Optimism And Pessimism In The Great Gatsby
I believe that the three texts that I have studied contained moments of optimism and pessimism which
in turn have shaped my opinion of the general vision and viewpoint. This alludes to the feelings and
emotions portrayed through the omniscient camera in The King s Speech , the morally inclined
narrator Nick Caraway in The Great Gatsby and the protagonist in the novel Foster . I was very
intrigued to find out more about these societies and the vision the author/director hoped to convey.
The Great Gatsby opens in the boom years in the summer of 1922, commonly known as the Jazz Age .
The opening is conveyed as a mix of optimism and pessimism. At first we are introduced to Nick
Caraway,
A young man in the bond business who is ebullient ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In T.K.S, Bertie faced a barbaric upbringing which he solemnly shared with Logue. This is evident
when he revealed how cruel his nanny was, tunelessly singing She pinch me so I d cry, and be sent
away at once, then she wouldn t feed me, far far away. (speaks) Took three years for my parents to
notice. As you can imagine, it caused some stomach problems. This left me feeling much more
sympathetic towards Bertie and further implemented my pessimistic opinion of the portrayal of
children in the past. This is also seen in T.G.G as Pammy, Daisy s daughter is only seen once during
the entire 1920 s novel and we realise that she, like Bertie, had nannies who took care off her rather
than her parents. A sense of negativity is also conveyed towards children here as Gatsby ,when first
introduced to Pammy, was described as looking at the child with surprise. I don t think he had ever
believed in its existence. she is described as an it and Gatsby then realises that he can t repeat the past
with Daisy and that his obsessive longing for her was a waste of time. I believe that this pessimistic
feeling was a factor in his volatility towards Tom in the Plaza. Similarly in Foster , Mildred like a
predator, pounced on the innocent protagonist and questioned her about the Kinsella s personal affairs
such as where does the old dog sleep, Is she allowed to spend.... . Mildred then inconsiderately
informed the little girl of the Kinsella s boy s passing, stating sure didn t he follow that auld hound of
theirs into the slurry tank and drown...... The soft hearted fool. in a callous tone. Personally I feel that
each of the narrators set out to portray children s lives in a negative

Compare And Contrast Crime And Punishment In Ancient Egypt
This paper is to compare and contrast crime and punishment in the ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt
mainly from the following three perspectives: religion, the purpose of punishment and women. In
terms of religion, we can tell from the Laws of Hammurabi and the Egyptian papyri that the views of
religion were both considered to be supreme in the ancient states. But there are some differences
between the views of the religion, especially in the objective to which the people of two states
believed in respectively. In the Laws of Hammurabi, there are some examples that prove the status of
the nature, like the river, and, in some cases, the river was the symbol of justice which could prove
whether the accused were guilty or not. People believed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

women had the equal right of succession and their lives and properties were protected by the laws
which meant little discrimination between men and women. However, in the ancient Egypt, it was
totally another world for women. The counterparts had no rights of inheritance and they were in a
lower status compared with men, which can be proven in the Accused (pp

Role Of Eglin Air Force Base During World War II
Looking back to World War II, nobody ever thinks about who contributed to the war and how he or
she contributed whether it be money, work, or even his or her own life. Few people in Florida and
even in our local area understand the important role Eglin Air Force Base played during World War II.
The primary mission of the Base during World War II was to perform operational suitability testing for
the Army Air Corps.
Eglin Air Force Base was originally started as Valparaiso Airport in 1933. There was a purchase of an
arrow head shaped parcel of 137 acres. The area was cleared for use as an airdrome. On 1 March
1935, application was made for an FERA grant to pave the runways and to build an office, a barracks

Accelerated aircraft and armament test began in September 1941, three months before Pearl Harbor. In
May 1941, the Army Air Corps designated Eglin as the Air Corps Proving Ground, removing it from
the jurisdiction of the Southeast Air Corps Training Command and placing the base immediately under
the control of the Chief of Air Corps. The primary purpose of the Proving Ground was to provide a
station for tactical test of aircraft armament and accessory equipment and of aviation tactics and
techniques.
Due to increasing size, Eglin Field was renamed Eglin Field Military Reservation in recognition of its
importance to the Air Corps. Appropriations of $202,536 were announced by Congressman Bob Sikes
of Crestview in mid April 1941 for construction and installation of water, sewage, electrical facilities,
sidewalks, roads, fences, parking areas, landscaping and for the construction of a sewage disposal
plant. Submitted to the WPA headquarters in Washington, DC in late March, the request received
presidential approval in April. Work continued apace on some projects on a 24 hour a day basis. In
order to provide the air arm a greater autonomy in which to expand more efficiently, the Army Air
Corps became the U. S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) in June 1941. Following the 7 Dec. 1941 attack on
Pearl Harbor and the United States entry into World War II, Eglin became a

Essay about Conflict Theory in Vietnam
The history of Vietnam is one of great struggle and conflict. For centuries the vietnamese people have
had no choice but to change their society by force in order to gain their own freedom and
independence. Pivitol events in Vietnamese history such as the Battle of Bach Dang in 939 and the
Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954 are examples of how the conflict theory brought change to
Vietnamese society and culture.
For centuries Vietnam had been under Chinese rule. The Vietnamese people were an oppressed society
and were exploited by the Chinese. Forced labour was brought upon the Vietnamese people, and there
were many tyrannical Chinese governers along with constant demands of tribute for the Chinese
rulers. There had been many revolts by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Vietnam was a soveriegn nation until 18th century.
This dramatic change which occurred in less than 25 years is all due to the conflict theory. Without the
Battle of Bach Dang it is possible that Vietnam could still be under Chinese rule and the people would
continue to be exploited.
The French colonized Vietnam in two phases. The first occuring between 1859 1862 by occupying
Saigon and surrounding areas in Mekong. In 1883 they annexed the Hanoi and Tonkin regions.
In the early years of French rule, French administrators planned to change Vietnam socially, politically
and economically. No respect was given to the Vietnamese people or their culture. Court officials (
called manderines ) were forced to report to colonial officials instead of the king, diminishing much of
the kings power and role in society. High costs of colonial administrators caused the French to put
high taxes on salt, opium, alcohol and land. Forced labour was also re introduced. French rule had left
the Vietnamese people and their culture impoverished and very much opressed. By 1940 half of
Vietnamese s population was landless. This is was one of the many crippling effects of French
colonial rule in Vietnam.
Although there had been many uprisings, protests and guerrilla groups formed to attempt to over
throw the French, none were successful, and all attempts were crushed by the French military.
In the early 20th Century many more national groups formed.

The Relation Between Genetics And Physiology And Medicine
Thomas H. Morgan: The relation of genetics to physiology and medicine.
Genetics is the study of how hereditary characteristics or genes are inherited. The studies of genetics
have first been recognized by Gregor Mendel. Gregor Mendel studied how traits were passed down
from parent to offspring using pea plants. It was later discovered that Mendel s law of inheritance not
only worked for pea plants but also on, animals and humans. Mendel s experiments gave rise to the
importance of chromosomes in genetic experiments, crossing over, and linkage. Thomas H. Morgan
experimented on Drosophila melanogaster, fruit flies to give further analysis of Mendel s two laws of
inheritance. Morgan s work have been recognized for discovery of sex linked genes and the
importance of understanding genes for medical practice, in which he discusses in his Nobel Prize
lecture; The relation of genetics to physiology and medicine.
To first understand sex linked inheritance we must understand Gregor Mendel s two laws of
inheritance. Mendel s first law of inheritance or Law of Segregation, describes how each allele in a
pair separates and forms into different gamete or sex cells, during the uniting of these sex cells (the
sperm and the egg). The second law of inheritance or Law of independent assortment states that, a pair
of alleles segregate or separate independently from the other allele in the union of the sex cells. An
addition was added to Mendel s two inheritance laws. These

