Essay on A Lesson before Dying
In the world we live in today, religion is an extremely vibrant factor, not only in the environment
surrounding us but with the people we interact with as well. In Ernest J. Gaines novel, A Lesson
Before Dying, it is easy to see how religion impacts the community. In a small community such as this
novel depicts, religion is the driving force behind nearly every decision made in the story and can be
justified solely on the individual s values.
It is interesting to view religion as the most visible consistency in the novel when the main character,
Grant Wiggins, is himself an atheist. Although he himself does not believe in things such as heaven or
hell he is still impacted upon by the community around him. Grant, an educated man, ... Show more

In this instance we have a man, Jefferson, who needs help to be able to regain his dignity and die like
a man. Even though Grant, an atheist, would not be helping him do so through religion, he will give
him understanding of the importance of his case to the community.
Religion has many faces in the novel as one would expect, but one face that rings true is the notion
that through religion one can gain dignity. As you can imagine, living in the South in times such as
these was certainly a detriment to African Americans such as the characters in the novel, but why is it
then that African Americans put, more often than not, so much clout to the community and its church?
For simple reasons of course, because inside the church is where one can gain back the dignity that is
lost nearly everyday through racism. Church is the only place where anyone can be a leader. Church is
the place to express yourself freely and come together to share a ceremony where racism is not
present. Most importantly church is the place to recognize and evaluate the lives of so many people
that are continually being marginalized. This can be seen as another strong factor on how religion is
central to the community. For example, people that become leaders inside the church are looked at
with more respect, such as Miss Emma, Tante Lou, and Reverend Ambrose; three very active

Summary Of The Truth Of Fact By Ted Chong
As I read The Truth of Fact, the Truth of Feeling, by Ted Chiang, I started to make connections from
modern day life in the United States to the two examples of lifestyles and learning that are described
in this piece. I started to think about how much technology has, and does, influence the average North
American s education and lifestyle and how that has changed significantly over the past few decades. I
also started to think about how the device that is described in the reading would be beneficial and
hurtful to our society and what would happen if someone was able to hack into the storage systems of
all of the information. I believe that advances in technology for personal use will soon get out of hand,
if they have not already, and if we let ourselves rely on technology too much we as a human race will
digress. In tenth grade, as I was about to take the PSAT to start the college process, I was instructed to
write a pledge saying that I was the person whose name was written on the test in cursive. I believe
that there was about two or three other kids who did not throw their arms in horror that you had to
write something in cursive! There were many questions of How do you make a t ? The loss of cursive
is something that has been a side effect of personal technology and who knows? Cursive is not the
only victim that has fallen due to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Commonplace Book Report
What I have noticed through most of the entries in my commonplace book (especially the two stated
above) is that I mostly write down something when it induces a negative emotion from me the quotes
that rile me up and make me upset. And usually these are the quotes that remind me of the hardships
faced by women. As a woman, sexism is a prevalent issue in my life, so when I fight against it, I am
fighting for myself. When I came across the first quote, my mind instantaneously conjured up an
image of a mentally exhausted person who was beyond any point of functionality. Unsurprisingly, the
person I visualized was a woman. I ve noticed this pattern of associating pain and struggle with
women is a recurring theme in my life (and is also outlined in the second quote). I know the first quote
was used in the context of the gulag and the agony of its prisoners, yet for me, it can also be applied to
women, especially those who are victims of abuse. I find this quote raw and emotional. It has come to
symbolize women when they are completely broken, even if this was not the context in which it was
written. It shows what they can be tuned into. How in certain circumstances they are forced to act on

It captures why we need feminism. No matter how hard we try, it seems like women will never be
leveled with their male counterparts. Women are always seen as the ones that need protection, the ones
that need the jacket when it s cold. And this frustrates me to no end. I want women to scream and be
taken seriously. I want us to be in a position of power and be terrifying, be something beyond the
limitations of our physical beauty. I wrote down both these quotes because they reminded me of how
the world is more favorable towards men. And to me, these quotes are undeniably connected, if only
by a Gossamer thread, by the theme of women in pain despite their original

Use Of Technology And Social Media
The use of technology and social media makes our life a lot easier. Social media and technology play a
huge role in our everyday life and friendship. In today s world, people, mostly teenagers use social
media and technology every day to communicate and interact with others. Technology gives us an
opportunity to connect with anybody we want from anywhere we are, saving us time. According to
Daily News 84 percent of people worldwide say they couldn t go a single day without their mobile
device in their hand. That means almost everybody uses their phone in order to communicate and stay
updated. I use my phone every single day and I cannot imagine living my life without a smartphone. I
go on social media websites every day to connect with friends and see what they are doing. It is the
fastest way to interact with friends and I love technology for that. A couple decades ago people didn t
have good communication devices therefore it was much harder for them to connect with each other.
Technology makes it much more convenient and easy for us to use, saving us a lot of time. Having
technology makes our life easier and at the same time virtual. It is very convenient and just normal for
our society to use it everyday. In my opinion modern technology provides more options and
opportunities to connect with our friends. I really don t think that technology and social media ruin our
friendships like most people would say. It all depends on how you use it. Technology and Social

Narcolepsy Research Paper
Narcolepsy: A call for further research
Jelisha Walcott
Extra Credit Research Paper
Bch 3025
Abstract
Narcolepsy is a neurological, sleep disorder that affects 1 in 2000 Americans. It is not selective against
race, nor gender, and does not have a link among family members. Therefore anyone, and everyone is
susceptible to having narcolepsy. In addition narcolepsy is often misunderstood, underdiagnosed
and/or misdiagnosed. Currently there is no cure for this chronic and sometimes debilitating condition.
The focus of this paper is to re examine current knowledge of narcolepsy, through significant
scientific research, in order to generate a desire to continue to search for a cure that will lead to the
improvement of the quality of life for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to accomplish this the researchers used partially digested DNA fragments from a Doberman
pinscher to create a large insert bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) canine genomic library. PCR
testing, chromosome walking, homology mapping, DNA sequencing, etc., was performed on the
canine model and compared to a human model. Comparison of gene maps for several affected and non
affected animals allowed the sequence to be narrowed down into a region likely to be involved with
narcolepsy. The researchers were able to determine that mutations in the hypocretin (orexin) receptor
2 gene (Hcrtr2) resulted in canine narcolepsy. On a surface level, this article was first chosen because
it was one of the most frequently cited articles involving narcolepsy. However upon reading it, one
can see why it has great significance. The paper established that hypocretins play a major role as
neurotransmitters in sleep. Further research was conducted to see if Hcrtr2 played a similar role in
humans and if targeting the gene could cure

