Mass media are diversified technologies intended to reach large number of people by mass
communication. These technologies transmit their information electronically and may include
broadcast media such as television, radio, recorded music and film. On the other hand, Social media
refer to web based technologies that provide platform for individuals and community to share,
exchange information, ideas, and pictures /videos in virtual communities e.g. Facebook and twitter.
American Political System is highly dependent on Mass Media since the development of media began
a century ago through the development of first successful newspaper ( Boston News Letter). This was
the beginning of an inevitable development in global communication or mass media. Since then, other
media friendly devices have cemented their spot in the industry such as the television, the radio, cell
phones and social media. It is with these tools, protected by the first amendment, that people peek into
what is going on in the world around us, from business to welfare, from sports to political events. If
we take a closer look at the political world in America, We clearly identify how powerful the media
can be, this raises questions on the power of media and its manipulations as a tool of campaign, for
instance the recent presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton .This paper also touches on the various
ways that the media can influence politics both foreign and domestic and how it is used by political

The Scarlet Ibis Comparison
In the short story The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, Hurst illustrates the struggle of one boy with his
disability and his and his brothers expectations. The narrator, Brother, tells the story of Doodle, his
brother, and his childhood with all his disabilities; starting off by telling about Doodle when he was a
baby and toddler, about how he could not do much for himself for a long time, but eventually learns to
crawl. He soon moves onto when Doodle got a little older and Brother would have to take him
everywhere he went and how the two would take on the mission of teaching Doodle to walk; they
spent almost everyday out in the woods making Doodle stronger and stronger. On Doodle s sixth
birthday, they showed the family what he could do;

Analysis Of Starry Night
Tittle of the work: Starry night
The Artist: Vincent Van Gogh
Medium: Oil Support
Height :73.70 cm
Length :92.10 cm
Date of the art work: 1889 Art piece 1 Starry Night
The night sky portrayed by van Gogh in the Starry Night painting is overflowing with spinning mists,
sparkling stars, and a splendid bow moon. The setting is one that watchers can identify with and van
Gogh s whirling sky coordinates the watcher s eye around the sketch, with dispersing between the
stars and the bending forms making a dab to dab impact. These inner components guarantee ease and

The craftsman conveyed the Mona Lisa with him until he kicked the bucket and was unmistakably
mindful of its criticalness.
After the artistic creation was delivered there were questions raised about the character of the sitter.
While a great many people concurred that it was Mona Lisa Gherardini, the spouse of Francesco del
Giocondo, a Florentine silk vendor, many individuals proposed it was, indeed, a self representation,
and the facial highlights take after a later self picture by Leonardo.
Mona Lisa is wearing plain clothing which is particularly not quite the same as different ensembles
painted at the time. She wears an abnormally dark, basic dress with a creased bodice, with gold
weaving. The dress has a low neck area that uncovered her chest. She is not wearing any adornments
and a scarf dangles from her left shoulder. There is a cover hanging over her marginally muddled hair,
accepted to be a grieving shroud.
The fine dull cloak that spreads Mona Lisa s hair is frequently accepted to be a grieving cover, a bit of
apparel worn to symbolize social position. However, the subject s dress is fairly basic and standard
and neither her outfit nor the scarf around her neck demonstrates her highborn standing.
In 1911 the Mona Lisa was

Before the last several months, the Roanoke Branch of Phoenix has been a vital part of the Phoenix
Advertising family. In an attempt to increase profitability, the branch recently instituted its own
policies regarding overtime and compensation. However, a lack of employee morale and a decline in

of the web browsers that are used throughout the world. These web browsers have become even more

they need to get done. The beginning of this profitable and popular invention all started back in 1990.
Internet browsers have been around for the last 23 years. The first browser to be invented in 1990 was

The wider range of devices has made it easily accessible to access the internet. With more devices
having the ability to access the internet, web browser companies were making it their target to make
sure that their browser was the one being used. They would pay other technology companies to put
their web browser on their devices. For example, Xbox 360 uses Bing as their main web browser and
iPhone uses safari as their main browser. One of the main uses that people around the world use web
browsers is to go on social networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, etc. Social
networking sites make it easy for people to be able to see what their friends and family have going on
in their lives and it also makes it easy for them to keep in touch with loved ones.
With cell phones and electronics becoming even more popular, there are more people using social
media networks. According to the article, We Spent 230,060 Years on Social Media in One Month
written by Helen A.S. Popkin on NBC News, it states, Facebook indeed, several times over, is the
most popular social network in the U.S., with 152.2 million visitors on personal computers, 78.4
million users via mobile apps, and 74.3 million visitors via the mobile Web. (Popkin). This shows that
with technology and electronics evolving there are even more people accessing web browsers
throughout the world every day and social media networks are a big factor to why people go on and

USS Midway Museum
USS Midway Museum
On September 24, 2016 I had the privilege of visiting the USS Midway Historical Museum. My friend
Michelle, who is also a CBU student, accompanied me while we explored this fantastic site. I was
recommended to tour the USS Midway by my German foreign exchange student who was able to visit
the attraction a couple weeks earlier. Niels emphasized how much he enjoyed his visit and explained
that it was a shame that I had not been there earlier, due to the fact that I live so close to San Diego. It
was Niel s advice, paired with my prior interest in the history of this battleship that inspired me to
finally see it for myself.
Michelle and I arrived on a beautiful San Diego day at North Harbor Drive near the Coronado
Broadway Pier. We parked somewhat far away because it was a busy day on the harbor. Walking
towards the ship, we witnessed street performers doing all sorts of entertaining things that created a
fun atmosphere. Some were blowing up balloons for kids, while others were playing their instruments,
filling the air with a sweet melody. Walking along this beautiful parkway, looking out at the blue
waters crashing against the docks, I could not help but realize how blessed and grateful I am to be free
in such a great nation.
The first attraction I saw was a huge granite monument just across the street from the Midway. It
honored the second most decorated ship in WWII, known as the USS San Diego CL 53. This ship was
a tiny cruiser that had tremendous

The Importance Of The Ancient Greek Olympic Games
The Importance of the Olympic Games
Naked men running around competing against each other was once a common thing in the Olympics.
Even though it sounds pretty gross, it was a true thing that happened in ancient times. The ancient
Greek Olympics, although very long ago, have had a lasting effect on our society today. According to
World History teacher Laron Johnson, the Greek Empire started in 8th Century BC. The Greeks have
always valued competition; they constantly fought with each other as well as working together to fight
against other peoples (Johnson). They have given us a lot of our modern things. Thus, the ancient
Greek Olympics have had an impact on our modern society in global unity, sporting events, and our
obsession with sports.
The Olympics have always been a way to bring people together. Even when the city states were
fighting each other, they put aside their differences and competed peacefully. Mark Cartwright states,
The Games started with a procession which went from the host town of Elis to Olympia...and on
arrival at Olympia all athletes and officials swore an oath to follow the established rules of the
competitions and to compete with honour and respect (Cartwright). Basically, the athletes were
promoting unity among the city states by swearing to uphold their oath of truce during the games. This
unity has come into our modern games when athletes from warring countries can enjoy one another s
company, even if their countries hate each other. According to the author of the website International

