Lewis s Mere Christianity With Its Complex Themes And...
After reflecting on C.S. Lewis s Mere Christianity with its complex themes and wording, I thought
that reading N.T. Wright s Simply Jesus would be an understandable breath of fresh air. However this
book raised more questions in my mind and beliefs than Mere Christianity ever did. Wright asks a lot
of poignant questions in the book in regards to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and in turn triggers
even more questions in his readers. He captures the nature of a 21st century Christian perfectly. Like it
or not we are a doubting group who question everything in our society whether that be politics,
relationships, or religion.
While reading Part One of Simply Jesus I had a nagging thought growing in the back of my mind.
With every page I read it became stronger and more prominent until it was a clearly formed question;
why did God not prepare the world for the coming of Christ better? Now of course I know that there
were prophesies and foreshadowing of Christ but my question is not why did God not say there would
be a savior, because He did, but rather why did He not give the people some more information. Ever
since I was a child I have heard over and over again that the people of Israel did not believe that Jesus
was the Messiah was because they were expecting something else. Even Wright says on page one of
Simply Jesus, He was not the King they expected . I just cannot help but wonder why God never told
the people what to expect. How hard would it have been to tell the

Losing a Language Explication Essay
W.S. Merwin immediately sets a tone for Losing a Language in the title, hinting at the lament like
characteristic of the poem. In fact, the title is not supposed to be a metaphor or even contain a hidden
meaning that the reader must deduce by reading on. The poem is exactly what the title suggests:
language and words, and thus communication, has been lost. Merwin creates a nostalgic and sad tone
to emphasize the loss and quickly establishes the direction of the poem using simple diction. He
carries this simple language, along with the mournful tone, into the rest of the work and does not stray
from the subject. This allows the central idea, the loss of language, to not only persist throughout the
piece but to become the dominant thought ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A second conflict introduced in the first couplet is the gap between the old and the young due to the
loss or change of language. The speaker states that the old still remember and contrasts this with the
young, who have fewer words. In the fifth couplet, we see a similar situation with parents and
children. The speaker gives us two ends of a spectrum to demonstrate the distance that the change in
language has created. We see a physical representation of this with the line, farther and farther away.
The gap is also represented in the sixth and ninth couplets, particularly in the lines we are wrong and
dark / in the eyes of the new owners. By referring to one side as we and the other as them, new
owners, or somebody, we can see two sides and that what was once familiar to the speaker is now
replaced by something foreign (line 21) and an us vs. them gap is formed. Because the speaker is
direct and clear, we are able to recognize the nostalgic tone simply because of what the speaker is
explicitly telling us. However, the structure of the poem also contributes to the tone. There are no
punctuations throughout the entire poem, yet we still read it slow enough to create a dramatic and sad
mood. The poem is divided into fourteen couplets, each with a substantial gap between them. At the
end of a couplet, we are forced to slow down and fully pause before moving on to a new section. In
addition, most of the lines are complete clauses

Personal Technology ( Smart Phones And Smartwatches )
Continuous Monitoring Plan
Work Settings
Distractions
Personal Technology (Smart Phones and Smartwatches)
To mitigate this distraction, a time matrix will be administered for the use of personal communication
devices. During work hours phones and other non work related technology will be put away. Break
times and lunch times are the only times allocated for the use of personal devices.
Social Media
Unless authorized social media access will be limited to only to employee s personal devices.
Management has the authority to dictate who can be on social media sites during business hours. If
social media is one of the organizations media outlets management will select a group of employees to
manage it. Those group of employees will only be allowed on the social media sites they are assigned
and will only participate in company related transactions.
Instant Messaging (IM)
IM will be used for small, quick conversations. IM should be screened prior to answering them. If the
IM is not of importance then it will be ignored and viewed later.
Work Environment
If needed find a quiet place to go so you can regain your focus. If the noise at your desk is too much to
bare you can wear noise cancelling headphones so you are not easily distracted.
Other People
Make your work space less hospitable. Remove extra chairs so people don t get comfortable and try
and stay longer than they need to. Meet people outside your work space when they come by so you
can regulate how long you want

Are Environmental Factors, Genetic Patterns, Or Previous
Are environmental factors, genetic patterns, or previous experiences responsible for every single
action people commit in life? Why bothering in telling the truth to others when everything is justified
by a certain response to some kind of stimuli? Many philosophers and psychologists around the world
have been studying the human behavior for several years. Most of them have agreed on the way
people react to things in life such as love, hate, truth, and lies. As a matter of fact, various theories
have been developed when it comes to justify human behavior. These theories happen to explain the
relationship between the body and mind of human beings from different perspectives. Just to mention
one, we have Behaviorism. Behaviorism, ethics, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So, what kind of human behavior that is?
Ethics, on the other hand, also defined as moral philosophy, encloses the meaning of what is wrong
and right in life. Questions arise from this term such as what s the best way for me to go through this
situation? How can I end up being the least damaged? What s the best way for me to live in this world
without being hurt? If I lie, only this time, would it be wrong or right? Everything goes around one
self. Then, we have the term psychological egoism where every person is being motivated by self
interest and well being, without caring about others. Therefore, lying to others in order to achieve a
certain benefit becomes a self ethical psychological egoism, in other words, if I m going to be fine and
won t get hurt after lying, then it s right for me to do it no matter what the consequences will be.
Philosophers like Kant condemned any kind of lying. They use to say that lying, even if it was the
only way possible to save oneself from some situation, was never ethically permissible. How right is it
to be admitted in a hospital almost dying from some kind of unknown condition and lie about anything
in your daily life that can be relevant to your doctor in order to diagnose what you have going on
inside you? Why would you lie to your mother when something went wrong and you could not do
things the way she told you to? Why to lie about pregnancy if it s not illegal? What to lie about sex if

Sexual Norms In The Ruined Maid By Thomas Hardy
The Ruined Maid was written by Thomas Hardy, who back in the Victorian days was all about
exploring into the sexual norms. Being ruined in those days meant to have sexual affairs outside your
marriage or to lose your virginity before getting married which was frowned upon back then. The
ruined maid in the poem was a young girl who became a rich man s mistress to escape her own
poverty. Her un ruined friend, who still is a poor country farmer envies her ruined friend, You left us
in tatters, without shoes or socks, Tired of digging potatoes, and spudding up docks; And now you ve

Spinal Cord Injury Report
1 Speci c Aims
Spinal cord injury (SCI) represents a major clinical, social and economical problem that has currently
no cure. In the United States, an estimated of 276,000 people live with a SCI [1]. It is now widely
accepted that in individuals with incomplete spinal cord lesions there is some preservation of sensory
and/or motor functions caudal to the level of injury that o er a pathway to recover some locomotor
functions [2].
Increasing experimental evidence of axonal sprouting, long term changes in spinal re exes and
synapses, and modi cation of synaptic strength represent the neurological bases for spinal cord
neuroplasticity [3].
In spite of many studies on animals and human subjects, the mechanisms that promote neuroplasticity

As previously shown [19], [23], there is a voluntary response in incomplete SCI due to epidural
stimulation and stepping training sessions, thus we expect to see a voluntary response in all groups.
Due to the motor tasks proposed, we anticipate that the voluntary response is augmented in both
intervention groups compared to the control group, and it is also increased within each group over
time.
Potential Problems and Alternative Strategies: Due to the limitations encountered after a spinal cord
injury and the variability in responses due to injury level, the training protocols proposed might be
challenging.
Full body weight standing and increased load bearing during walking on an inclined treadmill would
be one of the challenges encountered due to the rapid bone density decrease and muscle atrophy in the
rst two years after a spinal cord lesion [49]. To overcome this, we target individuals at the beginning
of the chronic stage of a SCI (6 months) when this degradation is not advanced. This intervention

Taking a Look at Capital Punishment
William Furman murdered William Micke on August 11, 1967 in Savannah, Georgia. Furman was
unemployed, and only had a sixth grade education. William Furman became depressed, and started to
commit theft for food and money. Furman was caught stealing several times, but was only given a
light sentence. At 2 a.m. on August 11, William Furman broke into the house of William Micke, while
Micke and his five children were sleeping. William Micke heard a noise and went downstairs to see
where the noise was coming from. He spotted Furman, and Furman ran for the back door. William
Furman tripped over an exposed wire and the gun in Furman s hand went off. The bullet hit William
Ficke, killing him instantly. The Furman v. Georgia case started in the district court and then moved
up to the appellate court. Furman was sentenced to death by the appellate court after a one day trial.
He made the argument that his eighth and fourteenth amendment rights were being violated. The case
moved up to the Supreme Court of the United States. In the trial, Furman had four main arguments:
most western nations had abolished capital punishment because it was an unsuccessful way to deter
crime; juries only handed out about 100 death penalties each year, and only about 50 prisoners were
sentenced to death so capital punishment was not being issued objectively; national prison records
stated that executions almost always involved black prisoners; and the only reason why capital
punishment had