Primate Observation Paper
Behavior observed in each primate Patas Monkey They are very fast and can be able to run within
short distances using the most minimal time. It takes less than 10 seconds to run within a distance of
approximately 100 meters. While the animals move around they try to monitor the environment as
quadrupedally and monitoring of the environment can be able to take as much as up to ten minutes in
any case they have doubts of where they are, this alerts them of any predators. Consortship is a
situation where the two animals would stay close to each other and monitor the movement and
environment of each other. This is done as long as the animals are out in an environment that is not
seen as being friendly. The patas can be seen to be less vocal and they move around in silence, they

any other primates, the Siamangs also do sleep, and based on the observation that I had they sleep for
up to around 8hours. They sleep alone with one individual hurdled on each other on the tree trunk,
sitting up right. The male and female have a throat sac which they inflate in order to make a defining
sound, this takes place within seconds. The sacs are important in making their call even much louder

The Run For Wellness Free 5k Run
The Run for Wellness Free 5K run has been an ongoing event since 2011 created by the Houston
Wellness Project. The organization was founded in response to the rising necessity for improving
community access to wellness programing. The mission of The Houston Wellness Project is to strive
to promote healthy lifestyle choices by educating people and communities on a culture of positive
wellness education. The Run for Wellness Free 5K is the main event that assist in fulfilling the
mission as it usually occurs three times a month in three different locations here in Houston. The 5K
run is free event that encourages people of all ages to come out and participate in an event that
promotes a healthy lifestyle. There are many sponsors that support the event and help it be free for the
people. Some of those sponsors include The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center,
Houston Marathon Foundation, Ramey Schwaller, Houston Striders, and many more. Without their
support and donations, plus the help of the volunteers, there is no way possible this event would be
free for people to come out and enjoy. Furthermore, people participating in the event are free to donate
as well, but it is not mandatory.
Being that it was my first ever 5K event, I did not know what to expect when I arrived at George Bush

Crime Statistics Do Not Reflect True Crime Rates Essay
Crime statistics are not what we are led to believe. We hear a lot about the crime rates going up and
down from the media and they tend to expand on specific types of criminal behavior that might be of
interest to the public. When politicians are running for office we are told that the crime rates are down
due to the tough crime policies that they have been implemented. Citizens seek crime rates for
assistance in determining if the area they reside in is safe. Some people wish to get a general idea of
the crime rates for a specific neighborhood where they are thinking of purchasing a house. But what is

By police agencies using this form of statistical classifying, there is a major loss in the data of the
lower crimes on the scale. A complete total of certain crimes are not included in the statistics creating
several inaccuracies in the totals. The UCR policy does not require all crimes to be reported to the
state. Violations of the General City Ordinance and Vehicle and Traffic Law are considered too low for
the hierarchy scale. These types of crimes are never included in the monthly submission and we
generally never hear about them. Since crime statistics begin at the forefront of the police department,
the police officer, this leaves a lot of room for unreliability. Police officers create crime data by
completing and submitting crime reports and arrest reports. These reports include all of the pertinent
information necessary for the committed crime(s) for a specific incident.
There are times when police officers fail to complete written reports of certain crimes or they
downgrade the offense of a report to a less serious offense. Meanwhile, some police reports are over
rated in the seriousness of certain offenses. At the end of each officer s shift the reports and arrest
records are submitted to the appropriate unit or division of occurrence. Within a day or two these
records are then transferred to a central records department and maintained at this location. During the
transfer from one unit to another these records

college, my courses in business were the ones looked forward to the most, and my business projects

Institute s exchange program with a partner school, especially the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Not only would I learn a lot by participating in this program, but I am also confident that I could teach
my fellow students the things that I have learned in my previous Chinese studies. Also, given the fact
that I want to one day pursue a life of entrepreneurship, I am interested in Columbia s emphasis on
this area. While I do not plan on launching my new venture immediately after school, I would like to
participate in the Columbia Entrepreneurs Organization or compete with a team in a business plan
competition. There are so many bright students attending Columbia from all over the globe, I am
excited about exploring the idea of entrepreneurship with them. My professional experiences thus far
have enabled me to learn a great deal while reaching my aggressive professional goals. I know I will

Malaria And Its Effects On The World Health Organization
Since it was first discovered in 1880 by French army surgeon Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran,
Malaria has caused the suffering of millions each year. According to the World Health Organization It
was estimated that in 2015 there were nearly 214 million cases of Malaria worldwide, half a million of
which were lethal. Malaria is caused by a parasite which is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito.
Although cases of Malaria are most common in the sub Saharan Africa region, it has affected people
on a global scale. Efforts to combat Malaria range from insecticide treated bed nets to indoor residual
spraying. Although both methods are viable, they do not have to potential to eradicate Malaria. The
most effective means of combating Malaria is through genetic modification of mosquitoes. By
tinkering with the genes of the very creature who transmits the parasite, we can ultimately eliminate
the disease before it even poses a threat.
Malaria is a lethal disease which takes the life of a child nearly every minute. According to
Healthline.com, Malaria is caused the Plasmodium parasite. These are a group of organisms that
belong to the genu plasmodium and can infect a number of different animal species. The takes refuge
and matures inside of mosquito. Malaria is transmitted by a particular species of mosquitoes which
belong to the Anopheles genus. Only female mosquitoes can transmit the Parasite as only they feed on