How Did The Spanish American War Affect The Philippines
The Spanish American War was a four month conflict between the United States and Spain provoked
by many things. Spain, at the time, was controlling Cuba. In 1895, Jose Marti and the inserrectos1
revolted against Spanish rule, leading to General Valeriano Weyler to become the governor of Cuba.
General Weyler was harsh with the rebels and non rebels alike and put much of the Cuban population
in concentration camps, where the many Cubans died from starvation and disease. Americans felt very
sympathetic for the Cubans and the way they were being treated, especially because of yellow
journalism . Yellow journalism exaggerated the way the Spanish were treating the Cubans and
deepened many Americans hatred for the Spanish. Joseph Pulitzer, owner of the New York World, and

giving the Philippines to France ore Germany would be bad business since they were our commercial

what is happening to the company that a leader fails. Pivotal to the success of a leader is
communication, a human skill that is required at all levels of management.
In the process of being a leader, Kinneeveauk emphasized the importance of not losing oneself, of
being you, being comfortable with your skin. A large number of leaders have no idea who they are;
they recognize what they are and live according to the expectation of their position. To him, 50% to
60% of being a leader is recognizing who you are and not living to the expectations of the job.
Knowing who you are and becoming who you are as a leader [and learning over time the what of the

Humility of a leader towards one s own views, a trait of a spiritual leader, is another thing that
Kinneeveauk believes and practices. Leaders can never make their own views the norm of the group,

What do we mean? Look at the words independent of the definition, and consider how each person
creates his or her own ethical boundaries. Besides, moral principles were clearly differing from person
to person; wars are predicated on these notions. For the philosophy it is a belief system or theory.
Right and wrong about anyone with an opinion can attest to the disparities between two or more
people in this arena.
In term of motives, one person might differ from circumstance to circumstance. The Consequences are
often based on a fear of negative ramifications established through ones religious or philosophical
beliefs and/or the norms, mores and rules of one s community. So, from where we stand, it s a very

achieve and the path our lives take. The shapes of our view of ethics are from everything. Our
experiences (or lack of), peers, religious beliefs, edicts from a power we deem higher than ourselves.
For example, international law or a Supreme Consciousness which people to whom we are exposed,
for better or worse, and our decision to seek out models of ethical behaviour are all examples of how
we shape our ethical portfolios.

An Indian Crisis
An Indian Crisis Homo sapien sapiens are a breed unlike any other. These beings create complex
tools, produce diverse languages, and develop the ability to laugh and smile in the womb (What
Makes Us Human? 208). Although they lack the scaly defenses of reptiles and the sheer size of the
dinosaurs which came before them, humans have survived for over two hundred thousand years
(Howell 1). The reason they were able to survive stems largely from their evolved forms of
communication and tools which elevated them to the top of the food chain. The only predator to the
human became other humans. This became increasingly apparent after World War II and arguably the
largest crime against humanity, the Holocaust. Humans created a set of rules to ... Show more content

Humans massacred fellow humans. In an effort to prevent a crime on such a scale ever again a group
known as the United Nations created a document, Universal Declaration of Human Rights . The rights
set forth in this document attempt to protect all human beings. This declaration has provided a basis
for what is ethical treatment of humans. All humans use these rights to determine if a person or group
of persons is being mistreated. Among the first, and most basic, rights is the right to life, in which all
people are given the right to live and not have the opportunity seized from them ( Universal
Declaration of Human Rights 11). Despite this being a normality in our culture, in India females are
being killed solely based on their gender.
In India it is a societal normality to routinely kill newborn daughters by drowning them, suffocating
them, or neglecting to feed them (It s a Girl). One mother states in an interview that she has killed
eight daughters in this manner (It s a Girl). Despite being more apt to survive in an environment when
given equal resources as a male child, the female survival rate is rapidly declining in India (Srinivasan

(Female Infanticide 46 47). Women are not expected, or often times allowed, to work in

Theory of Behaviour Change Theories of behavioural change are used during program planning
because they help explain and predict how individuals go through change. Understanding how and
why people change is useful in the selection of program activities and outcomes (Hodges Videto,

it is quite different from the program we have planned. This study does describe the participants, and

between this study and our program plan it is important to see that other people have used aspects of
Social Cognitive Theory in a program/intervention that dealt with cannabis. This encourages the use
of aspects of the theory that are relevant to guide us in our own program

In this illusion the lines in both A and B are the same length however the arrows pointing inwards in A
make the line appear longer than when the arrows point outwards as in B. Gregory explained this
illusion in 1970 by suggesting that the lines are perceived as being three dimensional rather than two
dimensional. This is shown in figure 2 where A is shown as the inside of the room and B shown as the
outside. By perceiving the objects in this way A becomes further away than B. However given that the
lines are of the same size by applying the principle of size constancy it can be concluded that A is
perceived as being longer than B. For this to be perceived knowledge about what the outside and
inside of a building looks like must be taken into account. This therefore shows how prior knowledge
is used when the image is perceived and so shows how the Muller Lyer illusion is perceived through
top down processing.
Similarly the  Necker Cube illusion (figure 3) can also be explained through top down processing.
In this illusion the cube flips between two different interpretations of the picture whereby one of the
faces of the cube can appear to be at the front of the cube but also can appear to be at the back of the
cube. Work carried out by Wheatstone

Questions On World Philosophy By Plato, Maria...
World Philosophy Paper
Mikala: I ask you this, what is Knowledge?
Plato: Knowledge is Virtue.
Maria Montessori: Knowledge is what we observe.
John Dewey: Knowledge is the active adaptation of a person based on their environment. This is an
example of the Socratic dialog laid out by Plato. Plato was a philosopher and educator whom believed
that education was the key to society. As a student, I realize how my education was impacted by
philosophers such a Plato, Montessori, and Dewey. As a future teacher, it is my responsibility to
decide which philosophies of education I believe and which methods I would use to impact my
students. For this reason, I am going to explore three different types of philosophy as presented by
Plato, Maria ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a teacher, I would implement Plato s strategies by using the Socratic teaching method as illustrated
above. Leonard Nelson writes in The Socratic Method that this method of teaching focusses on giving
students questions rather than answers, thereby allowing the students to interact and seek truth. For
this reason, the student becomes the center of education, and the teacher becomes the facilitator of
information. This is why Plato writes in Meno that knowledge will not come from teaching, but it will
come from questioning (Thompson). I enjoyed the Socratic seminars in high a school because it
allowed me as a student to search for answers to the given question, and I had immediate feedback
from my peers. As a teacher, I would like to use this method occasionally because I value critical
thinking rather than passively receiving information.
Realism maintains an objective order of reality in which we gain knowledge from that reality. Many
teachers value and use this philosophy of education in their classrooms today. Perhaps one of the most
influential catalyst for realism in the classroom is Dr. Maria Montessori. Montessori believed that each
child is a worthy individual that is tasked with the duty to develop themselves into mature adults. One
of her main ideas is that learning should occur naturally and at the right time for each child,
advocating, it is true we

Incident Background On September 24, 2010, a laptop was stolen from an unlocked Urology office at
the Henry Ford Health Systems hospital. The laptop did contain password protection software;
however, it may not have been enough to permit access if the thief had advanced knowledge in
computers. Additionally, the information stored on the laptop did not include social security or health
insurance information, but instead held patient names, medical record numbers, dates of birth,
telephone numbers, e mail addresses, and treatment and doctor visits (Moscaritolo, 2010, p. 1). It is
unknown how many records were contained on the laptop, but all records were related to prostate
services that were provided during an eleven year span.
Reaction to Incident Once it was revealed that the laptop was missing, Meredith Phillips, the chief