To Kill A Mockingbird Hatred Quotes
Hatred
Racism is man s gravest threat to man the maximum of hatred for a minimum of reason, said Abraham
Joshua Heschel, scholar and philosopher. This quote from Abraham means that racism and hatred aren
t doing anything but hurting us in the end by causing wars, arguments, and hurt feelings. Hatred can
be seen in everyday life and in every single person on Earth, but can t be stopped because you can t
change people s feelings. Hatred is also shown in To Kill a Mockingbird, The Absolutely True Diary
of a Part Time Indian, The Merchant of Venice, and in the Holocaust.
Hatred was shown multiple times in the Merchant of Venice. The first example of hatred was when
Antonio spit on Shylock shown by the quote, You call me ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Atticus said this after Bob spit in Atticus s face because he didn t like Atticus defending Tom and by
trying to prove Bob s daughter guilty. Bob also said that he would get him if it took the rest of his life
after he spit. Bob obviously showed hatred by what he did in that part. The last example from To Kill
a Mockingbird is when Mr.Radley shot at the kids when they trespassed onto his property. He had a
reason for shooting it but he obviously showed hatred to anyone that stepped foot on his property.
The first example of hatred shown in The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian is when Rowdy
cuts off the Andruss Brothers braids and eyebrows after they beat up Junior. This is shown by the
quote, I m going to kill those bastards, said Rowdy (Alexie, 21). Rowdy definitely showed hatred
because cutting off someone s braids on a reservation like that is a big deal when they take such pride
in their braids. Hey, Chief, Roger said (Alexie, 64). This quote comes from the part where Roger
makes a racist joke and Junior feels he has to fight him. Junior shows hatred towards Roger by saying
that the joke was the most racist thing that he has ever heard and by punching him in the face. Another
example of hatred from the book is when Junior tells Rowdy he is leaving and Rowdy gets mad at him
and refuses to talk to him. When you get that mad at your best friend you are definitely showing
hatred. The first example of hatred in the

An Analysis Of William Faulkner And Ernest Hemingway
William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway were both wonderfully gifted and talented writers in their
time. In As I Lay Dying and A Farewell to Arms, one can see the similarities and differences between
Faulkner and Hemingway through their ability to draw from personal experiences to inspire their
work, their narrative styles, and their use of language. William Faulkner was born in New Albany,
Mississippi and trained as a pilot in the first Royal Canadian Air Force during World War 1. After the
war, Faulkner began writing again. A friend told Faulkner to write about his native Mississippi.
Inspired by the concept, Faulkner began writing about the places and people of his childhood,
developing many colorful characters based on the real people he grew up with or heard about. Many
of Faulkner s most successful pieces, including As I Lay Dying, took place in Yoknapatawpha County
a place nearly identical to where he was raised. (Biography.com). Ernest Hemingway s background,
while different from Faulkner s, also inspired his writing. He was working for a newspaper in Kansas
City, when a friend suggested Hemingway volunteer for the American Field Service as an ambulance
driver. In Europe, Hemingway had many of the experiences he used to pull from in writing A Farewell
to Arms, including being wounded by a projectile exploding in the trenches and falling in love with a
nurse who would become the model for Catherine Barkley (Roberts). Their narrating styles are vastly
different.

Effectiveness of the Australian s Criminal Trial Process...
Evaluate the effectiveness of the criminal trial process in achieving justice
Justice is the concept of moral rightness that is based on equality, access and fairness. This means that
the law is applied equally, understood by all people and does not have a particularly harsh effect on an
individual. In Australia, the adversary system is used as a means to achieve justice by proving the
accused, beyond reasonable doubt, committed the crime. The criminal trial process has many features
which aim to fulfill the requirements of achieving justice. These elements, though considers equality,
fairness and access, are flawed in practice. Flaws such as the handling of evidence, jurors not

Contamination can occur when transferring DNA or the collection of DNA evidence. In the case
involving Mr. Farah, he was wrongful charged of rape although he had appealed in the High Court
with the basis of the scientists not having said he was undisputedly the perpetrator. The scientists said
that it was a very small chance that it was not Mr. Farah which he argued was still a reasonable doubt.
The judges dismissed the case within twenty minutes but it was later found that the evidence was
contaminated. Other examples include R v. Rendell (1999) and R v. Carroll (2002.)Though technology
is advancing, the process of collecting, processing and analyzing DNA has faults. There needs to be
more training, procedures and checks put in place for the system to be effective. Faults in evidence
presents to be ineffective justice as although the jury weighed up the evidence, there was inadequate
access to allow him to refute the claims and lead to wrongful convictions.
Miscarriage of justice is not just framed around contaminated evidence but also by the fact that juries
misinterpret information and instructions which result in an incorrect verdict. Voting for the verdict
previously had to be unanimous until 2006, when the Juries (Amendment) Act 2006 (NSW). Although
majority verdict allows for quicker and easier verdicts, less pressure to conform and eliminates a
rogue juror, there has been much criticism as the point of the trial to prove standard of proof that the

Pros And Cons Of Liquidated Contract
Scenario 1
Most of businesses would like to add a liquidated damages clause (or agreed damages clause) in their
business contracts, as it protects the parties of contract not to being any breach. Also it helps to
provide certainty, avoid disputes and provide an incentive to enter into the contracts. The aim of this
clause is to compensate the losses of innocent party by the guilty party, but not penalize the party in
breach by requesting party in breach too many fines. To deter Mode Designs for any delay, PLC
should insert a liquidated damages clause at the time they made contract.
Liquidated damages or specified sums are provided by parties in their contract. They are effective in
the event of there is a breach. The party in breach must pay a specified sum of money to innocent
party, or the party in breach may lose a specified sum of money. If the losses of the innocent party are
greater than the liquidated damages, he can only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If those situations pointed out are the reasons of delay, PLC and Mode Designs should determine the
liquidated damages or specific sums that Mode Designs must pay until the contract is finished. The
liquidated damages should define specifically in order to avoid lawsuits. They should provide
information that they based on to prove the reliable of the specific sums. Even though the situations
caused the delay are not applicable for the contract, PLC and Mode Designs should also record those
situations in the contract.
PLC and Mode Designs must define clearly the events may incur at the time contract is made. In the
case that the delay is arisen because of the third party, Mode Designs should or should not pay the
liquidated damages. In the event of the delay is occurred by human error, for example: wrong wall
color or fire, whether Mode Designs needs to pay specific sums to PLC.

Negative Effects Of Social Media Essay
Social media in this day and age weighs heavy on our everyday lives. Society tends to spend way too
much time on their mobile devices and computers on social media of all sorts including but not limited
to Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. It can create unwanted problems in relationships, weight gain
due to lack of physical activity, It may distract you for long periods of time without realizing it and
delay you from real world responsibilities. Social media may be one of the biggest issues this society
has. Another issue social media causes, it makes us lazy as a whole. We lose the ability to spell, use
proper grammar, or even punctuation. One of the biggest problems with social media is the unwanted
problems in a relationship. People spend way too much time on their devices and instead of spending
their much needed free time with their families. Using social media during family time is not good
family practice. Social media may help with some everyday activities but during family time can be
unacceptable for some people and may actually hurt their feelings. This can also make the other party
feel unimportant or ignored, creating a tense barrier in a relationship. This is something that I myself
have to work on. My family says I spend way too much time on my cell phone looking onto
Facebook. One might think that he/she doesn t spend a lot of time on the social media but we do. It