Explore Shakespeare s Presentation of the Three Great...
During the scenes depicting the Battle of Actium, Shakespeare s presentation of Octavius Caesar,
Mark Antony and Cleopatra cause the balance of audience sympathy to change between the three great
leaders. Audience sympathy never lies by any real amount with Caesar, and in Acts III and IV, the
audience feels increasingly alienated from him. This is largely due to his calculated, ruthless style of
leadership, which becomes more evident during the battle. Caesar judges wisely, and is successful
because of this, and by Act III, Scene 7 he has already defeated Toryne – previously one of Antony s
territories. In Act III, Scene 12, Shakespeare presents Caesar as a callous and cruel leader, as he hears
the requests of Antony for peace and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, though unwisely, Antony suggests a feast for their comfort , and this summarises his leadership,
as he is no longer presented by Shakespeare as a great and powerful leader, but as a kind and generous
man. Caesar appears to be a heartless leader, detached from the people, whereas Antony shows his
emotions and, thus, appears more human, which causes the audience to sympathise with him. In Act
IV, Scenes 5 and 8, Shakespeare presents Antony as a great leader once again, as he defeats Caesar s
land army, winning an unexpected victory and causing the audience to venerate him once more,
instead of feeling pity for his predicament. However, this triumph is short lived, and in Act IV, Scene
12, Antony s navy surrenders to Caesar without a fight, deserting Antony, leaving him feeling
betrayed, and, once again, the audience sympathy shifts even further towards Antony. Cleopatra
develops as a character during this sequence, becoming more sensible and less melodramatic in
response to trivial problems. In Act III, Scene 7, Enobarbus tells Cleopatra not to be involved in the
battle itself, saying that: If we

Pros And Cons Of Exhaust Headers
Many muscle car owners grapple with the decision to replace the factory exhaust manifolds with
headers. For those planning to [take part in a survivor class competition] the choice is obvious to keep
the original equipment. However, casual owners with vintage muscle cars from the 60s and 70s, enjoy
the ferocious sound and power from headers. Here we ll talk about the pros and cons of upgrading the
stock exhaust parts with aftermarket solutions. We ll also discuss why these upgrades cause problems
and don t produce the desired results. What are Exhaust Headers They design high performance
exhaust headers to increase engine efficiency. This is accomplished by allowing the free flowing exit
of exhaust gases after combustion is complete. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This reduces back pressure, but can interfere with other auto parts. Let me provide a nightmare
example. On the [1970s Dodge Dart Swinger] with a 340 small block, installing headers is difficult.
Buying a complete kit designed by a Mopar specialist for this model Dart doesn t make it easier. The
first problem is you have to lift the engine with a hoist to install them. Interference with the upper
control arms and the tie rods is yet another issue. After completing the operation, the problems began
to surface. To clear some suspension parts the headers had now become the lowest part of the
automobile. After going over a few speed bumps the tubes that serviced the front cylinders were
completely smashed closed. Instead of increasing efficiency the end result was exactly the opposite.
Reasons to Pass on High performance Headers If reviewing the above information didn t talk you out
of installing aftermarket headers, I have a couple more issues to make clear. Classic muscle car
enthusiasts keep the automobile original to preserve the value. If you do install aftermarket high
performance parts label and save the original factory

The Gun Laws And Banning The United States
Amar Redzepagic 10/3/15
The gun laws and bans in the United States are not helping to make things better or decrease our crime
rate or solve anything instead we need better background checks to make sure we are not giving guns
to the wrong people. A study published in the Harvard journal of law and public policy discovered that
the nations with more guns tend to have a lower crime rate (Snyder, Michael. N.p., 12 Aug. 2013.
Web. 26 Mar. 2015.). This proves that people tend not to commit a crime if they know that people
around them are armed and ready to fire also they know that if they go to a country with a lower
percentage of gun ownership they are not taking as much risk because there aren t that many guns in
the area.
Are all these bans and laws really necessary? The nine European nations with the lowest rate of gun
ownership have a murder rate that is three times higher than the nine European nations with the
highest rate of gun ownership (Snyder, Michael. N.p., 12 Aug. 2013. Web. 26 Mar. 2015), I think guns
are actually helping us, overall guns are used eighty times more to prevent crimes rather than used in
them. In the United States about 200,000 women protect themselves against sexual assault using guns
every year. (Snyder, Michael. N.p., 12 Aug. 2013. Web. 26 Mar. 2015). The city of Kennesaw,Georgia

How Did Mexican Architecture Influence The Spanish...
Arts and literature Spanish paintings became popular during the Romanesque period. During the
middle ages, many aspects of art became important like the manuscripts that were mainly written for
religious purposes. The manuscripts during the medieval period depicted the life of the people then
like how they dressed, what food they ate and their many ceremonies. There were many manuscripts
written by a Spanish king called Alfonso X the Castilian King. There was a transition in the history of
Spanish art from the Romanesque to gothic art. The Romanesque art had to do with miniature pieces
of art but during the gothic period many of the acts produced then were stained glasses. Spanish

At a point in history a lot of moors occupied a great portion of Spain and they created some beautiful
architecture with a Spanish twist to it which includes the great mosque of Cordoba which has a church
embedded in it. Throughout history the Spanish architecture has been shaped by the changing trends
in Europe. In the start of the 12th century the gothic style was introduced which greatly influenced the
styles in the buildings like the cathedral of Toledo, Burgos and Leon. The renaissance trend in Europe
greatly influenced the Spanish architecture. Spanish architectures were not just about buildings they
were also a means of communication. Each architecture that was created reflected the community s
values, pursuits and culture. Each Spanish building erected showed the dominance of a cultural group
in the community and the geographical area it was erected in showed the extent of their power and
dominance. Such buildings often bore an identifying sign for example the sign of a church was
different from that of a mosque. The church s sign was significantly that of a cross while that of a
mosque bore that of a crescent moon and a star and it signified the significance or dominance of a
religious group or cultural group in that area. The middle ages were an exciting period in the history of
Spanish architecture and it was at that time there was the entrance of the moors which means Muslim
in Spanish. And there was a clash between Muslims and Christians in that time of history. At that time
the Christians and Muslims emerged their cultures together to form the Mozarabic architecture. It was
not uncommon to see a church being converted to a mosque and vice versa. The great church of
Cordoba with a church embedded in it was a good opportunity to see how Christians and Muslims saw

Ghazali Conditional Statement
Al Ghazali begins his discussion of theodicy with a conditional statement that will frame the rest of
his one hundred line discussion contained in his Ihya text. This conditional statement has as its
antecedent a series of eight hypotheticals which are aimed at creating a hypothetical multitude of
immensely knowledgeable and wise creatures. The antecedent contains the following hypotheticals:
all creatures being as intelligent and knowledgeable as the most intelligent and knowledgeable human,
God giving each creature the maximum knowledge and wisdom that their souls can handle, God then
giving each creature the combined knowledge of all creatures, God revealing to each creature the
consequences of things, God teaching each creature the mysteries of the transcendent world, God
teaching each creature about divine favor, God making each creature aware of final punishments, God
making each creature aware of good and evil and of benefit and harm. All of these components of the
antecedent serve to set up a scenario in which there exists a multitude of extremely wise and
knowledgeable creatures. These components are presented in lines one through sixteen of the passage
quoted by Ormsby on his pages 38 41 of Theodicy in Islamic Thought. If the conditions of the
antecedent were met, says Al Ghazali, then another conditional claim would be the case. This second
conditional claim, which is the consequent of the first conditional claim and is contained in lines
sixteen through nineteen, has as its antecedent God asking all of the now hyper wise and hyper
knowledgeable creatures to work together in creating the best possible arrangement of this world and
of the transcendent world. If God asked this of the creatures in the hypothetical, Al Ghazali says in
lines nineteen through twenty four that the creatures would produce an arrangement that is exactly
identical to the way in which God has arranged His creation as it truly is. Al Ghazali, in lines twenty
four through twenty seven goes so far as to say that the product would not have subtracted or added as
little as a gnat s wing and that it would not have altered the position of a single particle of dust. The
product of the creatures labors also would not differ from