Family Is Family
Family is the most important thing in the world.
This famous quote by princess Diana always clicks into my mind when I hear the word family..
Families do have to face quarrels and struggles in life but the most important thing is that they have to
face it with full strength and patience. These deep relationships carry lots of baggage and hurt as well.
All the people in this world have to face complexities and conundrums of familial love . It once
happened with me too . Sometimes these problem get into such big issues but sometimes people get
over it because of the close and inseparable bond that exists. No matter what happens between them ,
the people in a family never drift apart. I sometimes wonder that there are some lucky people who are

This essay will look at reflection on a critical incident that has promoted a positive outcome. It is not a
very major incident but it stands out as it has a potential for learning. This essay will identify and

necessary and how it can be used. Schone (1983) recommended reflection on critical incidence as a

The Pullman Strike Of 1894
The Pullman Strike of 1894 On May 11th, 1894, one of the most violent labor strikes in American
history took place in Pullman, Illinois. This labor strike, initiated by the American Railway Union
(ARU) and led by Eugene Debs against the extremely wealthy and powerful George Pullman and his
company, the Pullman Palace Car Company. This strike became a turning point in the national battle
regarding U.S. labor laws, and was instrumental in the regulation of corporations by the government.
The event that would eventually give birth to Labor Day took months of riots, struggles, and
ultimately, violence. It showed America how important the lives and wellbeing of American workers
was, and helped the nation recognize the rights that employees ... Show more content on

After gaining more fame and wealth, he started a family, and then created his own town. He passed
away in 1897 after suffering a heart attack, and his memory lives forever in history books as the man
responsible for the greatest and most far reaching of any strike on record in this country, (11
Carwardine). Pullman was known in his town as many things; powerful, intelligent, innovative but he
was also considered to be a terrible person. He was praised for creating a vast productive industry and
the creation of the Pullman Palace Car idea. However, as Carwardine recalls, the very qualities that
made him [Pullman] successful in life, have, untempered with nobler elements, placed him in his
predicament with the American public. Determination and resolution have turned into arrogance and
obstinacy, (28 Carwardine). He was an arrogant man, and if his attitude was different, perhaps the
Strike of the 1890s could have been prevented. The Pullman Strike happened in what s considered a
perfect storm, where all the circumstances kept aggravating the situation. A major part of this storm
was the Panic of 1893, an economic depression that lasted from 1893 to 1897. It began after the
failure of two of the nation s major employers, the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad and the
National Cordage Companies. Suddenly banks, steel mills, and railroads started going bankrupt. An

Vagueness In Dracula
TO BELONG OR NOT TO BELONG
Throughout the gothic history, the vagueness between the outside and inside has existed permanently,
which is considered as one of the main features of gothic novels. According to this, the development
of the differentiation between outside and inside has encountered two periods, using vampire gothic
novels as examples. Firstly, using the novel Dracula , Count Dracula is defined as the outside , which
still mirrors some human tendency and instinct. Secondly, using Interview with the vampire , the
introspective vampire like Louis is considered as the inside , which symbolizes modern consciousness
however lacking in the outside . Ultimately the outside can be transformed to the deeper ... Show more

For instance, Dracula satisfies its needs for food and sexual intercourse simultaneously, which
corresponds with the vampire s survival instinct. Similarly, human beings also have such kinds of
needs for self preservation, yet we separate the needs for sexuality and eating individually. In addition,
Dracula has to marry outside for reproduction due to a physical barrier, which is also reflected in the
human being s instinctive desire for foreign women. However, the imperialism of Dracula, reflecting
the Outside aspects of Dracula is still observable. Dracula serves as a superior figure who possesses
tremendous seduction power to the women who originally belongs to the good men s group and turns
them into the opposite of their original group. The statement of Mina Leagued with your enemy
against you. (Stocker 337) quite voices the anxiety and fear of the good men s group. Also, the image
of the women after being transformed into vampires encounters an entire change. The purity of
women is forever lost and instead they turn voluptuous and demanding and thus become otherness,
which deepens the fears of losing masculinity of the Good men s group. With all the fears ascribing to
the superior potency of Dracula,

The Polished Hoe Analysis
The Polished Hoe, a novel written by Austin Clarke, is revealed throughout a single Sunday nightfall
and ceases at the beginning of sunrise; it starts in obscurity so to speak and finishes in the light. The
story is conveyed primarily through the conversation and interaction between the two characters:
Mary Mathilda, the protagonist, and Percy Stuart, known to all as Sarge, as well as through flashbacks
occurring in their minds when the conversation lulls. This interaction occurs shortly after Mary
Mathilda kills Mr. Bellfeels, her lover since she was thirteen and father of her son Wilberforce, a
doctor of tropical medicine. Mr. Bellfeels, the manager of Flagstaff plantation and the antagonist of
the story, is omnipresent, if only because much of the conversation is about him; moreover, even if
both characters know that he is dead, the conditioned fear his brutal, tyrannical acts have instilled in
Sarge and Mary Mathilda inhibit for a very long time their interaction over the course of the evening.
The recurring motif, abuse of power, is illustrated in the entirety of the novel through Mary Mathilda s
traumatizing experiences, the plutocrats iron grip over their laborers, and the unbalanced education
system. To begin with, Mary Mathilda s motive for the killing is clearly stated in the following
excerpt: Mr. Bellfeels took her [Mary Matilda] as his right, in his natural arrogance of ownership . . .
If it wasn t you, Mary girl Ma told her, it would be somebody else s

The Yellow Wallpaper, By Perkins Gilman
Perkins Gilman aptly used narrative voice to shape the meaning of The Yellow Wallpaper, by writing a
first person narrative about a woman who slowly loses herself to madness. This voice is one of a
woman who may possibly have post partum depression or some other form of manic depression, and
her unheard cries for help. She slowly draws within herself, and allows the insanity to take over.
Within the first few paragraphs we learn general characteristics about the narrator: she is middle class,
as indicated by the phrase mere ordinary people (354); we also learn that she is married, suggested a
statement about John laughing at her, something she says is only expected in marriage. Though we are
never given her name, these generic aspects ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Early on, she openly admits that she may be ill, which quickly lends some reason to doubt when it
comes to some of the things she talks about. Are there really women hiding behind the wallpaper?
Surely not. Is there a woman lurking in the bushes outside? Unlikely. Are the patterns and shapes on
the wallpaper interesting and thought provoking? Probably so. That is all she thought of the wallpaper
when first confined to the room yellowish in color, with strange shapes woven into the texture.
However, as her condition worsens, the way she looks at the wallpaper grows more and more
distorted. The textures and strokes take shape and form; they turn into living beings, women who are
confined between the layers of wallpaper. The narrator begins to feel sympathetic for them, feeling
trapped and confined as well. The narrative slowly shifts from first to second person, with the
inclusion of a you. Instead of simply describing her feelings, she then begins to say this is how such a
thing would make you feel.
The narrator s descriptions of the room itself change with each entry. At first, it is merely irritating.
She describes the color as repellent, almost revolting; a smouldering unclean yellow, strangely faded
by the slow turning light (356). Any reliable, sane person would be irritated by an ugly yellow on their
walls. By the second entry, she admits she has a growing fondness for the room, aside from the
wallpaper. She starts to pick out

