Essay On King Kamehameha
Effective Leader Essay Hawaii is now known as a tropical paradise, but it wasn t always so simple.
Thousands of years ago the islands were constantly fought over. Until one day, Kamehameha the
Great conquered all of the islands becoming Hawaii s first king. As Hawaii s first king, Kamehameha
led his own path. Kamehameha was an effective leader because he was intelligent, was an effective
communicator, and adapted to new ideas. One reason why Kamehameha was a good leader was
because he was intelligent in a way that others weren t. As sandalwood grew in popularity
Kamehameha knew he had to preserve the sandalwood trees for future generations. This led
Kamehameha to place a kapu on the young sandalwood trees, so they would be saved for the future.
This was one of the many new changes Kamehameha made to the islands. Placing a kapu on the trees
was a beneficial change because not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kamehameha traveled overseas to sell sandalwood, but soon learned he could not make a profit due to
port fees. Then all of the sudden Kamehameha decided to take the idea of port fees back to Hawaii.
This idea that Kamehameha brought back with him was a great change. With the idea of port fees, the
Hawaiian s made profits that benefited their communities. The port fees proved to be extremely useful
due to the fact that dozens of ships docked at Hawaii as a stopover.
Kamehameha was an effective leader because he was intelligent, he was an effective communicator,
and he adapted to new ideas. Throughout his rule, Kamehameha was able to achieve a profitable
business, a beautiful island, and a kapu to help future generations prosper. Therefore he was respected,
wealthy, and powerful. Kamehameha was able to bring peace to Hawaii in his time, and he created a
base for us to work off of. Without Kamehameha the islands would never have been pieced together

Essay about Golden Age Go
Go is a fascinating game that, although created in China, gained popularity and permanence in Japan.
Go planted its roots in the Heian Period and grew from there. The Heian Period, known as the Golden
Age of Japan, was a very stable time with the imperial court at the height of its reign, especially in its
early and middle years. Go provided a leisurely pastime and an opportunity for casual conversation
that was not only entertaining in a stimulating way, but at the same time maintained the cultivated
decorum of the ruling elite of the time which were among its most common players: courtiers. Since
Go s beginnings in the Heian court, the construct of decorum, the diet, and the dress of the court

Oh the other hand, it is still possible that Kibi sparked the popularity of Go in the court. However,
there are many aspects of Heian life that would have facilitated the acceptance of Go. Two unexpected
factors of the popularity of Go in the Heian court were the diet and the dress of the courtiers. The diet
of the court was poor, causing medical problems that stemmed from malnourishment; and it has been
speculated that the diet of the courtiers may have been at least partially responsible for the passivity
and pessimism that bulk so large in Heian history and literature (Shively and McCullough 398).
Because of this pessimism and lethargy that so plagued the court, it makes sense that a game like Go,
that requires no physical activity, became popular. The dress of courtiers would have highly restricted
movement, making pastimes that required activity very difficult and therefore impractical. The
members of the court wore ensembles that included in addition to [a] short outer jacket and long train
prescribed for women on formal occasions, as many as twenty or more identically cut robes... (Shively
and McCullough 395). Such an idea of extravagant dress is echoed in many the works of prose that
came out in the era. One example of a scene in which dress is commented on comes from The Pillow
Book by Sei Shōnagon that states ...one could see the varied colours of their many layered

Dawn Brancati Decentralization
Dawn Brancati furthered the literature around the decentralization of governments in her work,
Decentralization: Fueling the Fire or Dampening the Flames of Ethnic Conflict and Secessionism?.
She introduces a point that had not been explored before in academia, by showing a causal
relationship between regional parties and ethnic conflict/secessionism. She displays in her work that
political decentralization indirectly leads to ethnic conflict and secessionism. This is not inherent to
the structure of a decentralized government, but rather inherent to the political climate that
decentralization creates. This is because politically decentralized governments foster regional political
parties. She shows through a statistical analysis of 30 countries, that it is the power of regional parties
that ultimately increases or decreases ethnic conflict and desires for secession.
Her publication focuses on governments that are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her analysis of decentralization focuses on ethnic conflict and secessionism. Ethnic conflict is
violence between ethnic groups and secessionism is the movement of people towards an independent
state. The main focus of her paper is on regional parties within politically decentralized governments.
Regional parties differentiate from a national political party in that a regional party focuses their
efforts both in policy making and campaigning in a specific region within a state.
Brancati begins her analysis by posing the question, what impact does a decentralized government
have on ethnic conflict and secessionism? The conventional knowledge on the topic is that political
decentralization is believed to reduce ethnic conflict and secessionism in the world today...by bringing
the government closer to the people, increasing opportunities to participate in government, and giving
groups control over their political, social, and economic affairs. She believes in this statement to the
extent that

Many US consumers want their meals in a hurry, but with more service and higher quality food than in
traditional fast food restaurant. The result has been the rise of fast casual restaurant chains such as
Daphne s Greek Cafe, Boston Market and Panera Bread. The intent of fast casual restaurants is to
deliver a quality home cooked meal such as roast chicken, or fresh salad and bread in comfortable
setting and quickly. Many consider concept of fast casual to be a major restaurant niche that will be as
important as fast food, and perhaps even surpass it in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additionally, some people live and work in the small towns where fast casual restaurants have not yet
established and there actually the demand is very small for such restaurants because people live not far
from work and just go home during lunch break. Ukraine people also state that eating casual or fast
foods daily is not healthy since most of the meals in the restaurants are deep fried and can be a
problem to your health if daily consumed (Yunus, Zulkeflee, Razak, Ilias, 2013). Now about position
of Fast Casual restaurants compare to Fast Food restaurants. A fast casual restaurant is a new concept
in the restaurant industry. It combines concepts from the fast food and full service casual dining
restaurants. Some famous fast casual restaurants include Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG), Panera
Bread (PNRA), Noodles Company (NDLS), Potbelly Sandwich Works (PBPB), and Subway.
Several restaurants are focusing on changing their restaurants images by remodeling their existing
stores. Burger King (BKW), for example, has a goal to remodel about 40% of its U.S. and Canadian
market restaurants by the end of 2015. According to the company, its already re imaged stores have
boosted sales by 10% to 15%

Analysis Of Ask Me If I Care And Safari Essay
Women have a few common tropes in literature. Seen as submissive to men, and sexualized because of
it, women are presented as less than. While this has been strayed from a little bit in modern literature
with the engagement of queer writers, it is still very much the normal view of women, due to a society
in which the view on women is that of being less than. The short stories Ask Me if I Care and Safari
by Jennifer Egan both perpetuate this idea of women as submissive. Egan presents female characters
who only exist in the context of men, thus leaving them to be seen as inferior to the men. These tropes
of women in literature, and Egan s use of them, fit into the larger conversation: there is a degradation
of women in literature due to common conceptions of women in society.
Egan presents multiple female characters in Ask Me if I Care . The short story touches on a group of
friends, and in this group are the two characters of Rhea and Jocelyn both female. While they may
seem to be presented differently, Rhea as a not interested in being sexualized character and Jocelyn as
a sexualizes herself character, both ultimately play into the trope of submissive and degraded women.
Rhea, from the beginning, is portrayed as needing men: Still, if it s Bennie and me I hope for the back,
so that I can push against his shoulder in the cold, and hold him for a second when we hit a bump
(Egan, Ask Me ). While this may seem innocuous, it is the first introduction to Rhea. The very

