Body and Nature as Metaphor in A Thousand Acres

[T]he female body is a reservoir, a virgin patch of still, pooled water where the fetus comes to term.

[A] fetus is a benign tumor, a vampire who steals in order to live. (Paglia p.11)
The epigraph to this novel is from The Ancient People and the Newly Come :
The body repeats the landscape. They are the source of each other and create each other. We were

But the fluidity of interior life turns poisonous precisely because it is suppressed. All of it comes back
to the double edged sword of patriarchy and capitalist industrial farming, embodied by Larry. Ginny
and Rose are trying to figure out how to understand him better. I [that is, Ginny] feel like there s
treacherous undercurrents all the time. I think I m standing on solid ground, but then I discover that
there s something moving underneath it, shifting from place to place. There s always some mystery.
He doesn t say what he means. (104). From Larry, it spreads to all the other characters, like Ginny and
Ty: We had spent our life together practicing courtesy, putting the best face on things, harboring
secrets. (260) In the end, nobody can be trusted, the poison influences everbody.
Pete s death is a tragic enactment of this metaphor. He was always silently angry, trying to find some
way to rebel against Larry, but losing himself more and more bitterly in contemplating the target.
(306) It is only by way of metaphorizing the quarry that he can break the surface. Talking about the
waterfilled quarry and throwing stones in, he says: You hate to see that surface go unbroken. (249).
Then he contemplates the only way out: Pete stared past me. A breeze had come up, shattering the
surface of the water into shards of light. (251). Later that summer, he takes it: he

of her boots then she said something that made Meg s mother shake that there is such a thing as a
tesseract than Mrs. Whatsit left. The next morning after Meg went to school, Charles told Meg that
they are going to go and see the old ladies that live in the woods because he wanted to know what the

Moving the warehouse in between the shipping and receiving departments will reduce the amount of
time needed to pull orders for shipment thus reducing the staging time needed. By having one location
for both the finished goods and raw materials allows for the cross training between shipping and
receiving as well as allows both departments to have access to each part of the building they need
without adding extra work to one department.
(03) A final change that needs to be done is to update the administrative offices, and shipping and
receiving departments with new technology and ergonomically correct desks. This should be
implemented within 6 months which will allow the flow of information between the locations to much
faster. By improving the flow of communication it will allow the administration to advise if there is
changes needed in the schedule, and to be able to provide realistic information to Albatross Anchor s

Essay on The Presidency of Gerald R. Ford
The Presidency of Gerald R. Ford Gerald R. Ford was the 38th President of the United States, after
gaining the position through extraordinary circumstances. His good will and friendly demeanor helped
him climb the political ladder higher than even he had anticipated. His career in politics began with
his law firm, yet ended up in the oval office. While his presidency was short lived, it is remembered
due to numerous crucial decisions he had to make. After graduating from Yale with a law degree in
1941, Gerald R. Ford returned to his home town of Grand Rapids Michigan to start a law firm with his
friend Phillip Buchen. He also became active in local politics. However, less than a year passed before
he joined the Navy in 1942 to assist in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a matter of fact, his route to the presidency was more circumstantial than intentional. In 1973, Vice
President Spiro Agnew resigned from office due to a kick back scandal ( Gerald R. Ford Timeline 3).
President Richard Nixon then decided to select Ford as the new vice president, knowing that Ford s
reputation in Congress would make him the only candidate both houses and parties would accept. As
the vice president, Ford was not very active. Even more so, he intentionally chose to stay out of the
way; perhaps because he did not want to be associated with the actions and policies of the Nixon
administration. Next, as is popular knowledge, President Nixon resigned after the Watergate scandal
came to light, leaving Ford to become the President. Gerald R. Ford was sworn in on August 9, 1974,
as the United State s 38th president. In his inauguration speech, Ford was open about the bizarre
circumstances that led to him holding the position. He acknowledged to the people that he was not
chosen by them for the job as President. He continues to say, If you have not chosen me by secret
ballot, neither have I gained office by any secret promises. I have not campaigned either for the
Presidency or the Vice Presidency. I have not subscribed to any partisan platform. He spoke these
words to show the public who were skeptical of all politicians after the Watergate scandal that he
could be trusted. He knew without