Susan Whitfield Life Along The Silk Road Summary
In Susan Whitfield s Life Along the Silk Road, there is no central argument pushing the book in one
specific direction. There is, however, a slice into the daily lives of ten different characters. By dividing
the story into characters rather than chapters in a book, the author gains the ability to tell what daily
life would have actually looked like, from multiple perspectives. A story that would transcend
different social classes, ranks, genders, and ethnic groups. The book covers lifestyles from the life of
luxuries led by Taihe, the Chinese princess and the years of hardship of Seg Lahton, a Tibetan soldier.
The story flows through all of this, weaving it all together through the Silk Road. There is a drawback
to this tactic. To write a book like this there are a significant amount of assumptions made, causing the
reader to wonder what was fact and what was fiction. Still, Whitefield writes her story through
looking at some of the many aspects of an individual character s life, their interactions with family,
government, royalty, and trade and how these all join together to ... Show more content on

The religions often were a reprieve from the harsh government, and that story is really displayed with
how people would use the Buddhist monasteries as a way to avoid paying taxes to the government.
Religion could also offer stability and had benefits for everyone, not just the rich or the poor.
Whitfield said, [The monastery] offered the poor employment, the rich redemption, and a tax haven to
both. (161) However, the people in charge of the religion, no matter the denomination, were all
susceptible to corruption. With Kumtugh the Horseman, his tribal leaders adapted the beliefs of

Personal Code Of Chivalry
A code of chivalry are beliefs that one follows. To some, it means that they must be courageous and
have the want to help those in need. My definition of chivalry means to have courtesy and honor. My
personal code of chivalry is important because it defines who I am and what I believe in. I believe in
being trustworthy, honest, caring, and inspirational to those who need it. Being trustworthy is very
important to me. It is a very good quality that everyone should possess but not everyone does. Being
trustworthy is how friends and family are able to rely on each other. When someone is trustworthy,
they are considered responsible by most. The definition of trustworthy is being able to be relied on as
honest or trustful. When someone is credible, it means that anything they say and do can be trusted.
Being trustworthy also means that they do the right thing even people aren t paying attention. If
someone isn t trustworthy, then that means that no one is going to help them through a time of need

During the argument between Just and Unjust Speech, Just Speech explains that one of the virtues he
will teach him is respect; respect for one s elders and respect for one s father (ln. 993 995). The closest
Unjust Speech comes to discussing the relationship between father and son is when he gives the
example of Zeus overthrowing his father (ln. 904). When Pheidippides begins to beat his father, he
also explains why his actions are just and lawful, turning the words of his father against him to
strengthen his argument. This argument goes on for awhile with Pheidippides using the weaker speech
to gain the upper hand on his father, this is similar to how Unjust Speech beats Just Speech in their

Reductive Materialism
Reductive Materialism:
Reductive materialism is a sub theory or a version of Physicalism. It suggests that sensations of the
mind correlate exactly to physical movements of the brain. In other words, every thought or
experience which occurs in your mind, can be found as activity in your brain. This does not mean
however, that the mind and the brain are the same thing, just that they are both different experiences of
the same thing. For example, a neuroscientist may be able to study your brain activity as you
experience it in your mind. A problem with this theory when applied, is that two different people
having the same thought, will have the identical brain activity. But the thoughts of one person are
subjective to their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However if these experiences are intangible, then they can t be exactly the same as the functioning of
the brain, which is a tangible substance. The Two Marys analogy demonstrates this dispute of
reductive materialism, as once the Mary has learned something by an experience or qualia , then that
experience can t be a physical event in the brain.
Eliminative Materialism:
Eliminative Materialism argues that everything we believe about minds and conciousness does not
exist (including belief itself), on the grounds that it cannot be empirically proved. The claim is that the
understood laws or generalisations we use when we use terms of the mind , are false. For example, if
someone talks about their feeling of pain, then they would call this statement Folk Psychology ,
meaning that the words are just used habitually and don t have any true meaning. They say that the
problem is in the language we use to make sense of what we can t prove. This idea however, is not
consistent, as it disputes the belief in anything, meaning the belief of eliminativism in itself cannot be
believed. Similarly, believing in Nihilism is contradictory.
Another problem with the argument is that it assumes empirical methods of experiment are always
accurate and consistent, when we know that this is not always the case, and some physical events in
the world are not caused by physical substances.

whether they be residential or commercial as far as trying to protect tenants and newer legislations are

4 The fourth kind of license and the most important in relation to the unique factors that a court in
Northern Ireland will take into consideration in distinguishing between a lease and a license is a
contractual licence. A contractual licence which is more relevant in this case is in effect permission to
use or occupy land or property, this type of licence derives from an implied contract. The licensee
does not have a legal estate however, A license normally infers occupational rights similar to that a
hotel owner has over a guest, due to the level of control that the hotel owner exercises over their
property the guest will not have an exclusive possession of the room they occupy and are seen
ultimately as lodgers or a licensee.
While there are the four different forms of licence it is vital to note that it is a very basic different

How Did Gerald Nye Create A Strong Sense Of Isolationism
At the heart of the Great Depression in the early 1930s, America had remained extremely isolationist.
The United States was focused on domestic issues, and improving the economy with Roosevelt s New
Deal programs. FDR also succeeded in improving America s relations with Latin America in his good
neighbor policy, which renounced armed intervention. Across the globe, various totalitarian regimes
were emerging, such as Mussolini, Stalin, and Hitler. These powerful leaders began to militarize and
expand their borders. The United States sought to stay out of any European affairs, and remain in its
storm cellar . However, in the years leading up to World War II, America s long lasting isolationism
was challenged by growing interventionist sentiment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As early as 1932, the United States began warning Japan about its aggression toward China (Doc. A).
The U.S. claimed they would not recognize new territories because it violated the Kellogg Briand Pact
that made war illegal. They also chose to not recognize new treaties as the open door policy with
China was violated. FDR would later deliver his famous Quarantine Speech regarding the Japanese
invasion of China in which he encouraged the peace loving nations to take action against military
expansionism (Doc. 1). FDR also called for a quarantine of Japan through economic embargoes. At
this point, Roosevelt is still staying neutral, but is putting emphasis on morally siding against fascist
nations. This speech was the first action that ticked the isolationists off, as FDR seemed to be hinting
towards internationalism. Later that year, Japan would go on to sink an American gunboat, the Panay.
Japan quickly apologized and neutrality was kept once again. After war broke out and France quickly
fell, Britain was desperate for help. Roosevelt responded by trading 50 destroyers for eight valuable
bases, a negotiation known as the Destroyer Deal (Doc. 2). This was Roosevelt s first step away from
neutrality, and he wasn t stopping there. After shattering the two term tradition in the Election of 1940,
Roosevelt went on to pass the Lend Lease Act. This stated