Becoming A Saint Research Paper
The process of becoming a saint is a prolonged one, it can take up to five years just to earn the title,
Saint . But if there is someone there who wants to be a saint, I will be telling you the step by step on
how you can earn this title. The first step is to die, as we believe that Saints are in heaven with God.
This means at some point after thier death, word of mouth from someone who knew the potential
saint, or a member of the religous community asks their local bishop to begin the cause for
canonization. As soon as the bishop agrees, the potential Saint receives the title, Servant Of God.
Next, a formal review is undertaken, guided by historians and theologians; the bishop may decide to
send the cause to Rome, at the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. This department determines if
the potential saint has shown heroic sanctity in their lifetime, worthy of imitation. To illustrate my
point, did they live a life marked by virtuous actions? Did they do good works out of love of God and
neighbors? If so, with the Pope s decree, they are declared, Venerable. ... Show more content on

instantaneous, lasting, and unexplainable. An example of verifying this criteria, is doctors and

Gender Stereotyping In Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs
The first princess Walt Disney s studio brought to life was none other than Snow White. The
eponymous animated film is still a well known story since it was released in 1937. In many ways the
film does not hold up to today s standards, and it is devoid of any characters worth being interested in.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs has some of the most overt gender stereotyping, and relies on
centuries old tropes to tell a story that was problematic to begin with. While Snow White may not be
as popular as Moana, she is still a prominent part of the princess line up. After eighty years and
multiple re releases, Snow White s iconic image is practically synonymous with Disney. With Disney
s worldwide influence on children and media, it s hard not to think of the repercussions of the princess
phenomenon. Now, what s so wrong about Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs ? It s just a film after
all, meant for entertainment. The problem is how heavily the story relies on sheer dumb luck, and it
reinforces antiquated ideas of the gender binary. Let s start with Snow White, the young and radiant
princess who sings merrily as she does chores in tattered clothes. Nothing can keep this girl down for
long. She is cheerful and oblivious for the vast majority of the story, and is only able to live because a
guy she barely knew kissed her. There is only ever one dream that Snow White aspires towards, and
she sings Someday My Prince Will Come to make that perfectly clear. Snow White never

The Negative Effects Of Television Violence On Children
Children aged five to 16 spend an average of six and a half hours a day in front of a screen...
(Wakefield). But unfortunately, much of the television today is full of violence. Scientists believe that
the effects of TV violence on children and teenagers may cause them to become immune to the
consequence of violence, terror or horror, cause them to be unable to handle their problems in a
healthy form and cause them to copy, imitate, the violent behavior they see on the television.
Therefore, there needs to be a removal of violence from cartoons such as the ones on Boomerang, as it
is negatively affecting children.
One cause from the effect of violence from screen time or TV is: it can cause children or teenagers to
become immune to the consequence of violence, terror or horror. Children and teenagers can become
immune or not affected as a result of violence when they watch violent cartoons.
One opposing this might state that if violent cartoons are removed than that takes away the right of
choice for what people can watch. But, the programming of kids shows, normally cartoons, displays
up to 20 violent acts hourly. Eventually, this could cause them to be immune to violence if they are
watching it six and a half hours a day.
The AACAP(Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry) states that if children are watching a great
amount of violence on TV then they are more likely to not connect pain and negativity with violence.
Television violence affects children through a

Arguments Against Altruism
Altruism and profit are often at different ends of the spectrum when it comes to medicine and health
care as a whole. Altruism is the belief and practice of self less concern for others over a person s own
self. One of the biggest problems in our health care system today and possibly even during Henrietta s
time is that medicine and health care as a whole are so commercialized and are only concerned with
earning a profit. Henrietta s cells were stolen without any notice and her family was not compensated
for this crime. Eventually Henrietta s cells became so important and eventually earned researchers
millions of dollars. The theft of her cells had nothing to do with Henrietta as a person, but rather the
doctors and researchers wanting to make a dollar off of a dead woman s cells. Dr. Gey and others did
not know that Henrietta s cells were going to change medicine but the fact that they did change
medicine and no compensation was given to Henrietta and her family show that many doctors are not
concerned with their patients, they are more concerned about their paycheck and whether or not they
will be remembered in history forever. Out of all of Henrietta s children, Zakariyya was the absolute
angriest. He was angry that the HeLa cells were used for nothing but profit ... Show more content on

there were also doctors whose research actually made a difference and helped the medical

Ancient Maya Civilization And Colonial America
The purpose of this essay is to answer the question To what extent, if any, did ancient Maya
civilization contribute to society in colonial America? .
To begin formulating an answer to this question, ancient Maya civilization was broadly researched in
books from various libraries. Suspected contributions of Maya civilization were recorded and further
researched in books and online resources that were focused on specific aspects of Maya civilization
such as astronomy, architecture, agriculture, mathematics, and food production. Research was then
conducted about civilization in colonial America through various books and online resources to
determine how colonial America was impacted by each of the suspected contributions of ancient Maya
civilization.

Language Of Haitian Voodoo
Most Haitians are Christians who practice within the catholic faith, 7th day Adventist, Protestants,
Jehovah witnesses and more. In contrast to being Christians, many Haitians practices Voodoo. Within
this belief, they practice rituals to help bind the body and the soul. Voodoo is a form of magic
described by many Haitians as a former form of healing and meditation of the troubled spirit. Many
Haitians also proceed to explain that the magic of voodoo have evolved to a form of black magic,
where those who practices it take haughtiness aim to cause harm to their enemies. The native language
of Haiti is Haitian Creole. This is a language that was created from the different tribes in Africa that
was brought to Haiti as slaves. To communicate with each other, they were left with no choice but to
create a common way understanding. In the Haitian Creole language, there is a vast number of
different sounds within the dialect. The sounds are used as an exaggeration to the meaning of the
word. An example of this is saying anmey , which is usually screamed out as a cry for help. Because

Social Media As Forms Of Electronic Communication
When my generation was growing up we used to hear things from our parents like you watch too
much television . Today, that could easily translate to sound like the same in regards to the use of
Social Media. Merriam Webster s Dictionary defines social media as forms of electronic
communication through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal
messages, and other content (Social Media). Social Media provides great tools and features for social
interaction with others in the form of file sharing including photos, videos, and real time chat. Some of
the most common and popular social sites are FaceBook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram. Social
Media sites provide numerous entertainment features, as well as a plethora of ways for people from all
over the world to connect with each other, make new friends, or connect with old ones. I feel these
sites truly share a common goal of uniting, connecting, and bringing people closer together but, there
is a dark side to be noted. Social Media, if used in moderation, can be a useful tool indeed but, like
anything else when used excessively, it can be dangerous to our mental health and well being. The
abuse of Social Media can have addictive qualities which may adversely affect ones mental health.
Regardless of its effects though, Social Media is still widely used for various purposes in society and
is no doubt here to stay. FaceBook for example, has grown enormously popular in recent years and

Relationships in Good Country People, by Flannery...
Flannery O Connor s Good Country People is a story told through the examination of the relationships
between the four main characters. All of the characters have distinct feelings about the others, from
misunderstanding to contempt. Both Joy Hulga, the protagonist, and Manley Pointer, the antagonist,
are multi faceted characters. While all of the characters have different levels of complexity, Joy Hulga
and Manley Pointer are the deepest and the ones with the most obvious facades.
The first character we encounter is Mrs. Freeman. She is the wife of Mrs. Hopewell s tenant farmer.
She is a very outspoken woman, and she [can] never be brought to admit herself wrong on any point
(O Connor 180). Mrs. Freeman is a gossip; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mrs. Freeman knows she cannot compete with Mrs. Hopewell monetarily, but she always gets the last