1984 Love And Hate Quotes
Winston s emotions of love and hate are interchangeable and have no stable target because the Party is
able to control the exact moments in which these emotion are expressed; by torturing Winston and
forcing him to leave his emotions vulnerable, the Party is able to fully control the target of Winston s
emotions and make them authentic.
Emotions, especially hatred, become chaotic and unclear when the Party members are able to reveal
them. During the Two Minutes Hate while he is staring at Goldstein s face on the screen, Orwell
writes: Suddenly, by the sort of violent effort with which one wrenches one s head away from the
pillow in a nightmare, Winston succeeded in transferring his hatred from the face on the screen to the
dark haired girl behind him (15). Wrenches conveys how Winston is able to quickly transfer his hate
from Goldstein to the girl behind him, demonstrating how little the recipient of hatred matters. The
feeling of hate is so strong that the target has no importance, as long as the hatred is expressed. The
phrase violent effort highlights the feeling of urgency to release emotion during the Two Minutes
Hate. Any outward expression of emotion is condemned in the society, therefore the feeling of hatred
becomes uncontrollable and frantic. Winston ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

said. I wanted to rape you and then murder you afterwards. Two weeks ago I thought seriously of

seriously thought of killing her. The hatred feels even more real because not only did he want to
murder her, he also wanted to rape and degrade her. The hate is graphic and raw which makes it feel
real, but his feelings change so quickly to love that the authenticity of these feelings are

The Crucial Role of Native Americans Essays
For the better part of American history, the Indians have been viewed and portrayed as dimwitted,
helpless victims that aimlessly stood by while the Europeans conquered their land, but this view has
recently come under fire and has been overturned, as it was determined to be misleading and
inaccurate. Two historians that have questioned the legitimacy of past beliefs regarding the Indians are
Charles Mann and James Axtell. Each has made it plainly clear in their articles that the actions of
Indians should no longer be treated as useless footnotes on the pages of history. While their articles are
on seemingly different subjects, their views and beliefs on the importance of Indians in American
history are incontrovertibly the same as both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tisquantum was using the oblivious Europeans for his own means, and although he never achieved his
goals, it is worth pointing out that he had ulterior motives for aiding the Pilgrims in their time of need.
Mann does a good job of supporting his opinion and showing that Indians were not just aloof and
passive but conniving and manipulative like their European counterparts. Unfortunately, in the end all
the planning and trickery in the world couldn t have saved the Indians as they were just simply
outnumbered and technologically inferior to the Europeans. James Axtell wrote the article entitled,
Colonial America Without the Indians and it goes into extreme detail to pinpoint the impact that the
Indians had on American history. Axtell picks out important events that irrefutably made the U.S. the
country it is today and shows what may have happened had the Indians not been in existence. For
example, America may not have been settled as quickly if not for the Indians because explorers
wouldn t have known of the hidden gold and silver deposits, many early settlements would likely have
failed without knowledge and support from the Indians, and guerilla warfare was practically taught to
the Americans by the Indians and became a central piece in the winning of the American Revolution.
Most importantly, however, contact with the Indians helped Americanize the settlers. It was the
changes in the European culture brought on by the Indians

Spanking Is A Negative Consequences Of Disciplining Children
Discipline is very important in everyone s life. All parents try to do their best for their children.
However, this crucial issue is sometimes misunderstood by some parents when it comes to
disciplining their children. Some parents use a very controversial method known as spanking which is
a corporal punishment that can have tremendous consequences on a child s life. Although defenders of
corporal punishment argue that spanking allows parents to curb children s behavior, spanking has been
shown to have long lasting effects on a child. Not only does it teach children to be violent, it also
reduces the trust between parents and children. Furthermore, it makes a child experience resentment
towards his parents.
First, spanking is bad because it teaches children to be violent. When a child is hit for discipline, he
will experience aggressiveness, and while playing with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Spanking gives children a kind of fear towards their parents because they bear in mind that if
something is wrong, they will automatically be punished, and this can be a burden they will carry into
adulthood. This lack of faith can sometimes lead to a certain kind of introverted behavior in some
children because their parents used to hit them when they say something wrong in front of their
friends. And this can be of greater impact on the child s mental health. Instead, as an alternative to
spanking, parents can choose to talk to their children, have an open dialogue where they can teach
them right from wrong without shouting or hitting.
Last, spanking can make a child feel resentment towards his parents. Children who are used to being
spanked develop a kind of bitterness that can rapidly turn into hatred because the child will have the
feeling that his parents don t care about him. In addition, what really interest them are the errors he
makes and how they are going to punish him. So in the end, the child will turn his back on his

Research Paper On Peaky Blinders
In the last five years there has been an enormous shift in the way television is consumed, largely due
to the growing availability of content online. The internet has brought the power of what, when and
where a program is consumed into the hands of the viewer (Pittman Sheehan, 2015). This has caused a
surge in both the amount, and the frequency of television consumed, leading to a growth of a viewing
practice known as binge watching (Matrix, 2014; Pittman Sheehan, 2015). Streaming services, such as
Netflix, have helped to facilitate this change in consumption practices (Pittman Sheehan, 2015).
Netflix is an online streaming platform with a large variety of television programs and movies, which
are made available to subscribers for a small monthly fee. Some of the content is exclusive to the
streaming site, and others have originated elsewhere but are now available through the streaming
service. Peaky Blinders is a show that falls into the latter category, having originally aired on BBC
Two in the United Kingdom. The first three seasons of Peaky Blinders have recently been made
available on Netflix. As shown in my media journal, this was how I consumed this program. While
Peaky Blinders was not originally distributed as a program to binge watch, it does meet several of the
criteria which makes it a program ideal for this type of consumption. Peaky Blinders is a British crime
drama about a Birmingham gang of the same name, set just after the First World War. Each

Traditional double hung windows have various moving parts, many of them being necessary to keep

Analysis Of William Shakespeare s Romeo And Juliet
Introduction What s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell just as
sweet. This quote from Shakespeare is from the balcony scene when Juliet tells Romeo that his name
is meaningless and that he is still a handsome young man and that only their family names are
enemies. This same quote can be applied in today s society in how people address each other based on
different situations, especially when addressing women. There are many different titles that can be
used to address women as opposed to men, but despite the title used, the woman herself does not
change. Only the meaning and stereotype associated with the title used changes.
Throughout the years, the titles used to address women have slowly shifted meaning from that of a
social status to that of a marital status. Erickson (2014) explains that the titles Miss and Mrs. are the
oldest coined terms used to address women, and both of them derive from the title Mistress. Both titles
were generally only used for those of higher power and status. Miss described young girls while Mrs. ,
described women who had governed subjects, was skilled, or who taught. Upon reaching adulthood, a
Miss became a Mrs. , and according to the Oxford English Dictionary, it was common for older,
unmarried women to still use the title Mrs. so they could increase their standing to be on par with
married women. This was why sometimes this referred to as a title of politeness or courtesy title. But