Tenure in America Essay
Although there are many varying opinions on what revisions should be made to the tenure system in
America, I believe that even though there are many complaints, Tenure needs to be maintained in
order to promote academic freedom and educational security. Tenure is defined by Mathew Finkin as
At the expiration of a period of probation, commonly not to exceed six years of full time service, a
faculty member is either to be accorded tenure or to be given a terminal appointment for the ensuing
academic year. Thereafter, the professor can be discharged only for just cause or other permissible
circumstances and only after a hearing before a body of his or her academic peers (Finkin 3). Tenure,
in recent years, has become a point of heated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unions don t grant tenure administrators do. Too many school boards and superintendents attack
tenure rather than hold their own managers accountable for hiring and supervising teachers and, if
necessary, removing those who don t make the grade. Tenure is granted by the board of education on
recommendation of the superintendent but many schools do a poor job of evaluating and supporting
teachers...Tenure s not about protecting bad teachers; it s about protecting good teachers. What would
happen to teachers without tenure? They could and would be fired for virtually any reason. It s not
hard to imagine teachers being dismissed because they failed the daughter of an influential
businessman or because the school board president s nephew needed a job. In these fiscally troubled
times, what would stop a school board from replacing a veteran teacher at the top of the pay scale with
a first year teacher simply to save money? Tenure is the first line of defense against attacks on
academic freedom. Teachers can engage their students in a free exchange of ideas only if they are
protected from arbitrary dismissal for doing so. Tenure prevents school boards from arbitrarily
dismissing teachers for holding political, religious or social views with which they disagree.[Tenure]
protects academic freedom the way the First Amendment protects freedom of the press (NYSUT).

Mezzanine Debt Another Level To Consider
Mezzanine debt is used by companies that are cash flow positive to fund: further growth through
expansion projects; acquisitions; recapitalizations; and, management and leveraged buyouts. When
mezzanine debt is used in conjunction with senior debt it reduces the amount of equity required in the
business. As equity is the most expensive form of capital, it is most cost effective to create a capital
structure that secures the most funding, offers the lowest cost of capital, and maximizes return on
equity. Mezzanine debt has been around for over 30 years, however its use in Western Canada and the
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although it makes up a portion of a company s total available capital, mezzanine financing is critical
to growing companies and in succession planning in recent years. The gap in funding between senior
debt and equity is common for the following reasons: 1) accounts receivable, inventories and fixed
assets are being discounted at greater rates than in the past for fear that their values will not be realized
in the future; 2) many balance sheets now contain significant intangible assets, and, 3) as a result of
defaults and regulatory pressure, banks have placed ceilings on the amount of total debt a company
can obtain. While additional liquidity can be obtained from equity investors, equity is the most
expensive source of capital. Further, equity capital, by its nature, dilutes existing shareholders. As a
result, mezzanine debt can be an attractive alternative way to obtain much needed capital.
Capital Structures
While there are no hard and fast rules for optimizing a company s capital structure, companies that are

Why The United States Should Convert To The Metric System
Introduction
An interesting fact is that only 3 countries don t use the metric system. Another interesting fact is that
at one point Canada did not use metric. The Metric system Is a system of measurement that is as said
earlier is used in most countries. The Us is one of the few that doesn t use metric. The reason this is
because most countries deemed it suitable, but the U.S still uses Imperial measurement. In short the
United States should convert to the metric system because conversion from standard to metric is
difficult, the metric system is more precise, and people already use metric in the US anyway.
The first reason is conversion from standard to metric is difficult. This is because a miscalculation in
converting between metric and imperial. NASA lost a Mars orbiter. This all happened because the
other team used imperial. A plane from air Canada crashed because of converting error. This happened
because the plane was the company s first metric measurements and the gage was not working. They
used ripsticks to see how much fuel the plane took but conversion to volume to weight went wrong
and they crashed. As stated above conversion from standard to metric is difficult for those reasons. ...

public guilt everyone gets to know you business. Hester has to stand in front of the whole town and

Characteristics Of A Business Entity
=Characteristics of Business Entities=
Before we can review each type of business entity, we need to cover a few characteristics that may
differentiate each business structure:
Liability : Liability refers to how much financial responsibility will be held by a business or individual
in the event of business losses. In business terms, this often means who will be held financially
responsible in the event that debts cannot be repaid or the business suffers losses from an action by a
court of law. This issue brings about two distinct concepts called unlimited liability or limited liability.
Unlimited liability means that the owners of the business will be held financially liable for loses
incurred by the business. What this ultimately means is that creditors or a court of law can seize an
individual s personal assets (their personal home, personal car, personal bank accounts etc.) in order to
pay debts that were incurred by the business. Limited liability, on the other hand, means that often
times the owners or investors will only be held liable up to the extent of their investment. However,
courts can still seize personal assets of investors if fraud has occurred that lead to the failure of the
business.
Double Taxation : For certain business structures, primarily corporations, the profits of the entity will
be taxed a minimum of two times. When a corporation earns profit, the corporation will be levied a
corporate income tax on those profits. If the

The Social Cognitive Theory Of Ptsd

information processing theory by Foa, Steketee, and Rothbaum (Mullen, Holliday, Morris, Raja, and
Surís 2014). This theory states PTSD emerges from the development of fear in one s memory that
creates avoidance behavior and provokes one to escape these memories. Mental fear builds stimuli,
responses, and meaning elements (Mullen, Holliday, Morris, Raja, and Surís 2014). Therefore
anything that is associated with the trauma may provoke fear that leads to the concept of escaping and
avoidance behavior. In individuals with PTSD, the fear is known to be easily accessible. When the
fear is activated by the reminders of one s trauma, one builds intrusive symptoms due to the
information trying to process and enter one s consciousness. In order for an individual to avoid these
feelings and thoughts, one tries to avoid it which leads to the avoidance symptoms of PTSD which
include yet are not limited to depression, alienation (Mullen, Holliday, Morris, Raja, and Surís 2014).
Emotional Processing Theory states the repetitive exposure of trauma in a safe environment such as a
therapeutic setting, helps reduce PTSD symptoms by calming and addressing one s fear (Mullen,

Tommy Douglass Religion
Being a Baptist preacher, Tommy Douglas was a religious man. His religion ruled many choices in his
early life. Douglas would spend every Sunday in the Weyburn church preaching the gospel, and on the
weekdays, he would do what he could to help the suffering of poor. As at the time, the great economic
depression had it s grip on Saskatchewan. Furthermore, Tommy Douglas was also a pragmatist.
Instead of thinking on the ideals, he thought practically. He was a calculating man. Many people
despised his views, not his religious views, but his political ones. As a member of the Cooperative

Cooperative Commonwealth Foundation (CCF), a socialist political party in Canada. Which later
became the New Democratic Party (NDP). During the 1934 Saskatchewan elections, he was
unsuccessful, but he did not give up. At the 1935 federal election, he ran as a member of the CCF. This
time he was successful. During his time in Parliament, he spent much of the time advocating for civil

In 1944, Tommy Douglas decided to resign from the Parliament and run for the Saskatchewan general

Native American Culture
Native Americans have a complex relationship to American culture because they are the only
indigenous people of the United States and modern Native Americans are still members of tribes and
nations that have their own sovereignty and rights. Since the first ship landed on American soil,
European took control of Native Americans visual sovereignty and how Native American could
express their culture. The only way to best represent a culture is having someone from their own
culture being able to express themselves. Historically, Native Americans have faced changelings in
controlling their own visually sovereignty in film and other media with stereotypical portrayals that
benefited the white middle class Americans. As Native Americans began to fight back against these
portrayals and gaining their own political sovereignty, films began to be produced by Native
Americans, such as Imagining Indians and Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner, for them to best represent
their culture and way of life. When Native Americans first started being shown in films and other
media, they were used to portray stereotypical white ideas which as how they appear and act with
others. As seen in Professor Boger s lecture (10/25), the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show starting in 1883
restaged historical battles that hired numerous Native American performers. After the success of the
show, many more motion pictures and feature films were created with the idea of Hollywood

Essay On Charles Lindbergh
Charles Lindbergh (commonly known for the Lindbergh Effect) was one of, if not the, most important
celebrity in aviation for growth of the industry. Lindbergh single handedly impacted the minds of
millions of people with respect to aviation, starting from it being viewed as dangerous and stupid, to it
being glamorous and helpful, and then growing to it being completely relied upon in today s society.
Aviation would not be where it is at today without the help of this young man. This is due to him
being the first to make a solo flight across the Atlantic, taking a tour of the United States via his plane,
and by also helping to grow airlines in the United States. In order to fully explain how Lindbergh