Mrs. Freeman is a very domineering woman. In comparison to her husband, she is the wheel behind
the wheel (O Connor 181). Enjolras classifies Mrs. Freeman as self righteous (36). Because she is not
the landowner, she knows she must be careful in her contempt for Mrs. Hopewell s possessions.
Although she is not as materially wealthy as Mrs. Hopewell, she takes great pride in her daughters.
Mrs. Freeman revels in the fact that Glynese and Carramae have admirers, while Joy Hulga, though
twice their ages, has never had a relationship with a boy.
When Mrs. Hopewell is not in earshot, Mrs. Freeman addresses Joy as Hulga. Mrs. Freeman is
intrigued by Joy Hulga s wooden leg. It is one of the deformities with which she is so fascinated.
Mitchell writes that Mrs. Freeman is fascinated by the leg, but it is a secret infection, spiritual and
psychological in nature, of which the leg provides intimations (2). 1 think Mrs. Freeman calls Joy by
the name she chose because she derives secret pleasure in irritating her.
Asals brings forth the idea that Mrs. Freeman is a symbolic mother to Manley Pointer. Both are given
the last words in the scenes in which they last appear in the story. Since Joy Hulga has turned out to be
as naive as Mrs. Hopewell, Manley is shown to be as evil as Mrs. Freeman can presumably become

Greenhouse Gases And Its Impact On The Climate
Greenhouse Gases and its impact on the Climate
All over the world scientist have witnessed a serious of bizarre events occur. From the vanishing of
coral reefs in the tropics to melting ice caps in the polar hemispheres. These are all sure signs of some
of the strange phenomenon s that are accompanied by climate change. According to the Environmental
Protection Agency, Climate change is referred to as, A significant change in the climate that lasts for
extended periods over time. These changes include; an increase or decrease in Earths temperatures or
an alter in wind patterns. These changes may occur over several decades and in some cases even
century s. (EPA)
Humanity has contributed greatly to Earths climate. Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolutions,
our atmosphere has been impacted with large amounts of greenhouse gases. Human activities such as;
using automobiles, burning fossil fuels (oil, gas and coal), and farming livestock have pumped large
amounts of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane into our ozone. The choices we make today
have a dangerous domino effect on many of Earth s biomes and species. For example, burning fossil
fuels can lead to rising temperatures, which melts the polar ice caps, causing earth s sea levels to rise
at an alarming rate, leaving many species to go endangered or extinct. Although we don t always see
these changes suddenly, future generations with be greatly affected. Those who leave near the coastal

Susan Cooper and Native Activism
In her book Spirited Encounters, Cooper mentioned during her young adult life and through her

them back items that were once belong to them and their ancestors. For example, Native Americans
request to get back Alcatraz Island from the government was denied even though it was supposed to

To Native Americans, some of the objects were created by their makers with the intent that the objects
would disintegrate naturally, so it is wrong to try to preserve those objects (67). Moreover, Native
Americans think that if the objects were to be return to them, then it is not right for museums to tell
them how to take care of the objects (72). A successful protest, for example, is the protest against
exhibits that were being set up in celebration of Columbus Quincentenary. While Columbus is view as
hero in many American s eyes, he left Native Americans with a painful memory of enslaving and the
bad treatment from the Colonists. In protesting to stop the celebration, protestors also hoped to re
educate the public about Columbus arrival in the Natives point of view (109 113). Due to these
protests, many exhibitions were canceled. The exhibition, Seed of Change at the National Museum of
Natural History tried to avoid the discussion of Columbus by focusing on things rather than people

The Common Theme Of Martyrdom Within The Death Of Socrates...
Deanna Rose Palevo Professor Heller ART 105 07 Final Term Paper 12/06/2016 The Common Theme
of Martyrdom within The Death of Socrates and The Execution of Saint Barbara When walking
through a museum, one notices the immense variation within every piece. Each work contains one or a
few specific themes, and its own unique interpretation of said theme. Common themes may include,
but are of course not limited to that of life, birth, beauty, power and strength, heroism, death, and
beliefs. In this paper, I wish to focus on the themes of both belief and death within two separate
pieces. Within these pieces, the themes of death and belief go perfectly hand in hand. The Death of
Socrates and The Execution of Saint Barbara both exemplify the conjoining of two themes to create an
entirely new idea; martyrdom. Both of these pieces can be found at The Metropolitan Museum of Art
in New York City. The first piece I am focusing on is entitled The Death of Socrates. It is painted with
oil on canvas by a French artist named Jacques Louis David in 1787. This image depicts the true story
of the trial of Socrates. Socrates was an Athenian philosopher and teacher who constantly challenged
the beliefs and politics of his state. He sought to teach the youth of Athens his methods of philosophy
and politics. In 399 BC, Socrates was accused of impiety (specifically not believing in the gods that
Athens believed in) and corruption of youth. The jury of Athens decided that Socrates was guilty of

Thesis Of The Open Secret Book Summary
Lessie Newbigin was a cross cultural practicing missionary. Newbigin is well known for bringing
multiple denominations into one single church . Newbigin spent forty years as a missionary in India
before returning to England Much of the influential impact that Newbigin had in mission work was
not until Newbigin was in his 70s. Newbigin wanted humans to have a personal reconciliation with
God. Newbigin understood the gospel as public truth not as personal spirituality . Newbigin believed
that a missionary encounter required that the church embodied a comprehensive story over against the

mission is essential for revival. The Thesis of The Open Secret is the Christian mission is best
understood in three ways: as proclaiming the kingdom of the Father, as sharing in the life of the son,
and as bearing the witness of the Spirit. After rooting mission in the activity of the Triune God, he then

Essay on Happiness and Social Status in Great Expectations
Charles Dickens uses his own opinions to develop the larger than life characters in Great Expectations.
The novel is written from the point of view of the protagonist, Pip. Pip guides the reader through his
life, describing the different stages from childhood to manhood. Many judgments are made regarding
the other characters, and Pip s views of them are constantly changing according to his place in the
social hierarchy. For instance, Pip feels total admiration that, later, turns to total shame for the man
who raised him, Joe Gargery. The primary theme in this novel questions whether being in a higher
social and economic class helps a person to achieve true happiness. This idea is shown through Pip s

by the goodness and love of Joe. He has been taught that humans of all societal levels are important.
Pip is content at the forge until pompous Uncle Pumblechook, Joe s uncle, takes him to visit to Satis

Equity And Equality For Students
Equity and equality for students is all about enabling fairness and ensuring that all the students are
given the best possible chance to succeed in life irrespective of their identities or backgrounds
University of Birmingham (2015). In the course, we have learned that equity leads to success in
academic institutions and should therefore be encouraged. We have also learned that diversity is about
recognising, valuing and celebrating all the people from different backgrounds that live within our
societies. It is about creating a universal environment that is inclusive of these differences, where we
all feel welcome, valued and supported to succeed whatever our background or identity.
Equity and fair treatments in schools should however not be perceived to be about minority rights .
Rather, they should be viewed to cater for every situation in the learning environments and protects
every student from discrimination on the basis of their age, disability, pregnancy and maternity, race,
religion or belief, gender identity, marriage and civil partnership, sex and sexual orientation. The miss
conception has led to standardization of academic programs and the achievements that the students are
expected to achieve, irrespective of their backgrounds and capabilities, which is actually counter
productive. The question is, Does equality and equity mean treating everybody the same? According

Violence In Mccarthy s Blood Meridian
McCarthy s novel, Blood Meridian, is an interesting story about a boy who grows up in the chaos of
the world, but unlike most authors, McCarthy, creates a more complete image of humanity. McCarthy
includes violence and barbarism as a natural part of who we are as humans. The protagonist, the kid,
grew up with a father who was a drunken teacher who did not care for him or teach him how to read
or write. The kid was not taken care of, wasn t shown love, and wasn t given love; therefore he did not
know how to care or what being taken care of was. In the very first pages of the novel, McCarthy
constructs a violent image of the kid by stating, ... in him broods already a taste for violence

