Fixed Dynamism Two sculptures, among others, lie in the outskirts of the Franklin D. Murphy
Sculpture Garden at UCLA. One of them, The Walking Man, is a bronze sculpture created by
French sculptor Auguste Rodin in 1905. The other, made more than 100 years later, is
T.E.U.C.L.A., a large scale steel sculpturemade by minimalist sculptor Richard Serra. Although it
may seem like these works have more differences than similarities, both emphasize the processes
of their creation and are major movements away from the classical tradition of sculpture.
However, The Walking Man and T.E.U.C.L.A. also differ in several aspects that reflect their
respective artists personal portrayals of modern sculpture. These aspects include: mode of
production, composition and the arrangement of volumes, the play of light and shadow, and visual
experience. Together these elements of formal organization work together to convey meaning in
both of these works. Rodin s deliberate rejection of refinement and disregard for the direct
translation of the unformed to formed in The Walking Man represent the process and spontaneity
of reality, while Serra s use of curvature and aperture in T.E.U.C.L.A. models the spaces people
move through and the perceptive skills they use in life and nature. Although both of these works
are in the round, they are visually and compositionally very different. The Walking Man is a bronze
sculpture of a headless and armless figure

Intro The principle of the separate legal entity was established in the case of Salomon v A
Salomon Co Ltd. it is difficult to pierce the separate legal entity of the company as the House of

Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen Essay
Chantal Fauconier
Jane Austen, a writer in 19th Century England, wrote about what she knew; namely the societal
norms of her era and class. In a time where men were given all the status and privileges, she wrote
novels predominantly about women, their position in society, and the roles that they played. Since
women were not entitled to property, they would often grow up with the goal of finding a suitable
husband
(Guidelines 1990:1). It is for this reason that people have criticised
Jane Austen s writings saying that she reinforced the norms of patriarchy by reassuring the reader
about the order and stability of society. However her novels contain more than this in that her
characters often go against the conventional norms ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, when Mr. Collins arrogantly tells Elizabeth that My situation in life, my connections
with the family of De Bourgh, and my relationship to your own are circumstances highly in my
favour ... it is by no means certain that another offer of marriage may ever be made to you
(Austen1990: 97 98), she politely refused saying I thank you again and again for the honour you
have done me in your proposals, but to accept them is absolutely impossible. My feelings in every
respect forbid it (Austen 1990: 98).
Mr. Collins was shocked by her refusal as he expected her to conform to the societal conventions.
This is one instance of rebellion versus conformity in the novel.
Elizabeth s rebellion (and insistence of going against the conventional reasons for marrying) is
contrasted with Charlotte s conformity. Charlotte accepts Mr. Collin s proposal as she is twenty
seven and needs to secure her financial stability, knowing that another proposal might not come.
Charlotte therefore, unlike
Elizabeth, married for money and not for love (Newton in Clark 1994:
131). Elizabeth thus sought her future husband with regards to how she felt about him and rebels
against the expectations of society.
Therefore, Unlike Charlotte, Elizabeth will not violate

Although Under Armour has done well over the past few years, they face though competition from
top players like Nike and Adidas. These larger companies have more resources and a greater
presence in the international market. There is also a threat of new entrants, and since UA does not
hold patents for its products, new and existing companies may begin to compete for a spot in the
performance apparel market. Other threats include the company s limited bargaining power
(resulting from their diverse supplier base) and the leverage held by wholesale customers.
Fortunately, UA does have the advantage of strong brand recognition, a reputation for innovative
and high quality products, and testimonials of world renowned athletes, minimizing the threat of
substitute products. Although the company was established more than fifteen years ago, Under
Armour, Inc. continues to be in the growth phase of its life cycle. Revenues this quarter increased
almost 23% year over year, and the Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) for the last five years
is about 24%. This is higher than the average quarterly revenue growth (Y/Y) of 8% for the

Dr. Seuss Instruments
The synopsis of the process of the Dr. Seuss theme instrument. The design of our project was
based upon the instruments seen in the Dr. Seuss novels. The instrument is multi colored and
similar to the color scheme found on the cover of the book, Oh, the Places You ll Go. The shape
and unique structure are also attributed to many distinctive instruments found in Dr. Seuss
stories. We decided to have two mouthpieces available, so two people can play the instrument at
the same time and the overall structure characterizes the disproportionate instruments seen in
the books. Going with the theme, the sound created is also very interesting. When assembling
the instrument, we had stuck wax paper between the parts of the pipe, creating a kazoo like
sound. We had chosen to use PVC pipes in order to lock in the sound, leaving no air to escape,
and funnels in order to amplify the sound being given off. Before our final design, there had
happened to be another idea we were going for. The design had included a chamber that would
contain soft air gun pellets or bb gun pellets that were capped off by 3D printed discs, covering
each end of the side chambers. These discs would have holes that would allow air to enter the
chamber, move the pellets around and create a rattle sound... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

My original blueprint, the instrument was shaped as a triangle and two people we suppose to
blow into the bottom angles and the air would travel to the top funnel. The engineering students
said that idea wouldn t work because it would take a lot of air to travel to the top and everyone

Essay Data Mining
Data Mining
Abstract
Data mining is a combination of database and artificial intelligence technologies. Although the AI
field has taken a major dive in the last decade; this new emerging field has shown that AI can add
major contributions to existing fields in computer science. In fact, many experts believe that data
mining is the third hottest field in the industry behind the Internet, and data warehousing.
Data mining is really just the next step in the process of analyzing data. Instead of getting queries
on standard or user specified relationships, data mining goes a step farther by finding meaningful
relationships in data. Relationships that were thought to have not existed, or ones that give a more
insightful view of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Data mining allows companies to focus on the more important information in their data warehouses.
Data mining can be broken down into two major categories. Automated prediction of trends and
behaviors, and automated discovery of previously unknown patterns. In the first category, data
mining automates the process of finding predictive information in large databases. Questions that
traditionally required exhaustive hands on analysis can now be quickly answered directly from
data. In the second category, data mining tools sweep through databases and identify previously
hidden patterns in one step. This category is where the major focus of research has been on.
Discussion
Data mining is a rather new term for a challenge that has been growing for many years: how to
scan very large databases to retrieve the high level conceptual information of the greatest interest
(Lindsay). With the advances in data acquisition and storage technologies, the problem of how to
turn measured raw data into useful information becomes a important one. Having reached sizes that
defy even partial examination by humans, the data volumes are literally swamping users. For
example, large US retail chains now mine their data bases with sophisticated data mining programs
to look for general trends and geographic clustering in purchases that are not easily visible in the
huge multitude of products and sales.