Whilst performing as a barnstormer, Charles learned how to fly by essentially just teaching himself.
He learned the fundamentals of flying, and was said to have been a great pilot because he just had the
instinct for it, something that was very rare at this point in time. Lindbergh quit being a barnstormer so
that he could go to the school of flying through the United States Navy. Within a year he had
graduated, being the first in his class. This showed that he had great promise in aviation, but instead of
actually joining the Navy, he decided to become a pilot of the United States Airmail. Being an airmail
pilot was actually still very dangerous at this time, and had a high death rate. Lindbergh however did
not stay an airmail pilot for very long, and decided he was going to take up the challenge of flying
over the Atlantic with no stops, something no one had accomplished yet. Raymond Orteig, a hotel
owner, set a prize of $25,000 (known as the Orteig Prize) to the first person (or people) to fly across
the Atlantic, from New York to Paris, without making any stops. Many people had attempted this,
including a team led by a French pilot known as René Fonck, an explorer named Richard E. Byrd, and
a team that included Clarence Chamberlin and Bert Acosta. All of these teams had failed, some of

How Did The Boer War Affect Canada
The Boer War was a significant moment in the history of the British Empire as many of great Britain s
commonwealth allies were called to help the fledging empire. Canada during the war went through
many serious debates on what was the suitable choice for the country. Divisions soon rose up along
lines that would continue to exist for much of the century. Canada learned much from the experiences
it faced during the Boer War and it was through the challenges it faced that the country was able to
correctly adapt to the 20th century.
Canada supported a large minority of people with French ancestry. French Canadians lived
predominantly in the province of Quebec. The French Canadians or Quebecois frequently clashed with

The Values Of The Culture Industry Plays Up On Our...
Every community has its own set of standards that the members adhere to and uphold. These
ideologies are often unspoken ways of thinking, and while they reflect the society s values, they are
often represented in a distorted manner so that the social system stays in order. Interpellation, on the
other hand, is what discreetly holds each person in their societal position, often based on ideologies.
Whether we realize it or not, the culture industry plays up on our societal ideologies, especially in
movies and television programs. Think of a typical children s TV sitcom; most of these programs
depict a white, middle class, suburban family with two heterosexual parents, three children, a pet.
Each element of this average family is ideological in assuming that the audiences expects and believes
in, or are a part of, this familial structure. By endorsing these ways of thinking, the program is relating
to the audience and validating their beliefs. For example, a young girl interpellates when she
recognizes herself as a daughter, and thus, she gives her parents power.
Children s television is not the only ideology industry; all forms of entertainment often reflect multiple
ideologies at any given moment. Tina Fey s satirical comedy, 30 Rock, provides plenty of nods to
ideologies surrounding the workplace, specifically the entertainment business. In the fifth episode of
season one, Jack Tor, Jack Donaghy, the big shot Vice President of East Coast Television and

Comparison Of The Squire And The Canterbury Tales
In the late 14th century that is represented in Geoffrey Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales, the most
perceived element of a true gentleman was conceivably chivalry. This element is demonstrated in two
of the many characters in the story, the Knight and the Squire. The Knight and the Squire are father
and son who are both members of the aristocrat class; both ride honorably on their horses and have the
aura of a true gentleman, but despite their similarities, they are different. Though the Knight and the
Squire share the same profession and are both members of the same aristocratic class, they differ in
the fact that the Knight portrays the ideal society while the Squire displays the reality of society.
Although the Knight and the Squire both possess the same occupation, they exhibit disparate
approaches in relation to devotion. In regard of battles, it was the prime objective in the Knight s
description, whereas in the Squire s, was barely a significant component. All of the Squire s
involvement amidst the military is very shortly revealed saying that he had seen some service with the
calvary/ In Flanders and Artois and Picardy, (Chaucer 87 88) while the Knight s list of battles is the
focus in his description. The Knight traveled along the Mediterranean coast (Chaucer 61) to multiple
regions including Russia, North Africa, Anatolia, etc. and also fought in fifteen mortal battles
(Chaucer 63) and always killed his men (Chaucer 65) showing evidence of his devotion to

Benefits Of A Tariff On Goods And Services That Are Imported
A Tariff in general is a comprehensive tax on goods and services that are imported. The main aim of a
tariff is to create security to the domestic product of a nation from the imported goods which are
cheaper and have a huge production capacity. Furthermore tariffs also aid in balancing the prices in a
country. This paper describes the roles tariffs play in a country and also pros and cons of tariffs.
There exist many different forms tariffs in which each is has its own specific operation. Some of the
most notable tariffs include the revenue tariff, prohibitive tariff and protective tariff.
The Revenue Tariff
This tariff is meant to create and accumulate huge amount of government finances. For example a
country that has little product. For it to keep the domestic income strong the government has to install
tariff on the goods which have been imported hence levying the prices. The government thus creates a
security cover for the product of certain import goods that are limited.
Prohibitive tariff
This tariff is normally used to diminish competition between the foreign and domestic producers.
Furthermore it is used to cease foreign imports present in its track. It works in a way similar to an
embargo placed on a specific given country.
Protective tariff
This type of tariff tends to inflate the prices that imported products have set thus creating a positive
price vacuum for locally based industries. Protective tariff highly taxes foreign imports hence forcing

Essay about Richard Iii + Looking for Richard Comparative...
Good morning/afternoon
Throughout my comparative study of texts and context, I have explored various connections shared
between William Shakespeare s Richard the 3rd and Al Pacino s Looking for Richard . As both of
these items are based on the same character, King Richard the 3rd, they share a lot in common. The
connection that I have chosen to concentrate on though is the idea of power, and how both texts
explore this theme.
William Shakespeare is an extremely famous English poet and playwright and widely regarded as the
greatest writer in the English language. He was most prominent in the years 1585 1592 writing 38
plays. Richard 3rd is considered to be one of his greatest plays and was written in 1591 depicting the

Richard then gloats over his success in a soliloquy stating how he has won her heart even though he is
regarded by her as the devil with dissembling looks and he stabbed Edward her love just 3 months
earlier. This highlights how he thinks of himself as the best as he brags about his misdeeds as though
he is immortal.
Al Pacinos Looking for Richard is a failed movie attempt of Richard 3rd turned documentary
produced, directed and acted in by the man himself.
This same theme of power is evident throughout Al Pacino Looking for Richard as he wants to
establish himself as the definitive American Shakespeare actor and achieve greatness. I say this
because all throughout history American actors have been too afraid to act Shakespeare as it has
traditionally been English done, but Pacino strives to prove this wrong.
All throughout looking for Richard a documentary directed by and starring Al Pacino he is made to
seem on another level to anybody else. This is highlighted by Fredrick Kimball, who is also directing

Essay on Optimism and Personality Trait
Optimism could be considered a condition of the mind that makes one believe that the best things will
always happen to them. A common idiom used to illustrate optimism versus pessimism is a glass with
water at the halfway point, where the optimist is said to see the glass as half full, but the pessimist sees
the glass as half empty. Optimists tend to see adversity as temporary; more specifically they view the
obstacle as limited to the situation and not generalized.
1) How does the personality trait develop in humans? Where does it appear to come from? (20 pts)

Parents also reinforce optimism and perseverance by encouraging their children to deal with any type
of obstacle in a positive way. Life is full of hurdles but it s the way we deal with these difficulties that
shape our expectations of things.
2) What purpose or function does the trait appear to serve? (20 pts)
Optimism can be a powerful tool to motivate people to do things that we might have reservations
about. Humans have the intellectual power to look ahead and anticipate any likely outcomes. In our
everyday lives we take on numerous tasks a throughout our live whether it is studying for finals,
starting a new project at work or starting a new diet. An article by Annie Paul in Psychology Today
gave the example of how even an ordinary effort like going on a diet can benefit from dose of
optimism. A review of dieting studies show that more than two thirds of dieters gain back more weight
than they initially thought. With such a grim outlook on dieting, optimism gives people the much
needed motivation to believe that their goal is achievable (Paul 2011). If you stopped and took a
minute to think about how much work you had to put in or how much of a risk you could be taking,
you might never even make the attempt. Optimism has such a commanding force that it has the ability
to convince you that things will work out just long enough to take the step forward and make an effort
to accomplish that task. For example, a student in medical school will put a tremendous amount