Middle Ages Essay
Middle Ages
The history of the modern world derives from thousands of years of human history. Embedded in its
history are the many eras of man which have constructed our modern learning, art, beliefs, and order.
The middle ages, although represented as dark , backwards, and idle, were in fact a bridge linking the
classical and modern world. Medieval society may not have been in a sense glorious, but the era of
itself was a prime foundation of the modern world s newfound stability, a revival of the law and
teachings from the classical era, a reinvestment and reform in the church, and a precursor to the
golden age of art.
The government of the middle ages, as convoluted and variable as it was, ended up giving way to a

AS revolutionary as the transition was to the feudal system, the practice proved to be efficient in the
modern world.
The influence of universities and merchants, as seen, changed the kingdom. Medieval universities
were first formed in the 12th century AD after a need for educated public officials became evident.
Schools like the Law School at Bologna as well as medical schools gave towns lawyers, judges and
capable local officials. Other schools like the University of Paris taught scholars literature and
theology. The breed of Renaissance thinking was most likely developed in such places. Scholars like
Peter Abelard and Thomas Aquinas led an interest in the study of classical Greek and Roman
philosophy. This interest, along with challenged perspectives of the time eventually led to modern
science. Guilds, as afore mentioned, were monopolistic practices over certain trades set by merchants.
They virtually eliminated competition and ensured quality. Compared to Renaissance art, and
Shakespearean and Elizabethan literature the precursor saw little. However, works like Chaucer s
Canterbury Tales were popular, and the Gothic architectural style laid a foundation for many
cathedrals and buildings. It is still a dominant facade in today s world and was relished in modern
Western Europe. A powerful education system and study of art are necessary for society s to flourish
and carry it s roots into the next era;

How Technology Has Changed Modern Society
Today as individuals we have many privileges, rights, and freedoms that have not existed in the past.
In modern society, many things are handed to us where as in the traditional society people had to work
very hard and face many hurdles in order to do everyday tasks. The technology has changed
drastically from back then to now present year s new technology and devices are constantly being
created to make our lives easier. However in the traditional society people had only a few options of
ways to communicate with each other. Modern culture seems to be influenced a lot by social media
and whatever the new current trend is. Whereas traditional culture is more conservative followed by
morals and religious practices. Prices of housing living and food have all increased fairly in our
modern day society. Decades ago people did not have many expenses to account, for now, we have
daycares all kinds of insurance payments and tuition to try to afford. When you compare modern day
society with the way traditional society was you can see some major differences.
Technology has been around for many years and throughout those years it s advancing. Both modern
and traditional technology is viewed in different but our similar is some ways.Technology is the use of
tools and machine to get the job done. Modern technology is just an advanced version of the
traditional technology. For instance, the gadgets we use today like a smartphone is just an advanced
version of the mobile phone that

Would you make other people have their dignity restored? Do you have dignity in you?
Lies are one of the major things in which affects this world of wonders, the young and old do it even
you do it yourself. Everyone tells lies every now and then, but if people believe in every lie that is said
to them then they would forward those lies onto other people. When Mr Mendez sees the (freak) side
show and once he arrives at Will s section (which has curtains covering him); the things that the
showman said about Will is horrifying and is a lie. Will believed everything that the showman said;
the showman said God himself has turned his back on him and this next thing has been cursed since
birth . No one should be expressed like that. When someone is expressed like that it affects the victim
and the victor; they both get a bad influence on each other. How often do you tell lies? How often do
you tell the truth?
When you think that human dignity is already in this world but when you think about all of the bad
things which are happening you realise that people aren t being treated the way that they should be;
people lie (about how their thinking), they think that everything is impossible because of the lies, and
the people who are treated the way they should are hoping to make others happier and a difference to
this world. If people get treated equally then bad

Othello And The Laboratory, Porphyria s Lover And...
17/03/15 Controlled Assessment Explore the ways the writers present villains in Othello and The
Laboratory, Porphyria s lover and Education for Leisure In all four texts, the disruption of
relationships and villainy can be seen to be caused by characters struggling with personal insecurities,
evoking almost a sense of inner conflict. Browning explores the power struggle between men and
women while Shakespeare questions the way in which society imposes gender and racial identity.
Both Browning and Duffy consider the ways in which the controlling aspects of a relationship can
almost cause destructive love, extreme sexual jealousy and simple villainy even Iago states, He hath
done my office suggesting that, the green eyed monster may have struck another victim and created a
most evil man. Othello begins with a quarrel of sorts between Iago and Roderigo, and, as such, it
serves several functions. Its tone easily catches our interest, and it reveals Iago s true nature: he must
make amends to Roderigo for failing to arouse Desdemona s interest in him. After all, Iago intends to
keep a hand in the wealthy nobleman s pocket, which, Roderigo says belongs to Iago as if the strings
were thine. Iago apologizes profusely for failing Roderigo and claims that he never dreamed that such
an elopement might occur: If I ever did dream of such a matter, he says Abhor me. Exactly how long

