The Effects Of Workplace Violence On The Workplace
According to The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health workplace violence is
described as any physical assault, threatening behavior or verbal abuse that takes place in the
workplace. Violence includes all behaviors ranging in aggressiveness from verbal harassment to
murder. Currently there is no law that requires protection for violence which occurs in the workplace.
However some states throughout the country has reached out to legislation an established prevention
programs. As of today, in 30 states (Florida not being one of them) if found guilty of workplace
violence, employees and patients can be charged with a felony and face increased penalties.
Workplace violence is a highly serious occupational risk, both domestically and globally. Violence in
the workplace accounts for nearly nine hundred deaths and almost two million nonlife threatening
assaults each year. The numbers are expected to be higher. But over the years facilities and nurses
have failed to report occupational assaults. Many nurses believe violence is a part of the job. However,
violence isn t part of a nurses the job description. Workplace violence doesn t always have to be
physical. It varies from offensive behavior, verbal, emotional, physical and unfortunately murder.
Evidence shows, healthcare and social workers are three times more likely to experience violence than
any other professionals. Many nurses may practice in a more vulnerable setting, such as the
emergency room,

1. A major focus of the lawsuit Chevron Chemical filed against Touche Ross was the auditing
profession s rules regarding the subsequent discovery of facts existing at the date of the auditor s
report . Those rules distinguish between situations in which a client cooperates with the auditor in
making all necessary disclosures and situations involving uncooperative clients. Briefly summarize
the differing responsibilities that auditors have in those two sets of circumstances.

necessary steps to ensure that anyone in receipt of the previously issued financial statements together
with the auditor s report thereon is informed of the situation and does not revise the financial
statements in circumstances where the auditor believes they need to be revised, the auditor would
notify those charged with governance of the entity that action will be taken by the auditor to prevent
future reliance on the auditor s report. The action taken will depend on the auditor s legal rights and
obligations and recommendations of the auditor s lawyers.
2. Given your previous answer, do you believe that Touche Ross complied with the applicable
professional standards after learning of the error in AFS s 1985 financial statements? Explain.
Answer:
Based on the previous answer, I believed that Touche Ross did not comply with the applicable
professional standards which are International Standard of Auditing (ISA) 560. When the personnel of
Touche Ross discovered that the AFS s 1985 financial statements contained a material misstatement,
they attempted to persuade AFS to recall the company s 1985 financial statements. But, unfortunately
AFS officials declined to recall those financial statements. At last, AFS and Touch Ross come

Why Did Lord Chamberlain s Men Use The Globe Theater
During this time period, there were not any televisions, cell phones, or computers. Because of this
people relied on the theater to keep them entertained. Though officially approved playhouses and
acting companies had only been around for about five years The Lord Chamberlain s Men was one of
the two acting companies that were permitted to perform in London city limits. Lord Chamberlain s
Men used the globe theater, while the other group used the Rose Playhouse which was owned by an
impresario and his son in law who was a former actor. In 1576 the Blackfriars Theater was built, but
Lord Chamberlain s Men could not use it to perform in. This is why the Globe Theater was built in
1598, though they could not finish the original construction because

Yeats Through A Modernist Lens. The Modernist View Of Poetry
Yeats through a Modernist Lens The modernist view of poetry is most often compounded through
depictions of unparalleled chaos, fragmentation, and disjuncture from the poetic self and society as a
whole. In William Butler Yeats poetry, he embodies these defining perspectives by his representation
of society within concepts of decay. More specifically, Yeats poems Leda and the Swan and The
Second Coming epitomize the poetic techniques that define modernist views of poetry. In essence,
these two poems compile deviations from previously established poetic ideals and, in their place,
create a disseverance between the poet, speaker, society, and audience.
In Leda and the Swan , Yeats compounds the oppositional elements of modernism into ... Show more

In contrast, Yeats inverted modernist version of the standing tradition invokes a sense of terror and
disgust. For example, where in Shakespeare s sonnet 18, the poet uses diction such as lovely and
darling , Yeats Leda and the Swan incorporates terms like terrified , brute and staggering . This
explicit opposition points to Yeats as a modernist figure; that is, Yeats use of form as a means to create
conflicts within the poem highlights the most basic depictions of modernism, conveying a sense of
fragmentation of society.
Also in Leda and the Swan Yeats conveys a sense of modernism through a connection between the the
concept of denaturalization of language and imagery. Denaturalization of language is the idea in the
modernist period that words are no longer effective in expressing the intended meaning; language,
instead of revealing meaning, only further conceals it. In this way, words no longer mean what they
originally meant, which essentially aimed to disassemble previous poetic techniques that mirror the
breakdown of society following the first World War. In stanza one, the swan s great wings are beating
still . Already, a certain ambiguity is introduced into the poem s atmosphere. Beating seems to suggest
movement, whereas still suggests the exact opposite. This paradoxical juxtaposition sets an eerie and
distressing tone for the rest of the poem. It creates a precedent of

Essay On Fourier Analysis
In numerical analysis, explicit and implicit approaches are used to obtain numerical approximations of
time dependent ordinary and partial differential equations. Fractional order differential equations are
used widely for finance market analysis. Implicit solution methods require more computational efforts
and are complex to program. In order to overcome these difficulties, explicit method for fractional
order differential equation has been introduced which is one of the most recently developed areas in
the world of finance. The main aim of this paper is to investigate stability of Fractional Explicit
method for qth order time fractional Black Schols equation by the well known Fourier analysis
method and a numerical experiment is presented for comparison of European call option prices for
different values of q .

Essay on journal on Unconditional Positive Regard
In tonight s session we have been learning further about Carl Rogers and his conditions of a successful
person centred therapy. We have been exploring Unconditional Positive Regard, a term used by
Rogers to describe a basic acceptance and support of a person regardless what they say or do.
Unconditional Positive Regard is an attitude of the counsellor towards his client. Rogers believes that
this attitude is essential to a healthy development and cause a positive therapeutic movement in a
therapy.
I find this condition; the very definition of humanity. Our species have a rare capability to understand
each other, however many of us hardly use it. It requires putting the others first, demands to put our
feelings and emotions aside. We are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In many cases, clients show signs of disbelief and sometimes even aggression towards their therapist.
The reason for that is conditional love most of us have experienced in a lifetime. This is called;
conditions of worth, since we were little children we have been told or shown that to deserve
acceptance and love we have to behave in a certain way ( e.g. Be good, patient, obedient, confident,
etc.)We are convinced that we have to be worthy of love. For most of us adults other people s
perception is very important and in many cases can even define a person. Being so used to seeing
myself through other people s eyes, being judged for what I do or have done, Unconditional Positive
Regard appears to me as almost impossible to believe. I do think that it is possibly also client s
attitude. That disbelief; that the therapist can put aside whatever I have done and see me as a worthy
person for who I am, even If I do not believe in me; probably take a while to disappear and change
into trust.
Rogers said that every one of us has within himself desire to change in a positive direction. I assume
that he meant and believed that goodness is our natural aspiration. I fully agree with him no matter
how unrealistic and ideal it might seem. If we, learning how to be a counsellor, will understand how to
be able to accept another person, regardless of their past, negative attitude or defensiveness we will

