AIDS Epidemic In 1980s America
Exploring the AIDS Epidemic in 1980s America
Angels in America examines the spread AIDS throughout the 1980s and the ways that people reacted
towards it. It s a serious play about politics, history, spirituality, and death...It was not only an attack
on 1980s Reaganism, but also on the conservative movement of the U.S. politics and culture since the
end of World War II (Bronski 58). Angels in America represents an act of resistance and asks the
audience whether change is possible. This question takes on a whole new meaning for the audience,
who has the added benefit of hindsight.
I realized that while watching the TV series, San Francisco and New York City are the opening scenes.
Both of these cities are significant to the history of gay ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We are able to see the ways in which this process occurs and cultural productions are not only ideas,
but have a reality in the way that they are played out on the bodies of the characters. We are able to see
that the way that disease is conceptualized directly impacts the response of the government and the
medical community to the disease, the types of support made available to people afflicted by disease
and the various amounts of oppression or discrimination that they may encounter in their everyday
lives as a result. Ideas about homosexuality and AIDS affect the type of treatment that Prior receives
and the way that his loved ones interact with him. The 1980s were particularly devastating for the gay
men. 1985 marked the beginning of President Reagan s second term. Reagan is mentioned several
times over the course of part 1 not only to set a political backdrop for the series, but also challenges
the audience to question why the government was so slow to respond to this issue. Reagan didn t even
give his first speech on HIV/AIDS until years after the on start of the epidemic and after thousands of
lives had been lost. In this context, it is fair to assume that HIV/AIDS really became an epidemic
through the lack of immediate action from the government and medical establishments that can be
directly attributed to homophobic. From its onset, there was widespread fear of contamination as
AIDS was constructed as a fatal infectious disease that threatened to wipe out mankind. It was also
seen as a gay plague or punishment for sexually abnormal behavior. Angels in America is not merely a
political critique, but an act of political resistance and a beacon of hope. In the final scene, Prior
delivers a stirring monologue, the audience sees that we are not doomed to repeat the mistakes of our
past. It takes place in 1990, Prior

Criticism And Imagery In Richard III, By William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare s Richard III is an historical tragedy written in 1591. The play covers events in
the latter years of the War of the Roses (1455 1485). That war a prolonged, intermittent conflict
between the two noble houses of York and Lancaster; the play chronicles the bloody deeds and
atrocities perpetrated by its central figure the murderous and tyrannical King Richard III. After a long
war between the noble houses of York and Lancaster, England is at peace under the ruling of King
Edward IV and the victorious family of York. But Edwards s younger brother, Richard Duke of
Gloucester resents Edwards s power and the happiness of those around him. Malicious, power hungry
and his bitterness towards his physical deformity (hunch ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this metaphor, he compares conscience with a creature with many tongues. That his tongue has a
different conscience but everything condemns himself. No one believes what Richard III says
anymore, and even himself. The last imagery is, True hope is swift, and flies with swallow s wings.
(Act 5 Scene 2) Richmond compares hope to a bird. Hope with good cause is swift; it flies as fast as a
swallow. Hope that their hope would fly fast as like a swallow and it will come true. And it did come
true. Richmond killed Richard III and became the king. Richard III opens in 1483 with the title
character delivering one of Shakespeare s most famous soliloquies. The first thirteen lines establish
the cheerful, optimistic mood in the kingdom now that Richard s brother, Edward IV, has reclaimed
the throne and the War of the Roses, which began in 1455, appears to have ended. Richard sums up
the situation in the first two lines of the

Essay on Canine Human Relations
Is dog s worth to humans simply as man s best friend? Throughout history, dogs have been protectors,
companions, and pets. However, science is saying that there is much more to these creatures. Dogs

with humans makes them more than just pets because dogs interact like human children and canines

dogs have been able to detect certain types of illness and were able to react towards the illness in a
form that was comforting to the patient. Animal helped therapy is still young in how well it can be

Japan And China Relations During The End Of World War II
Japan and China have been in cold relations ever since the end of World War II. After the war, there
was barely any diplomacy to bring together their relation. Not until 1972 Prime Minister Kakuei
Tanaka of Japan visited China with an official invitation. At the scene, both sides were willing for
reconciliation and normalization, result with the Joint Communique between two governments. From
that moment on, the (economic) relations of the two nations has been reestablished, encouraged and
developed rapidly (China, Japan Joint Communique, 1972). There is an opinion that China s
incredible (economic) developing rate has greatly influenced Japan diplomatic with Beijing since that
time. And this essay is going to support this argument with data as well as historical and contemporary
context. First, energy requirement is usually critical to the development and modernization of China
and the stabilization of Japan. Therefore, variables that related to it can influence both countries
economic interest, lead to the consideration of policy makers. It is clear that both countries were in
need of developing their gas and oil fields. Second, Japanese engagement into China market have

of the client country led to the need of adjusting investment policies within the government body.
Third, China is modernizing and in many ways will be able to surpass Japan in near future. Therefore

Analysis Of Antonio Vivaldi s The Four Seasons
Antonio Vivaldi, a Baroque composer conceived in Venice in 1678, is extremely outstanding for his
sonatas, musical dramas, and vocal music, yet especially for his 500 or more concertos. Among these
works is potentially Vivaldi s most prestigious concerto, The Four Seasons . This piece is to a great
degree expressive, particularly as it is joined by an individual poem for each season, which gives the
entertainers a manual for deciphering the nuances that are ever present in Vivaldi s works.[1] Vivaldi
is additionally the most illustrative European author of a kind that he advanced in the 1710s, the
twofold violin concerto, and these works are known to have impacted future writers, notwithstanding
including Bach.[2] Vivaldi is likewise said to have either imagined or if nothing else to have promoted
ritornello in his concertos, notwithstanding numerous different ideas, for example, little motivic units
that he utilized as topics, and his utilization of mood to fabricate strain as his creations escalated.[3]
Vivaldi was a critical arranger in his chance and even right up til today as a result of his various
synthesis, the new melodic structures he presented, and the numerous melodic ideas that he promoted
through his pieces. This paper will initially talk about the foundation paving the way to Vivaldi s
profession and different life effects on his music, trailed by the different melodic structures and ideas

The And Doing Well By Doing Good
Virtuousness and Doing well by doing good. Many of the individuals we presented to operated under
the widely held assumption that organizations which act virtuously and do the right thing are at a
competitive disadvantage to those that do not. We delivered the good news that this is largely
incorrect. For instance, organizations with higher perceived levels of virtuousness have much higher
profitability (Cameron, Bright, Caza, 2004), and CEOs who rated high on four moral principles
integrity, responsibility, forgiveness, and compassion had an average return on assets of 9.35 versus
1.93 for those with low ratings (Leadership: Measuring the return on character, 2015). Perceived
virtuousness also has a strong positive correlation with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Why? Research on social networks demonstrates that the people you spend time with shape your
emotional state, your values, and your actions (Christakis Fowler, 2009). Furthermore, research has
identified a cluster of organizational values that promote virtuousness and are closely related to the
four moral principles held by CEOs in high performing organizations: contribution, trust, compassion,
integrity, and forgiveness (Cameron, Bright, Caza, 2004; Keane). We reinforced this message by
emphasizing that individuals and organizations are providing themselves with a rare source of
sustainable competitive advantage when acting virtuously and enabling virtuousness within the
organization. Indeed, you can do well by doing good. Approach versus Avoidance Goals and
Organizational Policy. We summarized the research findings on goal orientation to introduce the basic
idea that focusing on what you do not want (not breaking the law and going to prison, in this context)
is an ineffective way to get what you do want (flourishing in life, for example). To demonstrate that
this is more than semantics, we often ask the participants to take a few moments and visualize a life of
not going to prison. The responses were always revealing: participants consistently reported not seeing
much of anything when attempting to visualize this obvious don t want, illustrating the brain s
inability to mentally represent avoidance goals. To aid participants in

Examples Of Beauty In Dancer From The Dance
In the novel Dancer from the Dance the author uses beauty and aesthetics in many different ways. The
author uses beauty and aesthetics in ways such as, the night life in the city, the relationships between
the characters in Dancer from the Dance, the clothing that the character s wear, and the way each
character looks. The characters in Dancer from the Dance feel like themselves when they are able to
dress, act, and go places where they won t be judged by others. The author shows the reader that
during the day the characters have to hide who they really are so that they won t be judged by society,
but at night the characters are free to do what they want and won t be judged for it because they will
be with others like themselves. The characters do the things that they do because that is who they are,
and there is beauty in those things.
The characters in Dancer from the Dance dress in normal clothing during the day so that they can fit
into society. One of the main characters in the novel is Andrew Sutherland. Andrew Sutherland dresses
as a drag queen at night when he goes out to gay bars at night. He dresses as drag queen because that
makes him feel like himself. For some gay males, clothing is a semiotic
marker for identity creation. (Schofield). Sutherland is a man that has money and a sense for fashion.
Since he has the money to buy nice expensive clothes, he does. Because of their spending power, gay
consumers have been found to be more brand and fashion conscious