Science Merit And Scientific Merit
Unit 10 DB 1 Concept of Scientific Merit Introduction As future scholars, we tend to hear a lot about
Scientific Merit. But, that same old question might pop in our mines, which is should this learner even
care or worry about scientific merit? We are told that without any scientific merit, that our research
that we have worked so hard on cannot be considered a valid research without it, and if we are at the
end part of our schooling/studies, and hope to receive an approval from the IRB for our research
proposal, that will not happen if it is missing. Therefore, within this paper, we will discuss scientific
merits, explain the dimensions of scientific merit, discuss the aspects of the study that was chosen for
the Scientific Merit, and choose an area of scientific merit that we could have improved. Scientific
merit Scientific merit is considered as a way to examine if our research study represents good science.
Therefore, we will need to make sure that any research we are working on, clearly states the research
questions and its overall objectives. The research should also include the contextual data that will also
have peer reviewed literature to support why the research is needed. We also should make sure that if
human beings are being used as participants, that their privacy and safety will be respected, and if
there is any possibility of harm, no matter how small it is, and the benefit and risks whether indirect or
direct for the partakers in the study needs to be very

Marijuana Laws Restrict The Growth And Use Of Marijuana
Marijuana is the dried leaves and female flowers of the hemp plant, used in cigarette form as [a]
narcotic or hallucinogen. ( Marijuana ) In the 17th century, marijuana production was encouraged and
supported by U.S. legislation. Later, during the 19th century,[marijuana] use became a fad in France
and also, to some extent, in the U.S. ( Marijuana Timeline ). During the 1920 s and 1930 s, the drug
raised fears linked with illegal immigrants and criminal activity. ( Marijuana Timeline ). Then, during
World War II, cannabis regained its popularity and support as Hemp for Victory ( Marijuana Timeline
). In the following years, the federal government created laws restricting the growth and use of

After extensive research on both sides of the issue, I believe marijuana should remain illegal in the
United States.
Some people believe that through the legalization of marijuana, our nation s tax revenue will
significantly increase. On the contrary, like many other drugs, such as alcohol and tobacco, taxation of
the drug will cost the nation money. For example, as stated by Marty Nemko, a psychologist and
career coach, knowledgeable on the effects of legal marijuana, states that legal pot does not yield tax
dollars, it costs tax dollars (Nemko). As with the taxation of alcohol and tobacco, tax dollars are not
increased as commonly thought due to the cost of dealing with addiction, driving under the influence,
and domestic abuse or illness. (Miller) Likewise, if marijuana were legalized, its accessibility would
cause a total loss in tax revenue. The Drug Abuse Resistance Education estimates legalization...[of
marijuana] would bring with it additional substance abuse in [states] and long term public costs... that
would vastly exceed the ... amount of new revenue legal weed might import. (Miller) The California
Board of Equalization estimates that treating the taxation of marijuana like alcohol or cigarettes would
result in a tax revenue increase of a dollar while the nation would be spending $8.95 for treatment of
marijuana drug abuse related cases (Miller) Since, the taxation of legal marijuana

Theme Of Equality In Harrison Bergeron
Equality, is a popular theme among the stories; Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, The Lottery by
Shirley Jackson, and The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. In each, the word equality is
used differently but all root back to the same diversity.
In the short story Harrison Bergeron , Vonnegut created a time where in 2081, total equality was
achieved among everyone. The people, were strictly ruled by laws created by the government. The
people who were more eccentric than others were assigned handicaps . Those who were more
intelligent than others wore radio earpieces, which would interrupt their thoughts every minute or so.
This would confuse them and make it hard to use their intelligence for anything. Also, those who were
more attractive than others, would wear masks to cover their faces. People who were athletically
incline, had to wear weights all day to weigh them down. 14 year old Harrison Bergeron, was the main
protagonist in the story who had his own beliefs and ideals. He thought that it was crazy, that for
everyone to be equal in society, they would have to sacrifice their mental or physical well being. He
encouraged everyone on live T.V. to take off their handicaps and be who they are. This was considered
breaking the law governed by Diana. However, things didn t go as he had planned. When Diana
finally understood Harrison s motives, she became enraged and executed Harrison. Equality in this
story ended up not being the best for society.

Power Of The Indian Ocean
Power Struggle 18. In the 21st century the interests and influence of China, India, and the US are
beginning to intersect and overlap thereby this region is bound to become epitome of international
conflicts and power dynamics. The presence of the three powers in the Indian Ocean is shown at
Appendix Q attached. The littoral countries are going to play a major role in the ongoing power
struggle because of their strategic locations. It is clearly evident that of the three most influential
countries, it is China who is making forays in the domain of other countries and projecting its power
in the far flung areas. The point to ponder is Is this Showcase of Power a Case of Expansionist China
or Is it Economic Necessity of China . In the present situation it is a mix of both. Before moving any
further it is vital to analyze the conflicting situation in the region. 19. In the case of China till now the
focus continues to be on the Pacific and not on the IOR with principal interest at this juncture in the
need to protect the Sea Lanes of Communications (SLOCS) along the Indian Ocean, vital for the
country s energy imports. The seaward drive of China can be attributed to the twin propellants of
geopolitics and economics . Off late China through its soft power diplomacy has begun to shape the
IOR strategic environment, by providing large loans on generous repayment terms and investing in
major infrastructure projects. In addition by offering military assistance and political

The Iroquois Political System
Even though the Iroquois and other Native American tribes had forged alliances with rivaling
European powers they were unable to maintain any leverage economically and militarily during the
Fur trade era. The introduction of the Dutch to North America happened by chance, as they were
attempting to locate a passage to Asia. Henry Hudson, an English sea captain working for the Dutch
came across the island of Manhattan in 1609 and sailed north on a river for 150 miles, later the Dutch
established a trading post along this river called Fort Nassau, later Fort Orange, North America, the

While not taking care of their land the other job the males of the Iroquois had was warfare and even in
battle with their enemies having superiors numbers over the Iroquois they were still able to defeat
many opponents. The Dutch were given some credit for the Iroquois success when they provide them
with weapons, but the Iroquois overall success lay in their ability to maintain unity and a far more
superior organization than any of their enemies. While militarily they formed a great force to reckon
with, it was their political system that made them even more a force in the early years of colonial
history. This system allowed for them to form a unified front against the new European threat that was
arriving in their lands. The Fur trade in North America began with the earliest contacts between the
Iroquois and Europeans. Within a few years the Iroquois and the Dutch and others were bartering their
goods with each other throughout the Mohawk Valley. In Europe there was a market for the furs and
endless supply in North America to fulfill this need. In time the Iroquois became so dependent on
these traders that they eventually gave up more and more of their own

Comparing Central Minnesota s City And Rural Life
Just Over an Hour Away
The city of Minneapolis, Minnesota is booming with life! With its convention center, night life noise,
busy highways, advertised attractions, and sports related events, the city life expectations satisfy both
visitors and residents. It is typical to assume that the high end activities and busy nightlife attract
political feuds and noise because they are located in the city. Nonetheless, this is not the case for some
of Central Minnesota s rural life found in places such as Riverview, Sterns County, Baker Township,
and parts of Saint Cloud. So, comparing Central Minnesota s city and rural life, where are peace and
beauty located?
There is a continuous political struggle between the acceptance of dairy farm growth and feedlot
growth midst some of the family owned businesses in the rural areas. Insomuch, the largest milk
producer wanted to invest about 55 million into a dairy feedlot last year, but regulators proposed
environmental concerns such as nitrate pollution in the water, manure smell, and large scale
confinement of farm animals claiming it interferes with the beautiful side of country living. This
family is known to have over 35,000 dairy cows currently working up to 22 hours a day giving them
the competitive edge. Although this may appear somewhat monopolistic, it does provide employment
opportunities for many as well as financial economic development for the entire State of Minnesota.

