The Value Of A Performance
Performance
It was another good quarter for the portfolio, up 3.2%. This brings our 1 year performance to 7.5%
and our 5 year performance to 11.6%. Both of these returns are well ahead of our long term return
target of spending plus inflation.
The endowment increased $89 million in value during the quarter and now stands at $3,768 billion.
Below is a summary of the changes during the quarter:
Endowment millions
Beginning Value $3,679
Investment Return 117
Spending (29)
Ending Value $3,768
Spending during the quarter was made up of $xx million of grants, $x million of PRI s and $x million
of operating costs. This is approximately 17% of our projected spend for the year, so we have much
more to come.

We also had excellent performance in our venture capital and private equity portfolio. Unlike Q1,
where most of the Venture Capital and Buyout performance was driven by an individual portfolio
company, Xiaomi, this quarter s performance was equally distributed among managers in both Venture
and Buyout. Within venture, the US portfolio in particular enjoyed a strong quarter, led by mark ups at
Great Hill, Atlas, and Arboretum. Most of these gains were unrealized, with the exception of Great
Hill, which distributed $4 million to Kresge as a result of the sale of Latisys Holding, a data center
service provider. The buyout portfolio also saw a mix of positive unrealized and realized gains in the
quarter. Cabot Square s consumer finance platform in Portugal, BNP Credito, was marked up by $3
million in the quarter, while CD R distributed $4 million stemming from the successful sale of
Envision Healthcare.

Social Hierarchies In Ancient Egypt, China, And India
Hierarchies were used to describe the way past societies were structured, distinguishing one group of
individuals from another. People were ranked into different groups depending on their occupation or
wealth status. The richest or most powerful people were at the top of the social class while the
underprivileged people or ones without great responsibility were ranked at the bottom. This system
was widely spread throughout the world in many centuries. In Ancient Egypt, China, and India s
power systems they all had similar ideas of the way their social class was established but also had
different systems. In Ancient Egypt, the population was divided and categorized into groups of people
with different jobs and responsibilities. These power

The Mandrill Primate And The Primate
Writing Assignment: The Mandrill Primate For this assignment, I have decided to design an enclosure
about the primate, Mandrill. I will, in words, describe an enclosure that will prevent these nonhuman
primates from not being suited to their natural habitat needs. Throughout this assignment, I will design
my very own version of a perfect enclosure that secures these primates by critically thinking of any
psychological or physical problems that can occur. What also will need to partake is considering the
perspective of the nonhuman primates, the zookeepers, and the visitors as well. Designing an
enclosure has to be precise and detailed. I will do the best I can to be as detailed as I can be when
designing this enclosure. First, to be able to design an enclosure, we must know a little about our
species that will be in it. Well, the Mandrill is a type of primate of the Old World monkey family and
are usually found in parts of South American, specifically Cameroon, Gabon, Guinea, and Congo
(Wikipedia). The Mandrill is known for their colorful characteristics that vary in colors from blue to
violet and also have a scarlet color alongside the bridge and end of their nose (Britannica). In my
opinion, the mandrills are considered to be the most unique and interesting primates that I have seen
and that are why I have decided to write about them. The mandrill is formerly grouped with the
baboons. So, what happens to a nonhuman primate when the zoo enclosure does not suit

The Threat Of The Cyber Threat
Since the onset of the first packet switching event that many believe to be beginning of the internet, no
other technology besides the printing press has ever transformed the ability to deliver information.
Although the internet is used by a large percentage of the civilized world, few Americans realize how
vital cyberspace is to our national infrastructure. Today, we are faced with even more threats although
it has been a recognized problem since 2009, when President Barrack Obama said The cyber threat is
one of the most serious economic and national security challenges we face as a nation. It s also clear
that we re not as prepared as we should be, as a government or as a country (Obama, 2009). Every
industry that operates in the United States is dependent on the internet for some aspect of their
business. Commerce, transportation, financial institutions, military, as well as industrial control
systems are all interconnected. This interconnectedness has created vulnerabilities within their
infrastructure that have increasingly become targets of terrorists, script kiddies, foreign governments
and hackers of all types. Cyber attacks against Sony Pictures brought the vulnerabilities of poor cyber
security policies to light. These attacks are nothing new but they appear to be getting more severe.
According to James Clapper, the director of national intelligence, Cyber threats to U.S. national and
economic security are increasing in frequency, scale, sophistication, and

How Did The Medici Have Too Much Power
The Medici had too much power. Why. Because, they want to become power for themselves. The
Medici s complex relationship with Florence and used their position of the papacy to build their own
power through and after the Pope Leo X indulgences. In the country of Florence, people would used
their time wisely and their choice through a man would of raised into the country in their way to a

rule. The Medici wants to build more to his country and for him to become powerful The room full of
people talking, and in that room The Medici family and Cosimo and Florence. What they are doing is
talking about the wealthiest power. By 1457, under the direction of Cosimo, The Medici family was

indulgence which would remit your sins, it would cleanse your sins ( The Medici Popes ). I wonder
why would the Pope Leo X sell the papal indulgence. My opinion, is that I think those papers were
really important to others people that may had work with the Pope. This is just similar to The

History Of San Francisco Bay
2. BACKGROUND The San Francisco bay was one of the best natural harbours in the world and it
was also the gateway to the Pacific Ocean. (Loomis, 1958) This fact meant that its bay would become
a leading trade centre. A rush of people were attracted to San Francisco because of its port, the natural
beauty and the gold rush, where thousands of people were brought in by ship. This lead to a shortage
in water in all areas and transportation services had to be improved to provide enough water to all
places. A ferry service was started that crossed the river from San Francisco to Sacramento to carry
heavy equipment and people to the gold fields in the time of the gold rush and just thereafter. As the
population grew the ferry service improved as

Chinese Food Culture
Since the late 1800s, Chinese immigrants have come to our country bringing with them a rich culture,
that not only included art and poetry but they brought with them their very unique style of cuisine.
Chinese food has had a unique influence on American cuisine, with over 40,000 restaurants across the
United States, there are more Chinese restaurants in America than all the McDonald s Burger King s
and KFC s combined. The Chinese culture has truly made a huge imprint on the American food
industry. Chinese immigrants came over to the United States for many reasons, some came for the
tales of gold that flowed in the rivers with nuggets the size of a man s face, they rush to Gold
Mountain to change their lives and the lives of the families they left behind in China. Among the
immigrants were the men and women who practice the culinary art of cooking. Chinese food is unique

HR Technology Reflection Assignment
29. Your grandma is having her annual osteoporosis checkup, which includes an iDXA scan. Six
months ago, she had a spinal fusion at L1 L3. Her clinician uses ISCD diagnostic criteria. How should
the scan proceed? If her clinician used WHO diagnostic criteria, would you recommend the same scan
procedure?
The scan should proceed using the dual femur and the forearm. Her spine would not be the appropriate
site to analyze. The dual femur and forearm should be used in this case because she has had surgery at
L1 L3. The rods and screws from the surgery, would most likely generate higher T scores and Z
scores, which will misdiagnose her analyzation. Moreover, her spine is not a good area to be scanned,
due to her surgery. Therefore, the clinician should still use ISCD to generate a diagnosis. If the
clinician used WHO I would still recommend using just the dual femur scan. WHO analyzes the
femoral neck. Therefore, the forearm would not be needed for analyzation with this particular
organization.