Classroom Vs Traditional Classroom
In life there are always positive and negative things in life, there are always two sides to look at. In
this case I m talking about whether I think that traditional classroom setting is better for the students
or if online is better. I know I m about to contradict myself but honestly there is no right or wrong way
with going with the classroom setting. I say that because some kids learn faster or are more educated
in some things which is completely normal, no one is the same. Some kid s need that more personal or
one on one learning because there are some kids that need. Sometimes it just works out for the family
best, for example my parents travel a lot and for me to go to a traditional classroom I depended on my
parents to drive me to school every day because I don t live close for the bus to pick me up and take
me to school. There were many other reasons like the people I associated myself with because they
were the people I met my freshman year. I realized that the people I was hanging out with were not
people that I had things in common with. My freshman year I was as my 7th grade teacher said I was a
follower not a leader . Which is crazy to think because if anyone personally knows me they know I do
not like when people boss me around, if I were to work I would rather be the boss and not the
employee. People think a lot of bad things about me because my dad is a business owner and that is all
I ve ever seen him do. Which has create this monster inside of me that

Surgical Site Infections At Hospitals, Accreditation...
Surgical site infections occur when a patient experiences infection following surgery, often as a direct
result of the care received in a hospital or other medical facility. While these infections can often be
easily treated while the patient is still at the hospital, the incidences of these infections can have
significant and lasting impacts on patients and the hospital itself, even resulting in a patient s death if
the infection is not detected and treated appropriately. Since these infections occur while patients are
under the care of professionals and during hospital stays, it is imperative that all involved in patient
care follow procedures and policies established by the facility to reduce the risk of infections in
patients. This involves not only information about surgical site infections and their prevention, but the
impact of these infections on patients, hospitals, and staff members, as well as how surgical site
infections impacts a facility s accreditation. The purpose of this paper is to discuss surgical site
infections, the implications of their occurrences at hospitals, accreditation expectations, and outcomes
related to cost and quality.
Surgical Site Infection
A surgical site infection is, quite simply, an infection that occurs at a surgical incision point following
a surgical procedure (Nursing Standard, 2013). As with any medical procedures, there are risks of
infection following surgery, and surgical site infections can and do occur, even in the safety and

Analysis Of A Thousand And One Nights
A Thousand and One Nights is a tale about the over sexed east which is favored by the sexually
repressed west when applied to and analyzed under the lens of Orientalism. This translation of the
text, while not as sexually explicit as Sir Richard Burton s translation, has its fair amount of sexual
promiscuity which paints the middle eastern characters as dishonest, violent, and sexually deviant.
These traits were seen as socially taboo to the west, especially those in Victorian Europe who helped
the tale gain its reputation as a popular exotic story. The two main scenes where these traits come into
play both take place within A Thousand and One Nights frame story with Shahrayar and Shahzarman.
Shahzarman kills his adulterous wife and her lover then leaves to visit Shahrayar in his kingdom.
When Shahrayar s wife and servants are caught in the act they are killed and Shahrayar vows to kill
his future brides on their wedding nights which is when Shahrazad attempts to bring him to his senses.
The two brothers are extremely hot headed and violent and their wives are plagued by insatiable lust,
which plays into the sexually charged barbarity perpetuated by Orientalism. Throughout this paper I
will be using Edward Said s definition of Orientalism. Said defines Orientalism as the following:
Orientalism can be discussed and analyzed as the corporate institution for dealing with the Orient
dealing with it by making statements about it, authorizing views of it, describing it, by

Neutralization Theory
As a society, we are obsessed with murder and we strive to understand why it occurs. In order to
understand why murders occur one must understand the motivations present and be able to classify
them as instrumental or expressive. In the case of Joseph Ortiz, a member of the 500 Block street
gang, he was motivated to kill by gain and anger. When applying criminological theories one must
consider all aspects of the case at hand. No perfect theory exists to explain every homicide. Many
believe that differential association and neutralization theory explain many aspects of gang homicides,
such as the one Ortiz committed. Differential association is important because it focuses on the
influences of intimate others and how the behaviors that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both criminology theories both fall under the positivists school of thought, which highlights the
importance of social and cultural influences (Wood Alleyne, 2010). Neutralization and differential
association theories oppose classical school of thought because they state that killers are not born.
Furthermore, both theories are social process theories and involving the learning process along with
the effect of external influences on individuals behavior (Wood Alleyne, 2010). Neutralization theory
is actually an extension of differential association theory. Both theories deal with attitudes and values
that influence perceptions, which drives one to criminal acts such as homicide in the case of Mr. Ortiz.
The process of learning techniques is another similarity among these theories. Indeed both theories are
used to learn how and when to commit homicide. Personal group influences, whether criminal or not,
also play a role in each theory. Personal group influences can include close family members, relatives,
friends or peers. Inappropriate socialization is also a contributor to non conventional acts. Both
theories explain the reasons that led to the murders of rival street gang members and how they were
learned. Overall, both theories help explain how individuals exposed to violent crimes such as murder
in gangs, learn from the events and end up engaging in homicides due to social and environmental
influences and

Mommy What Does Nigger Mean by Gloria Naylor
Being a Chink by Christine Leong
Questions on Meaning
1. Naylor believes that written language is inferior to spoken language because it cannot capture the
essence of life. For example Naylor writes I consider the written word inferior to the spoken, and
much of the frustration experienced by novelists is the awareness that whatever we manage to capture
even in the most transcendent passages falls far short of the richness of life. Naylor continues on to
comment on the dynamics of dialogue and the senses experienced in each moment to express the idea
that writing can never capture all the thoughts, senses, and environment occurring when someone is
speaking.
2. Naylor never heard the word nigger before until she heard it in the tone that the white third grader
used. She had heard the word before but only when it was used a compliment or for grouping a group
of people. While the white third grader used the negative connotation of it as a derogatory term to
insult her simply based on her race.
3. Naylor means that word nigger was changed from derogatory term used by racist whites to subject
African Americans based on their previous mistreatment to a term used by the African Americans to
each other to compliment one s actions. For example In the singular, the word was always applied to a
man who had distinguished himself in some situation that brought their approval

Material Properties Of Steel Iron
Material Properties of Steel
Steel is an alloy of iron, with carbon being the primary solute in the solid solution. It is a
polycrystalline solid with grain diameter from 10 to 20 micro meter (Ashby et al). The presence of
impurity like carbon causes the crystal lattice distortions to increase, hence making giving steel better
hardness, yield strength, and tensile strength, at the cost of ductility. Pure iron being very ductile but
comparatively weak, steel is widely because of its greater load bearing capacity. Other impurities are
also introduced into steel to produce different properties. Materials like chromium, vanadium,
titanium, boron etc. are added to steel to give it better corrosion resistance, hardness, tensile strength
and better fatigue response (Smith et al). Elements like carbon and nitrogen form take up interstitial
spaces between the iron atoms owing to their reduced atomic size (Smith et al). Elements with larger
atoms like nickel, chromium, aluminium, sulphur, phosphorus etc. act as substitutional elements
(Smith et al). Although, the inclusion of various alloying elements do alter the material property and
the crystalline structure, material property of basic steel can be understood by analyzing various
phases of iron and carbon solid solution. Considering the structural differences in steel it can be
differentiated into austentic, ferretic and martensitic.
As excessive presence of carbon in steel can render steel extremely brittle and hard, carbon

Introduction
Chemical equilibrium is the study of change within a chemical reaction and how far it will go to reach
a dynamic equilibrium (Burdge). Dynamic equilibrium is defined as the constant movement of species
in a chemical reaction, gone to incompletion while the rates of production and consumption are equal
(Kf = Kr ) (Burdge). It differs from static equilibrium in that species are constantly being consumed
and produced, it is dynamic movement (Fox). The concentration of such species do not change, it
remains constant (Fox). The rate at which species are being consumed and produced is known as the
equilibrium constant (K) (Burdge). Due to the fact that the concentration