Petroleum And Natural Gas Exploration Essay
Executive Summary
April 20, 2010 was the beginning of the end for British Petroleum. BP was started in 1901 by William
Knox D Arcy. Their mission is to operate oil and natural gas exploration, while marketing and
distributing all over the globe. The primary issues the company faces are rebuilding their business
after the tragic oil spill, their low oil prices and internal leadership promotions. Following the 2010 oil
spill, all of BP s top executives were fired, and the company has continued to promote internally, as
recent as February of 2016. The company has been trying to rebrand itself and fix its disastrous public
image that resulted from the poorly handled oil spill. Due to these internal promotions, no new ideas
have been introduced into the company and their efforts in recreating themselves have since stalled,
leading to unmotivated employees and decreased profits. Although British Petroleum has solid
production sites in Gulf of Mexico, Alaska, and various areas of the U.S, the brand s name remains so
tainted from past violations. The declining price of oil, along with that environmental factors that
affect the company, both nationally and globally, have exacerbated this stall and caused the company a
major issue in recovering their public image, reputation, brand name, stock prices, and overall
prosperity. These factors have certainly not been beneficial to the company in recovering from the
sixty one billion dollars BP has had to pay as result of

Political Postcard Of Syracuse Cultural Workers By Randolf...
In the catalog, Syracuse Cultural Workers, a man named Randolf Smallwood created a political
postcard that could be seen as controversial. This postcard is meant to appeal to people with a critical
respective and it shows what their thoughts are about Conservatives. The artist uses bumper stickers to
portray the harsh truth what Conservatives support and what they believe in. Political parties often do
not agree on each other s views and this post card is an example of how they may bash each other to
show the points they disagree with. Using a bumper sticker was an interesting approach because many
people have them on their cars to show what candidate or party their supportive of, but these parodies
of bumper stickers reveal more than what they normally say. Everything on this postcard is placed
strategically and meant to portray a certain message. This postcard s main image shows a blue truck
with many colorful bumper stickers on the back of it. It is meant to represent the truthful way that
Conservatives think and what they believe in. We do not see the owner or driver of the truck in the

people. He does not drive a fancy, expensive car, but he then has a bumper sticker that says SAVE

Consumerism Worldview
There are many different types of worldviews that that are held among the countless people of this
world. Consumerism is one that is very prominent in this day in time. Consumerism absolutizes
consumption by believing that we can find fulfillment by accumulating wealth and everything that
comes with it. (Wilkins Sanford, 2009). There are many different elements of consumerism I will
discuss, along with how this worldview of consumerism compares with the Christian worldview, and
lastly, I will express how knowing what the Bible says about consumerism affects my life personally.
According to Wilkins and Sanford (2009), there are several elements of a consumerism worldview;
accumulating and using things brings fulfillment, money is power, we need just a little bit more,
people are viewed as objects to consume, and if something ceases to fulfill me or meet my needs it
should be discarded. With the idea that by accumulating and using things brings fulfillment, whether it
be fulfillment of material things or fulfillment of emotional needs, this worldview neglects to fulfill
our deepest emotional needs leaving us always desiring more to fill that void. Money is power leaves
people always striving to accumulate wealth so they can have power and control over situations,
because you are only important or significant if you have wealth. Also with the consumerism
worldview, we always feel that we need a little bit more, because what you already have is never
enough, due to material

Research Intervention And Prevention Programs
While earning my undergraduate degree, I had a formative internship experience as a visit monitor at a
court appointed family visitation center. I ensured that children could interact with their parent in a
way that was safe, appropriate, and healthy for the child s physical and emotional health. Each of the
families I monitored had histories of violence, neglect, substance abuse, criminal history, or parental
mental illness. I witnessed the resiliency and risk factors that affected the children these children, who
ranged in age from infancy to adolescence. However, I was impacted by the fact that many of these
children were not receiving the intervention services they likely needed to promote their social,
emotional, and academic growth, even though their family was recently and is possibly still in crisis.
While this was upsetting to me, it motivated me to pursue a career in developmental psychology
where I could impact children in need of effective intervention and prevention programs. Earning this
degree from Vanderbilt University would allow me to research intervention and prevention programs
that will promote positive social, emotional, and academic outcomes for children.
Another influential experience was completing my honors thesis project on personal growth of
students who were studying abroad. Studying abroad is widely acclaimed for its facilitation of
personal growth and for providing students experience with diversity. I wanted to find whether

Framing and Agenda Setting Bias in News Media Essay
Framing and Agenda Setting Bias in News Media
The Hutchinson Commission on freedom of the press best defined news in 1947 as a truthful,
comprehensive, and intelligent account of the day s events in a context which gives them meaning.
Journalism in today s news is not the same as it was over half a century ago. The Fairness Doctrine,
which was eliminated in 1987, was a policy that required the holders of broadcast licenses to both
present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that was, in the Federal
Communications Commission s view, honest, equitable and balanced. The Doctrine obligated
broadcasters to devote some of their airtime to discussing controversial matters of public policy and to

Media coverage reflects the media s agenda. The agenda setting theory predicts that people will place
importance on issues to which they are exposed. Agenda setting by the media tells us what to think
about public opinion about what should be on the public agenda is heavily influenced by the topics
and issues that appear in the news (Glenn G. Sparks , 2012). The type of news people select often
takes the form of opinionated entertainment rather than politically oriented information because some
of this information is simply not presented. All the reporters in the world working all the hours of the
day could not witness all the happenings in the world (Lippmann, 1922, p. 183). Limitations such as
distance, time constraints, and subjectivity challenge the media.
Controversy surrounding Kim Kardashian s pregnancy and the Paula Deen Scandal are both excellent
examples of agenda setting in action. The media is ever present for these stories as if they are
significant events. The placement of full page, color articles and top stories on news programming
makes it clear that Americans should place these events as important issues. There are numerous
articles and reports about Kardashian naming her child North West. There are news channels that
portray that Deen just made a mistake and is genuinely sorry for her choice of words while some
channels try to reveal that she really is racist and she only