The New England Patriots Played Against The Indianapolis...
Introduction
During the 2015 AFC Championship, the New England Patriots played against the Indianapolis Colts
on January 18th in the Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, MA. Prior to halftime, however, the Colts
brought suspicions of the Patriots having deflated their balls. They requested the pressures be checked
at halftime. Two referees, Blakeman and Prioleau, each measured the pressure of both the Patriots and
the Colts balls with separate gauges. The Officials came to the conclusion that all 11 of the patriots
balls were underinflated, the required pressure being between 27.2 28.2 pounds per square inch (psi).
Footballs from the colts were also being tested and appeared to be in the accepted range. This situation
was temporarily postponed so the game could continue. The balls were filled to regulation pressure
before restarting. The patriots went on to win 45 7.
Shortly after, the media began to question the cause of the footballs being deflated. Detractors came to
the conclusion they were merely deflated on purpose, while supporters thought they may have been
affected by the cold temperatures that day, which were in the high forties. This lead to the NFL hiring
the independent law firm, PWRWG, to further investigate.
PWRWG is a science law firm which was assigned to determine if the footballs could infact have been
affected by the weather alone. Using the universal gas law to solve for moles (n), it will be determined
if gas was released.

The Nature Of Colonial Rule
The nature of colonial rule in the Congo was that of brute force, greed, and a lust for power. The
scramble for Africa was one that was headed by the Europeans with small as well as larger countries
owning colonies in Africa. The Europeans saw great opportunities for colonization and with the idea
of colonization came power as well as wealth. For King Leopold II of Belgium, running an Empire
was everything he had wanted since he was young. Adam Hochschild, the author of King Leopold s
Ghost, writes that it may have been Leopold s lack of parenting that made his lust for power and
wealth so drastic.1 With failed attempts to buy the Philippines and other land masses from other
European countries, Leopold saw his only hope for his dream of an Empire in Africa. Leopold had
learned from his many attempts to buy a colony that none was for sale; he would have to conquer it. 2
He wanted a colony because he too wanted to gain profit from the natural resources the land would
provide as he saw in France s success with Northern Africa and England s success with South Africa.
Explorers talked of Africa as if it had no inhabitants and was just waiting to be filled by the cities and
railway lines constructed through the magic of European industry. 3 With Henry Stanley s expedition
and research of empty Africa, Leopold saw an opportunity to create an Empire. He acted as a
philanthropist in public with only a few of his closest people knowing about his true plans to colonize

Landmark techniques of axillary brachial plexus block: Perivascular Single Injection Technique The
patient lies supine, the arm was abducted about 90° and the elbow is flexed about 90° and externally
rotated. The axillary artery, which is usually palpated readily, acts as a landmark. The coracobrachialis
muscle runs cranial to the axillary artery. The palpating fingers find the gap between the axillary artery
and coracobrachialis somewhat distal to the axillary crease (Fig. 22). The injection site is located
where the lateral edge of pectoralis major crosses the axillary artery. The needle used for the block is

However, undetected venous puncture may occur if the venous lumen collapses during aspiration.
Intra arterial injection causes sudden hand paleness and paresthesia, which may stay few minutes.
Seizures, loss of consciousness, and cardiac arrest are the results of intravascular infusion of a large
LA dosage. Frequent needle aspiration during a slow injection is a must. Afterward arterial puncture,
haematoma might happen. A firm steady pressure must be applied over the puncture point for 5 10
min if the artery has been punctured. Symptoms of LA overdose show after 5 10 min of injection in
contrast to the accidental intravascular injection, in which symptomatic appear during or immediately
after the unintentional injection. The ordinary clinical picture is: dizziness, lightheadness, circum oral
paraesthesie, tunnel vision, brady alternately tachycardia, anxiousness which in the end progress to
loss of consciousness and seizures. Immediately oxygen should be supplied, a sedative/hypnotic
administered, and airway supported if necessary. (Koscielniak Nielsen,