The Characters Of Education In Atticus Finch And Bob Ewell
During the Great Depression in the 1930 s over twelve million people were unemployed causing
people to become poor and homeless. The Great Depression affected those who had education and
worsened the living conditions for those who were less educated. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird,
Harper Lee compares two completely different people, Atticus Finch and Bob Ewell to display how
education affected different social castes in society. In the 1930 s the Great Depression came along as
a tragic era making education forgotten as America faced other issues. At this time, Atticus, a white
man and a father of two kids strives to portray an example of how important education is in a time of
struggle. On the other hand the character Bob Ewell is, a white man, is poor and extremely ignorant to
the value education and believes it has no effect on society. Atticus and Bob are men of different
beliefs and values. [Through the characterization of Atticus Finch and Bob Ewell the readers can
believe compassion is reached through education, which a man with compassion and education for
their community can lead to humanity.] Atticus is a well educated man as he demonstrates outstanding
habits through his actions. After, Scout asks why Atticus is defending Tom Robinson he say, For a
number of reasons, the main one is, if I didn t I couldn t hold up my head in town, I couldn t represent
this county in the legislature, I couldn t even tell you or Jem not to do something again. [...] Scout,
simply by the nature of the work, every lawyer gets at least one case in his lifetime that affects him
personally. This one s mine, I guess (Lee 56). Atticus, a man of great knowledge proves how respected
he is in Maycomb County. He points out that only men with knowledge and education are able to take
on a big responsible such as the one he is given. The purpose of this quote is to signify the importance
of education and how it lead him to such a high position in society. Compared to Bob Ewell, Atticus
contains the sification of how to action in times of importance. This affects the way people view
Atticus because now he s accepted and known as The Lawyer for Tom Robinson. For example, after

My Story Of Hyper-Flexibility
Hyper flexibility. At the time my sister was diagnosed with it, she was ten and I was nine. As the
doctor said the word to my parents, I sat there confused, wondering what it meant. I looked over to my
mother for an explanation; she smiled kindly and said, It just means that your sister is a bit more
flexible and can do some things you may not be able to. At the time I didn t realize how much of an
impact that sentence would have on me. My sister and I are only a year, two months, and sixteen days
apart. Over the years, this made us very close and we developed similar behaviors, often giving the
illusion that we are twins. However, when it came to knowledge and experience, our age difference
created a fissure that could not be seen but clearly separated us, as she was always ahead in her
education, always given more grown up privileges, and always ahead in physical and mental
accomplishments. Even when I attempted the same things she did, my accomplishments were
lackluster when compared to hers. In theory, I understood why it seemed to be this way, she had
simply done it first, but deep down I was furious. I was angry that she got all the attention because of

If members of the folk establishment felt conflicted by Dylan s success, they would soon be enraged
by his break out performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, in which he ushered in the era of
folk rock. Despite lyrical genius, folk music had been unable to touch the primal urges released
through rock and roll, inhibiting the genre from reaching a mass audience. Dylan combined folk with
rock in a way that brought the best traits in each to bear. He filled rock s lyrical vacuum with
Tombstone Blues and Desolation Row, among others. Tombstone Blues infuses an exciting rock and
roll beat with surreal lyrics that maintain Dylan s individualism. Desolation Row continues this trend;
the listener pictures cultural icons in absurdist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dylan explained his 1965 transition in an interview that same year, explaining to reporter Charles
Champlin that songs aren t gonna save the world. He goes on to dispel the notion that he is a teacher
or a leader, even going so far as to reject labels like poet. Frustrated with pop culture s simple minded
political commitment, he makes a shambles of it. Desolation Row demands listeners question the
significance of which side one is on, when we are all sitting aboard the sinking Titanic. No longer
enacting change through his art, Dylan now satirizes any who are naive enough to believe they can
save the world. The satire appears mainly directed at elites who intellectualized their commitment [to
far away folks ] without having true feelings. During the later portion of the 1960 s, Dylan turned his

Characteristics Of Revolutionary In The Revolution Of The...
The American Revolution was, in fact, revolutionary. Revolutionary means to work against. So, in this
case, there were many instances which made the American Revolution revolutionary. For example,
Benjamin Franklin wrote the quote, Join or Die, in 1754. This quote was intended to, urge the Thirteen
colonies to unite behind England in its struggle against the French and Native American forces during
the French and Indian war. This means that he was allies with the British. So, him and the British were
working together to work against the French.
But, unfortunately that alliance did not last very long because in 1775 the Battle of Bunker Hill was
fought between the British and the Americans. While the British ended up being victors of the battle,
the only thing they gained was a confidence boost. Also, in 1775 76 Thomas Paine wrote Common
Sense to advocate independence from Great Britain to people in the Thirteen colonies. While you
might think the French and Indian war was fought between the French and the Indians it was actually
fought between the French and the British while the Indians were divided between the two.
During the American Revolution there were two groups of people. Loyalists and Patriots. Loyalists
were the people who stood by the British during the American Revolution. The Loyalists, wanted to
pursue peaceful forms of protest because they believed that violence would give rise to mob rule or
tyranny. They also believed that independence would mean the

High Demand For Computer Chips
Computer chips are widely used today in computers, phones, tablets, and other electronics. The high
demand for computer chips requires a manufacturing process that is accurate as well as efficient. In
the past, chips have been manufactured out of many different materials including copper oxide and
germanium. Today, computer chips are manufactured using silicon due to its versatility as a
semiconductor and how readily available it is in the environment. This paper includes how silicon
became an important semiconductor, a brief history on the process of integrated chip manufacturing,
an analysis of the shrinking of manufacturing process, and newer methods of three dimensional
lithography. Silicon and germanium are used as semiconductors ... Show more content on

Different combinations of n and p type doping are used to create electronic components such as
transistors, capacitors, and diodes. Silicon became the top semiconductor in the 1960s due to the oxide
layer it forms, its ability to perform at higher temperatures, and its availability in nature. When
exposed to air, silicon forms a silicon dioxide layer on its surface that serves as an excellent insulator
allowing for small interference between different components. Compared to germanium, silicon is
able to perform at higher temperatures which becomes important when there are several different
components on a chip operating and generating heat. Silicon is also readily available in nature, as it is
a main component in sand whereas germanium is difficult to extract in large quantities making it more
expensive. Computer processors and graphics processors have become increasingly advanced over the
past 15 years, and require a process that is able to lay billions of transistors in a short amount of time.
This process starts out with a silicon wafer, which is made from sand that it is melted down and
extruded into a cylinder of perfect silicon lattices. This cylinder is cut into several eighteen inch
diameter disks that are close to one millimeter thick. The silicon wafer is then annealed to remove the
internal stresses of the lattice and then an

Monroeville Real Life
A Real Life Maycomb
Harper Lee wrote To Kill a Mockingbird about a little Alabama town called Maycomb. What is
interesting is how Maycomb compares a lot to the town that Ms. Lee grew up in, Monroeville,
Alabama. The history of Monroeville and the way it was in the 1930s makes a reader wonder if Ms.
Lee took her hometown and made it the famous small town in the novel. By looking back to the
history of Monroeville s founding, the way it was in the 1930s, the way it almost mirrors Maycomb
and the way it is it today, one can see that Ms. Lee s used her experiences to create one of the most
famous towns in literature.
Monroeville, Alabama is located between Montgomery and Mobile. Before it was developed as a
town in 1831, it was called Burnt Corn Springs. During this time, there was major conflicts between
England, Spain, and Native Americans (Monroeville int). This past showed what Monroeville ... Show

According to (Kaplan Norton, 2005) organisation must recognize that effective strategy execution
requires communicating corporate strategy; ensuring that enterprise level plans are translated into the
plans of the various units and departments; executing strategic initiatives to deliver on the grand plan;
and aligning employees competency development plans, and their personal goals and incentives, with
strategic objectives.
Mankins and Steele (2005) developed a seven step methodology to bridge the gap developing business
strategy and implementing and executing business performance.
Keep it simple and make it concrete: All employees of the organisation should be able to understand
what the organisation will and will not do.
Debate assumptions, not forecasts: Over estimating and under stating are dangerous negotiations and
should be avoided. Be realistic at what can be achieved.