George Washington s Farewell Address
In George Washington s Farewell Address, Washington warns against the dangers of political factions
by stating, it occurs as matter of serious concern that any ground should have been furnished for
characterizing parties by geographical discriminations, Northern and Southern, Atlantic and Western;
whence designing men may endeavor to excite a belief that there is a real difference of local interests
and views (Washington). However, despite American leaders such as George Washington and James
Madison warning of factionalism, the country would be divided by political parties arising out of the
Northern and Southern states of the union. By the time Walt Whitman wrote Songs of Myself in 1855,
tensions in the United States created by factionalism were at a high and were constantly elevating. In
writing Songs of Myself , Whitman sought to help mend some of the wounds created by factionalism
by seeking to bring together Americans whom factionalism had rendered alien to one another and by
teaching to believe in oneself rather than the beliefs of political parties. When Washington wrote his
Farewell Address, he had already made the decision to retire from his job as president and return to his
home on Mount Vernon. No longer was he concerned with making a future for the country. Instead he
was concerned with offering the parting advice of an old and affectionate friend . Washington offered
his advice on a number of different topics, but the most relevant topic to politics

This paper will analyze Improvisation In a Persian Garden (Mary Catherine Bateson), Seeing (Annie
Dillard), and Landscape, History, and the Pueblo Imagination (Leslie Marmon Silko). Going through
the Purpose, audience, context, ethics, and stance of each author s piece.
All three stories show the reader what each author sees. All three authors write of an event that took
place in their individual lives. Both Dillard and Bateson go back and forth between the past and the
present, while Silko talks of events that took place only in the past.

(Bateson pg.7) Bateson s whole point is that parents do not always understand what the see. Even
when explaining what they see to a child. Landscape, History, and the Pueblo Imagination is different
than the first two stories. Although Silko is describing what she sees, Silko is also describing what
other people are seeing. Silko describes people as part of the land and not just people. Viewers are as
much a part of the landscape as the boulders they stand on . (Silko pg.92) Silko is saying that
landscape is everything seen, not just selected items.
Bateson s purpose is to show how we see things and how we educate children to adult meanings. I had
slipped into a teaching role. (Bateson Pg.7) Bateson is implying that a child must be taught what they
see and not experience it. Bateson goes on to say that when children are explained what they see, they
will understand and not fear what they see.
Dillard wants people to pay attention not to what they see, but to what they do not see unless I call my
attention to what passes before my eyes, I simply won t see it. (Dillard pg.21) Dillard is pointing out
what needs to be seen, those things that we have chosen not to see. Dillard is writing of the things she
saw and learned as a child. Silko wants to educate people, on the difference between reading a story in
a book and hearing someone telling that same story. Oral narrative became the medium in which the

Index Fossils Research Paper
Index fossils are fossils used to define and identify geologic patterns. They work on the premise that,
although different sediments may look different depending on the conditions under which they were
laid down. They may include the remains of the same species of fossils. If the concerned species was
short lived (only lasting a few hundred thousand years) then it is certain that the sediments were
deposited within that narrow time period. The shorter the lifespan of the species, the more precisely
different sediments can be correlated, and so rapidly evolving types of fossils are particularly valuable.
The best index fossils have 4 characteristics: they are unique, prevalent, plentiful, and restricted in
geologic time. Most fossils are from

Essay On Operation Enduring Freedom
On September 10th 2001 a cold front swept through the East Coast with rain and thunderstorms that
would leave behind a cool clear morning on September 11, 2001. That morning started as normally as
any other Tuesday of the year. The sun shined and the birds were singing. Children headed for school,
as adults set out for work. There was no foreshadowing or any warning of what was to come. The
morning routine of a bustling New York City was well into a rhythm, when the world that Americans
knew, was brought to its knees, and would forever be changed.
At 8:45 a.m., Eastern Time, out of the sky hurdled, toward Manhattan, an airplane. The American
Airlines flight 11 was a Boeing 767 airliner that was flying uncharacteristically low. At 8:46 a.m., the

Operation Enduring Freedom started on October 20th 2001, Operation Enduring Freedom was part of
a larger conflict that would become known as the Global War on Terrorism. It was the response to the
attack on 9/11; it came swiftly and was very harsh in nature. In total 2,380 American troops would
lose their lives to the conflict. The objective of the war was to free the regions of focus from the grips
of extremist ideology and rule. Operation Enduring Freedom was gateway to another Middle East
conflict that would begin to liberate a people from the oppressive rule of a sadistic dictator. Operation
Iraqi Freedom was started in order to liberate the Iraqi people from the rule of Saddam Hussein and
also to remove possible weapons of mass destruction from the unstable control of said ruler. The
conflict, which claimed the lives of 4,491 American troops, began on March 20th 2003 and ended on
December 18th 2011. The Global War on Terrorism was a direct result of the terrorist attacks on

Truths In The Preface Of Animal Farm By George Orwell
Many people chose not to believe the reality behind Soviet communism and all of the terrible things
that were happening in Russia when Joseph Stalin was in control. In the Preface of Animal Farm,
Russell Baker stated that Orwell was that political figure that all politicians feared (Baker, ix) and that
he insisted on the truth even when the truth was most inconvenient (Baker, ix). Russell Baker s
assertion is proven to be true in multiple spots throughout the book. Some events that happen in
George Orwell s book, prove certain truths to be factual because they are based off of things that
actually happened with Soviet Communism. By proving these to be true, politicians fear him because
he makes people open their eyes to truths about the world they would rather be blind to instead. The
first truth George Orwell tells in his book Animal Farm, is that brainwashing in the form of
propaganda works. He shows this truth when Napoleon uses Squealer as a form of propaganda that
promotes himself and makes everything else look bad in the eyes of the animals on the farm. Squealer
uses logos when talking to the animals telling them of yet another lie about Snowball, Jones s shot
only grazed him. I could show you this in his own writing, if you were able to read it (Orwell, 90). By
stating he could show the other animals that Snowball did write it, it makes his claim more credible to
the animals who didn t believe him. It also helped that the animals could not check if he was