The Hittite, Jewish, Phoenician, Persian, And Assyrians
The Hittite, Jewish, Phoenician, Persian, and Assyrians nations are all very important nations within
Mesopotamia. They share similar attributes but differ at the same time. The HIttites were one of the
great empires of the Middle East during 1400 1200 BC. THey rested within the lands of modern
Turkey and Syria. They adopted some of the traditions of Mesopotamia (i.e. cuneiform writing).
Widely known for their use and manufacturing of iron, the Hittites were also famous for their chariot
building. The Hittite empire soon fell to the Assyrians. The Jewish were led to Israel by one of their
patriarchs, Abraham, around 1950 B.C.E. Throughout time, the Israelites were captured numerous

Sone, they became expert sailors and grew wealthy from trade. The creation of the Phoenician
alphabet is one of the greatest accomplishments they achieved and was used by many other
civilizations. With the founding of Carthage and other colonies, the use of paryus before the Greeks is
a few of their other achievements. In 550 B.C.E. to 331 B.C.E. the Persian empire went from India all
the way to Europe. Cyrus the Great was one of Persia s kings. The geography limited trade with other
neighboring civilizations. Persia conquered Anatolia for the purpose of the use of their seaports for
trade. Cyrus son created the Persian satrap (governors). After unsuccessfully invading Greece, due to
the rebellions within the civilizations, Persia was conquered by Alexander the Great. The Assyrian
empire spans over modern day Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran. The rivers Tigris and Euphrates both ran
through the Assyrian empire which also contained rich and fertile land. The spoken languages they
used were Akkadian and Assyrian ( Assyrian Neo Aramaic) while writing with cuneiform. The
Assyrians participated in the religions Ashurism and Christianity. Assyrians were often militaristic and

The Scientific Revolution Essay
During the Scientific Revolution scientists such as Galileo, Copernicus, Descartes and Bacon wrestled
with questions about God, human aptitude, and the possibilities of understanding the world.
Eventually, the implications of the new scientific findings began to affect the way people thought and
behaved throughout Europe. Society began to question the authority of traditional knowledge about
the universe. This in turn, allowed them to question traditional views of the state and social order. No
longer was the world constructed as the somewhat simple Ptolemaic Model suggested. The Earth for
the first time became explicable and was no longer the center of the universe. Many beliefs that had
been held for hundreds of years now proved to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The statement acts to justify his finding with the church and connect them to God. Copernicus realized
that the church would be quick to judge him, and possibly this is why he didn t publish his theories
until late in his life. His discoveries were not so much as important as were his methods of observation
and application of mathematics to explain the world. His methods of discovery helped model the
direction of science over the next hundred years.
Another important figure in the Scientific Revolution was Galileo Galilei. He was an Italian born
professor of mathematics who had a great interest in the workings of the universe. Galileo served as a
professor at the University of Padua, and it was during this time that he began to question the accuracy
of the Churches representation of the world. Galileo s approach towards knowledge was much
different then the afore mentioned Copernicus. Where as Copernicus presented his finding to the
mercy of the church, Galileo wrote his conclusions and left the Roman Catholic Church interpret them
as they chose. The very nature of his findings pitted him as an opponent of the church.
The Earth was not the center of the universe. Galileo had seen far into the heavens with the telescope
he had designed and created an even more accurate mold of the universe. He trumpeted his views
everywhere, and condemned anyone who

Critical Concepts Of Middle Adulthood
There are many emotions that coincide with middle adulthood. Three of the most critical concepts of
middle adulthood are midlife crisis, empty nest syndrome, and sandwich generation. Each concept and
stage are apparent in many people around the age 42 45 and can last from 2 5 years. However, these
ages can fluctuate for various environmental reasons and circumstances. Also, this can have gender
and culture variations that can affect the age and longevity. A midlife crisis is the event that happens in

The sandwich generation is when an adult is not only taking care of their own children, but also their
parents. In many cultures such as Asian tradition taking care of your parents is required and a mark of
adulthood. The generation is typically between the ages of 30 and 55. This number is so widely raged
because many environmental circumstance depend upon it. People in this stage may become stressed,
depressed, and have a loss of identity. Also, people in this generation have to be very patient and
empathetic towards others to withstand the difficulties and responsibilities of being in a sandwich
generation situation. As life expectancy is increasing this is much more common. It is very common in
developing countries because families are financially dependent on each other and may even live in
the same household. Sandwich generations are becoming more common throughout all