Christopher Hitchens s Views On Politics, Culture,...
Christopher Hitchens was a British American intellectual and writer who was known worldwide for
his controversial opinions and provocative forms of expression. His works were published in a number
of books and in multitudes of magazines, such as Vanity Fair, Slate, and The Atlantic, just to name a
few. However, a large portion of his time was spent actively expressing his opinions in televised
debates, public forums, and university speeches. His interest in political science after graduating from
Balliol College in Oxford molded his ideas into a general theme of anti authoritarianism. This theme
was very well imbedded into his career, for he wrote much about politics, culture, religion, and
literature. As a critic of both society and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This, in turn, gives his argument much more weight and validity. The ability to capture such an
audience requires a great deal of scholarly language, which he accomplishes by utilizing his wide
vocabulary. His work is loaded with words like scrupulous, refractory, sanguinary, ( The Real
Mahatma Gandhi ), fatuous, and invocations ( Free Speech ). The use of such words gives his
arguments a sense of sophistication, which serves to make his arguments sound legitimate.
Furthermore, through scathing remarks about his subject, his humorously brutal tone serves to engage
and entertain his audience. Witty comments, such as But the two greatest achievements of Austria are
to have convinced the world that Hitler was German and that Beethoven was Viennese, allow Hitchens
to discredit his subject and say that it has not had any real accomplishments. Altogether, he
demonstrates that valid criticism of anyone can be entertaining, yet scholarly.
One distinct style that set Hitchens apart from most thought provoking scholars is his use of obscene
and politically incorrect language. This works to shock the reader and to engage them even further. In
his Vanity Fair essay, Why Women Aren t Funny, he discourteously insists that most humorous women
are hefty or dykey or Jewish, or some combo of the three ( Why Women Aren t Funny ). Hitchens is

The book of Lamentations is deconstructed by characteristics and contents. The two main
characteristics of the book are the dirge rhythm and placement of certain stresses. The contents of
Lamentations include Jerusalem (the abandoned widow), the punishment of Jerusalem, a personal
lament, advice about God s righteousness and mercy, a prayer for help, siege conditions, and the
request of restoration. The next section in chapter nine is about the lives of the survivors. Some of the
survivors remained in Judah, moved to egypt, and were held in captivity in Babylon. Those in
Babylon began to use Aramaic, instead of Hebrew. The fear of losing the traditions and stories of the
Israelites inspired writers to record documentation of the Israelites traditions and stories. Once
Nebuchadnezzar passed on, Babylon slowly perished. Nabonidus fled Babylon, thus allowing Cyrus to
move in without any resistance. Cyrus allowed those in exile to return to their former homes, and
authorized the reconstruction of the Temple. Tullock then discusses Ezra and Nehemiah. Ezra was a
priest that was known for bringing people back to Jerusalem and reforming some of the old practices.
These include the problem with foreign wives and renewing of the covenant. Nehemiah , a builder,
was chosen as a governor for the province of Yehud. He strove to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, free

Theme Of Jealousy In A Separate Peace
Human nature is notorious for its trait of jealousy. One may grow hostile when he desperately seeks
another s possession or talent. This statement is evident in the character of Gene from John Knowles A
Separate Peace. Throughout the story, he is jealous because his friend, Finny, has exceptional athletic
ability. After one regretful action from Gene, Finny starts facing tough circumstances, eventually
separating them. A Separate Peace by John Knowles, Gene demonstrates how envy can tear
friendships apart. First, Gene admits to being guilty of shaking a tree in order to injure Finny when he
visits him at his home, making Finny livid, and temporarily tearing them apart. Gene is envious of
Finny s athletic ability and bravery. One way Finny shows his bravery is by jumping off a tree for fun.
Gene is greatly threatened by the bravery, so he decides to strip it from Finny by shaking the tree one
day, making him fall and suffer an injury. Consequently, he instantly regrets his decision, but he
realizes that the damage is done. Remorsefully, he wants to apologize for his terrible choice, but when
he tries to talk about the situation and confess, Finny is in denial and starts to get angry. Finny s denial
is evident when he says I don t know anything. Go away. I m tired and you make me sick. Go away
(Knowles 70). This dialogue shows how Finny did not believe that Gene caused the incident even
after the confession. This is because he believes that Gene would not do such an action. The
confession tears Finny apart to the point that he lashes out at Gene and wants him to leave his house.
If Gene did not commit the notorious action, Finny would not have to feel the pain physically from the
injury, and mentally from the idea that Gene would hurt him, and the boys could have a stronger
friendship. Second, the injury puts Finny in the hospital, separating the two, which cause Gene to
suffer depression. As Finny is badly wounded, he has to leave his boarding school, Devon, for a long
period of time. He spends his time in the hospital, away from Gene. FurthermoreThis makes Gene
regret his decision even more. Not only are Gene and Finny physically separated, but also emotionally
separated. Essentially, Gene loses his

The Internal Production Spaces Of Large Cities
This same logic leads not just towards generalized urban agglomeration but to the emergence of
multiple dense industrial districts within the metropolis. The internal production spaces of large cities
are composed of mosaics of particular kinds of industrial land use focused on localized nodal clusters
comprising activities that range from manufacturing to office and service functions. For example, gun
and jewellery manufacturing in Birmingham, England; footwear industry of East London; clothing
production of New York City; motor vehicle industry of Tokyo; and office functions in modern
metropolis illustrate different aspects of the theory of industrial organization and location. They

The metropolis and the neighbourhood can be linked to the Chicago school of urban sociology, which

This kind of work focuses on interaction and its density within the city, generating an ecological

their growth in terms of spatial and social movement. The city is an area of dense mobility and

Embryonic Research
Many women are eager to become a mother, but infertility prevents some women from satisfying this
need. However, modern biotechnologies combined with changed norms of culture now provide them
reproductive choices such as in vitro fertilization. In order to develop these reproductive choices, we
need to research on living human embryo. Because its procedures terminate the life of embryo,
embryonic research stirs up public attention on its morality. Society questions if these methods are
morally right. Do they violate the meaning of personhood and life? Do we kill a human when we
research the embryos? These questions are asking our foundation of morality. We must be cautious
and avoid any logical fallacies when we answer them. Using ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In this essay, Gorovitz points out several logical fallacies in embryonic research opponent essays,
including Kass . For instance, one of his arguments is that opposing essays usually use slippery slope
arguments, stating that starting of artificial insemination would lead us to social disaster (117). He
argues that the slippery slope arguments are not valid in this discussion because they never provide
any rational evidences why we cannot stop after we start down this path. Gorovitz claims that
Collectively we have significant capacity to exercise judgment and control (118) so the practice of
artificial insemination will not lead us to the disaster. There are few more ill logics in Kass and other
opposing essays that Gorovitz has pointed out. Ironically, however, logical fallacies he uses to attack
his opponents also appear in his essay too.
Another Gorovitz s important argument is the argument against Kass statement, The human embryo is
not mere meat; it is not just stuff; it is not a thing (Kass 102). Gorovitz argues that according to Kass
statement, human cadavers which are also not mere meat, not just stuff, not the thing, should be
protected from being used for research purpose too. But since it is acceptable to use human cadavers
in research, in medical education, and in organs transplant, Gorovitz claims that these using of
cadavers justify using of embryos as well. In this comparison,

Cheaper By Dozen Analysis
The cliche is that students nationwide will settle in and be assigned a What did you do on summer
vacation? essay on their first day back. I have never been asked to write, nor asked anyone to write,
such a letter, but it remains a staple of shows and cartoons. It has been used in movies and television
as a conceit to begin a narration, leading to an extended flashback that contains the main story. At
times, the reader (the teacher) doesn t believe the tale, while other times he or she is flabbergasted that
so much has happened to a young child, during the innocence of summer.
That innocence is childhood, and it is summer. As adults, we lose it (except for teachers). At contract
time, I wonder if the ire teachers receive AND THEY HAVE SUMMERS OFF!!! is as much a longing
for that childlike innocence of youth as an issue of pay? Probably not.

What is life? Toil? I hope not. An epic. Again, I hope not; too exhausting for me. So then what? That s
the question for your students. A major league scout will not show up at the Little League game and
offer a contract. So what is life? And how do we achieve our hopes and dreams?
And what do we do with our idle time? Enjoy it?
And, if life is neither Idyll or Epic, why do books and movies and stories portray it as such? What is
the purpose of life? What, you ask, are their favorite stories and why?
Now that s how you start the year; not with a reflection, but with hopes and dreams. Discuss.