The gang and the judge seem to be killing for economic incentives and personal pleasure, which the
kid partakes in but then eventually grows out of. The kid s and the reader s attention and development
for compassion, care, or basic morality develop as McCarthy draws attention to the senseless violence
that is taking place around the kid. The kid is shown giving mercy twice in this novel, and not
celebrating the death of innocence like the other, especially the judge; McCarthy shows the judge s
submission to violence when he states, war is god (261). For me, I understood this statement from the
judge as if he was staying that war is ultimate, all powerful, or the last or fundamental level of things.
Politically I do agree that war is god. The power of coercion is ultimate and paramount to any other
for of power. For example, if I wanted a dollar from another person who did not want to give it to me,
I could try to persuade them or bribe them, but if that doesn t work, my ability to over power them,
and hurt them will ultimately force them to acquiesce. However this ideology of war is god spiritually
and mentally is detrimental to the development of compassion, care, or any kind of moral
development. This is where the audience and the kid begin to see a stark difference between
themselves and the judge. Although McCarthy doesn t reveal how the kid came about a sense of
compassion or care or the power if goodness, he does highlight the power of violence. I think that
McCarthy believes and has hope in humanity, as displayed through the moral development of the kid,
but I think he also understands and is trying to display the nature of violence that is in us even at a
young age, as if to make an argument for the necessity of compassion and a nurturing

Persuasive Essay For Education
If you don t use it, you lose it. This saying is a 100% true about knowledge from education over the
years. The brain is a muscle that must be exercised like any other muscle. We have to continue to grow
and strengthen our abilities. One way we do this is by attending college to extend our knowledge in a
field of study. I decided to finish my bachelors after years of not knowing what to complete it in. Not
everyone takes the same path to achieve their goals, but it is a good idea for everyone at some point to
continue learning and perfecting their skills. The worst thing a person can do is to become content and
comfortable in their ways. We work every day to make ourselves better. We exercise and do things to
improve your physical appearance. Why would we not do the same for our minds? There are many
sayings and clichés out there about why we should continue learning. These sayings aren t in vein,
without knowledge we are doomed to make mistakes of the past or miss out on new opportunities .
Knowledge gives us the confidence to step out of our comfort zone and try new ideas; it also helps us
not make the same mistakes of previous people. We grow and try to perfect our crafts so we are
adaptable, forward focused employees. In this paper I will discuss why I decided to continue my
education and why I think it is a good idea for everyone else too. My path was not a traditional one. I
went to college right out of high school, which sounds traditional, but I did not finish. I took classes
for two years. I was young and thought I knew what I wanted to do, but I really had no idea. I bounced
around from field to field. I started my freshman year majoring in Zoology and ending my time there
in Public Relations. After $40,000 in student loan debt, I decided it was best if I took time off to figure
out what I wanted to get my degree in. I moved home and worked odd jobs just trying to figure out
what I wanted to do in life. It wasn t until 2008 when I started working for an industrial supply
company that I realized I needed to finish my bachelors. It was the first job I had that I saw potential
and growth. The position I took was a sales/management role. The position involved inventory

Should Laptops Be Allowed In The Classroom
The Tools They Use: Should Laptops Be Allowed In the Classroom? In today s classrooms, laptops
are becoming more and more prevalent. Their use has been fervently debated, with some teachers in
support of allowing students unrestricted access to their laptops and some in support of banning them
completely. With restrictions for classes such as mathematics or science, laptops should be allowed in
other classroom settings because they allow students to take thorough notes and to jot down more of
the lecture. Several arguments are presented by those in favor of banning laptops in the classroom, and
many of them are echoed. In a New Yorker article by Dan Rockmore, The Case for Banning Laptops
In the Classroom, Rockmore claims that students who take long hand notes instead of taking notes on
their laptops retain the information better and are less distracted than those with unfettered internet
access (Rockmore para. 7). He states that taking long hand notes helps students integrate the
information and creates deeper modes of recall (Rockmore para. 7). Rockmore cites studies from
universities like Cornell and Princeton to support his assertions (Rockmore para. 5, 7). Aside from
shallow note retention, he implies that laptops can be distracting to students because they are portals
for socialization and entertainment (Rockmore para. 9). National Public Radio s James Doubek shares
similar arguments. In his article, Attention Students: Put Your Laptops Away, he brings up the

most of the song Hotel California. However the later creation of the album and single was the names
changed, make Felder s name last of in the listing.
According to the band, Hotel California is a song about materialism in American. It is an
understanding of the temptation and greed that fills the streets, especially in the lifestyle of people
living in California. Don Henley, once said, It s basically a song about the dark underbelly of the
American dream and about excess in America, which is something we knew a lot about Ultimate
Classic rock.com). It has a main theme, which is corruption and materialism in Los Angeles. Don
Henley, on CBS s 60 minutes quoted that It s a song about the dark underbelly of the American
Dream, and about excess in America which was something we knew about (CBS.com). Nevertheless
of the true meaning, the popular culture of the time the song was released believed that it was satanic

Equipment Review of the Vertec and Bertec
Equipment Review
The equipment in this study includes a Vertec vertical jump measuring system (Figure 1) and a Bertec
force plate (Figure 2). The Vertec vertical jump measuring system measures individuals vertical jump
capabilities in inches. The Bertec force plate measures the ground reaction forces in newtons produced
when an individual performs a jump and when they land following a jump. The Vertec vertical jump
measuring system is constructed out of a steel frame and has horizontal vanes that rotate when the
hand touches them. The vanes spaced half inch between and the height of the vanes is adjustable from
6 feet to 12 feet tall. The Vertec vertical jump measuring system is considered the gold standard for
measuring vertical jump height and its measurements have been found reliable.1 The Bertec force
plate is a much more complicated device. It uses strain gauges to measure the force applied to the
force plate. The force applied to the plate by the subject will be equal to the forces the plate applies to
the subject as determined by Newton s third law. When the strain gauge is compressed the resistance
of the current running through the gauge decreases however when the strain gauge is placed under
tension the resistance of the current traveling through it increases. The Bertec force plate measures
forces applied to the device in the x, y and z axis using strain gauges. The strain gauges produce
signals when force is applied to the force plate surface, which are

An Analysis Of Irwin Shaw s The Girls
The Girls in Their Summer Dresses is a short story by Irwin Shaw, which presents readers with a daily
basis relationship situation of a young woman and her husband. The story goes through refined
changes of tone and mood in the dialogue; the narration is done from a dramatic perspective, which
creates suspense and tension. The author lets the story advance through the characters conversation. In
addition, the writer s voice comes in to describe the emotional states, reactions, and tone of voice of
the characters as this shift during the conversations. The dialogue attains a meaningful colloquial tone,
which is mirrored in the dramatic dialogue. This assertion is depicted in the spouse s point of view, the
couple s trust and love for one another, as well as their discussions. From these expressions, the reader
notices jealousy, arrogance, and frustration. Irwin Shaw articulates these illustrations through
character, imagery, and tone.
The main conflict in The Girls in Their Summer Dresses occurs between Michael and Frances, his
spouse of five years. A conflict is a scuffle between contrasting forces. As such, the opposing forces
here are Frances and Michael. As the couple strolls in New York City s streets, Frances remarks that
Michael is looking at other women passing by. As shocking as this comment might be, we get to learn
that Michael s behavior is not a new thing. Nevertheless, it makes Frances feel tremendously sad and
self conscious, despite the fact that she is

Affluenza, The Truman Show
In everyday life you are exposed to media. The media uses techniques such as: propaganda, product
placement, and facts to alter how you view a certain thing. You may not realize how the media twist
and turns such little details to change your perception. My personal view on many things were
changed in time as little as a week. We watched Affluenza, The Truman Show, and many documentary
s that showed how the media can change how you think. One technique that many Medias use is
advertisement. They use advertisement to get you to buy whatever they are trying to sell. Most
advertisements use statistics that are realistic, scare tactics, product placement, and some even show
bias toward another. In the Truman Show, Truman s wife was advertising coco and a knife. She kept
repeating that, that was what Truman drank and used to cook with. She made sure the label was facing
forward when she was talking about it, this is an example of product placement. This technique of
using advertisement was to pull the viewers watching the show to go out and buy the items. They may
also squeeze in sponsors that you may not even realize. For example in the movie elf Coca Cola was
hidden throughout the movie, but was never talked about generally. It catches many eyes and
promotes the product itself without having to even mention it. ... Show more content on