The Pros And Cons Of Cyberbullying
ccount and send damaging messages, pretending to be someone else online to hurt another person.
Sexting, a circulating sexually suggestive pictures or messages, is reported that one in five teens have
posted or sent sexually suggestive or nude pictures of themselves to others ( Cyber Bullying Statistics
). Taking unflattering pictures of a person and spreading them through cell phones or the internet. A
statistic from the Harford County states that one in ten teens have had embarrassing or damaging
pictures taken of themselves without their permission ( Cyber Bullying Statistics ). On Twitter, a
social networking site, subtweeting is a new form of bullying. Subtweeting is the act of post a rude
comment without the name of the person it is about (Hinduja). Usually the person who posted the
tweet does not have the guts to tag the other person or say it to them in person. For example, a girl and
a boy broke up and the boy went to twitter to express his feelings. He would post something emotional
for the whole twitter world to see. In reality this, boy was talking about his old girlfriend and did not
have the guts to say it straight to her.
All age groups and genders are exposed to cyberbullying because of social media being available to
all people. The age group that cyberbullying affects the most is teenagers. Teens are more likely to be
involved with cyberbullying because adults have more to jeopardize. If adults would post
unprofessional comments about their bosses online, the outcome would be getting fired. Adults have a
better understanding of what correct behavior online looks like. Correct behavior online is referred to
netiquette, or internet etiquette. Netiquette lists have the same behaviors people are to use in real life.
The list includes politeness, courtesy, and respect. Rude behavior and inappropriate language is
discouraged (Arazoza). Teenagers behavior online can also jeopardize their future. Over eighty
percent of teens use a cell phone regularly, so that means that it is the most popular form of
technology and an easy way to cyberbully ( 11 ). Teens are less aware of the consequences of posting
online. Teachers and parents can be informed about the actions online and they can later judge that

John P. Parker Essay
His Promised Land: The Autobiography of John P. Parker, Former Slave And Conductor on the
Underground Railroad.
When we think of the conductors of the Underground Railroad many think of Harriet Tubman and her
only, but if we study history carefully we will find out that she is not the only conductor worth
mentioning. John P. Parker has to be one of the most underappreciated figures not only in African
American history but American history in general. If everyone was aware of this true American hero s
story, without question he would be a household name. The autobiography of John P. Parker is very
well written and will have any reader on the edge of their seat throughout the entire book. The
accounts of his experiences both as a slave ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was the first of many successful rescue missions. The next theme we will talk about will be
cleverness. Mr. Parker was so clever that he could easily avoid authority as well as slave owners and
even managed to convince a widow to purchase him from his master for $1,800 and was able to
purchase his freedom from the widow in just 18 months by working in the iron foundry. John Parker
was a very brilliant and clever man that lived a double life. By day he would work as an iron molder
and by night he would take slaves across the Ohio River. He was a brilliant inventor with patents to a
sugar mill, tobacco press, and soil pulverizer. Parker was a terrific businessman also. He was the
owner of a foundry and blacksmith shop at a time when many black businesses were failing. The final
theme that we will cover will be bravery. John Parker was very heroic and resilient. For almost fifteen
years John Parker helped slaves escape to freedom as a conductor on the Underground Railroad. The
dangers of getting caught helping slaves escape include jail time or even death. A good example of
John Parker s bravery would be when he snatched a whip out of a white nurse s hand and began
beating her because she was physically abusing her patients and Mr. Parker had had enough. This was
particularly brave because no slave in their right mind would ever strike a white woman and still be
around to talk about it. Perhaps the

The Thing In The Apartment By John William Ross
Since the first sound film in 1927, filmmakers employed tools to create sound effects and complete the
illusion (Cavalcanti, 1939). The use of sound became essential to the quality of films, particularly in
fiction where the audience seeks entertainment and thrill. Indeed, Rockett (1982) notes that music,
background noises and sounds effects are the elements creating a particular mood or atmosphere.
This theory is notably applicable to the horror genre, as its specificity is to incite fear and play on the
viewer s nerves. According to Rockett, horror is indeed primarily a sound based medium (1982).
Horror films sounds play with emotions, for instance with abrupt shifts up and down in pitch. As Gron
states, these sound contrasts function as priming mechanisms , playing with spectators expectations of
the scare (2013). These theories lead to the importance of recognising what makes an efficient sound
track to frighten the audience. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although this short refers to most conventions of horror films and does not shine by the originality of
the storyline, it does produce a very effective tension with regards to its short length. In this piece, I
will outline to what extent the sound of this short is powerful in creating tension and dread. I will first
set out the storyline and explain how The Thing in the Apartment characterises classical features of the
horror genre. Secondly, I will analyse the role of silence and background noise in shaping horror, as
well as highlighting how the sound contrasts inspire

Personal Identity, Ethics, Relation, And Rationality
Parfit

Derik Parfit is a philosopher from Britain who concentrates on issues of personal identity, ethics,
relation and rationality. Parfit is of the argument that unless questions about identity are dealt with
then it is not possible to tackle specific crucial questions like memory, responsibility and matters as
survival. Personal identity is important as it helps in addressing certain vital questions. According to
Parfit, survival does not require maintaining or preserving of identity but it is a common relation that
needs pursuing apart from identity and the relation consider are those that deals with intentions and
memory. Parfit argues that survival is a matter of degree unlike identity. In his argument he aimed at
differentiating between identity and matters of survival. As for survival, whereby in his view it is
possible for a person to survive as two, the original person s relation to that of each of resulting people
is of great concern as it creates a sense in which a single person can survive as two. He assumes that if
one s brain is divided into two and planted into new bodies; both resulting persons will possess the
original person s character and memories of his life. On the other hand, as for identity it is a one one
(is all or nothing) relation but matters in survival need not be one one.
The most important feature that helps us treat survival as a matter of degree is the fact at admits for a

Adoption Essay 15
Adoption
When a person decides to adopt, he takes the responsibility of raising a child who is not biologically
his own. There are various reasons why people decide to adopt. Some say adoption is the best thing
for certain children and many successful stories prove it to be true. However, there are also numerous
tragic reports of adopted children being abused. Basically, what adoption meant, and still means, is
that someone (the adoptive couple) is promising to assume all responsibilities for taking care of
someone else (Powledge 4). How the adoptive parents go about raising the child is completely up to
them. Although there are many different types of families in today s society, one special kind of family

There have been many various surveys taken concerning adoptees. Times reported various horror
stories concerning adoption. Some stories include children being poisoned, a child being shaken to
death, and children being sexually abused (Gay 89). Unfortunately these are just a few examples of
many. Adoptees often suffer from attachment disorders, which are more common in older children.
These disorders caused by adoption are extremely noticeable and should be taken seriously. These
unattached kids often experience unresponsiveness to affection, serious problems with hoarding or
stealing food, abnormal eye contact problems, often thinking about blood or fire, and are often
overfriendly to strangers (Adamec 73). Also identity and self image problems are a major cause of
distress to adopted children (Harnack 21). Counseling and therapy are highly recommended to help
kids deal with these disorders. Even though there are numerous negative stories about adopted kids,
there are also lots of success stories. Either way the adoptive parents are totally responsible for the
outcome of all situations concerning the child they decide to adopt. Families may have different
structures but they are all responsible for providing basic needs (Foster 99).
Adoptive parents and biological parents are both fully capable of providing all the basic needs. Some
people see adoption as a cruel decision an