Trip to Colorado
My family and I had planned a trip to Denver, Colorado to visit my brother and his girlfriend. It took
months and months to finally have it all planned out, but we finally figured everything out. We left for
the cities on a Wednesday night. We stayed in a sketchy hotel in the cities by the airport and flew out
of Minneapolis around 5:30 a.m. I was so nervous, as it was my very first plane ride. The plane was
quite small. Our plane was delayed due to them having to deice the plane due to all the cold. I
suddenly started to feel sick, all my nerves had gotten to me so I reached for the puke bag and puked
everywhere! I was so embarrassed, my family and people around me were laughing so hard at me
because I had gotten myself so worked up. But once the plane started up I felt much better.
As we arrived in Colorado, we went to go get our rental car and then headed to Pikes Peak as we
waited for Jordan and Monet to get off of work. My family had really struggled to find Pikes Peak, we
plugged it into our google maps and it took us to a campground called Pikes Peak then it took us to a
playground that was called Pikes Peak . We laughed and joked around, since we were getting lost so
easily on our first day there. But finally we found the actual Pikes Peak! We drove all the way to the
top! It was so scary driving to the top, the wind was so strong the higher we got. Mom and I were
freaking out because of how high up we were, it was so scary

The Period Of The Absorbent Mind Essay
Human beings are nature s most incredible creation, and early childhood is the crucial period, where
the foundation for his/her future is going to be established. The period of the Absorbent Mind (Birth to
Six years) along with the Sensitive periods, plays a significant part in the development of movement,
language and social skills of the child.
During the first three years of life, the child s mind is unconscious and purely absorbent. He/She has
the ability to imbibe whatever happens in the environment, and later use it towards the overall
development (physical as well as psychic). The Study of the Sensitive periods (a distinct sensibility of
the child towards acquiring a particular characteristic), helps in understanding the psychic growth of
the child. A child is born in this world; this implies he/she has entered a new environment, ready to
absorb every minute activity that happens around them.
Whatever is formed at that time in the child s mneme has the power to become eternal (The Absorbent
Mind, Dr. Maria Montessori, Page No.120)
Horme The Unconscious inner drive of the child, awakens the child s enthusiasm towards his/her
environment in the first three years of birth. The Silent observer acquires every movement from the
environment and stores it in the Mneme the unconscious memory. Whatever is saved in the Mneme,
later becomes a part of the child s personality. As adults, we are aware of the physical developments
that happen in a child. At the same time, the

They saved local farms and brought jobs to this region. They also shouldered the risk of hog prices,
thereby protecting the farmers. Smithfield was also able to satisfy customer demands of better
products at lower prices. The local farming community showed their tacit support by their eagerness
to do business with Smithfield as there was a two year long waiting list in 1998 for farmers wishing to
enter into contract farming! o The company should be proud of its business model. A business model
refers to how and why the business will generate revenues, cover costs, and produce profits and a
positive ROE. Annual sales in 2006 of $11 billion from $1.5 billion in 1995 and an average compound
growth rate of 24% during the decade speak volumes. However attention is required in addressing the
following: Concerns from the industry observers on contract farming more specifically their debt
laden nature Allegations of unfair labour practices low pay/ low quality, in addition the recruitment of
migrant labour from Central or South America that may be open to exploitation. Allegations of
detrimental environmental practices impact of concentrated cluster of hog farms on the environment.