The, Taoist, And Aristotelian Views On The Soul s...
Does the soul exist? If so, what is the soul? Moreover, what is its function in daily life? For millennia,
schools of philosophy have investigated these questions and attempted to answer them by devising
complex philosophies, which were in some cases completely alien to our modern ideas. In this essay, I
will discuss the Egyptian, Taoist, and Aristotelian views on the soul s function and composition during
life. Then, I will compare these philosophies and discuss which aspects of each philosophy I find the
most plausible from a realist s point of view. Concerning the composition and function of the soul, I
argue that the Aristotelian and Taoist philosophies are equally plausible, but that the Egyptian
philosophy also had plausible aspects. Ultimately, however, it is difficult to determine which theory
the most plausible (from a realist s perspective) without tackling the bigger question does the soul
exist?
The ancient Egyptians were soul dualists, meaning that they believed that a person had two or more
souls (in this case nine).1 In Egypt, one of the main purposes of the nine souls was to help the
deceased reach the afterlife. 2 In fact, the Egyptians believed that some souls only existed after death,
but I will not discuss these in this paper. Instead, I will focus on the role of the soul during one s life.
The Egyptians identified six souls that were present during life: Khabit, Ba, Khat, Ib, and Ren.3 The
Khabit was considered a shadow that could detach itself

A Brief Biography of Mark Twain
Mark Twain was born on November. 30, 1835 in the small town of Florida, MO. Mark s birth name
was Samuel Langhorne Clemens. In 1839, the Clemens family moved 35 miles east to the town of
Hannibal, in Mississippi. Mark kept to himself and in doors in his early years because of poor health
and sickness. That was the case until he became years of age. He recovered from his illness and started
playing outside with the rest of the children. Growing up his Father was a judge and worked a lot. He
also attended private school. Sadly, when Mark was 12, his dad had pneumonia and he later died. He
took it really hard and left school. At 13 Mark became a printer s apprentice. He and started working
with his brother newspaper as an editorial assistant. That s exactly when he learned he enjoyed
writing.
When he turned 17, he left the town Hannibal to be a printer in St. Louis. As Mark became settled in
St. Louis, he changed his plan and became a river pilot apprentice. In 1858 he finally got his license as
an river pilot. The nick name Mark Twain came about from his time spent as a river pilot. It has been
said that it is a river term which means two fathoms or 12 ft. when the depth of water is being sounded
and measured. MarkTwain actually means that is safe to navigate . Mark got his big break in 1861
when the river trade were brought to an standstill by the Civil War. Mark would began working as a

The Three Gorges Of The Yangtze River In China
At first I ll have a brief introduction of Yangtze River, the Yangtze River, the biggest river in China,
the third longest in the World, starts with the Tuotuo River at the Roof of the World Qinghai Tibet
Plateau, takes in countless rivers, and flows eastward across the interior of China. With an overall
length of more than 6,300 kilometers, the Yangtze River, next only to the Amazon and the Nile, is the
third biggest river in the world and is a cradle that breeds the ancient civilization of the Chinese
nation.
When the Yangtze River reaches the eastern Sichuan Basin in southwest China, it cuts through the
Wushan Mountain. Here the river course suddenly narrows and the waters become turbulent. Sheer
cliffs and steep mountains rise on either side, creating one of nature s most fantastic sights. The Three
Gorges Qutang, Wuxia and Xiling start just after Fengjie and end near Yichang, stretch about 200
kilometers. The Gorges vary from 300metres at their widest to less than 100 meters at their narrowest.
Qutang Gorge is the smallest and shortest Gorge, but grandest of the three. The Yangtze River, mighty
and rapid here is suddenly contained like a thousand seas poured into one cup , as the Song Dynasty
poet SU Tungpo described the spectacle. High on the both bank, at a place called Bellows Gorge, are a
series of crevices. This area is said to have been the home of an ancient tribe whose custom was to

because of this I remember scanning through majors that didn t fit all my interests simultaneously. For

Liberal Education isn t focused on the political aspect of liberalism, however focuses on liberating its
students by giving students space to explore their passions deeply. This exploration cannot happen in
an education program that is built off of individualism and its exclusivity must constantly be
challenged. As Cronon states, We should remember the powerful class and gender biases that were
built into this vision of freedom. The free man who studied the Liberal Arts were male aristocrats;
these specialized bodies of knowledge were status markers that set them apart from unfree serfs and
peasants, as well as from the members of other vulgar and ignoble classes. Our modern sense of
Liberal Education has expanded from this medieval foundation to include a greater range of human
talents and a much more inclusive number of human beings, holding out at least the dream that
everyone might someday be liberated by an education that stands in the service of human freedom
(Olejarz, 2017). Liberal Education isn t about mastering a particular subject. Instead Liberal Education
is about mastering positive characteristics that foster a deeper sense of personal identity and cultivate
human freedom. When the debate between STEM and Liberal Education arise the underlying

Wellness Is An Important Aspect Of Wellness
Wellness is the state of being in optimal health and well being. It encompasses the body, mind, and
spirit which are integrated by an individual to live life more fully within the human and the
community or else the environment. Being in a state of well being individual s joy and happiness is
seen in the lives of the people. Less stress is experienced when wellness prevails. Wellness is an
indication of an individual s quality of life which has been used to show how individuals are satisfied
with life. Their productivity also depends on how well they are because being unwell will decrease
productivity. Happiness is an important aspect of wellness because happiness is a positive energy that
will lead to an increased energy level. The physical, emotional and mental well being will all depend
on the state of the body, mind and spirit. There some indicators of wellness in an individual such as
personality characteristics, lifestyle influences and behaviors. Other wellness indicators which have
been proposed include having enough energy, maintaining one s independence, satisfying and
supportive relationships, and positive thinking.
Promoting well being always encompasses an individual s physical, mental, and social resources and
promotes protective factors and conditions that foster health. The healthy people 2020 have defined
well being as a way to have resistance on diseases and to manage ourselves towards contraction of

Merchant Of Venice Quotes
Merchant of Venice
Zackyia
Shakespeare s plays are an important part of history. They re spectacular tales, they proposed phrases
that we still use today, and they re a huge part of our culture. All of Shakespeare s plays are full of so
many well written quotes that can be expanded on in so many ways. One of these plays is The
Merchant of Venice, despite being filled with tons of wonderful quotes there s one in particular that
caught my eye.
In one of the scenes there s the character Jessica who s dressed up as a boy. She is embarrassed by her
apparel but she says But love is blind, and lovers cannot see The pretty follies themselves commit.
This quote represents that she is confident that her lover Lorenzo still loves her despite of her
appearance. In this scene Jessica has also just stole money and jewelry from her father Shylock. The
thievery and the fact she s dressed up as a boy may refer to The pretty follies she mentions.
Love is blind is a phrase that is still frequently used today, it is a wonderful example of a metaphor
and personification. Love is a concept not a person so that s where the personification comes in. It s a
metaphor because it figuratively compares love to being blind. When Jessica states that ... Show more

Another example of blind love in this play is Launcelot and his father Old Gobbo. Old Gobbo was
literally a blind man who was going to give a gift to Launcelot s (past) master Shylock. This was to
show his appreciation for Shylock taking care of his son. Even though Launcelot played pranks on his

The Importance Of European Imperialism In The Congo
Between the years 1884 1912, European powers were in competition to acquire African colonies. This
was the emergence of the new age of imperialism and what historians refer to as the scramble for
Africa. By the end of the 19th century, all of Africa with the exception of Liberia and Ethiopia was
divided amongst European powers. During that time, the Belgium government had no interest in
imperializing Africa except for their King, Leopold II. Due to lack of support from the Belgium
government, King Leopold independently gained private possession of the Congo. While King
Leopold embodied the ideas of imperialism, he did not effectively demonstrate the civilized mission,
but instead exploited workers in desperation to acquire imperial power. The atrocities committed
under his rule went unacknowledged for decades until the publication of reports exposed the atrocities
in the Congo. The widespread exposure King Leopold was a catalyst in his removal. King Leopold
claimed his interest in the Congo was motivated by the desire to extend the benefits of European
civilization to Africa. This ideology is referred to as the civilizing mission the belief that it is
Europeans duty and responsibility to bring forth civilization to non European nations. Leopold hoped
to achieve this by establishing trade relations for which the people of Belgium and the Congo could
benefit. The civilized mission was justification for European imperialism, and for this reason, he
received support from

The Problem With Body Dysmorphic Disorder ( Bdd )
Concerns about one s own appearance are not uncommon. The majority of people that dislike a certain
aspect of their appearance may occasionally refer to it negatively and leave it at that, whereas
someone with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) will refer to their perceived flaws so much so that it
affects their life on a daily basis (The BDD Alliance, 2016). About 1.7% to 2.4% of the general
population is affected by BDD, meaning that about 1 in 50 people have the disorder (Phillips, n.d.).
Fortunately, there is a generous amount of information available about the history of BDD, which
includes its causes, effects, treatments, and much more. History The earliest documentation of BDD
was made by Italian psychiatrist Enrico Morselli in 1891 (Vashi, 2015). He referred to it as
dysmorphophobia , derived from the Greek word dysmorfia dys meaning abnormal and morfia
meaning shape (Phillips, 2009). In one of Morselli s papers, he described BDD as: [...] the sudden
appearance and fixation in the consciousness of the idea of one s own deformity; the individual fears
that he has become deformed [...] or might become deformed, and experiences at this thought a feeling
of an inexpressible disaster. ( History of Body Dysmorphic Disorder , n.d.) While a lot has changed
during the century since Morselli documented BDD, the specifics of the disorder have remained
relatively the same. Causes A variety of theories have been proposed to explain the source of BDD,