They may mislead the viewer by using the bandwagon effect, which is a phenomenon whereby the
rate of uptake of beliefs, ideas, fads and trends increases the more that they have already been adopted
by others. In Affluenza it explains how when a new product comes out, you aren t cool if you don t
have it. This technique causes many people to go and buy the new item because it s newer and They
will be accepted if they buy it . Affluenza also explain how people seek self esteem when shopping, so
the product producer will always pay attention and research the ages and base their products off of

African Slavery Under King Leopold II Of Belgium
African area by negotiating treaties, establishing military posts, and forcing many Muslim slave
traders out of the region. After the Berlin West Africa Conference in 1884 and 1885, King Leopold II
of Belgium was granted administrative powers over the region titled, the Congo Free State.
Although promising he would advance his private property to improve the lives of the native Africans,
he immediately seized any vacant land in which no European was living on and deemed it the state s
property. His servants working under him were then encouraged to exploit this land for the benefit of
their own with little regard to the native s own lives. Under King Leopold II s administration, the
Congo Free State was divided into two economic zones: the

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Metal Awnings
Wondering What Type Of Awnings To Choose? Here s How Metal And Fabric Compare
If you ve decided it s time to get awnings for your house windows, you might be overwhelmed with
all your choices. Unless you already know the kind of awnings you want, you may wonder which type
is best for your home.
You have two basic choices to begin with. You can install a metal or fabric awning. Each has its own
advantages and disadvantages, but both types work well, so you can t really go wrong no matter which
type you choose. Here is a look at how these options differ.
Awning Appearance
Metal awnings and fabric awnings look similar but since the materials are so different, you can tell
them apart quite easily. Metal awnings can be standing seam or flat metal.
If you have a metal roof, one of these awnings could look like a natural extension of the roof. They
come in a number of colors so you can match or contrast the colors of your home. Fabric awnings
have the most variety when it comes to appearance.
These awnings come in a range of colors, stripes, and patterns. Fabric awnings also come in a variety
of shapes since the fabric can take on the shape of the form beneath it. Fabric is also used on
retractable awnings since it can be rolled up easily and hidden when the awning is not in use.
Sun Protection
Metal awnings are solid material so they completely block the sun. Fabric awnings can let some light
filter through depending on the type of fabric you choose. Consider how

John Proctor has a dark secret, He possesses a major flaw he has had an affair with Abigail Williams,
and eventually he realizes what he has done to Elizabeth, He has committed adultery against his wife.
Due to the fact that Proctor has committed adultery against Elizabeth, he becomes a tragic hero, and
Abigail Williams shows that when she says I know how you clutched my back behind your house and
sweated like a stallion whenever I come near (Act I, lines 423 425). John broke his marriage vows, but
even though he regrets he has become a tragic hero. It s too late to regret he has sinned, he has ruined
his marriage with Elizabeth and now she is not pleased with him. Due to the fact that he has cheated
on Elizabeth, his outlook in life is negative, when He tells her I have not moved from there to there
without I think to please you (Act II, lines 159 161). The affair also caused Elizabeth to distrust John,
who for seven months was trying to get into her good graces and is tired of her suspicion. Because of
John s inability to control his desire and resist temptation, his life is being turned upside down by the
jealousy and need for revenge of Abigail, marking the beginning of his downfall and path to becoming
a tragic hero. As a result, the need for revenge of Abigail marks the beginning of John downfall. John
Proctor regrets of breaking his marriage vows, now his wife Elizabeth is being accused of witchcraft
by Abigail Williams. Based on the statement by

Financial and Monetary Economics Essay
Financial and Monetary Economics
Should we consider the Stock Market an efficient market.
In theory the Stock Market is said to be efficient as stock prices should follow a random walk, which,
means that stock price changes should be random and unpredictable, If stock prices were predictable
then this would prove that the stock market is inefficient as this implies that all available information
was not already impounded in stock prices. Hence the notion that stock prices reflect all available
information is known as the efficient market hypothesis (EMH). It was Professor Eugene Fama who
created the term EMH, in his paper Efficient Capital Markets and claimed that in efficient markets ...

The strong form of the EMH: Suggests that all information (public and private) is fully reflected in
asset prices. This means that not even insider information can be used to beat the market. Therefore
the only way to beat the market is by luck and chance only.
It can be noted that all three versions of EMH indicate a role for passive management and no role for
active management. As competition makes sure that any new information is reflected in stock prices.
Supporters of the EMH believe that active management is a wasted effort and that the expenses are
unjustifiable.
Fama disputed that in an active market of large numbers of well informed and intelligent investors,
stocks will be appropriately priced and reflect all available information. In these circumstances, no
information or analysis can be expected to result in out performance of an appropriate benchmark.
Because of the wide availability of public information, it is nearly impossible for an individual to beat
the market[1] .
Another Professor who also supports the EMH is Burton Malkeil; he popularized the notion of random
walk implication in his book A Walk Down Wall Street .
He suggested that throwing darts at the newspaper stock listing is as good a way