Farmers Who Often Carry Guns And Run Prisons
The XPCC: Farmers Who Sometimes Carry Guns and Run Prisons
Faced with an alarming rise in Xinjiang violence over the last two years, Beijing is searching for a
high visibility, public solution. Most recently, officials attention has settled on the Xinjiang Production
and Construction Corps (XPCC), known informally in Chinese as bingtuan ( Corps ). While it has
been a martial organization in name and structure since its inception, the international media is getting
ahead of itself in playing up the military role played by Xinjiang s bingtuan. Controlling 700,000
hectares, almost 30% of Xinjiang s arable land, along with 2.6 million residents in its cities, the is first
and foremost a bureaucratic corporation.
The history of the XPCC goes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ebb and flow of political sentiment has left its mark on the structure and raison d être of the
XPCC. By the early 1970s, the organization had visibly suffered from its experience of the Cultural
Revolution, the only time the organization has ever been directly overseen by the army. In 1979,
however, the Soviets invaded Afghanistan and the latent threat posed by the USSR became more
active. Chinese leadership, newly recovered from the death of Mao, felt surrounded. Already in a
heated hearts and minds propaganda competition with the Soviets for Xinjiang s Muslim minority
groups, the importance of Xinjiang to the geopolitics of an isolated PRC suddenly crystalized.
In a decisive reversal that highlights officials sense of insecurity, the XPCC was restored in 1981
during a time when other border provinces bingtuan were being permanently abolished (such as
Hainan s, abolished just two years before).
Since the fall of the Soviet Union, the XPCC has continued to play a quiet but ubiquitous role in
Xinjiang s development. However, the circumstances surrounding the organization s reinstatement
does not mean that the post 1981 bingtuan was any more substantively militarily oriented than before.
Instead, its primary practical function increasingly became the generation of profits.
One of lesser known functions of the bingtuan is the large penal system it

Some say that it was the Illuminati trying to test their hologram machine. The alleged plan is to throw
a hologram into the sky of a God like figure telling us to go with the Illuminati just in a more sly,

influence the followers of Christ when the desired time comes. When this happens the most likely case
is that all of the non believers of Christ are already influenced and ready to follow them. Even in the
1970s people knew about this. John Todd was known for talking about how UFOs were part of the
Illuminati s plan. However, when it became well known he just mysteriously disappeared (Xendrius).
Is it just a coincidence he disappeared? Many think not. The government and the Illuminati have the
power to make anyone they want go away . To a large extent the Illuminati already have us wrapped
around their theoretical finger. So if you see a God like figure in the sky telling you to do something

date was the first sacrament that would lead you to this most important sacrament, your confirmation.
Your confirmation, Miss Maria, will lead you into the start of your adult spiritual journey for Christ, as
that will be the day the Holy Spirit descends upon you just as it did the first twelve apostles. Now you
will embark on the same spiritual journey as those first twelve men did, and you will have the chance
to express your love and belief of Christ to others just as Peter and those other first Catholics. You will
be able to tell your children and your grandchildren just what your journey into adult Christianity
means to you.

Virtue In Socrates And Menon
In Plato s Menon, Socrates and Menon discussed about the nature of virtue and whether it can be
taught. The definition of virtue varies a lot through the whole conversation. Even though Socrates and
Menon failed to reach a precise definition of virtue after spending amount of time and effort, their
arguments enlightened my idea that virtue consists in the ability to take the responsibility to good
purpose and a willingness to explore and learn. Virtue is not some sort of knowledge that can be
acquired by teaching or through predecessors, instead, being virtuous can be achieved by constantly
discovering and applying true opinions.
To begin with, being able to take the responsibility to good purpose consists a crucial portion of virtue.
Socrates firstly asked Menon the definition of virtue before figuring out if virtue can be taught. Menon
brought up several possible explanations, which, however, were rejected by Socrates. The first one is
that virtue is a specific thing among different people. To illustrate, for instance, for men, virtue is to be
good to friends and to harm the enemies; for women, virtue is to manage the housework and take care
of their family. However, this explanation only showed that various forms of virtue exist among
different people; Menon failed to clearly identify the virtue by pointing out how these examples can
share in common. From my perspective, even though people in the society may have different roles,
they all take responsibilities and make efforts to do their job. More importantly, what they do benefits
either themselves or society and does no harm others. For instance, thieves can not be virtuous
because even though they might make efforts to steal from others, they benefit themselves by
impairing people s interest and disturbing the social order.
Virtue does not consist in justice, instead, justice is one of forms of being virtuous. Menon later
modified his definition of virtue several times; he believed that virtue is the ability to rule with justice
and the ability to obtain justly. Socrates objected his answers because he used one term, which is
justice, to define virtue. From my point of view, being just, however, is only one aspect of being
virtuous. On the other hand,

Responding to the Wii Essay
Executive Summary
Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. has the unique distinction of being the first and only company to
have had market leadership for 2 consecutive console generations. However, in recent times, the
ecosystem has changed to include a larger audience and usability has trumped technological
superiority as a key metric in generating buyer interest. In 2008, Nintendo s Wii had 2 times the
market share that Sony s offering, the Play Station 3, had. I feel Sony should assess the following
options. (1) Focus on catering to its niche advance game segment and focus on leveraging its progress
form the previous 2 generations. (2) Respond to Wii onslaught by developing its previous generation
console to include a low end offering that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sony must focus on remaining in this unique segment and leveraging its perceived uniqueness as a
technology leader. Instead of competing on Nintendo s terms, Sony should not react but exercise
Ukemi by furthering its position in the serious gaming segment.
It is notable (From Exhibit 2b in the Responding to Wii case Harvard Business Review) that Nintendo
has been successful in keeping positive operating profits despite being a weak competitor during the
previous 2 generations. Nintendo has shown prudence in waiting out 2 battles and coming up with a
unique offering which has changed the way the market perceives gaming. Sony should concede defeat
this generation of gaming, while maintaining balance through strong service to existing market.
Sony should target the serious gamers and not react to Wii in terms of re assessing its differentiation
strategy.
The positioning question
While Sony is losing market share in the console market, it is winning the Battle for the living room
with Microsoft. With momentum gained from the previous 2 generations and technological superiority
of Sony s offering, Microsoft has taken a bigger blow, with almost double the operating loss of Sony.
(Sony operating loss of $1246.1 M vs Microsoft $2066 M, from Exhibit 2b in the Responding to Wii
case Harvard Business Review).
Sony has a broad offering in consumer electronics segment that it can leverage to provide a

Essay on Robert Nozick s The Experience Machine
As humans we are constantly in search of understanding the balance between what feels good and
what is right. Humans try to take full advantage of experiencing pleasure to its fullest potential.
Hedonism claims that pleasure is the highest and only source of essential significance. If the notion of
hedonism is truthful, happiness is directly correlated with pleasure. Robert Nozick presented the
philosophical world with his though experiment, The Experience Machine in order to dispute the
existence and validity of hedonism. Nozick s thought experiment poses the question of whether or not
humans would plug into a machine which produces any desired experience. Nozick weakens the
notion of hedonism through his thought experiment, claiming ... Show more content on