Symbolism In Thoreau s Walden
As a background, Thoreau had lived alone in the woods by Walden Pond for two years and two
months, in Concord, Massachusetts. A lot of people had asked him how his daily life was when
he was there, and this book, Walden, is an attempt to answer that question. In his writing, he uses
the first person view which he states that he knows his self best and aims to give a what he call a
simple and sincere account of his own life. When Thoreau removed himself from society and chose
solitude at WaldenPond and wrote this book is a proof of which he can communicate his ideas well
to the readers.
In his book, Thoreau sets out his own beliefs about nature of human existence and society where
he stated that he believes that men does not need to work hard as they do if and only if they are
willing to simplify and also by following their instincts. He introduced the concept of voluntary
poverty for himself where primary necessities were identified. ... Show more content on

QUESTION 3 The assertion that all works by weird fiction authors are simply ridiculous flights
of fancy wholly detached from real world issues and problems is completely false. I could
choose almost any example from our readings and pick out some sort of real world issue or
important thing that I have learned from them. For the sake of time, however, I will focus on The
Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, The Summer People by Shirley Jackson and
Smoke Ghost by Fritz Leiber. Each of these stories has succeeded in broadening my horizons and
has taught me something important about the world in which we live. Weird fictionstories cover a
wide range of important issues including sexism, the social structure of tourist towns and the
disparity of the working class. In the introduction to the book Weird Fictionby S. T. Joshi, different
aspects of the weird tale are examined. Joshi states that the weird tale...did not (and perhaps does
not now) exist as a genre but as the consequence of a world view (1). This quote refers to the fact
that weird literature stems from a desire to display a certain view of the world to readers, not just
take them on a flight of detached fancy. Another point that Joshi makes about weird literature, is
seen through a quote on the last page of his introduction, In every case we shall see that each

The Movie The Legend
This movie is about Chris Kyle, who is a dedicated Navy SEAL sniper. He is referred to as The
Legend because he is one of the greatest, deadliest snipers and has killed dozens of people.
American Sniper really shows the effect war has on a person and how Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder changed his life. Throughout his four tours in war, Chris was exposed to actual and
threatened death. Which is one of the requirements to have PTSD. A lot of those situations
where he experienced the actual or threatened death were people he cared about deeply, which
definitely impacted him. Not only that, but he had killed dozens of people as well so he
witnessed it all in person and had a direct experience. The four categories of symptoms for PTSD
are intrusion, avoidance, negative cognitions/mood, and arousal/reactivity. He clearly displayed
symptoms in each of these four categories especially when he would return home to his family.
There was a scene where Chris was sitting in a chair staring at a TV that was not on but there were
sounds of constant gun shots and a helicopter. He was having an auditory hallucination, which falls
under the category of intrusion. Another symptom Chris presented was avoidance. When his wife,
Taya, asked him what he wanted to do that day, he did not want to leave the house. This was
probably because he was avoiding any situation which could remind him of the traumatic events he
had experienced. Although, that was not the only thing he avoided. Each time

The Bush Administration s Relation With Iraq Prior to Iraq s Invasion of Kuwait
Prior to the August 2, 1990 invasion of Kuwait on the part of Iraq, the
United States had questionable relations with Iraq dictator, Saddam Hussein, to say the least. In
retrospect, which is inherently advantageous as a 20/20 perspective, questions remain unanswered
as to whether or not the United States was too appeasing to Saddam Hussein in the years, months,
and days leading up to that early August morning. There remains to this day lingering questions as
to the role that the US Ambassador to Iraq, April Glaspie, played in conveying the

Summoned before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to clarify her role in the Administration
s relations with Iraq prior to August 2, 1990,
Ambassador Glaspie offered her version of the events that led to the invasion.
She recalled that Iraq had first and foremost just finished a long, drawn out war with its neighbor
and nemesis, Iran. Hussein, she recalled, had made repeated threats against the state of Israel in the
first half of 1990, but abruptly switched his focus from Israel to that of Kuwait and another
neighbor to the south, the United Arab Emirates. He announced in that speech, in the crudest and
most unmistakable way, that if Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates did not revise their oil policy
and produce according to their OPEC quotas, Iraq would take upon itself effective measures to
make sure they did. 1 Later, under examination by members of the Senate Committee, Glaspie
further detailed
Iraq s basic conflict with Kuwait and the UAE as ...it was Kuwait and the

In this way, these offices need to keep attendance levels high by offering shows that give

Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven Essay
An Analysis of Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven
Death. A strong topic, frequently but solemnly discussed. However, when I read Edgar Allan Poe
s The Raven , I was immediately captivated by the new angle brought to my attention regarding
death. While the topic of death is usually associated with either sympathy or horror, Poe succeeded
in portraying a feeling caught between the two; and at the same time bringing forth new feelings I
would never thought to consider regarding death. These feelings reflect a sorrow so deep into a
psychological madness, a feeling that the pain death brings has ruined one forever. After analyzing
this poem I came to the conclusion that Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven demonstrates that the sorrow
the death of a loved one brings will stay with you forever. Poe communicated this theme through
abstract language , tone, and allusion.
The opening lines of The Raven identify the speaker as someone who feels tired and weak but is
still awake in the middle of a gloomy night. He passes the time by reading a strange book of
ancient knowledge. The first line of the poem contains alliteration of w in while, weak, and weary
to produce the effect of unsteadiness. This line also sets the poem s rhythmical pattern and
provides the first example of the use of internal rhyme in dreary and weary. The speaker tells of
becoming more tired and beginning to doze but being wakened by a sound that he assumes is a
quiet knock. Internal rhymes of napping, tapping,

Latin American Culture Essay
Jared Wong Professor Figueredo SPAN 2200 Commercial Culture: How the Hip Hop Industry
Influenced Latin American Hip Hop As the music industry has become commercialized on an
international level, people have argued that music culture has become somewhat homogeneous
worldwide. America is often seen as the center of this commercial expansion; this can be seen in the
case of music, as American artists have recently been achieving mainstream success with
international audiences. Artists from the US are now able to tour internationally, and are well
received across the world. This paper analyzes the effects of this commercialization in Latin
America, specifically in the context of hip hop. Latin America has traditionally had its own unique
musical style, but as a region it has not been immune to the influence and spread of commercialized
hip hop. The extent to which this movement has influenced Latin America is not always... Show

Despite the fact that their commercial release records still seem to retain their values, the fact that
Orishas left Cuba to achieve success seems to directly conflict with some of their musical themes
(Songs like A Lo Cubano and Hay Un Son are primarily about representing Cuban culture and
identity) (Ramsdell). Hay Un Son was released in 2007 on their album Antidiotico, but A Lo
Cubano was the title track from the album A Lo Cubano released in 1999 this was their first album
released under a label. The time difference between the two songs, however, seems to show that
Orishas s sense of cultural pride was not lost throughout their commercial career, and remained
strong throughout. As mentioned in the earlier comparison between Amenaza s No Te Atrevas and
Orishas s Atencion , their strongly rebellious tone might have been tempered, but this is likely a
result of Orishas trying to maintain the necessary balance between entertainment and

The Big Two Beloved River By Ernest Hemingway
Naturalism is an extension to realism that is often much harsher and more unforgiving. There are
many criterion that determine whether a text falls under the category of naturalism. Ernest
Hemingway s mastery of the naturalistic style is evident in his many works as he expertly applies
the many different elements. It is clear that his work falls under the naturalist genre through looking
specifically at his short story The Big Two Hearted River . Though Naturalismis a big part of
Hemingway s writing, one would be remiss to simply stop their analysis on the naturalistic elements
of the story. The Big Two Hearted River goes against the traditional naturalist element of
determinism through the use of the main character s search for recovery... Show more content on