Glycogen In Muscle And Liver Tissue Lab Report
Post Mortem Presence of Glycogen in Muscle and Liver Tissue
Background
There are four main classes of macromolecules: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. For
this experiment the main focus will go to the carbohydrates, more specifically the polysaccharides.
Polysaccharides consist of three or more sugar molecules linked together ( macromolecules ) or one
sugar derivative are called homopolysaccharides.( polysaccharides 1) Homopolysaccharides are
glucose that includes glycogen and starch, which is the storage of carbohydrates in animals and plants.
( polysaccharides 2) During the second lab of this course, one of the technique to determine if
something had polysaccharides in it was using the Iodine test. Starch and glycogen units have a unique
geometry that is different from cellulose and chitin which have β 1,4 bonds. ( macromolecules ) The

Glycogen is indicated by the colour change of iodine from brown to dark blue. Both the muscle and
liver tissue will be tested in the same manner. First, 0.5 grams of tissue will be cut finely with a scalpel
and then transferred to a test tube. Next, the test tube will be filled with 10 mL of distilled water and
0.1 mL of an iodine solution. Lastly, the solution shall be decanted from the test tube into a cuvette
and its reflection tested with a photospectrometer that has been calibrated to a distilled water and
iodine solution. If the solution contains glycogen, the photospectrometer will show a reflection peak in
the blue/purple spectrum of light (400nm 500nm). If glycogen is not present in solution no peaks
should be present in the 400nm 500nm wavelength as the photospectrometer was normed to a distilled
water and iodine solution. All of the tests will be performed three times per tissue

Women During Ww2
Women during World War II World War II caused a shift in the gender roles and stereotypes. While
some countries saw progress: United States, France, Britain, Italy and the Soviet Union, others
oppressed women: Germany and Japan. In countries like the United States and Britain, women began
joining the workforce and the military. French women fought for the Resistance against Germany
when the Germans occupied France. Even though Italy was allied with Germany and a Nazi country,
many women resisted fascism and assisted Jewish people. Many Soviet women flew fighter planes,
some of the first women to do so. Japanese women were required to work in poor conditions. German
women were restricted from doing many things and even paid to marry and have ... Show more

Women were a staple in this movement, working in factories making things like silk and textiles.
While these women were crucial, they often did not have a lot of money or a husband. The reason
many of them did not have husbands is because women were supposed to stop being paid for work
after they got married. They were still expected to be hard workers for the family after marriage, but
also be submissive and compliant. In the first 40 years of the 20th century, this became even more
enforced. This meant that in 1937, when the Pacific War began, women were discouraged from
joining the armed forces. By 1943, Japan was having the same problems as many other countries: so
many men in the military were dying, so women had to step up and begin taking over jobs on the
homefront. By 1944, over four million women were working. Anyone considered fit to work was
required to. Women fit to work were not married and over the age of 15. Although not required,
married women were also pushed to work. There were not nearly as many Japanese women working
as there were American, but their involvement in wartime efforts was still a crucial part of Japan s
history. Japanese women in the workforce during World War II were paid less than men and the
conditions afforded them were horrible. Food was scarce, factories were loud and unclean; and the
work was difficult. Many women were required to stay in confined living quarters behind factories.
When the war ended and American military began moving into Japan, they freed working women and
attempted to give them many of the same rights that Western women had. These rights were not being
required to stop working for wages after marriage and other restrictions placed on them. Neither
entering the workforce nor the demands of Americans gave Japanese women any real change. They
hardly had any freedom before, during or after the

Critical Assessment Of An Essay
Critical Assessment
When writing an essay it is essential to allow for the piece to develop and become its own organic
living being. The author must allow for the paper to make mistakes therefore it can review itself and
correct any confusion. This procedure of making and amending blunders can occur as many times as
possible for the paper to fully evolve. Thenceforth the author must be able to look objectively at their
essay and evaluate how effectively the message is being portrayed. The capability to adequately
evaluate and reflect upon one s essay is what separates the good essays from the superb ones. The
essential criteria to what makes a good essay is an accomplished thesis statement, lively transitional
wording, and impactful verb choices.
While examining my first essay i quickly identified its shortcomings relative to my essential criteria. It
was clear to me that my thesis statement lacked directness and did not properly engage the reader. It
was too narrow in scope, while, correspondingly failing to provide the reader with direction for the
rest of the paper. The thesis was probably the main downfall of the entire essay because it was difficult
to tie in what i was writing back to a weak thesis statement. Additionally the paper had close to zero
transitional phrases and when they did appear they seemed awkward and forced. This resulted in an
essay that felt choppy and probably was uncomfortable for the reader to process. The reason for
having transitional words

Noahic Covenant Research Paper
Throughout the Old Testament God has been actively directing people to him. His method of doing
this was by establishing covenants with him. The definition of covenant is, a formal and serious
agreement or promise (Merriam Webster). There are seven convents described in the Old Testament:
Adamic, Noahic, Abrahamic, Palestinian, Mosaic, Davidic and New Covenant. Some of these
covenants are conditional and based on prerequisites and can be broken if the requirements are not
met. The rest are unconditional covenants, they were made with no strings attached, meaning the

Moses explains the rules of the Sabbath: no work on the Sabbath (Ex 31:12 17), whoever violates it

Giacomo Puccini s Madama Butterfly
Madama Butterfly, written by Giacomo Puccini, tells the tragic tale of Cio Cio San and her American
lover through music and lyrics in Italian. The production uses visual imagery to connect with the
audience across language barriers and to create a stunning picture. One example of this visual imagery
is the use of Bunraku and puppetry to portray certain characters. The use of Bunraku for the child
created a lifelike portrayal but could not provide full emotional depth, and the other puppets towards
the beginning of the opera felt unnecessary and confusing. The child puppet moved in a way that was
close to the way and actual child moves, and the realism of this movement helped me keep the idea of
the child in my head as I watched the show. I was able to ignore the three people controlling the child
partly because of what they wore, the dark and veiled costumes concealing their identities, and partly
because the movement and actions looked very real. When the child walked, the perceived weight
shift was correct, and this helped create the illusion that Cio Cio San had a child with her onstage that