The Revitalization Of The Sears Concourse Building
Is it possible for a community to entrust artists with the responsibility of redeveloping a
neighborhood? After all, doubts are understandable; artists are better at being artists and developers
are best at being developers. As a matter of fact, does an artist/real estate developer even exist? Just
the mere thought seems impractical. Although this may be true in most cities, Memphis, Tennessee is
currently in the middle of a Renaissance, and artists are leading the way. The anchor of this
Renaissance is the revitalization of The Sears Concourse building. The Art Deco 1.5 million square
foot structure built in 1927 was once a source of pride for the city, attracting 30,000 visitors at its
grand opening to marvel at its decadence and eventually serving as a distribution hub for 50 years.
Employing 1500 people and attracting thousands of visitors per day in the department store, it was an
economic pillar of the Crosstown neighborhood. However, in 2010, the building standing empty for
22 years, became an eyesore that Crosstown co founder Todd Richardson describes as a beacon of
hope that is now a disappointing reminder of unmet expectations for the city . The surrounding
neighborhood would keep hoping sooner or later, someone would eventually solve the dilemma of
what to do with so much space that had been empty for so long. Year after year, businesses boarded
up, houses deteriorated and neighbors lost hope. No one knew what to do; that is to say, until an artist,

The Tempest By William Shakespeare And Mama Day By Gloria...
The Tempest by William Shakespeare and Mama Day by Gloria Naylor are two fantastic stories that
both belong to the genre magical realism, which is where magical elements are incorporated into
realistic fiction. Prospero the main character is robbed of Dukedom and marooned on an island with
his infant daughter where he meets natives and fire demons who do his bidding. Mama Day the main
character in Gloria Naylor s novel is a no nonsense woman who uses her magic to help the other
residents of their island. Even though Naylor denies that Mama Day is modern retelling of the
Tempest it is hard not see that there are similarities between the stories. However, there are some
differences. Prospero takes justice into his own hands, just as the characters around Mama Day take
their situations into their own hands. They do not trust Mama Day s ways until they are forced to ask
for her help. Whereas Prospero and Miranda might seem like parallel characters because they both use
magic, Miranda knows its limits and uses it to help others, while Prospero only discovers the limits of
magic after he gives it up.
After breaking his staff and throwing his books into the sea, Prospero is left with little to no power of
his own. It is in his last speech in the play, in the epilogue, that he realizes that his magic is nothing
without outside help. He no longer has the outside power of his books and staffs to make his magic
work so he is weak and vulnerable. Prospero realizes he will never get off

Texas case served as the tip of the iceberg into advancing the gay rights movement in Texas and
nationwide. Without the case as well as the specific decision made by the Supreme Court, Texas
would still be majorly intolerant, discriminant, and unrepresented by the LGBT community and
supporters. Lawrence and Garner were two men who fought for their love, their privacy, and their

views that are voiced as the majority in Texas. In the past few years, Texas Democrats have voiced
their support of same sex marriage, the next step in the gay rights movement. In 2012 their support

Every Last Word Analysis
The novel Every Last Word written by Tamara Ireland Stone is a beautiful, realistic portrayal of OCD
and anxiety disorders of a 16 year old girl, named Samantha McAllister. It grabs the reader from the
very first page and does not let them go. Every Last Word tells the story of a high school junior
Samantha Sam. She suffers from Purely Obsessional OCD, but does not want anyone to find out about
it. She is a part of a group of popular girls, the Crazy Eights , her so called friends, she has known
since elementary school. Sam hides her secret even from her best friends . The Crazy Eights not
understanding her disorder is not the only reason she keeps it under wraps. She yearns to fit in and feel
and seem like a normal teenager, just like everyone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Caroline tells her that the reason he will not accept her is because she hurt AJ along time ago but
Caroline refuses to give her the details. Sam then remembers that she and her friends bullied him in
elementary school about his stuttering so much that AJ had to transfer schools! Caroline then tells her
that she should write a poem to apologize and then maybe he will let her in the Poet s Corner. They sit
in the auditorium and work on the poem all through lunch. The next day during lunch Sam tells her
friends she has to go to the library but instead goes back to the Poet s Corner AJ turns down her
request to join Poet s Corner again but Sam gives him the apology poem anyway and leaves. A month
later she sees Sydney in history class and Sydney says that they talked it over and want Sam to meet
them at lunch in Poet s Corner. Thus, Sam finally becomes a member of Poet s Corner. AJ eventually
forgives her and overtime they become close and start dating. Life seems great for Sam with her
feeling close to both AJ and Caroline. She hides all this from her Crazy Eight friends in fear of them
not accepting her socially awkward Poet s corner

Learning Style for Student Nurses
In this essay I will be discussing the importance of understanding learning styles for student nurses. I
will also be focusing on the learning cycle and learning style using the Honey and Mumford 80
questionnaire. I look into the details of how learning style helps students to understand the importance
of recognising one s learning style preference. I will also provide an understanding of learning and
learning theories and discuss my own dominant learning style and how I aim to deal with my
weaknesses to progress well in the nursing programme.
Learning is defined as a permanent change in attitude or behaviour that occurs as a result of repeated
experience (Sims Sims, 1995). Understanding one s learning style has many advantages as it ... Show

The behaviourist approach, used by Pavlov and Skinner (1927 and 1952 cited in Gould, 2009),
established that learning is change in behaviour brought about by experience. Studies and research
have proven that we can voluntarily and involuntary respond to certain stimuli, and what we have
learnt from previous experience. Such associative behaviour can condition our response to our way of
learning and shape our learning style (Yildirim Ozkahraman, 2011). Once we have recognised the
most predominant learning style we are able to work out how to strengthen the weaker learning style
and enhance the dominant. Cottrell (2013) stated that discovering which learning style is best for us
can help our learning in the most effective way.
There are four stages to the learning cycle, which are included in the four distinct learning styles. The
first stage is having an experience reactively, which allows the experience to come to us without
making much effort to seek it, in contrast to proactively whereby we seek out the experience. The
second stage is reviewing or reflecting on the experience. Reflecting on experience is vital and it plays
an important role in learning. The third stage is concluding from the experience and lastly planning the
next steps to enable the learner to have an action plan for what is required to be done (Honey and
Mumford 2006). There is a strong connection between learning style and learning

Victorian Marriage
In Victorian England marriage was a necessity. If a woman did not marry well, then she could not
receive any of the advantages that a married woman received. Married women had financial security.
Married women had an estate (with their husband) where they could host guests. Married women had
children, and could fulfill the role of motherhood. Unmarried women did not have any of this, so from
a young age girls learned how to become suitable wives. A suitable wife needed to know how to
cook, clean house, sing, dance, play an instrument, become a hostess, and care for children. Once
married, the role of a woman became caring for the household, no matter what her marriage looked
like or why she married. In Pride and Prejudice Jane Austen shows her reader the importance of
marriage through couples who married for varying reasons.
A woman might marry due to a sense of duty. Austen shows the reader this through her character
Charlotte. Mr. Collins proposes to Charlotte Lucas soon after his offer Elizabeth rejects his offer.
Charlotte knows that her friend Elizabeth has declined Mr. Collins offer, and that it is not acceptable
for him to propose to someone else so soon after, but she accepts his proposal. When asked about it
later, Charlotte tells Elizabeth that she had to accept it because she might not ... Show more content on