Amy Tan Mother Tongue Analysis
Novelist and essayist, Amy Tan, in her essay, Mother Tongue , emphasizes the hardships faced by
those who speak with limited English. Tan strives to broaden awareness of the damaging stereotypes
thrown upon those with limited English, creating a personal and reflective tone that develops her
attitude toward her mother. Tan uses connotative diction to develop her attitudes towards her mother.
As a child, Tan was ashamed of her mother s English. But as she grew, she came to the realization that
she, in fact, uses the same English her own mother uses. Her relationship with her mother strained due
to the boundaries of language. Tan s mother s broken English causes tension and resentment from
daughter to mother. Tan s regrettable experiences, helping her mother with phone calls and
appointments, led her to have a negative attitude towards her mother at an early age. As Tan grew up
she realized the injustices found in the world, especially those directed at broken English. Her
perception of her mother changes as she ages. When she is older, she is conscious of the struggles her
mother faces. She exudes all respect to her mother, for her mother s English was the most familiar
rhythm she has ever come to know. Tan also uses oxymora to develop her attitudes in her
mother/daughter relationship. Tan sees that her mother s speech is Impeccably broken, . To be
impeccable is to be of the highest standards. To be impeccable is to be faultless; flawless. Tan views
her mother s English to be so flawlessly broken that no one can fix it. This one oxymoron contributes
to the entire piece, fitting in the crevices. Tan, at an early age, was ashamed of her mother s English,
the sentence structure and simple word choice, because it was broken. The oxymora in this piece
reflect the idea of the stereotypes drawn from society. Those who do not speak perfect English are not
validated. For Tan s mother s speech was so flawlessly unfixable, that it was unable to be understood.
A reader would think that those words are contradictory, that something flawless could not be broken
or shattered, but indeed can. Because something so broken, can be so flawless because it s as broken
as it can possibly be. Tan uses

Positive And Negative Effects Of Colonialism In Africa
Africa, although it is the mother of all the continents and is the origin of humankind, is considered the
most misunderstood continent that has gone through centuries of strife and exploitation from other
countries all over the world. Since the beginning of slavery in Africa in the medieval times, many
changes in Africa have occurred in a social and economic standpoint in relations to other countries and
within the native land itself by causing colonialism, which is the process of taking control of another
area politically while also using their land. Colonialism has had a negative effect on Africa both
socially, politically, and economically and can be fixed with the help of other countries. Africa in and
of itself was the mighty continent before slavery and colonialism. Africa serves as the Mater
Hominum and the Mater Continentium, or the creator of the first humans and the mother continent. It
is regarded in the book African Foreign Policy and Diplomacy from Antiquity to the 21st Century,
written by Dr. Daniel Don Nanjira, that Africa is the first cradle of the humankind, which makes it the
only continent in the world to have the whole human species inhabit the area for at least 5 million
years running (Nanjira 7). Therefore, Africa is revered as the first continent in existence for the world
and is the oldest place of human life which in turn illustrates the value and true importance of the land
and people that have for so long been disregarded and corrupted. Before the use of slavery and
colonialism, African had flourishing and prosperous civilizations that been first established in the Nile
River valley like the Kingdoms of Kerma in the ancient region of Nubia. There are also many other
empires that have been known all over Africa such as the Aksumite, Mali, and Luba empires. These
Kingdom s once prospered before or during slavery and colonialism and had their own cultures and
significant contributions to civilization. The Kingdom of Kerma was established in the northern part
of Sudan in 2500 BC and ended in 1500 BC after the Egyptian invasion of the country after they had
already invaded neighboring lands and allianced states or cities. It is one of the many Kingdoms found

Osteoarthritis Site Analysis
Analysis of osteoarthritis for each site was conducted in order to determine whether any of the joint
changes in the skeletal remains might indicate changes in physical activity levels before and after
colonization. To better ascertain the differences in the colonial eras, the prehistoric burials from
Corinth and Apollonia were separated from the colonial periods. Even though every site has
individuals of indeterminate sex only a comparison between those individuals for whom sex could be
reasonably estimated was done.
It is instructive to examine the occurrence of osteoarthritis on both the right and left sides of the body.
My initial assessment showed that there are no appreciable differences by side of any given joint;
therefore, only the left side is used for analysis (Table 4). Osteoarthritis of the vertebrae obviously
does not have a side, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthritis is simply counted as a single joint.
Examination of Table 4 indicates that there is a relatively high prevalence of osteoarthritis in three
particular joints; the hip, thoracic vertebrae, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

individuals with the higher prevalence of osteoarthritis occur in the Middle age category at Apollonia,
Epidamnus, Corinth, and Lofkënd. Individuals in the Older adult category were impacted more by
osteoarthritis in prehistoric Apollonia. Unexpectedly, prehistoric Corinth remains show an equal
frequency of osteoarthritis occurring in the Young and Middle age adult groups (Figure 9).
Unfortunately, prehistoric Corinth had a very small sample size and this sample may not accurately

Essay on Mitigating Disasters in Developing Countries

populations, and which have, in most cases a medium to low standard of living. There is a strong
correlation between low income and high population growth In today s globalized nation, countries

Most developing countries, especially the smaller states were once colonized by Western industrial
states and hence, have felt the impact of exploitation and deprivation from their strong colonial

developed nations, hence the tardiness in their developmental process. One tend to get the feeling that
there is some amount of inferiority among the citizens of developing countries as they have inherited

Case Study Of Drosophila
Drosophila melanogaster: a case study of embryonic cell differentiation
Introduction: The study of Drosophila has brought great leaps of scientific research with it. As
unlikely a candidate they are, studies of Drosophila melanogaster have done much in the way of
proving theories, discovering genetically identifiable diseases and much more. Over the past three
decades, research on this species has lead researchers to question the developmental processes that
Drosophila experience (Bürglin 2016). The embryonic development of Drosophila serves as an
important case study for developmental genetics, due to the analogous nature of their embryos cell
differentiation. Although Drosophila s development has very distinct variations when compared to that
of vertebrates, there is a commonality between the embryonic development of the nervous system. The
similarity between Drosophila and vertebrates gives reason to research the Homeobox genes in order
to better understand a multitude of species with homologous development. In particular, the nervous

Although Amanita phalloide resembles a small and adorable umbrella, its dreadful virulence is
extremely hazardous. Amanita phalloides is one of the most poisonous of all known toadstools and it
is estimated that only half a mushroom contains enough toxin to kill an adult person. It has proved that
possibly the deaths of Roman Emperor Claudius in AD 54 and Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI in
1740 is caused by it. The principal toxic constituent is α amanitin, a highly stable protein that the body
has great difficulty in completely eliminating, which damages the liver and kidneys, causing hepatic
and renal failure that can be fatal. The specific reason why alpha amanitin has such strong effect is
that it is a potent inhibitor of DNA dependent RNA polymerase II. It obstructs the formation of
mRNA, eventually stops the constitution of protein and induces apoptosis especially in ... Show more

A new helpful treatment for amatoxin poisonings is intravenous silibinin, a derivative of milk thistle.
Silibinin protects the liver by preventing the uptake of amatoxin by the liver cells. Once the amatoxins
are eliminated from the body, the liver can quickly recover. [4] Nevertheless, Amanita phalloide, such
an incredibly toxic mushroom, becomes an important study object in MD Anderson Cancer Center
which might be used to cure cancer. It is also unimaginable that α amanitin is the main substance used
in α amanitin based antibody drug, which have positive application. In fact, amanitin, as a highly toxic
peptide that is produced by the death cap and that selectively inhibits mammalian RNA polymerase
[5], contains many categories (α amanitin, β amanitin, γ amanitin and ε Amanitin). α amanitin is a
cyclic peptide of eight amino acids, as the graph

Feudalism the legal and social system that evolved in Western Europe in the 8th and 9th centuries, in
which vassals were protected and maintained by their lords, usually through the granting of fiefs, and
were required to serve under them in war. During 476 to the 1100 s feudalism appeared from Europe
starting with France all the way to Japan, so what were the characteristics of feudalism where it began
compared to the last place it was, Japan.
Feudalism The first sign of feudalism was in Normans, France. It began in France then moved to
Germany, Spain, Italy, Russia, and Japan. Feudalism was very decentralized causing it to be unstable.