Objectivism is a technique used where the author excludes most, if not all, of the character s
past and identity so that the character becomes a simple observer. In The Big Two Hearted
River , the reader knows very little about the character Nick in order to focus more on the plot
and what happens to the character, rather than the character themselves (Zhang 2.2). The
objectivism of Nick in the story goes a step further. Hemingway s focus on the characters actions
demonstrates how Nick s technique allows him to move beyond the deterministic world to create
his own purpose. Hemingway only includes information about Nick to help the reader understand
what he is trying to achieve. Nick took him by the head and held him while he threaded the slim
hook under his chin, down through his thorax and into the last segments of his abdomen. The
grasshopper took hold of the hook with his front feet, spitting tobacco juice on it. Nick dropped
him into the water (Hemingway 191). Much of the story is a series of descriptions of Nicks actions
much like the example given above. There is not much focus on the characters thoughts or feelings.
Nick s actions are the most important part of the story because they align themselves with his
purpose; to systematically and ceremonially kill, out of necessity rather than for no reason. Nick
reconnects with nature throughout the text, but instead of nature having control over the
consequences of his actions, he is the one who controls the outcome. This goes against the
traditional naturalistic style where characters hopelessly battle against nature and no matter what
they do cannot achieve their goal because nature is stronger and determines the outcome of their
actions. Nick s appearance, age or health have very little to do with the Hemingway s idea of how
to become more masculine , for him men must first use proper technique in order to create meaning

Restricting Communism with the Marshall Plan
The source in question is an extract from the United States Secretary of State George C. Marshall
s commencement speech for receiving an honorary degree from Harvard University; it was
delivered on the 5th of June, 1947 at Harvard University.
The speech was created primarily Charles Bohlen, a Soviet expert and Marshall s special assistant,
and later revised by Marshall. Department officials, including George Kennan and William Clayton
saw the Marshall Plan as a way of restricting Communist growth in Europe, by strengthening the
struggling democratic European nations . After the end of WWII in 1945, the majority of Europe
was in ruins; over a third of the European industry was destroyed by the war, resulting in weak
economies, and millions of people unemployed and starving, causing low morale. As economies
were not improving at a rapid enough pace, combined with high unemployment and a hungry
population, people started to look for change. Communism began to look promising, and was
becoming increasingly popular in Europe through rebels and partisans. In an attempt confine the
spread of Communism, Marshall was sent to Moscow to negotiate with Stalin. Initially, Stalin
welcomed the possibility of Soviet participation in a U.S funded European reconstruction program.
However, Stalin opposed the idea of a coordinated multilateral aid programme, which was seen to
threaten the Soviet political and economic position in Eastern Europe , and withdrew all support and
insisted that

shared the same interests as her father, but looked very much like her mother according to Moffat.
In the film from Art 160 class of Frida, Kahlo married Diego Rivera in which marriage she was not

Abstract expressionism is the pioneer of western abstract painting style. It was to use exaggerating
brushwork to express emotions, so it is similar to Xieyi. However, the level of thinking may be quite
different. Most of the artists would like to express their personal feelings like happiness, sadness
rather than national feelings by using objects.(Seitz,1983) By contrast, Color field painting was the
development of Abstract expressionism and the purpose was similar in addition to the fact that
background was tremendously crucial. (Wilkin,2007) The only difference is that the subject matter
in color field painting is the color, the object is not necssarily important.(Artstory foundation)
Willem De Kooning represented the Abstract expressionism while Kenneth Noland represented the
color field painting.Willem De Kooning was the prominent Abstract expressionism painters and
urgely objected to the restrictions imposed by naming movements. He said I m not interested in
abstracting or taking things out or reducing painting to design, form, line, and color. I paint this
way because I can keep putting more things in it drama, anger, pain, love, a figure, a horse, my
ideas about space. Through your eyes it again becomes an emotion or idea. (Artstory foundation). It

were the women features. In the other way, Kenneth Noland was an significant painter who insisted
on producing his paintings in soak stain technique. He focused on the choice of color, to determine

The Perils Of Indifference By Elie Wiesel
April 12, 1999 marked the Seventh Millennium Evening at the White House and the 54th year
after Franklin Roosevelt s death. Years after personally experiencing the horrors of the
Holocaust and World War II, Elie Wiesel shared his story with America among the President and
First lady, Hillary Clinton, to inspire the world to act upon social and political injustices. In his
speech The Perils of Indifference , Wiesel opened up about his past and how it made him realize
how important it is to stand up against crimes against humanity. He also discussed the state of
the American people and compared their involvement in foreign intervention back to the lack of
intervention in World War II. Wiesel motivated America with his emphasis on the emotional,
logical, and ethical impacts of indifference. Perhaps the most influential piece of Wiesel s speech
was his inclusion of unique personal narrative. His touching story of his youth spent in a
concentration camp gave weight to his points on indifference as he recalled that Fifty four years
ago to the day, a young Jewish boy from a small town in the Carpathian Mountains woke up...in a
place of eternal infamy called Buchenwald (Wiesel). With no property to their name and no
individual rights, they marched to Buchenwald where his father later died before they could both
escape ( Wiesel, Elie ). The reality of these past horrors gave him a strong sense of credibility as he
spoke on about the time when he was oppressed and victimized.

The Expectancy Theory Of Motivation In Remember The Titans
Immanuel Wilder
19 July 2017
Dr. Creasy
BA 133
Remember the Titans The Expectancy Theory illustrates the mental process that employees endure
when making decisions while doing voluntary things. The theory describes that the effort will
determine the performance and the performance will help indicate the overall outcome.
Expectancy represents the belief that exerting a high level of effort will result in the successful
performance of some task, (Dr. Creasy PowerPoint). There are some advantages of the expectancy
theory. One advantage is that it emphasizes on rewards or pay offs, (Expectancy Theory of
Motivation, n.d., para. 5). In Remember the Titans, Coach Herman Boone, portrayed by Denzel
Washington, expects big things out of his high school football team. As the newly appointed
head coach and a black man, Coach Boone was faced with big expectations or else he would have
to face the consequences. Coach Boone established that his team would show tremendous effort in
the fall football camp at Gettysburg College. He set ground rules as he told all of his players that
they would leave the school by 7:29 AM and made them all wear dress shirts, ties, and a jacket.
Coaches appreciate the athletes that display the expectancy theory because they want more out of
their team. At Gettysburg College, All American linebacker Gerry Bertier, confronted fellow
starting linebacker, Julius Campbell and wanted him to put in more effort during practice and play
the right assignment. As

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Air Transport
Using the right type of transport is very important in the supply chain. As we have learnt earlier the
use of the transport mode is of strategic importance to stock holding decisions. Air transport is
much quicker but the costs are high as opposed to shipping by boat or rail. Sea or rail transport
requires having higher levels of inventory in house to meet quick customer demands. Most
importantly, customer service levels must be met, and this often determines the mode of transport
used.
The options for consideration include: rail, road, water (sea and river) or air transport.
Rail
Railway offers the logistics manager cost effective, energy efficient mode of transport for large
quantities of goods over long distances. Though often associated with the movement of low value
/ high volume cargo like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Air
Air transport is often viewed as a premium, emergency type service that is used when all else
fails. The most expensive of all the modes of transport, airfreight offers the logistics manager fast,
on time service, but at a relatively high price. However, for firms supporting global markets, air
may in fact be the most cost effective mode of transport when inventory and customer service issues
are considered.
Air transportation is best suited to moving relatively small high value / low volume items long
distances, although things as diverse as livestock and automobiles routinely move by air as well.
The best example of air transport is jewellery, watches, diamonds, gold and gemstones. Like
trucking, air transport industry is made up of many small companies dominated by a few large
airlines. Transportation of goods by air is regulated by appropriate rules. Commodities are shipped
in appropriate air containers. There is also a set of special equipment