Health Care Provider and Faith Diversity America is known as a melting pot of cultures, and because
of this, health care providers encounter patients and families from a multitude of different
backgrounds and religions. Every religion comes with its own set of beliefs, rituals, and worldview.
What each culture or religion believes as truth can effect their view of health and wellness. Health care
providers must be accommodating and understanding of these differences. This paper will discuss the
differences in worldview between Christianity and Buddhism, as well as the implications of these
beliefs for health care. It will also discuss the common factors between religions regarding healing,

Biblical Themes In Dante s Inferno
Torremaggiore, Italy, in 1250, Frederick II, dies as the last truly powerful Holy Roman Emperor.
Florence, Italy, 1266, the Guelfs invade the city which puts an end to Ghibelline power. Following the
division of the Guelf party into the Whites the party of supporters of independence from papal control
and the Blacks the supporters of Pope Boniface VIII, the later regain control of Florence and exile the
White supporter, Dante Alighieri in 1302. For the remaining years of his life, Alighieri traveled around
Italy while writing his masterpiece, The Comedy. Of this trilogy the most popular work was Inferno
where he depicts an allegorical journey through Hell in which he encounters many of his political
enemies. Though Dante was a supporter of independence from Papal control, he was a very religious
man and many of those Biblical themes arise in Inferno. In his epic poem, Dante Alighieri expels his
wrath against his enemies, once friends turned foes, political and biblical, and real and not real, with
the most extreme divine justice. Modern politics is well associated with the famous slogan of the
separation of Church and State . Though the effects of religion on the founding of governments of
countries is still apparent today in examples such as the Pledge of Allegiance of the United States or
the very prominent In God We Trust upon all American currency, using biblical verses as a basis for
any legislation has become taboo. However, in the year 1300 which is

Augusten s Illness In Running With Scissors
While beginning to read Running With Scissors by Augusten Burroughs it quickly becomes apparent
that the narrator and protagonist of this story has some type of compulsive disorder. The exceptionally
brilliant use of description allows the reader to effortlessly understand Augusten s obsession with
tidiness and cleanliness. Within just a few chapters of reading the audience is given numerous
examples of Augusten s obsessive compulsive tendencies. One of the most compelling examples is
when he refuses to attend school if he does not look a particular way. I flatly refused to go to school if

What Is Abigail Williams Dishonest
Abigail has many traits, like dishonesty, controlling, and evil. These traits make a lot of bad things
happen in the story. People have died from it and have suffered from loved ones dying. Abigail
Williams has many traits one of them is her dishonest nature. For example, when people started saying
there was witch craft in Salem and all the fingers started pointing at her she said that Tituba sent her
spirit out on her and made her drink the chicken blood. Tituba didn t make her drink the blood she
drank the blood to kill Goody Procter. Which was a lie the only reason she was there and drunk the

QLD won a dour game 1 in Sydney, 3 of the last 4 games have now been decided by just 1, 2 and 4
points. Game 2 moves to Melbourne to be played on the big open spaces of the MCG with little likely
home crowd support or influence for either side. The weather forecast is for light showers across
Tuesday and Wednesday. Key team changes, NSW have Gallen and B Morris returning while QLD
lose Cronk but have a quality back up in Cherry Evans. Wear and tear injuries are always going to be
an issue across both team lists, but notably Farah (shoulder) and Slater (shoulder). QLD dominated the

I expect both teams to be a bit better than game 1. QLD will be looking for more fluency with the

playing with less ball and field position I though NSW dominated through the middle, yet didn t
capatilise on this with poor combinations in the halves and poor linking to either edge. I think this
remains a key advantage but they have to turn opportunity into points and scoreboard points. Jennings
and Josh Morris need to see more early ball with some room, and Hodges must be targeted. The more

Essay On Jersey Shore
Television genres in the post network era are important because genres can target a larger range of
audience, which results in higher ratings. Genres also help create different and unique narratives that
influence popular culture. Jersey Shore illustrates how the reality television genre has a huge impact
on popular culture, society and viewers. Jersey Shore is about women and men some of Italian descent
that party and do whatever they want. The show explicitly illustrates the roles of guidos (males) and
guidettes (females), these people are working class Italian Americans. Even though the show is
representing the Italian population in the U.S. it is not doing a proper job because the representation is

The Colbert Report is an American late night talk show, which is a news satire and comedic program.
The show illustrates how the comedy and satire genre is important when it comes to informing people
about political and controversial topics. The comedic element of the show makes the program
entertaining and informative. In comparison to The Harvest of Shame this documentary that was used
to inform the American people about a sever issue made people feel bad, it was depressing. The
Colbert Report takes boring political issues and makes them interested, which appeals to younger
adults. Many young adults do not pay attention to politics because it is boring or too difficult to
understand. The show takes a political subject, simplifies it and makes it interesting. For example, in
one episode he discusses the 2016 election and makes fun of a statement of Donald Trump, it s not
only funny, but informative. Stephen Colbert is always talking to the audience directly, which creates a
better connect with the viewers. Shows like The Colbert Report bring people together to discuss
important topics. The comedy and satire of the show is just a technique to reach more people and
create a safe environment to discuss these sensitive topics. There are many talk shows that are
comedic and satire because it makes the show self reflexive. In conclusion, genre is a major factor

I. Problem Statement
Lancers present problem is figuring out if they should reposition themselves as a company.
Repositioning the company is a risky move because Lancer deals with a distinct market. A large
department store has contacted Lancer to start mass producing replicas which could ultimately result
in a $4 million dollar increase in annual revenue. Lancer which is mainly known for high quality
merchandise now has to make the decision whether they should start mass producing like their

On the other hand, the company s products would be more seen by consumers, which means the
demand for their products probably increase.
IV. Alternatives A. Accept the contract 1. Advantages a. Lancer accepting the contract from the
department store would result in a $4 million dollar increase in annual revenue. b. Lancers
merchandise was limited before the contract, but now with mass production through the department
store they will be able to fully compete with competitors in the market. The company would no longer
have to worry about the scarcity of authentic artifacts because they would be mass producing.
2. Disadvantages a. Lancer accepting the contract from the department store will affect the brand
image within the market, which is known to have a sense of exclusivity. This will change if they
choose to mass produce. b. If Lancer were to mass produce replicas this could lead to upsetting
customers and also dealers who will take their business elsewhere. The reason being that they were
used to have exclusive artifacts and now they won t because of mass production.
B. Reject Contract 1. Advantages a. The company wouldn t produce replicas and change their business
model (sales are still increasing roughly 20% each year) b. By declining the contract from the
department store, it will allow the company to maintain its strong and well respected brand image it is
known for. If Lancer was to accept the contract