  • 2. Lewis s Mere Christianity With Its Complex Themes And... After reflecting on C.S. Lewis s Mere Christianity with its complex themes and wording, I thought that reading N.T. Wright s Simply Jesus would be an understandable breath of fresh air. However this book raised more questions in my mind and beliefs than Mere Christianity ever did. Wright asks a lot of poignant questions in the book in regards to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and in turn triggers even more questions in his readers. He captures the nature of a 21st century Christian perfectly. Like it or not we are a doubting group who question everything in our society whether that be politics, relationships, or religion. While reading Part One of Simply Jesus I had a nagging thought growing in the back of my mind. With every page I read it became stronger and more prominent until it was a clearly formed question; why did God not prepare the world for the coming of Christ better? Now of course I know that there were prophesies and foreshadowing of Christ but my question is not why did God not say there would be a savior, because He did, but rather why did He not give the people some more information. Ever since I was a child I have heard over and over again that the people of Israel did not believe that Jesus was the Messiah was because they were expecting something else. Even Wright says on page one of Simply Jesus, He was not the King they expected . I just cannot help but wonder why God never told the people what to expect. How hard would it have been to tell the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Losing a Language Explication Essay W.S. Merwin immediately sets a tone for Losing a Language in the title, hinting at the lament like characteristic of the poem. In fact, the title is not supposed to be a metaphor or even contain a hidden meaning that the reader must deduce by reading on. The poem is exactly what the title suggests: language and words, and thus communication, has been lost. Merwin creates a nostalgic and sad tone to emphasize the loss and quickly establishes the direction of the poem using simple diction. He carries this simple language, along with the mournful tone, into the rest of the work and does not stray from the subject. This allows the central idea, the loss of language, to not only persist throughout the piece but to become the dominant thought ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A second conflict introduced in the first couplet is the gap between the old and the young due to the loss or change of language. The speaker states that the old still remember and contrasts this with the young, who have fewer words. In the fifth couplet, we see a similar situation with parents and children. The speaker gives us two ends of a spectrum to demonstrate the distance that the change in language has created. We see a physical representation of this with the line, farther and farther away. The gap is also represented in the sixth and ninth couplets, particularly in the lines we are wrong and dark / in the eyes of the new owners. By referring to one side as we and the other as them, new owners, or somebody, we can see two sides and that what was once familiar to the speaker is now replaced by something foreign (line 21) and an us vs. them gap is formed. Because the speaker is direct and clear, we are able to recognize the nostalgic tone simply because of what the speaker is explicitly telling us. However, the structure of the poem also contributes to the tone. There are no punctuations throughout the entire poem, yet we still read it slow enough to create a dramatic and sad mood. The poem is divided into fourteen couplets, each with a substantial gap between them. At the end of a couplet, we are forced to slow down and fully pause before moving on to a new section. In addition, most of the lines are complete clauses ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Why bothering in telling the truth to others when everything is justified by a certain response to some kind of stimuli? Many philosophers and psychologists around the world have been studying the human behavior for several years. Most of them have agreed on the way people react to things in life such as love, hate, truth, and lies. As a matter of fact, various theories have been developed when it comes to justify human behavior. These theories happen to explain the relationship between the body and mind of human beings from different perspectives. Just to mention one, we have Behaviorism. Behaviorism, ethics, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So, what kind of human behavior that is? Ethics, on the other hand, also defined as moral philosophy, encloses the meaning of what is wrong and right in life. Questions arise from this term such as what s the best way for me to go through this situation? How can I end up being the least damaged? What s the best way for me to live in this world without being hurt? If I lie, only this time, would it be wrong or right? Everything goes around one self. Then, we have the term psychological egoism where every person is being motivated by self interest and well being, without caring about others. Therefore, lying to others in order to achieve a certain benefit becomes a self ethical psychological egoism, in other words, if I m going to be fine and won t get hurt after lying, then it s right for me to do it no matter what the consequences will be. Philosophers like Kant condemned any kind of lying. They use to say that lying, even if it was the only way possible to save oneself from some situation, was never ethically permissible. How right is it to be admitted in a hospital almost dying from some kind of unknown condition and lie about anything in your daily life that can be relevant to your doctor in order to diagnose what you have going on inside you? As previously shown [19], [23], there is a voluntary response in incomplete SCI due to epidural stimulation and stepping training sessions, thus we expect to see a voluntary response in all groups. Due to the motor tasks proposed, we anticipate that the voluntary response is augmented in both intervention groups compared to the control group, and it is also increased within each group over time. Potential Problems and Alternative Strategies: Due to the limitations encountered after a spinal cord injury and the variability in responses due to injury level, the training protocols proposed might be challenging. Full body weight standing and increased load bearing during walking on an inclined treadmill would be one of the challenges encountered due to the rapid bone density decrease and muscle atrophy in the rst two years after a spinal cord lesion [49]. To overcome this, we target individuals at the beginning of the chronic stage of a SCI (6 months) when this degradation is not advanced. This intervention might 4 actually contribute to maintaining bone and muscle health, since the rapid bone degradation is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Taking a Look at Capital Punishment William Furman murdered William Micke on August 11, 1967 in Savannah, Georgia. Furman was unemployed, and only had a sixth grade education. William Furman became depressed, and started to commit theft for food and money. Furman was caught stealing several times, but was only given a light sentence. At 2 a.m. on August 11, William Furman broke into the house of William Micke, while Micke and his five children were sleeping. William Micke heard a noise and went downstairs to see where the noise was coming from. He spotted Furman, and Furman ran for the back door. William Furman tripped over an exposed wire and the gun in Furman s hand went off. The bullet hit William Ficke, killing him instantly. The Furman v. Georgia case started in the district court and then moved up to the appellate court. Furman was sentenced to death by the appellate court after a one day trial. He made the argument that his eighth and fourteenth amendment rights were being violated. The case moved up to the Supreme Court of the United States. In the trial, Furman had four main arguments: most western nations had abolished capital punishment because it was an unsuccessful way to deter crime; juries only handed out about 100 death penalties each year, and only about 50 prisoners were sentenced to death so capital punishment was not being issued objectively; national prison records stated that executions almost always involved black prisoners; and the only reason why capital punishment had ... • 9. Explore Shakespeare s Presentation of the Three Great... During the scenes depicting the Battle of Actium, Shakespeare s presentation of Octavius Caesar, Mark Antony and Cleopatra cause the balance of audience sympathy to change between the three great leaders. Audience sympathy never lies by any real amount with Caesar, and in Acts III and IV, the audience feels increasingly alienated from him. This is largely due to his calculated, ruthless style of leadership, which becomes more evident during the battle. Caesar judges wisely, and is successful because of this, and by Act III, Scene 7 he has already defeated Toryne – previously one of Antony s territories. In Act III, Scene 12, Shakespeare presents Caesar as a callous and cruel leader, as he hears the requests of Antony for peace and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, though unwisely, Antony suggests a feast for their comfort , and this summarises his leadership, as he is no longer presented by Shakespeare as a great and powerful leader, but as a kind and generous man. Caesar appears to be a heartless leader, detached from the people, whereas Antony shows his emotions and, thus, appears more human, which causes the audience to sympathise with him. In Act IV, Scenes 5 and 8, Shakespeare presents Antony as a great leader once again, as he defeats Caesar s land army, winning an unexpected victory and causing the audience to venerate him once more, instead of feeling pity for his predicament. However, this triumph is short lived, and in Act IV, Scene 12, Antony s navy surrenders to Caesar without a fight, deserting Antony, leaving him feeling betrayed, and, once again, the audience sympathy shifts even further towards Antony. Cleopatra develops as a character during this sequence, becoming more sensible and less melodramatic in response to trivial problems. In Act III, Scene 7, Enobarbus tells Cleopatra not to be involved in the battle itself, saying that: If we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Gun Laws And Banning The United States Amar Redzepagic 10/3/15 The gun laws and bans in the United States are not helping to make things better or decrease our crime rate or solve anything instead we need better background checks to make sure we are not giving guns to the wrong people. A study published in the Harvard journal of law and public policy discovered that the nations with more guns tend to have a lower crime rate (Snyder, Michael. N.p., 12 Aug. 2013. Web. 26 Mar. 2015.). This proves that people tend not to commit a crime if they know that people around them are armed and ready to fire also they know that if they go to a country with a lower percentage of gun ownership they are not taking as much risk because there aren t that many guns in the area. Are all these bans and laws really necessary? The nine European nations with the lowest rate of gun ownership have a murder rate that is three times higher than the nine European nations with the highest rate of gun ownership (Snyder, Michael. In the start of the 12th century the gothic style was introduced which greatly influenced the styles in the buildings like the cathedral of Toledo, Burgos and Leon. The renaissance trend in Europe greatly influenced the Spanish architecture. Spanish architectures were not just about buildings they were also a means of communication. Each architecture that was created reflected the community s values, pursuits and culture. Each Spanish building erected showed the dominance of a cultural group in the community and the geographical area it was erected in showed the extent of their power and dominance. Such buildings often bore an identifying sign for example the sign of a church was different from that of a mosque. The church s sign was significantly that of a cross while that of a mosque bore that of a crescent moon and a star and it signified the significance or dominance of a religious group or cultural group in that area. The middle ages were an exciting period in the history of Spanish architecture and it was at that time there was the entrance of the moors which means Muslim in Spanish. This conditional statement has as its antecedent a series of eight hypotheticals which are aimed at creating a hypothetical multitude of immensely knowledgeable and wise creatures. The antecedent contains the following hypotheticals: all creatures being as intelligent and knowledgeable as the most intelligent and knowledgeable human, God giving each creature the maximum knowledge and wisdom that their souls can handle, God then giving each creature the combined knowledge of all creatures, God revealing to each creature the consequences of things, God teaching each creature the mysteries of the transcendent world, God teaching each creature about divine favor, God making each creature aware of final punishments, God making each creature aware of good and evil and of benefit and harm. All of these components of the antecedent serve to set up a scenario in which there exists a multitude of extremely wise and knowledgeable creatures. These components are presented in lines one through sixteen of the passage quoted by Ormsby on his pages 38 41 of Theodicy in Islamic Thought. If the conditions of the antecedent were met, says Al Ghazali, then another conditional claim would be the case. This second conditional claim, which is the consequent of the first conditional claim and is contained in lines sixteen through nineteen, has as its antecedent God asking all of the now hyper wise and hyper knowledgeable creatures to work together in creating the best possible arrangement of this world and of the transcendent world. If God asked this of the creatures in the hypothetical, Al Ghazali says in lines nineteen through twenty four that the creatures would produce an arrangement that is exactly identical to the way in which God has arranged His creation as it truly is. Al Ghazali, in lines twenty four through twenty seven goes so far as to say that the product would not have subtracted or added as little as a gnat s wing and that it would not have altered the position of a single particle of dust. Tenure in America Essay Although there are many varying opinions on what revisions should be made to the tenure system in America, I believe that even though there are many complaints, Tenure needs to be maintained in order to promote academic freedom and educational security. Tenure is defined by Mathew Finkin as At the expiration of a period of probation, commonly not to exceed six years of full time service, a faculty member is either to be accorded tenure or to be given a terminal appointment for the ensuing academic year. Thereafter, the professor can be discharged only for just cause or other permissible circumstances and only after a hearing before a body of his or her academic peers (Finkin 3). What would happen to teachers without tenure? They could and would be fired for virtually any reason. It s not hard to imagine teachers being dismissed because they failed the daughter of an influential businessman or because the school board president s nephew needed a job. In these fiscally troubled times, what would stop a school board from