Nozick suggests, why should we be concerned only with how our time is filled, but not with what we
are? The truth is humans are not only concerned with what they do in life, but also with whom they
become and are. The human personality develops by experiencing true and real events that are not
resulted from a man made machine. We as humans have the ability to reason and understand life
differently than everything else in existence. Because of this understanding of life, we understand that
pleasure is not the only important thing to us. As human we have real life goals which need to be
experienced through reality, not through some stimulation of our brain. Nozick makes it clear the
pleasure is not intrinsically good because by denying this thought experiment, we are also denying
that all we need is pleasure to live a good life.
Nozick also discovers that humans would not hook up to this machine because it is a form of suicide.
Humans will never want to entirely reduce themselves to a man made realism. Nozick states, There is
no contact with any deeper reality, though the experience of it can be simulated . This statement
explains that humans need to experience a connection with reality because it has importance to all of
our lives. By humans agreeing to be plugged into this machine, they are indeed giving up who they
are, which in reality is giving up your life. This idea of choosing illusion over reality truly is a form of

The Rule of Law Essay
The rule of law is a difficult concept to grasp and proves elusive to substantive definition. However,
the following work considers the attempts of various social and legal theorists to define the concept
and pertinent authorities are considered. Attitudes and emphasis as to the exact shape, form and
content of the rule of law differ quite widely depending on the socio political perspective and views of
respective commentators (Slapper and Kelly, 2009, p16), although there are common themes that are
almost universally adopted. The conclusions to this work endeavour to consolidate thinking on the
rule of law in order to address the question posed in the title, which is at first sight a deceptively
simple one. The rule of law Modern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Slapper and Kelly postulate that: the rule of law represents a symbolic ideal against which the
proponents of widely divergent political persuasions measures and criticise the shortcomings of
contemporary State practice. (Slapper and Kelly, 2009, p15) These commentators concede that the
concept lacks precision and that its meaning changes over time. Noted legal philosopher Joseph Raz
accepted the necessity for State intervention in society and suggests that the rule of law is essentially a
means of controlling, limiting and shaping the exercise of discretion in this intervention, rather than
seeking to abolish it entirely (Raz, 1977, p195). Raz clearly appreciated the risks associated with the
arbitrary and uncontrolled exercise of discretionary power and envisaged the principle of the rule of
law as the primary safeguard against that threat. Many other writers appear to share the opinion
expressed by Raz that the raison d être of the rule of law is to control the exercise of discretion,
including Dicey, Hayek and Thompson, and to a lesser extent Unger and Weber. Dicey, for example,
in his highly influential magnum opus, An Introduction to the Study of the Law of the Constitution,
suggested that the rule of law is composed of three distinct and specific, but indivisible elements
(Dicey, 1885, p179 201). These are: 1. An absence of arbitrary power in the hands of the State; 2. The
supremacy of ordinary

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Goodnight by Dylan Thomas
Touching humans the most is the acceptance of unstoppable death. We all know that death will be our
fate some day, but how we accept or how we deal with it is left to each individual. Do Not Go Gentle
Into That Good Night, written by Dylan Thomas, emphasizes raging against death towards his dying
father as he repeats this exhortation in the last line in every stanza. Imagery, sound, metrics, and tone,
are used by Thomas to create the theme of his poem and what it means. Here is how the imagery of
the poem develops the meaning of the poem. First of all, Thomas convey resistance towards death

Thomas provokes these men into wanting more time and desiring the courage to fight back against the
Grim Reaper. The wise men and the wild men, regardless of character, deserves the opportunity to live
into old age and accomplish what they set out to do. And the wise men, who regret the fact that they
didn t do the good deeds they were set out to do, and realizing that it was too late for them to do it.
Thomas realizes it is human nature to take life for granted; until death approaches. Thomas wrote this
poem for his father, to tell him that there is so much more for him here, living, to do. The only way to
deter death is through fury and frenzy. Death comes too quickly for most people and only with rage
can death be defied. Here is a discussion of how the sound and metrics of the poem help convey that
meaning. In the face of strong emotion, the poet sets himself the task of mastering it in difficult form
of villanelle. Five tercets are followed by a quatrain, with the first and last line of stanza repeated
alternately as the last line of the subsequent stanzas and gathered into a couplet at the end of the
quatrain. And all this on only two rhymes. His villanelle repeates the theme of living and fury through
the most forceful two lines, do not go gentle into that good night, and rage, rage against the dying of
the light. Thomas further compounds his difficulty by having each line

Discuss Fritz Lang s Metropolis and Charlie Chaplin s Modern Times
Very few movies portray the relationship between the government and civilian masses during trying
moments such as Fritz Lang s Metropolis , and Charlie Chaplin s Modern Times . These are two
critically acclaimed films made in the late 1920 s and mid 1930 s. The time period captured is the
great depression, and examine the role of the governing authorities in relation to those governed.
Metropolis simply passes as one of the original science fiction movies in the world, and it has vivid
imagery in it. Its main themes revolve around cultural exploitation and political issues facing the
citizenry. It is set in Germany and tells the story of a metropolis where there are ... Show more content

side with them. They effects of mechanization are evident from the opening scene of this film where
workers are being monitored by machines in a factory lending credence to his view of human
enslavement by technology. At the time of making the film, America was going through high
unemployment rates, and corporate downfall as a result of the great depression. Hence, the idea of
saving money and time so as to amass huge profits came up hence the introduction of machines to
work on behalf of humans.
Many film critics have argued that these two films resemble each other even though they were
produced almost a decade apart. Both are about the suffering of the ordinary person in the hands of a
ruthless upper class. The ordinary man is seeking to live in a normal environment where there are no
controls, and work is not mechanized. They all talk about a future where machines take over from
human beings and do all the work. The machines even subdue the humans. In both films machines are
at the centre of businesses as they make work easier, and increase profits for the elite. Governments in
a capitalistic society do not control businesses. Furthermore, in both films the government is unable to
take care of the masses as the elitist control all the resources available.
In Metropolis , it represents a capitalistic society where only those with the means

How Did Ancient Greek Culture Influence Ancient American...
People come and go, but their work of art and ideas can flourish for eternity. Art makes history live
forever. It opens up doors to the past and wisdom to the future. Existence in this world currently, no
matter if it s a person or a thing, is all result of the past. Stuff doesn t just pop out of no where. History
is part of everything. Everything is a part of history. One of Rome s greatest philosopher, Marcus
Tullius Cicero once said, To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a
child. For what is the worth of human life, unless it is woven into the life of our ancestors by the
records of history. Learn from the past and fail less.