Charlie Gordon In Flowers For Algernon
Ernest Hemingway once said, Happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know. For Charlie
Gordon, Hemingway s words hold more truth than anything he had been told throughout the course of
his story. Charlie Gordon, the main character of Daniel Keyes Flowers for Algernon, was a thirty two
year old man born with an unusually low level of intelligence. When Charlie was approached by a pair
of scientists with the proposition of undergoing a revolutionary surgery to increase his intelligence, he
readily agreed, thinking that the smarter he was, the more liked he would be. This did not, however,
seem to be the case. Charlie Gordon was happier when his I.Q. returned to sixty eight after the

of sixty eight, after the operation. Throughout the novel Flowers for Algernon, Charlie underwent a
serious transformation from an optimistic but dimwitted thirty two year old man with hope for the
future, to a cynical genius whose world was slowly beginning to fall apart, and then back to a happier
version of his original self. However, it is indisputable that Charlie was the happiest after the
operation, when his I.Q. had sunk back down to a measly sixty eight. His relationships thrived in light
of his recent life events, he was protected by the innocence and childlike naïveté of his mental state,
and his learning ethic returned to a need to know basis. Intelligence has always been something of
incredible value, so much so that mentally retarded Charlie Gordon was approached by scientists with
the proposition of artificially increasing his intelligence. However, Daniel Keyes Flowers for Algernon
is the story of the life of Charlie Gordon, and if Charlie s tale is capable of teaching the readers
anything, it is that sometimes one s intellect comes at the sacrifice of his or her livelihood. Perhaps

Multi Rural Tourism Through Zone Ⅰ And Zone Ⅲ
Through discussing the suggested developing scenario shaped 川 and the suggested development
strategies according to their axes, and the resulted areas, in addition to the expected growth in the
future which will achieve the balanced development between both the rural and the urban areas within
the coastal region On the one hand, and its integration with the Eastern back as a step towards the
overall national development, we come to the following conclusions:
A. The suggested scenario and the regional tourism toward an integrated rural tourism [ZoneⅠ Zone
Ⅲ]
As it was mentioned formerly, the coastal region on the first place is considered as a tourism region,
however; the tourism projects and investments focused in coastline, was what made the tourism
centered only on marine tourism away from the mountainous areas, nature quietness, open areas as
well as archeological sites, such as castle and forts that are scattered along the region, starting from the
coastline and till the mountains, the main reason is due to the unavailability of touristic infrastructure
and the needed services to promote touristic investment in this rural mountainous area.
That is exactly why the suggested corridor in zoneⅠ forms a new rural tourism industry, which will be
the main base to find the needed infrastructure through a highway supported by a metro line as a
backbone which forms the main physical structure for the corridor and what comes alongside; like

Fire Department Pros Analysis
Introduction
After several years of a hiring freeze, the Fire Department(FD) is seeking to expand its firefighting
personnel ranks by recruiting approximately 1000 candidates to be eventually hired. Currently, the
Fire Department is predominantly male Caucasian of either Irish or Italian descent in a long history of
dedicated fire fighters which goes back generations. Contrastingly, a significant number of minorities
have been unable to meet the expectations of the FD s outdated recruitment practices which lack
standardized procedures hence, few minority (women, African Americans, Hispanics) firefighters.

Specifically, neutral policies or practices that unevenly or unfavorably effect any protected class
qualifies as employment discrimination (EEOC, n.d.).
In the past, women outperformed all candidates in exams despite failing the physical exams.
Ultimately, more white candidates dominated the civil service list from where appointments came for
years, the few minority candidates that passed never made the hiring list and women were have never
been hired. Based on the FD s statistics, there is compelling evidence indicative of both racial and
gender discrimination against racial minorities and women, in recruitment, testing, selection, hiring
and promotion to support the disparate impact theory (Guerin, n.d.). Therefore, as a representative of
the city, it is my recommendation that the FD cease and desist from sole use of word of mouth
recruitment and the continued use of flawed essay based exams as this would prove a pattern of non
compliance with EEOC along with potential legal recourse (U.S. Department of Justice, 2015, p. 2).
Recruitment campaign improvement recommendations

and Fire Commission representatives. Following a literature review section of an International
Association of Firefighters (IAFF) study, it was concluded that the best recruitment technique for
minority recruitment was targeted recruitment consisting of the following (Fox, Hornick,

Odessa wasn t even integrated until the early 1980s. Even after it was integrated, the district lines were
drawn so that Permian would get most of the black students and Odessa High would get the Mexicans
students (105). Even with Permian getting the majority of African Americans, there were only six
black players on the team. Of those six, five of them started and one of them was injured (107). The
black players at Permian were usually regarded as the best on the field. Even so, most coaches still
considered them a lower class. Even Nate Hearne, a black coach that usually dealt with the black
players, described Boobie as just another dumb nigger if he couldn t carry a football under his arm
(18). The racism wasn t just within the town and the team, it was affected other teams Permian played.
When it came time to play the Carter Cowboys in the quarterfinals, a meeting had to be set up to
discuss the terms of the game. This was mostly due to racism since over 90% of the Carter school was
African American. The Permian coaches argued over where the game would be held. A neutral
location was chosen for the safety of the fans. After the final pass of the game, player Clint Duncan
knew it was incomplete when he looked up and saw a bunch of cocky niggers jumping up and down

The Trial By Franz Kafka
In The Trial by Franz Kafka, the protagonist K. is going through what is often thought of as one of the
most dehumanizing aspects of society. Even in the United States many criticize the justice system for
being dehumanizing. People are forced to wear the same thing, act the same way, and are given
numbers instead of names. In The Trial Kafka emphasizes the dehumanizing aspects of this process by
exacerbating the bureaucratic steps that must be accomplished and adds more uncertainty and secrecy
to the steps. Kafka s writing shows the lack of information that K. is given, and the symbolic
dehumanization that occurs during the whipping and with K. lacking a last name. The actual steps K.
must take to clear him name is always kept secret. K. is always kept ignorant of his charges, of what
he must do, of what the outcome will be, or of what will happen next. As early as page 3 K. is kept in
the dark. When he originally asks what he is being charged with he is told We are not authorized to tell
you that, (3), he is then promised that he will be informed everything in due course, (3). K. is kept in a
total state of ignorance throughout the entire novel. He is constantly introduced to new people who say
that they can help him, but he is never given clear answers, he is just shown false hope. At no point
does he make any real progress in his case. He is always chasing information, just to find out that he

Spinoza is psychological and ethical egoist.
Born in 1632 Bruch Spinoza was a descendent of the Portuguese Jewish community. After much
harassment and ill treatment by the Portugal, his family fled to Amsterdam. The unique Jewish
community in Amsterdam comprised of the people originally from Spain, Portugal and France who
had the urge to practise their inherited faith freely. As a pupil of the congregation, Spinoza received
education that deemed necessary as a Jew. This included Hebrew, liturgy, Torah, prophetic writings,
and rabbinical commentaries. Even though, he excelled as a student, he left school whether by
necessity or by desire and went onto to work in his father s business. The advantage of having an open

This ambitious multifaceted work is proved bold to the point of audacity. It tries to show that ethical
truths have the same logical necessity as the mathematical truth. The truth about God, nature, self,
religion and good life is well presented in the five sub divisions of Ethics. Although metaphysics,
physics, anthropology and psychology take most of the first three divisions, the crucial message of
work to be ethical in nature is well conveyed. I believe the motive behind Spinoza s work is to show
that happiness does not lie in superstitions that are interpreted as religion but rather in the life of
reason. He goes on to explain this transition, in the five parts each consisting of definitions, axioms