Pros And Cons Of Minimum Wage
COMPENSATION PACKAGES
Minimum Wage A minimum wage is the lowest remuneration that employers can legally pay their
workers. Equivalently, it is the price floor below which workers may not sell their labor. Although
minimum wage laws are in effect in many jurisdictions, differences of opinion exist about the benefits
and drawbacks of a minimum wage. Supporters of the minimum wage say it increases the standard of
living of workers, reduces poverty, reduces inequality, and boosts morale. In contrast, opponents of the
minimum wage say it increases poverty, increases unemployment particularly among unskilled or
inexperienced workers and is damaging to businesses, because excessively high minimum wages
require businesses to raise the prices of their product or service to accommodate the extra expense of
paying a higher wage. In the US, wages for almost all workers are set either by market forces or by
collective bargaining. The body referred to as Fair Labor Standards Act determines the minimum
wage that is abided by all states. As per the 2015 data, the minimum wage per hour is 7.25 USD.
However, this is not the case with the fourteen states and some cities with their own minimum wage at
federal level. For instance, in Florida the minimum wage per hour is 8.10 USD and in California its
10.50 USD per hour. In Greenland the minimum wage for both private and public sector is 20 USD
per hour, not official. The pay rates are set through collective bargain agreements regardless

Intel Capital Structure Essay
Question 5: Evaluate the Put Warrant/Convertible Bond proposal. Does it solve Intel s capital structure
dilemma? What arguments might be made in favor of it?
Intel s capital structure dilemma was that it was holding too much cash on hand. Eventually, there
were three available strategies or alternatives that Intel could undertake in terms of cash disbursement
policies. First, it could continue or expand its market repurchase program. Secondly, Intel could
declare dividends to its shareholders on existing stocks. The last strategy is to put together a package
of two unique securities: 1) A distribution of a two year put warrant to its existing shareholders. 2) A

In this sense, Intel is hence unlikely to be able to reduce their cash holdings via the put warrant
strategy. http://www.derivativesstrategy.com/magazine/archive/1998/0598col1.asp However, since this
is a distribution, and not sale, of the warrants, there are no tangible benefits for Intel if the stock price
at the expiration date is above $50. It does not stand to gain from any sale proceeds since the warrants
were distributed instead of sold.
The issuance of convertible debt will result in even more cash holdings for Intel, an additional $1
billion. This, at face value, does not solve Intel s capital structure dilemma of having too much cash.
However, Intel can afford to incur more debt financing, since it has relatively low long term debt. By
doing so, its long term debt ratio (using 1991 figure) would change to:
Long Term Debt Ratio = (Long Term Debt)/(Total Assets) = (0.363 + 1)/6.292
= 21.7%
This figure could be excessively high, as the industry average is 14.42%. It must be noted that after
two years, debt holders would be entitled to convert these convertible bonds into Intel common stock.
Should it be so, this would once again bring down the long term debt ratio, and increase Intel s
shareholder s equity.

The World Population Increases The Global Food Production
Literature Review
Several studies (Oltjen et al., 1996; Dahlen et al., 2014; Thornton, 2010; and Tilman et al., 2002)

The current meat practices in the U.S are unsustainable in terms of being able to meet the future
demands of global society (Dahlen et al., 2014). Although livestock practices have changed
dramatically over time to make production more efficient it has negative impacts on the environment
and human health. Fortunately sustainable solutions do exist. Others livestock farmers around the
world are implementing sustainable practice that improve the quality of meat and decrease their

In the next forty years food production will need to increase by one hundred percent if it is going to
meet the demands of global society (Dahlen et al., 2014). The reproduction of livestock has undergone
evolutionary changes over time all in favor of making production more efficient. Artificial
insemination (AI), estrous synchronization and fixed time AI (TAI), semen and embryo
cryopreservation, multiple ovulation and embryo transfer (MOET), in vitro fertilization, sex
determination of sperm or embryos, and nuclear transfer are technologies that are used to enhance the
production efficiency of beef operations (Dahlen et al., 2014). These are some of the newer
technologies that have been generated to increase meat production. Food provides energy and
nutrients, and its acquisition requires the expenditure of energy. In today s world unbalanced
nutritional diets lead to obesity and other serious health issues (McMichael et al., 2007). Livestock
raising is a major contributor to agriculture related greenhouse gas emissions. Studies have been
conducted to analyze what changes the meat industry would need to undergo to reduce the greenhouse
gas emission levels. In order to reach the target level of greenhouse gas emissions the world would
need to reduce their demand of animal products significantly (McMichael et al., 2007). The estimated
average per head intake of, at most, 90 g meat per day and not more than 50 g of this should come

In our history class we have learned about the different mythological beliefs of many groups including
Christianity, Roman, Greek and Germanic. When faced with this paper I chose to discuss a particular
figure in Germanic or what is more commonly known as Norse mythology. The god I selected was
Heimdall who was the Norse go of light and also the Guardian of Asgard. Like many other gods
within Norse mythology Heimdall was also considered to be a half son of Odin however his creation
wasn t as simple as most. Many stories state Heimdall had nine different mothers; Gjalp, Greip, Eistla,

No one is sure when Heimdall actually had any down time or breaks but he did have his own hall. His
palace was called Himinbjörg or the Heavens castle and it was located at the top of the Bifrost Bridge,
which means he was always within seeing distance. Heimdall was one of the Norse gods that were
associated with having mighty swords. Along with his sword Heimdall wore pure white armor which
matched his unrivaled handsomeness and he had his mighty horn Gjallar that was used when he
spotted the enemies of Asgard. The last part of Heimdall s appearance was his magnificent steed Gull
Top which had a golden mane.
Heimdall, being the protector of Bifrost, was responsible for any kind of enemies that tried to enter
Asgard. However Heimdall most hated adversary was none other than the adopted son of Odin, the
half giant Loki. Loki was the God of mischief and was always creating schemes to claim the throne of
Asgard. Heimdall, however being very perceptive always was able to see through Loki evil plots. An
example of this is when Loki tries to steal Freya s golden necklace in the dead of night and Heimdall,
being the only one who was awaked by the sly Loki, stops Loki s plot. The final example of Heimdall
s constant conflict with Loki was on the Day of Ragnorök where Heimdall uses his Gjallar to