Mr. Smith And His Burglary Charges
I still mostly agree with my initial post on Mr. Smith and his burglary charges, but I challenge my idea
that justice is not served because he only pleaded guilty to two counts. Since the evidence is
circumstantial and the defendant has no prior record, the plea deal does serve justice. Just because you
believe a person to be guilty of X amount of crimes does not mean he is guilty. If the evidence is
shaky and the defendant is clean, justice is determined through what is presented. I also noted in the
initial post that the defendant could have burglarized more homes, but not caught. This is a stretch and
should never come into the decision process, unless evidence can be provided. With regards to Mr.
Smith, he might seem to be getting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yes, he is high figure in the organization, but there are many other ways of going after the mob bosses
without giving Jimmy immunity. Couldn t Jimmy be used to gain more information from the mob
bosses? For example, offer him a less severe sentence, but make him wear a wire or some sort. He
might have information to give, but make it earn it. Murdering someone should not give you a free
pass. Feedback to the Mr. Smith case: I still come back to the idea of the circumstantial evince and
that the prosecution should try the case in court or offer him a better plea for the victims. Yes,
resources are better used if the case is pleaded out, but I still believe you cannot over look how many
homes he burglarized. I believe a pattern has evolved and he could be more dangerous than perceived.
I would agree that if Mr. Smith had something to offer, the plea deal for guilty on two counts could be
fine. It all comes down to how many homes he burglarized. Twenty is a lot and shows more than I
believe is being taken into account. To Jimmy and the mob bosses, I agree with the statement that the
government is at fault for not finding evidence to convict higher up mob bosses and giving Jimmy
immunity. If the government cannot put together a case against the mob bosses without giving
immunity to a killer, than the mob bosses haven t done anything illegal or they are so good at what
they do, they do not leave a trace. Why believe a killer? He is probably going to say anything to save

Stereotypes Against Muslims
These are some examples where some leaders have made discriminatory statements against Muslims
and it doesn t aim at Muslims only of certain region but, it points to Muslims all over the world.
Leaders are chosen by the people to represent the people, but not to create hatred and fear amongst the
people for political or any other reasons. Such statements made by great leaders have a great impact
on the beliefs of people, as we believe in our leaders and therefore even theirs words are taken into
consideration sometimes without a rational thinking. This doesn t affect just the mindset of people but
it terribly shapes the attitudes, behaviours, philosophy and even their idea of a religion. This affects
the lives of Muslims all over the world; they are not just labelled as terrorist but even treated as one.
Innocent Muslims are viewed with suspicion because of misinformation and prevalent stereotyping. ...

For most of the people, conditions are difficult and desperate. Chronic food shortages are widespread,
and starvation levels among young children are high (Ruralpoverty.org). Chad fairs poorly with regard
to the four generic factors of production. As much of Chad is positioned within the hot and dry Sahara
Desert made up of barren land, most of the country is a limiting resource. Natural resources are
limited and or under developed. As there is very little manufacturing, there is little improvement in
improving production processes for turning natural resources into consumer goods. The labor pool is
small, young and uneducated. 80% of the workforce is employed in labor intensive farming. Just 20%
of the workforce is employed in the higher skilled areas of manufacturing and providing technical
services (CIA.gov). Much of Chad s workforce is one dimensional and not able to be flexible enough
to move to other areas as training is limited and the education system is almost non existent.
Regarding capital, like other countries in poverty lacking in natural resources, Chad must import
goods and is reliant on on foreign aid. Investors are frightened by the challenging business climate in
Chad. In 2012, Chad was ranked last in the world in ease of doing business by the World Bank.
Entrepreneurship is present in Chad, however, most are black market businesses that feed on
governmental bureaucracy and corruption. Very few entrepreneurs

The Consumer Rights Act 2015
This essay will analyse the Consumer Rights Act 2015 ( CRA 2015 ) as it is a significant element of
the government s reform of consumer law in the UK. The Act has been lauded as an immense
upheaval of consumer law due to the integration of eight existing pieces of legislation into one. The
complicated regulations regarding goods and services that consumers and businesses struggle to
comprehend will no longer apply under the Act. A consumer is an individual who is not acting for the
purpose of a business and outside that individual s trade or profession. The aim of the CRA 2015 is to
provide consumers with confidence when purchasing goods and services in the modern market. The
Act intends to modernise the law, thus making it easier for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The definition of goods is given as any tangible moveable items. Shoppers are now guaranteed a full
refund up to 30 days after the purchase of the defective product. This demand for a full refund with a
fixed time limit provides better protection for consumers as the duration was previously unclear and
legitimate claims could be rejected by businesses due to prior legislation only providing refunds if
within a reasonable time. This time limit is provided for under Section 22(3) which gives the
consumer the right to reject the goods. After 30 days, retailers will be given one opportunity to repair
or replace the defective product and this is dependent on the customer. The CRA now incorporates a
three tier system to resolve any problems between the consumer and the trader. The degree and nature
of the remedies available will depend on the amount of time the consumer has owned the product or
on the type of service provided. The first step is when the goods are not satisfactory, in which
consumers are entitled to reject them, as provided under Section 22. A full refund can be claimed and
must be given without undue delay and this has been covered under Section 20. The second step
occurs when the consumer has either lost the chance or not chosen to reject the goods. Under Section
23, the consumer is entitled to claim a repair or replacement of the goods. The trader must repair or