  • 2. Optimism And Pessimism In The Great Gatsby I believe that the three texts that I have studied contained moments of optimism and pessimism which in turn have shaped my opinion of the general vision and viewpoint. This alludes to the feelings and emotions portrayed through the omniscient camera in The King s Speech , the morally inclined narrator Nick Caraway in The Great Gatsby and the protagonist in the novel Foster . I was very intrigued to find out more about these societies and the vision the author/director hoped to convey. The Great Gatsby opens in the boom years in the summer of 1922, commonly known as the Jazz Age . The opening is conveyed as a mix of optimism and pessimism. At first we are introduced to Nick Caraway, A young man in the bond business who is ebullient ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In T.K.S, Bertie faced a barbaric upbringing which he solemnly shared with Logue. This is evident when he revealed how cruel his nanny was, tunelessly singing She pinch me so I d cry, and be sent away at once, then she wouldn t feed me, far far away. (speaks) Took three years for my parents to notice. As you can imagine, it caused some stomach problems. This left me feeling much more sympathetic towards Bertie and further implemented my pessimistic opinion of the portrayal of children in the past. This is also seen in T.G.G as Pammy, Daisy s daughter is only seen once during the entire 1920 s novel and we realise that she, like Bertie, had nannies who took care off her rather than her parents. A sense of negativity is also conveyed towards children here as Gatsby ,when first introduced to Pammy, was described as looking at the child with surprise. I don t think he had ever believed in its existence. she is described as an it and Gatsby then realises that he can t repeat the past with Daisy and that his obsessive longing for her was a waste of time. I believe that this pessimistic feeling was a factor in his volatility towards Tom in the Plaza. Similarly in Foster , Mildred like a predator, pounced on the innocent protagonist and questioned her about the Kinsella s personal affairs such as where does the old dog sleep, Is she allowed to spend.... . Mildred then inconsiderately informed the little girl of the Kinsella s boy s passing, stating sure didn t he follow that auld hound of theirs into the slurry tank and drown...... Compare And Contrast Crime And Punishment In Ancient Egypt This paper is to compare and contrast crime and punishment in the ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt mainly from the following three perspectives: religion, the purpose of punishment and women. In terms of religion, we can tell from the Laws of Hammurabi and the Egyptian papyri that the views of religion were both considered to be supreme in the ancient states. But there are some differences between the views of the religion, especially in the objective to which the people of two states believed in respectively. In the Laws of Hammurabi, there are some examples that prove the status of the nature, like the river, and, in some cases, the river was the symbol of justice which could prove whether the accused were guilty or not. Role Of Eglin Air Force Base During World War II Looking back to World War II, nobody ever thinks about who contributed to the war and how he or she contributed whether it be money, work, or even his or her own life. Few people in Florida and even in our local area understand the important role Eglin Air Force Base played during World War II. The primary mission of the Base during World War II was to perform operational suitability testing for the Army Air Corps. Eglin Air Force Base was originally started as Valparaiso Airport in 1933. There was a purchase of an arrow head shaped parcel of 137 acres. The area was cleared for use as an airdrome. In May 1941, the Army Air Corps designated Eglin as the Air Corps Proving Ground, removing it from the jurisdiction of the Southeast Air Corps Training Command and placing the base immediately under the control of the Chief of Air Corps. The primary purpose of the Proving Ground was to provide a station for tactical test of aircraft armament and accessory equipment and of aviation tactics and techniques. Due to increasing size, Eglin Field was renamed Eglin Field Military Reservation in recognition of its importance to the Air Corps. Appropriations of $202,536 were announced by Congressman Bob Sikes of Crestview in mid April 1941 for construction and installation of water, sewage, electrical facilities, sidewalks, roads, fences, parking areas, landscaping and for the construction of a sewage disposal plant. Submitted to the WPA headquarters in Washington, DC in late March, the request received presidential approval in April. Work continued apace on some projects on a 24 hour a day basis. • 5. Essay about Conflict Theory in Vietnam The history of Vietnam is one of great struggle and conflict. For centuries the vietnamese people have had no choice but to change their society by force in order to gain their own freedom and independence. Pivitol events in Vietnamese history such as the Battle of Bach Dang in 939 and the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954 are examples of how the conflict theory brought change to Vietnamese society and culture. For centuries Vietnam had been under Chinese rule. The Vietnamese people were an oppressed society and were exploited by the Chinese. Forced labour was brought upon the Vietnamese people, and there were many tyrannical Chinese governers along with constant demands of tribute for the Chinese rulers. This dramatic change which occurred in less than 25 years is all due to the conflict theory. Without the Battle of Bach Dang it is possible that Vietnam could still be under Chinese rule and the people would continue to be exploited. The French colonized Vietnam in two phases. The first occuring between 1859 1862 by occupying Saigon and surrounding areas in Mekong. In 1883 they annexed the Hanoi and Tonkin regions. In the early years of French rule, French administrators planned to change Vietnam socially, politically and economically. No respect was given to the Vietnamese people or their culture. Court officials ( called manderines ) were forced to report to colonial officials instead of the king, diminishing much of the kings power and role in society. High costs of colonial administrators caused the French to put high taxes on salt, opium, alcohol and land. Forced labour was also re introduced. French rule had left the Vietnamese people and their culture impoverished and very much opressed. By 1940 half of Vietnamese s population was landless. This is was one of the many crippling effects of French colonial rule in Vietnam. Although there had been many uprisings, protests and guerrilla groups formed to attempt to over throw the French, none were successful, and all attempts were crushed by the French military. • 7. The Relation Between Genetics And Physiology And Medicine Thomas H. Morgan: The relation of genetics to physiology and medicine. Genetics is the study of how hereditary characteristics or genes are inherited. The studies of genetics have first been recognized by Gregor Mendel. Gregor Mendel studied how traits were passed down from parent to offspring using pea plants. It was later discovered that Mendel s law of inheritance not only worked for pea plants but also on, animals and humans. Mendel s experiments gave rise to the importance of chromosomes in genetic experiments, crossing over, and linkage. Thomas H. Morgan experimented on Drosophila melanogaster, fruit flies to give further analysis of Mendel s two laws of inheritance. Morgan s work have been recognized for discovery of sex linked genes and the importance of understanding genes for medical practice, in which he discusses in his Nobel Prize lecture; The relation of genetics to physiology and medicine. To first understand sex linked inheritance we must understand Gregor Mendel s two laws of inheritance. Mendel s first law of inheritance or Law of Segregation, describes how each allele in a pair separates and forms into different gamete or sex cells, during the uniting of these sex cells (the sperm and the egg). The second law of inheritance or Law of independent assortment states that, a pair of alleles segregate or separate independently from the other allele in the union of the sex cells. Hatred is also shown in To Kill a Mockingbird, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, The Merchant of Venice, and in the Holocaust. The last example from To Kill a Mockingbird is when Mr.Radley shot at the kids when they trespassed onto his property. He had a reason for shooting it but he obviously showed hatred to anyone that stepped foot on his property. The first example of hatred shown in The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian is when Rowdy cuts off the Andruss Brothers braids and eyebrows after they beat up Junior. This quote comes from the part where Roger makes a racist joke and Junior feels he has to fight him. Junior shows hatred towards Roger by saying that the joke was the most racist thing that he has ever heard and by punching him in the face. • 9. An Analysis Of William Faulkner And Ernest Hemingway William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway were both wonderfully gifted and talented writers in their time. In As I Lay Dying and A Farewell to Arms, one can see the similarities and differences between Faulkner and Hemingway through their ability to draw from personal experiences to inspire their work, their narrative styles, and their use of language. William Faulkner was born in New Albany, Mississippi and trained as a pilot in the first Royal Canadian Air Force during World War 1. After the war, Faulkner began writing again. A friend told Faulkner to write about his native Mississippi. Inspired by the concept, Faulkner began writing about the places and people of his childhood, developing many colorful characters based on the real people he grew up with or heard about. Many of Faulkner s most successful pieces, including As I Lay Dying, took place in Yoknapatawpha County a place nearly identical to where he was raised. (Biography.com). Ernest Hemingway s background, while different from Faulkner s, also inspired his writing. He was working for a newspaper in Kansas City, when a friend suggested Hemingway volunteer for the American Field Service as an ambulance driver. In Europe, Hemingway had many of the experiences he used to pull from in writing A Farewell to Arms, including being wounded by a projectile exploding in the trenches and falling in love with a nurse who would become the model for Catherine Barkley (Roberts). Their narrating styles are vastly different. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In Australia, the adversary system is used as a means to achieve justice by proving the accused, beyond reasonable doubt, committed the crime. The judges dismissed the case within twenty minutes but it was later found that the evidence was contaminated. Other examples include R v. Rendell (1999) and R v. But if there is someone there who wants to be a saint, I will be telling you the step by step on how you can earn this title. The first step is to die, as we believe that Saints are in heaven with God. This means at some point after thier death, word of mouth from someone who knew the potential saint, or a member of the religous community asks their local bishop to begin the cause for canonization. As soon as the bishop agrees, the potential Saint receives the title, Servant Of God. This department determines if the potential saint has shown heroic sanctity in their lifetime, worthy of imitation. To illustrate my point, did they live a life marked by virtuous actions? The eponymous animated film is still a well known story since it was released in 1937. In many ways the film does not hold up to today s standards, and it is devoid of any characters worth being interested in. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs has some of the most overt gender stereotyping, and relies on centuries old tropes to tell a story that was problematic to begin with. While Snow White may not be as popular as Moana, she is still a prominent part of the princess line up. After eighty years and multiple re releases, Snow White s iconic image is practically synonymous with Disney. With Disney s worldwide influence on children and media, it s hard not to think of the repercussions of the princess phenomenon. Now, what s so wrong about Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs ? It s just a film after all, meant for entertainment. The problem is how heavily the story relies on sheer dumb luck, and it reinforces antiquated ideas of the gender binary. Let s start with Snow White, the young and radiant princess who sings merrily as she does chores in tattered clothes. Nothing can keep this girl down for long. But unfortunately, much of the television today is full of violence. Scientists believe that the effects of TV violence on children and teenagers may cause them to become immune to the consequence of violence, terror or horror, cause them to be unable to handle their problems in a healthy form and cause them to copy, imitate, the violent behavior they see on the television. Therefore, there needs to be a removal of violence from cartoons such as the ones on Boomerang, as it is negatively affecting children. One cause from the effect of violence from screen time or TV is: it can cause children or teenagers to become immune to the consequence of violence, terror or horror. Children and teenagers can become immune or not affected as a result of violence when they watch violent cartoons. One opposing this might state that if violent cartoons are removed than that takes away the right of choice for what people can watch. But, the programming of kids shows, normally cartoons, displays up to 20 violent acts hourly. Eventually, this could cause them to be immune to violence if they are watching it six and a half hours a day. Altruism is the belief and practice of self less concern for others over a person s own self. One of the biggest problems in our health care system today and possibly even during Henrietta s time is that medicine and health care as a whole are so commercialized and are only concerned with earning a profit. Henrietta s cells were stolen without any notice and her family was not compensated for this crime. Eventually Henrietta s cells became so important and eventually earned researchers millions of dollars. The theft of her cells had nothing to do with Henrietta as a person, but rather the doctors and researchers wanting to make a dollar off of a dead woman s cells. Dr. Gey and others did not know that Henrietta s cells were going to change medicine but the fact that they did change medicine and no compensation was given to Henrietta and her family show that many doctors are not concerned with their patients, they are more concerned about their paycheck and whether or not they will be remembered in history forever. Each work contains one or a few specific themes, and its own unique interpretation of said theme. Common themes may include, but are of course not limited to that of life, birth, beauty, power and strength, heroism, death, and beliefs. In this paper, I wish to focus on the themes of both belief and death within two separate pieces. Within these pieces, the themes of death and belief go perfectly hand in hand. The Death of Socrates and The Execution of Saint Barbara both exemplify the conjoining of two themes to create an entirely new idea; martyrdom. Both of these pieces can be found at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The first piece I am focusing on is entitled The Death of Socrates. It is painted with oil on canvas by a French artist named Jacques Louis David in 1787. This image depicts the true story of the trial of Socrates. Socrates was an Athenian philosopher and teacher who constantly challenged the beliefs and politics of his state. He sought to teach the youth of Athens his methods of philosophy and politics. Equity And Equality For Students Equity and equality for students is all about enabling fairness and ensuring that all the students are given the best possible chance to succeed in life irrespective of their identities or backgrounds University of Birmingham (2015). In the course, we have learned that equity leads to success in academic institutions and should therefore be encouraged. It is about creating a universal environment that is inclusive of these differences, where we all feel welcome, valued and supported to succeed whatever our background or identity. Equity and fair treatments in schools should however not be perceived to be about minority rights . Rather, they should be viewed to cater for every situation in the learning environments and protects every student from discrimination on the basis of their age, disability, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, gender identity, marriage and civil partnership, sex and sexual orientation. The kid is shown giving mercy twice in this novel, and not celebrating the death of innocence like the other, especially the judge; McCarthy shows the judge s submission to violence when he states, war is god (261). For me, I understood this statement from the judge as if he was staying that war is ultimate, all powerful, or the last or fundamental level of things. Politically I do agree that war is god. The power of coercion is ultimate and paramount to any other for of power. For example, if I wanted a dollar from another person who did not want to give it to me, I could try to persuade them or bribe them, but if that doesn t work, my ability to over power them, and hurt them will ultimately force them to acquiesce. However this ideology of war is god spiritually and mentally is detrimental to the development of compassion, care, or any kind of moral development. This is where the audience and the kid begin to see a stark difference between themselves and the judge. Although McCarthy doesn t reveal how the kid came about a sense of compassion or care or the power if goodness, he does highlight the power of violence. I think that McCarthy believes and has hope in humanity, as displayed through the moral development of the kid, but I think he also understands and is trying to display the nature of violence that is in us even at a young age, as if to make an argument for the necessity of compassion and a nurturing ... Their use has been fervently debated, with some teachers in support of allowing students unrestricted access to their laptops and some in support of banning them completely. With restrictions for classes such as mathematics or science, laptops should be allowed in other classroom settings because they allow students to take thorough notes and to jot down more of the lecture. Several arguments are presented by those in favor of banning laptops in the classroom, and many of them are echoed. In a New Yorker article by Dan Rockmore, The Case for Banning Laptops In the Classroom, Rockmore claims that students who take long hand notes instead of taking notes on their laptops retain the information better and are less distracted than those with unfettered internet access (Rockmore para. 7). He states that taking long hand notes helps students integrate the information and creates deeper modes of recall (Rockmore para. 7). The fact that Raef s manage was trying to influence his decisions makes an obvious bias to who Raef might consider asking onto the team. • 42. Equipment Review of the Vertec and Bertec Equipment Review The equipment in this study includes a Vertec vertical jump measuring system (Figure 1) and a Bertec force plate (Figure 2). The Vertec vertical jump measuring system measures individuals vertical jump capabilities in inches. The Bertec force plate measures the ground reaction forces in newtons produced when an individual performs a jump and when they land following a jump. The Vertec vertical jump measuring system is constructed out of a steel frame and has horizontal vanes that rotate when the hand touches them. The vanes spaced half inch between and the height of the vanes is adjustable from 6 feet to 12 feet tall. The Vertec vertical jump measuring system is considered the gold standard for measuring vertical jump height and its measurements have been found reliable.1 The Bertec force plate is a much more complicated device. It uses strain gauges to measure the force applied to the force plate. The force applied to the plate by the subject will be equal to the forces the plate applies to the subject as determined by Newton s third law. When the strain gauge is compressed the resistance of the current running through the gauge decreases however when the strain gauge is placed under tension the resistance of the current traveling through it increases. The Bertec force plate measures forces applied to the device in the x, y and z axis using strain gauges. The strain gauges produce signals when force is applied to the force plate surface, which are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