The Controversy Over The Use Of Animals In The Classroom
Have you ever had a classroom pet? Would you like a animal in your class every day? There are many

Shark Finning Is The Removal Of The Shark
Every year there are thousands and millions of sharks dying in the ocean simply, because of a soup?
Not a soup that makes you feel or look any younger, nor does it cure a sickness, but because of a
delicacy. Sharks are at a high demand mainly in East Asia. Shark Finning is the removal of the shark s
fins while they are still alive and throwing the rest of its body back in the ocean where it takes a
painful death. Seeing that sharks are on top of the ecosystem, their population is also decreasing.
Given the way they are being caught, which is clearly a form of animal cruelty, therefore the practice
of shark finning must be banned.
The shark fin soup was said to be created in China during the Sung Dynasty (AD 986), where the
emperor used the dish as a symbol of class and wealth. While catching sharks were difficult
throughout that time, it made the soup even more of a popular delicacy. The soup is a thickened broth
made with either chicken or ham broth. The price of each bowl varies from $100 to $1000 depending
on the form and elegance of shark fin served. However it is served, it is a symbolic way of showing
stature.
Now a days, it is being served during special occasions, like traditional Asian dinner banquets,

Howard Hughes Influence On Aviation Industry
On December 24, 1905, an aviation prodigy who would eventually change the entire industry was
born. Howard Hughes, son of wealthy oil business owners inherited the family fortune at 18 after his
parents untimely demise. He would go on to found several successful companies including the Hughes
Aircraft Company, which would go on to create several aviation breakthroughs. I chose Howard
Hughes for my report because my grandpa just retired from working at Raytheon which merged with
Hughes Aircraft back in 1997. With millions of dollars at his disposal, a young Howard Hughes
invested his money in the Hollywood business producing and directing several successful movies
including the 1930 box office hit Hell s Angels an aviation movie occuring ... Show more content on

After breaking several speed records with the H 1, Hughes set his eyes on the around the world record.
And in 1938 Howard accomplished this breaking the previous record by nearly half the time, which
was set by Wiley Post who flew the Lockheed Vega 5 c. However breaking records wouldn t hold the
company up for long. The years of WWII proved increasingly difficult for Hughes Aircraft who while
producing armaments for the U.S had yet to commission a plane for the war effort. This was
completely opposite from the other aircraft manufacturers such as Boeing, Lockheed, and the North
American Aviation Company who created several planes for the war including the: P 51, B 17,
Douglas A 6, and the Curtiss R5C. Eventually, the company received two government contracts for the
war. One was the H 4 Hercules, and the other was the XF 11 which arguably became the downfall of

Internal And External Pressure In George Orwell s Shooting...
In Shooting an Elephant by George Orwell, the officer experiences internal and external pressure to
shoot an elephant unwillingly. In the story, an Imperial British officer goes after an elephant causing a
disturbance in a village of Burma. Despite having no intention to harm the elephant, he begins to
conflict with the internal pressure of going against his own morals to please the Burmese people;
externally dealing with the pressure of the Burmese crowd and the duties of his imperial job.
Ultimately, he succumbs to pressure and shoots the elephant against his intentions. As the officer
encounters the elephant face to face he decides he will not kill the animal. His attitude is clear from
the start as I had no intention of shooting the

Similarities Between Pope Boniface VIII And King Phillip...
Pope Boniface VIII and King Phillip IV of France were leaders of a large conflict during the middle
ages. The issues between church and state were very prominent. Both authoritative figures believed
that the other was asserting too much power. Boniface passed his final papal bull, Unam Sanctam, in
1302 which would led to the end of the dispute. Boniface and Philip were interlocked in a battle over
power during the middle ages. Boniface believed that the church should have more power than the
state; therefore he sent decrees to Philip in order to maintain dominance. The bulls Boniface created
gave him power over not only King Philip, but over all secular rulers. Philip attempted to keep the
church below the state, but Boniface continued to send these bulls effectively limiting Philip s power.

Boniface was abusing his power by writing these bulls. Or that s what s appeared to be happening
according to the King and other secular rulers. Philip had Boniface arrested by mercenaries and
William de Nogaret, Philips royal minister, for heresy in 1303. Boniface would later die in 1303 due to
a high fever. The issues between Pope Boniface and King Philip IV relate to the case of Thomas
Backet and Henry II because both disputes were conflicts between church and state. Henry II thought
that by electing Beckett as his Archbishop he would be able to rule over the church and the state.
However, Becket did not give Henry that power and he would eventually be assassinated. In
conclusion the feuds between church and state have a long history. Many powerful figures have fought
over the power to control church and state resulting in lives being lost. Although, it is said that
Boniface was mot trying to gain power, but to protect the church. Despite this claim figures were so
hungry for power that they would do anything to again or protect

Eleanor Roosevelt s Book Of Common Sense Etiquette
True Patriotism springs from a belief in the dignity of the individual, freedom and equality not only
for Americans but for all people on Earth, universal brotherhood and good will, and a constant and
earnest striving toward the principles and ideals on which this country was founded. This is a snippet
from Eleanor Roosevelt s Book of Common Sense Etiquette. This line describes what I believe my
responsibility to America is. We, as American citizens, have a responsibility to be good people.
Samuel Adams once said, Honesty, honor, godliness, industry, respect for the law, morality, and
truthfulness are the wheels on which our entire republic rides. If the American people are no damn

One way to put America first would be staying informed on issues affecting our community. Most
teenagers mindset on issues in their community is if it doesn t involve me I don t care. But what they
don t realize is just because it doesn t influence them now it will affect them in the future. The
president that is elected this year will still be in office when we are old enough for it to affect us. Laws
that are passed in the next few years that we, as teenagers cannot vote on yet, will still Influence us
later in life. Just because we, personally can t vote on it yet doesn t mean that we can t change others
opinions that can vote. If we follow things that are happening in our community and we talk about it
or debate it we might be able to enlighten some people with information that they weren t privy to
before. This, in fact, just might change their minds on certain things, which in turn could change how
they vote, or who they vote for. Let us not be afraid to help each other let us never forget that
government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not
a President, Senators, Congressmen and Government officials but the voters of this country. This was
said during Roosevelt s speech at Marietta, Ohio, July. 8, 1938. Staying informed in what is happening
in your community is also another way to fulfill your responsibility to