Construction Of The Parthenon
The question of why the Parthenon was constructed has aroused debate both in the time of its
construction all the way up to the modern day. The Parthenon in Athens is one of the most impressive
pieces of architecture from the Greek world, made from Pentelic marble and some say that it enjoys
the reputation of being the most perfect Doric temple ever built (Norwich 2001: 63). The question as
to why it was built remains however and this essay will set out the main argument for the construction
of the Parthenon that it was a monument to Athenian imperialism and then move to arguing other
factors that may have made the Parthenon a religious and cultural statement for Athenians.
But first, before this question is answered we must understand the historical context behind the
construction of the Parthenon. The Parthenon that exists today was built to replace the old Parthenon
which was never fully finished due to it being destroyed when the Persians sacked the city and burned
the Acropolis to the ground levelled everything...set fire to the entire acropolis (Herodotus 8.53.2).
The Parthenon was built even though in the Oath of Platea the Greek city states decreed that they
would not rebuild that which the Persians had destroyed, therefore the Athenians had arguably
violated the Oath. The Parthenon was built during the Age of Pericles and the architects Ictinos and
Kallikrates began building the Parthenon in 447 BC under Phidias and was basically finished in 432
BC with the decorations being finished in 431 BC.
The widely held belief when it comes to the Parthenon is that it is a statement of Athenian imperialism
especially when it comes to how the building itself was funded with the use of φόρος phoros , which
we know means tribute, from the League. We can at least be sure that the reserve of the Delian League
was in fact used for the rebuilding of the Acropolis. (Meiggs 1963: 43.) Due to this it must be true that
the Parthenon was a statement of Athenian Imperialism both because the Delian League by this point
had ceased to be a League of equals and had morphed into the Athenian Empire, and that tribute, of
about 460 talents per year in the early stages of the League according to Aristides, that was meant

Compare And Contrast Mediterranean And Indian Ocean Trade
In the early post classical period, the Mediterranean Sea trade route and the Indian Ocean trade route
flourished. Although both the Mediterranean Sea trade route and the Indian Ocean Maritime trade
route persisted to deliver goods to diverse ports by way of sea, such as India s transmission of
manufactured goods, such as pottery produced by Burma, to several distinct ports, the volume and
whereabouts of each particular trade route and the development of people s characteristics due to trade
varied drastically. Both the post classical Mediterranean Sea trade route and the Indian Ocean
Maritime System route transported goods to various ports by way of water. In the Indian Ocean

In the post classical Mediterranean Sea trade route, seafarers grasped the characteristics they obtained
from their homeland tightly and did not intermingle them at various sea ports, which was due to their
constant interaction with other people. Yet, in the post classical trade routes taking place in the Indian
Ocean, the sight of other people was an extremely unlikely occasion to occur along the journey due to
distal location of land. Therefore, seafarers became intimate with foreign women at port stops. These
port wives introduced their homeland s customs and attitudes to their husbands, mixing heritages,
which would result in rich cultural diversity, commonly making children produced by the couples
multilingual, multicultural, and cosmopolitan. Since the Mediterranean Sea trade route was proximal
to land and the Indian Ocean trade route was more remote from land, sailors in the Indian Ocean
Maritime System would take up opportunities with woman from different regions, whereas the
seafarers in the Mediterranean Sea trade route preferred marriage to women from their own homeland.
The differences in culture in both the Mediterranean Sea trade route and the Indian Ocean Maritime
System are most likely due to how closely bound various