Austen illustrates lust through the match of Lydia and Mr. Wickham. Lydia ran off with Wickham
because she found his social status attractive. As an officer, Wickham held a higher status than that of
the Bennet family. Knowing this, Lydia ran away with him. This made Lydia a dishonor for her
family. Marriage was important and having a daughter run away unmarried was one of the biggest
disgraces possible for the Bennets. When a woman eloped without a proper marriage, the only option
that the family saw was to somehow convince Lydia to marry the man with whom she had run away.
This is why Mr. Bennet had to go find

Pretty Hurts
In Beyoncé s, Pretty Hurts, she describes the expectations of women in the current American society.
Beyoncé uses numerous stereotypes of the perfect lifestyle and appearance to explain what the
American individual is expected to be. In this song, the American individual is described as one who
follows all labels and is considered perfect in the eyes of society, and Beyoncé further explains how
this idea is incorrect. In one of the opening lines, Beyoncé says, What s in your head it doesn t matter /
Brush your hair, fix your teeth / What you wear is all that matters (Beyoncé Lines 2 4). Given this, it is
understood that an American individual should not show how they are really feeling. No matter what
is going on inside, one must present ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Given this, it is explained that the expectations listed above are the problems with society. Society s
expectations of perfection and hiding of emotions give unrealistic ideas to women about the
individuals they should be. Instead of trying to fit the expectations of society, everyone should reveal
their flaws and be proud of themselves. When everyone tries to be perfect, they are only disappointed
because of how unrealistic and impossible it is to achieve their goal of perfection. These expectations
and disappointments are the problems with society, because perfection is an unachievable objective.
These lines explain that the American individual should not be one to follow societal expectations,
even though it is falsely believed that perfection makes the ideal individual. An additional line that
describes the American individual is, South beach, sugar free / Vogue says / Thinner is better
(Beyoncé 19 21). Considering this, Beyoncé is explaining that society believes everyone should be
thin which can be achieved by being sugar free. Only those who are sugar free will be skinny and
therefore will be satisfying society. Society expects all women to be thin and slender, and not
following these expectations not acceptable. These lines, once again, explain that the American
individual is expected to be thin, or in other words, an unrealistic

Cognitive Dysfunctions
Memory takes the information that we receive, through vision, hearing, and touch, and places that
information into a usable form and stores that information for later use. Drug addicts, however, have
cognitive dysfunction as the areas of the brain that deal with addiction also destroy those same parts of
the brain that deal with cognitive functions which include memory.Although many studies have been
done in regards to the use of drugs and the damage they do both physically and mentally, there has not
been much research systematically about the direct effects that opiates can have on the brain and the
cognitive functions. This paper will look at the various research that has been done and take a look at
the destructive effects that drugs, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not understanding these adverse effects of opiates is what got us all to the point we are at today. The
studies that have been performed over the last two decades have brought many harsh realities to light
about the wonder painkiller drug. It is time to offer new research in alternative pain medication reeds
and come to better pain management techniques and drug choices. It is clear from the research that
opiates cannot be used as directed for a sustained amount of time, nor can they closely monitored by
individuals as these drugs modify the brain s pleasure centers into craving drug that is supposed to
help. I am not for the complete abolishment of these drugs, however, responsibility for its abuse is
going to have to fall on those individuals who prescribe it, and the responsibility for treatment if and
when abuse occurs, should also fall on those same