An American Family
Mr. Cleaver comes home from a long day at work to his loving wife. He enjoys a nice home cooked
meal as he talks with his two children at the dinner table often about the troubles Beav has found his
way into in the sitcom Leave it to Beaver. A show that aired in the late 50 s teaching life lessons to its
viewers and most importantly representing the ideal nuclear family. Needless to say, we have come a
long way from the white picket fence and 2.5 children as the model representation of an American
family. Today, families are modeled in all different shapes and sizes. Two parent, single parent,
multiple parents, or even extended family members can be seen raising the children. These families
have developed over the past 60 years due to many reasons. The societal changes occurring over time
and economical effects on both micro and macro levels, and the evolution of gender roles along with
many other causes have all played a role in developing the family. By the 1990 s, the census reported
that only about 21% of married couples lived with their children. (Morgan 1996) In 40 years, the ideal
nuclear family had dropped to 21%, and due to the rise in divorce rates during the 80 s, the percentage
of stepchildren was projected to rise to 33%. (Morgan 1996) Now decades later, stepfamilies do
indeed make up 1/3 of American households. With the growing changes in families and the people that
make up families, many new concerns are being developed about the legal rights and

Slate Relief Palette Of King Narmer
1. The Egyptians were extremely religious, and their belief in life after death was an important part of
their culture. They believed that, in order for the spirit to live on, the dead person s body had to be
preserved, or mummified, and buried along with supplies of food and drink, tools and utensils, valued
possessions all the things the person had needed or enjoyed on earth. The higher the person s station in
life, the more extensive the preparations for the afterlife. Kings and other weathly persons had
elaborate tombs built. Sculptures and wall paintings in the tombs were also created for use in the next
life.
For more than 2000 years, egypt was one of the richest and most civilized lands in the ancient world.
Much of what we know about this great civilization has been learned from its art and architecture. In
particular, the ruins of tombs and temples have provided a valuable record of Egyptian life. ... Show

The slate relief Palette of King Narmer illustrates many formal and iconographic conventions
Egyptian artists employed for the next 2500 years; primary among these is the Egyptian preference for
descriptive rather than optical representation. The conventional figures offer a composite view of the
human body, with the ruler rigid and formal, while lesser humans display greater movement and a
variety of poses. The palette s narrative imagery is composed in registers without regard for three
dimensional space or setting. Hieroglyphic text explains the palette s subject, which ,unlike most
surviving Egyptian art, is commemorative but not funerary, most egyptian art and architecture was

Mistakes are normal. Everyone makes mistakes; there are no exceptions. Mistakes help us to evolve
and to grow both personally and professionally. We can learn from our mistakes, therefore allowing
continuous improvements. Mistakes are learning experiences that can drives innovations and
successes. The opportunity to make mistakes is crucial while learning because they allow us to
develop and grow. Mistakes help us to recognize what we did wrong, which allows to seek other
alternatives to rectify a problem. Our mistakes permit us to learn and acknowledge fault. By

Dyson thrives by the mistakes he makes as well as doubt from others. He is an innovator with a lot of
knowledge and drive. Dyson is a great candidate to mentor recent college graduates because he is the
epitome of never give up . He does not allow errors and mishaps to define him. He takes the
misfortunes and unfavorable decisions to propel him for greatness.
Dyson promotes creativity. I believe that he would recommend that students stay focused and learn
from their errors rather than quit their efforts. Dyson would advise to never allow your current
situation define your outcome. He would suggest that students learn from past experiences. He would
stress the importance of not focusing on the error itself, but how we recovered from it. James Dyson
encourages students that making error are accepted and expected. Innovation is the key to improving a
business. Innovation helps to find better ways of doing things to support business improvement and
growth. In my opinion, businesses could learn valuable information in regards to training from James
Dyson. Dyson would point out that sometimes hiring the experienced can lead to slow progress. It
may be difficult to train seasoned workers new or changed ideas because seasoned representatives are
used to the old policies and procedures. Training new fresher associates can be helpful because they
are eager to learn and they have a desire to do well. Fresher associates are willing to find better ways