American s interest in ancient Greek culture develops when they sense that there s a connection
between them: ...the Greek War of Independence against Turkish domination aroused the sympathy of
our citizens, who saw in the Greek struggle for freedom a parallel to our own War of Independence
(Downs 173). The parallelism is that they both have experience of battling for freedom from a
controlling country. Another relation that makes the Americans appreciate the Greek culture even
more is the archeological discovery showing Greece as the birthplace of democracy: As the Greek
Revival style unfolded and developed in the United States it became as indigenous to the soil of our
system of law...and our democratic system of government, which was founded on the ancient ideal of
individual freedom (Downs 176). After studying and getting hold of the architectural idea and
vocabulary, Greek architecture soon becomes America s national style. The classical look of the Greek
architectural are made up of three primary orders: Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. Doric being the oldest
and simplest of the three: The Doric order is characterized by a plain, unadorned column capital and a
column that rests directly on the stylobate of the temple without a base...entablature includes a frieze
composed of triglyphs and metopes. The columns are fluted and are of sturdy, if not stocky,
proportions (Becker 1). The Doric is best describe as the most understated style with a masculine
appearance out of the three orders. Despite the simplest look of the Doric, it is the most popular. The
Parthenon, also known as the epitome of Greek culture, is built under the Doric order. Famous works
of the Doric order in the United States can be seen on the design of the Lincoln Memorial in
Washington D.C and the Justice Hall Building in New York City. Next is the Ionic: notable for its

The Importance Of Equality In The French Revolution
The French Revolution is a great example of how equality leads to peace and order; if the people of
France were equal during the time of the Revolution, there would not have been so much conflict and
reformation of government. I want to focus on equality because it is a topic that is dear to my heart for
many reasons and I firmly believe that the lack of equal rights is what fueled the French Revolution
and led to the violence and chaos that occurred during that time. Due to the Monarchy that the French
had at the time, citizens were under a feudal class system that kept their people from being equal in
government. This division between classes is just one of the things that aided the violence that
occurred during the French Revolution simply because people were not equal. No one was represented
in government and no power was distributed amongst the people; therefore, people felt they were
walked on and that their life was not as valuable. The imbalance of power drove people to violence
because the citizens of France felt this was the only way to make themselves heard. This is just one
example of how inequality led to the destruction of the society in France during the French
Revolution. The Feudal Class System and active and passive citizenship were the main contributors to
the lack of equality in France and that is why it fueled the French Revolution. The first issue that led
to the revolution was misrepresentation in government. This misrepresentation I m referring is

Radio Frequency Identification in Warehouse Management
Radio frequency identification in warehouse management
Introduction
Radio Frequency identification involves a small electronic device that has a small chip and antenna.
2,000 bytes of data can be carried by this chip. RFID devices give an object or product its unique
identifier, just in the same way that bar codes and magnetic strips which are placed behind credit,
ATM or debit cards. The data stored on the chip is only accessible when on scans the device and then
the information is captured on the computer. Though one needs to scan the RFID device to gain access
to the data, it is not mandatory that one places the scanner directly beside the chip. The chips can be
read from approximately 20 feet as it does not use line of sight. This gives RFID a greater advantage
over the other methods for automated data collection. RFID use radio waves to transmit a signal that
can be read by a reader thus enabling the chip to transmit information to the scanner which then
converts the data to machine readable information(Taghaboni Dutta Velthouse, 2006).
RFID devices can be semi passive, active, or passive. Passive devices are powered when
electromagnetic waves are sent to it thus inducing electric current to the devices antenna. Semi passive
devices use battery and waves that are sent from the scanner. Active devices use batteries to power the
chip in order for it to broadcast a signal to the scanner. Semi passive and active devices are mostly
used for goods that need to be scanned

The Scientific Revolution and Its Impact
Throughout the Scientific Revolution, scientists and natural philosophers created a new scientific
world by questioning popular ideas and constructing original models. During the 1500s and 1600s, the
concept of individualism, the principle of being independent and self reliant, began to be applied to
one s life. People began to have individual thoughts and started to disagree with commonly believed
ideas promoted by the Church. As this way of thinking expanded throughout Europe, scientists looked
to others for clarification and support on scientists ideas. Scientists needed the acceptance of others
and the money of patrons to spread their ideas and discoveries. During this era the work of scientists
were positively impacted by the views of society, the influence the church had over the general public
and the power held by political leaders.
The acceptance of science throughout society aided in the expansion of scientific ideas. Once the
general public recognized science, it became easier for scientists to communicate and build off each
other s ideas. During the scientific revolution, people in society looked toward their community for
reinforcement. Henry Oldenburg was a scientist, a philosopher, and the secretary for the English Royal
Society, a learned group of scientists. Oldenburg believed that scientists and philosophers should work
together to help science achieve its highest potential (Document 5). Even other members of the
scientific society believed

Another motivation behind why handgun bans neglect to ensure individuals is on the grounds that they
don t manage the main problem. The main problem behind handgun violations and savagery is not the
handgun itself, yet rather the proprietor of the firearm. As indicated by reviews, starting 2010, there
were approximately 300 million guns claimed by nationals in the United States. Of those 300 million,
roughly 100 million were handguns, and 67% of those firearm proprietors said they had weapons for
self protection, 66% said they utilized their firearms for chasing, and 41% for target shooting (Agresti

Western Influence On Chicanos
Moreover, in the 1990s, two terms were widely used to identify Spanish speaking people: Hispanic
and Latino. The term Chicano is perhaps the best example of this social process. Chicano appeared in
the mid 1960s as a political term of choice primarily among the young. The term identified an
individual actively promoting social change within the context of the social movements of the 1960s
and 1970s (Mendoza). In the past the term specifically referred to the unsophisticated Mexican
immigrants. However, to the generation of political activists, their term of ethnic identity came to
signify a sense of pride in their community and heritage. Unfortunately, the racial stratification that
was introduced during colonialism has in many ways significantly affected the self representation of
many of these ethnic groups, an example of this can be seen in the inequities of the race and class
caste system where Anglo Americans in the United States, Criollos of white Spanish descent are given
more privileges than the mestizas/os and Indians. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Summary Of The Film She ` S Beautiful When She s Angry
She s Beautiful When She s Angry, directed and produced by Mary Dore, is a film that documents the
struggles that women within the United States endure concerning the historical lack of women s
rights. Prior to the Women s Rights Movement in the 1960 s and 1970 s, a number of stereotypes
about women existed within society that limited both their personal and professional progression. She
s Beautiful When She s Angry a modern adaptation and documentary of this period of emotional strife

For example, at the height of the Women s Rights Movement, women were very rarely seen within the
sector of higher education; but today, however, women are more prevalent in higher education than at
any other point in recent memory. Not only has higher education become more of an integral norm for
women, but the increasing prominence of women within higher education is reflective of a
fundamental societal shift women are no longer being forced to stay within the confines of their home,
but are now able to focus on their education as well as their increasing job opportunities. Additionally,
women have also become more prominent within the political realm both in terms of running for
office and having the right to vote as well as the higher tiers of corporate America; which illustrates
that, as time goes on, they are becoming increasingly more powerful and are being afforded a myriad
of desirable positions and benefits that used to only be available for men. With the indisputable
progression of women in mind, it becomes challenging to comprehend how a film like She s Beautiful
When She s Angry can capitalize on its foundation of activism within the current societal climate.
Although there are still and may always be various opinions regarding women s rights, it is clear that,
since the Women s Rights Movement, women have been presented with countless opportunities that
they would not have been able to take advantage of approximately 50 years ago. As a result, a film
like She s Beautiful When She s Angry almost seems redundant, if not somewhat