Knights often did attack peasants destroying the farms that they were living off of and ransacking the
homes of the villagers. Samurai didn t receive any land for their service they only received some grain
as payment, but Knights gained a considerable amount of land with some Serfs that had to work the

Joshua by Joseph F. Girzone
JOSHUA by Joseph F. Girzone
A Book Report
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Joseph Francis Girzone is a priest. Advised by his doctor to withdraw from administrative work, he
immediately set about a new career as a writer and philosopher. Though only 54 years old at the time
he wrote the book, his experience as a priest had been unusual. He worked with teenage gangs in New
York, and in the local mining area of Pennsylvania. He taught in schools most of his life, and worked
in parishes at the same time. He was chairman of a government human rights commission which
settled a jail riot and mediated racial tensions in public schools. On numerous occasions, he was called
upon to negotiate in prison disturbances.
Girzone has become very well known ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He was the object of curiosity, because no one knew anything about him. There was something that
magnetized him, and drew the people to him. To everyone, Joshua was a simple woodcarver, but at the
same time not so simple. He was God s Son, but no one suspected. Joshua was friendly with everyone.
They talked with him about everything. He was very intelligent and almost everyone liked him.
Mainly he talked about religion, the religion that Jesus taught, a religion of freedom and without
authority. Many people agreed with him, but a few strongly disagreed: some priests, pastors, bishops
and clergy in general. As a result of this disagreement, things became very difficult for Joshua. He had
to go to Rome to a congregation of bishops for a proceeding against him. He told the bishops what he
believed. After the proceeding he simply went away, without saying anything to anybody. The bishops
voted for censure. The bishops agreed that Joshua showed a hostile attitude towards authority, that his
criticism lacked understanding of the realities of life and the authority of Christ on earth. Joshua had
to cease talking about these matters to the faithful, under penalty of further censure. But Joshua had
disappeared already. His mission was over, so he went

The Adequate Heuristic And The Self-Fulfilling Pi
While many functions of the self are useful others can cause repercussions, such as the availability
heuristic and the self fulfilling prophecy. To further explain the effects, I will use an example about a
girl named Susie whom is about to take her midterm. Susie heard that female students have more
difficulty with math than male students leading her to believe she will fail, when in all actuality her
failure could probably be attributed to the availability heuristic and self fulfilling prophecy.
The availability heuristic more than likely added to her worry as it is known as the mental rule of
thumb that creates judgments based on how easily available the information is within the mind. Susie
heard that female students had more difficulty

  • 2. AIDS Epidemic In 1980s America Exploring the AIDS Epidemic in 1980s America Angels in America examines the spread AIDS throughout the 1980s and the ways that people reacted towards it. It s a serious play about politics, history, spirituality, and death...It was not only an attack on 1980s Reaganism, but also on the conservative movement of the U.S. politics and culture since the end of World War II (Bronski 58). Angels in America represents an act of resistance and asks the audience whether change is possible. This question takes on a whole new meaning for the audience, who has the added benefit of hindsight. We are able to see the ways in which this process occurs and cultural productions are not only ideas, but have a reality in the way that they are played out on the bodies of the characters. We are able to see that the way that disease is conceptualized directly impacts the response of the government and the medical community to the disease, the types of support made available to people afflicted by disease and the various amounts of oppression or discrimination that they may encounter in their everyday lives as a result. Ideas about homosexuality and AIDS affect the type of treatment that Prior receives and the way that his loved ones interact with him. The 1980s were particularly devastating for the gay men. 1985 marked the beginning of President Reagan s second term. Reagan is mentioned several times over the course of part 1 not only to set a political backdrop for the series, but also challenges the audience to question why the government was so slow to respond to this issue. Reagan didn t even give his first speech on HIV/AIDS until years after the on start of the epidemic and after thousands of lives had been lost. In this context, it is fair to assume that HIV/AIDS really became an epidemic through the lack of immediate action from the government and medical establishments that can be directly attributed to homophobic. From its onset, there was widespread fear of contamination as AIDS was constructed as a fatal infectious disease that threatened to wipe out mankind. It was also seen as a gay plague or punishment for sexually abnormal behavior. Angels in America is not merely a political critique, but an act of political resistance and a beacon of hope. In the final scene, Prior delivers a stirring monologue, the audience sees that we are not doomed to repeat the mistakes of our past. It takes place in 1990, Prior ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