You may not realize how the media twist and turns such little details to change your perception. My personal view on many things were changed in time as little as a week. We watched Affluenza, The Truman Show, and many documentary s that showed how the media can change how you think. One technique that many Medias use is advertisement. They use advertisement to get you to buy whatever they are trying to sell. Most advertisements use statistics that are realistic, scare tactics, product placement, and some even show bias toward another. In the Truman Show, Truman s wife was advertising coco and a knife. She kept repeating that, that was what Truman drank and used to cook with. She made sure the label was facing forward when she was talking about it, this is an example of product placement. This technique of using advertisement was to pull the viewers watching the show to go out and buy the items. They may also squeeze in sponsors that you may not even realize. For example in the movie elf Coca Cola was hidden throughout the movie, but was never talked about generally. It catches many eyes and promotes the product itself without having to even mention it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 48. Financial and Monetary Economics Essay Financial and Monetary Economics Should we consider the Stock Market an efficient market. In theory the Stock Market is said to be efficient as stock prices should follow a random walk, which, means that stock price changes should be random and unpredictable, If stock prices were predictable then this would prove that the stock market is inefficient as this implies that all available information was not already impounded in stock prices. Hence the notion that stock prices reflect all available information is known as the efficient market hypothesis (EMH). It was Professor Eugene Fama who created the term EMH, in his paper Efficient Capital Markets and claimed that in efficient markets ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The strong form of the EMH: Suggests that all information (public and private) is fully reflected in asset prices. This means that not even insider information can be used to beat the market. Therefore the only way to beat the market is by luck and chance only. It can be noted that all three versions of EMH indicate a role for passive management and no role for active management. As competition makes sure that any new information is reflected in stock prices. Supporters of the EMH believe that active management is a wasted effort and that the expenses are unjustifiable. Fama disputed that in an active market of large numbers of well informed and intelligent investors, stocks will be appropriately priced and reflect all available information. In these circumstances, no information or analysis can be expected to result in out performance of an appropriate benchmark. Because of the wide availability of public information, it is nearly impossible for an individual to beat the market[1] . Another Professor who also supports the EMH is Burton Malkeil; he popularized the notion of random walk implication in his book A Walk Down Wall Street . He suggested that throwing darts at the newspaper stock listing is as good a way ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