Both of these returns are well ahead of our long term return target of spending plus inflation. The endowment increased $89 million in value during the quarter and now stands at $3,768 billion. Below is a summary of the changes during the quarter: Endowment millions Beginning Value $3,679 Investment Return 117 Spending (29) Ending Value $3,768 Spending during the quarter was made up of $xx million of grants, $x million of PRI s and $x million of operating costs. As a result, their current cash levels have climbed above 50% as the team patiently waits for an opportunity to put capital to work at more compelling prices. We also had excellent performance in our venture capital and private equity portfolio. Unlike Q1, where most of the Venture Capital and Buyout performance was driven by an individual portfolio company, Xiaomi, this quarter s performance was equally distributed among managers in both Venture and Buyout. Within venture, the US portfolio in particular enjoyed a strong quarter, led by mark ups at Great Hill, Atlas, and Arboretum. Most of these gains were unrealized, with the exception of Great Hill, which distributed $4 million to Kresge as a result of the sale of Latisys Holding, a data center service provider. The buyout portfolio also saw a mix of positive unrealized and realized gains in the quarter. Cabot Square s consumer finance platform in Portugal, BNP Credito, was marked up by $3 million in the quarter, while CD R distributed $4 million stemming from the successful sale of Envision Healthcare. Our hedge fund managers have struggled to generate high absolute returns in this environment with excessively low interest rates and frequent government market interventions. • 3. Social Hierarchies In Ancient Egypt, China, And India Hierarchies were used to describe the way past societies were structured, distinguishing one group of individuals from another. People were ranked into different groups depending on their occupation or wealth status. The richest or most powerful people were at the top of the social class while the underprivileged people or ones without great responsibility were ranked at the bottom. This system was widely spread throughout the world in many centuries. • 4. The Mandrill Primate And The Primate Writing Assignment: The Mandrill Primate For this assignment, I have decided to design an enclosure about the primate, Mandrill. I will, in words, describe an enclosure that will prevent these nonhuman primates from not being suited to their natural habitat needs. Throughout this assignment, I will design my very own version of a perfect enclosure that secures these primates by critically thinking of any psychological or physical problems that can occur. What also will need to partake is considering the perspective of the nonhuman primates, the zookeepers, and the visitors as well. Designing an enclosure has to be precise and detailed. I will do the best I can to be as detailed as I can be when designing this enclosure. First, to be able to design an enclosure, we must know a little about our species that will be in it. Well, the Mandrill is a type of primate of the Old World monkey family and are usually found in parts of South American, specifically Cameroon, Gabon, Guinea, and Congo (Wikipedia). The Mandrill is known for their colorful characteristics that vary in colors from blue to violet and also have a scarlet color alongside the bridge and end of their nose (Britannica). In my opinion, the mandrills are considered to be the most unique and interesting primates that I have seen and that are why I have decided to write about them. The mandrill is formerly grouped with the baboons. So, what happens to a nonhuman primate when the zoo enclosure does not suit ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Threat Of The Cyber Threat Since the onset of the first packet switching event that many believe to be beginning of the internet, no other technology besides the printing press has ever transformed the ability to deliver information. Although the internet is used by a large percentage of the civilized world, few Americans realize how vital cyberspace is to our national infrastructure. Today, we are faced with even more threats although it has been a recognized problem since 2009, when President Barrack Obama said The cyber threat is one of the most serious economic and national security challenges we face as a nation. It s also clear that we re not as prepared as we should be, as a government or as a country (Obama, 2009). Every industry that operates in the United States is dependent on the internet for some aspect of their business. Commerce, transportation, financial institutions, military, as well as industrial control systems are all interconnected. This interconnectedness has created vulnerabilities within their infrastructure that have increasingly become targets of terrorists, script kiddies, foreign governments and hackers of all types. Cyber attacks against Sony Pictures brought the vulnerabilities of poor cyber security policies to light. These attacks are nothing new but they appear to be getting more severe. According to James Clapper, the director of national intelligence, Cyber threats to U.S. national and economic security are increasing in frequency, scale, sophistication, and ... (Loomis, 1958) This fact meant that its bay would become a leading trade centre. A rush of people were attracted to San Francisco because of its port, the natural beauty and the gold rush, where thousands of people were brought in by ship. This lead to a shortage in water in all areas and transportation services had to be improved to provide enough water to all places. Chinese Food Culture Since the late 1800s, Chinese immigrants have come to our country bringing with them a rich culture, that not only included art and poetry but they brought with them their very unique style of cuisine. • 10. HR Technology Reflection Assignment 29. Your grandma is having her annual osteoporosis checkup, which includes an iDXA scan. Six months ago, she had a spinal fusion at L1 L3. Her clinician uses ISCD diagnostic criteria. How should the scan proceed? If her clinician used WHO diagnostic criteria, would you recommend the same scan procedure? The scan should proceed using the dual femur and the forearm. Her spine would not be the appropriate site to analyze. The dual femur and forearm should be used in this case because she has had surgery at L1 L3. The rods and screws from the surgery, would most likely generate higher T scores and Z scores, which will misdiagnose her analyzation. Moreover, her spine is not a good area to be scanned, due to her surgery. Therefore, the clinician should still use ISCD to generate a diagnosis. If the clinician used WHO I would still recommend using just the dual femur scan. WHO analyzes the femoral neck. Therefore, the forearm would not be needed for analyzation with this particular organization. 30. Compare the research article you found for the HR Technology Reflection Assignment to one of the articles we discussed in class in terms of results, methods, HR technology, and how the technology was used. • 11. The Pros And Cons Of Cyberbullying ccount and send damaging messages, pretending to be someone else online to hurt another person. Sexting, a circulating sexually suggestive pictures or messages, is reported that one in five teens have posted or sent sexually suggestive or nude pictures of themselves to others ( Cyber Bullying Statistics ). Taking unflattering pictures of a person and spreading them through cell phones or the internet. A statistic from the Harford County states that one in ten teens have had embarrassing or damaging pictures taken of themselves without their permission ( Cyber Bullying Statistics ). On Twitter, a social networking site, subtweeting is a new form of bullying. Subtweeting is the act of post a rude comment without the name of the person it is about (Hinduja). Usually the person who posted the tweet does not have the guts to tag the other person or say it to them in person. For example, a girl and a boy broke up and the boy went to twitter to express his feelings. He would post something emotional for the whole twitter world to see. In reality this, boy was talking about his old girlfriend and did not have the guts to say it straight to her. All age groups and genders are exposed to cyberbullying because of social media being available to all people. The age group that cyberbullying affects the most is teenagers. Teens are more likely to be involved with cyberbullying because adults have more to jeopardize. If adults would post unprofessional comments about their bosses online, the outcome would be getting fired. Adults have a better understanding of what correct behavior online looks like. Correct behavior online is referred to netiquette, or internet etiquette. Netiquette lists have the same behaviors people are to use in real life. The list includes politeness, courtesy, and respect. Rude behavior and inappropriate language is discouraged (Arazoza). Teenagers behavior online can also jeopardize their future. Over eighty percent of teens use a cell phone regularly, so that means that it is the most popular form of technology and an easy way to cyberbully ( 11 ). Teens are less aware of the consequences of posting online. Teachers and parents can be informed about the actions online and they can later judge that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. John P. Parker Essay His Promised Land: The Autobiography of John P. Parker, Former Slave And Conductor on the Underground Railroad. When we think of the conductors of the Underground Railroad many think of Harriet Tubman and her only, but if we study history carefully we will find out that she is not the only conductor worth mentioning. John P. Parker has to be one of the most