replacing a veteran teacher at the top of the pay scale with a first year teacher simply to save money? Tenure is the first line of defense against attacks on academic freedom. Teachers can engage their students in a free exchange of ideas only if they are protected from arbitrary dismissal for doing so. When mezzanine debt is used in conjunction with senior debt it reduces the amount of equity required in the business. Although it makes up a portion of a company s total available capital, mezzanine financing is critical to growing companies and in succession planning in recent years. The gap in funding between senior debt and equity is common for the following reasons: 1) accounts receivable, inventories and fixed assets are being discounted at greater rates than in the past for fear that their values will not be realized in the future; 2) many balance sheets now contain significant intangible assets, and, 3) as a result of defaults and regulatory pressure, banks have placed ceilings on the amount of total debt a company can obtain. While additional liquidity can be obtained from equity investors, equity is the most expensive source of capital. Further, equity capital, by its nature, dilutes existing shareholders. Another interesting fact is that at one point Canada did not use metric. The Metric system Is a system of measurement that is as said earlier is used in most countries. The Us is one of the few that doesn t use metric. The reason this is because most countries deemed it suitable, but the U.S still uses Imperial measurement. In short the United States should convert to the metric system because conversion from standard to metric is difficult, the metric system is more precise, and people already use metric in the US anyway. The first reason is conversion from standard to metric is difficult. This is because a miscalculation in converting between metric and imperial. NASA lost a Mars orbiter. This all happened because the other team used imperial. A plane from air Canada crashed because of converting error. This happened because the plane was the company s first metric measurements and the gage was not working. They used ripsticks to see how much fuel the plane took but conversion to volume to weight went wrong and they crashed. • 19. Characteristics Of A Business Entity =Characteristics of Business Entities= Before we can review each type of business entity, we need to cover a few characteristics that may differentiate each business structure: Liability : Liability refers to how much financial responsibility will be held by a business or individual in the event of business losses. In business terms, this often means who will be held financially responsible in the event that debts cannot be repaid or the business suffers losses from an action by a court of law. This issue brings about two distinct concepts called unlimited liability or limited liability. Unlimited liability means that the owners of the business will be held financially liable for loses incurred by the business. What this ultimately means is that creditors or a court of law can seize an individual s personal assets (their personal home, personal car, personal bank accounts etc.) in order to pay debts that were incurred by the business. Limited liability, on the other hand, means that often times the owners or investors will only be held liable up to the extent of their investment. However, courts can still seize personal assets of investors if fraud has occurred that lead to the failure of the business. Double Taxation : For certain business structures, primarily corporations, the profits of the entity will be taxed a minimum of two times. • 21. The Social Cognitive Theory Of Ptsd CPT is based on the social cognitive theory of PTSD. This theory focuses on how the traumatic event is understood and how it is being coped with by the client who is struggling to regain control over his or her life. CPT also refers to the emotional processing theory of PTSD which is an extension of information processing theory by Foa, Steketee, and Rothbaum (Mullen, Holliday, Morris, Raja, and Surís 2014). This theory states PTSD emerges from the development of fear in one s memory that creates avoidance behavior and provokes one to escape these memories. Mental fear builds stimuli, responses, and meaning elements (Mullen, Holliday, Morris, Raja, and Surís 2014). Therefore anything that is associated with the trauma may provoke fear that leads to the concept of escaping and avoidance behavior. In individuals with PTSD, the fear is known to be easily accessible. When the fear is activated by the reminders of one s trauma, one builds intrusive symptoms due to the information trying to process and enter one s consciousness. In order for an individual to avoid these feelings and thoughts, one tries to avoid it which leads to the avoidance symptoms of PTSD which include yet are not limited to depression, alienation (Mullen, Holliday, Morris, Raja, and Surís 2014). Emotional Processing Theory states the repetitive exposure of trauma in a safe environment such as a therapeutic setting, helps reduce PTSD symptoms by calming and addressing one s fear (Mullen, Holliday, Morris, ... • 28. How Did The Boer War Affect Canada The Boer War was a significant moment in the history of the British Empire as many of great Britain s commonwealth allies were called to help the fledging empire. Canada during the war went through many serious debates on what was the suitable choice for the country. Divisions soon rose up along lines that would continue to exist for much of the century. Canada learned much from the experiences it faced during the Boer War and it was through the challenges it faced that the country was able to correctly adapt to the 20th century. Canada supported a large minority of people with French ancestry. French Canadians lived predominantly in the province of Quebec. • 29. The Values Of The Culture Industry Plays Up On Our... Every community has its own set of standards that the members adhere to and uphold. These ideologies are often unspoken ways of thinking, and while they reflect the society s values, they are often represented in a distorted manner so that the social system stays in order. Interpellation, on the other hand, is what discreetly holds each person in their societal position, often based on ideologies. Whether we realize it or not, the culture industry plays up on our societal ideologies, especially in movies and television programs. Think of a typical children s TV sitcom; most of these programs depict a white, middle class, suburban family with two heterosexual parents, three children, a pet. Each element of this average family is ideological in assuming that the audiences expects and believes in, or are a part of, this familial structure. By endorsing these ways of thinking, the program is relating to the audience and validating their beliefs. For example, a young girl interpellates when she recognizes herself as a daughter, and thus, she gives her parents power. Children s television is not the only ideology industry; all forms of entertainment often reflect multiple ideologies at any given moment. Tina Fey s satirical comedy, 30 Rock, provides plenty of nods to ideologies surrounding the workplace, specifically the entertainment business. • 31. Comparison Of The Squire And The Canterbury Tales In the late 14th century that is represented in Geoffrey Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales, the most perceived element of a true gentleman was conceivably chivalry. This element is demonstrated in two of the many characters in the story, the Knight and the Squire. The Knight and the Squire are father and son who are both members of the aristocrat class; both ride honorably on their horses and have the aura of a true gentleman, but despite their similarities, they are different. Though the Knight and the Squire share the same profession and are both members of the same aristocratic class, they differ in the fact that the Knight portrays the ideal society while the Squire displays the reality of society. Although the Knight and the Squire both possess the same occupation, they exhibit disparate approaches in relation to devotion. In regard of battles, it was the prime objective in the Knight s description, whereas in the Squire s, was barely a significant component. All of the Squire s involvement amidst the military is very shortly revealed saying that he had seen some service with the calvary/ In Flanders and Artois and Picardy, (Chaucer 87 88) while the Knight s list of battles is the focus in his description. • 34. Benefits Of A Tariff On Goods And Services That Are Imported A Tariff in general is a comprehensive tax on goods and services that are imported. The main aim of a tariff is to create security to the domestic product of a nation from the imported goods which are cheaper and have a huge production capacity. Furthermore tariffs also aid in balancing the prices in a country. This paper describes the roles tariffs play in a country and also pros and cons of tariffs. There exist many different forms tariffs in which each is has its own specific operation. Some of the most notable tariffs include the revenue tariff, prohibitive tariff and protective tariff. The Revenue Tariff This tariff is meant to create and accumulate huge amount of government finances. For example a country that has little product. For it to keep the domestic income strong the government has to install tariff on the goods which have been imported hence levying the prices. The government thus creates a security cover for the product of certain import goods that are limited. Prohibitive tariff This tariff is normally used to diminish competition between the foreign and domestic producers. Furthermore it is used to cease foreign imports present in its track. It works in a way similar to an embargo placed on a specific given country. Protective tariff This type of tariff tends to inflate the prices that imported products have set thus creating a positive price vacuum for locally based industries. Good morning/afternoon Throughout my comparative study of texts and context, I have explored various connections shared between William Shakespeare s Richard the 3rd and Al Pacino s Looking for Richard . As both of these items are based on the same character, King Richard the 3rd, they share a lot in common. The connection that I have chosen to concentrate on though is the idea of power, and how both texts explore this theme. William Shakespeare is an extremely famous English poet and playwright and widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language. He was most prominent in the years 1585 1592 writing 38 plays. Richard 3rd is considered to be one of his greatest plays and was written in 1591 depicting the ... Al Pacinos Looking for Richard is a failed movie attempt of Richard 3rd turned documentary produced, directed and acted in by the man himself. This same theme of power is evident throughout Al Pacino Looking for Richard as he wants to establish himself as the definitive American Shakespeare actor and achieve greatness. I say this because all throughout history American actors have been too afraid to act Shakespeare as it has traditionally been English done, but Pacino strives to prove this wrong. A common idiom used to illustrate optimism versus pessimism is a glass with water at the halfway point, where the optimist is said to see the glass as half full, but the pessimist sees the glass as half empty. Optimists tend to see adversity as temporary; more specifically they view the obstacle as limited to the situation and not generalized. 1) How does the personality trait develop in humans? (20 pts) Optimism can be a powerful tool to motivate people to do things that we might have reservations about. Humans have the intellectual power to look ahead and anticipate any likely outcomes. In our everyday lives we take on numerous tasks a throughout our live whether it is studying for finals, starting a new project at work or starting a new diet. An article by Annie Paul in Psychology Today gave the example of how even an ordinary effort like going on a diet can benefit from dose of optimism. A review of dieting studies show that more than two thirds of dieters gain back more weight than they initially thought. With such a grim outlook on dieting, optimism gives people the much needed motivation to believe that their goal is achievable (Paul 2011). If you stopped and took a minute to think about how much work you had to put in or how much of a risk you could be taking, you might never even make the attempt. Optimism has such a commanding force that it has the ability to convince you that things will work out just long enough to take the step forward and make an effort to accomplish that task. The Great Depression affected those who had education and worsened the living conditions for those who were less educated. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee compares two completely different people, Atticus Finch and Bob Ewell to display how education affected different social castes in society. In the 1930 s the Great Depression came along as a tragic era making education forgotten as America faced other issues. At this time, Atticus, a white man and a father of two kids strives to portray an example of how important education is in a time of struggle. On the other hand the character Bob Ewell is, a white man, is poor and extremely ignorant to the value education and believes it has no effect on society. Atticus and Bob are men of different beliefs and values. [Through the characterization of Atticus Finch and Bob Ewell the readers can believe compassion is reached through education, which a man with compassion and education for their community can lead to humanity.] Atticus is a well educated man as he demonstrates outstanding habits through his actions. After, Scout asks why Atticus is defending Tom Robinson he say, For a number of reasons, the main one is, if I didn t I couldn t hold up my head in town, I couldn t represent this county in the legislature, I couldn t even tell you or Jem not to do something again. So, in this case, there were many instances which made the American Revolution revolutionary. For example, Benjamin Franklin wrote the quote, Join or Die, in 1754. This quote was intended to, urge the Thirteen colonies to unite behind England in its struggle against the French and Native American forces during the French and Indian war. This means that he was allies with the British. So, him and the British were working together to work against the French. But, unfortunately that alliance did not last very long because in 1775 the Battle of Bunker Hill was fought between the British and the Americans. While the British ended up being victors of the battle, the only thing they gained was a confidence boost. Also, in 1775 76 Thomas Paine wrote Common Sense to advocate independence from Great Britain to people in the Thirteen colonies. While you might think the French and Indian war was fought between the French and the Indians it was actually fought between the French and the British while the Indians were divided between the two. During the American Revolution there were two groups of people. Loyalists and Patriots. Loyalists were the people who stood by the British during the American Revolution. Compared to germanium, silicon is able to perform at higher temperatures which becomes important when there are several different components on a chip operating and generating heat. Silicon is also readily available in nature, as it is a main component in sand whereas germanium is difficult to extract in large quantities making it more expensive.