That war a prolonged, intermittent conflict between the two noble houses of York and Lancaster; the play chronicles the bloody deeds and atrocities perpetrated by its central figure the murderous and tyrannical King Richard III. After a long war between the noble houses of York and Lancaster, England is at peace under the ruling of King Edward IV and the victorious family of York. Hope with good cause is swift; it flies as fast as a swallow. Hope that their hope would fly fast as like a swallow and it will come true. And it did come true. Richmond killed Richard III and became the king. Richard III opens in 1483 with the title character delivering one of Shakespeare s most famous soliloquies. • 5. Japan And China Relations During The End Of World War II Japan and China have been in cold relations ever since the end of World War II. After the war, there was barely any diplomacy to bring together their relation. Not until 1972 Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka of Japan visited China with an official invitation. At the scene, both sides were willing for reconciliation and normalization, result with the Joint Communique between two governments. From that moment on, the (economic) relations of the two nations has been reestablished, encouraged and developed rapidly (China, Japan Joint Communique, 1972). There is an opinion that China s incredible (economic) developing rate has greatly influenced Japan diplomatic with Beijing since that time. And this essay is going to support this argument with data as well as historical and contemporary context. First, energy requirement is usually critical to the development and modernization of China and the stabilization of Japan. Many of the individuals we presented to operated under the widely held assumption that organizations which act virtuously and do the right thing are at a competitive disadvantage to those that do not. We delivered the good news that this is largely incorrect. For instance, organizations with higher perceived levels of virtuousness have much higher profitability (Cameron, Bright, Caza, 2004), and CEOs who rated high on four moral principles integrity, responsibility, forgiveness, and compassion had an average return on assets of 9.35 versus 1.93 for those with low ratings (Leadership: Measuring the return on character, 2015). Research on social networks demonstrates that the people you spend time with shape your emotional state, your values, and your actions (Christakis Fowler, 2009). Furthermore, research has identified a cluster of organizational values that promote virtuousness and are closely related to the four moral principles held by CEOs in high performing organizations: contribution, trust, compassion, integrity, and forgiveness (Cameron, Bright, Caza, 2004; Keane). We reinforced this message by emphasizing that individuals and organizations are providing themselves with a rare source of sustainable competitive advantage when acting virtuously and enabling virtuousness within the organization. Indeed, you can do well by doing good. Approach versus Avoidance Goals and Organizational Policy. We summarized the research findings on goal orientation to introduce the basic idea that focusing on what you do not want (not breaking the law and going to prison, in this context) is an ineffective way to get what you do want (flourishing in life, for example). To demonstrate that this is more than semantics, we often ask the participants to take a few moments and visualize a life of not going to prison. The responses were always revealing: participants consistently reported not seeing much of anything when attempting to visualize this obvious don t want, illustrating the brain s inability to mentally represent avoidance goals. The author uses beauty and aesthetics in ways such as, the night life in the city, the relationships between the characters in Dancer from the Dance, the clothing that the character s wear, and the way each character looks. The characters in Dancer from the Dance feel like themselves when they are able to dress, act, and go places where they won t be judged by others. The author shows the reader that during the day the characters have to hide who they really are so that they won t be judged by society, but at night the characters are free to do what they want and won t be judged for it because they will be with others like themselves. The characters do the things that they do because that is who they are, and there is beauty in those things. The characters in Dancer from the Dance dress in normal clothing during the day so that they can fit into society. One of the main characters in the novel is Andrew Sutherland. Andrew Sutherland dresses as a drag queen at night when he goes out to gay bars at night. He dresses as drag queen because that makes him feel like himself. For some gay males, clothing is a semiotic marker for identity creation. (Schofield). Sutherland is a man that has money and a sense for fashion. • 12. Surgical Site Infections At Hospitals, Accreditation... Surgical site infections occur when a patient experiences infection following surgery, often as a direct result of the care received in a hospital or other medical facility. While these infections can often be easily treated while the patient is still at the hospital, the incidences of these infections can have significant and lasting impacts on patients and the hospital itself, even resulting in a patient s death if the infection is not detected and treated appropriately. Since these infections occur while patients are under the care of professionals and during hospital stays, it is imperative that all involved in patient care follow procedures and policies established by the facility to reduce the risk of infections in patients. This involves not only information about surgical site infections and their prevention, but the impact of these infections on patients, hospitals, and staff members, as well as how surgical site infections impacts a facility s accreditation. The purpose of this paper is to discuss surgical site infections, the implications of their occurrences at hospitals, accreditation expectations, and outcomes related to cost and quality. Surgical Site Infection A surgical site infection is, quite simply, an infection that occurs at a surgical incision point following a surgical procedure (Nursing Standard, 2013). Analysis Of A Thousand And One Nights A Thousand and One Nights is a tale about the over sexed east which is favored by the sexually repressed west when applied to and analyzed under the lens of Orientalism. This translation of the text, while not as sexually explicit as Sir Richard Burton s translation, has its fair amount of sexual promiscuity which paints the middle eastern characters as dishonest, violent, and sexually deviant. These traits were seen as socially taboo to the west, especially those in Victorian Europe who helped the tale gain its reputation as a popular exotic story. The two main scenes where these traits come into play both take place within A Thousand and One Nights frame story with Shahrayar and Shahzarman. Shahzarman kills his adulterous wife and her lover then leaves to visit Shahrayar in his kingdom. When Shahrayar s wife and servants are caught in the act they are killed and Shahrayar vows to kill his future brides on their wedding nights which is when Shahrazad attempts to bring him to his senses. The two brothers are extremely hot headed and violent and their wives are plagued by insatiable lust, which plays into the sexually charged barbarity perpetuated by Orientalism. Throughout this paper I will be using Edward Said s definition of Orientalism. In order to understand why murders occur one must understand the motivations present and be able to classify them as instrumental or expressive. In the case of Joseph Ortiz, a member of the 500 Block street gang, he was motivated to kill by gain and anger. When applying criminological theories one must consider all aspects of the case at hand. No perfect theory exists to explain every homicide. Many believe that differential association and neutralization theory explain many aspects of gang homicides, such as the one Ortiz committed. Both criminology theories both fall under the positivists school of thought, which highlights the importance of social and cultural influences (Wood Alleyne, 2010). Neutralization and differential association theories oppose classical school of thought because they state that killers are not born. Furthermore, both theories are social process theories and involving the learning process along with the effect of external influences on individuals behavior (Wood Alleyne, 2010). Neutralization theory is actually an extension of differential association theory. Both theories deal with attitudes and values that influence perceptions, which drives one to criminal acts such as homicide in the case of Mr. Ortiz. The process of learning techniques is another similarity among these theories. Indeed both theories are used to learn how and when to commit homicide. Personal group influences, whether criminal or not, also play a role in each theory. Personal group influences can include close family members, relatives, friends or peers. Inappropriate socialization is also a contributor to non conventional acts. Both theories explain the reasons that led to the murders of rival street gang members and how they were learned. Analysis Of Gloria Naylor Being A Chink By Christine Leong Barber, Patrick 2 APEL III 14 November 2014 Mommy What Does Nigger Mean by Gloria Naylor Being a Chink by Christine Leong Questions on Meaning 1. Naylor believes that written language is inferior to spoken language because it cannot capture the essence of life. For example Naylor writes I consider the written word inferior to the spoken, and much of the frustration experienced by novelists is the awareness that whatever we manage to capture even in the most transcendent passages falls far short of the richness of life. Naylor continues on to comment on the dynamics of dialogue and the senses experienced in each moment to express the idea that writing can never capture all the thoughts, senses, and environment occurring when someone is speaking. 2. Naylor never heard the word nigger before until she heard it in the tone that the white third grader used. She had heard the word before but only when it was used a compliment or for grouping a group of people. While the white third grader used the negative connotation of it as a derogatory term to insult her simply based on her race. 3. Naylor means that word nigger was changed from derogatory term used by racist whites to subject African Americans based on their previous mistreatment to a term used by the African Americans to each other to compliment one s actions. • 16. Material Properties Of Steel Iron Material Properties of Steel Steel is an alloy of iron, with carbon being the primary solute in the solid solution. It is a polycrystalline solid with grain diameter from 10 to 20 micro meter (Ashby et al). The presence of impurity like carbon causes the crystal lattice distortions to increase, hence making giving steel better hardness, yield strength, and tensile strength, at the cost of ductility. Pure iron being very ductile but comparatively weak, steel is widely because of its greater load bearing capacity. Other impurities are also introduced into steel to produce different properties. Materials like chromium, vanadium, titanium, boron etc. are added to steel to give it better corrosion resistance, hardness, tensile strength and better fatigue response (Smith et al). Elements like carbon and nitrogen form take up interstitial spaces between the iron atoms owing to their reduced atomic size (Smith et al). Elements with larger atoms like nickel, chromium, aluminium, sulphur, phosphorus etc. act as substitutional elements (Smith et al). Although, the inclusion of various alloying elements do alter the material property and the crystalline structure, material property of basic steel can be understood by analyzing various phases of iron and carbon solid solution. Considering the structural differences in steel it can be differentiated into austentic, ferretic and martensitic. It differs from static equilibrium in that species are constantly being consumed and produced, it is dynamic movement (Fox). • 20. Theme Of Jealousy In A Separate Peace Human nature is notorious for its trait of jealousy. One may grow hostile when he desperately seeks another s possession or talent. This statement is evident in the character of Gene from John Knowles A Separate Peace. Throughout the story, he is jealous because his friend, Finny, has exceptional athletic ability. After one regretful action from Gene, Finny starts facing tough circumstances, eventually separating them. A Separate Peace by John Knowles, Gene demonstrates how envy can tear friendships apart. First, Gene admits to being guilty of shaking a tree in order to injure Finny when he visits him at his home, making Finny livid, and temporarily tearing them apart. Gene is envious of Finny s athletic ability and bravery. One way Finny shows his bravery is by jumping off a tree for fun. Gene is greatly threatened by the bravery, so he decides to strip it from Finny by shaking the tree one day, making him fall and suffer an injury. Consequently, he instantly regrets his decision, but he realizes that the damage is done. Remorsefully, he wants to apologize for his terrible choice, but when he tries to talk about the situation and confess, Finny is in denial and starts to get angry. Finny s denial is evident when he says I don t know anything. Go away. I m tired and you make me sick. Go away (Knowles 70). This dialogue shows how Finny did not believe that Gene caused the incident even after the confession. This is because he believes that Gene would not do such an action. The confession tears Finny apart to the point that he lashes out at Gene and wants him to leave his house. If Gene did not commit the notorious action, Finny would not have to feel the pain physically from the injury, and mentally from the idea that Gene would hurt him, and the boys could have a stronger friendship. Second, the injury puts Finny in the hospital, separating the two, which cause Gene to suffer depression. As Finny is badly wounded, he