experiences of all

‘When the IT is working, Collaborate works
really well, being able to stay connected to
all the groups and share our ideas. It is
much easier to discuss information in a
seminar setting than in the lecture’
‘Collaborate - mixed
feelings so far. I'm sure it
will work effectively one
day and will be fantastic for
distance learning’
‘Recording of the lecture supports
students with additional needs /
those who are absent/those who
want to revisit key content’
‘Collaborate from the start has been
a huge failure. Lessons are of a
poor quality. It is difficult to hear the
lead lecturer most of the time and
students lose interest’
• For the second session, tutors
reverted to one lecture room…
• 68 students in 4 groups uprooted
• One tutor swore never to use it
again (!)
• Tutor confidence shaken
• Required even more support the
next time
• Student evaluations were
forthright!
Things all went a bit Wild, Wild, West

The Uncomfortable !
The Uncomfortable !
To build it successfully into teaching and learning needs:
• Institutional backing
• Core team of key stakeholders, and Collab ‘champions’
• Realistic & meaningful measures of success
• Training and technical support for staff
• Clear guidance for students
• Purposeful activity – what does this offer that F2F cannot?
• New/Existing policies may need to be developed/modified
• Create a Community site, to include Feedback cycle
• ‘Rock-steady’ connectivity!
Recommendations
1. Ensure that all technical
issues are resolved at the
outset.
2. Test thoroughly where
possible – network checks
https://www.voipspear.com/
3. Develop genuine use cases
align them and then
prioritise them – develop
case studies

Editor's Notes

  • #2 https://youtu.be/pLgJ7pk0X-s
  • #3 Thank you to Malcolm, Julie and the whole team here at Durham for organising another fabulous opportunity for us all to get together and to share our Blackboard Experiences. With a nod to last year’s Lego conference theme, I would like to present ‘The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly’….
  • #4 … of Blackboard Collaborate ‘with the Ultra Experience’.
  • #5 Happy New Year to you all! 2018 is an exciting year for UoN. We’re moving to a brand new campus, called ‘Waterside’ – which will have the same great staff, excellent IT… and NO lecture theatres.
  • #6 In readiness for our move to Waterside, we’ve been redesigning our courses so that instead of passive Lectures, our new normal is Active Blended Learning. Course redesign is giving us the opportunity to examine all sorts of things, such as: (1) Pedagogy – does it meet the needs of 21st century students? (2) Student and staff Experience – are we offering the best? (3) Alignment of LO’s, assessments and resources (4) Are we using technology to TRULY enhance learning and teaching?
  • #7 Having our students at heart - but with module evaluations, results, NSS, and TEF to consider, it is indeed a brave tutor who implements an evolving technology such as video conferencing, and a radical new teaching approach....
  • #8 From December 2016 we piloted Collaborate Ultra, Blackboard’s video conferencing solution, with the support of Lloyd Stock - Senior Implementation Consultant at Blackboard
  • #9 One of the Conference questions is ‘ If technology helps, can you pinpoint why?’
  • #22 A big thank you to Peter Rayment and Sarah Sherman, for creating the MoCo User group on the Blackboard Community site, and also to Gillian Fielding. Whether you are ‘newbies’ or experienced users of Collaborate Ultra, I’d recommend that you join the MoCo Group, and if possible, visit the Live Lounge, held 12-2 last Friday in every month.
  • #23 (Edinburgh support) Negotiate. Enhance Student & Staff Experience Improve Contact Time Improve Retention Improve Engagement Enhance Participation Supporting Student attendance Added Flexibility to the Blend Improving Flexibility Good User Experience Tech Robustness Ease of Access