Ethical Issues In Huck Finn
Throughout its history, Huck Finn has faced many controversies. It was shunned by many news
outlets at the time of its writing for its subject matter, being called trash by many publications. It
was even banned from some libraries for this reason. However, despite its flaws, Huck Finn
proves to be an entertaining novel that offers an interesting look into pre Civil war America, and
should be freely avaliable for all to read. Despite its inherent value as an examination of its time,
many people had a problem with the manner in which it was portrayed. One of these apparent
issues was noted by a censor of the Concord public library, who called into question the use of the
dialect and grammatical style of the book. To quote the New York Herald, who were reporting
on the situation, Another committeeman perused the volume with great care and discovered that
it was couched in the language of a rough, ignorant dialect and that all through its pages there is
a systematic use of bad grammar and an employment of inelegant expressions. These
mannerisms, combined with other offenses, led to the book garnering a trashy reputation in the
eyes of the censors, who quickly banned it from their library. however, to view these
mannerisms as trashy and nothing more would be to misunderstand a large portion of the novel s
appeal. This novel is a period piece, set in the south before the onset of the Civil War. In order to
fully immerse the reader into this setting, Twain made sure to include all of the different dialects
that a person in that setting might hear. As the Athenaeum deftly explains, (The characters are)
schooled in half a dozen extraordinary dialects the Pike County dialect in all its forms, the dialect
of the Missouri negro, and the extremest form of the backwoods South Western dialect, to wit. This
makes the story and characters more entertaining, as it allows the reader to truly immerse
themselves into the narrative. However, some would argue that this immersion isn t entertaining in
it s own right. These people would say that, despite its the lengths it take to immerse you in its
story, it s generally coarse nature would drive off anyone who would try to endure it for more than
five minutes. It is

Slavery Changes In Roman Life
Roman slavery was a very big part of the Roman lives. Slavery was an important feature of the
roman world. Prisoners of war and those who sold themselves to pay off debts usually became
slaves. Slaves in Ancient Rome had few rights and couldn t chose what they wore or where they
lived. Slaves were usually the people with less money. Many more wealthy people owned slaves.
Not all slaves were treated badly at this time, but many were.
Many people sold themselves into slavery to pay off depths. If people needed money to pay things
off, they would often sell themselves into slavery or get brought in. Some became slaves because
they could not pay back the money they had borrowed. The government would take people into
slavery if they could not pay their taxes. There were also many cases of poor people selling their
children as slaves to richer neighbors.

small allowance put into a fund from the owners. When there was enough money in the fund the

changes have been made and laws against slavery. The romans lives depended on slavery, now we
do not have many slaves.
Slaves were often mixed with free labor as employers used whatever human resources were
available and needed to get a job done. A large percentage of the people living in Rome and Italy
were slaves. Prisoners were taken to the slave markets where they were paraded naked, with
placards around their necks explaining their best and worst qualities. If information on the placards
was later found to be untrue, the buyer could take the seller to court. Slave prices would depend to

Linear Macromolecules
Deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA, like proteins, is a linear macromolecule found in all living
cells. In contrast to proteins, however, it is build up of only 4 different types of building blocks,
called nucleotides. Nucleotides are composed of a base, being either a purine or pyrimidine group,
and a 2 deoxyribosyl tri phosphate. The four types of bases composing the sequence of DNAare
purines and pyramidines. The sugar is a 2 deoxy ribose which is phosphorylated at its 5 hydroxyl
group. Free nucleotides contain either one, two or three phosphates representing the mono , di , or
triphosphate form of the nucleotide, the latter being known as dATP, dGTP, dTTP, and dCTP.

Reasons For The Hostages Were Journalists And Aid Workers
ISIL continued to demand ransom payments and other concessions from foreign governments in
exchange for the return of hostages, and it executed the hostages if the governments refused.
Most of the hostages were journalists and aid workers, but in late December 2014 the group
captured a Jordanian pilot after his fighter jet crashed during a mission against ISIL in Syria.
News of the pilot s capture met with consternation in Jordan, where a large proportion of the
public had opposed the country s participation in the anti ISIL coalition. Support for military
action surged in February 2015, however, after an ISIL video showed the pilot being burned to
death by his captors. Once ISIL took control of territory in Iraq and Syria, it engaged in a... Show

To help mitigate the manpower losses, IS has turned to conscription in some areas. Iraqi expert
Hisham al Hashimi believes only 30% of the group s fighters are ideologues , with the remainder
joining out of fear or coercion. A significant number of IS fighters are neither Iraqi nor Syrian. In
October 2015, National Counterterrorism Center Director Nicholas Rasmussen told Congress
that the group had attracted more than 28,000 foreign fighters. They included at least 5,000
Westerners, approximately 250 of them Americans, he said. Studies by the London based
International Centre for the Study of Radicalization and Political Violence (ICSR) and the New
York based Soufan Group suggest that while about a quarter of the foreign fighters are from the
West, the majority are from nearby Arab countries, such as Tunisia, Saudi Arabia and Jordan
and Morocco ( What Is Islamic State ? ). By late 2014, cells of militants claiming to be affiliates
or direct extensions of ISIL had emerged in a number of conflict zones in Africa, the Middle
East, and Central Asia. Existing insurgent groups such as Boko Haram in Nigeria and some
elements of the Taliban in Afghanistan also pledged their allegiance to ISIL. Outside of Iraq and
Syria, ISIL affiliated groups appeared to be most strongly established in North Africa. In Libya

The Health of College Students
Rob Geis, a current college student, explains, A student is not at fault for unwanted weight gain.
It is the college meal plans that cause the gain in weight. Many colleges require incoming
freshmen to be on a meal plan (Geis). Parents like the meal plans because they know their child
is getting meals every day, but the plan does have its downsides. Geis believes that many
students do not eat three meals every day. If we don t eat every meal we are given, we are
wasting our money which was used to buy the meal plan. So, it is either gain weight or waste
money (Geis). This may cause the family of the studentto get upset. The parents may reduce the

A family sending a student to college may expect good grades from the student. If a student s grade
is going down, a family might check up on the student. When the family checks on the student, the
family may find something wrong with the child. The family will try and help, but the student may
refuse, thinking that he or she is fine. This could cause embarrassment in the student and make his
or her situation worse. There are many ways to stay healthy on campus. To begin with, the
American College Health and Association states that The top five threats to academic
performance are stress; a cold, flu or sore throat; sleep difficulties; concerns for friends or
family; and depression (qtd. in Dineley). When a student s grade drops from any of the five
threats, his or her future can be affected. A student s career can depend on his or her grades and
health. Dineley tells the first way to stay healthy is to get plenty of rest. Many students get too
little of sleep, which causes illness ( College ) . A student with an illness could miss class.
Besides missing class, a student will have less time to study and learn. The second way to stay
healthy according to Dineley is to exercise more often. However, many students do not have
enough time to exercise; especially dealing with the stress of college ( College ). A student s top
priority might be his or her grades. If a student slacks on exercising, his or her physical health may
deplete rapidly. Ultimately, a

India did intensify its firings on the villages of Kashmir by justifying how it was trying to prevent
Pakistan trained militants from taking over Kashmir and entering its territory. Pakistan claims
Kashmir to be part of its territory but the fact that the Kashmiri militants are seen as extremists and
rebels are putting the Kashmiri cause behind the scene since the international community has been
projected with the image that the Kashmiri Movement is dangerous and needs to be smothered,
thus the peaceful image of the innocent Kashmiri people being slaughtered in cold blood with
their struggle for freedom has been projected in a more violent, vile way and has little sympathy
from the International front. Jonah Blank puts it into simple words as to what the two nations view
regarding Kashmir: Politicians in both capitals see only the Kashmir they desire to see: for
Pakistanis, a Muslim land pining to join its Islamic neighbor and welcoming the intervention of
mujahideen; for Indians, a state ravaged by terrorism and sedition but now largely brought under
control. Both visions are clouded by self delusion.

