Witches, Sorcerers, And Shamans
Witches, sorcerers, and shamans are all different terms used to describe persons associated with
other worldly powers. Cautionary tales have been written about them as far back as the Old
Testament and in Homer s Odyssey. While almost every human culture has possessed the theory of
a witch, the most well known witch trials are the ones from the late 15th century to the late 17th
century in Europe. Many aspects of European life, such as art and politics, were splitting away

The second article reviewed, Anthropological and Historical Approaches to Witchcraft: Potential for
New Collaboration?, was written by British historian Ronald Hutton in the early 21st Century. In
his writings, he discusses how different professionals, such as historians, sociologists, and
anthropologists, have all taken different approaches when studying witchcraft. He proposes setting
a model for witchcraft and using a set model to study witches and magic across the globe. He argues
that the studies done have looked at magic and witches from too narrow a lens. Hutton suggests
comparing two different societies that have had prominent histories with witches, such as European
and African witchcraft, and comparing them against one another. Hutton suggests that these two
groups have a very different history, but witchcraft reflected struggles common to all societies.
Another article discusses the domino effect of the weather and it s impact on the agricultural
economy of the time and how this explains the rise in witch trials in early modern Europe.

In the mid to late 1900s, the development and rise of the New Right sparked a new era in
American life. The New Right was a political conservative group that criticized the liberalism of
the Great Society as well as the conservative activists that had any association with the sexual

The Demon Lover by Elizabeth Bowen is a short story that takes place during World War II in
London, England. The main character, Mrs. Drover travels by herself to the bombed city to return
to her boarded up house. While gathering belongings, Mrs. Drover notices particular and out of
place that begins to haunt her. The reader witnesses her mental state deteriorate as she begins

how he knows she is there and when will he come. These thoughts are running through her head,
as well as the reader s head. Mrs. Drover becomes haunted with memories she has of him. The
letter is signed with by K so the reader is unaware of who the fiance is and his past; however,
based upon Mrs. Drover s reaction, the reader can conclude that this man is someone to be feared.
More and more panic sets in as time passes, Mrs. Drover not knowing the set time they are to
meet. The rain and the damaged, dark house aids her paranoia as she begins to believe she is not
alone, and is concerned when hearing noises. Mrs. Drover wants to escape back to the country as
soon as possible to be with her family, in safety away from the dead

This painting was known as Cassatt s strongest and wittiest feminist scene during the latter part
of 1880 (. Even though in this point of history, woman has more freedom and were allowed to go
the Opera, they had to be escorted. One of the main parts of the opera was women being put on
display, they would dress up and wear lots of jewelry and show off the appropriate amount of
skin. While on the other hand men wore black suits to do the opposite, they wanted to blend in
within the loge so they wouldn t be seen. Cassatt s painting took a different take of the
stereotypical representation of women in the loge. The painting shows a woman in the

unaccompanied. She is shown holding a fan in her left hand, the fan is a symbol of her
femininity, the fan is a female instrument and it was used as feminine language which was shown
to be more refined than actually speaking, but we can see that she holds sternly rather than
graceful and feminine. She is holding the fan almost like a weapon, thus letting people know that
she wants to be left alone. In the background we can see a male figure watching her instead of the