has to leave his boarding school, Devon, for a long period of time. He spends his time in the hospital, away from Gene. The Internal Production Spaces Of Large Cities This same logic leads not just towards generalized urban agglomeration but to the emergence of multiple dense industrial districts within the metropolis. The internal production spaces of large cities are composed of mosaics of particular kinds of industrial land use focused on localized nodal clusters comprising activities that range from manufacturing to office and service functions. For example, gun and jewellery manufacturing in Birmingham, England; footwear industry of East London; clothing production of New York City; motor vehicle industry of Tokyo; and office functions in modern metropolis illustrate different aspects of the theory of industrial organization and location. They represent especially clear cases of the internal specialization of parts of the production space of the large metropolis. As such, they illustrate both, the generality of the problem of agglomeration and the wide diversity of concrete forms that it can assume under different conjectural circumstances. The metropolis and the neighbourhood can be linked to the Chicago school of urban sociology, which has developed ethnographic studies based on various ethnic neighbourhoods over several decades. For millennia, schools of philosophy have investigated these questions and attempted to answer them by devising complex philosophies, which were in some cases completely alien to our modern ideas. In this essay, I will discuss the Egyptian, Taoist, and Aristotelian views on the soul s function and composition during life. Then, I will compare these philosophies and discuss which aspects of each philosophy I find the most plausible from a realist s point of view. Concerning the composition and function of the soul, I argue that the Aristotelian and Taoist philosophies are equally plausible, but that the Egyptian philosophy also had plausible aspects. Ultimately, however, it is difficult to determine which theory the most plausible (from a realist s perspective) without tackling the bigger question does the soul exist? The ancient Egyptians were soul dualists, meaning that they believed that a person had two or more souls (in this case nine).1 In Egypt, one of the main purposes of the nine souls was to help the deceased reach the afterlife. 2 In fact, the Egyptians believed that some souls only existed after death, but I will not discuss these in this paper. When I was seventeen these weren t the words I used to describe my interests in continuing education and because of this I remember scanning through majors that didn t fit all my interests simultaneously. Liberal Education isn t focused on the political aspect of liberalism, however focuses on liberating its students by giving students space to explore their passions deeply. This exploration cannot happen in an education program that is built off of individualism and its exclusivity must constantly be challenged. As Cronon states, We should remember the powerful class and gender biases that were built into this vision of freedom. The free man who studied the Liberal Arts were male aristocrats; these specialized bodies of knowledge were status markers that set them apart from unfree serfs and peasants, as well as from the members of other vulgar and ignoble classes. Our modern sense of Liberal Education has expanded from this medieval foundation to include a greater range of human talents and a much more inclusive number of human beings, holding out at least the dream that everyone might someday be liberated by an education that stands in the service of human freedom (Olejarz, 2017). Liberal Education isn t about mastering a particular subject. Instead Liberal Education is about mastering positive characteristics that foster a deeper sense of personal identity and cultivate human freedom. • 30. Merchant Of Venice Quotes Merchant of Venice Zackyia Shakespeare s plays are an important part of history. They re spectacular tales, they proposed phrases that we still use today, and they re a huge part of our culture. All of Shakespeare s plays are full of so many well written quotes that can be expanded on in so many ways. One of these plays is The Merchant of Venice, despite being filled with tons of wonderful quotes there s one in particular that caught my eye. In one of the scenes there s the character Jessica who s dressed up as a boy. She is embarrassed by her apparel but she says But love is blind, and lovers cannot see The pretty follies themselves commit. This quote represents that she is confident that her lover Lorenzo still loves her despite of her appearance. In this scene Jessica has also just stole money and jewelry from her father Shylock. The thievery and the fact she s dressed up as a boy may refer to The pretty follies she mentions. Love is blind is a phrase that is still frequently used today, it is a wonderful example of a metaphor and personification. Love is a concept not a person so that s where the personification comes in. It s a metaphor because it figuratively compares love to being blind. When Jessica states that ... • 31. The Importance Of European Imperialism In The Congo Between the years 1884 1912, European powers were in competition to acquire African colonies. This was the emergence of the new age of imperialism and what historians refer to as the scramble for Africa. By the end of the 19th century, all of Africa with the exception of Liberia and Ethiopia was divided amongst European powers. During that time, the Belgium government had no interest in imperializing Africa except for their King, Leopold II. Due to lack of support from the Belgium government, King Leopold independently gained private possession of the Congo. While King Leopold embodied the ideas of imperialism, he did not effectively demonstrate the civilized mission, but instead exploited workers in desperation to acquire imperial power. The atrocities committed under his rule went unacknowledged for decades until the publication of reports exposed the atrocities in the Congo. The widespread exposure King Leopold was a catalyst in his removal. King Leopold claimed his interest in the Congo was motivated by the desire to extend the benefits of European civilization to Africa. This ideology is referred to as the civilizing mission the belief that it is Europeans duty and responsibility to bring forth civilization to non European nations. Leopold hoped to achieve this by establishing trade relations for which the people of Belgium and the Congo could benefit. The civilized mission was justification for European imperialism, and for this reason, he received support from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. The Problem With Body Dysmorphic Disorder ( Bdd ) Concerns about one s own appearance are not uncommon. The majority of people that dislike a certain aspect of their appearance may occasionally refer to it negatively and leave it at that, whereas someone with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) will refer to their perceived flaws so much so that it affects their life on a daily basis (The BDD Alliance, 2016). About 1.7% to 2.4% of the general population is affected by BDD, meaning that about 1 in 50 people have the disorder (Phillips, n.d.). Fortunately, there is a generous amount of information available about the history of BDD, which includes its causes, effects, treatments, and much more. History The earliest documentation of BDD was made by Italian psychiatrist Enrico Morselli in 1891 (Vashi, 2015). He referred to it as dysmorphophobia , derived from the Greek word dysmorfia dys meaning abnormal and morfia meaning shape (Phillips, 2009). In one of Morselli s papers, he described BDD as: [...] the sudden appearance and fixation in the consciousness of the idea of one s own deformity; the individual fears that he has become deformed [...] or might become deformed, and experiences at this thought a feeling of an inexpressible disaster. ( History of Body Dysmorphic Disorder , n.d.) While a lot has changed during the century since Morselli documented BDD, the specifics of the disorder have remained relatively the same. • 33. Amy Tan Mother Tongue Analysis Novelist and essayist, Amy Tan, in her essay, Mother Tongue , emphasizes the hardships faced by those who speak with limited English. Tan strives to broaden awareness of the damaging stereotypes thrown upon those with limited English, creating a personal and reflective tone that develops her attitude toward her mother. Tan uses connotative diction to develop her attitudes towards her mother. As a child, Tan was ashamed of her mother s English. But as she grew, she came to the realization that she, in fact, uses the same English her own mother uses. Her relationship with her mother strained due to the boundaries of language. Tan s mother s broken English causes tension and resentment from daughter to mother. Tan s regrettable experiences, helping her mother with phone calls and appointments, led her to have a negative attitude towards her mother at an early age. As Tan grew up she realized the injustices found in the world, especially those directed at broken English. Her perception of her mother changes as she ages. When she is older, she is conscious of the struggles her mother faces. She exudes all respect to her mother, for her mother s English was the most familiar rhythm she has ever come to know. Tan also uses oxymora to develop her attitudes in her mother/daughter relationship. Tan sees that her mother s speech is Impeccably broken, . To be impeccable is to be of the highest standards. To be impeccable is to be faultless; flawless. Tan views her mother s English to be so flawlessly broken that no one can fix it. This one oxymoron contributes to the entire piece, fitting in the crevices. Tan, at an early age, was ashamed of her mother s English, the sentence structure and simple word choice, because it was broken. The oxymora in this piece reflect the idea of the stereotypes drawn from society. Those who do not speak perfect English are not validated. For Tan s mother s speech was so flawlessly unfixable, that it was unable to be understood. A reader would think that those words are contradictory, that something flawless could not be broken or shattered, but indeed can. Because something so broken, can be so flawless because it s as broken as it can possibly be. Tan uses ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Positive And Negative Effects Of Colonialism In Africa Africa, although it is the mother of all the continents and is the origin of humankind, is considered the most misunderstood continent that has gone through centuries of strife and exploitation from other countries all over the world. Since the beginning of slavery in Africa in the medieval times, many changes in Africa have occurred in a social and economic standpoint in relations to other countries and within the native land itself by causing colonialism, which is the process of taking control of another area politically while also using their land. Colonialism has had a negative effect on Africa both socially, politically, and economically and can be fixed with the help of other countries. Africa in and of itself was the mighty continent before slavery and colonialism. Africa serves as the Mater Hominum and the Mater Continentium, or the creator of the first humans and the mother continent. It is regarded in the book African Foreign Policy and Diplomacy from Antiquity to the 21st Century, written by Dr. Daniel Don Nanjira, that Africa is the first cradle of the humankind, which makes it the only continent in the world to have the whole human species inhabit the area for at least 5 million years running (Nanjira 7). Therefore, Africa is revered as the first continent in existence for the world and is the oldest place of human life which in turn illustrates the value and true importance of the land and people that have for so long been disregarded and corrupted. Before the use of slavery and colonialism, African had flourishing and prosperous civilizations that been first established in the Nile River valley like the Kingdoms of Kerma in the ancient region of Nubia. There are also many other empires that have been known all over Africa such as the Aksumite, Mali, and Luba empires. These Kingdom s once prospered before or during slavery and colonialism and had their own cultures and significant contributions to civilization. The Kingdom of Kerma was established in the northern part of Sudan in 2500 BC and ended in 1500 BC after the Egyptian invasion of the country after they had already invaded neighboring lands and allianced states or cities. Osteoarthritis Site Analysis Analysis of osteoarthritis for each site was conducted in order to determine whether any of the joint changes in the skeletal remains might indicate changes in physical activity levels before and after colonization. To better ascertain the differences in the colonial eras, the prehistoric burials from Corinth and Apollonia were separated from the colonial periods. Even though every site has individuals of indeterminate sex only a comparison between those individuals for whom sex could be reasonably estimated was done. It is instructive to examine the occurrence of osteoarthritis on both the right and left sides of the body. My initial assessment showed that there are no appreciable differences by side of any given joint; therefore, only the left side is used for analysis (Table 4). They rely relentlessly on these developed nations, hence the tardiness in their developmental process. As unlikely a candidate they are, studies of Drosophila melanogaster have done much in the way of proving theories, discovering genetically identifiable diseases and much more. Over the past three decades, research on this species has lead researchers to question the developmental processes that Drosophila experience (Bürglin 2016). The embryonic development of Drosophila serves as an important case study for developmental genetics, due to the analogous nature of their embryos cell differentiation. Although Drosophila s development has very distinct variations when compared to that of vertebrates, there is a commonality between the embryonic development of the nervous system.