Themes Of Memento Mori
literature around this time revolve mostly around lyric poems and plays to let people express their
feelings. One of the themes that you often occur in lyrical poems and plays is memento mori.
Memento mori means remember the dead (pg.162). This saying was created because of the
massive amount of death that happens around this time, such as the black death and constant
battles. Not only does the saying apply to death in battle, but it also applies to those who have not
excepted Christ and follow his rules shall receive hell. The
Europeans who live in the medieval era were very religious and believe in Jesus Christ and
Virgin Mary. For examples, stories like the Everyman and Ubi Sunt Qui ante Nos Fuerunt are often
read in musical rhythm and their topics often explore romantic feelings
(vocabulary.com). In the Medieval era, the major theme in stories that are used constantly is
memento mori, to helps teach and express a lesson in plays, lyrical poems, and about the belief of
the Europeans in the 15th century.
In addition, the use of memento mori is mostly used in plays, normally to leave a great impact at
the end to give the audience something to remember and learn some sort of lesson.
For example, a popular play that was performed at the time was Everyman. Everyman s plot was
to let everyone know that time waits for no man and if your heart is not purified and clean enough
for God, then he or she will spend entirety in hell when death reaches them. We see

The British North America Act Of 1867
The British North America Act of 1867 and the subsequent Indian Act of 1876 gave the Canadian
government, under prime minster John A. Macdonald, full control over the nation s Aboriginal
people. The government used this power to establish boarding schools for Aboriginal children. An
estimated 144 residential schools operated at different times between the late 1800s and 1996
throughout Canada. These schools were established with the purpose to enhance assimilation of
Aboriginal children into the Canadian culture of British and French heritage. However, despite
these misguided government attempts lasting more than a century, the Aboriginal culture and
civilization could not be eradicated, and the residential school system as originally conceived
proved to be a failure.
Residential schools were religious custodial schools established after 1880 by the Canadian
government in partnership with churches. Through next half century, a system of residential
schools stretching across country developed. The Roman Catholic church ran 3/5 of residential
schools, the Anglican church Вј, and the United and Presbyterian churches controlled the rest.
Under the BNA Act and Indian Acts, the government was responsible for providing Aboriginals
with an education as well as integrating them into Canadian society. Aboriginal leaders also wanted
Euro Canadian schooling for their children so they could acquire the skills of the society in order
to help them transition into a world led by

Compare And Contrast First And Second Great Awakening
The First Great Awakening spread throughout the 13 colonies as an emotional religious revival
movement from 1720s to 1740s that appeared due to the increase of secularism and rationalism
religion in which evangelist had challenged established denominations and pushed towards a more
personal relationship with God (3 + 12).The Second Great Awakeningwas a religious revival
movement from in the 19th century, which called for an individualized relationship between the
people and God, promoting it through Baptist and Methodist beliefs, which held a more egalitarian
attitude in the case of everyone being able to achieve salvation. The First Great Awakeningand
Second Great Awakening both transformed religious ideology by introducing individualism, a
belief where men have a closer and direct relationship with God. The First and Second Great
Awakenings had a transformation in their methods of worship with a change in venue, with the
First Great Awakening having people preach to the masses on the street corners outside; while in
the Second Great Awakening, having revivals and camp meetings with people screaming and
jumping, a change from the traditional, to a wholly new method of worship.
Jonathan Edwards, a Congregationalist minister in western Massachusetts, who was shocked at the
dissipating religious spirit, believing that people were giving up to sinful pleasures. He worked
against the secularization of the Enlightenment and focus on pushing the emotional side of religion
by expressing the wonderful nature of Heaven and the horror of Hell, helping to renew intensity
behind religion. This idea of Heaven and Hell was stated in his sermon, Sinners in the Hands of an
Angry God , intended to scare people into looking for salvation, with descriptions of people
being held over a fire in Hell. This is expressive of the change of social norms in Puritan New
England, where going to the Minister s house as opposed to the Tavern was acceptable. This also
shows the more individualized ideals people had, for they were presented with the option of
achieving their own salvation and take responsibility for their lives, having the option of
maintaining a personal connection with God. (ch 3 txtbk)

The Revolutions of 1848 Essay
The Revolutions of 1848
The Revolutions of 1848 have been described as the greatest revolution of the century 1. From its
mild beginnings in Palermo, Sicily in January 1848, it did not take long to spread across the rest
of Europe (Britain and Russia were the only countries not to experience such revolutions). In 1848
more states on the European continent were overcome by revolution than ever before and ever
since 2. The Revolutions became more radical but after June 1848 these revolutionary events began
to overlap with those of counterrevolutionary actions, thus enabling the old regimes to return to
power. 1848 was described as a sunny spring of the peoples abruptly interrupted by the winter of
the princes 3.

The situation was the same across central and west Europe. Revolutionaries found that the high
hopes they had held in 1848 were pushed aside by the reality of different aims. As a result the
counter revolution continued to develop and gain the upper hand, particularly in the Habsburg
monarchy, where rivalries within the monarchy itself and the confusion of competing national
claims made counter revolution easier, and in the Italian states where a lack of support had proved
too powerful.
This division amongst revolutionaries was further heightened by the continued existence of social
and economic problems throughout Europe. It was these social problems which had helped bring
about the 1848 Revolutions in the first place. In the 1840s there was increased food shortage and
business failure along with high unemployment, which had increased the dissatisfaction with the
existing conservative or moderate regimes. Although this economic discontent had not been
enough on its own to bring about the 1848 Revolutions, it definitely played a key part in their
development and their collapse. These problems were still apparent in 1848 and consequently took
some of the focus away from the revolutionaries cause. Along with the growing strain on food
supplies and the increase of unemployment, Europe was also suffering from cholera and the plague.
The plague had spread across Europe, starting

Repercussions In Education
The United States is no longer the leader in education standards and in fact is no longer even
making the top ten when it comes to reading, math, and science literacy rankings among the world
for education (Learning Curve, 8). The repercussions are that college graduates are not as
competitive globally as they once were and obtaining desired careers are more competitive than
ever, having an ultimate result of slowing down the economy. Due to these conditions, education
reform needs to be dealt with immediately as it will take years of implementation before any
positive results are actually achieved. Despite the introduction of common core, and no child left

Parents that have spoken out risk upsetting a teacher that will be looking after their child for the
rest of the year, many teachers express the opinion that parents are not qualified to help their
children as they have not had pedagogy training. Parents need to be allowed to voice opinions and
concerns when it comes to their children s well being without fear of repercussions. There are
numerous ways that parents should become involved in education reform. In New York City,
parents withheld their children from participating in standardized testing; proclaiming that too
much time was spent on training for the tests and not enough time and faith was given to the
teachers to teach according to their best judgement and training. Instead of waiting on politicians to
lead the change in education reform parents need to start change themselves on a local level by
participating heavily in the schools that their children attend. Getting to know the teachers and
administration allows parents to have a voice about concerns and problems that they witness
firsthand as well as being active voters for members of the school board. Those that complain that
the nation is no longer a competitive learning source should in turn become actively involved in
education

Complementary And Alternative Therapies

CAMS are divided into five different categories: biological, manipulative body, mind body, energy,
and alternative medicine. For example, dance therapy would fall under the manipulative body based
interventions, while mind body interventions encompass alternatives like poetry, art, or music, and
yoga would be an example of mind body interventions and manipulative body. Participants in music
therapy have reported improved quality of life, and yoga therapy has been shown to lead
individuals towards motivation to health improvement. As well, dance therapy has been proven to
improve body image, coordination, body awareness, depression, anxiety, and stress relief; as well,
sexual abuse survivors have used dance therapy to reconnect with their body by coping and