Strengths And Weaknesses Of Immanuel Kant
Born in 1724 Immanuel Kant was a German philosopher whose work is considered to be the highlight
of modern philosophy. His work impacted ethics in a very big way. The fact that his writing is among
the most difficult to understand Kant believed the reason for this was the source of morality, and his
Critique of Pure Reason. Kant s theory, better known as deontological theory holds truth in believing
that doing the right thing and good will are motivating factors in the ethical decision making process.
His theory is an example of deontological theory but with several weaknesses as well as strengths. I
believe that lying is wrong just like Kant but I don t agree that lying for the right reasons makes you a
bad person. Kant s theory is an example of a deontological moral theory. According to these theories,
the rightness or wrongness of actions does not depend on their consequences but on whether they
fulfill our duty. Kant believed that there was a supreme principle of morality, and he referred to it as
The Categorical Imperative (CSUS, 2012). A great example of Categorical Imperative would be Don t
lie even though you might be lying to benefit the other person it doesn t matter you shouldn t lie
because it s the wrong thing to do. Kant believed that in order to act in a morally correct manner
everyone should act from duty. He also believed that it wasn t the consequences of a person s actions,

showing the particular actions or traits/ emotions of a person. She also uses imagery to help give the
reader a better understanding to the scenario. 1 example of a descriptive writing style in her book on

Should There Be Stricter Gun Control Laws In The United...
Guns or No Guns
INTRODUCTION:
The role guns play in our society has long been debated on whether or not citizens have the right to
own guns. There are those who believe that guns have no role in the hands of private citizens.
Whereas there are those who believe that guns are the very foundation that protects our rights and
liberties expressed in the Constitution. The debate is over whether or not there should be stricter laws
preventing people to own guns. Though gun control and gun rights advocates share similar views on
background checks and requirements, each have different views on the safety of guns and the Second
Amendment meaning.
Safety: CONTRAST
Both sides of gun control advocates believe that the safety of American citizens is the most important
thing within the argument of the ban of guns, but they both have different views on how it should be
handled.
No Guns:
Some people believe that the United States is safer when citizens are not allowed access to guns. The
amount of organized crime would go down because all of their power is derived from their use of
firearms and that is a significant amount of their profit. Gun control laws protect children and families;

Despite being one of the most accepting countries in the world, Canada is no exception. Since

mainly the French and English community residing in Canada. Although both groups belong to the

Afirmaciones-Spanish Essay
###appears to be rough draft of essay 384065 Spanish###¿Cabe hacer alguna distinción entre las

Business Meeting Etiquette
Basic Meeting Etiquette
Abstract Meeting etiquette involves all participants and the leader having respect for each other.
Meetings should be purpose driven and focused. The leader establishes the direction and purpose the
listeners should be prepared to follow along or to provide inputs to that goal. By following etiquette
appropriate for the meeting setting, more resolutions may be accomplished in the allotted time. In a
perfect world, a group synergy may evolve to increase productivity.

Do not interrupt interaction between group members as long as it is productive. However, direct away
from counterproductive inputs or negativity. The first responsibility is to be organized.
The group Leader, the person scheduling the meeting, and expected to chair the group, should provide
communication in the form of an Email or memo. The contents should state why the meeting is being
held, potential discussion and brief agenda. This correspondence with a few individuals along with
group announcements of what is going on and when the meeting is will give respect to the attendees
and give them time to formulate any inputs that they may have to offer.
The group leader should continue to be an example of business etiquette by being on time for the
meeting. Not only on time, but arrive a little early for the meeting to set up and go over the materials.
To make sure one is well prepared for the meeting before the attendees start arriving. This includes
having all materials, power point presentation as well as all equipment needed for the meeting.
Running around at the last second to get things set up is impolite. Preparedness demonstrates a respect
of others. When a leader is ready and well prepared, the meeting will flow well.

French Indian War Essay
The French and Indian War
The French and Indian war raged from 1754 to 1763. Its roots began long before the first shot was
fired, about 100 years before between the French and the English. The French and Indian War was not
fought between the French and the Indians, but the two allied with the Canadians against the English.
It was the catalyst for the Seven Years War, from 1756 1763, which was brought over into Europe, the
Carnatic Wars, and it eventually lead to the American Revolution.

The always present Indian problem added to England s decision to send two regiments of troops to
protect the colonizers. When the French heard word of this they too sent several regiments of troops to
protect the frontiersmen and settlers in their territory in New France. Peace talks in England soon
began between the French. The commander of France s troops was Baron de Dieskau who was under

a larger force than Major Washington to make war with the French on the frontier. The French being
well aware of their surroundings, made good use of it while ambushing the English as they marched in

attack, killing many of the English soldiers and causing the to retreat. The English never faught in a

Franz Joseph Haydn was from Austria and writer: he stood out among the most productive and
conspicuous authors of the Classical time frame. Haydn composed 107 ensembles altogether and also

Ludwig van Beethoven, and his melodic frame throws a significant shadow over the music of
consequent authors, for example, Schubert, Mendelssohn, and Brahms.

relaxed by watching or interacting with the entertainment and the Olympics. The competitions were
varying from swimming to playing board games; to attending theatre performances, athletics and
forms of entertainment appreciated by Romans in ancient times weren t much different from those
today.
A couple of the sports and entertainment played and watched by the Ancient Rome are followed:

played a wide variety of board games, including dice, Knucklebones Roman Chess (Latrunculi),

Entertainment: There were several other activities to keep the people of Rome content and to prevent
uprisings, such as chariot races at the Circus Maximus, musical and theatrical performances, public
executions, beast hunts, and gladiatorial combat. Rome s most famous ampitheatre, the Colosseum,
could accommodate up to 50,000 spectators. There are also accounts of the arena being flooded to
hold naval battles (called Naumachia) for the public to watch. These forms of entertainment, all of
which were massive public spectacles, were a distinct and important part of ancient Roman culture.

The 1st time recorded festivity of the Games in Olympia was about in 776BC, although this was
surprising not the very first time they were held. History says that the Romans commanded that only
one event was contested in this early event, a sprint, called the stade , and it is sure that many changes
have occurred in the Olympic games since its commencement; Roman influence, reintroduction and of
course its wide ranging status as it is today. Of course, with certain traditions have remained the same.