Themes in Hamlet Essay
Themes in Hamlet
Within the Shakespearean tragic drama Hamlet there are a number of themes. Literary critics find it
difficult to agree on the ranking of the themes. This essay will present the themes as they are
illustrated in the play and let the reader prioritize them.
Michael Neill in None Can Escape Death, the Undiscovered Country interprets the main theme of the
play as a prolonged meditation on death :
How we respond to the ending of Hamlet both as revenge drama and as psychological study depends
in part on how we respond to [the most important underlying theme] of the play that is, to Hamlet as a
prolonged meditation on death. The play is virtually framed by two encounters with the dead: ... Show

What is the central, unifying action of Hamlet? Revenge. (43 44)
R.A. Foakes in The Play s Courtly Setting explains the burden of revenge which the protagonist must
carry for the duration of the play:
Perhaps the most terrible feature of his recognition of corruption everywhere is his recognition of it in
himself too; where others deceive he must deceive too, where others act he must put on an antic
disposition, where the inmost desires and passions of others must be revealed, so must his own
passions be roused. And where there is no legal punishment for his father s death, he must stoop,
driven by the universal wrong, and being thus be netted round with villainies , to revenge. He must
share the corruption of others in spite of his nobility, and recognize in himself the common features,
we are arrant knaves all. (53)
Marchette Chute in The Story Told in Hamlet describes the opening scene of the drama, which
introduces the theme of supernatural influence on the present:
The story opens in the cold and dark of a winter night in Denmark, while the guard is being changed
on the battlements of the royal castle of Elsinore. For two nights in succession, just as the bell strikes
the hour of one, a ghost has appeared on the battlements, a figure dressed in complete armor and with
a face like that of the dead king of Denmark, Hamlet s

My Brother Isaiah Thomas And The Stages Of Moral...
What is a theory? Well, a theory is an assumption or accepted facts that provides logical and rational
explanation to a cause and effect relationships among a group being observed (Theory). In other
words, a reason or thought that someone has created a response to a topic but, it can t be proven or
disprove. Included in this paper is a discussion about three theorist Piaget, Vygotsky, and Kohlberg
along with their beliefs. I have chosen my brother Isaiah Thomas to compare and contrast the theories
of the known theorist. The theories I chose to talk about are cognitive theory stages of development by
Piaget, sociocultural theory by Vygotsky, and the stages of moral development by Kohlberg.
Biography The person I chose to write about was my brother Isaiah Thomas. He is fifteen year old
African American male about 6 foot 1. He has white teeth with a smile that will light up the room,
black hair and brown eyes. He was born in Pinehurst, North Carolina about thirty minutes away from
a little town called Troy, North Carolina. He grew up with our mother and his father. Our mother was
a sixth grade English teacher and his father was a teacher as well as a high school head football coach.
At age seven he was up rooted and moved to Rocky Mount, North Carolina where he attended
Benvenue Elementary, Edwards Middle School, and now for high school Rocky Mount Academy.

realize what needs to be accomplished. In the performing stage, team members are well organized and

PART III Retrospective Evaluation
In order for Christine to solve her primary problem two things need to occur. First, Christine should
take a class in organization behavior. Understanding the team development process, as well as, team
effectiveness, and teams in an organization will definitely help Christine. She will be able to
understand, and identify positive and negative aspects of her project team and would have been able to
implement steps to correct any deficiencies.
The second aspect was Christine s lack of effectiveness and her inability to integrate Mike into the
team. After the first meeting which Mike attended, the problems started. Mike did not make meeting,
and was submitting hand written notes. Christine should have structured a meeting that Mike could
attend, or scheduled a team building social event. in addition, she could have started reviewing his
notes with the other team members at the meetings since he was not there to do it himself. This would
at least have given the other team members the knowledge that Mike was making an effort on his part
of the project.
PART IV Reflection
In my opinion Christine was presented with a challenge that was way above her level of experience.
Her lack of knowledge in team development, and as a team leader was evident in the project team. The
team did not make it past the storming phase, and therefore never fully developed into an efficient
team. She failed to integrate one individual into the