Even though it sounds pretty gross, it was a true thing that happened in ancient times. The ancient Greek Olympics, although very long ago, have had a lasting effect on our society today. According to World History teacher Laron Johnson, the Greek Empire started in 8th Century BC. The Greeks have always valued competition; they constantly fought with each other as well as working together to fight against other peoples (Johnson). They have given us a lot of our modern things. Thus, the ancient Greek Olympics have had an impact on our modern society in global unity, sporting events, and our obsession with sports. The Olympics have always been a way to bring people together. Even when the city states were fighting each other, they put aside their differences and competed peacefully. Mark Cartwright states, The Games started with a procession which went from the host town of Elis to Olympia...and on arrival at Olympia all athletes and officials swore an oath to follow the established rules of the competitions and to compete with honour and respect (Cartwright). Basically, the athletes were promoting unity among the city states by swearing to uphold their oath of truce during the games. In this illusion the lines in both A and B are the same length however the arrows pointing inwards in A make the line appear longer than when the arrows point outwards as in B. Gregory explained this illusion in 1970 by suggesting that the lines are perceived as being three dimensional rather than two dimensional. This is shown in figure 2 where A is shown as the inside of the room and B shown as the outside. By perceiving the objects in this way A becomes further away than B. However given that the lines are of the same size by applying the principle of size constancy it can be concluded that A is perceived as being longer than B. For this to be perceived knowledge about what the outside and inside of a building looks like must be taken into account. This therefore shows how prior knowledge is used when the image is perceived and so shows how the Muller Lyer illusion is perceived through top down processing. Similarly the  Necker Cube illusion (figure 3) can also be explained through top down processing. Leonard Nelson writes in The Socratic Method that this method of teaching focusses on giving students questions rather than answers, thereby allowing the students to interact and seek truth. For this reason, the student becomes the center of education, and the teacher becomes the facilitator of information. This is why Plato writes in Meno that knowledge will not come from teaching, but it will come from questioning (Thompson). I enjoyed the Socratic seminars in high a school because it allowed me as a student to search for answers to the given question, and I had immediate feedback from my peers. As a teacher, I would like to use this method occasionally because I value critical thinking rather than passively receiving information. Realism maintains an objective order of reality in which we gain knowledge from that reality. Many teachers value and use this philosophy of education in their classrooms today. Perhaps one of the most influential catalyst for realism in the classroom is Dr. Maria Montessori. According to this, the development of the differentiation between outside and inside has encountered two periods, using vampire gothic novels as examples. Firstly, using the novel Dracula , Count Dracula is defined as the outside , which still mirrors some human tendency and instinct. Secondly, using Interview with the vampire , the introspective vampire like Louis is considered as the inside , which symbolizes modern consciousness however lacking in the outside . Ultimately the outside can be transformed to the deeper ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Similarly, human beings also have such kinds of needs for self preservation, yet we separate the needs for sexuality and eating individually. In addition, Dracula has to marry outside for reproduction due to a physical barrier, which is also reflected in the human being s instinctive desire for foreign women. However, the imperialism of Dracula, reflecting the Outside aspects of Dracula is still observable. Dracula serves as a superior figure who possesses tremendous seduction power to the women who originally belongs to the good men s group and turns them into the opposite of their original group. The statement of Mina Leagued with your enemy against you. (Stocker 337) quite voices the anxiety and fear of the good men s group. Also, the image of the women after being transformed into vampires encounters an entire change. The purity of women is forever lost and instead they turn voluptuous and demanding and thus become otherness, which deepens the fears of losing masculinity of the Good men s group. • 22. The Polished Hoe Analysis The Polished Hoe, a novel written by Austin Clarke, is revealed throughout a single Sunday nightfall and ceases at the beginning of sunrise; it starts in obscurity so to speak and finishes in the light. The story is conveyed primarily through the conversation and interaction between the two characters: Mary Mathilda, the protagonist, and Percy Stuart, known to all as Sarge, as well as through flashbacks occurring in their minds when the conversation lulls. This interaction occurs shortly after Mary Mathilda kills Mr. Bellfeels, her lover since she was thirteen and father of her son Wilberforce, a doctor of tropical medicine. Mr. Bellfeels, the manager of Flagstaff plantation and the antagonist of the story, is omnipresent, if only because much of the conversation is about him; moreover, even if both characters know that he is dead, the conditioned fear his brutal, tyrannical acts have instilled in Sarge and Mary Mathilda inhibit for a very long time their interaction over the course of the evening. The recurring motif, abuse of power, is illustrated in the entirety of the novel through Mary Mathilda s traumatizing experiences, the plutocrats iron grip over their laborers, and the unbalanced education system. To begin with, Mary Mathilda s motive for the killing is clearly stated in the following excerpt: Mr. Bellfeels took her [Mary Matilda] as his right, in his natural arrogance of ownership . . . If it wasn t you, Mary girl Ma told her, it would be somebody else s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 23. The Yellow Wallpaper, By Perkins Gilman Perkins Gilman aptly used narrative voice to shape the meaning of The Yellow Wallpaper, by writing a first person narrative about a woman who slowly loses herself to madness. This voice is one of a woman who may possibly have post partum depression or some other form of manic depression, and her unheard cries for help. She slowly draws within herself, and allows the insanity to take over. Within the first few paragraphs we learn general characteristics about the narrator: she is middle class, as indicated by the phrase mere ordinary people (354); we also learn that she is married, suggested a statement about John laughing at her, something she says is only expected in marriage. Though we are never given her name, these generic aspects ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Early on, she openly admits that she may be ill, which quickly lends some reason to doubt when it comes to some of the things she talks about. Are there really women hiding behind the wallpaper? Surely not. Is there a woman lurking in the bushes outside? Unlikely. Are the patterns and shapes on the wallpaper interesting and thought provoking? Probably so. That is all she thought of the wallpaper when first confined to the room yellowish in color, with strange shapes woven into the texture. However, as her condition worsens, the way she looks at the wallpaper grows more and more distorted. The textures and strokes take shape and form; they turn into living beings, women who are confined between the layers of wallpaper. The narrator begins to feel sympathetic for them, feeling trapped and confined as well. The narrative slowly shifts from first to second person, with the inclusion of a you. Instead of simply describing her feelings, she then begins to say this is how such a thing would make you feel. The narrator s descriptions of the room itself change with each entry. At first, it is merely irritating. She describes the color as repellent, almost revolting; a smouldering unclean yellow, strangely faded by the slow turning light (356). Any reliable, sane person would be irritated by an ugly yellow on their walls. By the second entry, she admits she has a growing fondness for the room, aside from the wallpaper. • 24. 1984 Love And Hate Quotes Winston s emotions of love and hate are interchangeable and have no stable target because the Party is able to control the exact moments in which these emotion are expressed; by torturing Winston and forcing him to leave his emotions vulnerable, the Party is able to fully control the target of Winston s emotions and make them authentic. Emotions, especially hatred, become chaotic and unclear when the Party members are able to reveal them. During the Two Minutes Hate while he is staring at Goldstein s face on the screen, Orwell writes: Suddenly, by the sort of violent effort with which one wrenches one s head away from the pillow in a nightmare, Winston succeeded in transferring his hatred from the face on the screen to the dark haired girl behind him (15). Wrenches conveys how Winston is able to quickly transfer his hate from Goldstein to the girl behind him, demonstrating how little the recipient of hatred matters. The feeling of hate is so strong that the target has no importance, as long as the hatred is expressed. The phrase violent effort highlights the feeling of urgency to release emotion during the Two Minutes Hate. Any outward expression of emotion is condemned in the society, therefore the feeling of hatred becomes uncontrollable and frantic. Winston ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 25. The Crucial Role of Native Americans Essays For the better part of American history, the Indians have been viewed and portrayed as dimwitted, helpless victims that aimlessly stood by while the Europeans conquered their land, but this view has recently come under fire and has been overturned, as it was determined to be misleading and inaccurate. Two historians that have questioned the legitimacy of past beliefs regarding the Indians are Charles Mann and James Axtell. Each has made it plainly clear in their articles that the actions of Indians should no longer be treated as useless footnotes on the pages of history. While their articles are on seemingly different subjects, their views and beliefs on the importance of Indians in American history are incontrovertibly the same as both ... Tisquantum was using the oblivious Europeans for his own means, and although he never achieved his goals, it is worth pointing out that he had ulterior motives for aiding the Pilgrims in their time of need. Mann does a good job of supporting his opinion and showing that Indians were not just aloof and passive but conniving and manipulative like their European counterparts. Unfortunately, in the end all the planning and trickery in the world couldn t have saved the Indians as they were just simply outnumbered and technologically inferior to the Europeans. James Axtell wrote the article entitled, Colonial America Without the Indians and it goes into extreme detail to pinpoint the impact that the Indians had on American history. Axtell picks out important events that irrefutably made the U.S. the country it is today and shows what may have happened had the Indians not been in existence. For example, America may not have been settled as quickly if not for the Indians because explorers wouldn t have known of the hidden gold and silver deposits, many early settlements would likely have failed without knowledge and support from the Indians, and guerilla warfare was practically taught to the Americans by the Indians and became a central piece in the winning of the American Revolution. Most importantly, however, contact with the Indians helped Americanize the settlers. It was the changes in the European culture brought on by the Indians ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, this crucial issue is sometimes misunderstood by some parents