The Case Of Buffalo For Real
The narrative that gets told about a city influences public policies, economic development initiatives,
and even civic morale and engagement. For example, in the case of Buffalo, pervasive myths about
high property tax rates have influenced the public s perception about the funding of public programs
and fed the desire for irresponsible tax cuts. Similarly, stories that fail to acknowledge issues of
poverty, inequality, and segregation marginalize certain groups and hinder constructive dialogue on
how to fix these issues. Many of the solutions previously proposed to make Buffalo prosper, assumed
that the city was in dire straits. While it is true that Buffalo had been hit by hard times, haphazard
attempts at economic developments only exasperated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 2010, the poverty rate was 29.6% and the unemployment rate is currently 12.4%. In addition, most
of the poverty is concentrated on the west side and the east side. These issues have been compounded
by a dwindling population as many choose to avoid the inner city poverty in favor of living in the
surrounding suburbs. With that being said, Buffalo has many underutilized or unrecognized resources.
First, Buffalo has access to the Great Lakes. As water scarcity becomes a more pressing issue, the
Great Lakes will become an even more valuable resource. Buffalo needs to recognize the value of this
resource and stop dumping raw sewage into the water. Second, the city is located near Niagara Falls,
one of the biggest tourist attractions in the world. The only problem is that Buffalo doesn t have as
many attractions to keep tourist in the area for a longer period. Also, its rich past has endowed it with
magnificent architecture and historic landmarks. By accentuating these locations, Buffalo could
increase its tourism traffic. The economic situation in Buffalo has been bleak, but its proximity to
Toronto could lead to a resurgence if the city s prime location is utilized. By taking stock of the
resources that it has at its disposal, Buffalo can change the narrative about its future

Antecedents Of Environmental Pollution
An environmental pollutant: Smog
Smog is fundamentally gotten from the converging of two words; smoke and haze. Smog is likewise
used to portray the sort of mist which has smoke or sediment in it. Smog is a yellowish or blackish
haze framed principally by a blend of poisons in the climate which comprises of fine particles and
ground level ozone. Smog which happens principally on account of air contamination, can likewise be
characterized as a blend of different gasses with tidy and water vapor. Smog additionally alludes to
foggy air that makes breathing troublesome.
The environmental contaminations or gasses that shape smog are discharged noticeable all around
when powers are copied. Whenever daylight and its warmth respond with these gasses and fine
particles in the environment, smog is framed. It is simply caused via air contamination. Ground level
ozone and fine particles are discharged noticeable all around because of complex photochemical
responses between unpredictable natural mixes (VOC), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides
(NOx). These VOC, SO2 and NOx are called antecedents. The fundamental wellsprings of these
antecedents are toxins discharged straightforwardly into the air by gas and diesel run vehicles, modern
plants and exercises, and warming because of human exercises.
Smog is regularly caused by overwhelming movement, high temperatures, daylight and quiet winds.
These are few of the variables behind expanding level of air contamination in climate. Amid

Evidence Asimov Analysis
Robots coexisting in the human world can be beneficial to many people s lives by allowing tasks to be
performed at a much faster rate. By Google definition robots are machines capable of carrying out a
complex series of actions automatically, especially one programmable by a computer; (especially in
Science Fiction) a machine resembling a human being and able to replicate certain human movements
and functions automatically. Many people think of robots as metal machines that come in various
shapes and sizes; not machines that look and act in such ways like a human. Robots and other alike
machines are widely used across the globe. In factories, schools, homes, hospitals... Whilst technology
grows, the need for these complex machines becomes much greater. These machines are able to
perform tasks at a much greater speed, accuracy, and complexity compared to manual labor. In
Asimov s short story Evidence, a man by the name of Stephen Byerley was in a horrific accident that
should have resulted in his death. When Stephen runs for mayor, Frances Quinn, his runner up, claims
that the real Stephen Byerley, rather than having recovered, was permanently disfigured and crippled
by the accident, and the Byerley who appears in the public is a humanoid robot, created by Stephen
Byerley. Asimov mentions the Three Laws of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I do not believe that the short story, Evidence, is accurate in its depiction of society s treatment of
robots. In the research we have seen thus far, the acceptance of robots in today s society is almost
unknown due to the fact that many people do not realize they amount of robotics that they already use
in their daily lives. Robots are a very beneficial thing, and I do not believe that we need a set of laws
like Asimov s to govern the behavior of robots as they become more advanced... Robots can be people

the narrator was irritated. The narrator was more harsh to Doodle so he doesn t have to take care of
Doodle, consequently Doodle still wanted to be with his brother. The narrator decided to teach Doodle
to walk so he doesn t have to carry him everywhere. Hurst s characterization of the narrator shows that
pride is linked to shame and embarrassment. This characterization is reveal when the narrator tries to

The beginning of the story was when the narrator tries to kill Doodle because he was ashamed. The
narrator is revealed that he is embarrassed of having a disabled brother and was willing to kill Doodle
because he was crippled. The event is linked to the theme because the narrator s pride towards Doodle
was because of embarrassment of Doodle being crippled. Doodle was born with a big head and his

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Special Needs Pupils
In Rantsu the approach for the special needs pupils is different from the other two analysed schools:
they have special classes, some of them are stable, others are used just in some periods.
The decision to make special classes can be based on the presence of serious cases of disabilities or
can be a way to help these special needs pupils to have a more personalized study path.
Even if it could be a good method to teach them, it could be dangerous to isolate these pupils from the
others. The other pupils will not face the presence of them, and these pupils will not be pushed to
communicate to the others, that will be necessary in their future life.
There are pros and cons in this approach and it s hard to define a line between help and exclusion.

The most interesting method used by the teacher was to follow the pupils knowledge to build the
lesson together. In that way pupils were completely involved in the explanation and they were all
active. The teacher used in a clever way the web, searching on it whatever pupils came up with, giving
them more information about their topics and images of them. This method is not often used in Italian
schools, where the most common method is sadly still the traditional lesson. It will be really necessary
to change it and take Finland as an example for it.

The Tscan Sun
In Under the Tuscan Sun, Frances Mayes s account of her restoration of an abandoned house in the
Tuscan countryside blends autobiography with plenty of description and a determined attempt to get

first sentence of this travel book is I am about to buy a house in a foreign country (p. 151), which is
able to give a sense of the concerns of the book as a whole. The action of buying a house in Italy is the

Along with the dramatic demise of Motorola s mobile phone business in the past two years,
Soundbuzz now also faces closure of its own. It s an ironic end for a company that seemed ahead of its
time when it came out selling legit music in 1999 at the dawn of illegal downloads. Many were
surprised at the time, when Soundbuzz CEO Sudhanshu Sarronwala, a former MTV stalwart, managed
to court the music labels even when they were more interested in blocking people from ripping CDs.
Its music collection was built up very fast, providing users in Singapore with a legit alternative to
pirated songs. But soon, the competition came for Suds and his company. Though Apple iTunes is still
not officially here in Singapore now, Nokia has recently launched its music store here. And Sony
Ericsson too, has partnered SingTel to offer a direct to mobile music download service. Soundbuzz,
meanwhile, was a much smaller player and had a less extensive music collection. Plus, it somehow
only supported the Internet Explorer browser, likely because of its Windows Media back end, which
kept out a lot of users. The final nail in the coffin must have been its sale to Motorola, a company that
invented the cellphone and won millions over with the iconic Razr phone, but somehow still managed
to lose direction in its cellphone business thanks to poor management and decision making. Before
Soundbuzz shuts its store, it advises users to download and back up all the stuff they bought. Users