underappreciated figures not only in African American history but American history in general. If everyone was aware of this true American hero s story, without question he would be a household name. The autobiography of John P. Parker is very well written and will have any reader on the edge of their seat throughout the entire book. The accounts of his experiences both as a slave ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was the first of many successful rescue missions. The next theme we will talk about will be cleverness. Mr. Parker was so clever that he could easily avoid authority as well as slave owners and even managed to convince a widow to purchase him from his master for $1,800 and was able to purchase his freedom from the widow in just 18 months by working in the iron foundry. John Parker was a very brilliant and clever man that lived a double life. By day he would work as an iron molder and by night he would take slaves across the Ohio River. He was a brilliant inventor with patents to a sugar mill, tobacco press, and soil pulverizer. Parker was a terrific businessman also. He was the owner of a foundry and blacksmith shop at a time when many black businesses were failing. The final theme that we will cover will be bravery. John Parker was very heroic and resilient. For almost fifteen years John Parker helped slaves escape to freedom as a conductor on the Underground Railroad. The dangers of getting caught helping slaves escape include jail time or even death. A good example of John Parker s bravery would be when he snatched a whip out of a white nurse s hand and began beating her because she was physically abusing her patients and Mr. Parker had had enough. This was particularly brave because no slave in their right mind would ever strike a white woman and still be around to talk about it. Perhaps the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. The Thing In The Apartment By John William Ross Since the first sound film in 1927, filmmakers employed tools to create sound effects and complete the illusion (Cavalcanti, 1939). The use of sound became essential to the quality of films, particularly in fiction where the audience seeks entertainment and thrill. Indeed, Rockett (1982) notes that music, background noises and sounds effects are the elements creating a particular mood or atmosphere. This theory is notably applicable to the horror genre, as its specificity is to incite fear and play on the viewer s nerves. According to Rockett, horror is indeed primarily a sound based medium (1982). Horror films sounds play with emotions, for instance with abrupt shifts up and down in pitch. As Gron states, these sound contrasts function as priming mechanisms , playing with spectators expectations of the scare (2013). These theories lead to the importance of recognising what makes an efficient sound track to frighten the audience. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Personal Identity, Ethics, Relation, And Rationality Parfit Student Name University Affiliation Course Code Derik Parfit is a philosopher from Britain who concentrates on issues of personal identity, ethics, relation and rationality. Parfit is of the argument that unless questions about identity are dealt with then it is not possible to tackle specific crucial questions like memory, responsibility and matters as survival. Personal identity is important as it helps in addressing certain vital questions. According to Parfit, survival does not require maintaining or preserving of identity but it is a common relation that needs pursuing apart from identity and the relation consider are those that deals with intentions and memory. Parfit argues that survival is a matter of degree unlike identity. In his argument he aimed at differentiating between identity and matters of survival. As for survival, whereby in his view it is possible for a person to survive as two, the original person s relation to that of each of resulting people is of great concern as it creates a sense in which a single person can survive as two. He assumes that if one s brain is divided into two and planted into new bodies; both resulting persons will possess the original person s character and memories of his life. On the other hand, as for identity it is a one one (is all or nothing) relation but matters in survival need not be one one. There are various reasons why people decide to adopt. Some say adoption is the best thing for certain children and many successful stories prove it to be true. However, there are also numerous tragic reports of adopted children being abused. Basically, what adoption meant, and still means, is that someone (the adoptive couple) is promising to assume all responsibilities for taking care of someone else (Powledge 4). How the adoptive parents go about raising the child is completely up to them. There have been many various surveys taken concerning adoptees. Times reported various horror stories concerning adoption. Some stories include children being poisoned, a child being shaken to death, and children being sexually abused (Gay 89). Unfortunately these are just a few examples of many. Adoptees often suffer from attachment disorders, which are more common in older children. These disorders caused by adoption are extremely noticeable and should be taken seriously. These unattached kids often experience unresponsiveness to affection, serious problems with hoarding or stealing food, abnormal eye contact problems, often thinking about blood or fire, and are often overfriendly to strangers (Adamec 73). Also identity and self image problems are a major cause of distress to adopted children (Harnack 21). Counseling and therapy are highly recommended to help kids deal with these disorders. Even though there are numerous negative stories about adopted kids, there are also lots of success stories. Either way the adoptive parents are totally responsible for the outcome of all situations concerning the child they decide to adopt. While it has been a martial organization in name and structure since its inception, the international media is getting ahead of itself in playing up the military role played by Xinjiang s bingtuan. In 1979, however, the Soviets invaded Afghanistan and the latent threat posed by the USSR became more active. Chinese leadership, newly recovered from the death of Mao, felt surrounded. Already in a heated hearts and minds propaganda competition with the Soviets for Xinjiang s Muslim minority groups, the importance of Xinjiang to the geopolitics of an isolated PRC suddenly crystalized. In a decisive reversal that highlights officials sense of insecurity, the XPCC was restored in 1981 during a time when other border provinces bingtuan were being permanently abolished (such as Hainan s, abolished just two years before). Since the fall of the Soviet Union, the XPCC has continued to play a quiet but ubiquitous role in Xinjiang s development. However, the circumstances surrounding the organization s reinstatement does not mean that the post 1981 bingtuan was any more substantively militarily oriented than before. • 23. Virtue In Socrates And Menon In Plato s Menon, Socrates and Menon discussed about the nature of virtue and whether it can be taught. The definition of virtue varies a lot through the whole conversation. Even though Socrates and Menon failed to reach a precise definition of virtue after spending amount of time and effort, their arguments enlightened my idea that virtue consists in the ability to take the responsibility to good purpose and a willingness to explore and learn. Virtue is not some sort of knowledge that can be acquired by teaching or through predecessors, instead, being virtuous can be achieved by constantly discovering and applying true opinions. To begin with, being able to take the responsibility to good purpose consists a crucial portion of virtue. Socrates firstly asked Menon the definition of virtue before figuring out if virtue can be taught. Menon brought up several possible explanations, which, however, were rejected by Socrates. The first one is that virtue is a specific thing among different people. To illustrate, for instance, for men, virtue is to be good to friends and to harm the enemies; for women, virtue is to manage the housework and take care of their family. However, this explanation only showed that various forms of virtue exist among different people; Menon failed to clearly identify the virtue by pointing out how these examples can share in common. From my perspective, even though people in the society may have different roles, they all take responsibilities and make efforts to do their job. More importantly, what they do benefits either themselves or society and does no harm others. For instance, thieves can not be virtuous because even though they might make efforts to steal from others, they benefit themselves by impairing people s interest and disturbing the social order. Virtue does not consist in justice, instead, justice is one of forms of being virtuous. Menon later modified his definition of virtue several times; he believed that virtue is the ability to rule with justice and the ability to obtain justly. Socrates objected his answers because he used one term, which is justice, to define virtue. From my point of view, being just, however, is only one aspect of being virtuous. On the other hand, ... Humans try to take full advantage of experiencing pleasure to its fullest potential. Hedonism claims that pleasure is the highest and only source of essential significance. Nozick suggests, why should we be concerned only with how our time is filled, but not with what we are? The truth is humans are not only concerned with what they do in life, but also with whom they become and are. The human personality develops by experiencing true and real events that are not