when it comes to disciplining their children. Some parents use a very controversial method known as spanking which is a corporal punishment that can have tremendous consequences on a child s life. Although defenders of corporal punishment argue that spanking allows parents to curb children s behavior, spanking has been shown to have long lasting effects on a child. Not only does it teach children to be violent, it also reduces the trust between parents and children. Furthermore, it makes a child experience resentment towards his parents. First, spanking is bad because it teaches children to be violent. When a child is hit for discipline, he will experience aggressiveness, and while playing with ... And this can be of greater impact on the child s mental health. Instead, as an alternative to spanking, parents can choose to talk to their children, have an open dialogue where they can teach them right from wrong without shouting or hitting. Last, spanking can make a child feel resentment towards his parents. Children who are used to being spanked develop a kind of bitterness that can rapidly turn into hatred because the child will have the feeling that his parents don t care about him. • 27. Research Paper On Peaky Blinders In the last five years there has been an enormous shift in the way television is consumed, largely due to the growing availability of content online. The internet has brought the power of what, when and where a program is consumed into the hands of the viewer (Pittman Sheehan, 2015). This has caused a surge in both the amount, and the frequency of television consumed, leading to a growth of a viewing practice known as binge watching (Matrix, 2014; Pittman Sheehan, 2015). Streaming services, such as Netflix, have helped to facilitate this change in consumption practices (Pittman Sheehan, 2015). Netflix is an online streaming platform with a large variety of television programs and movies, which are made available to subscribers for a small monthly fee. Some of the content is exclusive to the streaming site, and others have originated elsewhere but are now available through the streaming service. Peaky Blinders is a show that falls into the latter category, having originally aired on BBC Two in the United Kingdom. The first three seasons of Peaky Blinders have recently been made available on Netflix. As shown in my media journal, this was how I consumed this program. While Peaky Blinders was not originally distributed as a program to binge watch, it does meet several of the criteria which makes it a program ideal for this type of consumption. This quote from Shakespeare is from the balcony scene when Juliet tells Romeo that his name is meaningless and that he is still a handsome young man and that only their family names are enemies. This same quote can be applied in today s society in how people address each other based on different situations, especially when addressing women. There are many different titles that can be used to address women as opposed to men, but despite the title used, the woman herself does not change. Only the meaning and stereotype associated with the title used changes. Throughout the years, the titles used to address women have slowly shifted meaning from that of a social status to that of a marital status. Erickson (2014) explains that the titles Miss and Mrs. are the oldest coined terms used to address women, and both of them derive from the title Mistress. Both titles were generally only used for those of higher power and status. Miss described young girls while Mrs. , described women who had governed subjects, was skilled, or who taught. Upon reaching adulthood, a Miss became a Mrs. , and according to the Oxford English Dictionary, it was common for older, unmarried women to still use the title Mrs. so they could increase their standing to be on par with married women. This was why sometimes this referred to as a title of politeness or courtesy title. But by the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. The Revitalization Of The Sears Concourse Building Is it possible for a community to entrust artists with the responsibility of redeveloping a neighborhood? After all, doubts are understandable; artists are better at being artists and developers are best at being developers. As a matter of fact, does an artist/real estate developer even exist? Just the mere thought seems impractical. Although this may be true in most cities, Memphis, Tennessee is currently in the middle of a Renaissance, and artists are leading the way. The anchor of this Renaissance is the revitalization of The Sears Concourse building. The Art Deco 1.5 million square foot structure built in 1927 was once a source of pride for the city, attracting 30,000 visitors at its grand opening to marvel at its decadence and eventually serving as a distribution hub for 50 years. Employing 1500 people and attracting thousands of visitors per day in the department store, it was an economic pillar of the Crosstown neighborhood. However, in 2010, the building standing empty for 22 years, became an eyesore that Crosstown co founder Todd Richardson describes as a beacon of hope that is now a disappointing reminder of unmet expectations for the city . The surrounding neighborhood would keep hoping sooner or later, someone would eventually solve the dilemma of what to do with so much space that had been empty for so long. • 32. The Tempest By William Shakespeare And Mama Day By Gloria... The Tempest by William Shakespeare and Mama Day by Gloria Naylor are two fantastic stories that both belong to the genre magical realism, which is where magical elements are incorporated into realistic fiction. Prospero the main character is robbed of Dukedom and marooned on an island with his infant daughter where he meets natives and fire demons who do his bidding. Mama Day the main character in Gloria Naylor s novel is a no nonsense woman who uses her magic to help the other residents of their island. Even though Naylor denies that Mama Day is modern retelling of the Tempest it is hard not see that there are similarities between the stories. However, there are some differences. Prospero takes justice into his own hands, just as the characters around Mama Day take their situations into their own hands. They do not trust Mama Day s ways until they are forced to ask for her help. Whereas Prospero and Miranda might seem like parallel characters because they both use magic, Miranda knows its limits and uses it to help others, while Prospero only discovers the limits of magic after he gives it up. After breaking his staff and throwing his books into the sea, Prospero is left with little to no power of his own. It is in his last speech in the play, in the epilogue, that he realizes that his magic is nothing without outside help. He no longer has the outside power of his books and staffs to make his magic work so he is weak and vulnerable. Prospero realizes he will never get off ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The behaviourist approach, used by Pavlov and Skinner (1927 and 1952 cited in Gould, 2009), established that learning is change in behaviour brought about by experience. Studies and research have proven that we can voluntarily and involuntary respond to certain stimuli, and what we have learnt from previous experience. Such associative behaviour can condition our response to our way of learning and shape our learning style (Yildirim Ozkahraman, 2011). Once we have recognised the most predominant learning style we are able to work out how to strengthen the weaker learning style and enhance the dominant. Cottrell (2013) stated that discovering which learning style is best for us can help our learning in the most effective way. There are four stages to the learning cycle, which are included in the four distinct learning styles. The first stage is having an experience reactively, which allows the experience to come to us without making much effort to seek it, in contrast to proactively whereby we seek out the experience. The second stage is reviewing or reflecting on the experience. Reflecting on experience is vital and it plays an important role in learning. Married women had financial security. Married women had an estate (with their husband) where they could host guests. Married women had children, and could fulfill the role of motherhood. Unmarried women did not have any of this, so from a young age girls learned how to become suitable wives. A suitable wife needed to know how to cook, clean house, sing, dance, play an instrument, become a hostess, and care for children. Once married, the role of a woman became caring for the household, no matter what her marriage looked like or why she married. In Pride and Prejudice Jane Austen shows her reader the importance of marriage through couples who married for varying reasons. A woman might marry due to a sense of duty. Austen shows the reader this through her character Charlotte. Mr. Collins proposes to Charlotte Lucas soon after his offer Elizabeth rejects his offer. Charlotte knows that her friend Elizabeth has declined Mr. Collins offer, and that it is not acceptable for him to propose to someone else so soon after, but she accepts his proposal. When asked about it later, Charlotte tells Elizabeth that she had to accept it because she might not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Beyoncé uses numerous stereotypes of the perfect lifestyle and appearance to explain what the American individual is expected to be. In this song, the American individual is described as one who follows all labels and is considered perfect in the eyes of society, and Beyoncé further explains how this idea is incorrect. In one of the opening lines, Beyoncé says, What s in your head it doesn t matter / Brush your hair, fix your teeth / What you wear is all that matters (Beyoncé Lines 2 4). Given this, it is understood that an American individual should not show how they are really feeling. No matter what is going on inside, one must present ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Given this, it is explained that the expectations listed above are the problems with society. Society s expectations of perfection and hiding of emotions give unrealistic ideas to women about the individuals they should be. Instead of trying to fit the expectations of society, everyone should reveal their flaws and be proud of themselves. When everyone tries to be perfect, they are only disappointed because of how unrealistic and impossible it is to achieve their goal of perfection. These expectations and disappointments are the problems with society, because perfection is an unachievable objective. These lines explain that the American individual should not be one to follow societal expectations, even though it is falsely believed that perfection makes the ideal individual. An additional line that describes the American individual is, South beach, sugar free / Vogue says / Thinner is better (Beyoncé 19 21). Considering this, Beyoncé is explaining that society believes everyone should be thin which can be achieved by being sugar free. Only those who are sugar free will be skinny and therefore will be satisfying society. Society expects all women to be thin and slender, and not following these expectations not acceptable. These lines, once again, explain that the American individual is expected to be thin, or in other words, an unrealistic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Not understanding these adverse effects of opiates is what got us all to the point we are at today. The studies that have been performed over the last two decades have brought many harsh realities to light about the wonder painkiller drug. It is time to offer new research in alternative pain medication reeds and come to better pain management techniques and drug choices. It is clear from the research that opiates cannot be used as directed for a sustained amount of time, nor can they closely monitored by individuals as these drugs modify the brain s pleasure centers into craving drug that is supposed to help. I am not for the complete abolishment of these drugs, however, responsibility for its abuse is going to have to fall on those individuals who prescribe it, and the responsibility for treatment if and when abuse occurs, should also fall on those same ...