Dead Zone in the Gulf of Mexico Essay
One World Essay: Dead Zone in the Gulf of Mexico
Scientific Reasoning:
The dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico is a human problem, like most other disasters. What this
means is that once the place thrived and was ecologically balanced, but we tipped the balance
slightly and wrecked havoc upon the environment. It has been noted to occur since the 1950 s and
is ongoing. The reason that this dead zone occurs is because of a phenomenon known as
eutrophication. Eutrophication is when there is an excessive amount of nutrients in a body of water
and it causes an abundance of plants to grow. In this case the nearby farms had been using nitrogen
in their fertilizers. The nitrogen got carried into the ocean through rain and other forms of ... Show

Some species might thrive in conditions that other struggle to survive. For example some predators
might need more oxygen then a smaller prey. With less predators being around, there is a huge
burst in prey, which can eat up all of the bacteria. When the bacteria all die, the prey can t find
any food and all die out. This causes a very unreliable food chain and can be dangerous to live in.
In hypoxic zones what tends to happen is that marine life such as fish or shrimp die out quickly
while the smaller organisms live. This causes whole species to die out leaving a dominance of
gelatinous creatures such as jellyfish to thrive in. Economic Problems:
There are many economical problems due to the dead zone ranging from fisheries going out of
business to illnesses. The economical problems have paid their toll on nearby fishers whom in
total have paid over 10 billion US dollars to repair the problem. Sadly though, no matter how
much they pay, the problem is still on going. The gulf s massive fishing industry is trying to
focus its efforts on the parts that have been affected in an attempt to save their sea. According to
many sources, EPA views this problem as unimportant and hasn t helped yet. The reason that it is
so hard to come to an agreement is because there is no solution that pleases everyone. Right now
the farmers up north of the gulf are having an easy time because of easy and cheap waste disposal
while downstream the fishers are

Constantly Brooding Economist Summary
Steven E. Rhoads wrote an article concerning why the brooding economist is constantly quarreling
with congressmen, social workers, engineers, in general all those who seek more money to do
good. Economists were alarmed about recreation center costs, because they cared about the victims
of heart attacks and slow learning children. Steven says that whenever the costs and benefits of one
program increase, the expenditures on and benefits from some other program decrease. Steven
believes that Economists keep reminding and lecturing us that there is no such thing as a free