Theme Of Silence
The book Silence, by Shusako Endo follows a theme of a silent God who accompanies a believer in
adversity. The main character of the book is Sebastian Rodrigues. It tells of Sebastian Rodrigues
arduous journey halfway around the world to Japan in the 1630s, in order to track down a rumor that
his mentor Father Ferreira had abandoned his faith, at a time where the Japanese leaders were
extremely hostile to foreigners and Christianity and also suspicious of their intentions. He travels with
two other missionaries but one of them falls sick whilst travelling and is deemed unfit to carry on to
accompany him. The book is not fast paced, but immensely character driven. For example, we see the
growth of Sebastian Rodrigues as a priest. At one point he labels Kichijiro a coward. Was it possible
that he was of our faith this wretch. Here we see him being judgmental. However, later in the novel we
see him for the first time sharing a proper ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This can be echoed through what Kichijiro says If I was born in another time, I would have been a
good Christian . It is also, in Japan, that Rodrigues indulges in the dialogue with Inoue. Endo uses an
allegory where Inoue deems Japan unfit for Christianity and encourages him to apostatize, I do not
view Christianity as an evil religion , Inoue says. Furthermore, when Rodrigues encounters Ferreira he
echoes the thoughts of Inoue, he says I have labored in this mission for twenty years ... our religion
does not take root in this country , Kichijiro also refers to himself as a weak shoot that will never grow
no matter what you do . His resolve begins to fade due to the treatment he receives whilst in captivity,
ironically it is when he is well treated that he feels the most vulnerable to

Analysis Of Michael Billig s Theory On Banal Nationalism...
The Hmong are known to have tightly knitted communities that are created through ties of kinship in a
clan based society. This sense of kinship is essential as a catalyst for the Hmong in developing and
producing a strong sense of nationalism despite the fact that they do not have a recognized political
state or homeland. This is especially important as the Hmong population has been dispersed to all
parts of the world following their involvement in a multitude of geopolitical struggles. Despite having
a scattered global population, the Hmong are continuously finding ways to remain distinct and as a
unified people, especially here in the United States. The Hmong create and reproduce a sense of
nationalism despite facing cultural decline and having relatively separated communities built around
different urban centers across the United States. Additionally, this research will discuss how the sense
of nationalism can be a way for the Hmong to move forward despite facing cultural decline. In this
research, these elements will be explained and explored through Michael Billig s theory on banal
nationalism (Billig, 1995). Nationalism is most often seen as a sudden spark of patriotism or strong
feelings of loyalty and appreciation to a nation state after some sort of triggering event. Some of the
most recognizable moments in United States history that have sparked widespread nationalism in its
citizens include the Sandy Hook shooting, the bombing of the World Trade center, and the

Persuasive Essay About Public Shame
Shame corrodes the very part of us that believes we are capable of change (Brené Brown). In The
Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, a woman is publicly shamed for having a child with a man
who is not her husband. Another example of public shame can be seen in modern day articles Florida
Scarlet Letter Law is Repealed by Gov. Bush, by Dana Canedy, and Houston Couple Gets The Scarlet
Letter Treatment. Both talk of public shame that people have had to endure in the present day. Public
shaming is not an effective punishment because it is a cruel and unusual punishment, it does not deter
crime, and it can emotionally traumatize the one being shamed.
One of the main reasons why public shame is not an effective punishment is because it is a cruel and
unusual punishment. The Eighth Amendment to the United States Constitution states that cruel and
unusual punishments [shall not be] inflicted. The verdict of public shame is not morally just and
should not be accepted in society. In The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne undergoes public torment for
having a baby with a man other than her husband. She feels the shame of the punishment most when
forced to walk through the square, under the scrutiny and torment of the town: In a moment, however,
wisely judging that one token of her shame would but poorly serve to hide another, she took the baby
on her arm, and, with a burning blush, and yet a haughty smile, and a glance that would not be
abashed, looked around at her

Essay on Narrative Therapy
Abstract
This paper will look at the logic of narrative therapy by focusing on 5 major points. This paper will
begin by discussing how the narrative approach defines and perceives problems. It will address how
narrative therapy views the nature of the relationship between the client and the professional. This
paper will look at how problems are solved using the narrative approach. It will also focus on three
main techniques used in narrative therapy, which will include externalization, deconstruction and re
authoring. This paper will also include a short narrative critique of the medical model. The Logic of
Narrative Therapy Narrative therapy is considered postmodern due to the fact that it uses a story
telling approach to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Kelley (1996) this process is recommended by narrative therapists because it allows the
client to begin to see where the discourse emerged from. The therapist must first just listen to the story
and determine what the client sees as the existing problem (Kelley, 1996). Then the therapist begins to
ask questions with the intention of bringing forth the full meaning of the problem (Kelley, 1996). In
deconstruction the therapist searches for answers as to who all is involved with the problem, what past
events lead up to the problem development, how the problem changed over time, how the client has
been fighting the problem thus far and how the problem is affecting the client s life (Kelley, 1996).
Kelley (1996) reported that after the therapist has a full understanding of the problem the
deconstruction phase moves on to its second stage. The therapist and the client begin working together
to break down the prevailing story in order to map the influence the problem is having on the client s
life (Kelley, 1996). Mapping the effect of the problem is particularly important because it lays the
foundation of the new story line (Monk, Winslade, Crocket Epston, 1997). According to Monk,
Winslade, Crocket Epston (1997) typically when the effect of the problem is discussed with the client
they begin to feel as if their story has been heard. They