Until one day, Kamehameha the Great conquered all of the islands becoming Hawaii s first king. As Hawaii s first king, Kamehameha led his own path. Kamehameha was an effective leader because he was intelligent, was an effective communicator, and adapted to new ideas. One reason why Kamehameha was a good leader was because he was intelligent in a way that others weren t. As sandalwood grew in popularity Kamehameha knew he had to preserve the sandalwood trees for future generations. This led Kamehameha to place a kapu on the young sandalwood trees, so they would be saved for the future. This was one of the many new changes Kamehameha made to the islands. The port fees proved to be extremely useful due to the fact that dozens of ships docked at Hawaii as a stopover. Kamehameha was an effective leader because he was intelligent, he was an effective communicator, and he adapted to new ideas. Throughout his rule, Kamehameha was able to achieve a profitable business, a beautiful island, and a kapu to help future generations prosper. Therefore he was respected, wealthy, and powerful. The Heian Period, known as the Golden Age of Japan, was a very stable time with the imperial court at the height of its reign, especially in its early and middle years. Go provided a leisurely pastime and an opportunity for casual conversation that was not only entertaining in a stimulating way, but at the same time maintained the cultivated decorum of the ruling elite of the time which were among its most common players: courtiers. Oh the other hand, it is still possible that Kibi sparked the popularity of Go in the court. However, there are many aspects of Heian life that would have facilitated the acceptance of Go. Two unexpected factors of the popularity of Go in the Heian court were the diet and the dress of the courtiers. The diet of the court was poor, causing medical problems that stemmed from malnourishment; and it has been speculated that the diet of the courtiers may have been at least partially responsible for the passivity and pessimism that bulk so large in Heian history and literature (Shively and McCullough 398). Because of this pessimism and lethargy that so plagued the court, it makes sense that a game like Go, that requires no physical activity, became popular. The dress of courtiers would have highly restricted movement, making pastimes that required activity very difficult and therefore impractical. The members of the court wore ensembles that included in addition to [a] short outer jacket and long train prescribed for women on formal occasions, as many as twenty or more identically cut robes... Dawn Brancati Decentralization Dawn Brancati furthered the literature around the decentralization of governments in her work, Decentralization: Fueling the Fire or Dampening the Flames of Ethnic Conflict and Secessionism?. She introduces a point that had not been explored before in academia, by showing a causal relationship between regional parties and ethnic conflict/secessionism. She displays in her work that political decentralization indirectly leads to ethnic conflict and secessionism. This is not inherent to the structure of a decentralized government, but rather inherent to the political climate that decentralization creates. This is because politically decentralized governments foster regional political parties. She shows through a statistical analysis of 30 countries, that it is the power of regional parties that ultimately increases or decreases ethnic conflict and desires for secession. Brancati begins her analysis by posing the question, what impact does a decentralized government have on ethnic conflict and secessionism? The conventional knowledge on the topic is that political decentralization is believed to reduce ethnic conflict and secessionism in the world today...by bringing the government closer to the people, increasing opportunities to participate in government, and giving groups control over their political, social, and economic affairs. • 8. Analysis Of Ask Me If I Care And Safari Essay Women have a few common tropes in literature. Seen as submissive to men, and sexualized because of it, women are presented as less than. While this has been strayed from a little bit in modern literature with the engagement of queer writers, it is still very much the normal view of women, due to a society in which the view on women is that of being less than. The short stories Ask Me if I Care and Safari by Jennifer Egan both perpetuate this idea of women as submissive. Egan presents female characters who only exist in the context of men, thus leaving them to be seen as inferior to the men. These tropes of women in literature, and Egan s use of them, fit into the larger conversation: there is a degradation of women in literature due to common conceptions of women in society. Egan presents multiple female characters in Ask Me if I Care . The short story touches on a group of friends, and in this group are the two characters of Rhea and Jocelyn both female. While they may seem to be presented differently, Rhea as a not interested in being sexualized character and Jocelyn as a sexualizes herself character, both ultimately play into the trope of submissive and degraded women. Rhea, from the beginning, is portrayed as needing men: Still, if it s Bennie and me I hope for the back, so that I can push against his shoulder in the cold, and hold him for a second when we hit a bump (Egan, Ask Me ). • 10. Science Merit And Scientific Merit Unit 10 DB 1 Concept of Scientific Merit Introduction As future scholars, we tend to hear a lot about Scientific Merit. But, that same old question might pop in our mines, which is should this learner even care or worry about scientific merit? We are told that without any scientific merit, that our research that we have worked so hard on cannot be considered a valid research without it, and if we are at the end part of our schooling/studies, and hope to receive an approval from the IRB for our research proposal, that will not happen if it is missing. Therefore, within this paper, we will discuss scientific merits, explain the dimensions of scientific merit, discuss the aspects of the study that was chosen for the Scientific Merit, and choose an area of scientific merit that we could have improved. Scientific merit Scientific merit is considered as a way to examine if our research study represents good science. Therefore, we will need to make sure that any research we are working on, clearly states the research questions and its overall objectives. The research should also include the contextual data that will also have peer reviewed literature to support why the research is needed. We also should make sure that if human beings are being used as participants, that their privacy and safety will be respected, and if there is any possibility of harm, no matter how small it is, and the benefit and risks whether indirect or direct for the partakers in the study needs to be very ... After extensive research on both sides of the issue, I believe marijuana should remain illegal in the United States. Some people believe that through the legalization of marijuana, our nation s tax revenue will significantly increase. On the contrary, like many other drugs, such as alcohol and tobacco, taxation of the drug will cost the nation money. For example, as stated by Marty Nemko, a psychologist and career coach, knowledgeable on the effects of legal marijuana, states that legal pot does not yield tax dollars, it costs tax dollars (Nemko). As with the taxation of alcohol and tobacco, tax dollars are not increased as commonly thought due to the cost of dealing with addiction, driving under the influence, and domestic abuse or illness. In the 21st century the interests and influence of China, India, and the US are beginning to intersect and overlap thereby this region is bound to become epitome of international conflicts and power dynamics. The presence of the three powers in the Indian Ocean is shown at Appendix Q attached. The littoral countries are going to play a major role in the ongoing power struggle because of their strategic locations. It is clearly evident that of the three most influential countries, it is China who is making forays in the domain of other countries and projecting its power in the far flung areas. The point to ponder is Is this Showcase of Power a Case of Expansionist China or Is it Economic Necessity of China . In the present situation it is a mix of both. Before moving any further it is vital to analyze the conflicting situation in the region. 