The document discusses the potential roles of iPads and mobile apps in technology-enhanced classroom instruction. It examines how iPads can inspire creativity and hands-on learning through multimodal learning and collaboration. Several apps like Dropbox, Noterize and Sounds are highlighted for their pedagogical value in reading, annotating, note-taking, audio notes and cloud sharing. However, challenges also exist around student and faculty training, app management, and the limitations of platforms like Blackboard. Early findings suggest examining the pedagogical soundness of apps and addressing issues of app and mobile carrier compatibility.

As mobile devices continue to proliferate throughout society, the question of how higher education might take advantage of these devices for use in teaching and learning remains unclear. While many institutions now have ‘bring your own device’ (BYOD) policies, others have mandated access to mobile devices at the program or institutional level.
The purpose of this session is present the case of how our department of forestry went about implementing a tablet initiative. The tablet was a required device for both faculty and students entering the program in September 2014 with the intended goals of reducing textbook purchase costs for students, mirroring industry standard practices in mobile device usage and enabling collaborative and active learning in the classroom.
In the session we will share what we have learned thus far in supporting the initiative and reflect on feedback collected from faculty and students in interviews, focus groups and observations throughout the program. At the end of the session, participants should be able to identify the challenges, issues and best practices for implementing a tablet initiative at this level.

My first Ignite presentation (that is presenting 20 slides, 15 secs a slide, auto advance, 5 minutes in total) to share my passion with my audience about Twitter. I'm glad it wasn't recorded because I messed up around slide 6, but I added the script here so you can see that a lot can be said in 5 minutes. It was a fun challenge as it took me out of my comfort zone... much to be said about that :)

Twitter is multi-faceted social networking took that lends itself to synchronous and asynchronous communication. Twitter can transform social networking into educational networking. In the hands of a skilled teacher, Twitter can be a sound pedagogical tool in any discipline, and it can develop 21st literacy skills. Students can share knowledge, follow experts, converse via questions and discussion, and belong to a community that is not restricted by classroom walls. The conclusions reached in a recent study conducted by Junco, Heibergert and Loken (2010) suggest that using Twitter in educationally relevant ways can increase student engagement and improve grades because of faculty and student engagement in the learning process through communication and connections on Twitter.

Ed140: Twitter for Teaching and LearningEnza Antenos
Talk given at the IRLT, York University (Nov 11/10)
Should educators really care about 140 characters or less? Is the buzz surrounding Twitter applicable to higher education? Does this social networking site really have a place in the classroom? Can we leverage Twitter to inform learning and enhance teaching?
We can effectively integrate Twitter to support our pedagogical objectives in any discipline, as it provides the platform for authentic communication with many experts, and it can help motivate learners to engage in learning beyond the classroom. Tweets are self-perpetuating and generative, and create organic learning communities that can facilitate deeper knowledge, better communication and new connections. Twitter, like other social networking tools, is always on, always connected—accessible via web, text, mobile applications, and more—and lends itself to communication synchronously and asynchronously. This talk will offer suggestions for student activities, ways to establish a teacher’s personal learning network, and examples of Twitter use in higher education.
Evolving pedagogies for Teaching ItalianEnza Antenos

ITANJ's "Primo Incontro"
Which of the latest trends in foreign language pedagogy have filtered into the teaching of Italian? Is Italian keeping pace with task-based learning, authentic learning, educational technology, theories in second language acquisition and those of learner autonomy and active and discovery learning? What are your teaching and learning objectives and which best practices do you implement to achieve them? This interactive presentation will highlight some current tendencies in SLA and envisage future directions for teaching Italian.
Let your students journey into the foreign language and its culture 140 characters at a time! Twitter provides the platform for authentic language and, when applied in and/or outside of the classroom, target language use becomes self-perpetuating and generative. Introduce Twitter to your classroom so students can interpret input, produce output and engage in conversations. Microblogging on Twitter helps motivate language learners to communicate more frequently in the language because this social networking tool is always on, always connected—accessible via web, text, mobile applications, and more. Join the microblogging expedition (create your own account on http://twitter.com) and explore the creation of a language learning community with your students and native speakers.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

What is the purpose of the Sabbath Law in the Torah. It is interesting to compare how the context of the law shifts from Exodus to Deuteronomy. Who gets to rest, and why?
We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The iPad combines a portable media player, personal digital assistant, and Wi-Fi mobile platform. It has the potential to enhance learning as follows: \n1) its multi-touch graphical user interface requires greater interaction by the user, therefore, learners may have a greater interaction with content accessible by applications; \n2) it merges personalization with accessibility. Students can download various applications that meet their learning needs/preferences and continue their learning in any environment where a wireless network is available; and \n3) it facilitates student engagement in both social and participatory learning via social networking sites, and via text, audio and video capabilities.\n\nReplacement & transformation : The simplest and most known example of this is to replace a paper textbook by the same textbook in PDF/eBook form on for example an iPad. replace pen&notebook with note taking apps. How is our teaching transformed when these replacements occur? How does student learning change with these replacements?\nE-learning: -delivery of courses; -on-line assessment; -student to student and student to teacher communications; -use of Internet resource; -other learning activities involving ICT and the Internet\n\nMultimodal modes of learning: “Adding an image to a sound and text presentation can be of noteworthy assistance to learners, but only under certain conditions, ... “adding another medium does not turn out to be more productive if the added information is ineffective in facilitating in-depth processing of the information”\n\nCollaborative - physical sharing of the tool during class time; access to the information and data beyond the contact hours\n\n

I invite students to dropbox and share a course folder with them.\nWith every student who downloads dropbox to his/her computer, I get 250MB bonus. The free account allows for 2GB, now, with students who enjoy using dropbox, I have 5.5GB. Lots of space for us to share \n\nCloud computing is valued for its capacity to enable collaboration over the Internet, and for its flexibility in handling the complex computing demands inherent in the IT work of schools. The only caveat is that internet access is required. Data is still stored on the iPad, so nothing is lost if there is no internet access available, but the dangers of single point of failure exists.\n\n\n
In addition to providing many tools for taking notes, Noterize allows users to import PDFs and PowerPoint files for annotation. Documents can be annotated with typed text, sticky note formatted text boxes,  as well as freehand pen and highlighting. Notes may be many pages in length and reordering of pages or insertion of PDF files is easy. \n\n