who don t, the concept is a normal aspect of life,Therefore, it is common sense

  • 2. Comparing The Walking Man And T. E. U. L. A. Dinan Guan Art History 23 Modern Art Dis 1J Fixed Dynamism Two sculptures, among others, lie in the outskirts of the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden at UCLA. One of them, The Walking Man, is a bronze sculpture created by French sculptor Auguste Rodin in 1905. The other, made more than 100 years later, is T.E.U.C.L.A., a large scale steel sculpturemade by minimalist sculptor Richard Serra. Although it may seem like these works have more differences than similarities, both emphasize the processes of their creation and are major movements away from the classical tradition of sculpture. However, The Walking Man and T.E.U.C.L.A. also differ in several aspects that reflect their respective artists personal portrayals of modern sculpture. These aspects include: mode of production, composition and the arrangement of volumes, the play of light and shadow, and visual experience. Together these elements of formal organization work together to convey meaning in both of these works. Rodin s deliberate rejection of refinement and disregard for the direct translation of the unformed to formed in The Walking Man represent the process and spontaneity of reality, while Serra s use of curvature and aperture in T.E.U.C.L.A. models the spaces people move through and the perceptive skills they use in life and nature. Although both of these works are in the round, they are visually and compositionally very different. The Walking Man is a bronze sculpture of a headless and armless figure ... • 5. Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen Essay Chantal Fauconier Jane Austen, a writer in 19th Century England, wrote about what she knew; namely the societal norms of her era and class. In a time where men were given all the status and privileges, she wrote novels predominantly about women, their position in society, and the roles that they played. Since women were not entitled to property, they would often grow up with the goal of finding a suitable husband (Guidelines 1990:1). It is for this reason that people have criticised Jane Austen s writings saying that she reinforced the norms of patriarchy by reassuring the reader about the order and stability of society. However her novels contain more than this in that her characters often go against the conventional norms ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, when Mr. Collins arrogantly tells Elizabeth that My situation in life, my connections with the family of De Bourgh, and my relationship to your own are circumstances highly in my favour ... it is by no means certain that another offer of marriage may ever be made to you (Austen1990: 97 98), she politely refused saying I thank you again and again for the honour you have done me in your proposals, but to accept them is absolutely impossible. My feelings in every respect forbid it (Austen 1990: 98). Mr. Collins was shocked by her refusal as he expected her to conform to the societal conventions. This is one instance of rebellion versus conformity in the novel. Elizabeth s rebellion (and insistence of going against the conventional reasons for marrying) is contrasted with Charlotte s conformity. Charlotte accepts Mr. Collin s proposal as she is twenty seven and needs to secure her financial stability, knowing that another proposal might not come. Charlotte therefore, unlike Elizabeth, married for money and not for love (Newton in Clark 1994: 131). Elizabeth thus sought her future husband with regards to how she felt about him and rebels against the expectations of society. Therefore, Unlike Charlotte, Elizabeth will not violate ... The instrument is multi colored and similar to the color scheme found on the cover of the book, Oh, the Places You ll Go. The shape and unique structure are also attributed to many distinctive instruments found in Dr. Seuss stories. We decided to have two mouthpieces available, so two people can play the instrument at the same time and the overall structure characterizes the disproportionate instruments seen in the books. Going with the theme, the sound created is also very interesting. When assembling the instrument, we had stuck wax paper between the parts of the pipe, creating a kazoo like sound. We had chosen to use PVC pipes in order to lock in the sound, leaving no air to escape, and funnels in order to amplify the sound being given off. Before our final design, there had happened to be another idea we were going for. The design had included a chamber that would contain soft air gun pellets or bb gun pellets that were capped off by 3D printed discs, covering each end of the side chambers. These discs would have holes that would allow air to enter the chamber, move the pellets around and create a rattle sound... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although the AI field has taken a major dive in the last decade; this new emerging field has shown that AI can add major contributions to existing fields in computer science. In fact, many experts believe that data mining is the third hottest field in the industry behind the Internet, and data warehousing. Data mining allows companies to focus on the more important information in their data warehouses. Data mining can be broken down into two major categories. Automated prediction of trends and behaviors, and automated discovery of previously unknown patterns. In the first category, data mining automates the process of finding predictive information in large databases. Questions that traditionally required exhaustive hands on analysis can now be quickly answered directly from data. In the second category, data mining tools sweep through databases and identify previously hidden patterns in one step. This category is where the major focus of research has been on. Discussion Data mining is a rather new term for a challenge that has been growing for many years: how to scan very large databases to retrieve the high level conceptual information of the greatest interest (Lindsay). With the advances in data acquisition and storage technologies, the problem of how to turn measured raw data into useful information becomes a important one. Having reached sizes that defy even partial examination by humans, the data volumes are literally swamping users. For example, large US retail chains now mine their data bases with sophisticated data mining programs to look for general trends and geographic clustering in purchases that are not easily visible in the huge multitude of products and sales. • 11. Symbolism In Thoreau s Walden As a background, Thoreau had lived alone in the woods by Walden Pond for two years and two months, in Concord, Massachusetts. A lot of people had asked him how his daily life was when he was there, and this book, Walden, is an attempt to answer that question. In his writing, he uses the first person view which he states that he knows his self best and aims to give a what he call a simple and sincere account of his own life. When Thoreau removed himself from society and chose solitude at WaldenPond and wrote this book is a proof of which he can communicate his ideas well to the readers. In his book, Thoreau sets out his own beliefs about nature of human existence and society where he stated that he believes that men does not need to work hard as they do if and only if they are willing to simplify and also by following their instincts. He introduced the concept of voluntary poverty for himself where primary necessities were identified. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... QUESTION 3 The assertion that all works by weird fiction authors are simply ridiculous flights of fancy wholly detached from real world issues and problems is completely false. I could choose almost any example from our readings and pick out some sort of real world issue or important thing that I have learned from them. For the sake of time, however, I will focus on The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, The Summer People by Shirley Jackson and Smoke Ghost by Fritz Leiber. Each of these stories has succeeded in broadening my horizons and has taught me something important about the world in which we live. Weird fictionstories cover a wide range of important issues including sexism, the social structure of tourist towns and the disparity of the working class. In the introduction to the book Weird Fictionby S. T. Joshi, different aspects of the weird tale are examined. Joshi states that the weird tale...did not (and perhaps does not now) exist as a genre but as the consequence of a world view (1). This quote refers to the fact that weird literature stems from a desire to display a certain view of the world to readers, not just take them on a flight of detached fancy. Another point that Joshi makes about weird literature, is seen through a quote on the last page of his introduction, In every case we shall see that each writers entire output is a philosophical unity, changing as the author s conception of the world changes ... • 14. The Movie The Legend This movie is about Chris Kyle, who is a dedicated Navy SEAL sniper. He is referred to as The Legend because he is one of the greatest, deadliest snipers and has killed dozens of people. American Sniper really shows the effect war has on a person and how Post Traumatic Stress Disorder changed his life. Throughout his four tours in war, Chris was exposed to actual and threatened death. Which is one of the requirements to have PTSD. A lot of those situations where he experienced the actual or threatened death were people he cared about deeply, which definitely impacted him. Not only that, but he had killed dozens of people as well so he witnessed it all in person and had a direct experience. The four categories of symptoms for PTSD are intrusion, avoidance, negative cognitions/mood, and arousal/reactivity. He clearly displayed symptoms in each of these four categories especially when he would return home to his family. There was a scene where Chris was sitting in a chair staring at a TV that was not on but there were sounds of constant gun shots and a helicopter. He was having an auditory hallucination, which falls under the category of intrusion. Another symptom Chris presented was avoidance. When his wife, Taya, asked him what he wanted to do that day, he did not want to leave the house. This was probably because he was avoiding any situation which could remind him of the traumatic events he had experienced. Although, that was not the only thing he avoided. Each time ... • 21. Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven Essay An Analysis of Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven Death. A strong topic, frequently but solemnly discussed. However, when I read Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven , I was immediately captivated by the new angle brought to my attention regarding death. While the topic of death is usually associated with either sympathy or horror, Poe succeeded in portraying a feeling caught between the two; and at the same time bringing forth new feelings I would never thought to consider regarding death. These feelings reflect a sorrow so deep into a psychological madness, a feeling that the pain death brings has ruined one forever. After analyzing this poem I came to the conclusion that Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven demonstrates that the sorrow the death of a loved one brings will stay with you forever. Poe communicated this theme through abstract language , tone, and allusion. The opening lines of The Raven identify the speaker as someone who feels tired and weak but is still awake in the middle of a gloomy night. He passes the time by reading a strange book of ancient knowledge. The first line of the poem contains alliteration of w in while, weak, and weary to produce the effect of unsteadiness. This line also sets the poem s rhythmical pattern and provides the first example of the use of internal rhyme in dreary and weary. The speaker tells of becoming more tired and beginning to doze but being wakened by a sound that he assumes is a quiet knock. Internal rhymes of napping, tapping, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Artists from the US are now able to tour internationally, and are well received across the world. This paper analyzes the effects of this commercialization in Latin America, specifically in the context of hip hop. There are many criterion that determine whether a text falls under the category of naturalism. Ernest Hemingway s mastery of the naturalistic style is evident in his many works as he expertly applies the many different elements. It is clear that his work falls under the naturalist genre through looking specifically at his short story The Big Two Hearted River . Objectivism is a technique used where the author excludes most, if not all, of the character s past and identity so that the character becomes a simple observer. In The Big Two Hearted River , the reader knows very little about the character Nick in order to focus more on the plot and what happens to the character, rather than the character themselves (Zhang 2.2). The objectivism of Nick in the story goes a step further. Hemingway s focus on the characters actions demonstrates how Nick s technique allows him to move beyond the deterministic world to create his own purpose. Hemingway only includes information about Nick to help the reader understand what he is trying to achieve. Nick took him by the head and held him while he threaded the slim hook under his chin, down through his thorax and into the last segments of his abdomen. The grasshopper took hold of the hook with his front feet, spitting tobacco juice on it. Nick dropped him into the water (Hemingway 191). Much of the story is a series of descriptions of Nicks actions much like the example given above. There is not much focus on the characters thoughts or feelings. Nick s actions are the most important part of the story because they align themselves with his purpose; to systematically and ceremonially kill, out of necessity rather than for no reason. Nick reconnects with nature throughout the text, but instead of nature having control over the consequences of his actions, he is the one who controls the outcome. This goes against the traditional naturalistic style where characters hopelessly battle against nature and no matter what they do cannot achieve their goal because nature is stronger and determines the outcome of their actions. Nick s appearance, age or health have very little to do with the Hemingway s idea of how to become more masculine , for him men must first use proper technique in order to create meaning ... The speech was created primarily Charles Bohlen, a Soviet expert and Marshall s special assistant, and later revised by Marshall. As economies were not improving at a rapid enough pace, combined with high unemployment and a hungry population, people started to look for change. How do the paintings reflect the attitude of the artists? How do the paintings reflect the philosophy and value of the world? No matter you are eastern or western people, paintings are just not about the skills, but they also convey the feelings of the artists. Most of the artists would like to express their personal feelings like happiness, sadness rather than national feelings by using objects.