  • 3. Essay on A Lesson before Dying In the world we live in today, religion is an extremely vibrant factor, not only in the environment surrounding us but with the people we interact with as well. In Ernest J. Gaines novel, A Lesson Before Dying, it is easy to see how religion impacts the community. In a small community such as this novel depicts, religion is the driving force behind nearly every decision made in the story and can be justified solely on the individual s values. It is interesting to view religion as the most visible consistency in the novel when the main character, Grant Wiggins, is himself an atheist. Although he himself does not believe in things such as heaven or hell he is still impacted upon by the community around him. Grant, an educated man, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this instance we have a man, Jefferson, who needs help to be able to regain his dignity and die like a man. Even though Grant, an atheist, would not be helping him do so through religion, he will give him understanding of the importance of his case to the community. Religion has many faces in the novel as one would expect, but one face that rings true is the notion that through religion one can gain dignity. As you can imagine, living in the South in times such as these was certainly a detriment to African Americans such as the characters in the novel, but why is it then that African Americans put, more often than not, so much clout to the community and its church? For simple reasons of course, because inside the church is where one can gain back the dignity that is lost nearly everyday through racism. Church is the only place where anyone can be a leader. Church is the place to express yourself freely and come together to share a ceremony where racism is not present. Most importantly church is the place to recognize and evaluate the lives of so many people that are continually being marginalized. This can be seen as another strong factor on how religion is central to the community. For example, people that become leaders inside the church are looked at with more respect, such as Miss Emma, Tante Lou, and Reverend Ambrose; three very active ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Summary Of The Truth Of Fact By Ted Chong As I read The Truth of Fact, the Truth of Feeling, by Ted Chiang, I started to make connections from modern day life in the United States to the two examples of lifestyles and learning that are described in this piece. I started to think about how much technology has, and does, influence the average North American s education and lifestyle and how that has changed significantly over the past few decades. I also started to think about how the device that is described in the reading would be beneficial and hurtful to our society and what would happen if someone was able to hack into the storage systems of all of the information. I believe that advances in technology for personal use will soon get out of hand, if they have not already, and if we let ourselves rely on technology too much we as a human race will digress. In tenth grade, as I was about to take the PSAT to start the college process, I was instructed to write a pledge saying that I was the person whose name was written on the test in cursive. I believe that there was about two or three other kids who did not throw their arms in horror that you had to write something in cursive! There were many questions of How do you make a t ? The loss of cursive is something that has been a side effect of personal technology and who knows? Cursive is not the only victim that has fallen due to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 5. Commonplace Book Report What I have noticed through most of the entries in my commonplace book (especially the two stated above) is that I mostly write down something when it induces a negative emotion from me the quotes that rile me up and make me upset. And usually these are the quotes that remind me of the hardships faced by women. As a woman, sexism is a prevalent issue in my life, so when I fight against it, I am fighting for myself. When I came across the first quote, my mind instantaneously conjured up an image of a mentally exhausted person who was beyond any point of functionality. Unsurprisingly, the person I visualized was a woman. I ve noticed this pattern of associating pain and struggle with women is a recurring theme in my life (and is also outlined in the second quote). I know the first quote was used in the context of the gulag and the agony of its prisoners, yet for me, it can also be applied to women, especially those who are victims of abuse. I find this quote raw and emotional. It has come to symbolize women when they are completely broken, even if this was not the context in which it was written. It shows what they can be tuned into. How in certain circumstances they are forced to act on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It captures why we need feminism. No matter how hard we try, it seems like women will never be leveled with their male counterparts. Women are always seen as the ones that need protection, the ones that need the jacket when it s cold. And this frustrates me to no end. I want women to scream and be taken seriously. I want us to be in a position of power and be terrifying, be something beyond the limitations of our physical beauty. I wrote down both these quotes because they reminded me of how the world is more favorable towards men. And to me, these quotes are undeniably connected, if only by a Gossamer thread, by the theme of women in pain despite their original ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Use Of Technology And Social Media The use of technology and social media makes our life a lot easier. Social media and technology play a huge role in our everyday life and friendship. In today s world, people, mostly teenagers use social media and technology every day to communicate and interact with others. Technology gives us an opportunity to connect with anybody we want from anywhere we are, saving us time. According to Daily News 84 percent of people worldwide say they couldn t go a single day without their mobile device in their hand. That means almost everybody uses their phone in order to communicate and stay updated. I use my phone every single day and I cannot imagine living my life without a smartphone. I go on social media websites every day to connect with friends and see what they are doing. It is the fastest way to interact with friends and I love technology for that. A couple decades ago people didn t have good communication devices therefore it was much harder for them to connect with each other. Technology makes it much more convenient and easy for us to use, saving us a lot of time. Having technology makes our life easier and at the same time virtual. It is very convenient and just normal for our society to use it everyday. In my opinion modern technology provides more options and opportunities to connect with our friends. I really don t think that technology and social media ruin our friendships like most people would say. It all depends on how you use it. Technology and Social media ... In order to accomplish this the researchers used partially digested DNA fragments from a Doberman pinscher to create a large insert bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) canine genomic library. PCR testing, chromosome walking, homology mapping, DNA sequencing, etc., was performed on the canine model and compared to a human model. Comparison of gene maps for several affected and non affected animals allowed the sequence to be narrowed down into a region likely to be involved with narcolepsy. The researchers were able to determine that mutations in the hypocretin (orexin) receptor 2 gene (Hcrtr2) resulted in canine narcolepsy. On a surface level, this article was first chosen because it was one of the most frequently cited articles involving narcolepsy. However upon reading it, one can see why it has great significance. The paper established that hypocretins play a major role as neurotransmitters in sleep. We hear a lot about the crime rates going up and down from the media and they tend to expand on specific types of criminal behavior that might be of interest to the public. When politicians are running for office we are told that the crime rates are down due to the tough crime policies that they have been implemented. Citizens seek crime rates for assistance in determining if the area they reside in is safe. By police agencies using this form of statistical classifying, there is a major loss in the data of the lower crimes on the scale. A complete total of certain crimes are not included in the statistics creating several inaccuracies in the totals. The UCR policy does not require all crimes to be reported to the state. Violations of the General City Ordinance and Vehicle and Traffic Law are considered too low for the hierarchy scale. These types of crimes are never included in the monthly submission and we generally never hear about them. Since crime statistics begin at the forefront of the police department, the police officer, this leaves a lot of room for unreliability. Police officers create crime data by completing and submitting crime reports and arrest reports. These reports include all of the pertinent information necessary for the committed crime(s) for a specific incident. There are times when police officers fail to complete written reports of certain crimes or they downgrade the offense of a report to a less serious offense. Meanwhile, some police reports are over rated in the seriousness of certain offenses. At the end of each officer s shift the reports and arrest records are submitted to the appropriate unit or division of occurrence. I have always been told to figure out what you like to do and then make a career out of it. Eight years ago, armed with this bit of philosophy, I set out to find out what I liked to do. • 13. Malaria And Its Effects On The World Health Organization Since it was first discovered in 1880 by French army surgeon Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran, Malaria has caused the suffering of millions each year. According to the World Health Organization It was estimated that in 2015 there were nearly 214 million cases of Malaria worldwide, half a million of which were lethal. Malaria is caused by a parasite which is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito. Although cases of Malaria are most common in the sub Saharan Africa region, it has affected people on a global scale. Efforts to combat