resulted from a man made machine. We as humans have the ability to reason and understand life differently than everything else in existence. Because of this understanding of life, we understand that pleasure is not the only important thing to us. As human we have real life goals which need to be experienced through reality, not through some stimulation of our brain. Nozick makes it clear the pleasure is not intrinsically good because by denying this thought experiment, we are also denying that all we need is pleasure to live a good life. Nozick also discovers that humans would not hook up to this machine because it is a form of suicide. Humans will never want to entirely reduce themselves to a man made realism. Nozick states, There is no contact with any deeper reality, though the experience of it can be simulated . This statement explains that humans need to experience a connection with reality because it has importance to all of our lives. By humans agreeing to be plugged into this machine, they are indeed giving up who they are, which in reality is giving up your life. This idea of choosing illusion over reality truly is a form of ... (Slapper and Kelly, 2009, p15) These commentators concede that the concept lacks precision and that its meaning changes over time. Noted legal philosopher Joseph Raz accepted the necessity for State intervention in society and suggests that the rule of law is essentially a means of controlling, limiting and shaping the exercise of discretion in this intervention, rather than seeking to abolish it entirely (Raz, 1977, p195). Raz clearly appreciated the risks associated with the arbitrary and uncontrolled exercise of discretionary power and envisaged the principle of the rule of law as the primary safeguard against that threat. Many other writers appear to share the opinion expressed by Raz that the raison d être of the rule of law is to control the exercise of discretion, including Dicey, Hayek and Thompson, and to a lesser extent Unger and Weber. The parallelism is that they both have experience of battling for freedom from a controlling country. Another relation that makes the Americans appreciate the Greek culture even more is the archeological discovery showing Greece as the birthplace of democracy: As the Greek Revival style unfolded and developed in the United States it became as indigenous to the soil of our system of law...and our democratic system of government, which was founded on the ancient ideal of individual freedom (Downs 176). The Importance Of Equality In The French Revolution The French Revolution is a great example of how equality leads to peace and order; if the people of France were equal during the time of the Revolution, there would not have been so much conflict and reformation of government. I want to focus on equality because it is a topic that is dear to my heart for many reasons and I firmly believe that the lack of equal rights is what fueled the French Revolution and led to the violence and chaos that occurred during that time. Due to the Monarchy that the French had at the time, citizens were under a feudal class system that kept their people from being equal in government. This division between classes is just one of the things that aided the violence that occurred during the French Revolution simply because people were not equal. No one was represented in government and no power was distributed amongst the people; therefore, people felt they were walked on and that their life was not as valuable. The imbalance of power drove people to violence because the citizens of France felt this was the only way to make themselves heard. This is just one example of how inequality led to the destruction of the society in France during the French Revolution. The Feudal Class System and active and passive citizenship were the main contributors to the lack of equality in France and that is why it fueled the French Revolution. The chips can be read from approximately 20 feet as it does not use line of sight. This gives RFID a greater advantage over the other methods for automated data collection. RFID use radio waves to transmit a signal that can be read by a reader thus enabling the chip to transmit information to the scanner which then converts the data to machine readable information(Taghaboni Dutta Velthouse, 2006). RFID devices can be semi passive, active, or passive. Passive devices are powered when electromagnetic waves are sent to it thus inducing electric current to the devices antenna. Semi passive devices use battery and waves that are sent from the scanner. Active devices use batteries to power the chip in order for it to broadcast a signal to the scanner. Semi passive and active devices are mostly used for goods that need to be scanned ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. The Scientific Revolution and Its Impact Throughout the Scientific Revolution, scientists and natural philosophers created a new scientific world by questioning popular ideas and constructing original models. During the 1500s and 1600s, the concept of individualism, the principle of being independent and self reliant, began to be applied to one s life. People began to have individual thoughts and started to disagree with commonly believed ideas promoted by the Church. As this way of thinking expanded throughout Europe, scientists looked to others for clarification and support on scientists ideas. Scientists needed the acceptance of others and the money of patrons to spread their ideas and discoveries. During this era the work of scientists were positively impacted by the views of society, the influence the church had over the general public and the power held by political leaders. The acceptance of science throughout society aided in the expansion of scientific ideas. Once the general public recognized science, it became easier for scientists to communicate and build off each other s ideas. During the scientific revolution, people in society looked toward their community for reinforcement. Henry Oldenburg was a scientist, a philosopher, and the secretary for the English Royal Society, a learned group of scientists. Oldenburg believed that scientists and philosophers should work together to help science achieve its highest potential (Document 5). Even other members of the scientific society believed ... • 34. Handgun Ban Research Paper Another motivation behind why handgun bans neglect to ensure individuals is on the grounds that they don t manage the main problem. The main problem behind handgun violations and savagery is not the handgun itself, yet rather the proprietor of the firearm. As indicated by reviews, starting 2010, there were approximately 300 million guns claimed by nationals in the United States. Of those 300 million, roughly 100 million were handguns, and 67% of those firearm proprietors said they had weapons for self protection, 66% said they utilized their firearms for chasing, and 41% for target shooting (Agresti and Smith, 2010). Amid the year 2008, around 436,000 rough wrongdoings were conferred by an aggressor who was obviously conveying a weapon (Agresti ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Western Influence On Chicanos Moreover, in the 1990s, two terms were widely used to identify Spanish speaking people: Hispanic and Latino. The term Chicano is perhaps the best example of this social process. Chicano appeared in the mid 1960s as a political term of choice primarily among the young. The term identified an individual actively promoting social change within the context of the social movements of the 1960s and 1970s (Mendoza). In the past the term specifically referred to the unsophisticated Mexican immigrants. However, to the generation of political activists, their term of ethnic identity came to signify a sense of pride in their community and heritage. Unfortunately, the racial stratification that was introduced during colonialism has in many ways significantly affected the self representation of many of these ethnic groups, an example of this can be seen in the inequities of the race and class caste system where Anglo Americans in the United States, Criollos of white Spanish descent are given more privileges than the mestizas/os and Indians. ... For example, at the height of the Women s Rights Movement, women were very rarely seen within the sector of higher education; but today, however, women are more prevalent in higher education than at any other point in recent memory. Not only has higher education become more of an integral norm for women, but the increasing prominence of women within higher education is reflective of a fundamental societal shift women are no longer being forced to stay within the confines of their home, but are now able to focus on their education as well as their increasing job opportunities. Additionally, women have also become more prominent within the political realm both in terms of running for office and having the right to vote as well as the higher tiers of corporate America; which illustrates that, as time goes on, they are becoming increasingly more powerful and are being afforded a myriad of desirable positions and benefits that used to only be available for men. With the indisputable progression of women in mind, it becomes challenging to comprehend how a film like She s Beautiful When She s Angry can capitalize on its foundation of activism within the current societal climate. Although there are still and may always be various opinions regarding women s rights, it is clear that, since the Women s Rights Movement, women have been presented with countless opportunities that they would not have been able to take advantage of approximately 50 years ago. As a result, a film like She s Beautiful When She s Angry almost seems redundant, if not somewhat ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