(Seitz,1983) By contrast, Color field painting was the development of Abstract expressionism and the purpose was similar in addition to the fact that background was tremendously crucial. (Wilkin,2007) The only difference is that the subject matter in color field painting is the color, the object is not necssarily important.(Artstory foundation) Willem De Kooning represented the Abstract expressionism while Kenneth Noland represented the color field painting.Willem De Kooning was the prominent Abstract expressionism painters and urgely objected to the restrictions imposed by naming movements. He said I m not interested in abstracting or taking things out or reducing painting to design, form, line, and color. Years after personally experiencing the horrors of the Holocaust and World War II, Elie Wiesel shared his story with America among the President and First lady, Hillary Clinton, to inspire the world to act upon social and political injustices. In his speech The Perils of Indifference , Wiesel opened up about his past and how it made him realize how important it is to stand up against crimes against humanity. He also discussed the state of the American people and compared their involvement in foreign intervention back to the lack of intervention in World War II. Wiesel motivated America with his emphasis on the emotional, logical, and ethical impacts of indifference. Perhaps the most influential piece of Wiesel s speech was his inclusion of unique personal narrative. His touching story of his youth spent in a concentration camp gave weight to his points on indifference as he recalled that Fifty four years ago to the day, a young Jewish boy from a small town in the Carpathian Mountains woke up...in a place of eternal infamy called Buchenwald (Wiesel). With no property to their name and no individual rights, they marched to Buchenwald where his father later died before they could both escape ( Wiesel, Elie ). The theory describes that the effort will determine the performance and the performance will help indicate the overall outcome. Expectancy represents the belief that exerting a high level of effort will result in the successful performance of some task, (Dr. Creasy PowerPoint). There are some advantages of the expectancy theory. One advantage is that it emphasizes on rewards or pay offs, (Expectancy Theory of Motivation, n.d., para. 5). In Remember the Titans, Coach Herman Boone, portrayed by Denzel Washington, expects big things out of his high school football team. As the newly appointed head coach and a black man, Coach Boone was faced with big expectations or else he would have to face the consequences. Coach Boone established that his team would show tremendous effort in the fall football camp at Gettysburg College. He set ground rules as he told all of his players that they would leave the school by 7:29 AM and made them all wear dress shirts, ties, and a jacket. Most importantly, customer service levels must be met, and this often determines the mode of transport used. The options for consideration include: rail, road, water (sea and river) or air transport. • 37. Ethical Issues In Huck Finn Throughout its history, Huck Finn has faced many controversies. It was shunned by many news outlets at the time of its writing for its subject matter, being called trash by many publications. It was even banned from some libraries for this reason. However, despite its flaws, Huck Finn proves to be an entertaining novel that offers an interesting look into pre Civil war America, and should be freely avaliable for all to read. Despite its inherent value as an examination of its time, many people had a problem with the manner in which it was portrayed. One of these apparent issues was noted by a censor of the Concord public library, who called into question the use of the dialect and grammatical style of the book. To quote the New York Herald, who were reporting on the situation, Another committeeman perused the volume with great care and discovered that it was couched in the language of a rough, ignorant dialect and that all through its pages there is a systematic use of bad grammar and an employment of inelegant expressions. These mannerisms, combined with other offenses, led to the book garnering a trashy reputation in the eyes of the censors, who quickly banned it from their library. however, to view these mannerisms as trashy and nothing more would be to misunderstand a large portion of the novel s appeal. This novel is a period piece, set in the south before the onset of the Civil War. In order to fully immerse the reader into this setting, Twain made sure to include all of the different dialects that a person in that setting might hear. As the Athenaeum deftly explains, (The characters are) schooled in half a dozen extraordinary dialects the Pike County dialect in all its forms, the dialect of the Missouri negro, and the extremest form of the backwoods South Western dialect, to wit. This makes the story and characters more entertaining, as it allows the reader to truly immerse themselves into the narrative. The First and Second Great Awakenings had a transformation in their methods of worship with a change in venue, with the First Great Awakening having people preach to the masses on the street corners outside; while in the Second Great Awakening, having revivals and camp meetings with people screaming and jumping, a change from the traditional, to a wholly new method of worship. This division amongst revolutionaries was further heightened by the continued existence of social and economic problems throughout Europe. Repercussions In Education The United States is no longer the leader in education standards and in fact is no longer even making the top ten when it comes to reading, math, and science literacy rankings among the world for education (Learning Curve, 8). The repercussions are that college graduates are not as competitive globally as they once were and obtaining desired careers are more competitive than ever, having an ultimate result of slowing down the economy. Due to these conditions, education reform needs to be dealt with immediately as it will take years of implementation before any positive results are actually achieved. Despite the introduction of common core, and no child left behind, the schoolsystem is still failing students who are unqualified to even enter... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Parents that have spoken out risk upsetting a teacher that will be looking after their child for the rest of the year, many teachers express the opinion that parents are not qualified to help their children as they have not had pedagogy training. Parents need to be allowed to voice opinions and concerns when it comes to their children s well being without fear of repercussions. There are numerous ways that parents should become involved in education reform. In New York City, parents withheld their children from participating in standardized testing; proclaiming that too much time was spent on training for the tests and not enough time and faith was given to the teachers to teach according to their best judgement and training. Instead of waiting on politicians to lead the change in education reform parents need to start change themselves on a local level by participating heavily in the schools that their children attend. Getting to know the teachers and administration allows parents to have a voice about concerns and problems that they witness firsthand as well as being active voters for members of the school board. Those that complain that the nation is no longer a competitive learning source should in turn become actively involved in education ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. Complementary And Alternative Therapies Discuss the various methods of complementary and alternative therapies. CAMS are divided into five different categories: biological, manipulative body, mind body, energy, and alternative medicine. For example, dance therapy would fall under the manipulative body based interventions, while mind body interventions encompass alternatives like poetry, art, or music, and yoga would be an example of mind body interventions and manipulative body. Participants in music therapy have reported improved quality of life, and yoga therapy has been shown to lead individuals towards motivation to health improvement. As well, dance therapy has been proven to improve body image, coordination, body awareness, depression, anxiety, and stress relief; as well, sexual abuse survivors have used dance therapy to reconnect with their body by coping and processing, as well as give them a sense of freedom from their trauma (Complementary and Integrative, n.d.). ... • 51. Dead Zone in the Gulf of Mexico Essay One World Essay: Dead Zone in the Gulf of Mexico Scientific Reasoning: The dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico is a human problem, like most other disasters. What this means is that once the place thrived and was ecologically balanced, but we tipped the balance slightly and wrecked havoc upon the environment. It has been noted to occur since the 1950 s and is ongoing. The reason that this dead zone occurs is because of a phenomenon known as eutrophication. Eutrophication is when there is an excessive amount of nutrients in a body of water and it causes an abundance of plants to grow. In this case the nearby farms had been using nitrogen in their fertilizers. The nitrogen got carried into the ocean through rain and other forms of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some species might thrive in conditions that other struggle to survive. For example some predators might need more oxygen then a smaller prey. With less predators being around, there is a huge burst in prey, which can eat up all of the bacteria. When the bacteria all die, the prey can t find any food and all die out. This causes a very unreliable food chain and can be dangerous to live in. In hypoxic zones what tends to happen is that marine life such as fish or shrimp die out quickly while the smaller organisms live. This causes whole species to die out leaving a dominance of gelatinous creatures such as jellyfish to thrive in. Economic Problems: There are many economical problems due to the dead zone ranging from fisheries going out of business to illnesses. The economical problems have paid their toll on nearby fishers whom in total have paid over 10 billion US dollars to repair the problem. Sadly though, no matter how much they pay, the problem is still on going. The gulf s massive fishing industry is trying to focus its efforts on the parts that have been affected in an attempt to save their sea. According to many sources, EPA views this problem as unimportant and hasn t helped yet. The reason that it is so hard to come to an agreement is because there is no solution that pleases everyone. Right now the farmers up north of the gulf are having an easy time because of easy and cheap waste disposal while downstream the fishers are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 52. Constantly Brooding Economist Summary Steven E. Rhoads wrote an article concerning why the brooding economist is constantly quarreling with congressmen, social workers, engineers, in general all those who seek more money to do good. Economists were alarmed about recreation center costs, because they cared about the victims of heart attacks and slow learning children. Steven says that whenever the costs and benefits of one program increase, the expenditures on and benefits from some other program decrease. Steven believes that Economists keep reminding and lecturing us that there is no such thing as a free lunch, whereas the concept of opportunity costs most people do understand it, and even people who don t, the concept is a normal aspect of life,Therefore, it is common sense ...