Malaria range from insecticide treated bed nets to indoor residual spraying. Although both methods are viable, they do not have to potential to eradicate Malaria. The most effective means of combating Malaria is through genetic modification of mosquitoes. By tinkering with the genes of the very creature who transmits the parasite, we can ultimately eliminate the disease before it even poses a threat. • 15. Susan Whitfield Life Along The Silk Road Summary In Susan Whitfield s Life Along the Silk Road, there is no central argument pushing the book in one specific direction. There is, however, a slice into the daily lives of ten different characters. By dividing the story into characters rather than chapters in a book, the author gains the ability to tell what daily life would have actually looked like, from multiple perspectives. A story that would transcend different social classes, ranks, genders, and ethnic groups. The book covers lifestyles from the life of luxuries led by Taihe, the Chinese princess and the years of hardship of Seg Lahton, a Tibetan soldier. The story flows through all of this, weaving it all together through the Silk Road. There is a drawback to this tactic. To write a book like this there are a significant amount of assumptions made, causing the reader to wonder what was fact and what was fiction. Throughout their argument Just Speech uses countless examples and what he understands to be the truth in order to back his claims while Unjust Speech tears it apart using clever contradictions and turning Just Speech s words against him. The topics of this debate discipline, piety, tradition are ones that transcend the ages and that are very much relevant still today. Moderation yields many benefits including strength and a good reputation; however, indulgence is easier and what makes life worth living if not the pleasures we allow ourselves. During the argument between Just and Unjust Speech, Just Speech explains that one of the virtues he will teach him is respect; respect for one s elders and respect for one s father (ln. 993 995). The closest Unjust Speech comes to discussing the relationship between father and son is when he gives the example of Zeus overthrowing his father (ln. 904). When Pheidippides begins to beat his father, he also explains why his actions are just and lawful, turning the words of his father against him to strengthen his argument. This argument goes on for awhile with Pheidippides using the weaker speech to gain the upper hand on his father, this is similar to how Unjust Speech beats Just Speech in their argument earlier in the book. After a long debate Pheidippides finally forces his father into a corner and makes him admit that he is wrong, Strepsiades gives in seeing no alternative; this is a direct callback to how Just Speech threw his cloak to the audience angered by his defeat. • 18. Reductive Materialism Reductive Materialism: Reductive materialism is a sub theory or a version of Physicalism. It suggests that sensations of the mind correlate exactly to physical movements of the brain. In other words, every thought or experience which occurs in your mind, can be found as activity in your brain. This does not mean however, that the mind and the brain are the same thing, just that they are both different experiences of the same thing. For example, a neuroscientist may be able to study your brain activity as you experience it in your mind. A problem with this theory when applied, is that two different people having the same thought, will have the identical brain activity. But the thoughts of one person are subjective to their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However if these experiences are intangible, then they can t be exactly the same as the functioning of the brain, which is a tangible substance. The Two Marys analogy demonstrates this dispute of reductive materialism, as once the Mary has learned something by an experience or qualia , then that experience can t be a physical event in the brain. Eliminative Materialism: Eliminative Materialism argues that everything we believe about minds and conciousness does not exist (including belief itself), on the grounds that it cannot be empirically proved. The claim is that the understood laws or generalisations we use when we use terms of the mind , are false. For example, if someone talks about their feeling of pain, then they would call this statement Folk Psychology , meaning that the words are just used habitually and don t have any true meaning. They say that the problem is in the language we use to make sense of what we can t prove. This idea however, is not consistent, as it disputes the belief in anything, meaning the belief of eliminativism in itself cannot be believed. Similarly, believing in Nihilism is contradictory. Another problem with the argument is that it assumes empirical methods of experiment are always accurate and consistent, when we know that this is not always the case, and some physical events in the world are not caused by physical substances. Across the globe, various totalitarian regimes were emerging, such as Mussolini, Stalin, and Hitler. These powerful leaders began to militarize and expand their borders. The U.S. claimed they would not recognize new territories because it violated the Kellogg Briand Pact that made war illegal. FDR would later deliver his famous Quarantine Speech regarding the Japanese invasion of China in which he encouraged the peace loving nations to take action against military expansionism (Doc. 1). FDR also called for a quarantine of Japan through economic embargoes. At this point, Roosevelt is still staying neutral, but is putting emphasis on morally siding against fascist nations. This speech was the first action that ticked the isolationists off, as FDR seemed to be hinting towards internationalism. Later that year, Japan would go on to sink an American gunboat, the Panay. Japan quickly apologized and neutrality was kept once again. After war broke out and France quickly fell, Britain was desperate for help. Roosevelt responded by trading 50 destroyers for eight valuable bases, a negotiation known as the Destroyer Deal (Doc. 2). However, despite American leaders such as George Washington and James Madison warning of factionalism, the country would be divided by political parties arising out of the Northern and Southern states of the union. By the time Walt Whitman wrote Songs of Myself in 1855, tensions in the United States created by factionalism were at a high and were constantly elevating. In writing Songs of Myself , Whitman sought to help mend some of the wounds created by factionalism by seeking to bring together Americans whom factionalism had rendered alien to one another and by teaching to believe in oneself rather than the beliefs of political parties. Truths In The Preface Of Animal Farm By George Orwell Many people chose not to believe the reality behind Soviet communism and all of the terrible things that were happening in Russia when Joseph Stalin was in control. In the Preface of Animal Farm, Russell Baker stated that Orwell was that political figure that all politicians feared (Baker, ix) and that he insisted on the truth even when the truth was most inconvenient (Baker, ix). Russell Baker s assertion is proven to be true in multiple spots throughout the book. Some events that happen in George Orwell s book, prove certain truths to be factual because they are based off of things that actually happened with Soviet Communism. By proving these to be true, politicians fear him because he makes people open their eyes to truths about the world they would rather be blind to instead. The first truth George Orwell tells in his book Animal Farm, is that brainwashing in the form of propaganda works. He shows this truth when Napoleon uses Squealer as a form of propaganda that promotes himself and makes everything else look bad in the eyes of the animals on the farm. Squealer uses logos when talking to the animals telling them of yet another lie about Snowball, Jones s shot only grazed him. I could show you this in his own writing, if you were able to read it (Orwell, 90). Just because you believe a person to be guilty of X amount of crimes does not mean he is guilty. If the evidence is shaky and the defendant is clean, justice is determined through what is presented. • 35. Construction Of The Parthenon The question of why the Parthenon was constructed has aroused debate both in the time of its construction all the way up to the modern day. The Parthenon in Athens is one of the most impressive pieces of architecture from the Greek world, made from Pentelic marble and some say that it enjoys the reputation of being the most perfect Doric temple ever built (Norwich 2001: 63). The question as to why it was built remains however and this essay will set out the main argument for the construction of the Parthenon that it was a monument to Athenian imperialism and then move to arguing other factors that may have made the Parthenon a religious and cultural statement for Athenians. But first, before this question is answered we must understand the historical context behind the construction of the Parthenon. The Parthenon that exists today was built to replace the old Parthenon which was never fully finished due to it being destroyed when the Persians sacked the city and burned the Acropolis to the ground levelled everything...set fire to the entire acropolis (Herodotus 8.53.2). The Parthenon was built even though in the Oath of Platea the Greek city states decreed that they would not rebuild that which the Persians had destroyed, therefore the Athenians had arguably violated the Oath. The Parthenon was built during the Age of Pericles and the architects Ictinos and Kallikrates began building the Parthenon in 447 BC under Phidias and was basically finished in 432 BC with the decorations being finished in 431 BC. The widely held belief when it comes to the Parthenon is that it is a statement of Athenian imperialism especially when it comes to how the building itself was funded with the use of φόρος phoros , which we know means tribute, from the League. We can at least be sure that the reserve of the Delian League was in fact used for the rebuilding of the Acropolis. (Meiggs 1963: 43.) Due to this it must be true that the Parthenon was a statement of Athenian Imperialism both because the Delian League by this point had ceased to be a League of equals and had morphed into the Athenian Empire, and that tribute, of about 460 talents per year in the early stages of the League according to Aristides, that was meant ...