  • 2. The Effects Of Workplace Violence On The Workplace According to The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health workplace violence is described as any physical assault, threatening behavior or verbal abuse that takes place in the workplace. Violence includes all behaviors ranging in aggressiveness from verbal harassment to murder. Currently there is no law that requires protection for violence which occurs in the workplace. However some states throughout the country has reached out to legislation an established prevention programs. As of today, in 30 states (Florida not being one of them) if found guilty of workplace violence, employees and patients can be charged with a felony and face increased penalties. Workplace violence is a highly serious occupational risk, both domestically and globally. Violence in the workplace accounts for nearly nine hundred deaths and almost two million nonlife threatening assaults each year. The numbers are expected to be higher. But over the years facilities and nurses have failed to report occupational assaults. Many nurses believe violence is a part of the job. However, violence isn t part of a nurses the job description. Workplace violence doesn t always have to be physical. It varies from offensive behavior, verbal, emotional, physical and unfortunately murder. Evidence shows, healthcare and social workers are three times more likely to experience violence than any other professionals. • 5. Yeats Through A Modernist Lens. The Modernist View Of Poetry Yeats through a Modernist Lens The modernist view of poetry is most often compounded through depictions of unparalleled chaos, fragmentation, and disjuncture from the poetic self and society as a whole. In William Butler Yeats poetry, he embodies these defining perspectives by his representation of society within concepts of decay. More specifically, Yeats poems Leda and the Swan and The Second Coming epitomize the poetic techniques that define modernist views of poetry. In essence, these two poems compile deviations from previously established poetic ideals and, in their place, create a disseverance between the poet, speaker, society, and audience. In Leda and the Swan , Yeats compounds the oppositional elements of modernism into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In contrast, Yeats inverted modernist version of the standing tradition invokes a sense of terror and disgust. For example, where in Shakespeare s sonnet 18, the poet uses diction such as lovely and darling , Yeats Leda and the Swan incorporates terms like terrified , brute and staggering . This explicit opposition points to Yeats as a modernist figure; that is, Yeats use of form as a means to create conflicts within the poem highlights the most basic depictions of modernism, conveying a sense of fragmentation of society. Also in Leda and the Swan Yeats conveys a sense of modernism through a connection between the the concept of denaturalization of language and imagery. Denaturalization of language is the idea in the modernist period that words are no longer effective in expressing the intended meaning; language, instead of revealing meaning, only further conceals it. In this way, words no longer mean what they originally meant, which essentially aimed to disassemble previous poetic techniques that mirror the breakdown of society following the first World War. In stanza one, the swan s great wings are beating still . Already, a certain ambiguity is introduced into the poem s atmosphere. Beating seems to suggest movement, whereas still suggests the exact opposite. This paradoxical juxtaposition sets an eerie and distressing tone for the rest of the poem. It creates a precedent of ... Fractional order differential equations are used widely for finance market analysis. Implicit solution methods require more computational efforts and are complex to program. In order to overcome these difficulties, explicit method for fractional order differential equation has been introduced which is one of the most recently developed areas in the world of finance. The main aim of this paper is to investigate stability of Fractional Explicit method for qth order time fractional Black Schols equation by the well known Fourier analysis method and a numerical experiment is presented for comparison of European call option prices for different values of q . We have been exploring Unconditional Positive Regard, a term used by Rogers to describe a basic acceptance and support of a person regardless what they say or do. Unconditional Positive Regard is an attitude of the counsellor towards his client. Rogers believes that this attitude is essential to a healthy development and cause a positive therapeutic movement in a therapy. I find this condition; the very definition of humanity. Women were a staple in this movement, working in factories making things like silk and textiles. While these women were crucial, they often did not have a lot of money or a husband. The reason many of them did not have husbands is because women were supposed to stop being paid for work after they got married. They were still expected to be hard workers for the family after marriage, but also be submissive and compliant. In the first 40 years of the 20th century, this became even more enforced. This meant that in 1937, when the Pacific War began, women were discouraged from joining the armed forces. By 1943, Japan was having the same problems as many other countries: so many men in the military were dying, so women had to step up and begin taking over jobs on the homefront. By 1944, over four million women were working. Anyone considered fit to work was required to. Women fit to work were not married and over the age of 15. There were not nearly as many Japanese women working as there were American, but their involvement in wartime efforts was still a crucial part of Japan s history. Food was scarce, factories were loud and unclean; and the work was difficult. Many women were required to stay in confined living quarters behind factories. • 15. Critical Assessment Of An Essay Critical Assessment When writing an essay it is essential to allow for the piece to develop and become its own organic living being. The author must allow for the paper to make mistakes therefore it can review itself and correct any confusion. This procedure of making and amending blunders can occur as many times as possible for the paper to fully evolve. Thenceforth the author must be able to look objectively at their essay and evaluate how effectively the message is being portrayed. The capability to adequately evaluate and reflect upon one s essay is what separates the good essays from the superb ones. The essential criteria to what makes a good essay is an accomplished thesis statement, lively transitional wording, and impactful verb choices. While examining my first essay i quickly identified its shortcomings relative to my essential criteria. It was clear to me that my thesis statement lacked directness and did not properly engage the reader. It was too narrow in scope, while, correspondingly failing to provide the reader with direction for the rest of the paper. The thesis was probably the main downfall of the entire essay because it was difficult to tie in what i was writing back to a weak thesis statement. Additionally the paper had close to zero transitional phrases and when they did appear they seemed awkward and forced. This resulted in an essay that felt choppy and probably was uncomfortable for the reader to process. The reason for having transitional words ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

