Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a common cause of upper and lower respiratory infections in children and adults. It was first identified in 2001. hMPV is associated with illnesses like bronchiolitis, croup, pneumonia and asthma exacerbations. Symptoms are usually mild but can be severe in young children, elderly or immunocompromised individuals. Diagnosis relies on molecular detection methods. There is no vaccine currently available but several candidates are in development.