19. In the case of China till now the focus continues to be on the Pacific and not on the IOR with principal interest at this juncture in the need to protect the Sea Lanes of Communications (SLOCS) along the Indian Ocean, vital for the country s energy imports. The seaward drive of China can be attributed to the twin propellants of geopolitics and economics . Off late China through its soft power diplomacy has begun to shape the IOR strategic environment, by providing large loans on generous repayment terms and investing in major infrastructure projects. The Iroquois Political System Even though the Iroquois and other Native American tribes had forged alliances with rivaling European powers they were unable to maintain any leverage economically and militarily during the Fur trade era. The introduction of the Dutch to North America happened by chance, as they were attempting to locate a passage to Asia. Henry Hudson, an English sea captain working for the Dutch came across the island of Manhattan in 1609 and sailed north on a river for 150 miles, later the Dutch established a trading post along this river called Fort Nassau, later Fort Orange, North America, the inclusion of New Amsterdam into the Dutch trading empire, as its capital allowed them to solidify their standing as a trading entity. While militarily they formed a great force to reckon with, it was their political system that made them even more a force in the early years of colonial history. This system allowed for them to form a unified front against the new European threat that was arriving in their lands. The Fur trade in North America began with the earliest contacts between the Iroquois and Europeans. Within a few years the Iroquois and the Dutch and others were bartering their goods with each other throughout the Mohawk Valley. With its convention center, night life noise, busy highways, advertised attractions, and sports related events, the city life expectations satisfy both visitors and residents. It is typical to assume that the high end activities and busy nightlife attract political feuds and noise because they are located in the city. Nonetheless, this is not the case for some of Central Minnesota s rural life found in places such as Riverview, Sterns County, Baker Township, and parts of Saint Cloud. So, comparing Central Minnesota s city and rural life, where are peace and beauty located? There is a continuous political struggle between the acceptance of dairy farm growth and feedlot growth midst some of the family owned businesses in the rural areas. Insomuch, the largest milk producer wanted to invest about 55 million into a dairy feedlot last year, but regulators proposed environmental concerns such as nitrate pollution in the water, manure smell, and large scale confinement of farm animals claiming it interferes with the beautiful side of country living. This family is known to have over 35,000 dairy cows currently working up to 22 hours a day giving them the competitive edge. Although this may appear somewhat monopolistic, it does provide employment opportunities for many as well as financial economic development for the entire State of Minnesota. Their mission is to operate oil and natural gas exploration, while marketing and distributing all over the globe. The primary issues the company faces are rebuilding their business after the tragic oil spill, their low oil prices and internal leadership promotions. Following the 2010 oil spill, all of BP s top executives were fired, and the company has continued to promote internally, as recent as February of 2016. The company has been trying to rebrand itself and fix its disastrous public image that resulted from the poorly handled oil spill. Due to these internal promotions, no new ideas have been introduced into the company and their efforts in recreating themselves have since stalled, leading to unmotivated employees and decreased profits. Although British Petroleum has solid production sites in Gulf of Mexico, Alaska, and various areas of the U.S, the brand s name remains so tainted from past violations. The declining price of oil, along with that environmental factors that affect the company, both nationally and globally, have exacerbated this stall and caused the company a major issue in recovering their public image, reputation, brand name, stock prices, and overall prosperity. These factors have certainly not been beneficial to the company in recovering from the sixty one billion dollars BP has had to pay as result of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 20. Political Postcard Of Syracuse Cultural Workers By Randolf... In the catalog, Syracuse Cultural Workers, a man named Randolf Smallwood created a political postcard that could be seen as controversial. This postcard is meant to appeal to people with a critical respective and it shows what their thoughts are about Conservatives. The artist uses bumper stickers to portray the harsh truth what Conservatives support and what they believe in. Political parties often do not agree on each other s views and this post card is an example of how they may bash each other to show the points they disagree with. Using a bumper sticker was an interesting approach because many people have them on their cars to show what candidate or party their supportive of, but these parodies of bumper stickers reveal more than what they normally say. Everything on this postcard is placed strategically and meant to portray a certain message. This postcard s main image shows a blue truck with many colorful bumper stickers on the back of it. It is meant to represent the truthful way that Conservatives think and what they believe in. We do not see the owner or driver of the truck in the picture, but we can assume that he is a middle class, white male who supports rich and powerful people. He does not drive a fancy, expensive car, but he then has a bumper sticker that says SAVE OUR BILLIONAIRES . He may be in support of the conservatives because he hopes that one day he will become rich and powerful himself. The postcard shows a medium shot of the car so it is ... • 21. Consumerism Worldview There are many different types of worldviews that that are held among the countless people of this world. Consumerism is one that is very prominent in this day in time. Consumerism absolutizes consumption by believing that we can find fulfillment by accumulating wealth and everything that comes with it. (Wilkins Sanford, 2009). There are many different elements of consumerism I will discuss, along with how this worldview of consumerism compares with the Christian worldview, and lastly, I will express how knowing what the Bible says about consumerism affects my life personally. According to Wilkins and Sanford (2009), there are several elements of a consumerism worldview; accumulating and using things brings fulfillment, money is power, we need just a little bit more, people are viewed as objects to consume, and if something ceases to fulfill me or meet my needs it should be discarded. With the idea that by accumulating and using things brings fulfillment, whether it be fulfillment of material things or fulfillment of emotional needs, this worldview neglects to fulfill our deepest emotional needs leaving us always desiring more to fill that void. Money is power leaves people always striving to accumulate wealth so they can have power and control over situations, because you are only important or significant if you have wealth. However, I was impacted by the fact that many of these children were not receiving the intervention services they likely needed to promote their social, emotional, and academic growth, even though their family was recently and is possibly still in crisis. While this was upsetting to me, it motivated me to pursue a career in developmental psychology where I could impact children in need of effective intervention and prevention programs. Earning this degree from Vanderbilt University would allow me to research intervention and prevention programs that will promote positive social, emotional, and academic outcomes for children. Journalism in today s news is not the same as it was over half a century ago. The Fairness Doctrine, which was eliminated in 1987, was a policy that required the holders of broadcast licenses to both present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that was, in the Federal Communications Commission s view, honest, equitable and balanced. Agenda setting by the media tells us what to think about public opinion about what should be on the public agenda is heavily influenced by the topics and issues that appear in the news (Glenn G. Sparks , 2012). The type of news people select often takes the form of opinionated entertainment rather than politically oriented information because some of this information is simply not presented. All the reporters in the world working all the hours of the day could not witness all the happenings in the world (Lippmann, 1922, p. 183). Limitations such as distance, time constraints, and subjectivity challenge the media. Controversy surrounding Kim Kardashian s pregnancy and the Paula Deen Scandal are both excellent examples of agenda setting in action. The media is ever present for these stories as if they are significant events. The placement of full page, color articles and top stories on news programming makes it clear that Americans should place these events as important issues. For Charlie Gordon, Hemingway s words hold more truth than anything he had been told throughout the course of his story. Charlie Gordon, the main character of Daniel Keyes Flowers for Algernon, was a thirty two year old man born with an unusually low level of intelligence. When Charlie was approached by a pair of scientists with the proposition of undergoing a revolutionary surgery to increase his intelligence, he readily agreed, thinking that the smarter he was, the more liked he would be. Throughout the novel Flowers for Algernon, Charlie underwent a serious transformation from an optimistic but dimwitted thirty two year old man with hope for the future, to a cynical genius whose world was slowly beginning to fall apart, and then back to a happier version of his original self. However, it is indisputable that Charlie was the happiest after the operation, when his I.Q. had sunk back down to a measly sixty eight. His relationships thrived in light of his recent life events, he was protected by the innocence and childlike naïveté of his mental state, and his learning ethic returned to a need to know basis. Intelligence has always been something of incredible value, so much so that mentally retarded Charlie Gordon was approached by scientists with the proposition of artificially increasing his intelligence. When the French heard word of this they too sent several regiments of troops to protect the frontiersmen and settlers in their territory in New France. The English sent General Braddock with a larger force than Major Washington to make war with the French on the frontier. The French being well aware of their surroundings, made good use of it while ambushing the English as they marched in columns toward the French to attack Fort Duqesne.