Perks Of Being A Wallflower Charlie Essay
The character Charlie in Stephen Chbosky s Perks of Being a Wallflower is an interesting one. Charlie
is influenced by many people, and the plot is driven by his inner turmoil as a wallflower . One of his
greatest influences is from his Aunt Helen. Chbosky is able to paint a strong picture by using Aunt
Helen, even though she does not appear in his story at all. She can easily be credited as an underlying
drive for the book s plot. When Aunt Helen was younger, she was molested by a friend of the family.
She suffered through many trials throughout her life, but her experiences with this man affected her
the greatest. It is assumed (from scenes later on in the book) that she might ve even molested Charlie
when he was younger. She abuses his quiet demeanor, and Charlie does not remember this at all. She

Chbosky used the character of Helen quite intricately. It is rare that a character has such strong
influences from something if it is not actually there, even though this is a fairly common thing in our

character. We watch him slowly spiral down, and he knows that it is not healthy to think the way he s
thinking. Saying things like, Something s really wrong with me. And I don t know what it is. (137)
throughout the story, getting more and more concentrated towards the end. Charlie engages in spirals
of thought, often leading in him to abandon some letters, I have to stop doing this, I am getting to sad.
(168) and his negative character development begins to be the driving plotline of this story. His life is

(Paglia p.11) The epigraph to this novel is from The Ancient People and the Newly Come : The body repeats the landscape. They are the source of each other and create each other. We were marked by the seasonal body of earth, by the terrible migrations of people, by the swift turn of a century, verging on change never before experienced on this greening planet. All of it comes back to the double edged sword of patriarchy and capitalist industrial farming, embodied by Larry. Ginny and Rose are trying to figure out how to understand him better. I [that is, Ginny] feel like there s treacherous undercurrents all the time. I think I m standing on solid ground, but then I discover that there s something moving underneath it, shifting from place to place. There s always some mystery. He doesn t say what he means. (104). From Larry, it spreads to all the other characters, like Ginny and Ty: We had spent our life together practicing courtesy, putting the best face on things, harboring secrets. (260) In the end, nobody can be trusted, the poison influences everbody. Pete s death is a tragic enactment of this metaphor. He was always silently angry, trying to find some way to rebel against Larry, but losing himself more and more bitterly in contemplating the target. (306) It is only by way of metaphorizing the quarry that he can break the surface. Talking about the waterfilled quarry and throwing stones in, he says: You hate to see that surface go unbroken. (249). Then he contemplates the only way out: Pete stared past me. A breeze had come up, shattering the surface of the water into shards of light. (251). Later that summer, he takes it: he ... • 9. Essay on The Presidency of Gerald R. Ford The Presidency of Gerald R. Ford Gerald R. Ford was the 38th President of the United States, after gaining the position through extraordinary circumstances. His good will and friendly demeanor helped him climb the political ladder higher than even he had anticipated. His career in politics began with his law firm, yet ended up in the oval office. While his presidency was short lived, it is remembered due to numerous crucial decisions he had to make. After graduating from Yale with a law degree in 1941, Gerald R. Ford returned to his home town of Grand Rapids Michigan to start a law firm with his friend Phillip Buchen. He also became active in local politics. As a matter of fact, his route to the presidency was more circumstantial than intentional. In 1973, Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned from office due to a kick back scandal ( Gerald R. Ford Timeline 3). President Richard Nixon then decided to select Ford as the new vice president, knowing that Ford s reputation in Congress would make him the only candidate both houses and parties would accept. As the vice president, Ford was not very active. Even more so, he intentionally chose to stay out of the way; perhaps because he did not want to be associated with the actions and policies of the Nixon administration. Next, as is popular knowledge, President Nixon resigned after the Watergate scandal came to light, leaving Ford to become the President. Gerald R. Ford was sworn in on August 9, 1974, as the United State s 38th president. In his inauguration speech, Ford was open about the bizarre circumstances that led to him holding the position. He acknowledged to the people that he was not chosen by them for the job as President. He continues to say, If you have not chosen me by secret ballot, neither have I gained office by any secret promises. I have not campaigned either for the Presidency or the Vice Presidency. I have not subscribed to any partisan platform. He spoke these words to show the public who were skeptical of all politicians after the Watergate scandal that he could be trusted. He knew without ... Embedded in its history are the many eras of man which have constructed our modern learning, art, beliefs, and order. The middle ages, although represented as dark , backwards, and idle, were in fact a bridge linking the classical and modern world. Medieval society may not have been in a sense glorious, but the era of itself was a prime foundation of the modern