God told Moses that if these rules were broken then Israel would be destroyed. The next covenant made to Moses explains the rules of the Sabbath: no work on the Sabbath (Ex 31:12 17), whoever violates it must be put to death (Ex 31:15). The production uses visual imagery to connect with the audience across language barriers and to create a stunning picture. One example of this visual imagery is the use of Bunraku and puppetry to portray certain characters. The use of Bunraku for the child created a lifelike portrayal but could not provide full emotional depth, and the other puppets towards the beginning of the opera felt unnecessary and confusing. The child puppet moved in a way that was close to the way and actual child moves, and the realism of this movement helped me keep the idea of the child in my head as I watched the show. I was able to ignore the three people controlling the child partly because of what they wore, the dark and veiled costumes concealing their identities, and partly because the movement and actions looked very real. • 31. Pros And Cons Of Minimum Wage COMPENSATION PACKAGES Minimum Wage A minimum wage is the lowest remuneration that employers can legally pay their workers. Equivalently, it is the price floor below which workers may not sell their labor. Although minimum wage laws are in effect in many jurisdictions, differences of opinion exist about the benefits and drawbacks of a minimum wage. Supporters of the minimum wage say it increases the standard of living of workers, reduces poverty, reduces inequality, and boosts morale. In contrast, opponents of the minimum wage say it increases poverty, increases unemployment particularly among unskilled or inexperienced workers and is damaging to businesses, because excessively high minimum wages require businesses to raise the prices of their product or service to accommodate the extra expense of paying a higher wage. In the US, wages for almost all workers are set either by market forces or by collective bargaining. The body referred to as Fair Labor Standards Act determines the minimum wage that is abided by all states. As per the 2015 data, the minimum wage per hour is 7.25 USD. However, this is not the case with the fourteen states and some cities with their own minimum wage at federal level. For instance, in Florida the minimum wage per hour is 8.10 USD and in California its 10.50 USD per hour. In Greenland the minimum wage for both private and public sector is 20 USD per hour, not official. The pay rates are set through collective bargain agreements regardless ... Intel s capital structure dilemma was that it was holding too much cash on hand. Eventually, there were three available strategies or alternatives that Intel could undertake in terms of cash disbursement policies. First, it could continue or expand its market repurchase program. Secondly, Intel could declare dividends to its shareholders on existing stocks. It does not stand to gain from any sale proceeds since the warrants were distributed instead of sold. The issuance of convertible debt will result in even more cash holdings for Intel, an additional $1 billion. This, at face value, does not solve Intel s capital structure dilemma of having too much cash. However, Intel can afford to incur more debt financing, since it has relatively low long term debt. By doing so, its long term debt ratio (using 1991 figure) would change to: Long Term Debt Ratio = (Long Term Debt)/(Total Assets) = (0.363 + 1)/6.292 = 21.7% This figure could be excessively high, as the industry average is 14.42%. It must be noted that after two years, debt holders would be entitled to convert these convertible bonds into Intel common stock. Shark Finning is the removal of the shark s fins while they are still alive and throwing the rest of its body back in the ocean where it takes a painful death. Seeing that sharks are on top of the ecosystem, their population is also decreasing. But what they don t realize is just because it doesn t influence them now it will affect them in the future. The president that is elected this year will still be in office when we are old enough for it to affect us. Laws that are passed in the next few years that we, as teenagers cannot vote on yet, will still Influence us later in life. Just because we, personally can t vote on it yet doesn t mean that we can t change others opinions that can vote. If we follow things that are happening in our community and we talk about it or debate it we might be able to enlighten some people with information that they weren t privy to before. This, in fact, just might change their minds on certain things, which in turn could change how they vote, or who they vote for. Let us not be afraid to help each other let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President, Senators, Congressmen and Government officials but the voters of this country. This was said during Roosevelt s speech at Marietta, Ohio, July. 8, 1938. Staying informed in what is happening in your community is also another way to fulfill your responsibility to ... • 48. Theme Of Silence The book Silence, by Shusako Endo follows a theme of a silent God who accompanies a believer in adversity. The main character of the book is Sebastian Rodrigues. It tells of Sebastian Rodrigues arduous journey halfway around the world to Japan in the 1630s, in order to track down a rumor that his mentor Father Ferreira had abandoned his faith, at a time where the Japanese leaders were extremely hostile to foreigners and Christianity and also suspicious of their intentions. He travels with two other missionaries but one of them falls sick whilst travelling and is deemed unfit to carry on to accompany him. The book is not fast paced, but immensely character driven. For example, we see the growth of Sebastian Rodrigues as a priest. At one point he labels Kichijiro a coward. Was it possible that he was of our faith this wretch. Here we see him being judgmental. However, later in the novel we see him for the first time sharing a proper ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This can be echoed through what Kichijiro says If I was born in another time, I would have been a good Christian . It is also, in Japan, that Rodrigues indulges in the dialogue with Inoue. Endo uses an allegory where Inoue deems Japan unfit for Christianity and encourages him to apostatize, I do not view Christianity as an evil religion , Inoue says. Furthermore, when Rodrigues encounters Ferreira he echoes the thoughts of Inoue, he says I have labored in this mission for twenty years ... our religion does not take root in this country , Kichijiro also refers to himself as a weak shoot that will never grow no matter what you do . His resolve begins to fade due to the treatment he receives whilst in captivity, ironically it is when he is well treated that he feels the most vulnerable to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 49. Analysis Of Michael Billig s Theory On Banal Nationalism... The Hmong are known to have tightly knitted communities that are created through ties of kinship in a clan based society. This sense of kinship is essential as a catalyst for the Hmong in developing and producing a strong sense of nationalism despite the fact that they do not have a recognized political state or homeland. This is especially important as the Hmong population has been dispersed to all parts of the world following their involvement in a multitude of geopolitical struggles. Despite having a scattered global population, the Hmong are continuously finding ways to remain distinct and as a unified people, especially here in the United States. The Hmong create and reproduce a sense of nationalism despite facing cultural decline and having relatively separated communities built around different urban centers across the United States. Additionally, this research will discuss how the sense of nationalism can be a way for the Hmong to move forward despite facing cultural decline. In this research, these elements will be explained and explored through Michael Billig s theory on banal nationalism (Billig, 1995). Nationalism is most often seen as a sudden spark of patriotism or strong feelings of loyalty and appreciation to a nation state after some sort of triggering event. Some of the most recognizable moments in United States history that have sparked widespread nationalism in its citizens include the Sandy Hook shooting, the bombing of the World Trade center, and the ... • 50. Persuasive Essay About Public Shame Shame corrodes the very part of us that believes we are capable of change (Brené Brown). In The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, a woman is publicly shamed for having a child with a man who is not her husband. Another example of public shame can be seen in modern day articles Florida Scarlet Letter Law is Repealed by Gov. Bush, by Dana Canedy, and Houston Couple Gets The Scarlet Letter Treatment. Both talk of public shame that people have had to endure in the present day. Public shaming is not an effective punishment because it is a cruel and unusual punishment, it does not deter crime, and it can emotionally traumatize the one being shamed. One of the main reasons why public shame is not an effective punishment is because it is a cruel and unusual punishment. The Eighth Amendment to the United States Constitution states that cruel and unusual punishments [shall not be] inflicted. The verdict of public shame is not morally just and should not be accepted in society. In The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne undergoes public torment for having a baby with a man other than her husband. She feels the shame of the punishment most when forced to walk through the square, under the scrutiny and torment of the town: In a moment, however, wisely judging that one token of her shame would but poorly serve to hide another, she took the baby on her arm, and, with a burning blush, and yet a haughty smile, and a glance that would not be abashed, looked around at her ... According to Kelley (1996) this process is recommended by narrative therapists because it allows the client to begin to see where the discourse emerged from. The therapist must first just listen to the story and determine what the client sees as the existing problem (Kelley, 1996). Then the therapist begins to ask questions with the intention of bringing forth the full meaning of the problem (Kelley, 1996). In deconstruction the therapist searches for answers as to who all is involved with the problem, what past events lead up to the problem development, how the problem changed over time, how the client has been fighting the problem thus far and how the problem is affecting the client s life (Kelley, 1996). Kelley (1996) reported that after the therapist has a full understanding of the problem the deconstruction phase moves on to its second stage. The therapist and the client begin working together to break down the prevailing story in order to map the influence the problem is having on the client s life (Kelley, 1996). Mapping the effect of the problem is particularly important because it lays the foundation of the new story line (Monk, Winslade, Crocket Epston, 1997). According to Monk, Winslade, Crocket Epston (1997) typically when the effect of the problem is discussed with the client they begin to feel as if their story has been heard. They ...