world s newfound stability, a revival of the law and teachings from the classical era, a reinvestment and reform in the church, and a precursor to the golden age of art. AS revolutionary as the transition was to the feudal system, the practice proved to be efficient in the modern world. The influence of universities and merchants, as seen, changed the kingdom. Medieval universities were first formed in the 12th century AD after a need for educated public officials became evident. Schools like the Law School at Bologna as well as medical schools gave towns lawyers, judges and capable local officials. Other schools like the University of Paris taught scholars literature and theology. The breed of Renaissance thinking was most likely developed in such places. Scholars like Peter Abelard and Thomas Aquinas led an interest in the study of classical Greek and Roman philosophy. This interest, along with challenged perspectives of the time eventually led to modern science. Guilds, as afore mentioned, were monopolistic practices over certain trades set by merchants. They virtually eliminated competition and ensured quality. Compared to Renaissance art, and Shakespearean and Elizabethan literature the precursor saw little. However, works like Chaucer s Canterbury Tales were popular, and the Gothic architectural style laid a foundation for many cathedrals and buildings. Through these experiences my perspective about hard work and perseverance has changed dramatically, and for that I am thankful. My dad was diagnosed with cancer about 5 years ago. I was in middle school so I knew enough to understand that it was a very serious and scary thing which not all people can defeat. I had a very frightening realization that he could die and I might only have a limited time left with him. When he started to receive the chemotherapy treatments I knew that I had to step up and help out. This taught me that I had to get things done and I couldn t procrastinate. Othello And The Laboratory, Porphyria s Lover And... 17/03/15 Controlled Assessment Explore the ways the writers present villains in Othello and The Laboratory, Porphyria s lover and Education for Leisure In all four texts, the disruption of relationships and villainy can be seen to be caused by characters struggling with personal insecurities, evoking almost a sense of inner conflict. Browning explores the power struggle between men and women while Shakespeare questions the way in which society imposes gender and racial identity. Both Browning and Duffy consider the ways in which the controlling aspects of a relationship can almost cause destructive love, extreme sexual jealousy and simple villainy even Iago states, He hath done my office suggesting that, the green eyed monster may have struck another victim and created a most evil man. Othello begins with a quarrel of sorts between Iago and Roderigo, and, as such, it serves several functions. Its tone easily catches our interest, and it reveals Iago s true nature: he must make amends to Roderigo for failing to arouse Desdemona s interest in him. After all, Iago intends to keep a hand in the wealthy nobleman s pocket, which, Roderigo says belongs to Iago as if the strings were thine. Introduction During the 2015 AFC Championship, the New England Patriots played against the Indianapolis Colts on January 18th in the Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, MA. Prior to halftime, however, the Colts brought suspicions of the Patriots having deflated their balls. They requested the pressures be checked at halftime. Two referees, Blakeman and Prioleau, each measured the pressure of both the Patriots and the Colts balls with separate gauges. The Officials came to the conclusion that all 11 of the patriots balls were underinflated, the required pressure being between 27.2 28.2 pounds per square inch (psi). Footballs from the colts were also being tested and appeared to be in the accepted range. This situation was temporarily postponed so the game could continue. The balls were filled to regulation pressure before restarting. The patriots went on to win 45 7. Shortly after, the media began to question the cause of the footballs being deflated. Detractors came to the conclusion they were merely deflated on purpose, while supporters thought they may have been affected by the cold temperatures that day, which were in the high forties. This lead to the NFL hiring the independent law firm, PWRWG, to further investigate. The scramble for Africa was one that was headed by the Europeans with small as well as larger countries owning colonies in Africa. The Europeans saw great opportunities for colonization and with the idea of colonization came power as well as wealth. For King Leopold II of Belgium, running an Empire was everything he had wanted since he was young. Adam Hochschild, the author of King Leopold s Ghost, writes that it may have been Leopold s lack of parenting that made his lust for power and wealth so drastic.1 With failed attempts to buy the Philippines and other land masses from other European countries, Leopold saw his only hope for his dream of an Empire in Africa. Leopold had learned from his many attempts to buy a colony that none was for sale; he would have to conquer it. 2 He wanted a colony because he too wanted to gain profit from the natural resources the land would provide as he saw in France s success with Northern Africa and England s success with South Africa. Explorers talked of Africa as if it had no inhabitants and was just waiting to be filled by the cities and railway lines constructed through the magic of European industry. 3 With Henry Stanley s expedition and research of empty Africa, Leopold saw an opportunity to create an Empire.
